Whether you’ve got 10 minutes, all day, are on your own or have the children with you, we’d love to see you. You don’t have to like everything inside. And you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy a visit.

What’s new at Manchester Art Gallery

What’s inside? Our collection is made up of paintings, drawings, sculpture and decorative art. We’re

probably most famous for our Pre-Raphaelite paintings, but displays cover all periods, including what’s happening now.

Where to start? Check out our Manchester Gallery for an introduction to the city’s rich artistic history. Borrow a new audioguide for just £2, pick up a free highlights leaflet and follow a short trail or collect a floorplan and just wander. Relax over lunch or a coffee Choose from tea and cake, a tasty salad, a quick sandwich or freshly prepared hot dishes in our friendly cafe and selfservice restaurant. There are some great tasting children’s options too, from homemade fish fingers to a pick-and-mix lunchbox. The art of shopping Take home your favourite painting as a postcard or print. Splash out on something special such as handcrafted jewellery. Pick up an 11 Rooms booklet as a souvenir of this unique contemporary art experience commissioned by Manchester International Festival. And keep the kids happy with pocketmoney priced souvenirs. All your purchases help support the gallery, so thank you for shopping and eating with us.

With our free family summer holiday events and year round family friendly activities and facilities, we make it easy for you to enjoy some quality time together.

Ford Madox Brown: Pre-Raphaelite Pioneer 24 September 2011– 29 January 2012 £8 (£6 concessions) Free entry for under 18s and Manchester Art Gallery Friends and Patrons This is the first major exhibition of Ford Madox Brown’s work since 1964. The show brings together 140 paintings and drawings, including his epic paintings of Victorian life, Work and The Last of England. It champions Brown’s pioneering role in the development of PreRaphaelitism and explores how his rebellion against traditionally taught methods of painting led to a completely new, radical and original style. Advance tickets will be on sale on our website. For information on group tours with expert guides, email magevents@manchester.gov.uk or call 0161 235 8855. The Pre-Raphaelite Experiment Until May 2012 We have a special interest in Ford Madox Brown and his legacy because Manchester Art Gallery has an important collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings. They were bought for the city by our Victorian predecessors and we’ve embarked on a year-long project to find out what they mean to today’s Mancunians. Next time you visit, pop in to Gallery 6 where there’s space for you to tell us what you think of the Pre-Raphaelites in general and four specially chosen paintings in particular. As we work on the Pre-Raphaelite Experiment with local groups, schools and families, the display in Gallery 6 will evolve, and we’ll be blogging about what we discover.

Exporting Beauty Pilkington’s Pottery and Tiles Until October 2012 Beautiful art pots and tiles made by Pilkington’s Tile and Pottery Company between 1893 and 1938. Grayson Perry Visual Dialogues Until 12 February 2012 We’ve bought a striking vase and print by Turner Prizewinning artist Grayson Perry. See them both on show alongside historic costume, prints and ceramics in a display, co-curated by a group of young people and artist Jim Medway.

Far, Far Away: a world of stories for families 2–28 August Tuesday–Sunday, 1–3pm First explore some of the paintings in the gallery to discover stories of enchantment and adventure. Then go up, up, up to the top floor and our enormous workshop space, Far, Far Away. Work together on story-inspired art activities and create an imaginary world. Bring your stories to life at our performance workshops. Some are for families with babies and toddlers and others for families with older children. See calendar for details.

Activities available anytime The Interactive Gallery is a handson introduction to real art. Pick up a story bag, borrow an explorer belt, or ask for a Heroes and Monsters pack from the information desk and set off on an arty adventure. Myth, Dream and Reality: The Human Form 1700–1920 This new permanent display has been installed in response to requests from gallery visitors to show works of art in the entrance space. It explores how artists have represented the human body over more than two centuries. The display was inspired by the casts from the Parthenon frieze given by George IV specifically to decorate the gallery’s entrance hall. It consists of historic works from the gallery’s art collection

but also includes the sculpture Young Man Standing (1963–77) by Leonard McComb, on loan from the Arts Council Collection. You can take a virtual tour of the entrance hall and find out more about the display and architecture via a new touchscreen at ground floor level. There is also a recorded audio described tour for visually impaired people. Visitors can pick up an Unspoken trail leaflet to explore

some of the paintings in more detail. The trail is the result of a project in which participants studied body language and relationships in art. This project was made possible with generous support from DCMS/Wolfson Galleries and Museums Improvement Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation Manchester Art Gallery Trust Unspoken is a partnership project between Manchester Art Gallery and Start, which is part of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. Start enables people to use art to improve, protect and maintain mental well-being. Paint supplied by Farrow & Ball, official paint sponsor of Manchester City Galleries.
