Crackdown on drinking in public in Maltby

Maltby Christmas Lights were switched on by Kevin Barron MP

Consultation is to begin soon on plans to crackdown on public drinking in Maltby. Rotherham councillors agreed last month to introduce a Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) in Maltby which will give police extra power to deal with street drinkers, and their recommendations were subsequently approved by the licensing board. A statutory consultation will now follow. This will involve South Yorkshire Police, licensees of any licensed premises in the area and the owners and occupiers of any land identified which may be affected. DPPOs give both police and police community support officers the power to confiscate alcohol – including unopened containers – from anyone deemed to be causing

“nuisance, annoyance or disorder”. Those who fail to comply could be given a penalty notice for £50 or arrested and fined up to £500. The order would cover selected urban areas, parks, waterways and other identified public spaces. In his report to councillors Steve Parry, Rotherham Council’s Neighbourhood Crime and Justice Manager, said in order to include a place in a DPPO order the authority must be satisfied that nuisance or annoyance to members of the public or disorder has been associated with alcohol consumption in that certain place. He said: “There is no doubt that alcohol is a contributory factor in anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, nuisance and public place violent crime.

“It also increases the fear of crime and further deterioration of public areas and acts as a catalyst for an increase in the incidents of alcohol and drug abuse and more serious crimes.” According to the report residents who live in areas with DPPOs are “strongly in favour” of them because “they send out a clear message of the intent of the police, council and partners to tackle alcohol related crime and disorder.” The council had originally wanted to introduce a boroughwide order but it was decided that such a move was not supported and instead a single multi-location order was proposed instead. A DPPO is already in place in Rotherham Town Centre and the council wants

to extend its boundaries. Maltby town councillor Keith Stringer welcomed an introduction of a DPPO order in the town. He said “In my opinion, this order is the first step in making people aware that alcohol doesn’t solve problems and it never will. “Taking the alcohol from these people on the streets may deter any immediate problems and save people from becoming involved with police action. “But in my opinion, the answer to these problems is through creating more employment for people and creating the unavailability of cheap alcohol. “This is a nationwide problem that the present Government has to address but won’t be solved by redundancies and less jobs.”

Community News Special award for Cliff Hills Community Action Group

Pauline Betts brings 17 years experience as a professional florist to the Art Florist outlet at Queens Corner, Maltby. Consequently she is able to offer a full range of services for every occasion, including weddings and funerals. On the run up to Christmas she, and daughter Charlene who is helping out, will be offering Christmas displays, centrepieces and handmade wreaths.

An area of Maltby, off Addison Road, is the latest site to be awarded Living Streets’ Neighbourhood Award. The planting event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham. Receiving the plaque is Ken Markham from the Cliff Hills Community Action Group. Also pictured are pupils and staff from Maltby Redwood J & I school, Paul Gibson – Senior Transprotation Manager RMBC, and Derek Reilly also from the Cliff Hills Group. This event was to celebrate the improvements made around the Laburnum Parade area this year, thanks to the campaign by the group for better walking conditions and access to the shops across Addison Road.

Zumba charity payout

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and The National Autistic Society have benefited to the tune of £5,747.68 thanks to a Zumbathon organised by a Maltby instructor. Lisa Roberts, who teacher Zumba in Maltby, was behind the two hour event back at a Rotherham nightclub in September.

The money has now all been collected and this week Lisa revealed that the charities will soon be contacted. Lisa, who was helped at the event by Sarah Tatterfield, who teaches in Thurcroft and Louise Fuller, who works for Dinnington-based Inter Shape said: “It was our first charity Zumba event and the atmosphere was amazing.”

Maltby Environmental Group The main purpose of Maltby Environmental Group’s November meeting was to review work on this summer’s Local Development Framework Consultation. Housing and Employment Land comments were reviewed and approved and the group also looked at the details of the designation of Local Wildlife Sites, Regionally Important Geological Sites and at proposals on Conservation Areas. The designations were welcomed although there was recognition that the upper reaches of the Maltby Dike system merited further work. MEG members had been invited to attend a meeting of the Crags Group, to be held at Maltby Services Centre Downstairs Meeting Room at 10am on Wednesday 30th November 2011 when the LWS and RIGS designations would be discussed. The Hon Sec briefly drew attention to the Green Infrastructure proposals put forward by Natural England

and reported on their current deficiencies. In addition to work on the LDF, he group also discussed the pros and cons of the suggested Designated Public Place Orders proposed for some of Rotherham’s outlying communities, including Maltby. A written question was framed, for the attention of the November Wentworth Valley Area Assembly Meeting, regarding the intended local consultation process regarding the precise boundaries of the DPPO area. There was also discussion regarding the proposed developments at Maltby Academy and Lilly Hall Junior School and their likely impact on access and car parking in neighbouring streets. The recent rise in dog fouling also came under discussion and concern was expressed regarding the difficulties experienced in trying to meet the requirements for safe disposalby recycling of spent low-energy light bulbs.

Flowers of Maltby Crags The Wesley Centre is currently hosting a display of Thomas Best’s exquisite photographs which celebrate the flowers of the, recently designated, Wood Lee Common Local Wildlife Site. Staged under the auspices of the Maltby Wood Lee Common and Crags Meadow Steering Group, the display can be viewed during normal office hours. It includes pictures taken on Maltby Crags, Crags Meadow and Wood Lee.

Award for Denise Sheffield & Hallamshire FA and the Football Association presented Denise Hicks from Maltby with a Safeguarding Star award at the recent England’s Women game against Serbia at Doncaster Rover’s Keepmoat Stadium. Denise, a club welfare officer for Maltby Juniors and the league welfare officer for the Sheffield & District Under 18’s league, was presented with the award on the pitch at halftime by Brian Jones, Sheffield & Hallamshire FA chairman and Sue Hough, chairperson of the Women’s Committee, and received an ovation from the 4,000 supporters.

It was a stunning turnout at Remembrance Sunday in Maltby last month. On a bitterly cold day tens of hundreds of residents marched to and from the Cenotaph overlooking the Crags. Wreaths were laid by local politicians and services families.

The young men and women of England They marched in thousands galore In answer to the call of the nation And no-one could them wish more The soldiers and sailors and airmen All fought in their turn you’ll agree For honour and peace in all Europe And England the land of the free

The Heroes of England Now thousands were then taken prisoner Suffered hunger and starvation we hear But not for want of pluck and courage For the enemy they never did fear

In prison camps they were shattered and Let us pay a tribute to the fallen shaken The lads who have given their life Lost everything even their nerve 419 heart-broken OXC Maltby mothers News half property ad 10:33 Left andpage sweethearts And 2/6/10 were made to takePage pick1and shovel And in some cases children and wife To dig a murdered comrade’s grave

And now that the cruel war has ended And peace once more in our land They must be given a square deal in industry And compensated for their brilliant stand We have seen a lot of our heroes With one eye one arm or one leg After all they have done for their country Go begging for their daily bread

Now we cannot have this any longer And a chance for them all we must see Of having a honest good living In England the land of the free.

Denise offers gifts for all With Christmas and New Year around the corner the festive season is getting into full swing. Fortunately for Maltby residents the solution to problems about presents and party celebrations is close to hand. Denise Gillott opened The Gift Box on Laburnum Parade (off Addison Road) in spring 2010 and has been building her business ever since with enthusiasm and some ground breaking ideas.. “I’ve lived in Maltby for over six years and am proud to run a local business that benefits local people saving them time and money by not having to commute to bigger and more expensive retail outlets,” says Denise who tells us she gets great feedback from all her customers, who appreciate the service she provides. Denise was a registered nurse before taking the opportunity to open the card and gift shop. “I saw a chance to take on a less stressful career, which enabled me to be more flexible in supporting my autistic daughter through difficult times,” she explained. In her spare time Denise fund raises for the National Autistic Society. The shop sells greeting cards, gifts, stationary, helium balloons, party wear, cake decorations, cakes made to order, and offers a mug printing service. “We also have a helium balloon service for parties and work in association with P.A.L.S. customised vehicles, run by my sister and husband, ” said Denise. P.A.L.S. vehicles include pink

convertables and the well known ‘Trotter Van’. Keeping up with modern ways of online selling is a must for the survival of businesses today, and Denise has recently launched a shop website to sell on line, and a business ebay shop. “The aim of this is to ensure continued growth and enable me to offer more hours to my staff and hopefully set on new staff. I see this as very important, already the business has enabled me to help the economy by employing staff one of whom has been long term unemployed.” Denise has also shown her initiative by recently entering a competition to win three months free advertising in all local papers. “The criteria was that the business was between one and three years old. One of the entries will be picked to be mentored by ‘dragon’ Deborah Meadan for a set term,” Denise explained. “Finally, may I add I am a single parent and proud to show what women can achieve on their own with a little determination and hard work. I hope I can inspire others to realise their potential.” The Gift Shop is now open Sundays 2pm 6.30. Right: Denise

Money Trees at Maltby Garden Centre Maltby Garden Centre on Braithwell Road has been busy on the build-up to Christmas raising funds for charity. Staff members Lynn Robinson and Eileen Allen have raised over £500 for Bluebell Childrens’ Hospice. “We could not have done it without the generosity of our lovely customers,” said Lynn. Meanwhile Cllr Keith Stringer received a gift to raffle at the Maltby Christmas Lights Switch on Fair, in aid of the National Autistic Society. “It is a very generous and helpful gesture,” said Cllr Stringer.

Letters & Comment Editorial As the end of the year approaches we can look back on interesting times in Maltby. The major development has been the announcement of plans for building work at the Academy, which is emphasised in our special wrap this month. Consultation is underway and the whole community will be able to have input into the exciting plans. Although the local economy is still sluggish a number of new businesses have emerged showing the towns resilient nature. With that in moind we wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Wetherspoon announcement on Queens Hotel Wetherspoon has started redevelopment work on the Queens Hotel and aims to have the newlook pub open on March 27. The development cost is £1.5 million and 45 jobs will be created. At the present time the company is not sure whether the historic name will be retained, or whether it will be re-named,this has still to be decided. Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ We are delighted to have started building work on the new pub. “Wetherspoon has been keen to open one of its pubs in Maltby for a number of years and are pleased to have acquired such an excellent site. “We believe that our new pub will be a good addition to the town.”

Local History Society On Thursday 17th November, more than 50 members and friends of Maltby Local History Society gathered to listen to a talk given by Professor David Hey. In her opening remarks, Society Chair, Alice Rodgers, expressed appreciation of Professor Hey’s three decades of support for the group. Now possessed of an international reputation in the world of Family and Local History, he was far less well known when , thirty years ago, he came to Maltby to address the newly founded Local History Society. This return visit honoured that association and was a particular privilege for the group. Professor Hey’s topic was ‘Roche Abbey, The King’s Wood and Lindrick’. It drew on research he had undertaken in association with the eminent botanist, John Rodwell, on the ancient native large–leaved lime trees of the southern Magnesian Limestone in South Yorkshire. Through a study of medieval documents , modern place names and locations where native lime trees still grow, Professor Hey had identified the general location of the ancient Anglian district name ‘LIndrick’ (which means ‘ lime tree ridge’) with the area including Tickhill, Roche Abbey, the course of Anston Brook and the north Nottinghamshire village of Carlton. Maltby Local History Society will not be meeting in December but will be back at Maltby Library at 2pm on Thursday 19th January for an informal session which will include a contribution by retired pit nurse, Marie Horner and a display of old photographs by courtesy of Trevor Whitehouse.

Catnapping The last few months have seen a spate of cat thefts in Maltby. Cat owners are being advised to keep an eye on their pets wherever possible. Kittens too have fallen foul of the thieves.

• WE’RE DOWN UNDER! Sir maltby.news found its way to Adelaide, South Australia sent to me by a Mr. George Johnson and his wife Freda a well known family in Maltby . Its with great sadness I read in the Maltby news November 2011 Issue that my old school teacher Walter Smith has passed away. I recall him first coming to Maltby Hall Secondary School along with another fine teacher Mr. Fletcher who also served in world war two. In the 1940s teachers had the respect of their pupils and a bond was formed. Teachers wore suits, and had an air of authority about them. Maltby Hall school at the time Mr. Smith taught there was blessed with a team of very good teaching staff which included a Mr. Tommy Stubbs (who went on to be head master at Wickersley primary school - a fine cricketer too) Mr. Horsefield , Mr. Shaw , Mr. Shore , Miss Bingham and Harry Felton was the head master I recall him well - using his cane on me for a misdemeanour - would this occur today? Not likely! I recall he had red

Award Presentation for the Trickii Twista students from Maltby Four Maltby Academy Design Technology students, Martha Gregory, Darcie Lacey, Casey Turner and Leigh Roberts, have been winning competitions with their Trickii Twista game and continue to go from strength to strength. Having already won a total of £2,800 so far the team are now in the finals of the Big Bang Fair to be held at the NEC Birmingham in March next year.

Their most recent success was through a company called REMAP, a charity organisation that helps people with disabilities. The Trickii Twista team won an award for an Enterprise related project which is made for people with disabilities. Trickii Twista is a game they developed as a hand eye coordination aid that does not use batteries and helps to develop lost skills. They

designed a game that was hand held and in which you have to move a spinner around obstacles and get to a finish point by jumping the spinner at the end. The students then worked at developing their game further and came up with improvements and a two player version to help develop communication skills between players. KH

Her invitation, from the office of the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire earlier this year, for Gillian and her husband Martyn was a great surprise. The Theatre School performs on a regular basis for numerous local charities.

Maltbees win at last THE Maltbees were celebrating their first ever victory after a win in a friendly over Braithwell Ladies. The Maltbees netball team, whom we highlighted last month, have recorded their first win of the season with a 14-12 victory over Braithwell Ladies. They had suffered a heavy defeat earlier in the season to their local rivals and Leah Carratt described the victory as a “morale booster”. Leah is currently out of the side after fracturing a metatarsal and snapped ligaments.

Tai Chi at the Edward Dunn The Tai Chi for mobility group which meets at The Edward Dunn Centre has been very successful and continues to run on a self-funding basis now that the original grant has finished. The feedback from the Falls Prevention Team at Rotherham PCT has been very positive for this new initiative. New members are welcome as the group need to keep recruitment high so that they can continue to run. Many people attending the group have seen their health has greatly improved. Tai Chi is a form of gentle and slow exercise which helps to develop effective use of the body and improves general health and well-being. It helps to improve muscle tone, mental focus, co-ordination and balance, general levels of vitality, increased flexibility and spatial awareness. The NHS now recommends Tai Chi for helping to prevent falls. For further information contact: David Lipka on (0114) 2496511 or 07989 928 675. Classes are Thursdays 11.00-12.30

Niaomi gets Yorkshire first team call Seventeen Year old Maltby Academy “A” Level student Niaomi Twiss realised one of her ambitions late in the 2011 cricket season when she received a dramatic late call up to the Yorkshire Womens First Team. Just minutes after helping Maltby Miners Wefare Cricket Club Men’s second eleven to a thrilling one wicket win at Houghton Main in the South Yorkshire Premier League,

Niaomi received a call from Yorkshire Captain, Salliann Briggs, to report to the Yorkshire first team hotel that evening in order to make her debut the following day. The only slight difficulty in meeting this request was that the team’s hotel was in Reading and it was almost midnight before Niaomi booked in at hotel reception. The next morning Niaomi lined up with the Yorkshire team to face

Berkshire in Division One of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) County Championship at Hungerford. Only one of the current England squad does not play for one of the six teams in the elite first division. The Yorkshire side contained three current England players in Katherine Brunt, Jenny Gunn and Danielle Hazell; whilst the Berkshire team were represented by two current internationals in Isa Guha and Heather Knight. Yorkshire won the 50 over per side match easily and whilst Niaomi fielded very well unsurprisingly she was not asked to bat or bowl. Niaomi thought that it would be a while before she was asked to represent the first team again; in fact it was only seven days as she was selected to play in the final match of the season against Nottinghamshire at Harrogate. Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat on a cold very blustery day. Niaomi was informed that she was to bat at number eight and thus she duly settled down expecting to watch the her experienced colleagues make the Nottinghamshire team chase leather. To her surprise after six overs she had to pad up as Yorkshire plummeted to 15 for 4 wickets. Niaomi’s nerves were eased somewhat as England stars Brunt and Hazell compiled a terrific century partnership. With 15 overs to go and the score standing at 150 for 6, Niaomi’s moment arrived and she strode out to the crease to undertake her debut knock for the first team. Her arrival at the crease coincided with the Nottinghamshire opening

bowlers, England Academy players Sonia Odedra and Rebecca Widdowson, being requested to bowl their second spells of the day. After a nervy start, Niaomi settled down and batted out the rest of the overs, compiling a fine unbeaten 31 runs. Unsurprisingly she is still pinching herself that her first knock for the county went so well. All rounder, Niaomi had a good season for Yorkshire under 17’s in 2011. She took 10 wickets against various other counties producing some excellent bowling displays all summer. She also made a match winning contribution with the bat against Wales in Llanelli and took several terrific catches as the under 17’s progressed to the two day National Championships Finals in late August. Unfortunately Yorkshire was well beaten by both Sussex and Northamptonshire and finished fourth overall. At the start of the 2011 Niaomi had made a bold decision to test herself and play her women’s club cricket in the ECB Women’s Premier League – Northern Section by joining Sheffield United Cricket Club Ladies Team. The standard in this league is very high and most teams have a fair selection of senior county players. Niaomi thoroughly enjoyed the new challenge, although not unsurprisingly she did not have success every week. She did, however, display her ability with both bat and ball on several occasions, most notably in a brilliant 63 on a wet track against Staffordshire team, Meir Heath. This knock received rave reviews from both players and

officials at the match. She also batted very well in the league decider against Newark (Ransom and Miles) Cricket Club. Sheffield United won the game and lifted the Northern Section trophy for the very first time. This success in turn led to the opportunity to play the Premier League - Southern Section winners, Finchley Guns, in the ECB Women’s National Premier League final at High Wycombe Cricket Club. Sheffield performed excellently in the final but were totally “outgunned” by Finchley thanks mainly to an unbroken 200 run partnership between England stars, Danielle Wyatt and Charlotte Edwards. Niaomi’s home club is Maltby Miners Welfare Cricket Club. She played the majority of the games for the Men’s Second Team in 2011. Niaomi captured 16 wickets from the 70 overs she delivered, conceding an average of less than 3.5 runs per over. She also made several important contributions with the bat often facing bowling far quicker than that seen in any standard of women’s cricket. Niaomi’s ambition for the 2012 season is to try to establish herself in the Yorkshire First Team, although this will not be easy given the level of talent the county can call on. Outside of Cricket, she would rather like to get her “A” Levels as well! Naiomi also received the Bowling Award for Yorkshire U-17s from Paul Topham Secretary of the Yorkshire Cricket Board earlier this year at Headingley.
