President’s Report The best query I have been asked across multiple age groups is “What is Our Club’s Focus ?”. To help we have drafted up the following Club Vision.

Lindfield Junior Rugby Club Vision Lindfield Junior Rugby Club's focus is participation. We aim to offer a spot for all levels of ability, from potential Wallabies to those that just want a run in the park with their mates. Subject to age group numbers we aim to field teams in the range of grades from A to G and everything in between.

Our vision is, every player enjoys their rugby and improves their skills each season.

The club's goal in grading is to assess each team on its merits and request appropriate grading. The focus is a grade where players enjoy their rugby and learn something. We don't focus on, say a team in every age group A grade or # grand finals, but try to ensure players are not hammered each week and likewise, they are not smashing weaker teams regularly. If teams are graded correctly and players enjoy their footy, the A grade teams and grand finals will come. They are an outcome of appropriate grading, not an aim in themselves.

The club is also open to everyone. Lindfield doesn't poach players, but if a player approaches the club freely from out of the local community, subject to SJRU rules on transfer, suspension from other codes and number constraints in the age groups, we have are willing to accept all, throughout the season. Indeed it is discriminatory not to.

One long-term coach recently commented at an end of season function "These boys may, or may not play together again but they will run into each other around the traps and they will always have the connection, " I used to play rugby for Lindfield with you".

As a Committee we are proud to say Lindfield Junior Rugby has a tradition of "Building friends and skills for life."

2012 Season Highlights Our Club continues to grow with over 530 registered players during the season with 17 Minis teams (U6 through U9) and 18 Midis Teams (U10 through U16s). Our invitational Minis Gala Day at season commencement continues to be a great success with both Narrabeen and Tryon Ovals used to host the increased number of teams participating from all Village Clubs.

Congratulations to the seven Lindfield Teams that made it through to Grand Finals (approximately 40% of our teams) slightly ahead of our 6 teams last year. It was especially pleasing to see all of our U12 Teams make it through to the Grand Final.

Our U16 Tartans and U12 Bucks were successful Premiership victors and our U10 Tartans won its Plate Grand Final. In addition, we had five Minor Premiership Teams – U16 Tartans, U15 Tartans (only loss of the season was the grand final), U12 Tartans, U12 Highlanders and U11 Bucks. Our U15 Tartans, U12 Tartans, U14 Lindfield/Norths and U11 Bucks unfortunately lost their Grand Finals. Additionally our U11 Stags, U10 Stags and U11 Highlanders lost their Plate Grand finals.

These excellent results continue to reflect the efforts of all of our coaches and managers and the significant time they devote throughout the season in helping our players enjoy their rugby. The Club continued its investment in ongoing coach education through the use of Terry Preston (Gordon 1st Grade halfback) for specialist coaching of our Midis Teams and overarching coach support for all of our Minis Teams each Friday night throughout the season.

Our ongoing ARU Education program continued to provide Level 2, Level 1 and Smart Rugby accreditation to all of our parents involved with Coaching. Most pleasing was our improvement with both Assistant Referee and Accredited Referee Accreditations. A special thanks to Michael Green for his role on working hard with SJRU and Sydney Referees throughout the season. Building our Accredited Referees for the 2013 Season will be a top priority.

Our ongoing commitment to capital works continued with our new Gear Shed at Tryon No. 1 Oval, the additional storage space will be well utilised for our 2013 Season. The Committee is currently working closely with Ku-ring-gai Council regarding upgrading the lighting to Tryon No. 1 Oval. We will continue to progress these discussions during summer with a view to having upgraded lights for the 2013 season. A special thanks to the significant efforts of Mark Rechner and his ongoing liaison role with Council throughout the season and to Jim Breen for his role in finalising the Shed construction.

This year marks the end of Denise Saar’s support in managing Koola Oval canteen over an extended number of years – Denise will be greatly missed !! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and helpers that assisted with canteen duty throughout the season at both Koola and Tryon Ovals.

Isabel Heaven has brought new energy and enthusiasm to our Friday night Minis Training BBQ and canteen and the Club appreciates the strengthening linkage with Ben Elston and the Senior Lindfield Rugby Club in managing the bar each week.

In a similar manner, Brooke Stuart has brought new energy and ideas to our Social functions throughout the year with a large team of key support personnel making each event a success. The change of venue and theme for our annual dinner was a great success (thanks to U13s and Geoff Sullivan). This event is our annual fundraiser and enables the Club to make both capital improvement investments and provide professional coaching support to enable the ongoing success of the Club. Other key social events during the season included Jersey and Jeans (thanks to U11 helpers), Golf Day (U9s and Mark Tunnicliffe) and Presentation Day (U8s and Dave McCredie). A special thanks to all of the numerous helpers to these events throughout the year.

The inbound Kawanishi Tour was highly successful with special thanks to Jon and Jacinta Gill and the entire Kawanishi Committee.

The highlight of the tour was Ian Williams as our guest speaker/tour patron providing both Japanese and English speeches of his Japanese and Wallaby experiences. We look forward to our boys touring Japan during the 2013 season.

Lee Burnett has once again ensured the FEED was published regularly during the season and acknowledged our sponsors.

Our season awards seek to acknowledge a number of our parents that contribute over a significant number of seasons (and in some cases a decade) to the success of the Club. It is always difficult to reduce down to our final winners, hopefully a number of additional parents can be recognised next year. This year’s recipients are detailed overpage.

John Sears has continued to be the backbone of our Committee as Vice President Midis and will be sorely missed next season – enjoy the chance to watch on the sidelines. Andrew Heaven has continued to provide significant time through both his U12 Age Group and Vice President Minis role – thanks for your mentoring throughout the year. Damian (Ticka) Tynan has continued his significant involvement in switching committee roles to Secretary and still finding time to organise both our photo day and trophies/awards for Presentation Day. Campbell Nicholas has been our quiet achiever as Gear Steward for another outstanding season. Andrew Hutton has excelled as Registrar (with support from Ticka) and David Pozzecco as our other new committee member has established a new benchmark of Sponsorship success.

Mark Rechner’s success in liaising with Ku-ring-gai Council has enabled a number of extra games to be played that would have otherwise been called off due to wet weather and his efforts with Space and Brett Fawcett in improving the state of our ovals early season has been significant.

A special note of thanks to our outgoing Treasurer James Sutton.

James has provided significant support in this role over an extended number of years as well as assisting Gordon Junior Rugby in a similar role. Mark (Space) Houston in his role as Club Coach is irreplaceable with his rapport and energy to all our players across our age groups and has been well supported by Steve Thompsett for our Minis. Space and his pre-season training with support from Terry Preston has become an institution for late January Sundays and will be back for our 2013 season.

John Clark has done a sterling job over the past 3+ years recreating our Club website into a professional communication tool. His devotion and continuation this season without a child playing will be missed next season. Thanks to Margot Reimer for looking after our Year Book and all of our Age Group Managers for efforts throughout the year.

Congratulations to all of our players for a highly successful season with special acknowledge of our boys reaching both 100 and 150 games for the Club. This is a highlight of the season and I look forward to presenting the boys with their jerseys at Presentation Day. This year also marks us seeking to publicly acknowledge the parents that have contributed at least 5 years and 10 years of service to the Club – the Club success is based on this commitment. Finally, congratulations to all of our players that have gained representative success this season and we look forward to their ongoing success in the years ahead.

Special note of thanks to my wife Amber and our children (Lachlan – U15 Bucks, Zac – U8 Stags and Jade – keen Club supporter) for their support throughout the season.

I look forward to a strong attendance at our AGM in October 2012 at West Lindfield Recreation Club. The Club appreciates the support from our parents in taking up Club roles.

U6 BUCKS The future of Rugby at Lindfield is safe if the under 6 Bucks are anything to go by. A finer group of young rugby enthusiasts there may never have been. Strong, fast and well coached - a formidable side that completed the year undefeated (15 draws!!). The team in 2012 was made up of various levels of experience: there were the 5 year olds who had been hardened in the winter of 2011 as 4 year olds; the boys and girl who had taken the hard knocks in the backyard from older siblings and were grateful to be playing opposition the same age; and finally a sprinkling of those that were coming to rugby for the first time. By season’s end they were a cohesive unit with the best under 6 defence in Sydney – it was only that they wanted a turn with the ball that they let the opposition score.

The team was made up of Jo “the Bull” Andronicus who showed a flair for scoring long range tries and a determination to make his presence felt. Lachie “Turner” Bissell, often played on the wing linking up with his 2 fullbacks to spark the attack and shut down the opposition in defence. Oliver “Lightening” Gunns who flashed around the field with such speed he must be able to turn the light off and get into bed before it gets dark. Ignatius “the terrier” Houston, was involved in everything and performed the tag/tackle of the season. Stuart “Will Genia” Hudson, handled the ball twice in every movement and is commended for coming back from a multitude of injuries to finish every game. The Martin twins – Will and Emily – who sparked more than one comparison to the Ella brothers with the amazing understanding between them and their remarkable long range tries. William “the fullback” McCarthy, showed his prodigious boot on kick off and made more try saving tags than Kurtley Beale does in a season. George “Pocock” Palmer, excelled in defence and attack and looks ready for tackle rugby (that could be a long 2 year wait!). Archer “Bulldozer” Rayner only knows one way to go – straight ahead and finally Isaac “Usain Bolt” Sheriff who frequently scored so quickly from the kick-off that the rest of our team was left wondering why we were always defending.

A great season was had by all. Special thanks to Head Coach Mat Hudson, who has done an amazing job with the kids, and Sally Palmer, who stepped in as assistant coach/medical officer/trainer/cheerleader. All players, coaches and parents have vowed to return next year to do it all again.

U6 ELKS The Under 6 Elks of 2012 had a very enjoyable year, in what was a very tightly contested under six competition. We went through the year undefeated, although there was a number of closely contested draws. All the boys improved throughout the season and I am sure there will plenty of future Wallabies from the great Elks side of 2012.

We had a big team this year with a mixture of experienced 5 years old’s in their second year of rugby with a splattering of 4 years old’s, with raw talent and enthusiasm. The boys started the season with a bang at the Lindfield Gala day, playing 3 games and meeting Tah Man. The boys built momentum all year and by season’s end they certainly understood the basics of the game and were developing an enjoyment of team sport. The best games of the year were the last two, against Mosman and Hunters Hill. Well done Elks, I was very proud of each of you.

Friday night trainings were eagerly attended by the boys. A big thanks to all the mums and dads who came and helped out each week. Whilst on the subject of thanking people I would also like to give a special thanks to our beautiful age co-ordinator Lucy Basten and also the majestic Catriona Harrison, the Elks team manager. I would also like to thank Robbie Warren for his help coaching and for being a willing referee each home game.

There were so many Elk highlights, I decided to summarise my top 12 big ones for the season:

           

Oranges at half time...snakes at full time.

Nicky’s massive improvement in defence ... “2 more tags and you will get a milk shake” great encouragement Dad Harley tried very hard all season. Well done on winning the trophy in the last game.

Will was “willing” in attack and defence and had a great season. Well done.

Tom R’s was always there in attack and defence, he scored some awesome tries.

Tom Q had many memorable runs on his way to the try line. Speed and the swerve were all there.

Jamie’s enjoyed some explosive runs up the middle of the paddock and was impressive in defense.

Charlie is a true finisher and he scored some great tries. A big smile was always there.

Ollie’s big smiles and big runs down the centre of the field were a feature.

Monty’s big birthday game and his outstanding end of season form. Well done Campbell’s darting runs round the ruck and his ability to crash over for tries. Just awesome.

All the boys that won the man of the match player trophy. W ell done.

All in all it was a very enjoyable year for all involved especially the coach and I hope to see you all next year.

Sandy Basten (the Big Elk)

U7 HIGHLANDERS The U7 Highlanders proved once again to be a formidable force during the 2012 season, living up to the 'Steamrollers' tag with their creative attacks and fearless defence.

Our forward pack led by Oscar Williams-Masters, Kosei Omura and Mitch (the machine) Allen-Paterson dominated at the scrum and line outs and allowed clean ball to our powerful centres, James (Jimmy) O'Meara and Will (Haysie) Hayes, who scored countless tries during the season.

Our halves were the Payne brothers (Josh and Sam) who jumped onto any loose ball and brought continuity and structure when needed most. The Bro’s fed our outside backs quick ball which led to numerous tries to the elusive Will Carlaw and Ollie Pozzecco (The big O). Our wingers in Ben (Love that dive Benny!) Tunnicliffe and Sam Terry enjoyed open space to show their true speed and agility.

Our defensive pattern was impeccable and often frustrated the opposition. The boys learnt to tackle in the latter part of the season and are definitely ready to step up next year to tackle in the U8’s. All the boys enjoyed being part of a team environment with their mates and playing the best game of all...Rugby!

U7 BUCKS If the number one goal of mini rugby is to have a lot of fun, then the U7 Bucks sure kicked that goal. We all had a terrific time, and the boys managed to learn a lot about the game as well (rugby that is; although I suspect that some of them honed their "rugby octopus" skills at least as much).

We started with a diverse group of boys from 3 or 4 different schools, several of whom had not played rugby before. The boys tried really hard and played the game in a wonderful spirit.

They all seem to be very keen to move on to the next phase of rugby development, and particularly the tackle!

The game day experiences ranged from the game against Chatswood which began with the abject horror of seeing two girls on the other side and then progressed to the - far greater - horror of seeing them score half a dozen tries each, through to getting "owned" by Hornsby. But somehow, the boys managed to eek out a draw every single week (the scorecard from the Hornsby game has been mysteriously lost).

The little man from the Man of the Match trophy has taken early retirement. He is in intensive therapy having had both legs broken no less than 4 times. He lives in a dark cupboard now, and mutters strange little phrases like "please no, don't let the 6 year old boy take me to bed" and "not the dog come on not the dog" and sometimes "dude, don't let your baby sister play with me,Nooo”. Odd. Lachlan Nelson won the first Man of the Match trophy with a fabulous attacking effort at the Gala Day. The coach ran out of fingers to count the number of tries…...Josh played strongly all year, and ran up no fewer than 6 tries in one game. Josh's little brother can hardly keep himself from running onto the field and joining in. Next year, mate…...Lachlan O'Connor used his speed to good effect, running in the wide open spaces and scoring lots of tries, as well as chasing down some fast runners to make important tags…... Charlie scored a couple of "forwards' tries", finding the gaps right at the edges of the defensive line when the defenders were off-side. Charlie also comes in for special acknowledgment for his great attitude and cooperative approach at training and on game day…….. Angus ran amok with his side-stepping and jinking runs. I soon gave up trying to follow Angus when he made a break; getting outrun by a 6 year old is just humiliating……… Will continued to develop his skills this year, building on his first year in U6s in 2011. Will's defensive positioning play in particular has come a long way. It will be good to see Will's brother Luke coming back from the dark side (soccer) next year too……. Ben is another speed merchant, who put his speed to great use scoring lots of tries, and importantly, setting up lots of tries by running into the gaps and the playing the ball quickly at the ruck…….. Christian provided rock solid defence, and was always looking to shut down opposition attacking raids. There are going to be some sorry kids next year when they decide to run at Christian. Scored some impressive short-range tries into the bargain as well…….Sam came across from soccer, and very quickly picked up the game. Special mention to Sam for being the player who was most consistently thinking about being in position in defence. Countless times, you could throw a blanket over the other 6 guys, and Sam would be in position, covering the rest of the defensive line. Well done, not to mention a heap of tries as well…….Mick managed to get dirty even when it was dry. In fact, Mick managed to get dirty even when he was not playing. But when Mick was playing, he was right in the thick of it, running quickly and straight, and making try-saving tags, and scoring lots too…… Ted scored lots of tries, had lots of long runs, and made the coach very proud.

Two big thank yous are due…..Firstly, to Janine and David who managed the team flawlessly and pro-actively. Janine's frantic SMS notifications on the night of last minute oval closure were particularly impressive and appreciated. David's planning and implementation of the "subbing spreadsheet" meant that the kids all got a fair go (well, to within 45 seconds or so, taken across the season).

Secondly, to the parent cohort as a whole. Your support and positivity not only made it all possible, but it made it a pleasure. It was a privilege to coach such a terrific group of kids; you should all be very proud.

U7Â STAGSÂ The 2012 U7s Lindfield Stags team comprised of all new recruits from as far north as Wahroonga all the way down the North Shore to Willoughby. We were informed that Lindfield was the club to join so ignored the recruiting efforts of local towns to gather at Tryon instead. Parents were all wonderfully enthusiastic supporters at games, and we even had our own minis-cheering squad in the way of 3-4 year old siblings, and lets not forget family puppies and devoted grandparents who travelled from afar to join us at times. It was tricky for Team Manager, Ann Sloan, to figure out whether Nicholas Johnstone or Nicholas Johnston was bringing oranges and snakes to the next game, but fortunately the mums were on the ball and sorted Ann out.

It has been exciting to see our boys develop the essential Minis skills, which were drilled into them by coaches and parents alike each week: "run FORWARD not backwards!"; "get back, get back and stay on-side!"; "pass the ball BACKWARDS not forwards!" and sometimes just simply, "PASS the ball!".

All parents are in agreement that this was quite a lot for a 6-7 year old to process all at once, but with the help of our fantastic coaches, Nilesh Nandan, Quinn Sloan and Doug Ferguson, and our resident home game referee, Gregory Burton, they all managed to "get it" by the end of the season if not well before. What a wonderful sight to see all these skills coming to together during the games!

Each team member made a unique contribution throughout the season and Coach Nilesh has summed them up very well for us as follows: 1. Oliver Burton: sadly missed for many games due to an injury, but he was always in the thick of it.

2. Oliver Ferguson: great skills and never seemed to drop a ball. Was off like a rocket every chance he could get.

3. Nicholas Johnstone: most enthusiastic at training and best runner up and down the hill for warm-ups.

4. Nicholas Johnston: best listener at training and most improved by the end of the season.

5. Jai Nandan: volunteered twice to help the other side field a team (thanks Dad!) but also threw an awesome inside pass to Oli Ferguson from the sidelines, allowing us to score the season's most fantastic try.

6. Patrick O'Mally: confidence grew in leaps and bounds over the season.

7. Fletcher Platt: wasn't afraid to get his hands (as well as jersey and shorts - sorry Mum!) dirty and naturally shared possession of the ball with his team mates from very early on.

8. Remy Sloan: most strategic U7 player.

9. Sam ten Pas: always a bundle of energy whose focus sharpened markedly as the season progressed.

10. Adam Watson: really enjoyed his rugby and proved most menacing to all opponents (and we have the photos to prove it).

We are most grateful to our team of coaches for their incredible dedication, never-ending enthusiasm and patience with our boys. The highlight each week at training was the boys vs dads game. The boys definitely had the dads longing to join the club as players themselves by the end of each training session! Thank you to all parents for their wonderful support of the club (always a great turn-out for volunteers whenever required) and of the team throughout the season. A special thanks to Hilary Lindgren for being our team photographer and capturing many memorable moments for us. A fabulous rookie season was had by all!

We started the year with a group of boys who mostly had no experience or knowledge of Rugby and boy did it show at the first training sessions and first 3 games of the Gala day on the 31st March. In our first game against Hornsby the boys only managed 15 tags collectively and we spent more time taking the ball backwards rather that heading forward to the try line. That morning we had another two games against Norths Gold and Lane Cove Blue and didn’t fair much better. After three games all the boys were exhausted along with the two coaches.

The Elks were very lucky to have such a fantastic manager in Natasha Rowe who worked tirelessly behind the seen to ensure everything came together at training and the games. We are also extremely lucky that Rob Hart volunteered his time as assistant coach. From all the boys and coach a very special thank-you to both of you.

Our group of young individuals has developed into an enthusiastic, well knit rugby team. The confidence of each and every one of the boys has developed and we now have a rugby team (the under 7 Elks) that is running forward, passing the ball and getting tries. At the end of the season the boys achieved 78 tags in one game, a far cry from the 15 in our first game.

Having a Kiwi as coach has meant that during the year we have combined both New Zealand Rugby Union and Australian Rugby Union training techniques to great avail. The boys enjoyed most of the NZ training games and methods we used wanting to repeat them time and time again. I think it was because they were doing something different to the other boys. After the results of the Wallabies first two games this season maybe the Elks success came from the NZ training methods!

All up the Lindfield under 7 Elks have put in a very solid performance for the year and they are all looking very forward to tackling next year. I have enjoyed coaching you in 2012 and I am extremely impressed by the progress you have all made. Thank you boys for making this such an enjoyable, fun and successful year.

U8 THISTLES Do not dwell on another year without the Bledisloe Cup, but take heart in the promise of a new dawn; the dawn of a day when players named Morten, Pemberton and Wang run straight in a ‘bullocking’ unapologetic manner. When backs called Wahby and van der Merwe reprise guile and speed not seen since Ella and Campese.

With 10 wins and 4 losses (I know, you’re not supposed to keep score), the Thistles were always competitive.

Starting the year with 5 straight wins, there was probably too much reliance on the prolific try scoring of the three musketeers; Matt Wahby, Roelf van der Merwe and Xavier Sengupta. Three consecutive losses against Mosman teams were hard to swallow but saw the team focus on the basics and improve our defence. Aggressive tackling by Jamie McPherson, Rowan Ferreira and Alec Carter set the platform in these games for the remainder of the season.

With a new direct style of play, the team recorded good wins against two Wahroonga teams with inspirational hard running from Mathew Wang and Zach Lucas. The silky passing and weaving runs of Rex Dennis featured in a rout of Norths before sweet revenge came against Mosman (14-3).

What started with a team of a few stars, ended with a star team, with all of the boys improving greatly over the season, particularly at the breakdown, which was turned from a weakness into a strength. Many thanks to the parents and particularly those dads who helped out at training. Finally, a huge thank you goes to our Team Manager, Anton Ferreira, who has been a tireless coordinator, photographer and coaching assistant.

U8 TARTANS The U8 Tartans is a true team & all of the kids really enjoyed their rugby this year. They won a few, lost a few, & showed a great team spirit at all times.

Head Coach Brant & Manager Jeff have put together some commentary about the squad.

In summary: Ruby, referred to as the 'secret weapon' by team mates, is an elusive speedy back with a hunger for running hard. She was always present in cover defence to make the all important try saving tackles.

Charlie is the Tartans 'demon tackler', with an equal ability to sniff out a turn over and make sniping runs, advancing his team on the field and the score board.

Alex is a block busting, straight running fearless forward with a left arm fend giving him the ability to beat the first man every time.

Nathan is a fleet footed back, with darting runs a feature of his game, who had a great season. He has an uncanny ability to score a try from the most difficult of situations.

Tasman is a tough bustling utility, who was ever present in the rucks. He possesses the ability to gain serious metres dashing wide down the flanks, which often resulted in points for the team.

Will is a light footed running back with a slick passing skills and an all round game, with great attitude to teamwork.

Oscar is a hard working utility with a penchant for doing what’s needed in the rucks and mauls and the ability to sniff out a turn over.

Hugo is hard running, tough utility with a high work rate and an elusive left foot step. He would be an asset to any team.

George is a busy utility back with the ability to seize an opportunity for a dashing run, a short offload and to help his team go forward.

Atticus, 'Mr Reliable', a hard running and courageous forward with a left and right fend and the ability to consistently pull off ball and all tackles on the opposition’s big men.

The parents played their part too, with occasional cover provided for Brant when required on Friday nights. A special thank you to the Heaven’s for hosting a great team dinner too.

It’s been a long season – 16 games plus tournaments – so maybe now the kids can spend some time enjoying the beach over summer & dreaming about another great season of rugby in 2013.

U8 STAGS The cheering in last few games of the season from the crowd and enthusiasm from the team summed up the development of the team over the year. By the last few games they were scoring trys after multiple passes and going to ground in the tackle for support players to take the ball forward. It was great to see everyone taking part and having fun.

The season started with half the team never having played before combined with a few old hands, Zac Steinwede and Aston Bloom, who played tackle the year before. Zac and Aston took on the responsibility of being the rock of the team in defence and attack, and in doing so earned their awards as best forward and best back this year.

Jonno Fourie was a natural ball runner, but it was his defence at the end of the season that stole the show. He started slowly but after a focussed training session became a tackling demon.

Who could forget Hugo Catterall’s try saving tackle where he stopped a player centimetres before the line or his try when he carried both teams in a maul over the line to score.

Henry Taylor showed a strong sense of positioning and pulled off one especially memorable tackle where he downed the biggest guy on the field in a copybook tackle.

As the smallest guy on the field Jack Gordon never ceased to amaze with his fearless tackling, jinking running or burrowing into the middle of a maul to then emerge with the ball.

Nick Fazi and James Hitchcock were the big men and enforcers in the team. Providing the shove in the rucks and mauls and making bullocking runs wading through the opposition.

Saxon Glendinning was the quiet unassuming type, until he was passed the ball or placed an opponent in his sights, scampering past or pulling off copybook tackles.

Eddie Timpson was a hard fast runner, strong mauler and put fierce tackler - like in the last game where he came from the other side of the field in a missile like cover defence tackle.

A big thanks to all the parents who cheered so loudly and positively all season, and always had a word of encouragement after the game. Special thanks to Duncan Glendinning who co-coached, and Lehman Bloom who ran the subs for games and all the other dads who helped out – it makes such a difference as coach to have this help. And training would not be the same without the Mums supporting training with their wine and cheese.

U8 BUCKS With the boys being introduced to tackling for the first time the 2012 season was always going to be an interesting one for the Bucks. It seems that the scouts had a very active off season and the new recruits especially from Holy family were plentiful. The stalwart from last year’s Bucks were quick to welcome the new comers and our season opener was a great success with most of the lad crossing the line. It was clear from the early performance however that coaches Hutton and Foster were going to need to focus on the tackling aspect of the game as the initial performance with a few exceptions was more a display of the boys best impressions of a turnstile.

Backing up from the under 7s and the Lindfield primary contingent were Josh Hughes, Alex Honey, Ned Ritchens and Zack Palfreyman. Alex for one kicked his season off with vigour by scoring an early try, however his season was cut short by an off field incident on holidays. The other Lindfield representatives performed admirably with both Josh Hughes and Zack Palfreyman revelling in the harder contact game that comes with tackle and really making use of their strength and size both with some barnstorming runs through the centre leaving many an opposition player in their wake. They matched this strength with the ability to turn the ball around in attack as well as regularly stealing it in defence. “Deadly Nedley” Ritchens was at his best, although reluctant to pass the ball, when it was in hand his pace and slight footedness saw him cross the line many times and towards the latter part of the season his cover defence was brutal. The Holly family recruits were admirably lead by Hugo Foster who again employed his height and reach to great effect and was always keen on the face palm. Of the new recruits both Isaac Bissell and Archie Jackson began the season seemingly unaware of the fact they were in possession of two formidable rugby attributes; size and weight, once both the lads worked out that not only were they virtually impossible to stop with a full head of steam the try line became their friend. Peter Spring and Ed Carmody rounded out the five and whilst not as tall as the other three these two certainly made up more than the difference with heart. Without doubt Ed’s length of the field carve up down at the hideously expensive Balmoral oval was the Buck’s try of the season and one that is still being recounted around Tryon Oval. Peter Spring also became familiar with the try line and was not only one of our more prolific scorers but also one of our best tacklers understanding very early on the its difficult to run without legs. The last two players in the squad, Joe Hutton and Bailey Robertson, were also regular scorers and reliable defenders and not afraid of some hard rugby. Joe picked up the concept of knocking the opposition over, jumping to his feet and stripping the ball early on in the season and was able to make great use of this method to keep the bucks scoreline moving. Bailey’s strength was definitely in his all-round ability to both pilfer the ball and step off both feet which regularly confused many an opposition player.

Most importantly the boys consistently played as a team and only when the oppositions coach placed his son as a referee did we hear any murmurs of dissent. So thanks to our manager Jason Hughes and all our parents for regularly coming to some bitterly cold trainings and early mornings and heres to a bigger 2013 and the start of under 9s.

U8 ELKS The 2012 U8 Elks moulded a team together out of boys from different schools and non-rugby backgrounds. The challenge for the coaches (Andrew and Paul) was made so much easier by the brilliant Manager skills of Lucy Basten as well as generous support from parents. There were many great Elk moments this year, one worth mentioning here. The last game of the year was against a big St Ives team coached by their South African mentor. The Elks were more than ‘up’ for the game and displayed incredible commitment at the tackle, as well as great driving and cleaning out. The Elks piled on 8 tries to 3. Coaches Paul and Andrew thought the crowning glory was the 7 phase play that led to the final try on the final whistle. A fantastic team effort that showed enormous potential for their future rugby careers.

Joe Harrison – Joe’s fast angled runs caused lots of headaches for opponents over the year. He worked hard on his tackling and stopped certain tries in the closing games of the year. Well done Joe! Xavier Cuddy – Xave has a sneaky passion for the odd ‘dummy-pass’ and run attacks. His ruck and maul work improved over the year.

Undoubtedly destined for the forwards with a roaming brief. Go Xave!

Oscar Smith – Oscar has a natural talent for darting runs and low driving hits which shocked many Elk opponents. His yellow and black headgear often resembled a missile on legs. Congratulations Oscar!

Oliver Ruepert – Oliver was the surprise package this year. He grew into a ripping and attacking machine, scoring a triple header against Mosman. A future lock forward with a big rugby future! Oli Oli Oli! Tom Powell – ‘Terminator’ Tommy was a standout forward this year. His aggressive ball running and terrifying cover tackling would have made Willie Ofahengaue proud. This man has a big rugby future!

Will Englund – Big Will’s confidence grew steadily over his first year of rugby. He is mastering the art of the ‘rip and recycle’ ball to his team mates, while also making many excellent runs. Great stuff Will!

Henry Palmer – Henry’s confidence and aggression grew steadily over the year. He was not afraid to take on bigger opponents or lead rush defences to shut down any threats. A great season Henry!

Tom O’Meara - ‘Chariots’ O’Meara motored away for tries using his piston legs to beat many opponents. He also saved many tries with his cover tackling. Well done Tom! Josh Hassall – Josh ‘The Ripper’ played his first year of rugby and blew many opponents away with his awesome ripping and stepping runs.

Josh will make a brilliant flanker in future years. One tough guy!

Henry Basten – The ’Raging Bull’ plays a low hard penetrating forward game that would impress hardened front rowers at any level. He can sniff a try from anywhere and cut down any attacks. Go hard HB! Cheers, Paul & Andrew

U9 BUCKS

Great season for the u9 bucks as they finished season with just the one defeat. All the boys approached the game with great attitude and really enjoyed the better standard of rugby that was played. As forwards began too understand the clean out rules that will be with them forever the structure improved. At the same time backs understanding it cant all be done on their own is a good lesson and team play ruled with tries shared around. Rugby truly is a team game and everyone contributed throughout the season.

Bondy & Steve were pleased to sit and watch from the sidelines and the boys adapted quite quickly to not having us on the field and were able to play with structure....forwards cleaning out and back passing through the hands. One on the most please aspects was they played as a team, encouraged each other and had fun..

-Dommies bone crushing tackles with the yellow headgear !

-Tommie Chapman diving for the corner , again and again -Gabriel and Sam Giffen on barnstorming runs breaking down defences -James Powell and Xavier Houston linking up for backs tries ( not piggies ), Xavier timing than run to perfection ( was the pass forward?)

-Flynn the pocket rocket sniping around the fringes and Max the winger the fend -James Hayes cleaning out as the unsung hero, head buried in the ruck .

-Tom Osullivan vice like grip in the centres and on the wing -Connor Bond speed up the middle , on the wing and ensuring when he tackles a Mosman player on the touchline , they stayed tackled.

-Oskar Ott’s first try – he was surprised, pleased and proud all in one and his field long chase to save a try with a tough tackle Great refereeing from Damien, Space, Powelly and Rob Scotty C great mgr as usual and Bondy a supreme 2IC. Thks also to Space , Damien,Josh and Powelly for coaching help when I was late ! ( often ) All in all its been a real pleasure to coach the Bucks , a great vintage and look forward to watching their development in future years ,

U9 ELKS The Elks this year were a combination of boys that had played together previously, and some new faces. They were all wonderful boys, who most importantly loved playing for each other, and loved playing rugby.

Ben ( David Pocock) Payne: Australia’s future open side flanker in the making. Fearless, driven and non stop. A great team player, never stopped trying.

Mackenzie (James Horwill) Thopmson: Hard as nails, non stop competitor. Great ball runner, leaving defenders scattered on the ground. Fearless defender, and scored some great tries.

Jesse (Tatafu Polota Nau) Oastler: New to the Elks this year. Big and strong, loved the tough stuff in the middle. Scored a brilliant solo try later in the season, and will continue to cause the opposition many problems.

Lauchlan (Benn Robinson) Kiely: With the Irish blood pumping through his veins, Lauchlan was a menacing prescence on the footy field.

Unstoppable with ball in hand, the future of Australian (or Irish) scrummaging is in good hands.

Paddy ( Scott Higginbotham) Johnston: What a find for the Elks. A seriously good rugby player, who could play forwards or backs. Tackled like a demon, ran straight, and never gave up, Paddy has a great future.

Jack ( Phil Waugh) Muffet: We barely ever saw Jack, because he was always stuck in the middle of the mauls. Loved the hard stuff…never shirked. A great team player.

Lewis (Will Genia) Hartley: A cracking scrum half, whose sniping runs earned him many tries. Great passer of the ball from both sides, and is already running the team plays.

Charlie (Brett Papworth) Sharp: The best sidestep in the game. Had an eye 3 plays forward and reads the game really well. Great head on defender..

Max (Sonny Bill Williams) Purcell: Big, fast and strong. Scored many tries that shouldn’t have been scored. A great tackler, who rarely missed.

Has nice hands that well see him develop into a great inside centre.

Ryan (Adam Ashley Cooper) Thomas: A scintillating runner, who left defenders in his wake. Big and strong, he combined well with his outside backs that led to many tries.

Felix (Digby Ioane) Harding: A great runner, who could sense where the try line was. Had no fear taking the ball up. Scored some great trys, and would always support his mates.

Will (Usain Bolt) Harding: The flash! Give him the ball and he was gone! Tackled and mauled well also, he is a great rugby player already.

Many thanks to Guy (super coach) and Andrew ( loves it) for all their work with the boys over the year. It takes a lot of work and patience, and we as parents all appreciate it.

U9 STAGS As another season of rugby draws to a close it will be difficult to tell what the boys will miss most; the great camaraderie they shared with their mates each week or the lollies at the end of each game! Some have speculated that if the football were made of lollies it might get more attention during the game but I’m sure the great teamwork the boys showed this year would have suffered as a result.

The core of the Stags from last year were back showing their love of the game and were ready to build on the great foundation set by Mark Johns last year. The returning Stags were joined by several new recruits including James, Samuel, Thiran, Christian and a late season bolter Carlton. The newbies settled in extremely well and almost immediately they looked like they had been part of the team from the very beginning.

It was a big step this year from learning the basics of the tackle and rucks and mauls in U8’s to the full on contest for the ball, particularly as they had to do it all themselves without a coach on the field to provide them with direction. The boys responded with much enthusiasm and while results may not have always gone our way they backed up each week with a spring in their step and a smile on their faces to give it a go.

From the early season mud bath of Tryon Rd to the late season dust bowl of Balmoral, the boys took the hits that came their way and gave back some of their own. This season the boys grew into their roles as either “piggies” or “princesses” and sometimes even a mixture of both. The forwards were led by the strong running and hunger for the ball of Nathan and Cameron who were ably assisted in the rucking and mauling stakes by the driving force of Christian, James and Max. Our part time forward Lachie was a big improver with his deceptive ball running a feature late in the season.

The backs were directed around the park by the boy built to be halfback – Hugo. In his last season for the Stags before leaving for overseas the little maestro continued to impress with his cunning and ability to exploit the smallest of gaps to find his way to the line. Henry and Josh cemented a good inside back pairing during the season in both attack and defence with Henry ending the season as the Stags leading try scorer. The outside backs of Harrison, Thiran, Samuel and Carlton made the most of the opportunities presented with some outstanding breaks down the side lines and some last ditch try saving tackles.

Finally, thanks to all the Stag parents especially the head coach Kendall (together with his many assistants Jack, Tim, Stephen and Mark) and big thanks to our Manager Katrina. It was great to see such great support from all the parents on the sidelines at every match and even staying back long after training had finished on Friday nights to make sure the boys got the most out of it.

The friendship around the Stags team has been exceptional as always and I look forward to seeing you all again for another great season in 2013.

U9 THISTLES The mighty Thistles started the year in style with five strong performances yielding convincing victories against quite competent sides. We narrowly lost two games, one to a strong Norths team (our boys were recovering from sleepover parties), and the other to a well-trained, very competitive Chatswood side. The boys continued to improve throughout the season thanks to the expert guidance from our coaches, Gerard Finegan and Hugh Gallagher. There were a mixture of new and experienced players making the coaches’ work all the more demanding (not to mention the odd behavioural lapses at training). Fortunately, the coaches often had great support from dads, especially Drew Hall and James Yaffa. In the second half of the season, there were definite advances in work at the breakdown and in defence. Most games were won through a combination of flair, determination, brute force and luck.

Individually, each boy should be commended by their attitude, sportsmanship and fairness on and off the field.

Fortunately, the coaches often had great support from dads, Forwards: George Daley continued to play with dogged determination on the field, having some excellent runs and tackling with great effect towards the end of the season.

Tobey Finegan covered the most territory in each game, by fiercely contesting the rucks and malls then taking off and scoring several tries every game. Zac Hall was close to player of the match on numerous occasions with a dominant display in the forward pack. As the teams top tackler, he would terrorise the opposition when they had the ball often turning defence into attack. Hamish Hunter blasted into the team this year and quickly became the go-to ball carrier for penalties and restarts. He managed to score or nearly score on several occasions by running through (or over) most of the opposing defenders. Bill Parker joined the team towards the end of the season and contributed strongly with incisive running and tackling. Lachie Walker specialised in cleaning out, running with a mighty fend and setting up a number of tries. Backs: Nicholas Dring played mainly in the outside backs and displayed great determination in his first year of rugby. Harry Farrington was a very talented player who demonstrated exceptional skills throughout the season. He was a punishing defender and a consistent try scorer. Archie Gallagher also had an outstanding season, not only as an incisive ball carrier but also controlled the back line from his position at fly-half.

Shingo Harada was new to rugby and Australia so had the steepest learning curve. He had a memorable season on the wing having learnt very quickly the fundamentals of running rugby and became a fearless tackler. Bailey Stevens was also new to rugby this year and was certainly one of the most improved players. He used his speed in and around the breakdown to create opportunities for other backs and scored a number of tries. Ned Waddington cemented his place in the centres with many penetrating runs and an ability to recycle or offload to keep the ball alive. Dougall Yaffa played in the outside backs and once again proved to be a fearless runner and tackler. He continued to display the qualities that made him a trophy winner last year. Finally, thanks to all the parents who helped make this such an enjoyable and successful season.

U9 TARTANS Played 15 - Won 14 - Lost 1. Had much to learn about driving over/clean out, ball security, phases and attacking lines. Stepped up with no coach on field, can be proud of their play as a team and looked like a team. A great group of boys to be involved with. Good luck next season and in the future.

Gunnsy - Asleep some of the time but when he was AWAKE had some great game time. Future star in the forwards, who runs well with ball in hands.

Tobey - Opposition had trouble stopping him all season and drove to the line on numerous occasions for tries. Welcome addition to any team.

Gregor - Switched on part way through the year after letting 2 easy tries in against Mosman (coach had a quiet word!) and transformed into a try scoring, tough tackling, key forward.

Taine – Consistently ran in 1 or 2 early second half tries. Another sleepy head forward, with potential to cause problems with his strong (not sideways) running.

Kian - Rookie year. A tough little nugget who became another key 'pack' member. Could be good next year if gets on the ball more?

Hamish – Another rookie learning new skills who improved mid-season after taking out MoM in one home game. Smiled and had fun.

Isaac - Powered through the season after slow start. Fantastic energy, always involved, scored tries and will be all over opposition next year.

Oscar – Versatile and able as forward or a great ball player at HB. Some ‘sneaky' tries and low tackling. Future leader?

Quinny – Recruited from NZ recruit. Consistently good, stripping the ball in the pack and ran strongly when free. Plays with the right spirit and took player of tournament at Gordon Gala.

Pozze - Always involved when leading the forward line early season and played well in the backs too. Welcome addition to any team.

Jay – Winger who flew to the line but will go faster if he stops looking behind him! Great passing and hung on tight in defence on occasions.

Slippy – Or sleepy? Tackled like no other and scared the opposition into dropping ball. Some crazy hits and tackles made and worked hard for the team.

Henry - Great all round game, some flying tries and the teams go to person for try saving cover tackles. Took out the sprint trophy at Harbord Gala.

U10Â HIGHLANDERSÂ After an extended pre-season trial period, Coaches Brant James and Peter Lloyd were presented with a collection of skilled young individuals graduating from each of the Lindfield Under 9 teams, all ready to be moulded into a well-drilled team. Brant and Pete quickly established the optimum positions for the team members, enabling a well settled group with each player ready to develop in his allocated role.

The Highlanders successful early season in the preliminary competition saw the boys promoted after an undefeated run, including a convincing win against a highly regarded Hillview. The team soon realised that they had plenty of work to do after the Highlanders were given a torrid welcome to the U10C competition in game 5 by the eventual minor premiers, Hunters Hill. The next game against Seaforth saw a second loss but with only a small deficit, convincing Brant and Pete that their considerable efforts were having effect.

Four convincing wins followed, with an aggregate 121-17 for and against but the run came to a halt with a game 12 rematch against Hunters Hill.

Boronia Park witnessed a hard fought game in which the boys demonstrated their commitment under great pressure. Wins in the final two competition games against Easts McAuley and Seaforth saw the Highlanders finish third on the ladder, earning a quarter final game against Seaforth.

What should have been a tremendous end-of-season clash was marred by Seaforth's questionable tactics leading to the Highlanders advancing to the semi-final to play for the first time against Narrabeen. The boys played well in what was to be their final game for the season against a very strong Narrabeen team that went on to win the final against Hunters Hill.

The size and strength of the Highlanders' forward pack provided the team dominance in set plays throughout the season, challenged only in scrums by the eventual grand final winners, Narrabeen. Each game saw improvement in the forwards' commitment at the breakdown, ensuring that by the latter part of the season, the Highlanders' backline was able to employ its speed and strength against the competition's stronger teams with increasing effect.

Under Brant and Pete's guidance, the team's defensive skills continued to grow through the season.

The forwards, composed of Henry Pringle, Ryan Jenkins, Hugo Thomas, Lucas Perrignon, Joe Giffin, Ethan Holt, Max Lloyd and Tom Sheridan, demonstrated strength and aggression in both attack and defence with a dominant scrum, great line breaking abilities, continuous collective support of the ball runner and a progressive improvement throughout the season in commanding broken play. Henry's goal kicking ability also served to ensure the Highlanders benefited most from their well earned tries.

The Highlanders halves - Angus James and Harry Curtin - created many opportunities with their selfless distribution of clean ball to the outside backs mixed with selective penetrating runs, mesmerising sidesteps and ruthless defence. The strong running centres - Finn Scott, Eddie Bell and Vlad Rudenko - subscribed to the "crash through or crash" philosophy and their aggressive approach to attack and defence saw them generally crash through and the opposition crash. The Highlanders wings - Logan Kaye, Dan Nicholas, Liam Stack and Michael Newbrun provided committed ball running, blistering pace and unwavering defence and when they backed themselves, successfully delivered tries for and stopped tries against.

Finally, the unreserved participation and assistance of the Highlander parents throughout the season in carrying out necessary activities such as running sidelines, acting as ground marshals, dressing fields and drafting match reports was greatly appreciated by the boys, coaches and manager and contributed greatly to a great camaraderie amongst the parents and boys.

U10 STAGS The U10 Stags brought together a terrific team of boys, some of whom had never played rugby. Early pre-season form was, as might be expected, a little patchy. However under the expert eye of Head Coach Guy Morgan and Assistant Coach Matt McLellan, it wasn’t long before the mighty Stags were firing as a unit.

The boys took their A game into the season proper and won their first 3 games, before narrowly going down in the fourth. This form was enough to win us promotion up to the next grade, where the going was just that little bit tougher.

After a narrow first up loss to a very strong Lane Cove team, the boys re-grouped to string together back-to-back wins, including one of the better performances of the year against a much-fancied Harbord team.

This early season form was all the more impressive when the impact of injuries and the international transfer market are considered. Ethan Burgess succumbed to a season ending broken arm, while our promising prop Finn Cameron accepted a lucrative offer overseas and moved with his family to the Netherlands.

Notwithstanding these setbacks, our boys continued to gel as a team. With the instructions of Coach Morgan ringing in their ears, our forwards really lifted their intensity and aggression at the breakdown, led ably by forwards captain Alec Paterson. At the same time the ball started to get out along the backline much more often and here our captain and halfback Alexander DeLaine led by example, setting up and scoring many tries himself.

The Stags finished the season with a 7:6 win/ratio which was enough to get us into the play-offs for the Plate. The semifinal saw an impressive 43-14 defeat of North Rocks which put us into the Plate Grand Final against Lane Cove, a team which had recorded wins against us in our two previous meetings. Unfortunately the weight of history proved too much for our boys, going down valiantly despite scoring the first and last two tries of the game.

After a season of such disappointment from the Waratahs, it was great to watch the Stags go around, playing rugby the way it was intended, giving it their all and really enjoying themselves. A big thanks to Guy and Matt - the incredible development in skill level and teamwork during the season is a credit to their efforts with the boys. Also a big thank you to our parents and particularly for helping out on those cold early morning set up duties at Koola!

U10 BUCKS

There is a significant step up on a boy’s progression in the world of rugby when they move from playing U9 competitions to the faster, more skilled world of the Under 10’s graded games. Following several weeks of selections, the Bucks were formed from a combination of players from prior years plus several who were new to the code. Almost immediately a team dynamic emerged that would become the mainstay for the season. It was a pleasure to watch as the lads excelled in their skill levels, not just for their allocated positions but also along the dynamics of team play - an essential element to rugby - simple to say but a difficult lesson to impart and to their credit, the Bucks embraced the concept and were better players for it.

Our ever patient and committed coaches, Thackers and Middo together with their helpers Pete and George set about building the skills that would serve the players well over the season. Contested scrums, lineouts, clean outs, rucks, mauls and conversions meant plenty of structured training. To this end Thackers excelled with loads of fun but instructive sessions - including tapping into the club’s well qualified specialised forwards and back’s coaches for that “extra” level of instruction. Notable mention also for his use of email correspondence – the oh so numerous weekly transcripts designed to encourage the parents (and maybe the boys?!). The team itself requires mention: Luca, new to rugby and ended up the “Wrecking Ball” for his brutal defence. A super enthusiast.

Jeremy, “Captain Courageous” led his side to results not thought possible earlier in the season.

Mark, reknowned for his “Slippery” side step and dogged defence, a terrific season.

Lachie D, a broken nose couldn’t stop “Snorkel” from finishing the season with incredible flair and commitment, a gifted front rower.

Harry, “The Sniper” who would appear from nowhere with cover defence the Wallabies could do with plus a laser guided boot.

Lachie H, an extradordinary rugby player’s player, new to the game, who excelled.

Will, “Chief” Hofman showed us exactly what makes a great rugby player. Determination and team spirit.

Ed, “Brickbreaker,” fantastic at breaking the line and making for the chalk. Massive improvement in tackling.

Finn, “Mr Enthusiasm” always prepared to go the extra metre for his team mates.

Nic, “The Howitzer” ploughed through mauls like a 40mm cannon ball.

Ollie, “Magic Man” you think he’s there but no he’s over there, Magic Man is a natural rugby talent.

Sam, “The General” is a game changer with the makings of a great flanker in a couple of year’s time Nick, “Daddy Long Legs” fought for his team all season and was a positive force for everyone.

Marcus, “Sure Thing” a coach’s delight. Listened & actioned every word spoken for the good of his mates.

Zac, “Cannon” a hard working, tough centre with speed and impressive defensive capabilities. The complete package.

Tim, “No prisoners” finished the season in a blaze giving 100% in every game to get the team over the line.

Flynn, “Lightning” a strong runner of the ball whose defensive capabilities grew enormously.

I would like to make a special mention to our coaches Simon Thackray and Mark Middleton for their total dedication to the team.

The Bucks success and development may be largely attributed to their training skills and I have no doubt will remain with the boys their entire rugby career. A special thanks also to our touch judges Tim, Dave and Steve, our coaching helpers Pete, George and Luke Thackray plus of course our tireless setup/BBQ helpers (too many to mention).

Finally a big thank you to the mums, dads and grandparents for without your help the team would not function at all!

U10 TARTANS The U10 Lindfield Tartans teams finished 5th in the regular season. This is a credible performance considering the high standard of the A grade Sydney competition. A number of close losses against higher placed teams (Manly, Wahroonga, Hunters Hill) could have seen a more favourable win-loss ratio more befitting the team’s improvement throughout the season.

The team played in the Plate finals, comfortably disposing of Newport (17-0) in the semi-final and Chatswood ( 14 - 0) in the final.

The Plate final win is a credit to the team, recognising their continued improvement as players and general passion for the game.

A number of players initially struggled with the change in game structure, following the free reign applied to individuals in previous seasons.

At the half-way mark, all games were competitive with just two blow-out games (against the undefeated Harbord and Manly (effective representative) teams). The second round of competition saw some team positional changes, continued focus on the core skills surrounding passing, clean-out at the breakdown and most pleasingly, greater contribution from the entire squad. All games were close with some great wins against lower ranked teams (Chatswood, Mosman and Newport, in particular) Whilst some may be pre-occupied with the final place settings, we would consider this to have been a successful season. This is given the passion of play displayed, the development and growth in skills across all players, the greater understanding of a team oriented approach and general team mentality. A number of team players were rewarded with selection in the Gordon U10 development squad. Further and arguably unique to Lindfield Junior Rugby, a number of players billeted and played with / against the touring Kawanashi Japanese Rugby team – a tremendous experience for all concerned, both on and off the field.

Congratulations to the team’s Best and fairest (based on a 3-2-1) throughout the regular season, Tom Hannell (Forward) and Justus Stals (Back); Most improved: was Declan Glendenning and followed closely by Patrick Tomes. Captains: Andrew Spring (Forwards) and Luke Harrison (Back).

U11 HIGHLANDERS Close But No Cigar…...

This year the bulk of 2011 grand finalists from the C competition backed up for another season which was great to see. The ranks were also bolstered by the addition to the team of Big Ben & Macca from the Tartans, Gus from the Bucks, Chazza playing a second year in the u11’s, plus Ed who had just moved into area.

At the outset, the success of the 2011 Highlanders provided an opportunity for the 2012 Highlanders to play in the B grade completion, rather than maintain a dominant status in the C Grade. What would be best – a challenge in a competitive competition or success in a weaker competition?

From the early training sessions it seemed that this team could be capable of great things, as the positional changes forced by changing body shapes and the inclusion of new plays all fell neatly into place. So, after a brief discussion, the decision was made to take on the B Grade in the interest of presenting a greater challenge to a team that had spent their fair share of “time in the sun” during the previous season. We would be playing the A teams from the other clubs in the competition, but a challenge is what brings out the best in players.

The 84-0 result in favour of the Highlanders in round one of the season indicated that we had got it right. This was reinforced when after 4 games the Highlanders were still undefeated, sitting in second place prior to the mid season regrading.

The mid-season shuffling of teams did not favour the Highlanders as it saw the loss of a significant accumulation of points as teams that had been comprehensively beaten were demoted. Furthermore, the Highlanders were coupled with a daunting run of games which only featured clubs in the top half of the table. A string of narrow defeats saw the Highlanders’ chances of playing in the Cup finals wither away until our fate was sealed with a final round loss to Beecroft.

It should be noted though that there should no disappointment from the Highlanders in finishing mid-table in a very competitive B Grade competition, where every other team we played against this season was the best side that that opposing club could field, often containing a number of representative players. These ‘superstars’ were often the difference in the tight struggles, with 5 games being decided by less than one try.

As coach, the highlights of the year were: The Highlanders pushing Narrabeen, who finished the season unbeaten minor premiers and eventual champions, to near defeat. Narrabeen protected a 2 point margin for most of the second half which was truly amazing when we were 14-0 down after 2 mins.

The Highlander’s two games against Norths, who were our nemesis last season and finished this season in second place. Despite Norths winning on both occasions, the average margin over the two games was less than a converted try and the games were played in great competitive spirit.

The overall competitiveness of the B Grade competition throughout the season was more rewarding than an unbalanced competition. Every week the Highlanders played a game where either side was capable of winning and the eventual result was often decided by a brief lapse in concentration or a bounce of the ball.

In danger of overstating the obvious, consistency is the name of the game. The ability to consistently play in the same way, irrespective of what is opposing you, is a sure recipe for success. There were two defining games this season which prevented the Highlanders challenging for the Cup. The Highlanders left their structured game at home, which firstly resulted in a draw with Bays and then the loss to Beecroft, which were teams that finished sixth and seventh respectively at the close of the regular season.

2013 will be a new challenge for the Highlanders with the introduction of 15 man rugby. After a few years together, the core of Highlanders may have played their last game together. Best wishes and congratulations to all the boys for their efforts and success over that time.

U11 STAGS The U11 Stags had another fantastic year of footy, culminating in a great win in the Plate Cup final, but more about that later.

Our focus for the year was on a few simple things; tackling, running straight, protecting the ball at the breakdown and passing. All boys in the team improved their skills in these key areas during the year.

Reflecting back on the season each boy made great contributions to the team in their own ways. Angus Strong demonstrated the benefits of running straight and nailed some fantastic tackles. Lachie Kee and James Phillips won the team lots of ball by either ripping it out of arms or holding up the maul. Charlies Timpson and Sengupta both started to enjoy the benefits of tackling low, as well as darting runs close to the breakdown.

Max Lillyman entertained us with gutsy running coupled with his now famous Goose Step. Harry Quinn saved a number of certain trys against us with his great speed and his ability to jump onto the back of the ball carrier in mid flight. Hamish McEwan and Nick Davies worked hard in the forwards and were versatile in a number of positions.

Nik Desmet doubled up as a front rower and an ever improving ball runner, famously catching the ball from a kick off against Easts and making a solid 30 metres of ground before they could tackle him. Andrew Himmelhoch and Ed Browne got through a mountain of tackling and hard ball running. Finally Sean Doerner and James Ormiston showed people how to pass and run, both developing tackling skills during the season.

Apart from the Rugby, off the field the team had a great season with pizzas and drinks after Friday night games, BBQ’s, a lovely lunch at the Newport Arms and finally a lamb on a spit at our end of season team function. We enjoyed ourselves in a Rugby sort of a way.

Our last game of the season was the Plate Cup Final. We started the game with 11 players, 3 down due to requests to play one of our team up, one injured and one NSW Skiiing championships. The boys played out of their skins, keeping the ball away from Lane Cove for a large part of the first half, tiring the opposition by making them defend and running at them hard. We won the game 17-12 with one player down. Sadly the SJRU rule book states that we had to forfeit the game. But the scoreboard never lies. It was the best way to finish the season, on a real high.

Congratulations to the boys for another great season of Rugby, played in fantastic spirit and doing the very best that they can.

U11 BUCKS Switch to slow motion. Silence.

The camera zooms from afar to the pitch and the Bucks team. Tom Paterson slowly lifts his chin to sear the opposition players, their supporters, and anyone else he loathes, with one stare. Conrad Seaburn focuses on the first of his targets, running a lethal tackle through his mind. Will Cant smiles, the opposition quivers, the first aid attendants pick up their bags. Tom kicks off high and short. Ball lingers in the air forever then lands on the ten metre line.

Switch to fast motion. Noise of 120,000 spectators.

One bounce. The ball leaps into the hands of a flying James Gosper who evades four defenders to score. That’s normal isn’t it?

Five seconds in and another victory in sight.

Switch to normal motion. Desperate cries from the opposition coach.

Henry Wines deliberately grounds the kicking tee and steps back. Time stops. The ball sails over the posts again from 70 metres (or so) out.

Restart. Billy McGuirk and the ball come together in one smooth flow. Step once, step twice, he slips the ball to his support. Class act. Jack Elster powers up the mid field, defence lying behind him. Then he’s down. Henry Bolt rolls over the top, picks up the pill, and like a locomotive, rolls ten metres on with four opposition passengers.

First ruck. Josh Cuddy spears in. No competition. He casts three defenders aside, one hand lifts the ball and he’s off. Five, ten, fifteen metres made. The defence rallies at last, five players finally slow him. Ruck. Turnover. The opposition gains ground.

Unacceptable! Josh Christy punishes. He stops their runner dead, throws him back, collects the ball and fires it back, all in one impossible move. Will Cant receives, drops two defenders then flicks to Benji Schwartz. Defenders relax - he’s only a prop.

Mistake. Benji’s your worst nightmare - a centre in disguise: solid, fast, lethal.

Missile pass to Jasper Hudson who’s read the play and prep’d his backs. He kicks long into space. Daniel “Road Runner” Sims is there to collect on the bounce. Tackled, but we possess. Lachlan Madden, in position as always, defends the ball. Hamish Spalding collects, gets up to speed and bowls over two opponents. Lachlan springs to support and receives, looking for his support. Last slip pass to Daniel who shoots over the line for another try.

Thirty-five minutes to go.

Their coach sighs. Competition to coach this crew next year will be tough.

U11Â TARTANSÂ After going through 2011 undefeated only to lose the Grand Final, the 2012 Tartans were determined to go one step further. This year we were joined by a few new boys that made the squad even more stronger than 2011. The year started in great style winning our first four games including a 26-0 Victory over arch rivals Harbord in round four. After regrading, Seaforth undefeated in the B competition were promoted.

Our talented back line with Lachlan Albert at half directing traffic, bullet like passes and kicking prowess always evident. Sean Grace the star 5/8 in the Competition with his great tacking, deft step and precision passing was always dangerous and opposition tactics were always directed at him.

The Centre combinations of Ben Pollack with his iron clad defence, experience for the game and general play along with AJ Woulf with his fierce bull like running and Lachlan Saar whose improvement during the season has resulting in him achieving the Most Improved Award for the year.

Our Wingers, Oliver Griffths the most gifted in the competition with his flying runs, kick and chase, goal kicking has resulted in him receiving the 2012 Best and Fairest award. Phillip Wright with his lightening speed and straight running and Sam Rechner with his chasing, running and wonderful defence, were always a handful for any team.

This year our front row combination of Hugo Perrignon our fiery hooker with the book ends of Louis Pratt and Finn Spalding with there never say die attitude and our utility forward, Jack Pringle who could fill any holes in our armour and later in the season, Lee Tanoi with his strong running and size made our tight five, a well oiled machine.

In the second row we had Sebastian Christie whose defence and strength were evident from the start. He improved with every game, saving his best game for the Qualifying Final. His partner in the pack was Archie Woodhill our star line out jumper always winning the ball, his flying runs and try scoring ability. At Number 8 we had Angus Houston with his uncompromising defence, his tackling was the best in the team. Charlie Crawshaw was our man able to play anywhere in the pack and sometimes even in the centres, a real asset to the team.

We finished the regular season with 12 Wins and one defeat against Harbord. In our semi played at home at Koola Park, Harbord came out firing scoring 3 tries running with a strong wind in the first half. Our boys never gave up, scoring in the second half but unable to bridge the gap, losing 19-7. The following week we played Seaforth in the qualifying final only to go down 14-5 in a very closely fought match. Our season was over.

On a positive note, Sean, Lachlan Albert, Archie, Angus, Philip, Hugo & Oliver all represented Gordon at the State Championships.

The boys have become a very close team, they have bonded very well and have made great friendships over the 2 years together. Next year the game goes to 15 a side, I'm sure our boys will be back again and determined to challenge again in a very competitive A Competition. A big thank you to Bruce, Rau, Michael & Tarmo who gave so much of their time to coach the boys.

A special mention of Suz Spalding who did a wonderful job managing the team while juggling her many commitments.

U12 HIGHLANDERS This year we decided to run 3 teams in our grade. This meant teams would be running thin and boys would get to play in several sides over the year. Thankfully Mitch and Harry and James were willing to help out when possible and Tyler could cover Prop, Hooker and Flanker. With Tommy, Joey and Josh up front we had a solid platform to start building on. Having Peter and Josh in the second row meant most of the line out ball and several tight heads were coming our way. Having Ed helping out the Tartans for a month meant others got a chance as loose forwards.

The one that stood up the most was Sam who applied himself and improved so much that he became our most reliable forward over the year. Tai, Jake, and James covered our back row until Ed’s return. With Ed’s return we really started winning more breakdown ball and denying other sides any ball. Alex picked up our game plan very quickly and with Jack making the calls we got front foot ball to Mat who opened up defences and put our speed guys Ben, Riley, Declan and Anthony away. Nim was there for drawing the defence, making the covering tackles and backing up our backs when they broke the line. This put all together meant when we got it right we played good rugby, controlling possession and scoring good team tries on some very good opposition. Often frustrating teams and their coaches, which sometimes led to large scores in our favour. Losing Josh to a season ending arm injury was a big loss to the side, compounded by losing Ed with a similar injury.

With Mat relocating to the UK mid-season we needed to find an inside centre and as luck had it we had a new boy to rugby who we had been teaching to play wing and outside centre. Andrew was willing and learnt fast, becoming a weapon for us in the second half of the season causing many teams problems in defence and opening up space and possibilities for our backs. With the talent of these boys and the team spirit they have, being minor premiers this year and winning the cup grand final 39 to 19 is a fitting result for the effort put in by the boys. The team were able to keep to a set plan and style, which is difficult when so many had not played together and some were fairly new to rugby.

Special thanks go to Warwick who took on the manager’s role this year and been outstanding for the team and to Sean for helping with the coaching when possible.

U12 BUCKS What a great bunch of boys, and what a lot of fun! We started the year as a rag-tag bunch of beginners and finished as a TEAM – a genuine rugby team that made the Cup Grand Final and nearly took it all the way! There were standout performances across the park, with every boy worthy of a rugby cliché: Nick Adams - nimble footed and loved running to find the gaps; tore them apart all season.

Mathew Arora - relished the tough stuff of the engine room and was a Trojan all year.

Matthew Berkery – the General who knows that forwards win matches, but the backs decide by how much. Always made the first tackle.

Will Douglas – had the leg-strength to perfect the Samoan sidestep and kept the backs going forward. Never gave up.

James Fantham – speed to burn and he knew they can’t run without legs. Never stopped trying.

Ewan Hudson – Like a good vintage wine, improved with age. Fronted up in the forwards doing the grunt work.

Sam Johnston – a workhorse who transformed into a thoroughbred each game. Won each ruck by 3 lengths.

Lachlan Kee – Volunteered to play up an age group, and what a brave and tenacious champion he was.

Jake Martin – Completely understands "The bigger they are the harder they fall", so tackled everything in sight.

Luke Nicolson – Loved to run hard; loved to run straight; loved to run over them.

Ben Ostowari – Skill and panache and a very welcome addition in the final weeks of the season.

Aroon Parthasarathy – Perfect Clubman who fronted up in the forwards and had all the skills. Any loose ball was his for the taking.

James Price – Some call them opponents. He calls them victims. Tackled everything that moved all season. If it didn’t move, he pushed it.

Hugh Rocks – Smiled with glee when he heard the call of “Crouch; touch; pause; engage”. Loved the hard stuff up front.

Anthony Sutton - The Black Caviar of Rugby. Never beaten in a sprint to the line. Try scoring machine.

Patrick (Tappy) Tynan – Will Genia would be proud of the “both sides” bullet pass. Hit his straps by the end of the season around the rucks and tackled well.

Austin Wagner – Head down burrowing all day long. Never afraid to get in amongst it and come out of a ruck with the ball. Definitely tackles above his weight.

Cameron Walker –the grace of the panther and the heart of the lion, he perfected the tough Number 8 moves off the back.

If life is all about doing your best no matter what the circumstances, then the U12 Bucks are a team of true champions. Special thanks must go to Coach Kurt who should be proud of his achievements. 2012 will be a season the boys will never forget.

Ticka (Damian) Tynan - Manager

U12Â TARTANSÂ 2012 was a most enjoyable and very successful season for the U12 Tartans. On the field we only lost 2 of our 14 competition rounds and finished second in the minor premiership. We played the major semi-final against the undefeated Hunters Hill and played arguably our finest game putting the minor premiers 'to the sword'! In the Grand Final we played our arch rivals Harbord for the second year in a row, and unfortunately finished with the same result as the previous year. This was obviously disappointing to all concerned, however the better team on the day were victorious and we will all plan to go one better in 2013!!!

The team was captained by Luke Reimer who provided inspiration week in and week out with his hard running. Julian 'Axe' Heaven and Mitch Cannell were our book ends and managed to get the upperhand against most of the other front rows we came up against. Nelson Roberts, at hooker really came into his own this year, he was outstanding and as he matures will become a great rake. Hunter 'longest feet in the comp'Goodrick and Nathanial 'the bleeder' Panozzo were our second rowers, their work in the engine room provided our 'go forward' all year. May need a summer 'off the pies' if they hope to be' the lifted' rather than'the lifters' in next years lineouts! Our looseys were Luke 'looks like a back - plays like a forward' Thackray, Harry 'summer ON the pies' Barkl and Jesse 'the professor' Cavanough. They all had great seasons and went at 100% to all of their tasks.

Our halves were Ben Fawcett and Charlie Hannell, they formed a fine combination and, both could do with a summer on the fruit and veg to bulk up for next year! Our outer backs were rotated where ever possible. Tom Cameron was our vice-captain and always led by example, Josh Farr-Jones was as elusive as always and Harry Stinson played well above his weight . The fast men out wide saw a lot more ball this year and revelled in the challenge. Liam Woods, our superboot, and Tom Gillis had great seasons, and showed great improvement as the season progressed. Declan 'Mr Fix it' was a welcome addition this season and moved between forwards and backs as required with ease. Richie 'don't eat anything this summer' Sears was our gas man. He fitted in really well and hopefully made some great mates along the way.Thanks also to all the players from our Highlanders and U11's who helped out during the season, in particular Lachy Albert who showed maturity beyond his years.

Goodo's attention to detail was amazing and showed why he earnt coach of the year in 2011. Lord Thackers admin skills were magnificent, thanks also to Tim Roberts on the flag. To Woodsie,Stinky, Brett Cameron, Andy Heaven and all the hard working parents who helped during the season, a sincere thanks for a fantastic season.

U13Â HIGHLANDERSÂ 2012 was a season built on a mix of Highlanders from prior years and boys coming through from the Bucks of 2011, as well as a few new starters to the Club. With the change between primary school and high school for the Boys, we were bound to lose a number of boys from our age group.

This resulted in the changes above and a few of our Highlander players of prior years moving up to the Tartans (although well deserved).

As a result, our team although well-credentialed from prior years was probably a little misplaced in the C Competition. Despite requests to SJRU to move us to a lower grade and some early scores that indicated we were slightly off C grade pace, the Highlanders reputation of prior years ensued and we were duly told (after agitated protest from the Coach to higher levels of SJRU) that we were a C team. With that out of the way, we settled into getting the team focussed on playing the game and extracting some wins from the season.

Notwithstanding our efforts to change competition, the boys never complained and the attitude of the team overall throughout the season was fantastic. Whether it was a win or a loss, the boys approached the game with enthusiasm and always made an effort.

Having said that, the most annoying trait of this team was to leak a try to the opposition within the first 3 minutes of the game. No matter what I said before the game, we always managed to start the game as if they were all watching from the sidelines. Once we had duly provided the opposition with a lead, the boys would suddenly switch on to the game and we in most instances would start to regain some ascendancy in the 2nd half. The 2nd half was always our better half and I have often wondered, if we were able to put in a more consistent 50 minutes game fashioned off the 2nd half effort, we probably would have been a Top 4 team.

Our other consistent weakness was tackling. If one of the smallest guys on the team can tackle a player of any size, day in day out, the rest of our team should be able to defend to a more consistent standard at this level and something to work on into 2013 season.

Overall in the forwards, we had a good pack with a great scrum (carrying on the Highlanders tradition) and some good backrowers getting to the breakdown quickly. Well done to each of Ben Amos, Will Marrison, Mat Williams, James Penfold, Ben Gilmore, Jake Gram, Louie Wright, Kyle Macleod, Sam Spanton, Myles Elston, Luke Strachan and Austin Rewell.

Our backs made great progress throughput the season, with Pat Guihot and Alec Johnson making a devastating centre pairing when they ran straight and hard. Lachie Stuart continued to amaze with his tackling and work rate. Mitchell Nicholas, James Davis, Armin Kasler, Nathan Little, Tim Payne, Teika Haireka, Jos Brown Collins all made great and improved contributions through the season.

A big thank you to James Stuart for assisting in coaching, our new team manager in Kirstie Leahy, support in transition from Brooke Stuart, team doctor Mike Amos and team motivator Jason Gram . A big thank you also to a great bunch of parents in the Highlanders team overall!

Thanks also to U12 age coordinator Geoff Sullivan and Tartans coach Jim Fenwicke, particularly in making sure we maximised sharing of our transferables during the season. And to our favoured old Highlanders team mates (from Tartans) who when asked always came to make up the numbers for their beloved Highlanders.

So to all the boys of the U13 Highlanders, we hope you come back next year. You were a great group to coach, you loved your Rugby and you had true team spirit. See you in 2013. Rory Macleod, Coach

U13 TARTANS We were enormously proud of the way the boys finished off the season with a close fought loss against KWP who were a top four finisher. Some rugby seasons are tough, and after two plate grand final victories in the last two seasons the 13 Tartans again lined up in the A competition which was bolstered by the addition of some more Southern zone teams. With a playing roster of only 19, the injuries we suffered during the season had a big impact and the team really appreciated the efforts of the U12 boys and the Highlanders who answered the call for help from us this year.

In a season with only one victory many of the triumphs were of a more personal nature. It was how the boys reacted in the face of adversity that was a real measure of success for the season - playing a very talented Coogee side in the second last game, the boys refused to invoke the mercy rule and played for the full 60 minutes which is a tribute to their character and team spirit.

We were very pleased with many aspects of the boys’ play during the season. The scrum was rock solid anchored by Nick Gell and Thomas Moore with Hugo Alley always a threat to opposition ball. Special mention goes to Harry Mainsbridge who played like a much bigger man when he filled in for the front row. Jack Sharp was our main lineout weapon while Bryn Thompson and Ben Sullivan grew in stature during the season adding much needed go forward to the pack. Tom Fenwicke was all over the park and the team really missed Angus Davidson after he suffered a season ending skiing injury. The team was fortunate to have Charlie Rorke playing with us at number 8, he plays with intensity and aggression and lead the way for the forwards all season.

In the backs, Finn Purkiss and Jeremy Hutton settled in as a reliable halves combination, with Ben Houston and Lachie May proving to be versatile, playing everywhere in the backline in 2012. We were unlucky not to have our speed team of Hunter Myers, Jayden Burgess, George Gardiner, Will Lloyd and Nick O’Donohue on the field together more often this year. Jayden was playing great rugby up until getting injured, Will was injured in the last four rounds and the team really missed the both of them.

George Gardiner played his best game of the season in the final game after some time on the sideline with a skiing injury. Hunter Myers and Nick O’Donohue deserve special mention as week in week out they held our backline together providing the bulk of our attacking options.

Thank you again to our super manager Linda Davidson and to Geoff Sullivan for another year of keeping us organised as age coordinator. Thanks to the parents for delivering the boys to training and the games each week and for being well behaved on the sideline.

Boys, you faced some very strong teams this year, often many players short of full strength, you dug deep and bravely fought on and we are very proud of your efforts.

U14 HIGHLANDERS Played 13 games. Won 6 and lost 7.

2012 was a great year. We had some big wins and we had a number of narrow losses. We finished fourth and bowed out in the semi-finals. At the start of the season we had half the squad backing up from last year and a mixture of players new to the club and a couple new to Rugby.

It was the genius of the committed coaching staff that turned this collection of boys into a team. And by the end of the season they were a team. Everybody watching their last few games was deeply impressed by the cohesion and drive of the forwards and the organisation of the backs. Support play was the order of the day whether passing and looping in the backs or piling in with numbers at the breakdown.

We lost a number of key players to injury and it was a pleasure to see most of those boys turn up to cheer on their mates.

The season had many highlights. For me, putting 50+ on Mosman at Mosman on Mother’s day was a personal favourite. I also enjoyed the 14-7 loss to KWP in round 13. A team that had beaten us easily in round 6 knew they were very lucky to get away with that one. And none of the Highlanders many fans will forget that semi against Lane Cove. Lane Cove’s ability to call on “A” team players wore us down in the finish but we didn’t go down without one hell of a fight. Our boy’s disappointment at the end was testimony to how much they had given.

The real highlight though, was the creation of a team at a Community Club. As Junior said, These boys may, or may not play together again but they will run into each other around the traps and they will always have that connection, “ I used to play rugby for Lindfield with you”. And while it is “all about the kids” a disparate group of parents have also made good and lasting friendships.

It is only a game when all is said and done but it is also much more than a game. It is an opportunity to make lifelong friends, to test yourself both physically and mentally, to be part of something bigger than yourself and to learn the pleasure and discipline of being part of a team- doing your bit and trusting others to do theirs.

It has been a pleasure and an honour to be part of this team and I look forward to bigger and better things next year.

U14 LINDFIELD/NORTHS The U14 age group commenced the season with the difficult position of not having enough players for two teams, but really too many for one.

North’s, who had lost a significant number of players, proposed a joint side with Lindfield.

Regrading to D division after round 4 saw the boys get their first win over a big tough side from Oatley. With the school holidays over the side was back to near full strength and confidence was on the up and, in a spirit of rebirth, the boys decided to dub themselves ‘Lindfield Pirates’. With this in mind and some inspiration from the Tour-de-France, in progress at the time, the boys commenced the ‘Tour-de-finals’.

Stage 1: Hunters Hill, a tough side ranked No 3. Winning 22-15 despite a red headed centre being yellow carded in his first game of the season.

Stage 2: Oatley and a close win 17-12. Another hard encounter where Alex Heath showed his skill and grit tackling boys much bigger than himself.

Stage 3 was a try fest against an outclassed Newport team, the team winning 34-7 and we were well and truly in finals contention.

Stage 4: Wakehurst, played in freezing conditions on a hard field on a Tuesday night. The league based Wakehurst side provided a reality check winning 17-0 in a physical encounter that saw many bruises and unfortunately resulted in Aaron Panozzo breaking his arm. Aaron had made the move from the forwards to the wing and was proving a tough defender and a flyer and the team was sorry to lose him to injury but grateful for his support on the sidelines even when injured.

Stage 5, the last comp round, was against Beecroft and proved another try fest as the boys bounced back from the Wakehurst loss winning 41-7.

Stage 6 was the first semi and another rematch with Oatley, though this time the boys were in form winning 43-17.

Stage 7: Wahroonga, the minor premiers - It proved one of the great games of club rugby, a nil all struggle for 3/4s of the game. The Pirates finally managed to score but did not convert and unfortunately Wahroonga bounced back with a quick converted try. The Pirates then fought their way back down the ground and, with a minute to go, were awarded a penalty. Reminiscent of John Eels, Tyler Baltussen was then able to calmly slot a penalty kick despite a poor angle and windy conditions and it was 8-7 to the Pirates!

Stage 8: Grand Final against Wakehurst. The Pirates made a good start and were first to score, but Wakehurst proved stronger winning 22-5.

Of the boys: The props Hamish Stanton and Dom Westward, were rock solid in the scrums and contested the breakdown well. No 2 James Davis was an accurate lineout thrower and won a few tight head scrums. Matt Webb in the 2nd row was the team captain and always lead by example , while partner Spencer Wagner was always competing at the breakdown. Flankers Nathan Bhomer, Campbell McClelland and Jake Hind were all new to the club but showed their skill, Jake’s tackles particularly solid and Nathan a great lineout jumper. Harry Cannell at number 8 has really matured as a player and made some devastating runs. Alex Heath at No 9 was rock solid in defence while fast and accurate in distributing the ball.

Jack Stinson at No 10 made some scything tackles on much bigger boys and calmly distributed the ball to his outside backs. Sam Lucas at 12 was able to cut into the defence while making many crucial tackles himself. Matt Sears at No 13, missed the first 9 rounds through injury, but made up at the end with at least a try a game. James Gall, Aaron Panozzo were our wingers, speedy down the side and great defenders. Chris Dellit, also on the wing, was a welcome addition to the team mid-season. Tyler Baltussen and Max Buckley played full-back or wing and were the ever reliable last line of defence as well as great impact runners in the line. Tyler’s goal kicking was also invaluable. We were also helped out by Highlanders Fin Edward, Tom Wilks, Olly Sims, Henry Neilson and Leo Hovhannisyan who helped bolster the side when numbers were depleted.

Thanks also to our coach Josh Clarke, ably supported by Simon Cannell and the management team of Rory Lucas, Richard Gall and John Sears.

U15 TARTANS One of the most enjoyable parts of this season has been watching a sensational rugby team playing entertaining running rugby in the spirit rugby should be played. Anyone associated with Lindfield rugby would be very proud of how the Lindfield Tartans U15s played and the sportsmanship they have shown week in, week out when representing Lindfield. Their competitive nature and exemplary sportsmanship has made us all very proud.

In these times of sometimes volatile sidelines at kid’s sport, the following blog written by a Newport parent is something that the boys and parents can all be proud of. .

I had the pleasure of being at the Lindfield V Newport U/15 Major semi on Sunday A healthy rivalry has developed between these two teams.

A tough physical match with the lads on both sides still feeling it today I am sure.

The genuine goodwill between spectators and players on both sides is a model and reminder of the good things in Rugby. “Woodrat”

The highlights of our season were:

The brutal physicality of all of our forwards, matching it with opposition who the majority of times were much larger than them.

The speed and strategic play of the entire backline, and their never-ending ability to score try after try.

The enthusiasm shown by Highlanders to back up and help us out when required due to both injury and representative duties.

Representative honours with 14 of the Tartans representing the Gordon district & 2 representing Norths at the State Champs, 8 boys chosen to represent Metropolitan North Zone, 5 chosen in the Sydney team, and 4 chosen to represent NSW U15s.

The way the remaining core group of players stood up and dug deep to remain undefeated throughout the season (after regrading), when the rep duties clashed with our club games.

Taking out the Minor Premiership after having won close, hard-fought matches with Newport, Coogee, Merrylands and Dural.

Grand Finalists and Stinkymoose cup winners, with 344 points For and 154 Against for the season.

Our Grand Final was a tough battle against Newport. It wasn’t the result we wanted but the Tartans can hold their heads high for what was an amazing and successful year. Without doubt the Lindfield boys were the entertainers of the competition.

Thanks to the other coaches, Paul McGregor and Bernie Rorke. These coaches have been huge influences on helping the boys development as rugby players. Thanks to Ed Vinzenz, the world’s greatest manager for your huge amount of work, always ensuring the boys and coaches have everything they require. Thanks also to Ticka who has refereed a few times for us when we have had a no-show from the scheduled ref.

Huge thanks to the parents for match reports, action photos, touch judge and ground marshall duties, running the water, BBQ/ canteen duties and all-round encouragement and support for this great bunch of boys who love their rugby.

It has been an absolute pleasure coaching each and every one of you boys over the years, I am truly proud of how you have all developed and I hope to see as many of you as possible back next year for another crack at the title.

U15Â HIGHLANDERSÂ Our season started off unsure of how many teams we would be able to field in this age grade this year, as the season neared we were short a few players from where we would have liked to be. Thankfully we managed to find boys interested in returning to club rugby and a few others that had not played for a while or were new to our club.

With these additions we looked set for a good year.

With our front row needing a player we were happy to welcome Dan Barkl who decided to play up a year and join us.

We struggled to field backs in our first few games and had several forwards some of who were new to rugby filling in positions they had never played before. Even with this we pushed a lot of the top teams in our grade and often led the games to be run down in the closing stages. We suffered through lack of numbers particularly in the backs with season ending injuries to Darcy and Greg in our trial game. Cam Scanlon was also managing a shoulder injury for a large part of the season, add to this a skate boarding injury (Brandon) and the normal rugby knocks we were often filling positions on the morning of the game.

Even with these problems we often got it together on the field and at times even opposition coaches were stunned with some of our play. Driving mauls for 40 plus meters, set piece tries from scrum and lineouts, and when we were able to field a full backline we showed some outstanding running skills with ball in hand. On several occasions some of our players stood and watched as our backs scored outstanding tries. Scoring points against the best teams in our grade was not a problem and the team attitude of helping out where ever needed on the field was what nearly got us through to the finals.

Some of the Highlights would have to be watching our forwards which contained a lot of players new to this grade take it up to some of the more fancied sides, and of course watching some of the fantastic tries laid on by our backs.

Also pleasing was the way all the new guys to the team took up the Highlanders no kicking policy in general play.

Overall 24 guys got to play rugby and as a team they enjoyed the games they played and we enjoyed watching them.

U16 LINDFIELD I write this report the day after we bought the curtain down on season 2012, with a tremendous 17 to 12 win over Lane Cove in the Grand Final and after securing the minor premiership three weeks prior. It is hard to sum up in a few words how proud I am of this remarkable bunch of young men, many who have represented the club with such distinction and courage over several years.

My journey with many of these boys started eight years ago in season 2005. A far cry from running behind a rabble of boys on the field as coach, during the Under 9s, to now seeing them as Under 16s, put their bodies on the line, take all the right options to eventually secure a Grand Final win through high quality rugby. Words do not justify the absolute privilege it has been to not only be involved in the development of their rugby skills but to observe their development into a group of fantastic young men.

This premiership win is there to be enjoyed by all coaches involved with this age group over the years including Richard Martyr, Jim Fenwicke and Junior McElroy. It is also fitting to recognise all boys that have played in the age group in the past, particularly Hamish Martyr who was so tragically taken from us this year, whose collective contribution and courage have all helped mold the team culture and create a steely determination amongst this age group.

Thank you to my senior player group including Captain Dave B, Vice Captains Blocker, Adam Barrow and Sean Campbell. Your support, commitment and determination not only this year but for all my years as coach, has been invaluable and has truly made the difference.

To the other players Haydos, Spence, Alex, Jackson, Josh M, Woody, Josh P, Pete, Will Evans, Will Eriksson, Dave J, Andrew, Jono, Axe, Richie, Jezza, Thomo, Matty, Demo, Reuben, Jarred, Pat, Lachie and part timers Jimmy and Ben thank you all for a superb season and contribution.

Thanks to Jeff Bolt our manager and co-coach James Balcomb for uncompromising support. Thanks to Steve Alley our linesmen and to my wife Pia for being so supportive. Thank you to the parents of these fine young men, your resolute support particularly in the Grand Final got us home.
