wood78 – the race goes on It started with a dream - or more specifically - two dreams ... for one thing we had been planning for years already to go on a skitour all the way to the Lago di Garda. And the other thing was that, after five years, we felt like it was time to go back to our roots: we wanted to return to that remote village in the mountains with the single lonely platter lift where it all started ... We wanted to go back to Maloja. While in the Chiemgau the winter was late in coming, the Lago di Garda region recorded the most snowfall in 30 years. All those bike routes we are so familiar with, had completely disappeared under the snow and had turned into great paths for climbing up. For the first time we experienced the Monte Stivo and the Baldo descents on downhill skis. But even when we bouldered or biked the winterworld of the lake region was good for surprises. The unusual combination of deep snow and absolute quiet and stillness was overwhelming. And in the Upper Engadin the weather was kind to us - almost too kind. The connecting roads from and to Maloja were closed. The inhabitants were cut off from the rest of the world. Still, we were confident the pass would would be open by the time we got there ... lo and behold, this was not true. What to do? We fervently searched for alternatives to get there - horses and sleds, skido, motorboat? We didn‘t give up. Finally some natives offered to fly us into Maloja with their work helicopter. And that‘s just what we did. Was that ever an awesome experience ... to see the lake and all that beautiful country from above! This was probably one of the most emotional photo shoots we ever had. We are especially happy to be able to share our experiences with you in this catalogue, because ... „that‘s how we roll“.
Am Anfang war ein Traum ... das heißt ... eigentlich waren es zwei – zum Einen haben wir uns schon seit Jahren gewünscht, mal eine Skitour am Gardasee zu bestreiten, und zum Anderen wollten wir nach fünf Jahren gerne noch einmal zurück zu unseren Wurzeln: in das kleine Bergdorf Maloja mit dem einsamen, alten Tellerlift an dem alles begann … Während der Winter bei uns im Chiemgau etwas auf sich warten ließ, erlebte die Gardasee-Region den schneereichsten Winter seit 30 Jahren. All die bekannten Bike-Routen versanken im Schnee und boten uns herrliche Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten. So erlebten wir dann z.B. die Monte Stivo und –Baldo Abfahrt mal Downhill auf Skiern. Aber auch beim Bouldern oder mit dem Bike hielt die Gardasee Winterwelt jede Menge Überraschungen für uns bereit. Die Kombination aus meterhohem Schnee und der ungewöhnlichen Stille hat uns alle sehr beeindruckt. Auch im Oberengadin meinte es das Wetter gut mit uns – fast ein bisschen zu gut, denn die Schweizer Berg-Region ertrank zu diesem Zeitpunkt fast im Schnee. Alle Verbindungsstraßen von- und nach Maloja waren gesperrt ... die Bewohner dort waren quasi von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. Dennoch waren wir zuversichtlich, dass die Pass-Straßen bis zu unserer Ankunft dort geöffnet sein werden ... leider war dem nicht so. Was tun? Wir suchten fieberhaft nach Alternativen, um dorthin zu kommen - Pferdeschlitten, Skido, Motorboot? Wir gaben nicht auf. Schließlich boten uns ein paar Einheimische ihre Hilfe an, uns mit dem Arbeiter-Heli nach Maloja einzufliegen. So haben wir’s dann auch gemacht ... und es war ein wahnsinns Erlebnis, den Silser See und die umliegende Landschaft aus der Vogel-Perspektive zu sehen. Für uns war dieses Shooting sicherlich eines der emotionalsten, das wir je hatten. Wir freuen uns daher sehr, unsere Erlebnisse in diesem Katalog mit Euch teilen zu dürfen, denn ... that’s how we roll“. Take care - your malojans
