Horizon – Manama Toastmasters Club

From the President’s desk Dear toastmasters,

President: TM Thuraya Juma.

fellow

I am honored and privileged to serve you as President for a second term. However, with this privilege comes responsibilities. The main responsibility this time is huge and bigger than last term’s. This term coincides with the preparation of the 50th anniversary celebration of our beloved club. Hence, lots must be done to make 2014 a memorable year for the club. We chose a theme for the term that reflects the legacy of our club; "MTM…50 years of Excellence". For 50 years, Manama Toastmasters has been making a difference. Many leaders have graduated from the “Manama Toastmasters School of Leadership”. We will not deny that the club has had its share of ups and downs,

but regardless, we have managed to maintain the professionalism and high quality of meetings that our club is known for. Our goal is to continue with this legacy and to build on it. To do this, one of our goals this term is to have one remarkable meeting every month. Another goal is to promote Manama Toastmasters in the media. This is in addition to our main objective of preparing for our Golden Jubilee celebrations such that by the time July 2014 comes, the club will be ready to mark it in a fantastic and unforgettable way. Fellow toastmasters, one hand cannot clap so let us all put our hands together to achieve our goals and aims for our beloved Manama Toastmasters.

“It’s simply impossible to become a great leader without being a great communicator” Mike Myatt.

Best regards, TM Thuraya Juma President; January – June 2014.

The Horizon

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning and staying together is progress”. We cannot help but think of these words as we prepare to lead the club into this auspicious term where we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Manama Toastmasters has come a long way since its inception in 1964 and we intend to keep the fire burning!! It has been an exciting Year already and it kicked off with two of our members being in the top three in the Krypto Star Advanced Speakers Contest held in January. (See page 17).

We also held three exciting events in the form of the awards Ceremony, the Humourous Speech Contest and the International Speech Contest. (See pages 14, 15 and 16 respectively). Several Executive Committee members also attended the club officers training held in February to sharpen their leadership skills and take them a step closer to perfection! (See page 20). To help us “brush up” our International Speeches, TM Guraz Wankadia, as part of his Advanced Manual Project, brought us the renowned coach and trainer Loy Machedo all the way from Dubai. His training seems to have paid off as we witnessed our International Speech Contestants give moving, high quality speeches. For pictures on the exciting training workshop, turn to page 19.

together a membership kit as described on page 12. Lastly, we would like to send our get well wishes to one of our longest serving members, TM Kawther Al Taitoon who has unfortunately been unwell this term. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to having her back with us soon. We hope you enjoy reading this issue of Horizon – the first of our golden issues - and we look forward to releasing the next one soon. Please continue to send us your contributions and help us take Horizon to a whole new level. TM Hannah Karanja. Vice President Public Relations. January - June 2014

Our VP Membership has also been very busy with his recruitment drive and he inducted two new members In February in addition to putting

Horizon – Manama Toastmasters Club

"Its hard to wait around for something you know might never happen; but its harder to give up when you know its everything you want.” Some one said this..and I vouch by this..especially when it comes to toastmasters. I was initiated into this great forum by my old boss who had literally dragged me to the meeting of Manama toastmasters and there I felt like a child lost in the carnival! New faces..new experiences. Applause.. Applause everywhere! The brave me, slipped out of the meeting room during the break only to

come back after a "short period" of three months! Then it was a different experience. I was taken into the team of organising GTAC in Bahrain! And that too, when I had not even done my Ice Breaker! The experience was wonderful..right from conceptualizing the logo for the district conference in Bahrain..and designing the certificates, badges and even the backdrop! And how could I forget meeting the legendary speaker Mark Brown at close quarters! During the interaction with the most senior Toastmasters on the island and outside, I realized I had lost some thing very close to me..my INHIBITION! Today, when I look back, I feel proud.. Not of my achievements but being with this great movement..being a part of it..and thanking all those masters for having inculcated the challenge in me...

Today, the child who was lost at the carnival has grown up..to take on the mantle of an Area Governor..It has been a long way though..A journey from Manama Toastmasters..to Bahrain Toastmasters..then a self imposed exile from toastmasters for a short span of five plus years...Back again at my alma mater..Manama toastmasters..And today as the Area Governor of the first area in Bahrain...Area 3! Now I am euphoric!..simply because MY CLUB, has crossed 50 long years..2450 plus meetings! Rain or shine..And just to think, I too belong to this elite club gives me goose pimples..And as a humble and simple member, I assume any responsibility in helping to steer the Golden Jubilee celebrations to some thing UNFORGETTABLE! However, I still find pride in being referred to as a member of Manama Toastmasters!

“It’s not about how badly

TM Kishore Babu. you want it, it is about Area 3 Governor. how hard you are willing to work for it”

The Ex – Files; VP Membership In the upcoming months, we shall feature a member of the excom to share their goals for the term. In this issue, we feature our VP membership TM Ammar Madan.

This term is going to be a very busy term as we strive to increase our membership base. We realize that this is going to be very challenging given the fact that we have more than 50 clubs to compete with in Bahrain. Having said that, we are up to the challenge! Our unique selling

advantage stems from the fact that we have been around for 50 years and we have maintained our high standards through out. That is very impressive by any standards. In the first two months of the year, we have inducted two new members and we have other members in the pipe line waiting to be inducted in March. This term, we in the excom are working in a tight knit circle as we strive to promote our club. From my side as VP membership, I have introduced a guest book where I keep the contacts of ALL guests who visit our club and it does not end there! I make a point of following up on the guests and inviting them to come back. I also conduct informal Interviews with the guests and I get feedback from them on where we stand as a club.

50 Years of Excellence

I have also compiled all the VP membership information available on Toastmasters International’s website into a folder. I use this folder for easy reference and it will make my handover to the next VP membership smooth and easy. Lastly, we have designed a promotion flyer with all the necessary club information and we have forwarded this to all members. I encouraging all members to forward this to their friends. All in all, we are confident that this is going to be a fruitful term and I am very proud to be in the executive committee during this auspicious term. VP Membership: Ammar Maidan.

Toastmasters roles Open letter to Speakers and Role players from the GE of the day TM Asrar Merchant – Part 1. ."Being on time and in the right attire shows how seriously you take yourself, which is mostly a measure of how seriously people should take you." Dear Speakers,

Dear Toastmasters

Manama Members,

As your general evaluator, I humbly request every member to please come to the meeting on time and in formal attire. Our meetings start at 7:00pm sharp and we pride ourselves on our timing. Our accepted attire is strictly formal

You are going to speak about very interesting happenings, I am sure. Please make sure it stays interesting for us but putting effort into how you say it. Practice is the deciding factor between a great speech and an ordinary one. You decide which side you want your speech to be. I can never emphasize enough the importance of using your mentor. No one can deliver a speech to the best of his/her talent without the use of a mentor. Your mentor is your best way to discover and use your talent and grow as an individual, so again, you decide. You are a confident and intelligent speaker, you are different and you are really influential in escalating the quality of our lives, All the best in being yourself.

Dear Role Players, Kindly make sure you have an understanding of your role from your mentor. Make sure you have read the definitions and tasks of each role mentioned in the Competent Leadership manual. If you are yet unsure of how to present your role, please contact your mentor and discuss it with him/her. Be innovative with your role and be an example. If you need any inspiration, just think of how amazingly fulfilling it is, to pick up the most routine and simple task and do it in such a manner that you make jaws drop at your performance. I tell you, its an unparalleled pleasure. You are masters of the roles you have taken up, and the better news is, you have learned a lot from your and our previous endeavors in these roles. Time to show your quality in application. We trust your experience and intellect. All the best in being an example. Dear Readers: Tune in next month for the Part 2 of TM Asrar’s “words of wisdom”.

Awards night held on 8th February, 2014 Madame President TM Thuraya really outdid herself yet again. We are convinced more than ever that the word “mediocre” does not exist in her vocabulary. With her meticulous attention to detail, she and her right-handwoman TM Maisa transformed the usually bland looking boardroom into what now looked like a page from the garden scene in Alice in Wonderland. Talk of art imitating life! The evening kicked off with an opening from our resident poet TM Khalid Amin with a poem from the renowned American Poet Margaret Taylor-burroughs titled “What will your legacy be?” So the question is; What will MTMs legacy be? Are we going to build bridges for others to cross on? Food for thought… After a welcome speech from our former slash current president TM Thuraya, former VP Education slash current treasurer TM Laxman,

looking every bit the distinguished gentleman that he is, commended the club on its numerous accomplishments during the past term and the highlight (at least for him) was the International Day of Tolerance themed night that fell, ironically according to him, on his wedding anniversary.. Hmmm.. Men!! Special recognition went to our new DTM Manal Al Matrook. We all remember how she blew dust in our faces last year with her marathon speeches. Congratulations DTM Manal! You've worked hard and paid your dues... Our current Area Governor TM Kishore Babu took over to conduct the much awaited installation which saw the new excom pass the

Those who know TM Zakaria Sulaiman knew that we were in for a great laugh and of course advise. His advise to any man in distress was simple - Cry! And if you can’t, watch an Indian movie and not just any Indian movie - A classic Indian movie!. Our much awaited talk was by our guest of honour Dr. Claire Beckett-McInroy, a trainer, coach and mentor who showed all the traits of an outstanding public speaker; good body language, good voice modulation and of course good old fashioned humour... Thanks to Dr. McInroy, we now know how to decipher our audience... We now wish the new excom all the best of luck during this auspicious term.

Humourous Speech Contest held on 8th February, 2014 They say that humour is the solution to all our problems from traffic jams, to long queues in a fast food restaurant and even minor glitches that can threaten to spoil an evening. The proof was in the pudding during our Humourous Speech Contest as twists were untangled and in no time, the meeting was off to a start and in good time. By 7:30pm, Contest Chair TM Hannah Karanja had taken control from the president and she was good to go. Nothing was going to put a damper on our much awaited evening!! Once the contest kicked off, the speech topics were as diverse as the stars in our galaxy; mentor-less member TM Chris Noronha describing a date with a Toastmaster and TM Somaya Al Jowder sighing with relief at the realisation that her children were too short for the rides in Disney land (phew!!). TM Maisa was next with a story

about a donkey that was calm in the midst of mayhem while TM Asrar explained (and demonstrated) the true meaning of “back-to-you”. TM Rashid struck a cord with many middle children as he described his struggle with the "Middle Child Syndrome" while TM Amina described an encounter with airport immigration. Last but not least, TM May gave us a “lost in translation” true story.

With the complexities of the evening behind us, we were geared up for the International Speech Contest and we were ready to come back swinging… DTAC, make room for MTM!! By TM Hannah Karanja.

Finally, the announcement of the winner was met with thunderous uproar as the man! The myth! The legend! TM Khalid Amin walked up (in his mismatched black and brown shoes) to receive his trophy.

International Speech Contest held on 22nd February, 2014

On Saturday 22nd February 2014, as the clock struck 7, 7 (no pun intended) nervous yet excited contestants streamed into the overflowing boardroom with a look of “How did I get here?” on their faces. The evening kicked off with a Presidential address and an encouraging word from our Division C governor DTM Ashok Kumar after which our never overbudget and never behind schedule Contest Chair TM Madhavi took to the lectern and showed us how it should be done!! Now we know why they call her the queen.

Chief judge TM Isaac Mathew then gave the already anxious contestants the judging criteria after which all bets were off as

they took to the floor and entertained, informed and inspired us with ending comic relief without commercials…

Our deepest gratitude goes to each and every functionary who made the day possible.

First on stage was TM Maisa with a re-enactment of the night her son was born followed by TM Chris who almost drove us to tears with a moving speech about her mother while TM Hannah came up next with a lesson in CPR. (No. Not that CPR...)

In the end, all contestants and the club as a whole were winners. We now await the dates for the Area Contest where all contestants in Table Topics, Evaluation, Humourous and International Categories have promised to give it their best and nothing less!

Next in line was TM Guraz whose body made the perfect question mark followed by TM Asrar who kept us in suspense for a good two minutes or more and TM Amina reminded us of our parental responsibilities. TM Khalid Amin closed with a moving speech that truly demonstrated the importance of staging.

By TM Hananh Karanja.

From the TMs mouth; Krypto star Advanced Speech Contest to compete with due to the Area, Division and District contests weeding out the best to go forward to the higher level. So at Krypto Star, we were all there competing with one another. What a challenge! We really had to be prepared and ready to deliver.

Krypto Star competition was an excellent opportunity for our more advanced speakers - and I mean advanced in terms of having persevered through some of the advanced manuals. Might I add that some of those advanced manuals are a major challenge for any speaker, seasoned or inexperienced. They require a lot of preparation in comparison to the Competent Communication manuals. That said and done, it gave a chance for contest winners to battle against other contest winners who we do not all get

First one round, then a second round. So the challenge was to even consider and prepare a second speech in a very short time. Those of us who chose to deliver anew for the finals, had one week to prepare speech #2. Overall, I found the experience exhilarating, challenging and a most rewarding experience. Congratulations Krypton Advanced Club on your initiative!!! Looking forward to next year's challenge also. By TM Claire Cosgrove. First runner up: Krypto Star Advanced Speakers Contest.

Life Style

Tips for a good nights sleep by TM May Abdul Aziz. As we strive to be better leaders and communicators, we cannot underestimate the importance of a good nights sleep. In today's hectic world, a good nights sleep is becoming elusive and harder to achieve. As I researched on the topic, I stumbled upon a few tips on getting a good nights sleep that I hope will be beneficial to all Toastmasters. They are worth trying out. 1. Stick to a sleep routine/schedule: .

Go to bed and get up at the same time each day, including weekends. Routine is important; you want to train your mind/body with a good sleep routine. 2. Create a good sleeping environment no daytime activities in bed. This means no TV, eating, computer, or telephone. Train yourself to limit your bed-related activities and your mind/body will “think” sleep in bed 3. Relaxing ritual before sleep: Reading, taking a bath, listening to music…whatever it is for you, do something comforting and relaxing before sleep. 4. Avoid Stimulants: you want to avoid caffeine 3-4 hours prior to sleep. 5. Limit food intake: Avoid large meals or foods that cause indigestion prior to sleep. 6. Limit liquid intake: Generally avoid liquid intake 3-4 hours prior to sleep. This helps avoid having to get up due to nighttime urgency. This includes alcohol.

7. Bedroom temperature: A cooler room is better for sleeping. 8. Naps: Try to avoid naps later in the day. Generally speaking, no naps after 3 p.m. 9. Different beds: Though this may not be the most appealing idea at first, you may want to try sleeping in a different bed than your spouse, particularly if your spouse acts out his or her dreams. Many of these tips for good sleep hygiene take some practice and some “getting used to” before they are helpful. Keep at it; it can take some time to change your routines and habits. After you have given it a try and you are finding that you are still having trouble getting enough quality sleep it may be a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider. Our next 50 years… This term, we want to know what future Toastmasters think about public speaking. For this issue, we caught up with three potential future Toastmasters and this is what they had to say.

Daughter of TM Ed

“Each day of our lives, we make deposits in the memory banks of our children”. Charles R. Swindall.

Gaurav Singh (Standing): “I like the big meeting room and the environment where everyone gets an opportunity to speak at least once. I believe that at toastmasters we can enhance our knowledge. I like the break time, nice tempting refreshments and also MTM get-togethers. I enjoyed the visit to Al Areen park and the fun fest. I would like to join Toastmasters one day” Raghav Singh (Seated): “I would like to be a toastmaster one day but sometimes, I get bored sitting continuously in one place for one hour”.

“I think that toastmasters is where people can become confident among new people and show what they can do. I would be very excited to become a toastmaster when I grow up because I feel confident when people are watching me make a speech or doing something. Also, I have a lot of encouragement and support from my parents whose advise is not to be afraid in front of people. Just pretend you are the only person in the room.”

Horizon – Manama Toastmasters Club

History of Toastmasters Toastmasters International. Toastmasters International was started In the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana California by The founder Dr. Ralph C. Smeldley in 1924. Working as a director of education, Dr. Ralph C. Smedley began to notice that the young patrons needed training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings and hence a club was born. News of the club soon spread and other clubs were born in other countries. Today, Toastmasters Internaitional is found in 122 countries and it continues to strive in the 21st Century. Manama club.
