REMEMBERING THE FALLEN BY CHALLENGING THE LIVING Texas Army cadets and the Travis Manion Foundation host the first 9/11 Heroes Run in Austin On September 16th 2012, Texas Army ROTC partnered with the Travis Manion Foundation to host the first annual 9/11 Heroes Run in Austin at Camp Mabry. The 9/11 Heroes Run is a 5k race and fun run created by the Travis Manion Foundation to honor and remember the sacrifices of all of the heroes of September 11th to include veterans, first responders, civilians, and military personnel. The Foundation calls for runners to honor the fallen by challenging the living, which correlates with the theme of selfless service Texas Army strives to instill in cadets.
Texas Army ROTC plans to hold the event annually in partnership with the Travis Manion Foundation.

Over 150 runners took part with the support of spectators and many volunteers despite rainy weather. Among the contestants were Texas Army’s own 10-Miler and Sandhurst teams. Cadet Christopher Jensen of the 10-Miler team finished with the best overall time while the Sandhurst team completed the 5k with 35 pound ruck sacks. Ultimately, 50% of the proceeds from the race went to Texas Army ROTC and the other 50% to the Travis Manion Foundation. In addition, $500 was donated to the Museum at Camp Mabry for their generosity in providing the race venue and the training site for weekly ROTC leadership labs.

COMMEMORATING HONOR
Cadets plan and execute the University of Texas at Austin’s annual Veteran’s Day cere On 12 November 2012 members of all three University of Texas ROTC programs; the Army, Air Force, and Navy, joined together along with honored guests, distinguished faculty and staff to pay tribute to the veterans of all wars. The event was held at the base of the American and Prisoner of War Flag located in the Main Mall.
The ceremony began with the formations being called to attention by the commander of troops, c/2LT Haungs for the singing of the National Anthem. Formations were lead by their commanders; the Air Force by c/Col Nguyen, the Navy by c/MIDN Shirley and the Army by c/CPT Koubenec. After guests were seated the Master of

emony Ceremonies, c/SSG Walker welcomed Mayor Lee Leffingwell to the podium. All there listened attentively as the Mayor, also a University of Texas alumni and veteran, shared his speech. After Mayor Leffingwell closed his remarks the flag detailed was cued to begin the raising and lowering of the lo flags.
Formations saluted as Retreat played and the flags were lowered. The flag detailed was a joint service effort lead by Army cadet Flores. Others in the detail include army cadet Wisniewski, Navy cadets Stoop and Congahuen and Air Force cadets Retana and Sheamer.
TAILGATING WITH HEROES Texas Army hosts Veterans’ Day tailgate with Wounded Warriors Texas Army ROTC cadets, family, friends, and alumni came together this past Saturday for a Veterans’ Day/Caissons tailgate prior to UT’s victory against Iowa State. At the tailgate cadets were able to relax, eat, and socialize with veterans and alumni to gain insight on life after commissioning. Also at the tailgate were Wounded Warriors from Fort Sam Houston. These heroes provided cadets with a powerful example of the standards they will soon be expected to uphold as officers in the United States Army. BRINGING TEXAS TO UTAH Texas Army’s Sandhurst qualifier team travels to Utah Each year, Texas Army ROTC competes in the Ranger Challenge competition with the hope of qualifying for the national Sandhurst Competition at West Point. Last year, after taking 1st place at the regional competition in Texas, Texas Army was selected by 5th Brigade to compete at West Point. This year, the qualifier was held at Utah’s Camp Williams among 22 other teams.
The competition included a 10k road march, rope bridge, first aid and CASEVAC, weapons reassembly and disassembly, and river crossing. Numerous land navigation points were interspersed throughout the course’s total distance of over 12 miles and elevation changes exceeding 6,000 feet. The qualifier proved to be their most competitive yet.
Although Brigham Young University was selected to attend the competition at West Point, Texas Army ROTC has already adapted its training regimen to put it on par with next year’s best teams.

RUNNING THE CAPITAL Texas Army cadets compete in the 2012 Army Ten-Miler In fall 2012, Texas Army sent 9 cadets to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Army 10-Miler alongside athletes and Soldiers from around the world, including other ROTC battalions and Army Division teams like the 101st and 82nd.
In addition to running the race, the cadets participated in a tour of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a White House Gardens tour, a backstage tour of the National Capitol and a tour of the Pentagon.
