Dominican Sisters Select Vince Krydynski ’81 as New President On July 1, Marian Catholic entered a new and exciting time in its rich history with the appointment of the first lay president. After a long and thorough search, the Dominican Sisters of Springfield selected Vince Krydynski ’81 for the position. “Vince is truly right for us right now. He is the person that that can bring the continuity of the mission of Sister leadership to lay leadership,” said Sister Rebecca Ann Gemma, OP, prioress general of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. The search for the next president began last year with members of the Marian Catholic community interviewing many candidates until the final few were chosen to interview with the Dominican Sister Member Board. The ultimate decision was made by the Dominican Sisters, fully aware that a layperson, or a partner in mission, would eventually hold the position. “Knowing that we needed and trusted our partners in mission, we began a while back bringing forth and asking for the assistance of those who will continue the Dominican tradition and preaching the gospel,” commented Sister Rebecca Ann. New President CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Vince Krydynski graduated from Marian Catholic in 1981, and appreciates the impact the school has had on his personal life. Vince and his wife, Loretta, sent their daughter Hannah, a 2010 graduate, to Marian Catholic. He continued to be an active member of the Marian community, serving on the alumni board, the advisory board, and the board of directors. In 2014, Vince joined the Marian Catholic team as the Vice President for Advancement. “Marian Catholic impacted who I am, and I believe in the mission of the school,” said Krydynski. Vince is excited about the future of Marian Catholic, “I am guided by our mission statement and will focus on always making sure we are following the tradition of those before us, those who serve Marian now, and focusing on the future.” Committed to maintaining the Dominican identity of the school, both Krydynski and Principal Steve Tortorello ’04 will be taking classes to become Dominican Associates. Through the training, they will strengthen their faith and ensure

“I AM EXCITED TO SERVE THE SCHOOL AND CONTINUE THE LEGACY STARTED BY THE DOMINICAN SISTERS, THE FACULTY, AND ALL WHO SERVE NOW.”

Dominican values remain a prominent part of the Marian Catholic experience. Vince realizes the importance of this facet of Marian’s identity, “The Sisters have passed the torch, and it is now the laity’s job to keep it burning brightly.” Marian Catholic is a spirit, and Krydynski wants to keep the community open and thriving. “I look forward to open communication with all those in the

Marian community, and invite friends and alumni to set up an appointment to visit the school, or participate in our numerous events.” While the Dominican Sisters still guide the school and its mission, Krydynski is ready to assume the responsibilities of the president’s position. “I am excited to serve the school and continue the legacy started by the Dominican Sisters, the faculty, and all who serve now.”

New Vice President for Advancement Eager to Share Passion for Catholic Education This summer Marian Catholic welcomed Dan Kozlowski as its new Vice President for Advancement. Dan, a Northwest Indiana native, is excited to be joining the Marian Catholic community. “I believe in Catholic education, and I’m proud to be supporting that mission by serving Marian Catholic. The work that we do benefits students greatly, and I am excited to see the direct impact,” says Kozlowski of his new role. Familiar with private education, Dan spent 14 of his 20 years of schooling in private institutions. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting,

“ I BELIEVE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION, AND I’M PROUD TO BE SUPPORTING THAT MISSION BY SERVING MARIAN CATHOLIC.”

and then earned an MBA from Valparaiso in 2015. Dan worked for four years in the public accounting field, before transitioning to education when he became the Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving at Valparaiso University. When asked about his decision to move to academia, Dan replied, “I really enjoy working in education because you get to see the difference you are making firsthand.” Dan was drawn to Marian Catholic, saying, “I see Marian Catholic as a strong institution with inspiring traditions and I wanted to help promote the school’s mission.” He looks forward to spreading the word about the value of a Marian Catholic education, and seeing the benefits in the successes of the students, alumni, and friends. Dan is passionate about the values Marian Catholic High School represents and looks forward to continuing its legacy of success.

TYLER ULIS ’14 TAKES LEADERSHIP, TALENT, HEART, AND GRIT TO THE NBA

Speaking to the media prior to the start of the 2015-16 season Calipari referred to Ulis as possibly the best floor general he’s ever coached, ‘because he just moves people.’ “It’s like having a quarterback who’s not getting signals from the sidelines.” High praise indeed considering Derrick Rose, John Wall, Tyreke Evans and Brandon Knight graced the Kentucky locker room before Tyler. Tyler’s high basketball IQ, highly advanced ball-handling, footwork, and passing and scoring ability combined with his unteachable leadership, feel for the game, and heart of a lion, all made his dream of playing in the NBA come true. Ulis was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the second round at pick number 34. During the 2016 Las Vegas Summer League, Ulis averaged 14.5 points and had 38 assists and just 11 turnovers in the six games. He also made the shot of the Summer League, nailing a buzzerbeating three-pointer to send Phoenix into the semifinals. Ulis is proving to be the steal of the draft and the playmaker the Suns have been seeking for a long time. Throughout his journey, it’s been Proverbs 3: 5-6 that has shaped Tyler’s identity. Quite literally too, as it appears as a large left arm tattoo he acquired the night before leaving home for his freshman year at Kentucky in June 2014:

Tyler Ulis ’14, who is generously listed at 5'10", entered the 2016 NBA Draft with an equal amount of questions and exclamation marks. But the headlines and concerns came as old news for Ulis, who has been surprising people on the basketball court way before his days as a Marian Catholic High School Spartan. The two-time Illinois All-State selection, Southtown Star Player of the Year and Marian Catholic all-time leading scorer (2,335), leader in assists (578) and steals leader (283), quickly turned heads during his freshman season under Coach John Calipari and the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Ulis appeared in 37 games in his first season, finishing second on the team in total assists and first in assists per game along with having the highest 3-point percentage at .429. An undisputed leader, Ulis one-upped his All-SEC Freshman Team honors during his sophomore season. He was a consensus first-team All-American, the 21st Wildcat in school history to earn the distinction, and the first Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year winner in school history. In addition to All-SEC First Team honors and SEC All-Defensive Team honors, Ulis became just the second player in league history (Anthony Davis being the other) to win SEC Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. During his career at Kentucky, Ulis set the tone early, proving that whatever he lacked in height he made up for in leadership, talent, heart, and grit.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.” It’s his reminder to stay patient, on and off the court. The message has served him well and will no doubt continue to guide him through the NBA chapters of his life.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2016! On May 23, the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Tinley Park was filled with smiles and joy as the Marian Catholic community came together to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2016 on a very special Monday night. The music of the band set a celebratory tone as the room hummed with excitement and anticipation. Led by valedictorian Madeleine Kelly and salutatorian Julie Javorka, this year’s graduates continued the tradition of Marian Catholic excellence, earning almost $20 million in college scholarships. The night was full of words of wisdom and praise from both faculty and peers that touched students, families, and friends. After numerous handshakes and expressions of congratulations, 280 students began a new chapter of their lives armed with Marian Catholic diplomas, a reflection of their many accomplishments over the past four years. The class of 2016 will be moving on to new adventures with the extensive knowledge and skills they acquired at Marian Catholic. Good luck to all of our graduates on their future endeavors! We hope you’ll keep in contact with the alumni office to share the news of your successes! Email updates to goodnews@marianchs.com.

Sharing Simple Gifts

IN APPALACHIA Led by Sr. Dorothy Marie Solak, OP and Justin Thirstrup ’08 of Marian Catholic’s Campus Ministry, nine students began their summer vacation with a mission trip to Harlan County Kentucky. Accompanied by a group of young alumni and alumni parents, the students traveled to one of the most impoverished areas in the country to bring a glimmer of hope to its residents. The Marian Catholic team worked with Christian Outreach with Appalachian People (COAP, Inc.) to help provide safe and affordable housing to the citizens of Harlan through two different roofing projects. One project involved students finishing a porch that had been added onto a home, providing the grateful resident with “a place to sit and admire God in the beauty of the nature around her.” Why Harlan Kentucky when there is much to be done in the Chicagoland area? The Marian Catholic community reaches out to assist local neighborhoods in various ways throughout the school year. As members of a global society, however, Marian students are encouraged to understand the needs that exist throughout

the world. Traveling to Appalachia gives them that opportunity. Along the way, the students realize that the people they meet have much to offer in return. Their simple gifts of warmth and generosity are often overwhelming. Someone who seems “different” at first is quickly recognized as a human being worthy of dignity and respect. For Justin Thirstrup, Marian Catholic’s Director of Campus Ministry, being able to connect with the people of Harlan County is easily one of the most important parts of the trip. “Life moves at a much slower pace in Harlan County. You can’t help but stop and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation around you. And the trip isn’t all work! We had a Memorial Day picnic and visited the beautiful Martins Fork Lake. We lived in community, so everyone took turns cleaning and cooking delicious meals. As is tradition for this trip, we rescued a few puppies that were without homes. We ended the week at the annual Poke Sallet Festival. One of my favorite memories from this year’s trip happened at the Poke Fest. Our student really

connected with one of our representatives from COAP. He was a featured performer at the Fest this night, so our students stood in front and made signs to cheer him on as he sang. It was great to see the relationships that were formed!” As might be expected, students explore their personal relationships with God during the week as well. Each night ends with prayer and a special meditation. The entire experience is a wonderful opportunity for Marian Catholic students and chaperones to live out the Four Pillars of Dominican life – Prayer, Study, Preaching and Community.

Marian Catholic 2016 class president Kyle Walker won’t have many financial worries as he enters his first year of college at Stanford University this fall. That’s because Walker is a recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship, which offers a good-through-graduation financial support to 1,000 high school graduates across the country. This year’s Gates scholars were selected from a pool of 53,000 applicants who were evaluated on a number of criteria including Kyle Walker and family celebrate his achievements. academic achievement, community service and leadership potential. “When I heard I got the scholarship I was relieved,” said Walker, 18, of Chicago Heights who plans to major in engineering at Stanford. As class president and near the top of his class with a 4.5 GPA, it is safe to say Kyle had a full schedule. Marian Catholic Principal Steve Tortorello ’04 said, “Kyle is full of energy and extremely intelligent. He is truly a role model for all and a great representative for Marian Catholic.” Kyle follows the same path of recent Marian Catholic graduates, Sofia Salgado ’14 and Janie Neal ’15 who also received the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Awarded to high achieving minorities with low incomes, the scholarship pays tuition, fees, books and living expenses for each academic year. Walker’s words of wisdom for high achievement? “Find something you’re passionate about, set goals in life and don’t be afraid.” With his sights fixed on a new set of goals at Stanford, Kyle is clearly destined for success.

TRACK & FIELD

Spring ATHLETICS Great organizations typically achieve success with a “team first” philosophy. Although that’s the attitude embraced at Marian Catholic, the Spring of 2016 proved to be an exceptional season with the Spartans achieving team success behind some recordsetting individual achievers.

LACROSSE Women’s Lacrosse posted the third winningest season in school history (12-9), as junior Kaitlyn Baranski moved to the head-of-the-class in five all-time Spartan statistical categories.

title, spearheaded by the efforts of SouthtownStar Player of the Year Susie Baranski ’16, who is now the all-time leader for the Spartans in nine offensive statistical categories. Susie is taking her talents to Southern Illinois University next year, well prepared to make an immediate contribution to the Salukis. “I have never seen anything like her in my 16 years coaching or in all of my years playing,” Softball Coach Kerri Evans ’96 said of Susie Baranski. “I never got used to or stopped being amazed at her because she just continued to impress daily. She actually forced a girl out at the plate with the bases loaded on a hit to center. The diving plays she makes and her throws to the plate are unbelievable.”

BASEBALL Marian Baseball turned in the second winningest campaign (tied) in school history (25-11) behind ESCC Player of the Year junior Mark DiLuia and ESCC Pitcher of the Year senior Matt Mulhearn. The Spartans used a pair of shutouts over Joliet Catholic to notch a second-place finish in the ESCC and advance to the IHSA Regional finals with a dramatic walk-off homer from DiLuia in a win over Homewood-Flossmoor.

SOFTBALL Marian Softball achieved its 24th 20-victory season (23-12) and won an IHSA Regional

Marian was at no loss for success in individual sports as well, particularly a women’s track squad that finished third in the East Suburban Catholic meet. Highlighted by a 10th-place finish in the IHSA State 800-meter run by junior Kelly Mindak, the Spartans qualified for state in five entries. Mindak also qualified in the 1,600 (21st place overall) as an encore to her state-qualifying effort last fall in cross country. Additionally, the Spartans made the state grade behind sophomore Jada Hoffmann (15th in 100 dash), junior Mee’Shaunda Roddy (16th in 200 dash) and junior Ashley Donald (23rd in long jump). “The women put their heart into the season, which was tough going against schools with more experience and full teams,” longtime Women’s Track Coach LaVon Burks praised. “I look forward to the women showing more improvement and more events making it to the state meet next year. We are always looking for fresh talent with the new class of 2020 seeming very promising.” Men’s track was also represented at the IHSA state meet with senior Joshua Hines earning a 17th place in the 300-meter hurdles, while men’s tennis saw sophomore Donald Flynn capture a state-qualifying berth for a second straight year.

Catching up with COACH MATTIO Marian Catholic athletic legends Don Berg and Mike Goldrick are now in great company. On June 11, the school and numerous former Spartans honored Dave Mattio ’66 with a placard that will be placed on the West Gym wall next to those of Berg and Goldrick. An idea that originated with Mattio, the West Gym honors longtime contributors and “legends” of Marian Catholic’s Athletic Department. Berg and Goldrick were the first recipients of the recognition at a ceremony in January. Also announced on June 11, a Dave Mattio Family Scholarship has been established for deserving students in admiration and appreciation for Mattio’s 37 years as head football coach and more than 40 years as athletic director. Mattio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early April, but has continued to serve as athletic director, maintaining a presence at Marian Catholic that began with his days as a student in 1962. The June 11 evening, Catching Up with Coach Mattio, was spearheaded by former Marian football standouts Tom West ’75, Michael Bruni ’86, and Tim Swanson ’86. Nearly 500 friends and families turned out to honor one of the true faces of Marian Catholic, including football alumni and former coaches from several different eras.

Among the former Spartans was quarterback Mark Talamonti ’74, one of the nation’s prominent cancer doctors, who has been actively involved in Dave Mattio’s treatment plan. With tremendous support from wife Jody and family, Mattio has approached the disease with the same vigor displayed in his 251 career victories as head football coach. Mattio’s place among Marian Catholic’s “legends” is a slam dunk (much like Berg and Goldrick, who were in attendance June 11). During his tenure as coach, Mattio sent four Marian players to the National Football League and advanced hundreds more to the collegiate level. His teams made 20 IHSA playoff appearances,

11

including the 1993 IHSA Class 4A state championship. Not surprisingly, he is a member of multiple Halls of Fame. Founded by a group of his former football players, the Mattio Family Scholarship has already generated spirited support due to Coach Mattio’s impact on generations of Marian Catholic students. His influence will continue with the plan to provide financial assistance to a deserving student each year. More information regarding the Mattio Family Scholarship may be obtained by contacting Mike Mesterharm ’05, Director of Development at (708) 996-4622.

The Sister Judine Hilbing, OP

SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP Marian Catholic is pleased to announce the founding of the Sister Judine Hilbing, OP Service Scholarship. The endowed scholarship was established through numerous generous gifts given in gratitude for Sister Judine’s dedication to Marian Catholic High School during her term as President. As a lifelong educator within the Catholic education system, Sister Judine viewed service as a major component toward building community within the school environment. The scholarship will be awarded to an industrious student who demonstrates an appreciation for the opportunity to be educated within the Dominican tradition. Preference will be given to a student whose family assists with campus beautification.

The Sister Judine Hilbing, OP Scholarship shall be awarded to a student who: • Is committed to Gospel values • Maintains a 3.0 GPA • Maintains a good discipline record • Offers service to the school community, especially in the area of campus beautification • Demonstrates some level of tuition assistance eligibility • Once established in a career, will support the scholarship program in the Spartan tradition For more information or to make a donation, contact Mike Mesterharm ’05, Director of Development at (708) 996-4622.

A FOND FAREWELL The end of another joyful, rewarding year at Marian Catholic brought with it the departure of several treasured members of the school community. Sister Judine Hilbing OP, retired from her position as president as Marian Catholic High School transitions to lay leadership under new president Vince Krydynski ’81. Mary Ann Golden leaves behind her English classroom and Maureen Huizenga the math department, as the two retire and set their sights on a new path in life’s journey. Marian Catholic will certainly miss Sister Dorothy Marie, who faithfully served Marian Catholic as Director of Recruitment, Service Club Coordinator and Fencing Coach. We also send our heartfelt prayers and good wishes to Marian staff members who have moved on to new opportunities: Timothy Ashe, Melissa Liang, Cecelia Dygdon, Lisa Garrett, Tona Haywood, and Jerry Verde ’95. All of those leaving the halls of Marian Catholic will always be remembered by the contributions they made to the community. Thank you for your ministry!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Metro Chicago Alumni

CELEBRATES 10TH ANNUAL GATHERING A great turnout and shared experiences made for a memorable evening as alumni and friends came together for the 10th annual Metro Chicago Gathering at the famed Union League Club in Chicago on June 2nd. Those in attendance enjoyed an evening

Pete Kroner ’05, Johnny Cifelli ’08, and Jesse Tyler ’05

filled with networking, socializing, and the spirit of Marian Catholic. Guests were treated to food and drinks, along with the introduction of new Marian Catholic President, Vince Krydynski ’81. The Metro Chicago Gathering provided Mr. Krydynski with the perfect opportunity to speak to friends and alumni, as well as reunite with his own classmates. Given the number of Marian Catholic High School graduates who live and work in the area, the Metro Chicago Gathering is the perfect venue for everyone to reconnect. We hope you and your friends will join us for this special celebration of Marian Catholic in the future.

Jim Schreiber ’81, Vince Krydynski ’81, Sister Judine Hilbring, OP, and Ed Kmetz ’81 enjoy a night in Chicago

CAREER DAY

Gives Students a Glimpse of the Future Hosted by the Alumni Office, Marian Catholic’s annual Career Day enables Marian Catholic High School students to learn more about a variety of professions from those who live and work in them every day. This year, on May 2, nearly 75 alumni and guests were gracious enough to give their time to educate students about their chosen vocations. Students had the opportunity to select three careers they would most like to explore. Guest speakers included architects, engineers, marine biologist, and pilots along with other inspiring career specialists. “To hear all of the information from the numerous professions was extremely intriguing,” said Angelo Cantelo ’19. Career Day was a great opportunity not only for the students to learn about several fields of work, but for them to also meet many accomplished alumni and friends.

A select group of Marian Catholic Alumni and friends shared their professional expertise with students.
