What is the MalmöLund Region?

The region has a strong business culture, a high density of expertise and excellent connections to major markets. However, the great opportunities and numerous possibilities also entail challenges and cooperation is therefore essential. In the MalmöLund Region, we are 11 municipalities working together to optimise and achieve the potential of the entire region. Acting together enables opportunities that each municipality would not be in a position to offer on its own.

The MalmöLund Region is a body for political cooperation led by the municipal leaderships in Burlöv, Eslöv, Höör, Kävlinge, Lomma, Lund, Malmö, Staffanstorp, Svedala, Trelleborg and Vellinge. It is located in the south-western corner of Skåne, Sweden’s most southerly located county. Together we develop overarching strategies which highlight the entire region’s strengths and breadth and create added value by cooperating in practical issues.

PARTICIPATION AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL The MalmöLund Region is managed by a board, with a chairmanship shared by Malmö and Lund. The board includes the Chair of the Executive Committee and a representative of the opposition from each municipality. Decisions are made by consensus. All municipalities have equal influence and activities are based on their active participation.

This brochure is aimed both at companies that are already active in the MalmöLund Region and businesses interested in starting up in the region.

We hope that the facts and statistics in the brochure will provide guidance and stimulate interest.

The MalmöLund Region Part of Skåne and the Öresund region The MalmöLund Region is part of the Öresund region, which comprises both Sweden and Denmark. The Öresund region has the largest population and is the most densely populated metropolitan region in the Nordic countries.

It also has the biggest labour market in northern Europe with 1.8 million people. With good access to well-educated workers and many exciting job opportunities within reasonable commuting distance, this offers great potential to both the business community and private individuals.

COMMUTING WITHIN THE REGION There is a very extensive, complex exchange of workers between the cities in the region, with flows in all directions. Good transport links and relatively short distances enable this and make the region an exciting and attractive place to live and work.

With a well-developed network of cycle paths and the opportunity to bring bikes on the train, the region offers excellent opportunities for commuting by bike. One of the most important cycle routes in the region links Malmö and Lund. Approximately 2,340 people use the route on a daily basis.

MAJOR COMMUTING ROUTES The MalmöLund Region has major commuting routes that link the municipalities in the region and connect the region with the rest of Skåne, southern Sweden and Copenhagen.

REGIONAL SUPERBUS CONCEPT Region Skåne is planning a regional superbus concept with the aim of combining the advantages of railbound transport with a conventional bus system.

The benefits of the concept include high capacity, reliability and enhanced service and comfort for passengers.

The MalmöLund Region Major infrastructure investments in the region

The MalmöLund Region has strong population growth and a growing business community. This means challenges for the transport system and requires investments. Several major projects have recently been completed and new investments are in full swing. As a result, the MalmöLund Region is further enhancing its position as a growth engine in Sweden to the benefit of both the business community and the local population.

IMPROVED CONNECTIONS WITH HIGH-SPEED RAIL The Swedish Government has decided to build a high-speed railway connecting Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg. Once completed, the journey from Malmö to Stockholm will take 2.5 hours. Regional express trains will also use the new tracks.

This means a shorter journey time and better accessibility throughout the MalmöLund Region. An additional benefit of a new main line is that existing tracks can be used better for transporting goods. This will be highly beneficial for the business community. The new stations will also generate investment in housing and connecting infrastructure.

MAJOR INVESTMENT IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT Malmö and Trelleborg will have a fast, modern rail link when commuter traffic starts operating on Trelleborgsbanan. Vellinge Municipality will also profit with two new stations along the route. The first section will open in 2015. In another part of the MalmöLund Region, Lommabanan is being upgraded to handle goods transport better and allow for passenger traffic, including new stations. These two initiatives mean that tens of thousands of commuters will be able to take the train instead of the car. This also releases capacity on the road network.

Malmö will also make better use of existing goods tracks. The plan is to build new stations on Kontinentalbanan, which runs through central parts of Malmö. This will create a Malmö Ring line to complement Citytunneln and the entire city will be linked together with passenger rail transport. Work is also continuing in Malmö on the Malmö express bus concept, the most modern bus route in Sweden.

Investments to increase traffic also require existing bottlenecks to be resolved. One such bottleneck is the rail section between Malmö and Lund which will be extended from two to four tracks. This will create capacity for more frequent services and reduce the risk of delays. There are also plans to build a cycle expressway beside the new tracks.

COPENHAGEN-MALMÖ PORT The ports of Malmö and Copenhagen formed a joint company in 2001. From the beginning, major investments have been made to boost capacity, in particular in Norra Hamnen in Malmö, which opened in 2011 and has an area of 430,000 square metres. The plan is to expand the port by an additional 750,000 square metres, an investment of SEK 260 million, which will enable trucks to avoid the city centre when on their way to and from the port. The aim is also for the new multimodal terminal to increase the proportion of goods transport by rail.

TRELLEBORG PORT Trelleborg Port is one of the biggest RoRo and ferry ports in Scandinavia. Like Malmö Port, it is part of the core network in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). It is one of Swedish industry’s most important links to the market in the rest of Europe and handled around 10 million tonnes of goods in 2013. Trelleborg Port is undergoing an extensive expansion and relocation process. The investments, which amount to approximately SEK 417 million, will lead to Trelleborg Port reinforcing its position in the Baltic region.

Additional aims of the project are to transform valuable land in the current port area and improve the environment in central parts of the city.

An estimated 3,000-4,000 researchers and scientists from all over the world will work in and around the new research facilities.

World centre for materials research in Lund The world’s leading centre for materials research is being built in Lund. ESS - European Spallation Source – a European research partnership of 17 countries. The research which will be conducted here will study the smallest building blocks in the natural world. The results will revolutionise developments in a number of areas such as nanotechnology, life sciences and new materials.

MAX IV is a Swedish synchrotron light facility that supplements ESS. It was initiated by Lund University, the Swedish Research Council, Region Skåne and Vinnova (Sweden’s innovation agency).

MAX IV uses powerful X-rays to make the invisible visible. ESS functions as a gigantic microscope which analyses samples at atomic and molecular levels. MAX IV will be opened in 2016 and ESS will begin operating in 2020.

ESS and MAX IV will have a major impact on the MalmöLund Region and Sweden. 3,000-4,000 researchers and scientists are expected to use the facilities every year. Companies can make use of the research results to develop new products. In turn, this will boost demand for services, labour, homes and infrastructure.

Science Village Scandinavia will be built between MAX IV and ESS. It will be an international research environment with a Science Centre, Business Centre and premises for laboratories, administration, service and accommodation.

Business Strong industries creating advantages We are good at many things in the MalmöLund Region. A significant business community and expert knowhow in the food and packaging industries are part of the region’s DNA. Close collaboration between universities, hospitals and the business community has been the breeding ground for strong pharmaceutical research and development. Technical knowhow in the industry as well as in the educational sector has established IT as one of the region’s strongest industries.

This combined with technical development and care about our region and the environment has resulted in significant cleantech knowhow. The geographical position of the region has strengthened south-western Skåne as a hub for logistics in northern Europe. The region also has a growing visitor industry which has been boosted in recent years by strong development in the retail sector and the focus on congress and conference opportunities.

VISITOR INDUSTRY Universities and institutes of higher education, investments in facilities such as ESS and MAX IV, a large number of international head offices, major exchange within the EU and increased globalisation, have given the visitor industry in the region a massive boost. Efforts to attract international conferences and offer exciting experiences are being made possible by means of increased investment in hotel capacity and cultural and conference facilities. One good example of this is Malmö Live, Malmö’s new concert and conference centre.

RETAIL The MalmöLund Region is an established shopping destination, offering lively city centres and attractive large shopping centres. In recent years, the development in the retail sector has made a positive contribution to an increase in investment in both existing and new shopping destinations, establishing international shopping concepts in the region and, in particular, offering all visitors an incredibly wide range of products in a concentrated area.

LOGISTICS Good infrastructure and logistics are essential to a strong business community, and our region is an established logistics hub in northern Europe.

Trelleborg Port and Malmö Port, in partnership with Copenhagen Port, create great conditions for importing and exporting all over the world in addition to being strong ferry and cruise ship destinations. In combination with well-developed rail infrastructure and international airports, the region boasts great expertise and a virtually limitless range of transport and logistics solutions.

IT AND TELECOMS In recent years, the IT industry in the MalmöLund Region has undergone a transformation. Major global players have been challenged by a large number of small and medium-sized companies with focus on consultancy and mobile services, as well as development of applications, web and games. Media Evolution and Mobile Heights are established networks with the ambition to help their members become successful world leaders in the field.

LIFE SCIENCE Universities and university hospitals are good platforms for research and development of new medicines. International pharmaceutical companies and the private and public health care sectors can recruit skilled, highly educated employees, while entrepreneurs can convert research projects into future treatments against diseases.

The Öresund-based Medicon Valley is one of the strongest life science networks in Europe.

FOOD Few industries are as closely linked with our part of Skåne as the food industry. The MalmöLund Region has a number of large, leading food companies and is a good breeding ground for research and innovators to develop the food technology and foods of the future. Skåne Food Innovation Network (Skånes Livsmedelsakademi) is an umbrella organisation for the industry and has the ambition to increase the rate of innovation and bolster cooperation among its members.

CLEANTECH

PACKAGING The packaging industry is well established and has been a major part of the business community in the region for the past hundred years. With the aim to develop packaging solutions for the future, Packbridge is a recently founded network of over 100 corporate members from both the packaging and logistics industries.

Several municipalities and companies have a strong ambition to manage what we have for free in the region. Investments in environmental engineering, expansion of alternative energy sources and the development of cleantech partnerships are essential to sustainable social development.

There are several different networks in this field with both municipal and private initiators. Examples include Malmö Cleantech City, a partnership between companies in the industry, and Sustainable Business Hub, which has over 100 member companies in the region.

Business is growing in the region. With investments such as ESS and MAX IV, as well as focused strategic initiatives by both the public sector and the private business community, we are seeing a steady increase in the number of new jobs on the labour market. The number of new companies has also increased since 2012, indicating positive growth in the region.

The visitor industry is one sector growing fast as a result of these investments. More and more companies and organisations are choosing to spend large sums on meetings and experiences for their employees and customers in the region. We also continue to see increased demand for event and conference opportunities.

The region has a wide range of trade fair facilities and multi-purpose arenas for various types of events and the hotel sector is currently undergoing a dramatic expansion.

In Malmö alone, the number of hotel beds will grow by a third by 2016 and the recently opened Malmö Live combines concerts, conferences and a hotel under one roof.

The strategy is clear – to attract large international conferences and offer the inhabitants of the region an exciting range of activities in a number of different environments.

Collaboration to create a favourable business climate Growth and development require close collaboration between municipalities, the business community and institutes of higher education, thereby promoting dynamism and technological advances. The MalmöLund region has a number of different arenas and opportunities for collaboration in which shared challenges become creative solutions.

ACHIEVING MORE BY WORKING TOGETHER In terms of global competition and growth opportunities, it is important to be able to offer both individuals and companies exciting development opportunities. Access to education and skilled labour, high demand for goods and services and a well-developed infrastructure are some of the components that are essential for a good business climate. Maintaining and developing these fundaments require collaboration between municipalities and the business community.

The municipalities in the MalmöLund Region strive to raise your profile as a business owner and showcase how the business community contributes to society. This is predominantly done by highlighting local role models, demonstrating good examples and providing inspiration. Municipalities also arrange events where the business community meet to discuss new business, exchange best-practice and have informal meetings with local politicians.

The municipalities contribute to a good business climate in the MalmöLund Region by means of service, knowledge and understanding of the needs of the business community.

SERVICES FOR YOUR BUSINESS If you already have a business and would like to develop your activities, or if you want to start up a business, the municipalities offer many opportunities for networking and exchange of knowledge. In most municipalities, a business mentorship is offered.

“BUSINESS PILOT” Several of the municipalities in the MalmöLund Region have business mentors. In Malmö this is called the “Business pilot service”. It is a free service for anyone wanting assistance starting a company or understanding the legislation and rules applicable. The business pilots are happy to guide you through the municipality’s administrative process and give you relevant information about permits, guidelines and laws.

The business pilot has a range of expertise and help businesses with clear, straightforward information and case management. This allows you to focus on running your business and is a great way for municipalities to contribute to creating a more attractive business climate!

Education World-class education The MalmöLund Region is home to a large number of highly-skilled, well-educated people who are attractive on the labour market. Many studied in the region, liked it and stayed. There are no fewer than four institutes of higher education here.

MALMÖ UNIVERSITY Malmö University is Sweden’s largest university college. It was established in central Malmö in 1998 and currently has 24,000 students and 1,300 employees, including 700 teachers.

The university offers around 100 study programmes and 500 courses. Malmö University’s mission is to be an active hub for research, education and innovation that benefit a global society.

SLU ALNARP The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp is located in Sweden’s most dynamic food, agriculture and horticulture region. The university focuses on landscape architecture, horticulture, plant production, agriculture and forestry. SLU Alnarp offers a renowned world-class research environment and currently has around 1,000 students.

WMU WMU stands for World Maritime University. It was established in Malmö by the International Maritime Organization, part of the UN, in 1983. WMU is a centre of excellence working to promote the international exchange and transfer of maritime ideas and knowledge. The university offers both graduate and postgraduate courses. WMU in Malmö, and its branches in Shanghai and Dalian in China, has about 200 students on its master’s programmes.

Malmö University offers a three-year course in games development to meet the growing demand.

LUND UNIVERSITY Since 1666, Lund University has been a leading centre for education and research in northern Europe. The University offers the breadth of a large university and is the institute of higher education in Sweden that attracts the most foreign students. In principle, all fields of study in higher education are represented here. The university is based in Lund with faculties of law, medicine, engineering, social sciences and many more, and in Malmö with Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy. It also has a campus in Helsingborg and a School of Aviation in Ljungbyhed. Lund University currently has 47,700 students and 7,500 employees, making it one of the largest institutes of higher education in the Nordic region.

In 2013, there were approximately 10,000 people with a PhD or a higher qualification living in the MalmöLund Region. In Sweden outside the MalmöLund Region, an additional 50,000 people has a comparable level of education, while the number in Copenhagen is approximately 4,000.

Livability Accessible and attractive A successful business community in the region depends on citizens having a high standard of living and the opportunity to enjoy a full range of leisure activities. The MalmöLund Region offers top-class education at primary, second and tertiary levels. It also offers a great variety of leisure activities and experiences for all areas of interest.

GOOD EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

MAJOR CULTURAL AND NATURAL ASSETS

The ability to attract companies to relocate here depends on there being good education and schools. Many of the municipalities in the MalmöLund region rank high in national school surveys and there is a wide range of both municipal and independent schools at all levels with different fields of study. There are also a number of international schools for foreign employees and their families.

The region has an abundance of cultural heritage and there are many places to visit and natural experiences to be enjoyed. Examples of our historical heritage are for instance the Viking village in Foteviken outside Vellinge, Trelleborgen in Trelleborg, Uppåkra in Staffanstorp, Lund Cathedral and the open-air museum Kulturen in Lund. The region is full of castles and manors. Walkers love the Skåneleden path or the recreational areas in Frostavallen, Skrylle and Torup. For many people, Skånes Djurpark (zoo) is a well-known, popular destination. Large parts of the coast offers sand dunes and good bathing waters, in particular in Falsterbo and Skanör.

There are also excellent hotels and restaurants. The region is home to some of the best restaurants in Sweden, many of which are mentioned in the White Guide. Three of them also have a Michelin star. The region boasts six vineyards that welcome visitors and arrange wine tastings.

GREAT MIX OF HOUSING OPTIONS The MalmöLund region offers very varied housing in attractive environments. There are typical urban environments close to shopping and cultural attractions, seaside housing in old fishing villages and industrial and port areas transformed into attractive new residential areas. The region also has beautiful, thriving rural areas where you can live in close proximity to nature and open spaces with recreational opportunities in forests and on lakes.

HIGH STANDARD OF CULTURE AND SPORT There is a great need for new homes, particularly for young people and students, and many municipalities have ambitious construction plans. According to Skåne County Administrative Board, 3,000 - 6,000 new homes are expected to be built in the MalmöLund Region in 2015.

PROXIMITY AND ACCESSIBILITY Well-developed infrastructure means that you are never far from anything in the MalmöLund Region. International airports and regular flights to worldwide destinations, ferries and trains to neighbouring countries and the Öresund bridge make it easy to travel to and from the region.

It is also easy to travel to work or the countryside. A well-developed bus network with a high frequency of services makes the region an excellent place in which to commute.

Distances are not great and many people make use of the numerous cycle paths that interconnect the entire region.

Music and theatre lovers can enjoy a new centre for culture with a new concert hall at Malmö Live. Malmö also has the Malmö Opera, one of the biggest opera houses in the Nordic region, with its own chorus, orchestra and opera workshop.

During the summer months, Skånska Operan tours the region with well-known, much-loved productions. Art can be enjoyed at Moderna Museet in Malmö, Malmö Konsthall, Axel Ebbes Konsthall in Trelleborg, Skissernas Museum in Lund and a number of galleries around the region.

The football clubs Malmö FF and FC Rosengård are league champions and play in the Champions League. Handball is a major sport in the region with several top teams and enthusiastic followers at matches. There are elite teams for both basketball and floorball. The region offers nearly 30 golf courses.

Barsebäck GCC and PGA of Sweden National in Svedala have both hosted international golf tournaments. The Ultra Bowl international skateboard competition is held every year in Stapelbäddsparken. With visitor numbers growing every year, the Falsterbo Horse Show is the highlight of the summer for horse lovers. In 2014, the event had over 63,000 visitors.

Constant development and expansion MALMÖ LIVE

There is always something new and exiting being developed in the MalmöLund Region. In some cases large projects enabled by major investments and in other cases smaller projects with a twist. On these pages we have collected a selection of current development projects, of which there are many, many more.

The core of Malmö Live is a concert and conference centre with capacity for up to 3,000 people, spaces for exhibitions and performances, cafés, restaurants and areas for spontaneous meetings and lectures. A 25-storey hotel is also integrated in the new cultural quarters.

KRONETORP A new city district will be developed in Kronetorp, with space for approximately 3,000 homes, sports facilities, shopping streets and service functions. Kronetorp is centrally located in the region, as a result, the area will have excellent access to transport hubs, shops, schools and other public services.

SKI CENTRE An indoor winter sports centre will soon be built at Frostavallen in Höör. It will be a unique facility which enables visitors to ski on snow all year round, with focus on cross-country skiing.

ÖRTOFTA POWER PLANT The Örtofta power plant was finished in March 2014 and is one of southern Sweden’s biggest biofuel-fired combined heat and power plants. A total of SEK 1.8 billion has been invested to produce district heating able to meet half the demand in Lund, Lomma and Eslöv. The power station will also generate enough power to meet the annual power demand for tens of thousands people.

SOCKERSTAN In Staffanstorp’s former sugar mill area, there are plans to build a new district in which the fusion of old and new will create a unique identity. Character buildings from the 19th century will be integrated with modern buildings in a location close to public transport. The aim is to build a total of approximately 1,000 homes.

LOMMA HAMN In Lomma’s harbour area, the first stages of the transformation of the former industrial port into an attractive seaside district have been completed. Once fully developed, a total of approximately 1,500 homes as well as shops and offices will have been built, along with recreational areas.

NATURUM Falsterbonäset has unique flora and fauna. The largest concentration of migratory birds in northern Europe attracts a high number of visitors every year.

A “naturum” (nature information centre) will be built at Falsterbo Strandbad. This will provide good development opportunities for the visitor industry and simultaneously safeguard the preservation of the unique natural environment.

HYLLIE IN MALMÖ A climate-friendly city district is being created in Hyllie, with housing, offices, shops and events close to the Öresund bridge. The district is home to Malmö Arena, Malmömässan, the Emporia shopping centre, hotels, office buildings and an aquapark. Approximately 9,000 homes and the same number of offices are being built here. It takes 12 minutes to travel from Hyllie Station to Copenhagen Airport.

NEW CITY DISTRICT IN KÄVLINGE A brand new residential and commercial area will be built next to the railway station in Kävlinge. Thousands of new residents will contribute to an attractive urban environment with excellent transport connections. The plans also include a combined library and activity centre as part of a new municipal building.

VÄSTRA HAMNEN A new city district has been built in Västra Hamnen in Malmö in what was previously a port and industrial area. The area is still being developed. Once completed, the district will have approximately 4,000 homes and a large number of jobs in an attractive environment by the sea and next to the city centre.
