Welcome to our September issue September is always a busy month, with children either starting, or returning to school. Others will be leaving education altogether and looking for that first step on the ladder to start their careers. We hope that we have all bases covered this month with our guide to choosing the right school for your children and details about the Crawley Jobs Fair on Friday 19th September. The Jobs Fair is a free event hosted by Henry Smith, MP for Crawley and is a great starting place for anyone looking to enter the world of work. We also met with local mum of three, Hayley Leitch from Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners show this month to talk to her about how this debilitating disorder has affected her life since she was just 4 years old, the treatment she has received and how she hopes her new book “Coming Clean - Living with OCD ” will help fellow sufferers. We’ve also packed in advice for planning your wedding, tips on creating a wet room in your home, dealing with evil weevils in the garden and of course tons of Community News, events and local clubs! See you next month! The team at RH Uncovered

Paws To Beat Blood Cancer If you are a regular reader, you may remember us featuring Crawley resident Jayne Archer’s plight to raise awareness and funds for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma research fund in her late husband – Mark Henry Archer’s name.
After three successful summer fundraising events (and a quiz to be held on Friday 5th Sep at Goffs Park Social Club), Jayne is now hosting another Paws To Beat Blood Cancer walk at Buchan Country Park on Sunday 21st September between 10am-3pm.
Crawley Down Village Fayre With over a thousand residents and visitors expected to celebrate Crawley Down’s 39th Village Fayre from 2pm on Saturday 6th September, we caught up with chairman of Crawley Down’s Resident Association, David Hook to uncover all you need to know about this year’s anticipated community event: “We will have over sixty stalls plus entertainment for all the family, including Punch and Judy and live music on the Green,” David explains. “Many of the stalls will be run by community groups, for example the Scouts will be running a café and burger bar and the social club is hosting a beer tent.

“The afternoon and evening Women’s Institutes, the Worth Horticultural Society, the Allotments and Gardens Association, the Guides and Brownies, the Haven Theatre Company, the Monday Club, All Saints Church, St Catherine’s Hospice, the British Legion, Friends of the Health Centre and many more will be also running stalls to raise the additional funds they need to continue.”
Not only is the fayre a feel good community afternoon out, but it also helps to benefit the village:

Registration for one dog and one owner is £10, with additional guests (aged 7+) £2 per person. For further details contact Jayne on: mhamemorialevent@btinternet.com
“Last year, through profits raised at the fayre, we donated funds towards the Christmas lights and towards a bus for the Monday Club who provide weekly lunches for the senior citizens of the locality. We also hold a Christmas Street Event which is free for all villagers and all children get a free gift from Santa,” Crawley Down resident, David continues. “The fayre does not just happen, it is the result of hours of hard work by our dedicated team of helpers and all of the village organisations who come along. It is a fabulous atmosphere on the day and wonderful to see so many people on the Village Green all having a great time socialising with each other. Come along and join in with us!”

Choosing The Right School There are a number of wonderful independent schools in the local area - but what should you be looking for when you visit? August's GCSE and A'Level results once again showed fantastic results for most independent schools - many of those in our local area.
The independent schools hold their main Open Days or Evenings through September, October and November (with more in the spring term), giving you and your child the chance to look around the classrooms and grounds, check out the facilities and talk to teachers and current pupils.
And it seems, despite tougher times financially, parents are still opting to send their child privately if they can manage it. Around 600,000 children are now educated at independent schools in the UK, with 13% of these in London alone. The smaller class sizes, good levels of discipline, great sports facilities and good academic success all appeal when it comes to choosing a school.
It's always a good idea to listen to the head teacher's talk as this will give you a good idea of the ethos of the school. So what should you be considering when looking at dierent schools?

How academic? There is a lot of competition for places at the more academic schools, but it's important that you opt for the best school for your child's ability. Senior independent schools have a selection process - an exam followed by an interview. While you might want your child to go to the school with the best exam results, would that school actually best suit your child? Would they struggle in a very academic school or would they be better suited to a school that caters for a range of abilities where, instead, they can shine? Prep or junior schools are not generally selective, but if you’re keen on a particular senior school then do look at which schools they tend to feed into before making your choice. Curriculum - Prep schools offer a wide range of subjects and also guide pupils towards the Common Entrance exam at 11 or 13. Check which subjects are offered by the independent senior schools you visit - particularly if your child has an interest or talent, such as drama. Check whether the school follows GCSE and A Levels or alternatives such as IGCSE and IB. Single sex or mixed - More schools are becoming co-educational, whether all the way through or from Sixth Form.
Teenagers tend to be less self-conscious in single sex schools, are not distracted during class and are less worried about what others may think in class. But co-education offers the chance for boys and girls to mix easily and offer a wider perspective on subjects (and life!). Facilities & extra-curricular - Some schools have great playing fields and sports halls on site whereas other schools have to bus the children to sports centres and grounds elsewhere - which means you're more likely to do a lot of picking up after sports events. Check what extra-curricular activities are on offer during the lunch hour and after school. Clubs and organisations are a great way for children to mix with others outside their class and helps them to pursue new interests. Scholarships & bursaries - Scholarships are mainly available for music, sport, drama or allrounders. If your child excels in a particular area enquire about scholarship exams. They are not means-tested but based purely on ability. Bursaries are means-tested and are awarded to families where it would not normally be possible to send their child privately due to the cost. Different levels of bursary may be offered – often from around 25% upwards, but each school will have a different policy, so ask early on. What to ask on the day - You can get a good feel for a school just by wandering around, but do ask questions as you go. The teachers are, of course, keen to promote their school. Ask about the ethos of the school, how they deal with discipline and bullying strategies. First year pupils often help out on the day so encourage your child to ask them questions. Exams - You may love a particular school but your child still has to pass an exam to get in. However, an offer of a place is not wholly dependent on the highest scores. While some take only those who show the highest academic achievement, many others take children from the top, middle and lower tiers academically. If your child does well enough, they will be asked to come for an interview which is an important part of the selection process. Ask the school whether it provides old exam papers. Test papers are also available online from companies such as Bond or can be bought at WHSmith. By Pippa Duncan

Make your wedding day one they’ll all remember! The first thing to bear in mind is that many people that come to your wedding won’t know each other, so it’s important that you give everyone the best chance of becoming better acquainted. You may not have time to introduce people personally, so instead ask a close friend or relative to look out for those who are coming along on their own. Position individuals considerately on the table plan next to someone with similar interests or who works in the same field.
26 - WEDDING FEATURE
It’s also important to place quieter individuals next to somebody warm and welcoming.
An engagement party is also a great idea – hire out an area of a bar somewhere accessible to everyone so that your guests will have a chance to mingle before your big day.
A common problem at weddings is that family and friendship groups may not have seen each other for a while, meaning that great huddles of people may form.
R H UNCOVERED
A fantastic way of breaking these up and encouraging people to mix is by incorporating some games into the day’s itinerary.
You might have chandeliers, sugar-coated almonds and a six-foot train, but a bit of fun won’t detract from the glamour and sense of occasion, it’ll simply allow your guests to let their hair down.
Organise a sweepstake for how long the best man’s speech will take and ask an usher to time it, with the winner receiving a prize.

Don’t forget any little ones - Look after them and their parents can relax and enjoy themselves. So think about food timings; if you have a midday ceremony and the wedding breakfast isn’t until mid-afternoon, arrange a hamper with biscuits, packets of raisins, bananas and cartons of squash to see them through. Avoid E numbers and too many sweets – and have the basket on a high table so that tiny hands can’t stuff themselves silly. Don’t forget that weddings can be boring for children, so pick up some cheap toys to keep them amused during speeches. Colouring books and crayons are great (be careful with pens), as are books, and puppets are fantastic for later in the day. If you are getting married in a hotel, encourage parents to book a room so that if their children need an early night, they can all be put down together and mums can take it in turn to supervise so that nobody misses out on the party. When your evening guests arrive, get the party started by jazzing up your first dance - This can be the most worrying part of the day for the groom, so invest in some choreography or choose a song that’s a little less daunting and involving other members of the wedding party can also ease the anxiety.

Instead of cradling each other to a Whitney Houston classic, think about a song which makes you both laugh, or something with a fun routine to follow: Grease is a good one, as is Saturday Night Fever, or something which brings back memories such as a cheesy 80s tune. By choosing an upbeat track, you’re likely to get people up onto the dance floor, so encourage children and grandparents to join in and pluck people from the crowd so that everyone feels involved. Don’t be afraid to break tradition if it suits you - Why not skip the receiving line, so that people aren’t forced to wait around, only to struggle for something to say? And when it comes to speeches, keep them short and sweet – perhaps with just the bride and groom offering a few words of thanks? The trick with all these personal touches is to delegate. Plan well in advance and ask for help from your ushers and bridesmaids – it’s what they’re there for. The most important thing to remember is to stay relaxed; the more stressed you become with all the details, the less fun your wedding day will be. When people talk about ‘that fantastic wedding’, they generally mean that it was a comfortable, fun, and relaxing day spent celebrating two people they love.

Crawley Jobs Fair Crawley Civic Hall Friday - 19th September 2014
Proud Media Sponsor for Crawley Jobs Fair 2014
Crawley is ranked amongst the UK’s top 10 towns in terms of employment opportunities and economic vibrancy; with unemployment at 2.5 per cent and new business start ups at a record high for our town.
Our town is home to many leading national and global companies and in the last year we have seen a number of household brand names open offices and facilities locally, but still finding the right kind of work or getting back in to employment after a long period or because of the age you are, may be difficult.
I fully appreciate, however, as someone who has been out of work myself in the past, that if you are one of those 2.5 per cent, then it’s 100 per cent of a problem.
That is why I am holding a dedicated Crawley Jobs Fair at the Civic Hall on Friday, 19th September 2014, which is of course free of charge to all job seekers and designed to allow you an opportunity to meet and speak to key local employers; major firms such as CGG, Elekta and Vent-Axia. Regardless of the stage people are at in their career, whether just starting out or looking to top up their pension, this may just be the ticket to get back into work. Wet Room s
They’re hip, they’re hot and they’re wet, wet, wet and no, we’re not talking about an Eighties pop band, but the aspirational trend for bathrooms. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you need to know before installing a wet room or walk-in shower. Just what is a wet room anyway? In a conventional wet room, the whole bathroom is, potentially, the shower area. There’s no step up into the shower cubicle – in fact, there’s no shower cubicle; instead, the room is tanked (treated to make it completely waterproof) and given a floor drain and a decent-sized shower head. Add a conventional loo and basin, and bingo, you have a wet room.
create problems for small children. As with all home improvements, adding an inappropriately over-the-top wet room to an otherwise ordinary house is not a good idea. Without good ventilation a wet room can all too quickly become musty and mouldy. And, last but by no means least, there’s every wet room owner’s nightmare – a failure in the tanking resulting in leaks and damp patches.
Why would I want one? Wet rooms done well are stylish, contemporary and seen as the last word in luxury, and some say they add value to a property – though it must be added that this seems to apply mainly to high-end, urban homes rather than your average suburban semi or country cottage. If you enjoy an indulgent shower then a wet room gives you an unparalleled sense of freedom and space (you can even design it so you have a view); and if your bathroom is on the small side then removing the bath will give you loads more room. Wet rooms should be easier to keep clean, too – no fiddling around the screen or tray, just a mop over as necessary, which is especially easy if you fit a wall-mounted basin and WC. Finally, wet rooms can be better for older people or anyone with impaired mobility, as there’s no step up into the shower to negotiate.
Can I have a wet-room without the potential problems? Absolutely. You can create a walk-in shower, which is larger than usual, at floor level for ease of access, and just as streamlined and chic. The advantage is that it has its own below-floor drainage area and is enclosed by a good-looking glass panel: thus the water is contained in one area (so no soaked loo roll), and the room won’t need such extensive preparation with regard to drainage and tanking. The risk of leaks is reduced – though there are no guarantees. The disadvantage is that a walk-in will take up more space than a standard shower cubicle.
What are the technicalities? Wet rooms are often recommended for ground floors and basements, where the sub-floor is more likely to be solid. In a first-floor installation it’s more tricky. You may need to strengthen joists in order to bear the load of heavy stone tiles; you’ll What can go wrong? certainly need to ensure that the floor is It’s not advisable to convert your only stable, as wooden joists that flex could bathroom into a wet room – potential buyers tend to want at least one bath and, create cracks in tiles or waterproofing. what’s more, you do need access to a dry In all cases you need to create a suitable drainage slope, either with a ‘former’ loo and basin, especially if there’s more and suitable levelling compound, or a than one of you in the household. pre-formed tray set into the floor. To accommodate waste fittings, you may need to raise the entire floor level of the room, which could mean having to re-size the doorway. Really good tanking is vital. It may be in the form of impermeable sheeting or a trowelled-on sealant, and should be applied to the entire floor of the wet room or walk-in, the walls that are likely to become wet, and extend beyond by 50cm each side. Another option for walls is to use prefabricated water-resistant boarding. In both cases it is necessary to seal vulnerable areas (corner joints and pipework penetrations) using a special sealing strip. Then there’s your water supply. If you have low water pressure or a small tank, for example, you may need to fit a bigger tank or add a pump. Finally, ventilation. Fit a really good extractor fan, following building regulations religiously (ask advice from your local planning authority), and avoid condensation by also having some form of heating in the room, whether underfloor or radiators.

The Evil Weevil By Pippa Greenwood
The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) is notorious, especially for gardeners who concentrate on pots, and always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. Both the adults and their grubs do damage, but it’s the innocent looking grubs that give the vine weevil its bad reputation. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. Now that they’re being controlled successfully commercially, they’re perhaps less of a problem to gardeners than they once were but if you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know them better. How do you know you have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to nearly any surface; a brilliant feature as, despite the wing-cases, these pests cannot fly, so rely on their climbing to access the foliage on which they feed. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see the weevil itself. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually doing most damage on the lower, most accessible leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head. You’re likely to find them in the compost or soil, usually close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. They eat the roots, burrow in to tubers and on woody plants may even eat the tissues at the stem base and on larger roots.
Unless you’re removing a plant from its pot, or digging one up you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it is when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring. What do Vine Weevils attack? Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers, probably because it’s easier for them to move through compost than garden soil. They’re a greater problem on perennial plants and those with fleshier roots or tubers. Alpines, cyclamen, primulas, fuchsias, hydrangeas, begonias, rhododendrons, euonymus, and strawberries seem to be particularly prone to attack. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March and May, but also at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are tiny and dark brown, each less than 1mm diameter and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs which feed and grow until they reach full size. The grubs pupate in the soil or compost where they have been feeding and within the pupae, if you look carefully you can see adult features developing – the antennae, the legs and the wing pads are often clearly visible. The adults then appear, start to feed and lay eggs.
What can you do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants carefully for foliage damage and check the roots before you introduce anything new to your garden. Buy plants only from reputable sources. Avoid re-using compost in containers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot. As vine weevils cannot fly, making barriers is relatively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around the rim of containers as this should prevent the female from reaching the compost surface to lay her eggs. Similarly a gritty mulch may reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch. Try creating miniature moats around the legs of greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a bowl of water. Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls. They’re available from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and some seed catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively the area must be kept constantly moist, so that the nematodes can move through the compost to attack the grubs. They enter the grubs’ bodies and produce a bacterial infection which kills them. The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and you’ll have the best effect if you use them during August and September.

Every parent knows how much fun families can have in the water – whether splashing about, playing games, learning to swim or challenging fitness in a bid for gala glory. K2 Crawley – operated by Freedom Leisure in partnership with Crawley Borough Council – has a wide range of swimming options to suit all the family. When the habits start controlling you Most of us have ‘quirky’ little habits that we follow. We check the door to the house twice or more as we leave. We check that electric equipment is switched off several times before we leave the house. It not a bad thing, it keeps us safe and makes sure that those routine but important repetitive actions are done correctly.
What started as a ritual of jumping over a fish pond, with the thought that she had to do this to keep her family safe, turned into, at the extreme, washing her hands in neat bleach up to 60 times a day.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could take back that part of your life that controls unwanted habits?
So what is the best way to take back that control? The best way is to learn how to take those controls back It can prevent you from leading yourself. It’s important to a normal life. You are unable to have certain habits, a bit hold down a job or relationship like it’s important to have some level of anxiety, the and sometimes find it hard to important thing is to be interact even with your own in control of it. family. Lamb and Aubergine Curry This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.
Serves 4, Ready in 50 minutes Method Ingredients 3 tbsp sunflower oil 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste
400g sieved tomatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve
Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.
Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.
