A publication of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce

Vista Drive-In is as central to Manhattan’s aura as the letters atop Bluemont Hill. In 2014, the restaurant celebrated 50 years of operation at 1911 Tuttle Creek Boulevard, and keeps charging ahead as one of Manhattan’s landmark spots. The long-established, old-school “burger joint” has been as much a part of K-State students’ impromptu date nights and study breaks as the student union (K-State Union slightly older).

As central as Vista has been to Manhattan’s long progression, it’s relative isolation from more congested business districts leaves Brad and Karen Streeter without regular interaction to fellow business owners. Manhattan Area Chamber has produced just the right antidote for such an occasion, with the Chamber of Commerce’s flurry of events such as Business After Hours. Karen Streeter, chair of the Chamber’s Small Business Council, lists small business support, education and advocacy as very important Chamber assets. “It’s a way to give people information they need,” she states. “It’s important for small business people who just wouldn’t have the first notion where to turn ... we try to get information that people can utilize. “It’s nice to know we can make a difference. Everybody working together makes the community better.”

Fort Riley music celebration … sounds like Victory!

When the 1st Infantry Division celebrates victory, it comes from a history of getting the job done. When it comes to celebrating the Fighting First’s 100th anniversary, this will be a big celebration.

An all-day music event Aug. 19 is open to the public, "Victory Fest" celebrates the 1st Infantry Division's 100th anniversary with a full-day schedule of events highlighted by four nationallyacclaimed bands: Lit, The Charlie Daniels Band, The All-American Rejects and Eli Young Band will garner attention from music fans of all ages. Fort Riley’s Marshall Army Air Field stages the big blast. More information: Victoryfest2017.com.

Lively nightlife hops around The Little Apple

®

Nighttime revelry is commonplace in this place known as Manhappiness. Memorable experiences are often closely associated with Wildcat victories in AggieVille, and now the nightlife along Poyntz Avenue has begun to rival that of the original “uptown” area … The Ville. Excitement has been on the rise with events that focus on libations, and also serve to expand cultural knowledge for certain world regions.

Harry’s Somm Series originated as an ode to the restaurant’s 20th anniversary celebration. Early series offerings focused on Scotch, bourbon and tequila (All Things Agave), and have continued with recent wine tastings (Wine 101, Syrah/Shiraz) and upcoming Wines of Portugal, Austria, Piedmont on weekday nights. Harry’s started the cascade, followed recently by sister restaurant Bourbon & Baker, which in May held Derby Day and in June featured a memorable Mouton Noir dinner with Andre Mack and whiskey/food pairing dinner night. Across the Manhattan community, Arrow Coffee Company, Bluemont Hotel, Liquid Art Winery and Estates, Straight Upp Creative Studio and Uncorked Inspiration have joined the lineup of hearty fun to be experienced in Manhappiness.

Mark your caelndars for more events in July-August, to include Tequila Tasting (Bluemont), Paint & Sip (Iron Clad), Wines of Austria (Harry’s) and Acoustics in the Amphitheater (Liquid Art). We offer amazing opportunities to experience nightlife, Manhappenin’ style! Check the calendar for updated events at VisitManhattanKS.org/calendar.aspx.

Florida-Georgia Line headline 2018 Stampede The 22nd Kicker Country Stampede was loud with Thomas Rhett, Chris Stapelton and Alan Jackson. Nearly 120,000 fans enjoyed the annual festival at Tuttle Creek State Park.Visit Manhattan runs the Information Booth during the festival, gathering information of where visitors are from, how many years they have attended Stampede, suggestions for improvements and future artists they would like to see perform.

Ridin’, Ropin’, Wranglin’

Let’s go ropin’ for a day filled with adventures as National Day of the Cowboy celebrates the American West and cowboys’ roles in developing commerce to Kansas Territory. The fun is unceasing for cowpokes young and old July 22 at Flint Hills Discovery Center and outside in Blue Earth Plaza. In every sense, a bold day of cowboyin’ when you bring the family out for National Day of the Cowboy. Experience these activities and much more: · Branding · Cow chip toss · Buffalo Soldier encampment · Calf roping · Electric bull riding Plus, mark down Aug. 6 for Community Day, and Aug. 17 Go See It! lecture series (Total Solar Eclipse).

Fair time, fun time at CiCo Park

Riley County Fair (July 27-30) bursts on the scene each July with fair-opening parade, carnival and of course the alwaysanticipated Kaw Valley Rodeo at Wells Arena, Riley County Fairgrounds in CiCo Park. Rodeo action begins at 8 p.m. July 27-29, with the eighth annual military family appreciation night picnic sponsored by Briggs Auto. There are rarely any idle moments during fair time, so hitch up the family wagon, err SUV, and head out to the fairgrounds at CiCo Park!

Adams golfers revel challenges posed at Colbert

Tomorrow’s mega-golf stars like Dustin Johnson and Jason Day typically get their starts on mini-tours below classification of the heavy-hitters on PGA Tour. The Adams Pro Golf Tour is just such a circuit, and for the last five years Colbert Hills has been a treasured APT stop. The sixth annual Colbert Charity Classic pops back into the Sunflower State July 26-29 to face Colbert’s challenging winds and undulating fairways. Kolton Crawford was a year removed from the University of Arkansas when he captured the 2016 title with 9-under-par, 279 score. Stay tuned to Visit Manhattan social media for field entrants. The tournament is open to the public, with free attendance. Check the guys out before they make the big time!

Look ahead: Upcoming August events

• Aug. 5, Brew 2 Shoe race, Poyntz • Harry’s Somm Series: US wines

• Aug. 19, Murder Mystery Dinner at Wareham • Aug. 31, Purple Power Play, City Park

Greater Manhattan partners explore BTBC Manhattan Economic Development partners had a special opportunity to tour the Bioscience & Technology Business Center in Lawrence. The primary focus of the trip was to witness ways in which the BTBC has established infrastructure for business support and growth. A Manhattan partnership effort in a similar manner would direct efforts to capitalize on economic development benefits and opportunities. BTBC opened in 2010 with a second phase in 2015, and has expanded to become one of the largest economic development generators in the Midwest. BTBC has evolved from a unique partnership among the City of Lawrence, Douglas County, University of Kansas and Lawrence Chamber. The Manhattan Chamber shares tremendous partnerships with the city, county and K-State, and now the concentration is to bring these forces together to grow successful companies. BTBC considers itself a mini-technology park, located on the west campus of the university. From its $2.2 million FY 2017 operating budget, nearly two-thirds comes from private funding sources. Thanks to our partners who endeavored on the enriching trip. Direct inquiries to Director of Economic Development Trent Armbrust, Manhattan Area Chamber, trent@manhattan.org.
