CARRIE COHEN

SWOON AESTHETIC SPA AND ACNE CLINIC The love of skincare runs in the family. As the granddaughter of an Avon Lady, Carrie grew up playing with her grandmother’s makeup and skin creams. But it was her own struggle with dry skin and her daughter’s challenges with acne (and the effects of the medications) that compelled Carrie to debut The Swoon Aesthetic Spa and Acne Clinic. Unsatisfied with the results at traditional spas and the lackluster atmosphere at many MedSpas, Carrie set out to offer the best of both worlds. From that concept of clinical-level expertise in a beautiful and relaxing environment, Swoon was born. With Carrie’s team of Medical Aestheticians, physician assistant and medical director, Swoon uses the most modern products and the latest sciences and technologies to achieve the results their clients desire. Carrie’s great joy is helping them look and feel their best as they walk out the doors with renewed confidence. 12590 Perry Hwy. #500 Wexford, PA 15090 724.599.1400 | theswoonspa.com

ALYSSA ANDRESS Director of Operations APRIL HUBAL Owner/Photographer

Foreword In the past 4 years of ICONS, we have been lucky enough to work with and feature almost 200 Pittsburgh-based entrepreneurs. When we released our first volume in 2015, Pittsburgh was really coming into its own. We were excited then about the thought of showcasing local business owners who embodied all walks of life. Some of the entrepreneurs that we featured were just getting started. Others have been around for decades. But, they were all changing the city for the better in some way. We’re so happy to have been able to continue this tradition to this day. In any city, being an entrepreneur is hard work. There is no separation of home life and business. No breaks are given. Sometimes, this entanglement can feel like navigating an urban jungle. The motivation and dedication of our clients is what inspired us to make this year’s cover an artistic metaphor for this reality. We chose a leopard to represent the internal and external ferocity that it takes to make the dream come true. Local artist and friend of the brand, Dino Misetic, unleashed his inner beast when creating this piece. We could not be more thrilled with how it turned out. This year was also the year that the ICONS brand expanded outside of Pittsburgh. We launched our first satellite city, Youngstown, OH, in August with the help of local curator, Dennis Schiraldi. We also acquired a home in Nassau, Bahamas where ICONS can go to be inspired and work outside of their office or local coffee shop. The Isle of ICONS is a dream come true and has been on my personal bucket list since I began my career. Moving forward, each year, we plan to auction off a week’s stay to help benefit local charities and continue the betterment of the city. I’d like to personally thank the people behind this publication; Alyssa Andress, Camden Leeds, Dino Misetic, and Mike Hoff, without whom none of this would be possible. They inspired the pages and worked endlessly to bring their artistic vision to life and because of this determination, execution, and production, we now celebrate Volume Four! ICONically yours,

APRIL HUBAL

IS LE O F

The newest addition to the ICONS brand is the Isle of ICONS - a beach home in Nassau Bahamas that was designed to be the perfect escape for when you need to work somewhere other than your office or local coffee shop. Each room was inspired by the colors of Nassau and has been carefully curated for creative minds - with the goal being to make this the most Instagramable place to stay in the Bahamas. The private beach is just steps away from the front door and ICONS are always welcome to get away to this oasis.

DENIELLE DESANTIS

One part teacher, one part artist, one part global traveler. Denielle brings it all together in amazing style. Her work is infused with the exciting experiences of her journeys, her days as a textile/graphic designer for fashion icons Donna Karan and Norma Kamali, and her love of her hometown — especially the fun and kitschy side. Denielle describes her style as loose realism, with expressionistic qualities through the use of color, splatter, and layering. She has recently been incorporating spray paint, giving her art a graffiti/street quality. Future projects involve large-scale mural work for sports facilities and local businesses, custom pet portraits, and hand-painted apparel. And the success of her style speaks for itself. Whether a print, original or commissioned one-of-a-kind, her work is increasingly in demand across western Pennsylvania and beyond. @denielledesantisart

EMILY CAPITANO EM & E EVENTS

Inspiration is everywhere. But the passion to turn that inspiration into something memorable and beautiful… well, that’s far less common. For Emily, it began as a junior at Duquesne University when she assisted with her first wedding and fell in love with the joy and creativity of unforgettable occasions. After several years assisting some of Pittsburgh’s premier planners, she launched Em & E Events with an uncommon flair for bringing dream events to life. By blending each client’s personal style with Em & E’s unique combination of modern/chic and Romantic/timeless, each wedding and special event becomes a one-of-a-kind work of art in natural harmony with the myriad charms of our city. emandeevents.com | emily@emandeevents.com

GRETA FALVO CICERO SOYIL CANDLES

Working at CBS Radio, Greta first came across soy candles and instantly adored their true scent and the way they burned so cleanly. But to Greta, the way they looked was bland, lifeless and uninspiring. So just for fun and inspired by a love of decor, she began to design her own using more stylish and vintage glass and an original scent inspired by burnt almond torte. And people loved it. Soon, candle making grew from hobby to thriving small business. Today from her studio on Mt. Washington, Greta blends unique scents and crafts each Soyil creation by hand for wholesale customers, special orders, and bridesto-be seeking one-of-a-kind wedding favors. 269 Republic St. Pittsburgh, PA 15211 | www.soyil.com

GRETCHEN BIERENBAUM EVER SKINCARE

What began with a passing suggestion has grown beyond all expectations. A friend of her college roommates connected via Instagram and offered to meet up for coffee. When talk turned to skin care, the friend mentioned Ever — a new skincare line based in California. But Gretchen was skeptical. She’d used high-end spa products, only to be disappointed with the results. But after one try, she discovered the remarkable difference that Ever made — not only in how she looked but in how she felt. By July, she began “social selling” Ever Skincare and Makeup to friends and family, but news of these remarkable naturalbased products soon spread like wildfire. She soon had her own employees and by March had reached a high level leadership position with EVER. Today, Gretchen’s parlayed that success into something bigger and close to her heart — using her success to support local charities. everskin.com/with/gretchenbierenbaum @everprettyinsteelcity

TESHA THOMAS

LIFESPACE PITTSBURGH Sometimes, appreciating the beauty and functionality of homes starts with tearing a few up and putting them back together again. GERALD COOK

ATTORNEY AT LAW Even though he graduated cum laude from Pitt law school and had already launched a successful career in litigation, franchise law was something Gerry had to learn on the fly. He was part of GNC’s legal team when the global brand decided to begin franchising, and Gerry stepped up to take on the job of navigating the legal aspects of the endeavor. Soon GNC was the #1 ranked franchise opportunity in the country and franchising internationally from Canada to Indonesia— and Gerry had found his calling. He later joined Fox Rothschild (twice named Franchise Law Firm of the Year) before opting for the freedom and flexibility of independence. Today, Gerry provides the full range of legal services to both established and first-time franchisors — from clients with 3,000 locations around the world to those with as few as 10 around the region. And all with the confidence of having Gerry’s 35 years of success behind them. cooklegal.com

LAREE SMITH SERENE HAIR STUDIO & SPA

To find serenity, you need to step off the beaten path. For LaRee, that aptly describes her journey to owning Serene Hair Studio & Spa. After attending cosmetology school, she began her career at a high-end salon but soon enrolled in massage school. She then shifted career tracks to work in a full-service spa, but somewhere in those twelve-and-a-half years, she began nursing school and considered a path toward becoming a nurse practitioner. A conversation with a client, who happened to be a broker, set her on a different road: the owner of Serene. LaRee extended the spa’s high-end focus to include a more mainstream audience, and emphasized giving back to the community. Today, Serene’s outgoing, friendly and giving staff includes five stylists, three massage professionals, four estheticians and two nail techs in a welcoming — and yes, more serene — setting away from the main thoroughfare through Mars. 158 Brick Yard Rd. MATTRESS FACTORY From its inception, the Mattress Factory has provided the space and resources for new, site-specific installations from around the world. Throughout its 41 year history, one idea has always guided the organization: Art is not about art, art is about life. It’s about where you live and how you live. The dialogue that forms springs from the intersection of our educational programming and museum visitors opens the discussion about life in Pittsburgh and across the globe. The Mattress Factory has always believed in the equal importance of art and artists, and that showcasing artists from South Africa and Brazil is equally as important as highlighting our community of drag artists like Kierra Darshell. mattress.org facebook.com/pghdragbrunch

RICHARD BAZZY SHULTS FORD

It’s safe to say that everyone knows Richard Bazzy. Even if you’ve never been to one of his dealerships, you’re bound to be familiar with his upbeat, fun, infectious television and radio commercials. And this is where his true passion lies. Richard encourages Pittsburgh, as part of the Bubba show, to reach out and lift up their fellow members of the community. He has been able to help so many people - whether they’re kids starting school or families at the holidays - not as promotions for his own brand, but as a symbol of what this city is and does. Using the media to bring people together and watching the city respond with warm hearts and a genuine passion for charity is what truly sets him apart as an ICON. Richard believes in the future of Pittsburgh saying, “We can accomplish great things, and my part is just a cog in that wheel. And sometimes, simply making us all aware is how we achieve greatness.”
