Campaign Exceeds Preliminary $5.25 Million Goal! Story on page 2

Marian Catholic High School’s president since 1992, Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. will take on a new position as Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago beginning on July 1. McCaughey accepted the position at the urging of Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, and with the blessing of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. “After an extensive search, we believe that our Search Committee identified the best possible person for this important position in the Archdiocese of Chicago,” noted Cardinal George. “Sr. Mary Paul has both the professional experience and leadership qualities that are necessary to take responsibility for Sr. M. Paul meets Chicago Archdiocesan students the future of our Catholic elementary and high at press conference. schools.” Although the 1967 graduate of Marian Catholic certainly has no intention of leaving the Marian “family,” she certainly vacates the building having left several indelible marks under her leadership. Through Partnership 2000 and The Courage to Lead Capital Campaigns, McCaughey has been one of the guiding forces in the building of a new fine arts wing, a primary competition gymnasium and newly built Leadership Center/Student Union. Tremendous progress has also been witnessed with additions of a new college room, greenhouse, Campus Ministry area, two science labs and the Dominican Way classroom addition. Under her leadership, Marian earned its second U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon in 1995-96 and Marian has twice been named to the Catholic High School Honor Roll (2004, 2006), which recognizes the Top 50 secondary schools in America. “The whole thing began because a wonderful local pastor asked me last November to go and talk to a search committee,” said McCaughey, who has degrees from Quincy, St. Louis, Notre Dame and Continued on page 2

Campaign Extended Goal…$6 Million in Sight!

UPDATE

Leadership Agrees to Keep Engaging MCHS Community Until Closing Date: September 6, 2008 In December 2007, the TC2L Team ran the stats—and it was a very Merry Christmas. With the official closing date of The Courage to Lead Capital Campaign over nine months away, the preliminary goal of $5,250,000 was met, and exceeded. The Team took (literally) ten seconds to celebrate and then proceeded to work on the mandate of the Steering Committee: “Keep going.” “Reaching the preliminary campaign goal is the result of the amazing generosity of our investors, be they a lead donor or a young alum—and, in justice to them, we will continue to invite TC2L investments. The engagement of all our community is important, not only for the practical and spiritual involvement of each member of the Marian Catholic community, but because the preliminary goal never fully funded our projects,” noted Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, President. The Steering Committee’s decision was affirmed in January 2008 by the MCHS Advisory and Corporate Boards as well as by the Founding Council for the MCHS Leadership Program (still in pilot). $6,000,000 was established as the new benchmark for the very successful TC2L operating team (Mary Moffatt, Campaign Consultant and Major Gifts Partner, Peg Massucci, TC2L Campaign Manager, and Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Director of Development), supported by the entire MCHS Advancement Team who will continue to work with Campaign Leadership. The official closing of TC2L on Saturday, September 6, 2008, is set to coincide with the opening celebration for Marian Catholic's 50th Anniversary Year. Marian President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey... Continued from front page graduate work at DePaul and the Chicago Theological Seminary. “Talk I did, expressing my feelings about education in the Archdiocese, stressing that, while I was grateful for this opportunity to ‘speak my piece,’ I may not be the one they wanted for their job – and I already had a job ‘I loved’. “Marian’s continued strength is also a factor. We will not miss a beat in ‘teaching scholars with a soul.’ While this move still leaves me a bit in shock, I am humbled by it and aware of the challenges and the tremendous possibilities,” McCaughey said. The Dominican Sisters of Springfield, who have sponsored Marian since it opened in 1958, have set a priority to seek a highly qualified replacement among the Dominican Sisters. “It is an honor for the whole congregation that Sr. M. Paul’s gifts and organizational skills are being recognized by the Archdiocese of Chicago,” Dominican Sisters of Springfield Prioress General Sr. Rose Marie Riley ’67, O.P. said. “Her vision and foresight will bring the educational community together for the good of the children and the Church.” McCaughey, who tentatively plans to complete her duties at Marian on June 12, plans to leave Marian with the excellence she has been so instrumental in achieving and will focus on completing The Courage to Lead Campaign with the help of the Advisory Board, TC2L Campaign Leadership, and the MCHS community, with the construction being led by Maintenance Supervisor Harvey Mazur. “There are no formal farewells planned at this time as my love for this place, the constraints on my time, and the need to keep a focus on both roles does not allow for any long goodbyes. I will be always,

however, just around the corner to join the Marian constituency for pieces of our 50th Anniversary Celebration next year.” McCaughey will leave Marian in extremely able hands led by Principal Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait and Chief Financial Officer Bill Hogan. Meanwhile, Mary Moffatt, currently serving as a consultant, has accepted the role of Vice-President of Institutional Advancement. Sr. Kathleen Anne will serve as spokesperson for the school should there be an interim time prior to the appointment of a President. “The position of principal truly ministers to the very heart of the school – to its students, its staff, its teachers, and its parents,” McCaughey said. “The complex and awesome work of education that is only achieved in the classroom, activities, and guidance is the provenance of the principal. We are blessed to have someone with the competencies, confidence, and care who is willing to cement the ‘center’ of Marian Catholic High School. Without Sr. Kathleen’s effective leadership, any change could not even be contemplated. “Bill’s accounts are handled with tremendous integrity. His eye on our financial health and honest cautions have helped us to more clearly define our priorities and reach our goals. Mary’s passion for the mission and loyalty to the Dominican Sisters is matched only by her gracious warmth and ability to marshal the resources needed with honesty and energy.”

“Her vision and foresight will bring the educational community together for the good of the children and – Sr. Rose Marie Riley ’67, O.P. the Church.” Prioress General

MARIAN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY In September of the 1958-59 school year, 205 freshmen (to become the Class of 1962 and the first MCHS graduating class) arrived to find ten Dominican Sisters and four lay persons ready for them. Fifty years later, the 2008-2009 school year will find hundreds of teachers and over 12,000 Marian Catholic High School graduates celebrating faith, academics, service, and achievement at the corner of Joe Orr and Ashland in a facility nearly four times the size of the original. The celebration of Marian Catholic’s 50th Year is intended to be inclusive – alumni, alumni parents, teachers, “alumni teachers,” current students and parents, and the community are all invited to play a part in the year’s festivities which take place both on and off campus. Committees are actively being formed and your participation is warmly invited as the calendar takes shape. To open the 50th Anniversary Year, Francis Cardinal George will celebrate Eucharist at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, at Marian Catholic High School. All are invited, but a special welcome will be extended to former teachers (including the Dominican Sisters) and Mass will be offered in memory of deceased Marian Catholic parents and alumni and all whose vision sparked Marian Catholic. The official closing of The Courage To Lead Campaign will also find a place in this Liturgy. Shortly before the September 6 Mass, a free “family day” will fill the grounds with fun for children and families. After Mass, an adult reception and music (bands from various eras) will follow outside and in the Leadership Center; local vendors will have food available. Studentguided tours will be conducted through the building and historical memorabilia will receive both visual and “virtual” treatment with the help of student creativity. Making this day accessible to all in the Marian community will be a priority: Marian Catholic’s roots are in its families and in the early support of local parishes. Homecoming, reunions, decade of champions round out the Fall events and special touches. In keeping with the Long-Range Plan, Marian Catholic’s Advancement Staff will continue its outreach to metro-Chicago and across the country during the 50th, traveling to meet with alums on both coasts (and points in-between!), even as alums come “home” through reunion and anniversary events. The alumni travel group will take a new twist too – not a trip to Italy, Ireland, or Napa, but to a “down-home” location: Springfield, Illinois. The “Springfield for Adults” weekend trip will run late winter/early Spring of 2009 and feature the Lincoln Library, a special historical evening downtown, Mass and visiting with Dominican Sisters at their Motherhouse. In returning in an easy way to the Dominican roots, groups of friends are especially encouraged to travel together. A complete itinerary is being planned for later publication. While all events usually held during the year will possess a “50th Celebration Flavor”, no event will have more of a “make-over” than a Spring Gala which will also incorporate the Hall of Fame during the anniversary year. This formal event will be held on April 25, 2009 at The Ballroom of The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and will honor the “Pillars” of Marian Catholic. In the spirit of the Four Pillars of Dominican Life (Prayer, Study, Community, Preaching/Service), the evening will celebrate Marian’s foundation in its people. This Gala will serve as the official close of the celebration.

Watch for a special 50th “pull out” calendar section in the next Marian Matters.

Gleason enters her fourth year on staff at MSU this spring and has also had coaching stints at Massachusetts (four NCAA appearances) and Purdue. Gleason earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management and communications from the University of Michigan in 1996. She was a member of the 1993, 1995 and 1996 Big Ten Regular Season Championship teams, the 1995 and 1996 Big Ten Tournament Championship teams, and played in the 1995 and 1996 Women’s College World Series while serving as co-captain of the 1996 team. The Country Club Hills native currently serves as the Second Vice President for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) after serving two terms as the Assistant Coach Representative for the Association.

INVOLVED WLOS JOURNALIST OF THE FUTURE Joe Wlos may only be a freshman at Marian Catholic, but he has already experienced the kind of journalistic success that few adults in this field know. After winning an essay contest in the seventh grade, Wlos was invited to report for the Scholastic Kids Press Corps. This group of young students is responsible for articles that appear in Scholastic news publications which have become popular teaching tools in classrooms throughout the nation. “I would love to be a journalist,” said Wlos who hopes to continue his education in the communications field. “Journalism is a way of helping people.” With a resume that includes interviews with various Chicago Bulls players, Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, and Jim Phillips, curator of the Field Museum’s King Tut exhibit, Wlos is not afraid to ask questions. With a professional attitude, he notes that interviewing has become “second nature” and is eager to face the new challenges and opportunities that this year will bring. As a political enthusiast, Wlos is thrilled about his involvement in the 2008 presidential election as a member of the press. He kicked off his coverage at Senator Barack Obama’s Super Tuesday victory speech in Chicago, and continues to take interest in the issues and candidates that are making the election so unique. “This election is special,” Wlos said. “There is a great potential for change that inspires people.” At such a young age, Wlos is proof that you don’t need to be a famous politician to be an inspiration! “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.” — President John F. Kennedy infrastructure improvements, and has even set up a savings and loan in the village. Likely his most enduring innovation is the establishment of a farming co-operative where farmers were taught how to plant hybrid corn, then harvest and sell their crops directly to private sector companies as opposed to selling it to brokers and other middle-men who did so for a fee. He did the same with the area’s dairy farmers. Much of this was accomplished through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Chebunyo and some surrounding villages were funded through a local NGO called ACDI/VOCA which does most of the international policy work in regards to development and humanitarian efforts. Just before leaving Kenya, Jim helped build a structure which keeps the corn and milk crops separated, as designated by government rules, and helped plant between 800 to 1,000 tree seedlings in and around the village. Now home, Jim plans to spend some time traveling throughout the United States, visiting family and friends. Eventually, he will return to Utah and quite possibly Progressive Insurance. A master’s degree may be on the horizon as well.

One of the most famous Presidential quotes in the history of the United States and one which has encouraged over 190,000 Americans to serve their country by joining the Peace Corps over the last forty plus years. Jim Flock ’96 is one of a growing number of volunteers. After graduating from Marian, Jim went to John Carroll College where his education and service-minded attitude continued. He worked for Progressive Insurance and was very comfortable in his life, save for one thing. He knew in his heart that he was meant to serve those less fortunate, and then did something about it. For the last two years, Jim has been in Chebunyo, Kenya, a small village five hours’ drive on dirt roads outside of Nairobi. Chebunyo has no services. No running water. No electricity. Jim’s role as a Peace Corps volunteer has been multi-faceted. As a GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) participant, Jim facilitated helping hundreds of young women in leadership, rape counseling and relationship counseling. These young women then returned to their villages to share their knowledge with other young women. He provided AIDS education to the village, has facilitated and coordinated the replanting of vegetation, has written and petitioned for

Tremendous Tribute Paid to U.S. Vets Through Denton's Talents As Catholics, we often hear the phrase “Time, Talent and Treasure.” Marian junior Sandra Denton is a young woman who has unflinchingly given her time and talent for her community. A resident of Country Club Hills, and a member of the multi-award winning Marian Catholic Marching Band, Sandra has volunteered her time and musical abilities to play for Memorial Day services and Veteran’s Day services since she was a freshman. Her first opportunity to play “Taps” was while the mobile replica of the Viet Nam Wall was in the area. “Sandra Denton is a member of a fantastic family that has a long history of volunteering in their community. Her grandparents, aunts and uncles and mother and father have always been involved in community service,” said Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight W. Welch. During marching band season at Marian, Sandra trades in her trumpet for the tuba as the band’s only female tuba player. Sandra Denton ’09 at Veteran’s Day Service

WRESTLING MAKES MARK IN HISTORY, STATE LEVEL Fans of Marian Athletics are used to seeing Spartan basketball players wrestle away hardware from local rivals at the Rich South Big Dipper or Hillcrest Holiday Classic. Rest assured, that occurred again this year. However, the hottest news for Marian sports appears to be the resurgence of a highly competitive wrestling program. Under the guidance of four-time IHSA champion and collegiate All-American Joey Gilbert, the Marian Catholic wrestling program is beginning to move into the team picture among Illinois’ best. “We’re making some pretty strong strides in a lot of different areas, but we still have a lot of improvement to go, especially in regard to depth of the team,” assessed Gilbert, who wrestled at Andrew High School and the University of Michigan. The resurgence began a couple years ago when the traditional East Gym stage was converted to a wrestling room, new mats were purchased and a new mentality followed Gilbert into the door. Now, the results are not coming just in appearance, but on the mats. The Spartan grapplers posted a 23-3 regular-season record, as well as a perfect 7-0 East Suburban Catholic Conference mark that included a victory over powerhouse Marist for the first time in school history. Marian also won the ESCC conference tournament, unseating Marist for the first time since 1981. Behind five individual champions, Marian won the Bloom Township Regional title for its first regional crown since 1997. The Spartans also brought home impressive thirdplace finishes from the prestigious Badger Tournament in Stoughton, Wisconsin and the Geneseo Invitational.

“The kids are really coming together as a team,” Gilbert said of his recipe for success. “We’ve been building the last two years, and this year the camaraderie is there and the leadership is stronger. The kids are really giving it to each other, providing a competitive atmosphere from wrestling to running sprints.” While the early-season numbers look fantastic, the real target remains the postseason, where Marian will look for more IHSA tournament success in the Shepard Individual Sectional and Sandburg Team Sectional. “The goal is to get to the point of winning conference and regional titles, and getting to state as a team,” an energetic Gilbert explained. “What we’ve done here so far is nice, but we came here to win state titles.” Meanwhile, Marian continues to have good news on the hardcourt during the winter campaign. The girls basketball squad advanced to its seventh consecutive Hillcrest Holiday Classic title contest before settling for a second-place finish to ESCC rival Marist. However, the Spartans had defeated the RedHawks in an earlier ESCC meeting to get off to a 7-1 start in ESCC play. The Marian girls kicked off the season 18-5 overall, including a fifth straight Maine West Tipoff Classic crown and impressive wins over ranked foes Maine West and Trinity. Highlights for the men’s basketball team have been limited to victories over traditional rivals Rich East and Marist, although the Spartans earned the Jim Becker Sportsmanship Award for the first time at Big Dipper XXXV. As well, senior Purdue-football recruit Dennis Kelly was named to the

Dipper all-tournament team and long-time Athletic Director Dave Mattio ’66 served as Big Dipper Honorary Manager. More athletes continue to represent Marian in a quickly growing fencing program, where junior Alex Block qualified for the National Junior Olympic Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina on Feb. 15-18.

Steven Murphy ’10 was one of five Spartan wrestlers to qualify for state.

Arizona Meeting Pleasant Surprise Bobbi (Roberta Auron) Halverson ’81, participated in The Fourth Annual White Mountain Half Marathon in Eagar, Arizona on September 15, 2007. This is a small race, at the most, about 150 people, four hours away from Phoenix in the middle of nowhere. While gathering for the race, Bobbi finds another Marian alum Bobbi (Roberta Auron) Halverson ’81 competing right next to her – Sarah Ruhl Cline ’87. Bobbi said, “I always feel kind of sad that I haven’t been able to attend any alumni functions and I miss the camaraderie that everyone enjoys, so it was a huge blessing for me to run into Sarah and get a little bit of Marian, so far from Chicago Heights. I actually got third place for my age group too, even though Sarah still beat me! It was an all around good day.”

Marian Grads Support Relay for Life Relay For Life, American Cancer Society’s (ACS) signature event, is an overnight event in which teams of families, friends and coworkers join together to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against cancer. The Relay For Life of Chicago Heights will be held in Spartan Stadium at Marian Catholic High School. The event will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008 and conclude at 6:00 a.m. the next morning. Relay For Life Team Captains and Members are the heart and soul in the fight against cancer. Teams consist of eight to fifteen people who share a passion to support the work of ACS by raising funds throughout the year and then celebrate at the actual Relay For Life event. If you would like to start or join a team, or volunteer, please contact Colleen (O’Neill) Ranieri ’83 at cmor5@juno.com or 708.267.0385. For other information regarding the American Cancer Society’s programs or services, please contact your local ACS office at 708-633-7770.

Many Marian Catholic Alumni donate heavily to charities and worthy causes when they become successful in their career paths. College students, however are considered the “poorest” people on earth and often believe they should be a charity cause. That certainly hasn’t deterred Julie Vaughan ’06, a sophomore at the University of Missouri. In her first year on campus, she became involved with Relay for Life, a springtime fund-raiser that benefits the American Cancer Society. “This cause is really important to me because my mom (Beverly) was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of ’06,” Julie Vaughan explained. “After surgery and chemotherapy, she beat cancer in about four months. “Last year I become involved with Relay for Life by becoming a team captain. I found the experience to be truly rewarding! This year I wanted to become more involved with the event. I currently hold a position on the Steering Committee that plans the entire event for the University of Missouri Relay for Life.” The April 12-13 event on campus will feature a survivor dinner, survivor/caregiver laps, a Luminaria Ceremony and information about the American Cancer Society and inspirational survivors. While the event itself is a major undertaking, the heart of Vaughan’s cause is generated through the Relay for Life web site. Julie Vaughan’s page may be found at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/julievaughan.

Gaffney’s Provide Impact In Needy Honduras Area

Marian Trio Provides Hit For DePaul Fashion Benefit

Antonio and Tim Gaffney ’67

Ana Carlasare ’05 and Maura O’Donnell ’05

A spark here...a spark there…and soon…a roaring fire! That’s exactly how it happened. Sr. Kathleen Kenny, a teacher at Marian, had visited some Dominican Sisters in Zambia and desired to share their story. Joelyn Carlasare, also on the faculty at Marian, helped her prepare a power point presentation, and brought the story home. Ana Carlasare ’05, a junior at DePaul University, pondered her mother’s re-telling of the story, imagined the poor who suffer from AIDS, and became determined to help. A spark here…a spark there…a roaring fire! For several months, Ana worked on preparing a fashion show, a project she conceived to raise funds to assist the Dominican Alliance (several Dominican congregations in the United States) to help the Dominican Sisters in Zambia, Africa, improve the life of their people. Specifically, every $10 contributed secures medicine for one unborn infant, carried by an HIV/AIDS mother, to be born free of the disease. Ana set about organizing the project. Working through the Ambassadors Club of DePaul University and in cooperation with the school’s AIDS Organization, plus engaging two other Marian alums, Maura O’Donnell ’05 and Valerie Ruiz ’05, Ana put together a great show and wonderful evening! Cortelyou Commons, a vintage building on the campus of DePaul University, was reserved. Akira, an upscale clothier in Chicago, lent $35,000 worth of their latest line of clothing; tickets and posters were printed, donations were secured. DePaul students (nearly one hundred of them) tried-out for their debut as models, supper refreshments were granted through Uncle Sammy’s Sandwich Classics, gift baskets were prepared as door prizes, and lighting and sound were in order. Sparks were flying! Numerous last minute details were tended to by generous student volunteers and supportive parents. The show began…the fire was blazing! The evening was a huge success. Attendance topped 300 guests, models were gorgeous and handsome, outfits were a smashing hit, refreshments were perfect. Best of all, over $3,000 was contributed to the Zambian Dominicans half a world away. The desire to be of service and the generosity which that entails, are sparks within us all. Ana, Maura, and Valerie fanned their sparks into a roaring fire for the sake of others. The fashion show is over, but the glow of goodness remains thanks to our grads!

Tim Gaffney ’67 mixing concrete in Honduras

In February, Tim Gaffney ’67 spent time in Siguatepeque, about a two hour drive from the capital of Honduras, to help with a construction project. The trip was set up by the Church of the Epiphany in the Dallas, Texas area with the purpose of providing Christian education and construction of a new school. The Bishop of Honduras, Bishop Allen, feels strongly that the only way to break the cycle of poverty in this democratic country is through education. Tim and the other 18 people on this trip helped with that during their week-long mission. The construction team laid concrete cinder block walls for a new school facility. Each member of the team is required to pay for the full cost of their trip as well as any vaccinations for tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis that are necessary. Tim states, “I go to Honduras with a servant’s heart and a worker’s resolve to make life better for these people. Helping build a school and providing education is the only way out of a life of poverty for this country. Personally for me, it is a life changing experience to recognize, in the midst of extreme poverty, the glory of God in the eyes of these beautiful people…especially the children. To be able to worship with them is also a gift.” If you would like to help future missions to Honduras, please make out a check to “Church of the Epiphany” and in the memo section write “Honduras Mission.” Mail the check to Tim Gaffney, Honduras Mission, 813 Morningside Trail, Murphy, TX 75094.

Marian Catholic Parents who attended recent information sessions about drug testing echoed the question: Why would a school consider mandatory drug testing when its drugs use, according to the University of Michigan’s “Monitoring the Future” research, is far less than the national and local averages? The University of Michigan Survey is conducted across the country and states that 40 percent of high school students have used an illicit drug by graduation. Meanwhile, Marian Catholic students show a 10 percent experimentation rate prior to graduation. With that differential, why mandate drug testing for the entire student body at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year? “I have my own conflicted feelings about testing most of our kids who have made great choices, but this can be a tool for prevention and intervention,” notes MCHS President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey. With regard to the type of test, parents at meetings were comfortable with the hair sample approach after a presentation by Bill Dausey of Psychomedics Corporate Testing. Parental concerns, however, included the cost factor for a generally drug-free community and school and parental responsibilities. “Youngsters today are growing up in an increasingly complicated society,” according to Advisory Board member and sophomore parent Vince Krydynski ’81. “What was taboo when I was in high school is now the common themes in music videos, television, the Internet and tabloids. The popular images today tend to pull kids away from the values responsible parents are working so hard to instill. “Marian is taking a leadership role in helping students and families navigate the difficult waters of teen drug use/prevention. The drug-testing program gives me, as a parent, comfort knowing that Marian Catholic actively supports my decision to keep my daughter free from drugs. It gives my daughter another reason to say “No.” It provides early intervention and counseling in a safe environment for any student struggling with drug use. This is another example of Marian Catholic High School working with parents to instill positive influences in the lives of young adults and enforcing the values and beliefs we have in our homes.” Marian Catholic has recently introduced a copyrighted Leadership Program to benefit all students. Having each student live a drug-free life is a part of that program. “Marian is aware that students are faced with a culture of drugs and alcohol from the media and society,” Marian Principal Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait explained. “Often that makes it more difficult for students to be proud of being drug free. A testing program, as well as concepts of our Leadership Program, helps diffuse the culture outside and supports the pride students can take in positive choices.” Sr. Kathleen Anne also led the student information sessions about the testing program. Marian’s published materials to be made available prior to student registration for 2008-2009, detail the process, including method, confidentiality notification, referral format and retesting policy.

Students entering 9th grade or current high school students must be enrolled at Marian Catholic. Campers register for grades they will be entering in the fall. For more information check our website www.marianchs.com or contact Diana McDonnell (708-756-9418 or dmcdonnell@marianchs.com).

Marian Catholic High School prides itself on the fact that nearly 100 percent of its students voluntarily participate in service to others. For the Alumni Association Hall of Fame Class of 2008, service is a hallmark of the entire class of inductees. Whether it’s service to or representing Marian Catholic, service in spreading the word about the excellence of Marian Catholic, or helping out others in the neighborhood and community, this group is one that should make the entire Marian Catholic family proud. Headed by Alumna of the Year Camille (Zarantonello) Blachowicz ’62, the Class of 2008 Hall of Famers were honored at the annual dinner on February 21 at Olympia Fields Country Club. With a group that has so much to offer, let’s meet the 2008 Alumni Association Hall of Famers.

is a faculty member there,” Blachowicz said. “I certainly feel we share the academic legacy; we all have advanced degrees and all have gone into teaching or have done some teaching. Marian was a disciplined place and, when I was there, I felt the faculty and school were committed to educating all of us. “We also have the same sense of being responsible for others and for giving back, which was a real part of the Marian ethos.”

to whatever situation arises,” Piekarski explained. “I view a team approach as working with others toward a common goal, giving 110 percent no matter what the situation and remaining very committed to your goal even when you are feeling discouraged.”

Camille (Zarantonello) Blachowicz ’62, Alumna of the Year Alumna of the Year Blachowicz sets the standard for all educators at Marian and beyond. The Professor of Education and Director of Reading Program at National-Louis University has been named Outstanding Educator of the Year (2002) and is also a member of the International Reading Association Hall of Fame. “Success really takes hard work, creativity and a lot of luck,” explained Blachowicz, who has authored several books on literacy and education. “I’m not sure of the percentages there–they all feed in. With respect to Marian, I think the women teachers were incredibly empowering to the female students. “They offered the same sense of support that I felt from my family, who also provided me with the means to have 16 years of Catholic education and also a sense that we could do anything we put our minds to. I have always thought of my high school classmates as some of the brightest, funniest and verbally quickest group of people I have ever met. Having the ‘Marian Experience’ was a golden one for me.” Blachowicz has had her research supported by grants from several foundations and associations, while she's frequently welcomed as a speaker for local, national and international education conferences. For Blachowicz and her family, the education route was always a natural one. “My two brothers (Joe ’67, Matt ’73) and I all went to Marian, and my cousin Linda Savick

Lisa (Boyd) Piekarski ’87, Athlete of the Year In a new millennium, it is very common for Marian female athletes to earn college scholarships in their sport. However, Lisa Boyd Piekarski ’87 did so in an era that made her a true pioneer in such recognition. A member of Marian’s Sweet 16 IHSA volleyball qualifier in 1985, Boyd ultimately earned a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. At Madison, she enjoyed a successful volleyball career and earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Investment & Banking, and Risk Management & Insurance. Lisa has already been inducted into the University of Wisconsin Hall of Fame and Marian is pleased to be “catching up.” “My Marian teachers and the administration were very supportive of me during the recruiting and school selection process,” Boyd recalled. “Academically, Marian had a strong influence on me. One example is a mandatory Study Skills class. The class showed us techniques for studying and retaining information that I used in college. I would not have been able to graduate on the Business School’s Dean’s list had I not taken this class.” “Probably the most profound influence on me was a class I took at Marian called Discovery in Service. The experience left me thankful for the life I had and showed me how helping others can be rewarding. The experience still influences my family life and career today. Also, I try to instill in my children the desire to help others.” After spending time to raise children Kyle (10), Drew (7) and Trevor (5) along with husband Tim, Piekarski has resumed her career at Marcus Capital, LLC, where she does equity investment research and portfolio management. In part because of her training at Marian and managing a demanding athletic career, Piekarski successfully manages the roles of career and outstanding wife and mother. “I believe the secret to my success is being very goal-oriented and taking a team approach 10

Colin Egglesfield ’91, Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement Colin Egglesfield ’91 is no stranger to most, as he plays “Josh Madden” daily on popular Soap Opera All My Children. Additionally, Egglesfield owns his own clothing company, “Shout Out!” where he gains the opportunity to work as a designer and model as well. “Being on All My Children has been a great job because it allowed me to live my dream of being a working actor in my favorite city, New York,” explained Egglesfield, who graduated from the University of Iowa before starting off his modeling career in places like Milan, Paris, London and Tokyo. “I’m able to participate in numerous charity fund-raising opportunities on a regular basis, which gives me a great feeling knowing that I’m contributing to help make some people’s lives a little bit better. Marian prepared me for college life by introducing me to the means and knowledge necessary to succeed academically and vocationally, but also instilled in me the importance of being a morally and socially responsible person.” Whether through service or on the screen, Egglesfield has had significant experience in the public eye in a young career. Prior to his role on All My Children, Egglesfield made appearances in the likes of Law and Order: SVU, Leap of Faith, Lost in Oz, Charmed, Nip/Tuck, Gilmore Girls and movies Must Love Dogs and Beautiful Dreamer. While Egglesfield has been lucky to experience so much, he warns Marian students that it doesn’t all come by chance. “Create your own luck,” said the avid runner who has raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Team for Kids and the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation through marathons. “What I’ve learned is that it’s not necessarily the best or most talented person who gets the job, it’s the one who stuck it out the longest when things got difficult. “My experience at Marian was one of incredible discovery. I felt a sense of pride not only with what I was learning and able to accomplish, but with the feeling that I belonged

to and was part of continuing Marian’s reputation of academic and athletic excellence. In the classroom, my teachers prepared me for the rigorous demands of college and the workplace, and what I learned from my coaches and athletics was the vision to set my sights on a goal and the discipline and persistence to achieve my dreams.” James and Anita Jackson, Spirit of Marian James and Anita Jackson are extremely pleased with the foundation four of their children gained from Marian Catholic, as it fits right in the example they set as Marian parents. Extremely involved with the Athletic Booster Club and Mothers Club, the Jackson’s provided brilliant insight and support to both groups during their formative years. “Marian Catholic reinforced the basic principles we conveyed to our children,” said Anita Jackson, who watched James ’87, Marta ’91, Edward ’93 and April (Wayne) ’93 graduate from Marian. “It helped keep them grounded in faith and emphasized the value and rewards of fair play, perseverance and loyalty.” Jim’s strong support for the Boosters and for the track and football teams was memorable. “Jim and Anita were interested participants in many of the organizing activities that set the direction of MCHS for the 90’s and into the millennium,” Athletic Director Dave Mattio ’66 praised. “Volunteerism, participation and ownership were a constant thread with their commitment to MCHS. The recognition is truly deserved.” In the meantime, Anita made her mark on the Mothers Club, creating manuals still used today as models for Mothers Club events, and leading as club president with a gracious inclusion. Later, as a Marian Catholic High School Board member, Anita participated in the Long-Range plan and Partnership 2000, which eventually left Marian with its West Gym and Band Room. The owners of DeSoto LLC (manufacturing and processing of specialty chemicals) set an early example at Marian for a cooperation of students, faculty and parents within the Dominican tradition. When the DeSoto plant moved, the Jackson’s gifted office furniture to Marian. “It was the first ‘new’ furniture in years and the first conference room furniture we ever had,” recalled President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey ’67. "We were thrilled and, with good stewardship, much of it is still in use.” Jim and Anita Jackson typify the spirit of

many Marian parents and, for them, Marian returned the favor. In their words, "Marian provided a solid atmosphere that supported parental involvement in the educational process." Joe Dee, Lifetime Achievement Award While Joe Dee has never carried the moniker of “teacher,” his involvement as coach, administrator, volunteer, chairperson, father and grandfather have made him a teacher to hundreds, perhaps thousands. Following his son, Jim, into the Marian Hall of Fame (Spirit of Marian, 2002), Dee has been coaching, officiating and organizing for other people virtually since his playing days ended at Thornton Junior College (football) and the University of Illinois (baseball). Along with wife of 46 years, Bernice, Dee has sent sons Jim ’80, Tom ’81, Tim ’85 and John ’88 through Marian. Grandson Matt ’07 began the next generation at Marian, followed by Meaghan ’09 and more of his 13 grandchildren are on the way. “Marian has played a big part in raising our four sons,” explained Dee, a former Marian Booster Club officer. “I am proud to say they are good husbands and fathers, and are all involved in their churches and communities. It takes more than being a parent to raise a child and Marian definitely has been a big influence in their development. “The impact that Marian has is evident to me every day by its graduates. The Christian values they have learned here help them become good leaders at home, at work, as well as in the community.” Primarily through the involvement of his sons, Joe Dee has coached at St. Joseph and St. Agnes in Chicago Heights, Olympia Terrace, the Chicago Heights Park District, Catholic Grammar School football and Small Fry Basketball. A Eucharistic Minister for 39 years, Joe has also been an Illinois High School Association official for 24 years in three sports, working state championship football games in 2004 and 2007 and basketball in 2008. “I am honored and surprised to receive this honor, because what I have done in my life is just what I was taught growing up,” Dee said. “That’s to use the gifts I’ve been given to help others. Having gone through 12 years of Catholic education, I learned that volunteering was very important. To receive this honor from such a prestigious institution as Marian is humbling.” 11

Phonathon: It’s All About Good People

Callers Steve Wolff and Pat Jonikaitis try to “ring the bell” at Phonathon ’08.

Basketball players chip in at Phonathon ’08, including Teagan Walsh ’11, Val Finnin ’10 and Jamie Johnson ’11.

More than 250 student and parent volunteers gathered in the MCHS Library to call alumni and fellow parents. Our phonathoners have raised over $60,000 in pledges, connecting with over 10,000 parents and alumni. Friends of Marian Catholic may pledge or gift the Phonathon through the secure website link at https://www.marianchs.com/advancement/checkout/advancement_form.aspx. The Phonathon portion of the Marian Annual Fund this year is earmarked to help support the entire school operation, especially the Sr. Simeon Fund (student tuition aid) for those with emergency issues and verified need, the implementation of pilot distance learning courses, and adoption of Computer Assisted Design in the graphic design courses. This popular event, coordinated by Peg Massucci of the Advancement Office, is co-chaired by current and alumni parents Sue Dawson and Nancy and Tim Hathhorn. Phonathon volunteers return year after year, some even long after their student has graduated. Massucci said, “We’ve had more alumni parents than current parents on our Phonathon Committee. We get calls from alumni parents to say they hadn’t been contacted to participate as phonathoners. Needless to say, we sign them up! In fact, this year, after seeing an article about the Phonathon in Marian Matters, an alumni parent whose son graduated in 1988...yes, ’88…emailed to say she’d like to help as a Phonathoner. “We are blessed to have people like this at Marian Catholic: parents who, even after 20 years out, still give of themselves. MCHS parents are quick to step up when called upon because they simply want to do whatever they can to help. The best part about being a Phonathoner is that you can do a tremendous amount of service and good just by giving a few hours of time.” It’s been said that “friend-raising" and fun are major factors that make this Marian Catholic hallmark the popular volunteer phenomena it is each year. If you have any questions or comments, or if you would like to help with next year´s Phonathon, please contact Peg Massucci (708-756-9427or pmassucci@marianchs.com). Thank you to all in the Marian Catholic community for your generosity and your continued commitment to excellence.

ZARANTONELLO’S ‘PARISH TWINNING’ PROVIDES HAITI RELIEF at the end of January. They witnessed first-hand all the good the donations have done and will continue to do and Joe showed his slides to MCHS classes during Lenten Mission Week. For further info, contact the St. Joseph Haiti Fund, 320 West Stephen Foster Avenue, Bardstown, Kentucky 40004.

Joe Zarantonello ’67 has lived in Bardstown, Kentucky for 25 years and taught at St. Joseph Catholic School for nearly all of that time. During his tenure, a program called “Parish Twinning” came to be where the St. Joseph parish was matched with St. Francis Xavier parish in Akil Samdi, Haiti. Akil Samdi in the native Creole language, loosely translates to “dead-end in a graveyard,” which accurately depicts life in the mountain village with no running water, no electricity and no medical facilities. About 20 years ago, students at St. Joseph began an Advent penny drive, collecting about 65,000 pennies (or about $650) and sent it to help the children of Akil Samdi. Over the years the amounts increased and this past Advent Fund Drive for Haiti raised just over $19,000. Joe said that because of the very generous contributions both on-line and through the parish, every student at the grade school in Akil Samdi will be fed for a year. There is even enough left to extend help to the children in the pre-school program as well. For some of these children, this is their only meal of the day, and many of them must walk for hours just to attend school. The money raised also goes toward paying the salaries of the teachers at the school – about $50 per month. $25 will feed a child for a year. Joe and his daughter Elizabeth, along with another high school girl and her father, took suitcases filled with pediatric medicines to Haiti

Marian Catholic High School’s Speech Team advanced two entries to the IHSA state meet at Neuqua Valley High School, represented by freshman Joseph Wlos in Extemporaneous Speaking as well. “The Marian students embraced the Performance in the Round with outstanding, touching performances at the state meet,” praised Coach Mark Donaway, who was assisted by Tom Sweeney. “Marian received seven first-place votes from a panel of eight judges, which was a state record. Many coaches from across the state said Marian has changed PIR in the state of Illinois forever.” The Performance in the Round entry, Lovers by Brian Friel, earned a second-place in the Oak Lawn Sectional Tournament. The group includes seniors Jim Slawnikowski, Mike Friar and Mike Losos, juniors Julie Zielinski, Mary Jones and Paul Obbagy, and sophomores Ali Schwieger, Jaime Patriarca, Jonathan Williamsen, Kate Bryzgalski, Sam Kirschenheiter and Tony Vaughn.
