Best of Me...Katie Taylor Katie, from Ramsey, is studying for a PhD at the University of Idaho, which she first attended as the Department of Education and Children’s Ella Olesen scholar. The 24-year-old sports science graduate has just been elected to the American College of Sports Medicine as a student representative. She describes herself as ‘Manx to the max’ and says: ‘I am fun, outgoing, and motivated with a little of the traa-dy-liooar attitude to remind me of my roots.’ Best meal (cooked by you or by another): Has to be anything cooked by mum! Definitely missing a good old Sunday roast out here in the States. Best outfit or single piece of clothing: I couldn’t be without my onesie, especially in the Idaho winters.

Best memory: Being stood in Marks & Spencer when I received a phone call to say I had been awarded the Ella Olesen scholarship. My mum then proceeded to announce it to anyone who spoke to her. It was an extremely proud moment. Best way to spend the day: My ideal day would involve a game of hockey with Ramsey Hockey Club, followed by dancing with Ny Fennee. There is nothing better than spending time with friends and being active.

Best advice: That everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t have believed that this is where I would be today when I got my A-level exams results, but it made me more determined to achieve what I had always dreamt of. My philosophy is that if you can dream it, with motivation and determination you can achieve it! Best place in the Isle of Man: Of course I am biased, but it has to be Ramsey. I love the community spirit and what the town has to offer for me, especially all the different sport and recreation activities.

Soundcheck is still hitting the right note Music has always been an outlet for the youth – disaffected and otherwise and in the Isle of Man there is a scheme that gives young people with a shared passion the opportunity to learn from each other, record their music and get onto the stage. Soundcheck – a scheme run by the Department of Education and Children’s youth service - is in its 16th year, operating in youth centres around the Island and putting young performers on the stage at venues ranging from the Villa Marina to the open air festival Mannifest. And the embodiment of everything that Soundcheck stands for is Jenni Smith, now 19, who came to the island when she was younger and not surprisingly went through feelings of isolation. She found Soundcheck and made the most of the opportunities it gave to develop her musical talents. Now she is an apprentice youth worker with the DEC and is one of the driving forces behind the continued success. Jenni said: ‘There are a lot of people who are very skill out there

g n i om

and they have got to the point where they can play songs. They are really good at it, but they can’t take it further. ‘Young people can’t play in pubs and that is where the gigs are. ‘Soundcheck gives them the practice space and gets them the gigs.’ She added: ‘My mum didn’t like our band practising in the dining room and there will be a lot of other people in the same boat!’ As well as practice space and the opportunity to play before live audiences, Soundcheck also gives young musicians the chance to

Music makers: Paul Cooper, left, Jenni Smith and Dave Hattersley

record and it can supply instruments and PA equipment. As it is a youth service project, there is also plenty of support for youngsters – about music or anything else. Jenni said one of the major advantages was that music could give a common bond to different young people who would otherwise not find any common ground. ‘It is different from school. You have all the cliques in school and bullying going on,’ she said. ‘In Soundcheck you see people mixing who you wouldn’t normally see together. ‘People who wouldn’t normally be interested come and say hello and stick up for each other if someone else is having a go. It really does bring people together.’ Youth worker Dave Hattersley said Soundcheck had grown over the years and was a huge success story for the service. ‘It gives everyone confidence and more self esteem,’ he said. A number of young people who have been part of Soundcheck have since gone on to study music subjects at higher education level. Jenni’s face, along with that of

n o so

youth worker Paul Cooper, may already be familiar. They, along with Georgia Cooper, are in the band Full Moon Fallout, which last year released the TT song Limitless. The band has since been joined by Krysia Fitzpatrick. Paul revealed to the Manx Advertiser that Soundcheck is planning a showcase gig in the grounds of Castle Rushen in July. He said the role of the youth worker at Soundcheck, just as in other areas of the youth service, was to give support to the young people, both in music and in life. ‘We are here to listen,’ he said. ‘We don’t judge, we listen.’ Soundcheck is based at the Youth Arts Centre in Kensington Road, Douglas, and holds sessions in Douglas and Castletown on Mondays, Douglas on Tuesdays, Peel and Ramsey on Wednesdays and recodrding sessions (by arrangement) in Douglas on Thursdays, The age range for those taking part is 14-19 and sessions are £2. Paul Speller

How the government can be fair game There was great excitement at the Speller workstation last week when, into my inbox, arrived the latest chart depicting membership of the Isle of Man Government departments. As any journalist in the Isle of Man will attest, this is a highlight in the calendar and printers in newsrooms across the isle are jammed as scribes rush to put their chart into hard copy format so they can place it on a wall next to their One Direction posters. I have suggested to the Manx Government that it teams up with Panini and turns this chart, which contains pictures of all the delightful members of government, into a sticker album. What fun could we all have declaring ‘got’, ‘not got’ and ‘need’ on the various politicians. Although I’m not sure for whom we would say ‘need’. As of yet, I have not heard back on my

proposal. It’s a little like my plan for Manx Roundabout Top Trumps – not a whisper from the Department of Infrastructure. Admittedly, this could be because I’ve never told them of my idea. So, if you are reading this Mr Cretney, please pay attention. Manx Roundabout Top Trumps is the future of card games and could be tied in with the opportunity to emboss the back of the playing cards with road safety messages (although nothing about speed limits, of course). The categories of competition on the other side are plentiful: • Average waiting time before motorist enters roundabout. • Distance from nearest other roundabout. • Percentage of people who believe a crossroads or set of traffic lights would have worked better. • Number of swear words provoked.

Height of central area of roundabout. • Life expectancy of roundabout before a new traffic management scheme becomes flavour of the month. I am hopeful that a consultation process will be instigated to assess the viability of Manx Roundabout Top Trumps and that perhaps a Council of Ministers working party can be established to progress the idea.

If I’m honest, this is just a stepping stone to bigger plans. If I can get support for this scheme I can move on to the next concept. This next one is big and could utilise the online gaming sector. Anyone for Bailout Bingo?

Artists make the grade with exhibition THE ISLE OF MAN

An exciting and eclectic mix of work from five local artists goes on display in the Strand Shopping Centre, Douglas, next week. The Five Ways exhibition features the work of students graduating from Isle of Man College with a BA in fine art. The students have already completed a two year Higher National Diploma Course and the extra third year extended the qualification to degree level, validated by Liverpool John Moore University. Helen Fox, programme manager for art, design and media at Isle of Man College, said: ‘This will be our third cohort of students completing the BA Hons fine art degree programme with 17 students now having graduated over the three years. ‘Each time the exhibitions show the new art produced is at the forefront of contemporary practice, each student having tested themselves and in many cases overcoming quite phenomenal personal challenges.’ The exhibition, sponsored by Isle of Man Bank, gets under way on May 24 and runs until June 8. It features work from contemporary artist Gary Bennett, whose experiences in the military and of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles provide the narrative for his work; Pauline Berrie, who uses the marine environment as her inspiration; pop culture follower Jade Boylan (whose work is pictured) who explores the juxtaposition between childhood nostalgia and adulthood reality; Karl Garrett, who presents his own poetry on a variety of objects; and Jennifer Wood, whose work is based mainly on feminism and the oppression of women in the 21st century. CELEBRATING 80 YEARS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Al Murray brings his ‘dribbling idiot’ to the Villa Pub Landlord creator Al Murray is set to make a triumphant return to the Isle of Man on Friday, as he brings his “The Only Way is Epic” tour to the Villa Marina. Described by The Times as the ‘most consistently exciting live comedian’, his quick-witted advice and opinion, however skewed in the Pub Landlord persona, has proved to be a massive hit over the years. He has taken the new tour out on the road this year and still gets a huge rush from the live performances. ‘What I love is that it's different every night,’ he said. ‘I want the audience to feel that tonight's the night and unlike any other show. ‘They know that they are getting a 100 per cent effort from me, rather than feeling that it's just another routine evening. ‘I never think how can I fill the show? That's never a problem. ‘If I ever got stuck and had to resort to greatest hits, I would

stop performing live. But that shows no sign of happening.’ The Pub Landlord, while perhaps frighteningly realistic, is not actually a real person. He is, of course, a comedy creation by Al. The character has become famous for his British spirit and his peculiar outlook on the world. Al said: ‘I can feed anything into the character now. I know him so well that I know what he thinks about any subject.’ A lot of what is said is nonsense, but is delivered with the certainty of someone who does not believe he can be contradicted – although that is what he does to himself. ‘I have no issue with nonsense,’ Al explained. ‘The Landlord has to defeat himself. He always manages to tie himself in knots

with his arguments. ‘Some people say the act is rabble-rousing and think audiences take it at face value. But he is a dribbling, selfcontradictory idiot, so I don't mind if people take that at face value.’ However, occasionally there are people who take the Pub Landlord’s views seriously. ‘There are still one or two who don't get it. You wonder what on earth are they agreeing with – all those mental hallucinations and contradictions? But if they want to agree with it, good luck to them!’ The new show’s theme of Broken Britain reflects a narrative arguing ‘simultaneously that this is the greatest country in the world and that we're rubbish’. He added: ‘The idea of us being rubbish doesn't seem to have gone away. Even the Olympics haven’t managed to wipe out the idea that we’re not very good at things.’ Of course, what the Pub Landlord makes of the Isle of Man, where he last performed in 2010, remains to be seen. Are we as broken as Britain? He is sure to have a thought or two to offer. Al Murray’s The Only Way is Epic show is at the Villa Marina, Douglas, on Friday (May 17) at 7.30pm. Ramsey Golf Club in the north of the Island was designed by James Braid in 1929 was listed by Golf Monthly as one of the “100 Hidden Gems” in the UK in 2011. The course is set on mainly flat ground, making it easy on the legs. There are many

demanding holes which provides a challenge for all golfers – especially the first hole where you tee off into the prevailing wind with a stream cutting across the fairway giving a challenging hazard right from the word go! There is a well-stocked pro-shop and the clubhouse offers good value meals and stunning views overlooking the 18th green. Peel Golf Club is a picturesque course situated on the west coast was established in 1895 and provides a challenging test of golf to all who play it. The longest hole is the par 5 seventh but perhaps the most daunting is the par four dog-leg right eleventh. This hole demands a long and accurate tee shot over a long carry of gorse bushes, to set up a mid-iron second to the green. The club has a well-stocked pro-shop owned by Manx Discount Golf Shops Ltd and the clubhouse is an ideal setting to relax over a drink, or something to eat with a full bar menu whilst watching players approach the 18th green and set off down the 1st. Douglas Golf Club in the east of the Island offers a variety of challenging holes from the par three 17th which is an elevated tee shot to a green some 70 feet below and the superb 322 yard par four second hole which requires a pinpoint first shot before a difficult second shot into a closely guarded green. The course was designed by Dr Alexander MacKenzie who also designed some of the world’s most challenging courses including Augusta National in Atlanta, Georgia and Australia’s Royal Melbourne. Again there is an excellent fully-stocked Manx Discount Golf Shops pro-shop managed by Mike Vipond where you will always find excellent value and service. The clubhouse offers a wide choice of food and drinks from an elevated area overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green.
