Clotted Bodies in Paradise 08.07.2017 – 26.08.2017

The first solo presentation of Audrey Salmon with ROOM focuses on the effects and aftermath of the transition from the Industrial to the Digital Era, a world filled with electronics and multiple (continuous) connections. The exhibition consists of multimedia installations, text, sound and performance based elements. The era we live in creates the illusion of a fast moving, all-knowing and an almost omnipresent understanding of the world. A world that has been summarized into a sort of mono-aesthetic of what our desire, emotion, knowledge should be on a global scale. Reality seems to have been reduced into a few pixels, emoticons or memes. This being the lure, the best bait for catching happiness pretending to guaranty the sensational in the size of a snapshot. In these terms and conditions, the future is likely to last forever. Through visual, audio, writing, borrowed text, multi-media installation and displaced elements, Clotted Bodies In Paradise is addressing the condition of human connectivity of the early XXIst Century with its frustration, paradox and pleasure, re-representing and re-restaging both body and time. The exhibition presents an almost endless and reassuring cultural space of exchange - influenced and mediated by pop culture, social media, advertising, massmedia and the internet - where fantasy, hope and ideal seem to take place organically and freely. Salmon investigates what she calls the mono-hegemonic-aesthetic of Paradise on Earth that reigns over instant digital and virtual entertainment. The work states the urge of re-taking possession of time and images to maybe extract the essence of what dream / utopia one could imagine.

ABOUT ROOM

ROOM is an independent multi-disciplinary gallery including a project-based space that offers monthly programming showcasing young and emergent artists. In September 2015, ROOM relocated to new premises on the ground floor of Ellis House building in New Doornfontein, Johannesburg. We are pleased to be the latest addition to an area that is home to several exciting creative spaces and developments (both new and existing) including the King Kong Building which houses VANSA & Keleketla Library (Verwey Street), August House (End Street), and of course the infamous Troyeville Hotel. We see this move as a great opportunity to further contribute to a broader art community in the inner city. www.roomgallery.co.za Maria Fidel Regueros - maria@roomgallery.co.za / +27 (0) 82 373 6127 Jemma Dwyer - jemma@roomgallery.co.za / +27 (0) 76 593 9408 Zinhle Zwane - zinhle@roomgallery.co.za / +27 (0) 65 804 5808
