A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published. Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

HADLEIGH IN BLOOM Over the last three years Hadleigh in Bloom has gone from strength to strength and I know that many residents and visitors enjoy the hanging baskets up and down the High Street, adding a splash of colour to our beautiful town. However, with our increasingly hot summers it has proven a challenge to keep the baskets sufficiently watered. Some of you will have seen Rowan out on a daily basis, and latterly, the two of us diligently watering the baskets by hand after both of our water bowsers gave up the ghost, taking us in excess of four hours each time! I am delighted, therefore, to announce that Plant Parts have very kindly bought us a new state-of-the-art water bowser which does the job quicker and more efficiently. Without their support and generosity we could not have continued, so a massive thank-you to Richard Finch and all at Plant Parts. We look forward to seeing the hanging baskets again next summer for everyone in the town to enjoy. Stuart Service, Visit Hadleigh Chairman

FREE HEARING ASSESSMENTS One local business is holding a free hearing care event to enable the residents of Hadleigh to communicate with confidence. Hearing loss affects one in six people in the UK and it takes 10 years on average before those who have noticed a loss in their hearing choose to seek help. Research has also proven that other than a reduced quality and experience of life, hearing loss can also lead to cognitive decline resulting in conditions such as depression and dementia. The Hearing Care Centre, a family-run business with 26 centres across East Anglia, will hold a special Hearing Care Day at their clinic in Health By Design on Hadleigh’s High Street on Tuesday 29 October from 9am until 5pm. Complimentary hearing assessments will be on offer at the event, as well as professional advice from The Hearing Care Centre’s award winning team to help you hear to your full potential. To find out more or to book an appointment, call The Hearing Care Centre on Freephone 0800 096 2637 or visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/healthbydesign

THE HAIR LOUNGE UNVEILS ECOFRIENDLY SALON REFURBISHMENT The Hair Lounge in Hadleigh unveiled its newly refurbished salon and branding with a launch party and charity raffle supporting Suffolk Mind on Friday 26 July. The busy salon was closed for just over a week to complete the refurbishment of the ground floor and owner Lisa Ashford, known as Lee to her clients, was delighted to show off the new fixtures and fittings to her team and to clients. Lisa has worked in the hairdressing industry for over 30 years and moved to the Hadleigh-based salon in 2007 as manager. Following an opportunity to purchase the business, Lisa became the proud owner in 2013 and this year felt that the time was right to give the salon a new identity to match the many boutique shops and restaurants that line Hadleigh High Street. Lisa commented; “Our clients are at the heart of our business and many can spend a long time in the salon having hair treatments so I feel that it is important to provide the best environment that I can for them and for my staff.” The new look and feel of the salon demonstrate Lisa’s commitment to using sustainable fixtures and fittings and includes eco-friendly flooring, new wash units with eco shower heads and styling chairs composed of entirely recycled materials. The introduction of a number of plants also gives the modern salon a relaxed and natural environment for clients. Lisa recently changed the products used and sold in the salon to the Davines range of sustainable products that use naturally derived ingredients, are generated with renewable energy and packaged to minimise their environmental impact, all inspired by the ideal of Sustainable Beauty. Davines are a certified B Corporation, which means they meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance. Lisa commented; “I am passionate about sustainability and environmental concerns and feel it is important to not only practice these values at home but also in my business. So, wherever possible I use sustainable and environmentally friendly products, such as biodegradable capes and even the sparkling water I offer to clients I buy in glass bottles.” A brand new logo has also been created for The Hair Lounge, reflecting a softer and more modern image to support the salon’s boutique styling and professional approach. This branding is being implemented across the business, including the website. Suffolk-based builders, Healey Building & Maintenance, led the salon refurbishment and as well as being an exciting time for Lisa and her team to see the salon evolve so quickly, it was quite a challenge to deliver the completed project ready for reopening in just over a week. Lisa said: “We knew we were setting Healey Building & Maintenance quite a challenge when we asked for the refurbishment to be completed so quickly. Testament to their commitment to meeting their customers’ needs, though, we didn’t miss a single appointment and our sustainable new look and approach means we’re already attracting new clients through our freshly painted doors.” The Hair Lounge is now looking for a new apprentice to join its growing team. 01473 343344 / thehairloungehadleigh@gmail.com www.hairloungehadleigh.co.uk

What does the scheme offer? The Community Connector Scheme aims to do just what it says! It will support you to connect with: • social activities, clubs and groups and like-minded individuals in this community • the right advice and information for your local situation The scheme does this by offering a private face-to-face discussion with a ‘Community Connector’ to explore ‘what matters to you’ and not ‘what is the matter with you?’. Together with the Community Connector over up to four appointments, you will build your own personal action plan around what is important to you and be supported to put this plan into action. This may include access to: • Debt, benefits, housing advice • Health and fitness groups, such as walking, cycling and dance • Peer support groups, arts, culture and history groups • Local volunteering opportunities When and how can I see a Community Connector? The first step is to see Sophie Cummins, your Community Connector, who will be holding sessions at Hadleigh Health Centre on Wednesday and Friday mornings. An appointment can be made by calling 01473 835477 to ensure you have personal time to explore what’s important to you, to develop an action plan and review it over the next sessions. Alternatively you can be referred by the practice. Where it is not possible to get to the health centre, you may be able to have a home visit. What are the benefits of getting involved with the Connect for Health? • Improved mental health and wellbeing • Meeting new people and developing new friendships • Feeling healthier and fitter • Learning new skills • Opportunities for volunteering and employment How much will this cost me? The Community Connector Support Scheme is free; however, some of the groups and clubs that you might like to get involved in may have a small charge. This can be discussed at your meeting with the Community Connector. Hadleigh on Show on Saturday 5 October PPG members will be on-hand to discuss and promote important areas in health care such as sharing health records, social prescribing and loneliness, your appointments and contact details and they can also tell you about the PPG’s activities and the part that patients can play. We are uniquely placed to represent a collective unbiased view of patients’ and the wider community’s needs and priorities. During the day we will be happy to take your feedback on patients’ experiences at the practice. You will also have the opportunity to join the PPG, comment on the effectiveness of the event and contribute your ideas for future events. Out & About HADLEIGH CHORAL EXPLORES ELIJAH The Ansell Centre was buzzing with excited chatter as the members of Hadleigh Choral Society and their guests gathered for an open rehearsal of our latest venture, Mendelssohn’s Elijah. But soon, Chris Phelps, our musical director called us to order with a few warm-up exercises and we were off into a rousing chorus of Help, Lord. The afternoon was indeed an exploration into this amazing Oratorio telling the story of Elijah, the Old Testament prophet who called down a drought on the Earth because the people of Canaan had not listened to the true God but worshipped Baal. There ensues a famine, then miraculous rains; a huge battle against King Ahab in which thousands are slain and a jealous Queen Jezebel swears vengeance on the Prophet; revelations; fiery chariots with fiery horses and a whirlwind which takes Elijah to heaven. Such drama is reflected in the music with stirring choruses and descriptive arias, but there are also beautiful melodies and reflective passages for soloists, choir and audience to relish. We listened to recordings by different choirs and conductors, we sang some of the choruses, and we learnt about the composer Mendelssohn, who conducted the first performance of Elijah in Birmingham Town Hall in 1846 to great acclaim! We will be performing this masterpiece along with Colchester Symphony Orchestra and some brilliant young soloists in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 23 November at 7pm. Tickets are available from choir members. For details visit: www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk

LIBRARY LIFE: CELEBRATE WITH US Suffolk Libraries Day – Saturday 12 October There is a time and a place for subtlety and this, my friends, is not one of them. Across Suffolk on October 12, every library will be celebrating Suffolk Libraries Day and we hope that many of you will join us. What is Suffolk Libraries Day I hear you ask? Well, it’s a chance for us to tell as many of you as possible about the ever-expanding facilities and services we provide within our communities and how you can interact with and use the library system in a way that benefits you. But, and this is the unsubtle part, we also need to keep in the forefront of people’s minds, that we are a charity and it is through events such as Suffolk Libraries Day that you can help us raise the funds we need to keep our libraries alive and thriving. Hadleigh Library is having a week of fun events including craft activities, wildlife talks and an author signing. On Saturday 12 October we invite you to come along to see us and enjoy the fun of a cake sale, face painting, a raffle, refreshments and more. Keep up-to-date on times and activities by following us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, or pop in and see us. If you haven’t been to a library for a long time, this is a great opportunity to find out more about us and if you are a regular user, then we always love to see a familiar face. There are times that you really can make a difference and supporting your library will benefit you and everyone else. For more information on our services and the different ways you can donate to Suffolk Libraries, do come and talk to us or visit: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk

SPECIALISTS IN THE BUSINESS FOR OVER 40 YEARS

And you thought choirs do singing? Surely not! Any guesses as to what this lot are up to? Maybe rehearsing Leaving on a Jet Plane or Fly Me to the Moon... or maybe they just haven’t really got the hang of I’m a Little Teapot yet? No, it’s just the start of warming up after the summer break and rehearsals for Hadleigh on Show on October 5 where we’re backing the fashion show with songs from different decades. So here’s your chance to jive along with At the Hop and fill the osteopath surgeries, or to sing along with Blue Moon, Hallelujah, Mamma Mia and Mr Blue Sky. After that we’re on to a whole new range of beautiful songs for the Christmas concert on December 7, many of which I have to admit are new to me and others. The Huron Carol anyone? Or Ring Out Solstice Bells? Torches? Some lovely old ones you’ll know like A Hazy Shade of Winter (Paul Simon), A Winter’s Tale (Tim Rice and Mike Batt) and Winter (Tori Amos). And then there’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day, which if you were in QD at the end of August you’d think it probably was. But come and sing with us and take your minds off it! Newcomers are always welcome to give it a try and see what you think. All you need is enthusiasm. Just turn up at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh on Thursdays at 7.30pm or contact Stella (01473 823477) or John (01473 823791). www.hadscommunitychoir.onesuffolk.net Facebook: Hadleigh Community Choir

PAUL NASH, A WAR ARTIST EVEN IN TIMES OF PEACE Presented by Ray Warburton Quay Theatre, Sudbury, Tuesday 15 October at 2pm Paul Nash is best known as a painter of war, as an official war artist in both world wars. This lecture will look at some of his most famous war paintings but will consider also the other ‘wars’ that played a major part in his life and art; including the never-ending war between mankind and nature, and his own personal wars with ill-health, loss and love. It will also explain how he incorporated abstraction and surrealism into his art making. Ray Warburton is a guide at both Tate Britain and Tate Modern who leads public tours of the permanent displays and also undertakes exhibition tours. He is an experienced speaker on a range of themes.

Our next meeting is on October 15 when Russell Bowes will give a talk entitled Digging For Victory. As the title suggests, the talk will concentrate on the Second World War years when gardens, great and small, public and private, were transformed into food gardens. Russell will be looking at the role played by the Land Girls who helped put food on the tables of the nation. He will also explore the advice, including propaganda, given to gardeners, both in print and via the radio. On November 19 Peter Lawrence will entertain us with a talk on timber framed buildings in Suffolk and Essex. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre IP5 1JF at 7.15pm. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome; the entrance fee is £3. National Trust members and volunteers can join us for £8 per year (£12 per couple at same address). CAPEL COUNTRYSIDE CLUB Our meeting in September started with a vote on an idea to merge with Suffolk Wildlife Trust Group to try and increase members and visitors to our meetings. After a lot of discussion with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the committee decided to put the idea to members at our meeting. Everybody present unanimously voted to stay as we are, as a village club (of 35 years standing) and the majority wanted to carry on meeting on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in Capel Methodist Church. A talk followed on The Diary of a Norfolk Parson. This was a fascinating talk about James Woodford, a parson in the 18th century, and gave an insight into the life of the parson through his diary which he wrote every day throughout his life. It was set in the village of Weston near Norwich. Our meeting on October 8 is a talk on the Isles of Scilly and its Wildlife, which promises to be popular. On November 12 Alex Bass will give a presentation on North Norfolk Coast, its Wildlife and Landscape, which we hope will appeal to members and visitors. Refreshments are available after talks with time for questions to our speakers. Visitors are always welcome.

OUT & ABOUT / Schools HADLEIGH & DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB

As a setting, we are excited to share some news with you!

Our speaker on Monday 14 October is Shirley Sampson from the RSPB garden at Flatford. I am sure many of us have visited this lovely spot many times. Her theme will be wildlife gardening. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance fee is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments. There will be a raffle and plants for sale. The competition for October is ‘a vase of autumn colour’. New members and visitors are always welcome. If you would like to find out more about the club, we will be taking part in Hadleigh on Show on Saturday 5 October and look forward to seeing you there. E: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

SESAW NEWS Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare Stoke Road, Leavenheath CO6 4PP 01787 210888 / www.sesaw.co.uk It’s the season of mists and yellow fruitfulness, darker evenings and the SESAW £1 at Newton Green! Yes, we are back at the village hall on School Lane on October 12 with bargains for friends, family and pets, a raffle, homemade refreshments, free entry and parking.

We have joined The Curiosity Approach Accreditation, a “modern day approach to Early Years that fits perfectly into current changing technological times. Bringing curiosity, awe and wonder into early childhood and creating the thinkers and doers of the future” (taken from The Curiosity Approach 2017). This is going to take us a minimum of a year and involves much reflection and positive change. We will be changing the environment to be more natural and like an extension of home, using authentic, real resources, not plastic toys. These resources spark the curious side of the children, stimulating copious amounts of learning. If your curious side has been ignited and you would like further information about Robin’s Childcare, please contact Emma on 01473 310767 or email us at: info@robinschildcare.co.uk

layham playgroup We have been getting to know all our new families and the children are settling into the playgroup. We have been thinking about what we look like, our likes and dislikes and our families and homes. The children have led our role play and transformed the area from homes to doctors and on to hospitals.

If you have some festive items to sell, how about reserving a table at the SESAW Christmas Fair? You’ll find booking forms on our website or phone 07912 077617, but hurry as places are limited. The event takes place on Sunday 17 November, 10am-3pm at the Old School, Long Melford. We have kittens for homing, many the offspring of abandoned, unspayed cats. There are some pretty tabbies, but please give black and black & white cats a chance. We have just as much character and are as full of fun as a box of crackers!

The weather has provided us with lots of opportunities during our outdoor play; our mud kitchen area has been a big favourite and we have also had bubbles and streamers on windy days. The weather has also helped the flowers and vegetables in the playgroup garden to grow. Our sunflowers and lilies have grown very tall. Our pumpkins are starting to flower. We are waiting for our apples to be ready to pick from our apple tree. As we think about the changing season we are looking forward to celebrating our Harvest Festival with our friends at St Andrew’s Church. Regular readers may recall how opinion was divided over some gangly yellow baby birds earlier this year. Some said they were ducklings, others thought they were goslings. As the photograph shows, it’s now obvious they are a handsome family of Aylesbury ducks, much admired by visitors. The sun will be going down soon so it’s time to patrol the garden and find a snug spot in the hay stack for me, Ollie (the Black) Cat

If you are interested in seeing Layham Playgroup for yourself and would like to arrange a visit, please contact us at: 07999 866419 / admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Ladybird Toddler Group takes place every Wednesday morning during term time from 9.30-11am and is open to all children from birth to five years. We have toys and activities ranging from a quiet baby area to role-play, small world, playdough and crafts.

sport HADLEIGH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

SUFFOLK ROCKETS NETBALL CLUB

First Team Round Up A visit to Clacton FC saw us gain a point in a 1-1 draw, our cause not aided as we were down to ten men for some of the second half due to a second yellow card. Haverhill Rovers at home saw us gain three valuable points, winning 6-2 to set us up for our home FA Vase tie against Stotfold. This too we won 6-2 to gain a home match in the next round against Haverhill Borough. A mid-week trip to Stowmarket saw us return empty handed (losing 3-0) before a long trip to basement side Gorleston which saw us gain a point in a 1-1 draw. We played Haverhill Borough in the FA Vase on September 14, securing a 5-2 to see us into the first round proper with an away game to Leighton Town (Leighton Buzzard) on October 12.

The last few months have been very busy as we’ve prepared for the new season. In July we had our annual presentation evening to celebrate all the players’ achievements during the season, Congratulations to Tanya Cotter who was awarded Outstanding Adult Player of the season and to Charlotte Clay for Outstanding Junior Player. Both players have shown commitment to their netball journeys as well as starting their umpiring qualifications.

Reserve Team Round Up An away trip to Wivenhoe Reserves saw us return home with all the points, winning 8-2. Woodbridge away was next up in a Chell Trophy first round match which saw the result at 0-0 at full time. We won the penalty shootout 4-3 and will host Halstead in the next round. We dropped three pints in the next match on September 7 as we put in a below standard performance to lose 3-2 against Walsham le Willows, but we got back on track on Tuesday 17 as our short trip to Whitton Utd saw us win 4-1 to gain three points. Under 18’s Round Up Wednesday 4 September saw us host Wisbech St Mary in the first round of the FA Youth Cup. We put up a gallant fight, but the visitors proved too strong in all areas and secured a 6-1 win. Wednesday 11 September saw more cup action as we hosted Kirkley & Pakefield Royals in a Suffolk FA Youth mid-week match, with manager Tom Camp strengthening his squad. Played at a far more competitive pace, we won the first competitive match of the season 4-2 and secured a place in the next round

We are extremely proud of our U14 team who managed to secure a place in the East Regional U14 Division 1 League for the 2019/2020 season. This is a huge achievement for the club and the players and the girls will be playing some of the biggest clubs in the east region. The team had their first game on September 8 and they won 30-23.

Hadleigh Veterans Both teams won their respective opening leagues match of the season on September 1. Sunday 8 saw both teams in League Cup action with the Vets winning away at Kesgrave while the Brettsiders were beaten in a penalty shootout by Lowestoft Town Vets, this despite coming from behind in normal time to get ahead only to let the lead slip. Also on September 8, our adult teams took to the court in the pre-season league tournament. It was a fantastic day and well done to Suffolk Solar who were runners-up in Division 2, and Suffolk Rockets who also finished runnersup in Division 1. A great start to the season! On September 15 we entered two junior teams into the Sudbury Adult tournament. It’s very important some of our junior players get to play senior netball as it provides them with a different experience, especially a more physical side to the game. Our teams did fantastic. Our U15 team finished third in the Cup division, and our U16 team won the Plate division. Our U15 team was the youngest team in the competition so to end the day in the top division and to finish third was fantastic. Our new season has started, but we still welcome new players! If you are interested in either our junior club or adult back to netball or walking netball please email Hayley at: suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com Walking Netball is taking place on Saturdays 5 and 19 October, 9-10.30am at Hadleigh High School. It’s just £5 with no need to book – just turn up! It’s a fun and social session for ages 14 plus, ladies and gentleman welcome, and ideal for anyone wanting to get back into netball at a more relaxed pace, someone returning from injury or anyone who wants to try something a bit different! On the grapevine PERSONAL FINANCE WITH NICK PLUMB Do you value your life? Most people take out insurance for their home contents and their buildings and have motor insurance to protect their cars. Some people even have insurance for their pets, but more than 60 per cent of the people I meet as a financial adviser do not have enough life insurance in place to properly protect their family if they die prematurely. Unfortunately, life insurance is one of those products that the majority of people don’t have just when it is needed most. And if you don’t have it when you need it – it’s already too late to do anything about it. Taking out life insurance is something that many people are quite unsure about, typically prompting questions like; “How much cover do I need?”, “How long do I need it for?” and “How much will it cost?”. The following is intended to answer some of the questions you may have, and will hopefully persuade you to contact a financial adviser to review your own insurance arrangements sooner rather than later. Do I need life insurance? If you have an outstanding mortgage or if you have dependent children, you need life insurance. It’s that simple. If you bring an income into the household, or if you care for children who are financially dependent upon you, then there will be a financial cost to your family if you die. If the main ‘bread winner’ dies, their salary will have to be replaced. If the partner who cares for your children dies, their duties will have to be taken up by someone who will need to be paid for their services, so that their partner can continue to work and earn. If you have an outstanding mortgage, having insurance that pays off the mortgage will not only ensure that your family will have a roof over their heads, but will also save your spouse or partner the cost of monthly mortgage repayments – usually one of your biggest financial commitments each month. How much will it cost? The cost of life insurance depends on two factors: How much cover you need, and how long you want the cover to last for. Factors such as your age, sex, occupation, health condition and whether you smoke or not are all taken into account when calculating how much your insurance

will cost. This is called the ‘underwriting’ process. The important thing to remember is that it need not cost the earth and getting a quote costs nothing. How much life cover do I need? If you’re the main breadwinner, you will obviously want to maintain your family’s lifestyle so that they do not encounter any financial hardship. If you care for children or other dependents, then your partner will need to provide cash for professionals to take over your role. As a guide, the figure should be enough to replace around 80 per cent of your net earnings (you will be entitled to some state benefits) or at least £20,000 for professional child care each year. How long for? I would normally recommend family protection lasts until the youngest child is aged 21 years, which ensures that your children will have the opportunity to go through university and will reach financial independence. For a mortgage, you should protect the whole of the outstanding term of the loan. Where do I buy it from? To ensure you get the very best deal, you should always take independent financial advice when buying life insurance. Never trust a bank or building society to give you the best deal on your life insurance or mortgage protection, unless their adviser is independent and has searched the entire marketplace for you. Banks and building societies are usually tied to one company or a small group of companies, and that means that they rarely offer the best premium rates for life insurance. Take my Insurance Challenge and save yourself some cash today! If you have a life insurance policy or mortgage protection policy that was arranged for you by your bank or building society, or by an adviser tied to one company, I am confident that in at least 90 per cent of cases, I will be able to find you a policy that offers the same or better benefits for a lower monthly cost. Just give me a call or e-mail me with the policy details (the amount of cover, policy term, and premium, and your date of birth and smoking status) and I will call you back with a free no-obligation quote.

church news CAPEL & ELMSETT METHODIST CHURCHES Have you ever planned a trip or a holiday? You’ve got the brochures out, searched the website and seen wonderful pictures of your chosen destination. In your mind you can anticipate the beauty, the luxury, the relaxation, the fun and the activities. In the days or weeks before you make the trip these pictures are imprinted on your memory. We can easily forget what the process of getting there involves: packing, travelling, queuing, security checks, baggage carousels, transfers and different languages. When we do arrive at the destination, the pictures in the brochure might have been misleading, taken with wide angle lens, the beach may not be so close or there may be other developments crowding your place. Even if the place is exactly as the pictures portrayed, your mind remembers something you forgot to do before you left, or a project planned for the future that you start to worry about. Or you have a migraine developing after the travel, or are sleep deprived because of a different time zone, or you are bitten by an insect, or aches or pains make themselves noticed. If we are staying with a spouse or a friend, we are irritated by them or an old feud, or disagreement comes to the surface. The joy of anticipation is thwarted by the realisation that you have inadvertently bought yourself to this destination.

Come and meet us We are a family of ordinary people who love God and trust Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. We would be delighted to welcome you to our Church office in George Street and to any of our services, activities, courses and events. Sunday Services (live streaming) 10.30am: All Age Worship including crèche, teaching and activities for ages three-13 6.30pm: Evening Service Audio recordings of our services are available on our website, YouTube and as podcasts from iTunes.

When we were at home, we could blame our moods on the weather, or the politics of the day, or the pressure of work or family commitments. We assumed azure skies, palm beaches, luxury hotels would bring happiness but we bring our emotional and psychological baggage with us. We need to be understood, loved and respected. If we have been hurt, rejected or are holding resentment we may struggle, blue skies or not. It’s always good to try to keep relationships with family and friends good, but there is something even deeper than that. Our relationship with the created order and the creator. To know that we are loved by God, to keep that relationship right. That’s a tall order, for all of us have messed up and God knows even if no one else does. In Jesus Christ there is the offer of forgiveness, because Jesus died on a cross to pay the penalty for my sin. Jesus offers us “peace with God”, he wants to restore joy in our lives, he wants us to live life to the full. God hasn’t offered a life free from trouble or suffering, but he has offered his peace in our hearts in the midst of trouble. He has offered the hope of eternal life, of heaven. I have great anticipation of that ultimate destination, but I still have many destinations on the journey that keep me full of anticipation.
