No matter where you are, cities bestow different opportunities that allow for all sorts of exploration and possibilities within the context of chaos and order. They are places that bring a lot of people together and being able to design spaces that help create a balance and harmony within that chaos and order is one thing that motivates me as a Landscape Architect.

CLIMATE CHANGE: MOVING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE By Mariam Were and Shibani Debnath This study of Big Bear Creek Watershed opportunistically explores sustainability of farming at multiple scales, with the goal of diversifying a farmer’s portfolio based on biodiversity and profitability.

Data Analysis Soy Beans Corn

The study looks to change the mono cropping culture practiced in Iowa. It focuses on various parameters that were achieved from research on the value of the product in terms of pounds and acres. Gilman

Current conditions showing parcels with corn, soy beans and grasslands. Area of watershed: 30,394 acres

Grinnell

Proposed Agricultural Land Use Combination 1: Biofuel Crops Switchgrass + Sorghum + Annual and Perennial Sunflowers + Alfa Alfa Area: 1,826 acres

Combination 2: Production Crops Flax + Rye + Corn/Soy Area: 1,862 acres

REVIVAL MEMORIAL PARK: Phytoremediation By Mariam Were, Hannah Becker, Shibani Debnath and Cassandra Schilling

A redesign of the Agriculture Street Landfill from a toxic living space into an unconscious recreational space. It has an environmental focus on site remediation through phytoremediation, introducing bacteria and fungi, geotextiles, and lowland plant remediation. Throughout the site you will find a community center, an open-air pavilion inspired by the classic shotgun house, an art deck with lower viewing, resting areas, and a raised lookout tower to enjoy surrounding views.

The grand Live Oak allĂŠe entrance leads to a sunken memorial in remembrance of all the hardships the families placed on this site faced; it is the heart of the park. The rain garden in its center symbolizes new life even in difficult times. Existing Parks SketchUp model by Mariam Were

THE FAIRGROUND NEIGHBOURHOOD: Gateway Entrance By Mariam Were and Sujing May

The design revolves around the concept of the Double Ferris wheel located at the midway, and is one of the spectacles of the Iowa State Fair. It involves many vibrant colours that are brought out through the use of vegetation and blooming, especially during the 11 days of the Iowa State Fair. In addition, the design also incorporates a free lawn space and a plaza that are spacious and can be used for recreation, meetings, and community events.
