Finance Company Build Big To Help Community’s Young Earlier this summer more than 300 staff from Santander Consumer Finance beat the British weather as they volunteered their time to a building project based at Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre on the Ashdown Forest to improve facilities for the community youth organisation – London Youth. By Jacob White

T

he Hindleap Project started in early 2017 when a committee of 20 employees was formed. For the actual build itself in June which took place over seven days, more than 300 members of Santander Group staff took part – including colleagues from PSA Finance, Hyundai Capital and Santander Bank. Santander Consumer Finance is focused on staff development and one of the ways it has found enables employees to be the best that they can possibly be is to take part in local community projects, and this is something the organisation does as a group as part of the Santander is You week. Every year, Santander Consumer Finance takes part in a community project known as The Big Build and this year, London Youth at Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre was chosen by a panel of judges to be charity for staff to undertake a large project, and soon a Big Build committee sprang into action. A Group wide communication was issued to all staff inviting them to take part, and the response was incredible. Many new employees stepped forward to take part as well as staff who had taken part in years gone by. Staff came from across the UK with some flying down from Scotland to volunteer. Fiona Woodhouse, from Santander Consumer, said: “Everyone was just amazing. Everyone worked tirelessly to make the project a success with the aim of providing two highly interactive facilities for the 10,500 young people who visit Hindleap Warren each year.” The weather proved to be the biggest challenge facing the volunteers – on the first day of the build, the rain poured down. However, staff made the decision to carry on regardless, they were not going to be defeated. Days later, the sun came out and it became very hot, a contrast to a few days before. This was the first time Santander Consumer Finance had taken on board a project of this scale. There were effectively two projects running sideby-side at Hindleap Warren – obstacle course and high ropes - and they were both outdoors and at the mercy of the elements.

On this project there was a focus on providing each volunteer with the opportunity to both start and finish a set task daily. The nature of this project allowed volunteers to do this with different types of climbing obstacles being constructed and thus helping volunteer see the value in their efforts. Speaking about the project, Fiona said: “Other than physical aches and pains, there was a sense of well-being and one of personal achievement. Many volunteers had never taken part in anything like this before and to find out that they could actually create something each day was so rewarding. Some even wanted to put their names down for our next Big Build in 2018!” Tony Smith, head of Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre, added: “We are thrilled with our new obstacle course and high ropes circuit, achieved with the help of Santander Consumer Finance. All of our 10,500 young visitors each year will be able to enjoy these activities, whatever their ability.”

Winnie The Pooh

Ashdown Forest’s World Famous Bear Over the years, the honey-loving bear has proved to be a success for Disney, becoming one of its most popular franchises. The cute, loveable bear and friends have starred in a series of animated productions and have provided countless merchandising opportunities for the corporation.

A

By Rachel Whitlam

s many of us will know, the real Pooh Bear story starts much closer to home on the Ashdown Forest - the stories were written by the English writer, A.A Milne who got the idea from a teddy that was owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne. The teddy was bought from Harrods in June 1921 by Daphne, the author’s wife, and was initially named Edward Bear but later renamed after a Canadian black bear that Christopher Robin saw at London Zoo - the black bear had been purchased as a cub from a hunter. He was bought by a Canadian Lieutenant who decided to name the bear Winnie after his adopted hometown of Winnipeg whilst Pooh is believed to be a swan the Milne family encountered while on holiday. A.A Milne’s inspiration for the young Christopher Robin character was his own son, who

appeared along with some of his other toys, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga and Roo. Londoner, Milne bought Cotchford Farmhouse near Hartfield as a holiday home for his family in 1925. He would head out to the house with his family and a nanny on Saturday morning, returning to London every Monday afternoon. They visited for a month in the Spring and two months in the Summer. The house had far reaching views over the Ashdown Forest and to the River Medway. From the garden, a bare hilltop could be seen in the distance, on top of it stood a distinctive clump of pines, which was Gill’s Lap, known as Galleon’s Leap in the book. During interviews, Christopher Milne recalled regular expeditions instigated by his father to count the trees. Apparently no one ever managed to count the same number leading to the naming of The Enchanted Place.

Did you know? Winnie the Pooh has inspired a variety of philosophical texts including – The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet, which set out to explore Taoism, The Pooh Perplex and Postmodern Pooh, Pooh and the philosophers. The musician, Kenny Loggins of Footloose fame, wrote the song, House at Pooh Corner, which later featured on his album Return to Pooh Corner in 1991. There is a Punk Metal band in Estonia called Winny Puhh. The Pooh stories have been translated in more than 46 languages including a Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu which was published in 1958 and became the only Latin book to appear on The New York Times Best Seller list..

We hope you enjoyed the first part of our celebration of Winnie The Pooh – Ashdown Forest’s World Famous Bear. Next month, we will bring you the second part, including how to play Pooh sticks!

The twiddlemuffs are one part of the hospital’s approach to ensuring that people with dementia or memory loss are cared for with dignity and compassion. Jo Davis, dementia lead and a senior theatre nurse, at the Queen Victoria Hospital, said: “We’ve been delighted with the response to our request for twiddlemuffs, meaning that each of our patients with dementia can have their own one to take home with them at the end of their hospital stay. They’re a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for people who need them and have definitely helped patients feel calmer about being in an unfamiliar place. Teach Them About Who They Are When was the last time you spoke to the kids about your grandparents or other ancestors? Chances are with how busy everyday life is, it might not have happened yet. Use a lazy summer’s day to tell them all about who they are and the people who have shaped your family. You could even start to create a family tree!

Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.

Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating

They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,

Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Call us today on 01342 718348 for more details on how we can help you.

A Small Joint Replacement that makes a Big Difference

By Oliver Harley, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon MBBS, BSc, MBA, FRCSEd(Plastic Surgery)

D

id you know that it is possible to do joint replacements for fingers? You probably know at least one person who has had a hip or a knee replacement for arthritis. Similar technology, on a much smaller scale, is available for finger joints which become painful as a result of arthritis. The hands are a very common place to get arthritis due to them consisting of 27 bones each separated with cartilage. The most frequently affected joints are those in the fingers. However, a finger joint replacement is much less common than hip and knee replacements due to the miniature size of the of finger joints. Despite this, the pay off for a patient suffering from severe arthritis can make this a very worthwhile option for treatment. There are three joints in each finger - the joint at the base of the finger, the joint in the middle of the finger, the joint closest to the fingertip. Arthritis can affect any of these three joints, it can affect a single joint on a single finger or several joints and fingers. It will cause various combinations of pain, deformity and loss of movement. This pain and loss of movement can have a serious impact on everyday life and make simple tasks such as making a cup of tea or writing very difficult. Arthritis is typically easy to diagnose based on the symptoms and the appearance of the finger. X-rays help to confirm the diagnosis. Arthritis pain is often noted for the first time after a minor knock or sprain which takes longer than expected to settle down. Before considering surgery painful finger joints may respond to painkillers applied as creams or taken by mouth. Pain killing injections (steroids) may be given directly into joints in clinic when you see a hand specialist at The McIndoe Centre or The Horder Centre. If pain persists despite the use of painkillers it may be time to think about an operation which offers long term pain relief in at least 90% of cases. The decision to get a finger joint replacement is largely down to the level of pain caused and how much this impacts on everyday life.

There are two types of operation which are helpful for arthritic fingers: Fusing the joint (arthrodesis) or joint replacement (arthroplasty). These are day case operations which can usually be done by ‘awake surgery’ using local anaesthetic. The artificial joint is made of silicon plastic is similar to a miniature artificial knee joint in appearance. Some patients will have more than one finger joint replacement in a single operation. A small incision is made in the finger and the damaged joint is removed. The artificial joint is inserted and cemented into place. It functions in the same way as a healthy joint, a bit like a hinge on a door, although, the movement is typically about half the range in a healthy joint. Alternatively, fusing the joint means that it is set in a fixed position and no further movement is possible. Both types of operation reliably remove the pain from arthritis but of course have different results regarding the freedom of movement in the hand. After surgery, some hand physiotherapy is necessary for several weeks and protective splints are often required during this period but typically these may be removed at times to do light activities as well as physiotherapy exercises. After about 8-10 weeks patients should be able to resume usual activities including golf, tennis and gardening, for example. Mr Oliver Harley is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in both cosmetic and hand surgery. He has clinics at The Horder Centre in Crowborough (hands) and at The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead. How Can An Osteopath Help Your Sporting Life?

Whether you are an athlete or cricketer drawing the season to a close, or a footballer or rugby player gearing up for the new season, how can an osteopath help make sure that you are match-fit and ready to go? Also, what can they do to help you post-match to make sure you feel a sense of wellbeing? By Jacob White

P

laying sport and doing regular exercise is good for your health, but sometimes sport can result in injuries caused by a fall or heavy blow, not warming up properly, using inappropriate equipment or poor technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of the body can be injured including the muscles, bones, joints and tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The most commonly affected areas vulnerable to both summer and winter sports injuries are the ankles and the knees. What Is Osteopathy And How Can Osteopaths Help? Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging muscles and joints based on the principle that health and wellbeing is based on bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues working together. An osteopath’s aim is to: • Increase the mobility of joints • Relieve muscle tension • Enhance blood supply to tissue • Help the body heal An osteopath can help with: • Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Arthritis • Problems with the pelvis, hips and legs

26

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

Does osteopathy work? Many patients argue that it does work and it is especially effective in treating persistent lower back pain and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the treatment for those with the condition. Who can treat me in osteopathy? Osteopathy is not widely available on the NHS but your GP should be able to tell you whether it is available in your area but most patients pay for osteopathy treatment privately with treatment costs varying for different sessions. You do not need to be referred by your GP to see a private osteopath, a top tip is that most private health insurers provide cover for osteopathic treatment but do see your policy for more details. Importantly, when you are looking for an osteopath, only practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) are allowed to practise as osteopaths or call themselves osteopaths.

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.

We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

What To Do If You Did Not Make The Grade The exams have been sat and the results are in. After weeks of exams, months of revision and years of studying the hard work is over but the tough choices about the future are only just beginning and those choices can become a lot tougher if you did not get the exam results you were hoping for but we a handy guide to what your next steps should be if your exam results are more “argh!” than A*. By Jacob White

F

or those who have just received their GCSE exam results and fallen short of expectations or the necessary grades needed to gain entry into a chosen school sixth form or further education college: Talk To Your Teachers About Re-marking If your grades are not what you expected and you think there is a mistake, speak to your teachers about re-marking. They can advise you on whether it is the right thing to do – you will need to make a re-marking request through your school. There is a charge for re-marking, this is refunded if your grades are changed, but remember your grades could go down as well as up. If you have requested that your exams are re-marked, some sixth forms and colleges might allow you to start your studies pending the outcome of your request – call them and explain the situation as soon as possible. Talk To Your Sixth Form Or College If you did not get the grades needed, they might still be able to accept you or they may offer you a place on a different course at their institution. They may also be in the position to recommend other local colleges elsewhere which have entry requirements that would suit your exam results better. Re-sit Your GCSEs While it might be difficult to come to terms with doing the work you have already completed, if you need certain grades to get the job or university place you want, your best option could be to re-sit your GCSEs. This does not have to mean re-doing them in school – you can take online GCSE courses that will allow you to fit them around work, A Levels, or other commitments.

There are online GCSE courses, but bear in mind some have strict deadlines just like at school. If you are planning on working or taking A Levels at the same time as studying for GCSEs, it is best to find a flexible course with no deadlines. This allows you to work at your own pace, making sure you will not get overwhelmed. Re-doing your exams will demonstrate dedication, and this can be beneficial in future applications. However, if you have a particular university or course in mind, you should check that they will accept re-sits, and if the entry requirements are higher when re-sits are involved. Look At Vocational Courses If you found your exams particularly difficult, it could be that an academic career is not for you. Think about taking a vocational or professional qualification which could suit you better - it will prepare you for work in a more practical way. There will be some hands-on learning as well as some time studying. There are vocational courses both online and available at colleges which offer accredited professional qualifications in fields including PR, accounting, marketing and management. Think About An Apprenticeship Rewarding and well-paid careers can come out of apprenticeships – they allow you to study for your qualification while gaining practical experience working in your chosen industry. Typically, you work four days and study one. Some require certain grades at GCSE, check which apprenticeships you are eligible for. For more information, visit: www.gov.uk/topic/ further-education-skills/apprenticeships

With many possibilities at your fingertips, missing out on your expected GCSE grades does not have to be a disaster. Whether you re-sit your exams to get back on track, or take a new route, you are bound to find something that suits you and your abilities, results day is the beginning of future you, not the end.

GARDENS

Designing A Child-Friendly Garden For children the summer holidays and the garden go hand-in-hand – a great place for smashing balls around, running about with the dog, or having friends round for fun and games. However, this can be at odds with the view of a garden to parents or grandparents, so, what can you do to help this? By Jacob White

F

or most families, the first area of priority is somewhere to relax, eat or entertain outside - a sitting area where you can put out garden furniture and set up the barbecue is the answer, screened off with a low hedge, or some heavy containers, filled with easy-going plants – herbs are a good choice. Most people make their seating area close to the house, usually right outside patio doors where it is convenient but when the back of the house is in shade for most of the day, it is often better to put the seating area further down the garden, where it catches the sun for the longest amount of time. Think about a dedicated play area which relieves the adult garden of a lot of wear and tear. If you are looking to mark out sports pitches or place climbing frames or a playhouse use a ground surface with hard-wearing rye-grass or bark chippings. A lock-up garden chest is a good idea for garden toys. To prevent balls, dogs or small children in neighbours’ gardens, plant banks of shrubs around boundaries. Choose hardy varieties such forsythia or philadelphus, avoiding prickly ones such as berberis or pyracantha. Other ideas include climbers such as honeysuckle or thornless blackberry. The adult area of the garden is where you can house the more delicate features such as perennial flowerbeds, container garden, raised flowerbeds, greenhouse or decorative vegetable patch. These are best safely separated from the places children play by a soft barrier that is ball and bike proof!

RH Uncovered

A row of fruit trees, a hedge or an ornamental tree and shrub border makes an attractive and at the same time, practical divider. Alternatively, use ornamental trellis with climbers. If limited for space, a row of woven hazel or heather panels with an arch through into your next area does the trick! A child-friendly garden does not have to remain the same, keep it under review. As the children grow older, you might like to replace the play area and introduce an area for them to find a quiet space for them to complete their homework or meet friends in a relaxed and safe environment.

Play It Safe!

A good place to position a play area is the far end of the garden, but depending on the age of the children you might like the area closer to keep an eye on them. Remember, for their safety to keep gates locked and check for hazards including poisonous plants or garden tools and chemicals. One of the biggest dangers is the much-loved garden pond, however shallow – a toddler can easily fall in.

HOMES

How To Create The Perfect Guest Room The summer holidays are here and the number of guests passing through the home is up, but just how do you create the perfect guest room? Here are some ideas to make your guest feel at home! By Jacob White

W

hether you are hosting friends, your mother-in-law or your parents are spending the summer holidays with you to help with childcare, or if it is your children returning home from university for the summer, what simple additions can you make to a spare room make sure it has a wow factor? Bags of Books One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else’s home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have wall-shelving or a bookcase, stock with a variety of good quality reading that appeals to all tastes. Do not forget to add some bright bedside lamps or reading lights! Case Closed Add a fold-up luggage stand, this hotel-inspired touch saves guests from having to squat on the floor to rifle through their suitcases for items. Make sure it is accessible and ready at the foot of the bed. Accessorise Whether you put them in the bathroom or in the bedroom, little extras make guests feel special. Taking more inspiration from hotel visits - include toiletries and niceties in case of forgotten items such as mini toothpaste, an extra toothbrush, emery boards and small bottles of hand lotion.

48

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Pillow Delight Some like them flat, some like them fluffy. Keep a range of pillows ready to satisfy guests’ individual tastes and do not forget to invest in tasteful blankets, you never know with the British weather! Get Hooked Your guests will not have a designated spot in your home to tuck away jumpers, purses and car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks on the backs of doors, or in easily accessible areas of their guest room. Remember to have plenty of coat hangers available for outdoor clothes. Say It With Flowers There is nothing as welcoming as freshly cut flowers, keep the arrangement simple though. Stick a few cut blooms from your garden in a jug for a fresh

@RHUncovered

and vibrant welcome but try to avoid flowers with overpowering scents that can lead to headaches. Do not forget about guests with allergies! Right On Time Ensure that guests do not miss a planned activity, or breakfast by placing a small clock in their room, whether just for them to keep time, or for them to set the alarm for an early morning wake-up call. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall… Hang a mirror, large or small in the room to provide the perfect spot for your guest to comb their hair, touch up makeup or put on jewellery. If space allows, a long dressing mirror is an even better addition for guests who have a sense of style and want to look tip-tip from head to toe this summer.

Do you do extensions? ‘Loft Property’…… We were feeling very pleased with ourselves when we came up with our name! We had been running a building company for years but thought we would look to make the most of the increasing interest in extending upwards. It can be tricky during telephone calls when we are often mistaken for somebody calling about lost property, however, it has generally been very successful.

Here is an example of one of our extensions, some nice before and after photographs, showing a great transformation. This is a double extension, built to create a larger kitchen/diner area and an additional upper bedroom and bathroom. The end result externally is very sympathetic to the original house. An oak porch was added to give character.

Despite our name, our work is a fairly even 50-50 split between lofts and extensions or renovations. Prospective clients so often ask us, “do you do extensions?”, that we thought we would take the opportunity to say to our lovely RH readers… …“yes we do!” . So……if you are interested in extending your property in any direction…. call us for a friendly informal no obligation chat…. Jennie Symes Director

Internally, the living space is transformed and there are now two good sized rooms on the ground floor to accommodate family life. We are in the process of building a new website and I can’t wait to show you the numerous before and after shots which showcase the fantastic and varied work our teams carry out.

Please call us or visit our website for friendly, creative advice. 01342 835 944 or

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Brian and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.

By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.

We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert. We have built up this beautiful relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit.
