Publisher’s note

Second Half THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR IS ALWAYS THE BUSIEST AND THE MOST FUN – CERTAINLY MONACO IS A HIGHLIGHT AND WE PREVIEW MANY OF THE MUST-SEES IN THIS ISSUE OF SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY.

MARCO GEELS | CCO MARCO@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

At Monaco I can also give you a preview of our plans as we head into our 10th anniversary year in 2015. Over the next months, many of us will be jet-setting to the world’s main shows after much hard work preparing. But now the fun starts, you get to meet your clients, potentials and industry friends several times at different beautiful locations in a short time period. Certainly that’s been my experience with SuperYacht Industry. It’s not only shows like MYS 2014 – I also spend time visiting newsmakers. We take a closer look at Sunseeker’s new build Blush on pg 12, and you won’t want to miss the latest luxury sensation in speed by Kormaran on pg 40. Recently at the IMS Shipyard in Saint-Mandrier sur Mer near Toulon, I spoke with Denis Pellegrino. With their new investments, the yard claims to be the largest yacht repair shipyard on the Mediterranean – read more on pg 50. The repair industry is increasingly the focus of not only yards, but also trade bodies. The U.S. Superyacht Association recently highlighted the immense positive employment and economic impact each superyacht brings to US shores. One superyacht can generate USD 4.75 million in annual expenses, a large proportion for maintenance and repair. According to one trade source, the US is the largest service and manufacturing country for superyachts in terms of direct employees. In other words, ‘big boats equal big jobs’. Similarly the MYBA is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a look back at the economic benefit of the industry and the value of increasing professional standards. Read more on pg 46. Next year SuperYacht Industry will celebrate its first decade, firmly establishing this trade journal in the market. I hope to meet you at MYS or one of the other shows this year and share with you the communications opportunities offered in our Media Kit 2015.

NEWS IN BRIEF SYI FEATURE

55m Benetti Largest at Cannes The Cannes Yachting Festival – formerly known as the Festival de la Plaisance de Cannes – is taking place between 9 and 14 September 2014 on the glittering Bay of Cannes. This year sees major renovations to Cannes’ marinas being completed and looks set to welcome over 50,000 visitors to the show. Living up to its reputation for the latest boats from the world’s finest shipyards, the Cannes Yachting Festival welcomes a host of

international exhibitors. Benetti will showcase the 55m Ocean Paradise – the biggest yacht at the festival. With Ocean Paradise, Benetti gives further proof of their capability in interpreting and adapting to owners’ requests. Many elements make this yacht an example of custom avant-garde solutions: from the furnishings to the highly elaborate illumination plan.

Heesen’s Project Hé Sold In June Heesen Yachts sold the 47m displacement yacht, YN 16947 Project Hé. Mark Cavendish, Sales and Marketing Director at Heesen Yachts, comments: “This is the fourth contract we have signed in the first 6 months of 2014. We are delighted to see that the market is finally picking up!” Project Hé is a yacht in the 47m class, a breed of Heesens that are icons of classic contemporary yacht design. Frank Laupman from Omega Architects recently restyled the elegant exterior lines giving this vessel a new look. Project Hé will be delivered to her owners in February 2015. NEWS IN BRIEF World’s Largest Sailboat It’s not completely ready to go, but the world’s largest sailboat, at 146m, will feature the most innovative emission control technique from Emigreen. The vessel – currently under construction in Germany – is one of a kind, not only because of its massive size and draught of 17m, but also due to the high-end technology in the engine room applied by Emigreen. The company produces customised, integrated emission control solutions, for the maritime and other sectors. According to Emigreen: “We link science and the market. Therefore all of our solutions are highly efficient, highly reliable and highly controllable, whether designed for an inland barge, short-sea carrier or luxury yacht like the one being built in Germany right now.”

Volpini Reborn After an extensive winter refit at Amels in the Netherlands, Volpini is back in the Mediterranean. Owner representative Ben Young of SYM oversaw the project on the 49.3m superyacht, originally delivered by Amels in 2004. He says the reason the new owner chose Amels for the refit was to ensure the continuity of the same standard carried out throughout. The scope of work included a full repaint, interior customisation, machinery and electronics upgrades. During her stay, Volpini also underwent her 10-year class survey.

New Under 500GT Diesel Engine Standard Published in July, the latest ISO standard by the Sub-Committee 12 for Large Yachts (TC 8/SC 12) is ISO 14885 – Large yachts – Diesel engines for main propulsion and essential auxiliaries – Safety requirements. This international standard specifies the safety requirements for diesel engines within a rated power of 100kW and over for propulsion and essential auxiliaries; for power generation for large yachts 24m and over (less than 500GT) in commercial use for sport or pleasure with up to twelve

passengers. This standard does not cover emergency generators. ICOMIA Technical Manager Patrick Hemp: “ISO Standards developed by TC 8/SC 12 are beneficial to superyacht construction, as they deal with areas not covered by class rules, or where class rules are not appropriate for superyachts.”

Tankoa’s New 50m Project

At MYS, Tankoa Yachts is releasing full details of its new 50m Paszkowski designed motoryacht project, named S501. The Genoa yard says that so far, four clients have shown a solid interest for this new model that will be available with two different hull designs. In its full displacement version, the S501 will be capable of a 16 or 18 knot top speed, while in its semi-displacement variant, she will be capable of 27 knots. Both versions will be entirely built in aluminium light alloy 5083 and fall within the 499GT range. The project follows the yard’s construction contract for S693 – their 69.4m yacht due for delivery in July 2015.

Holland Jachtbouw’s New 51m Schooner Holland Jachtbouw has signed a contract to build a 51m schooner from the drawing board of Dykstra Naval Achitects due to launch in Spring 2016. The aluminium hull is being built at Shipyard Made in Moerdijk in the Netherlands and will arrive with Holland Jachtbouw early in 2015. Recently Mastership received the assignment to execute the work preparation the yacht for Shipyard Made. The project has been divided into five separate building sections. Mastership have started the work for the second section. Meanwhile the parts of the first section are cut, delivered to the yard and ready to be assembled. The rig, including all spars and topmasts, will be made by Ventis Enkhuizen, with the main mast at a length of 52m supporting a 25m boom. Displacing 343t, the schooner will be fitted with a hybrid drive, similar to the system developed by Holland Jachtbouw which was built into the J Class Rainbow.

Šibenik Joins ICOMIA Refit Group

Isa’s Forever One

Croatian shipyard NCP-Repair Shipyard Šibenik has joined the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) Superyacht Refit Group as its 11th member. The group represents quality refit, repair and maintenance yards. Working towards maintaining and improving global superyacht quality, the Refit Group follows professional working standards and specified environmental practices. NCP-Repair Shipyard Šibenik is one of the leading ship repair yards on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, specialising in repairs of all types of vessels up to 90m and in new build vessels up to 60m. Isa Yachts has launched the fully custom five-deck yacht Forever One. Horacio Bozzo Design is behind the 54m full displacement yacht with an aluminium superstructure and an impressive steel hull with reverse bow. The interior design is by Alessandro Massari/ Studio Massari. The layout is quite unconventional and the challenge was to fit several features that make her unique. The owner’s deck is one of the peculiarities with a private balcony accessible from the stateroom and a large aft deck terrace. Foldable bulwarks on the main deck grant a spectacular view to the exterior.

YACHT REPORT

unseeker International’s new flagship tri-deck, 155 Yacht, is the biggest project ever undertaken by the luxury yacht manufacturer. With the design concept conceived in the UK, and the build and testing phase taking place in Poole, it was very fitting that the 155 Yacht was officially launched in Poole, too. Robert Braithwaite, Group President at Sunseeker International, commented: “We were incredibly proud to launch the 155 Yacht here in Poole with Mr Jordan. The 155 Yacht is a truly iconic British yacht. From drawing board through to testing, the yacht was designed and built in Poole and the fact the launch took place here made it all the more special.” The vessel was rigorously tested in the shipyard and on the high seas for over 2 years, before the moment of delivery finally arrived.

High Degree of Customisation With Blush, Sunseeker has taken the concept of series building with personal customisation one step further, with a modular build methodology which enables the owners to have direct input not only into the interior design and layout but the actual superstructure of the yacht. According to Mr Jordan’s wishes the yacht now boasts an impressive accommodation for guests, while the forward lower deck area can accommodate up to ten

crew, with a separate captain’s cabin. “With this yacht we have entered a new dimension and I am immensely proud that we have achieved it together,” says Mr Braithwaite. His team worked on the design and construction of the vessel for almost 4 years. In the process, they even had help from engineers who had previously been involved in designing cars for the McLaren Formula 1 racing team. As could be expected for an owner from the Formula 1 circuit, nothing has been spared in the top-of-the-range power generation. The MTU propulsion system is not only known for its clean combustion, but also for its power and performance – delivering 4.3MW of total power installed.

Appealing Features Beyond the impressive statistics, it is Blush’s contemporary interior and exterior design that truly makes the 155 Yacht stand out from the crowd. The exterior paintwork features a stunning ice blue hull. The unique interior features an exclusive design palette, which highlights grey, blue, green and an overall chic aqua feel. The accommodation on the 155 Yacht is equally as spectacular, with two VIP cabins on the main deck which feature ceiling to floor glass windows to create a dramatic feeling of light and space, as well as spectacular views. Blush also includes a formal dining area with

side patio doors, balconies for uninterrupted sea views whilst dining, and a fully equipped commercial galley. While the spacious and stylish private accommodation is clearly one of the most appealing features of Sunseeker’s flagship yacht, the expanse of entertainment space will no doubt also prove useful. The upper deck alone features a huge sky lounge that can be dedicated to private entertainment. The team at Poole have worked closely with Mr Jordan to ensure his personality is reflected in the design but have also made sure that the trademark Sunseeker standards are evident throughout.

Powerful Prowess As mentioned above, the aesthetic design of the yacht will be matched by her powerful ability. For Sunseeker’s flagship, MTU supplied the complete package consisting of propulsion engines, gearbox, automation system, fuel conditioning system, onboard emergency

generator with an output of 55kW and two 155kW onboard gensets for ship’s services. The power required for the propulsion of the new Sunseeker 155 is delivered by two MTU 12V 4000 M73L engines. and build process allows her owners a virtual freehand when designing the yacht to their own specification, so this yacht’s layout and interior finish will be dramatically different to that of Mr Jordan’s. Scheduled to be delivered to her owner in summer 2016, the second 155 Yacht will boast a six cabin arrangement. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have sold another 155 Yacht. The 155 Yacht’s intricate design and build process allows for customisation of the highest level and as each yacht is so individual and unique it makes the build ever more exciting. The team back in Poole can’t wait to start work on this and are eager to create something truly bespoke. This latest commission just goes to show the level of enquiry from this ever growing international show.”

168 Sport Yacht Recently Sunseeker announced its most ambitious project to date within its new custom 168 Sport Yacht that will expand the Sunseeker range to over 51m when the yacht is delivered in 2017. The new sport yacht will boast the interior volume of a tri-deck yacht, coupled with aggressive exterior styling of a sport yacht – bringing together an exciting combination of performance, looks and space. Engine options will provide economical displacement cruising of more than 4,000 miles together with the option of hitting 25 knots. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International: “Words cannot capture how excited we all are to be building such an awe-inspiring sport yacht so quickly after the launch of our majestic 155 Yacht. The new custom 168 Sport Yacht will be a true flagship for the Sunseeker range and is sure to capture the hearts of yacht lovers across the globe.”

Equanimity provides luxury accommodation for 26 guests in a variety of flexibly configured staterooms – a magnificent master suite, three VIPs, three doubles and two twin staterooms – and has ample accommodation for 28 crew to cater to all the owners’ and guests’ desires. Oriental-Inspired Ambiance Equanimity’s breathtakingly beautiful interior has benefitted from the quintessential touch of designer Andrew Winch. The inherent oriental-inspired themes yield a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold leaf, bamboo and marbles creating an opulent and soothing ambiance that

complements the owners’ origins in China. The grandeur of the spa and beach club is complete with sauna, hammam, experiential showers, plunge pool and multi-faceted beauty salon. The spa area leads on to a fully equipped gym and Pilates studio that can be extended through a fold down platform at sea level, creating an indoor-outdoor wellness area that is unequalled afloat.

TRADE SHOW

THE BIGGEST EDITION EVER

Monaco Yacht Show 2014 This year the world’s largest showcase for superyachts afloat, the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), will be the biggest ever. With an expanded exhibition area and berthing for over 100 superyachts in the Port Hercules of Monaco, this annual event attracts industry leaders and a ultra wealthy clientele from around the world and offers top-class services to meet the demands of this elite clientele: VIP passes, luxury courtesy car services, helicopters and bus or boat shuttles.

T

his time MYS will showcase 115 spectacular yachts from 25 to 100m and about 30 luxury tenders, 40 of them will be unveiled to the public for the first time. The extended exhibition, with around 400 additional square metres available for stands, will host the most renowned and finest suppliers of the industry. In addition the princely destination is a well known staple amongst Mediterranean cruising grounds and has long been the destination of choice for superyacht owners and guests, making Monaco a natural home for this unique event.

Exclusive Enjoyment The Upper Deck Lounge, in the heart of the show area, is designed to be a place for meetings, dining in the restaurant catered by Private Dining by Fairmont Monte-Carlo, or a glass of champagne by Taittinger in a luxurious designed setting. The Upper Deck Lounge also includes several reception areas reserved exclusively for the executives of exhibiting companies, areas where they can talk with their

TRADE SHOW customers in confidence. On display in the lounge will be the finest timekeepers manufactured by the Swiss luxury watchmaker Ulysse Nardin, official sponsor of the MYS for the 6th consecutive year.

Superyachting Way of Life New this year is the superyacht captains and crew exclusive lounge, C&C Lounge, located in the show venue, beside the new Monaco Yacht Club. The C&C Lounge will offer services of high quality: animations, a relaxation area with massages or a chance to simply meet up and chill out. According to Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of MYS, “Offering a real lounge especially for crews has become essential and natural for us. Our main concern was to really welcome those men and women who are the heart and soul of a yacht.” She also stresses the importance of the captain and crew members on board a yacht: “Their role is incommensurate: their relationships with the owner are unique and privileged, based on complete trust. How could it be otherwise with ‘men’ who are entrusted the management of a floating palace that is worth several millions of Euros? The Monaco Yacht Show must be the celebration of the superyachting way of life, whether you are the owner or a crew member.”

24/7 Networking What makes Monaco so special during the MYS are the events held every day: press conferences, debates with the market leaders

Software Development

Lantic designs and builds the modular technology that controls, stores and distributes all types of stored, broadcast and online content. This approach allows Lantic to maintain a fast pace in software development and upgrades, ensuring that new and existing systems keep up to date and compatible with new equipment and protocols. Their booth at MYS will feature a Lantic system driving 4K ultra high resolution screens, along with a range of other upgrades via the newly released software version 2.9. Lantic also responds to the changing habits of superyacht owners by opening the way for the use of other alphabets and developed an Android version of the RC20 app. Also on show will be the new, onboard intranets that allow the easy generation and viewing of content generated on board, and visitors to the stand will be able to get a firsthand preview of Lantic’s plans for 2015. i. www.lantic-systems.com Booth QP54 / Zone Parvis Piscine

Cocktail or evening parties on board the yachts, yacht awards or gala dinners in the luxury hotels in the Principality are also some of the many highlights that enable formal and informal networking and often attract those that can afford and do buy superyachts.

Advanced Lighting Solutions

Yachtlite is always searching for the perfect lighting solution for outdoor applications, that is why they created a new product with a revolutionary production process: LED-illuminated elements. The elements function reliably under extreme conditions and have been successfully tested according to Germanischer Lloyd regulations against stress, vibrations, pressure, temperature and salt water. The sophisticated lighting elements enable completely new applications and are ideal for illuminated pool floors and dance floors, furniture lighting, ceilings and wall designs. An intelligent light and temperature management is the constructive basis for every lighting atmosphere: relaxed lounge ambience or dynamic animation. The elements are freely selectable in shape and size and are available in all standard LED colours and RGB. i. www.yachtlite.com Booth QD19 / Zone Darse Nord

Avant-Garde Elevators

As the specialist for bespoke elevators on yachts and private residences, Lift Emotion would like to invite interior designers to their stand at the show, where they will be available for requests and ideas for special elevators. There are many more options than just a round shaped elevator, what about a rotating elevator cabin inside a yacht? Lift Emotion recently produced and delivered several elevators for refit projects. They engineered a special lift system that allows them to install a lift system within small spaces and with limited impact on the structure of the vessel. This results in a really small pit depth. Most of the time Lift Emotion works within the floating floor space, with small trunk top heights. They also have a crew for elevator maintenance on yachts. i. www.lift-emotion.eu Booth QS62 / Zone Darse Sud

MYS’ LUXURY YACHT DEBUTS

Haute Couture

THIS YEAR’S MONACO YACHT SHOW (MYS) WILL SHOWCASE 115 SPECTACULAR YACHTS, OF WHICH 40 WILL BE UNVEILED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME. FOR GAËLLE TALLARIDA, THE SHOW’S MANAGING DIRECTOR, THE COMPARISON OF Monaco’s superyacht offering with Haute Couture collections is obvious: “In superyachting, as well as in Haute Couture, everything is possible, harmonious and luxurious with only the best of the best materials being used. Designers enjoy saying that the only limit to creating a yacht is the limit of the owner’s imagination! Each yacht is made possible by the work of hundreds of specialised and passionate employees. By listening carefully to the expectations and requests of both market professionals and yacht owners, the MYS strives to bring the two together in a befitting business ambience.” 2 8 | S Y I  2 0 1 4 | Vo l u m e 9 | Issue 3

Polaris

Rossinavi With her elegant lines and successful lay-out, Rossinavi’s Polaris is the perfect union between style and functionality. Her light aluminium semiplaning hull and superstructure and twin MTU 12V4000 M93L engines with 2,580kW power make this 49m yacht a high-performance vessel. Federico Rossi, Rossinavi COO said: “On Polaris we obtained performances even better than on previous PJIV, by adopting several lighting solutions. One important fact is that the vessel runs perfectly on her design lines – drawing a perfect wake at any speed. To give an idea of how much the hull is valid, the maximum list at full speed (24 knots, during RINA official trials) was a mere 2.5 degrees. In addition she features a trideck with wide spaces generously distributed between interior and exterior areas.

From her raked bow and elegant sheer line to her cutter rig and efficient sail handling systems, the 48m classic sloop is a fine example of revival naval architecture by Hoek Design. With a magnificent stained oak and wenge interior by Rhoades Young that takes full advantage of the generous hull to create voluminous saloons, a spacious full beam-master suite and extensive accommodation for both guests and crew, the yacht fulfils all her owner’s criteria for a comfortable cruising yacht that may also indulge in a little ‘gentleman’s racing’.

Illusion I

Benetti Yachts The 58m Illusion I from the Benetti family will be on display at the MYS. Her external design is the beautiful result of the Benetti design team with considerable input from the owner and his design staff. Designed for commercial charter, she features four decks plus a sun-deck. The owner will also use her privately, thanks to a layout that includes one VIP and four guest cabins, in addition to the owner’s cabin, giving her a total capacity of twelve plus one passengers. Illusion I is a very refined yacht with a very original décor, designed to furnish maximum possible comfort at sea, with record low levels of noise and vibration, and proudly maintains Benetti’s reputation.

Solandge

Lürssen One of the outstanding superyachts attending MYS is Solandge. Created for pleasure, the 85m Lürssen-built yacht is a family vessel that is set to become an icon of the charter market. Optimum comfort for family and guests is combined with excellent design and high specification engineering. Hand-carved glass columns, Venetian mirrors and an outstanding choice of natural materials, all reflecting the owner’s love of classical music and art, offer the air of luxury. The internal layout and the ample use of natural light ensure the ultimate superyacht experience. All this, while onboard technology provides quiet, smooth sailing.

Como

Feadship Feadship will showcase the 46.2m semidisplacement motoryacht Como, created for the highly experienced yachtsman Neville Crichton. Having previously built a large number of competitive sailing yachts in his native New Zealand, Mr Crichton decided the time had come to commission an entirely custom superyacht of the highest possible quality. Featuring a modern bow and whaleback sheer, Como’s exterior design by Dubois Naval Architects reflects the owner’s very specific ideas. The yacht has unprecedentedly large windows in the hull and there is a great deal of glass in the superstructure: the latter is placed on top of the metal rather than being set into it, creating a continuous glass surface. These glazed side panels give spectacular uninterrupted views from the owner’s stateroom.

THE NETHERLANDS

When these diesel engines became too complicated for general mechanics to service, Cramm saw the opportunity to expand by providing repairs and maintenance. This positive attitude paved the way for Cramm’s renowned full-service solution, whereby they take the project from the initial consultation to the design table right through to the installation and after sale service, making the process seamless and easy for the client. Having moved into the growing marine hydraulic industry in the 1970s, Cramm has now been part of that sector for 40 years, picking up decades of experience and garnering a strong international reputation. According to the company itself their strength lies in three main qualities: full collaboration on projects; future-thinking design; and guaranteed quality.

Trouble-Free Service Cramm offers their clients the most straightforward contact process by having one point of contact right from the start, ensuring clear and personal communication. Their main goal is to unburden their clients, by taking care of the entire process from design and production to installation and start-up. Customer focus is their main priority; this is why they also take care of the entire process from design, development and production to installation, warranty and maintenance. Once a project has been delivered, the knowledgeable after sales service team handle any

problems encountered with the products. All Cramm products come with a 5-year guarantee. Just recently Cramm Yachting Systems carried out work on board the Hakvoort motoryacht My Trust Fund in Loano, Italy. On the 45m yacht they carried out maintenance and service on the Cramm systems onboard and the cranes were also load tested and recertified. This hints that Cramm doesn’t just stop with making quality products. Research and development is at the heart of all that they do. A NEW CLASS OF LUXURY BOAT

Transforming THE TENDER

A NEW CLASS OF BOAT HAS EMERGED ON THE HORIZON, THE KORMARAN. UNVEILED THIS SUMMER, THIS LUXURY WATERCRAFT IS TRULY SPECTACULAR AND WILL CERTAINLY EXCITE SUPERYACHT OWNERS AND GUESTS WHEN IT EMERGES FROM THE TENDER GARAGE. ASIDE FROM the thrilling speed of a flying hydrofoil, what really sets the Kormaran apart is its ability to transform itself while underway – changing from an elegant, stable and comfortable dayboat to a flying speed demon. The vessel is an ambitious and visionary creation as well as an extraordinary achievement in engineering, mechatronics and luxury design. Certainly the producers of the James Bond films will be looking on in envy when the first production model is delivered.

n June the world premiere of the hightech Kormaran took place in Austria. The prototype of the 7m craft was on display, wowing onlookers with its luxurious looks, superyacht finish and technological promise. The Kormaran, which originates from an ambitious idea in 2007, is intended as an addition to the common classes of watertoys like monohull, catamaran and trimaran. “Our goal was to implement the vision of a watercraft, which combines all the advantages of the known classes of boat in itself,” commented the inventors of the Kormaran, Jutta and Oliver Kormann. “We place particular emphasis on perfection of the technical implementation and sustainability in all facets.” Their passion for perfection has resulted in a watercraft that elegantly combines the agility of a monohull for quick manoeuvres with the stability of a catamaran or trimaran. However, while conventional boats cannot change their characteristics, the Kormaran can gracefully transform.

High-Tech Transformation Developing the Kormaran began in earnest in 2010 after the Kormann’s founded the company in Salzburg. That year also saw the start of engineering. This was followed by an initial prototype (proof of concept) that was tested in trials in 2013. Its most important feature is the fact that the Kormaran can transform even while underway, this way the watercraft elegantly changes from a monohull to a catamaran or even a trimaran. Rising to its flying mode, the Kormaran uses hydrofoils, which expands the vision of the luxury boat. Water resistance can be reduced up to 80 percent. With the impressive speed records of Hydroptère and the exciting series in the America’s Cup, hydrofoils are red-hot in water sports. The advantages are obvious – higher speeds with lower energy consumption and a much more comfortable ride, thanks to the decoupling of the waves. The completely new design of the hydrofoils means

Connecting Worlds The design of the Kormaran connects the world of luxury yachts with the world of super sports cars and high-tech aviation. The watercraft is made from carbon fibre, including a carbon fibre monocoque. Built to top of the range automotive standards and integrated Formula 1 technology, coupled with lightweight aircraft technology and the latest security features, the Kormaran is a high-tech watercraft meeting the highest requirements. With special features such as the spacious sunbathing deck, heightadjustability, extraordinary wingdoors and the multifunctional light design, the Kormaran is a true show-stopper on the water. Completing the Kormaran’s suitability as a superyacht tender, it is finished to the highest quality in teak wood, finest leather, stainless steel and titanium. Plus, thanks to the spectacular lighting design, the boat appears like a comet through a cloud of light.

The Kormaran combines the agility of a monohull with the stability of a catamaran or trimaran.

Custom Engineering Excellence The Kormaran website lists a number of partners involved in the development of the watercraft. These companies illustrate the level of experience and workmanship involved – as well as the experience taken from the world of automotive racing concepts. From these hightech industries, Kormaran’s partners include the Stuttgart engineering company KLK, which specialises in the development of lightweight structures and structural mechanics. Staying in Austria, the Linz Center of Mechatronics is one of the leaders in the field for research and development. Also based in Linz, Neuson Hydrotec is a leading custom hydraulic solutions provider. However, the partners also include maritime experts, including the Vienna Model Basin Ltd – one of the oldest and most experienced institutes providing services in ship design and maritime operations. The project’s Austrian origins are also supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) – the national funding institution for applied research and development in Austria. Luxury yachting partners include Austria’s Boxmark, who deliver high class upholstery leather. From Germany, Wolz Nautic has a longstanding reputation for innovation in teak decking. And then rounding out the partners is the German superyacht lighting expert Yachtlite,

who have wide-ranging experience in custom solutions.

Yachting Sensation From the steps of the Alps, the creation of the Kormaran could well be the next yachting sensation to set the superyacht industry abuzz. The creators and their partners certainly have the necessary track record in innovation, technical and engineering mastery and luxury finishing, however the proof will be when the owner of the first Kormaran takes to the water, transforming the watercraft to its hydrofoil flying mode. For other superyacht owners looking on, this will certainly bring a new standard to the tender garages of the highest quality superyachts.

YACHT MANAGEMENT

MYBA CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF SERVING THE INDUSTRY

Looking Back

WITH PRIDE MYBA, THE WORLDWIDE YACHTING ASSOCIATION, CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. TO MARK THE EVENT, SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY INVITED them to spend a few moments stepping back in time to explain exactly how and why the association first came about and what becoming a MYBA member stands for within the industry.

W

ith the dawn of the 1980s corresponding with the number, length and value of private yachts gradually increasing, a small group of some of the Mediterranean’s most active brokers decided they needed a more coherent and collective voice within the industry. The other pressing requirement was the need for more standardised contracts from which yacht business could be conducted more efficiently, more harmoniously and more openly.

Photo courtesy of GW Yacht Photography

Pioneering Standards The days when a yacht sale was conducted by way of a modified merchant shipping contract of varying origin at best, or with minimal written information at worst, were gradually becoming less and less. Similarly, the times when organising a charter involved the local hotel concierge who knew a captain willing to take passengers out for some form of financial recompense had passed. In 1984, therefore, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association was formed by pioneering members with a common desire to improve standards for the benefit of all. Shortly thereafter, in 1986, with the first versions 4 6 | S Y I  2 0 1 4 | Vo l u m e 9 | Issue 3

of the MYBA Sales and Purchase Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and Western Med Terms for Charter coming into circulation, the fledgling association was already starting to make significant inroads within the industry. Adopted at first with some initial reticence by the industry, the MYBA MoA has nonetheless come a very long way since and, with the last formal revision in 2005, has become recognised as the established industry standard used widely throughout.

Future Proof Y   achtfolio Similarly, with the first MYBA Charter Agreement forms issued in 1988, the intention was to set out in plain English the operating terms, costs to charter, extra charges applicable and any unique requirements of the guests before the charter commenced. Signed by all concerned, the documentation was pioneering in its clarity and the way it reduced the potential for disagreement before, during and indeed after the charter having taken place.

YACHT MANAGEMENT

As a further aid to brokers, MYBAnet, the charter yacht database and booking tool first launched in 1998 was rolled out to members and subscribers shortly after. Subsequently, in November last year, MYBA members and subscribers now have access to Yachtfolio – a far more sophisticated, ‘future-proof’ business to business platform listing more than 1,400 fully crewed charter yachts with a minimum length of 20m. Furthermore, MYBA is currently developing Yachtfolio Sales to provide a similar tool for sales brokers with live testing and launch before the end of this 30th anniversary year.

Show Me The Show With working contracts now more adequately tailored to the needs of the market, MYBA administration could turn its attention towards more frequent yacht meetings. Owners, brokers and their peers could not only display but also share the cost of marketing yachts together, while attracting greater interest from prospective owners and clients. Initially held in San Remo, Italy, the International Yacht Charter Meetings came about in 1988. These were immediately supported by MYBA in collaboration with the American Yacht Charter Association. Having relocated to Genoa in 2001 and with the new name of the MYBA Charter Show, the show provides an unrivalled, week-long opportunity for pre-registered, qualified brokers and yachting professionals to evaluate luxury yachts for charter in an un-hurried and professional environment.

Benefits of Membership MYBA’s drive to raise ethical standards, improve quality and introduce due diligence started from day one and becoming a member is not about elitism or protectionism, but provides a chance for companies and individuals to demonstrate a level of commitment and professionalism potentially higher than that of a non-member. Existing within a largely unregulated industry – where brokers and yachting professionals can carry on their business without requiring formal qualifications – membership of MYBA is voluntary whereby, if successful, both the implied and tangible benefits of becoming a member speak for themselves and easily justify the modest subscription fees involved. In 1984 one of the founder members of MYBA was Camper & Nicholsons International Senior Broker Jean Marie Recamier who confirmed the original framework is still in place today, when he said: “Until we started MYBA none of the brokers were cooperating together with each one operating exclusively and using different

REFIT & REPAIR

LOOKING AT IMS SHIPYARD’S EXPANDING REFIT & REPAIR FACILITIES

Becoming the

BIGGEST A RENOWNED PLAYER IN THE YACHT REFIT AND REPAIR SECTOR FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS, IMS SHIPYARD IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A CONSIDERABLE EXPANSION. BY EARLY NEXT YEAR, THE TOULON-BASED YARD IS SET TO become the largest yacht repair yard in the Mediterranean accommodating bigger, deeper yachts while offering improved services for owners and crews. SuperYacht Industry’s Tom Scott looks at how IMS Shipyards is continuing its successful role as customer service base. WORDS BY TOM SCOTT

T

hings are going well for IMS shipyards. After starting off constructing aluminium boats in 1987, the yard decided to channel all its efforts into the refit and repair sector, which is still its primary activity. Today, IMS has found its niche as official customer service base for a number of internationally recognised yacht builders – notably Heesen, Couach and Palmer Johnson. Up to now, this function has always taken place at IMS’ present facilities – known as IMS 300.

IMS Yards.indd 51

There comes a time, however, when an expanding company’s existing facilities are just not big enough. For IMS, that time is now: “In our 25 year history, a lot has evolved. Back then yachts were 25m long,” says Aurélien Deberdt, Sales and Technical Manager at IMS Shipyards. “Now they are more than 100m.” The yard’s 15 slots have a 4m draught, which can receive yachts of around 55m in length. “This prevents us from getting larger yachts – we ran out of space, so we have developed a new company – an extension of the IMS trademark – called IMS 700.” The expanded facilities will have the capacity to accommodate 100 yachts up to 80m in length. “The extension will give us more space, better lifting capacity and a larger range of services for our customers,” continues Mr Deberdt.

REFIT & REPAIR

Space is in demand at IMS Shipyards current facilities.

Space Solution Presently under construction, the new IMS 700 site is located on the Saint-Mandrier Peninsula’s former naval air base just 5km from the existing IMS 300. On completion, the yard’s surface area and accommodation capacity will increase substantially – to a total of 130,000m2. IMS is constructing the 60,000m2 ground area with a ‘zero disposal’ principle in mind. This is of obvious environmental interest as it involves recovering and recycling the former naval base’s hard road surface materials. This central platform will accommodate four boat-sheds, with ceiling heights of up to 15m, capable of simultaneously housing three 50m yachts. The yard’s lifting capacity is also set to increase significantly with the installation of a 670t lifting system put into operation in September. Soon, the shortage of space will be a thing of the past; “We are on schedule to finish in March but from December, space is not going to be an issue,” informs Mr Deberdt. “The working platform will increase by five to 77,000m2 and our lifting capacity will double.”

Keep the Crew Happy “Another point we are working on is the crew friendly area,” says Mr Deberdt referring to the planned 500m2 crew quarters. He continues by pointing out the difficulties that yacht owners

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

IMS Yards.indd 53

and captains face in finding a decent overwintering location. “We will offer them a solution to be close to their living port, which is usually Cannes, St Tropez or Monaco. They will have the possibility to put their yacht inside one of the sheds to save the paint for a few months before the next season.” Feedback from owners has been very important in designing the quarters – many owners believe that ‘If my crew is happy, then my yacht is happy’. To this end, the crew quarters will include offices, a multimedia room, fitness areas and a terrace with a barbecue. “We are going to make it more comfortable for everybody,” stresses Mr Deberdt.

Ideal Facilities IMS 700 is not just about land-based activities and services – the yard is creating the Mediterranean’s largest refit and maintenance dedicated wet dock. Designed to accommodate 15 vessels up to 80m long, this 50,000m2 basin will be protected from the swell by a long floating breakwater. 40m long metal piles, totaling 2,000t of steel, will moor the breakwater and support a pontoon intended for receiving yachts and the hauling dock. The area’s 10m draught makes it ideal for repair and refit activities.

Winning Formula The expansion of IMS certainly does entail substantial change. Certain well-established practices, however, will endure. One such area of the business that is based on a successful ideal is the company’s philosophy of teamwork. “We really believe that the company is made of people,” explains Mr Deberdt. “It is like a family here – it is the people working here that have the technical knowledge.” The in-house team’s core skills are welding, painting, mechanics, piping and electrical duties. The existing team of 50 in-house employees is expected to more than double after completion of IMS 700. The IMS formula is clearly a successful one – with over 80 percent of business coming from returning customers. “We really take care of our customers,” he continues. “We have a dedicated project manager who deals with all aspects of the shipyard period, management of technical work and human resources – this gives a competitive advantage. And we have good relationships with them – so they keep coming back.”

Crestron’s 4K displays will be on show, demonstrating that even out at sea, you can still enjoy the highest level of quality technology. On the stand, visitors will be able to control the lighting, sound and shades via the Crestron TST-902 wireless touch screen. With this thin, stylish panel, users can also browse the internet, stream video and monitor the intercom system. “The Monaco Yacht Show is the ideal place to demonstrate our new integrated 4K solutions to the yachting community,” says Robin van Meeuwen, CEO of Crestron International. “Crestron technology transforms life on board with products that showcase excellent functionality and lifestyle benefits.” i. www.crestron.eu

YachtCloud’s CrewBoard is a digital version of the traditional presence board for yachts. The product not only shows who is on board in a graphically appealing user interface, but it also provides additional safety and productivity features. Integration with the onboard security system and automated export make CrewBoard a unique and valuable system on board. CrewBoard can run on any device that has a modern web-browser and is not limited to an amount of devices. Multiple locations can be outfitted with a touch-panel for signing in and out. In case of an emergency the touch panel device has a special button, which will download the current list of persons that are on/off board. The touch-panel can then be taken and used for security matters without being connected to the network anymore. i. www.yachtcloud.eu

Virtual Look Under the Hood Oculus Technologies have taken their experience in the field of interactive onboard infotainment to a new and more in-depth technical level. Their latest software development offers a virtual and realtime look in to the key technology that supports and runs the vessel with their new Engine Room App. The virtual onboard engine room is designed to provide owners and their guests with an experience and insight. It shows a 3D model of the entire engine room with realtime moving parts, info-graphics videos and animations. The user is able to select the propulsion systems, water purification, power distribution, structural parts and more to explore them in detail through a series graphical interfaces inspired by those seen in movies such as Iron Man and Minority Report. i. www.oculustechnologies.nl

Extended Service Base for MAN

Wiltec’s self-adhesive anti-dustmat protects spray booths, clean rooms, warehouses and office spaces from dust, dirt and bacteria. The advantages of the anti-dustmat are the fact that dirt and dust from the outside sticks on the antidustmat and visitors and employees can easily move from room without having to change. The mat comprises 30 disposable adhesive layers. When the upper adhesive layer is contaminated, it can be easily removed to reveal the next clean adhesive. i. www.wiltec.nl

The Italian importer of MAN engines and operator of the MAN service base for marine engines, Ranieri Tonissi, moved to its new headquarters in Genoa in June. Yachting and commercial customers will benefit not only from the prestigious new premises but also from the location directly on the deepwater pier. The move from Bolzanetto directly into the harbour at Genoa gives Ranieri Tonissi some 3,000m2 in space for the workshop, storage and administration. Located directly on the deepwater pier, the new company headquarters not only offer short distances but also provide service facilities for vessels of up to 40m in length – from yachts to working boats. i. www.tonissi.com

WORD ON THE SEA

SYI’s John Gauldie

Massimo Perotti During the Genoa International Boat Show, the city’s Galata Museo del Mare features a new exhibition of artists including Marco Lodola (pictured).

The genoa supremacy “We have been asked to accomplish a revolution and this is what we are doing,” says
Massimo Perotti, commenting on the 54th Genoa International Boat Show from 1-6 October. As well as the Chairman of UCINA – Confindustria Nautica and a member of the Board of Saloni Nautici (the company organising the show and associated with UCINA), Mr Perotti is head of superyacht builder Sanlorenzo. “We wish to regain our role as world leaders, because Genoa is Europe and because it is on the sea and has a unique exhibition tradition. We cannot deny that we have lost this supremacy, but we cannot remain passive.” If the aim is to restore the Genoa International Boat Show to its former glory, Mr Perotti confirms he is satisfied with the results achieved so far. “There is great excitement and work is proceeding according to the scheduled 3-year development plan.” The renewed show will feature an area dedicated exclusively to superyachts under the Super Made in Italy brand. “This new brand will unite all great Italian yachts at the Genoa Boat Show,” Mr Perotti continued. “[The project] will help us overcome the individualist

logic that is typical of our Italian character. We are more creative and original than anybody else and Italian design is a point of reference for people all over the world, just as the quality of our components is. This leadership must be highlighted and made known via the Boat Show.” While work continues for the renewed October show, the organisers have released details of a new event to be held next spring – a “sea week” which aims to attract the many people visiting Italy for Expo 2015 in Milan. Using the entire city of Genoa and its three ports, the week will spotlight the synergies between the boating industry, design, art, sport, fashion, and lifestyle, as well as the quality of Italian-made products. Further details on the event will be communicated in October during the Genoa International Boat Show.

We are more creative and original than anybody else.
