Dear Readers

How much was studying William Shakespeare a part of your educational journey? Following a quick (and pretty fascinating) straw poll of friends on Facebook it would seem that I enjoyed more than my fair share – depending on how you look at it. I recall at least 9 of them, from memory, some more enjoyable than others. We started aged 11 and studied at least one a year. Sadly the great bard does not feature so prevalently these days in the curriculum. I understand that children should study at least one Shakespeare play during their GSCE years, some schools do more and some the minimum, So what a pleasure to go along to the Rose theatre to see four local schools (one boys prep, one boys secondary and 2 primary) performing one work each. Daughter number 2, aged 9, was taking part in one of the productions and has studied Twelfth Night in English this term. And really fantastic they all were - taking part in a festival of 35,000 children in 130 theatres. What an amazing experience for them - to really make words written over 450 years ago come alive on a professional stage with a professional theatre producer. Sitting at our desks reading out the lines when the teacher pointed at you (and woe betide those who lost the place) didn’t have quite the same impact! With so many radio, TV and movie adaptations at our fingertips, in addition to theatrical productions, Shakespeare is really accessible to those who want him, and Father Christmas may be asked to drop a few plays down out chimney this Christmas. I LOVED it! Still on the acting theme, it’s a few years now since we last saw a school nativity play but many of you will be queuing up to get a good seat in the weeks ahead and position to see your little ones earnestly deliver lines and sing along under the weight of nerves, teatowels and tinsel. Creative parents cut, bend and cover a wire coat hanger with tinsel for the home made halo effect (with mixed results in my experience) Inventive parents go to ebay. Enjoy! Wishing you As always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month. If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes, and have a very happy Christmas.

New Malden High Street Christmas Lights - a message from the Malden Fortnight Committee and New Malden Rotary

Last year we had trouble with the main Christmas lights fusing due to the ageing condition of the catenary lights, which form the chain from lamppost to lamppost along the High Street. The Neighbourhood Committee of the Royal Borough have agreed to install new catenaries, but these will not be available until the New Year. The catenaries will therefore not be illuminated this year to protect the main lights. But do we want the Christmas lights at all? The Council does not pay for the Christmas lights, although they do give us a generous grant; they are arranged by the Rotary Club and should be paid for by the businesses in the High Street. Last year only 27 of the 187 businesses in the High Street contributed and we suffered a loss of £1,300. If this loss is repeated this year the future of the lights is at risk. We are inviting the public to join with the local businesses and the Royal Borough to ensure that we can continue to provide a High Street to be proud of at Christmas time. Collecting tins will be available on the switch on night and you are invited to donate or to send a cheque to The Treasurer, The Rotary Club of New Malden, 2, Mayfair Avenue, Worcester Park KT4 7SL, writing ‘Christmas Lights’ on the back of your cheque. Thank you to all the businesses and members of the public who make this event such a success. Peter Hope and Peter Findlater

Malden Fortnight 2015

Planning will start in the New Year for 2015 events. Bear in mind when you take your decorations down that our theme is going to be... guess what.... CHRISTMAS!!! We hope that you’ll agree this is a fun theme for the beginning of July and as well as being a fairly easy topic to ‘aquire’ props for, it will also give us a platform to raise money and awareness for the Christmas lights fund as detailed above. At the time of writing though we cannot guarantee that the parade will go ahead as usual. You may have heard that the Metropolitan Police had withdrawn support for lots of community events (leading to the cancellation of the Kingston Festival in the summer), including our Christstmas Lights and Summer parades. We are not clear at the moment how this is going to affect us but it’s anticipated that there will be fairly significant costs involved and we don’t know yet if they will be affordable. I have asked the Met Press Office for a statement explaining what’s led to this decision and why some events - ie ours! - are affected and others don’t appear to be. Waiting for a reply. If you would like to lend your support in any way to help make sure that our 31st annual Parade is not compromised, or feel strongly about any of the above then please email info@Maldenfortnight.co.uk We are a very small committee and would love some more helpers so if you’d like to join us, get in touch.

New Malden History Jumping to conclusions by Robin Gill

Benjamin Horace Turner was born in Tooting on 13th March 1910 the son of Horace Turner a candle and soap manufacturer and his wife Miriam. Ben had always wanted to learn to fly; excited by the planes he saw in the sky, and the exploits of the pilots in the First World War. But his parents could not afford to pay for any training, so he decided that he would become a parachutist. Parachutists had entertained crowds ever since the age of ballooning. Originally attached by a rope or wire to the balloon, they released themselves to fall to earth aided by parachutes of their own design. Gradually, they became more confident, exiting from the balloon’s basket. Firsts and lasts On 1st March 1912 Captain Albert Berry achieved probably the first parachute jump from an airplane.

GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS!

The event which took place 1500 feet above Missouri USA, involved the parachute being packed into a case stored under the plane. When Berry jumped, his weight pulled the chute from its container, and he fell 300-500 feet before the parachute opened, taking him gently to the ground. It should be mentioned that Berry was not attached to the parachute by a harness, but sat on a type of trapeze bar.

The first parachute jump from an airplane in England was by William Newell at Hendon aerodrome on 9th May 1914. Jumping from 2000 ft he landed safely in around 2½ minutes. The first female parachutist was Lucienne Cayat de Castella whose husband designed parachutes which she tested. The first occasion was on 19th May 1914 at Nevers in France, where she dropped from 2500 feet. Unfortunately, she died two months later when the chute refused to open from a similar height. The advent of World War One put a hold on parachute development, and of course the pilots of the RFC (Later RAF) didn’t carry them in their planes, which may have cost hundreds of lives.

Go back and do it again Ben made his first jump in November 1932 when he was just 22 years old. Described in his own words “Desperately clutching the strut and the side of the fuselage (of the plane), I waited grimly for the signal (from the pilot) to drop. I had little strength left anyway to hold on, and couldn’t have made it back into the cockpit. So choosing the lesser of two evils, over I dived, counted three and pulled the ripcord. There was a sudden jerk, and looking up, I saw the beautiful new canopy gleaming white in the cold sky. Before pulling the ripcord, there had been no real sense of falling just an impression of floating in space, and when I landed it was like jumping to the ground from a ten foot wall.” But the jump was to no avail, as the official who was supposed to record the event for Ben to be granted a licence had not turned up. In fact, he had to make four jumps that morning just to gain his accreditation. Crazy antics Moving to New Malden and taking up residence at 92 Clarence Avenue, in 1934, Ben joined the team that made up the “World’s First Flying Fair” which toured the country. Based at Hendon, the fair was operated by Ronald Dixey-Gerrans who would take passengers up in a towed glider. For a shilling entrance fee, you could watch parachute jumps, witness “crazy flying” involving

races between the ten planes, a funfair, rounded off by a firework display in the evening. For a further 4/(20pence) it was possible to fly in one of the planes for a short trip. Ben was billed as the youngest parachutist in England, and would be partnered with his pilot Eric Starling. Ben signal to Eric was to shout “Hi Di Hi” and out he would jump. He was paid 5 pence (2.5 new pence) for each jump of which he made 70. Later in the year, Ben made six parachute descents in 28 minutes 30 seconds, setting a new world record at Walsall aerodrome. Each drop was from a height of only 650 feet proving that his parachute worked perfectly from low altitudes. He further demonstrated this by engaging in various parachute races across the

country with fellow parachutist Captain LG Hill, Hill was the only pilot/parachutist in the country. Caged fury But it was in September of that year (1934) that Ben had his worse experience as a jumper and it had nothing to do with his parachute. He had decided to try to be the first person to land by parachute at the new Kingston and Surbiton aerodrome. This was the nearest airstrip to his home in New Malden, and he thought that being a local, the honour of parachuting in first should “fall” to him. The Tiger Moth plane had flown all the way from Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, and because of the bulky chute, Ben had to fly for the last half an hour with his legs over the side of the cramped cockpit. This gave him cramp and to alleviate this, he jumped early than he should at around 10.30am. Leaping from the aircraft at 1000 feet, he was caught in a sudden wind rush and blown off course. So instead of landing on the airfield, he landed on the bars on top of a 9 foot high cage in Chessington Zoo which contained two African lions (Billy and Sally). He was unable to get away for ten minutes as his parachute was fixed between two trees. The lions, which were enraged and terrified, roared and made repeated attempts to reach him. Ben felt the ground tremble beneath him, hear a roar that made his heart stop, and looking down saw the lions “with eyes ablaze and jaws agape”. He did not know that the bars were too close together for the animals to get their paws through to reach his legs. Every time he tried to move the lions got more excited and redoubled their efforts to get at him. They were no more than two feet away. His cries for help soon brought people running to the cage. The zoo’s fire brigade were called out, and hoses were readied for use on the animals to calm them down, but were not needed. Then the German keeper Hans Brick entered the cage with a whip and revolver loaded with blanks. The lions rushed towards him, and he let off two blanks. By now, a large crowd including most of the zoo’s employees had gathered outside the cage to witness the keeper drive the cats into the corner of the cage enabling Ben to free himself and climb down the outside to safety with the aid of a ladder. The keeper had just been about to leave for the day when the incident happened. According to the zoo’s superintendent Mr Reginald Goddard, Ben was never in danger as the animals probably thought he was some kind of giant bird. Ben who was shaken but unharmed was able to leave the zoo half an hour later. Tried and tested Ben was to move to 152 Elm Road New Malden in 1936, and also to join the flying company of CWA

10

Scott who had taken over the display team of Sir Alan Cobham, who Ben had worked with the previous year. He then joined the parachute company GQ making test jumps for their chutes all over the world, they also taught him how to design, manufacture, and service parachutes. By 1938 he had made 237 parachute jumps out of various aircraft. The company sent him to Australia to set up the manufacturing of parachutes there. This is when the New Malden connection ends, but Ben’s interesting life didn’t. It is another story, and maybe not for these pages of how he set up the business, tested the products to the highest standards, then left the company to start up his own parachute

manufacturer, becoming the sole supplier to the Australian air and ground forces and selling about 80,000 parachutes during World War Two. After the war he turned his attention to manufacturing women’s swimwear. After being diagnose with pneumonia, he sold his swimwear company to Berlei, and retired to the Australian outback. Aged 64 Ben finally earned his pilot’s licence, and established Southern Cross Airways which operated across the country and coast of New South Wales. He kept going into his seventies, but in the end had to give up flying. In May 2001 Ben died at home in Australia aged 91. Where was the airfield? It is interesting to speculate where the Kingston and Surbiton Aerodrome might have been. Certainly there was an airstrip by the Ewell Road at Tolworth in 1922 as the then Mayor Of Kingston Mr Finny had a ten minute flight from there in a plane owned by the London Aviation Company. John Carey remembered 5/- flights from a field off Elmbridge Avenue, while our good friend Eddie Gardner remembers the same from a field near to the Ace of Spades at Hook both in the 1930s. This may well have been around 1933 when a landing ground was laid out within 400 yards of the club. The airfield was advertised during the summer of that

year, with no landing fee for visitors, local flights from 5 shillings, and flights over London for £1. The strip was taken over by the Thames Valley Aero Club who continued flights until 1937. Illustrations 1) Ben Turner 2) Lucienne Cayat de Castella 3) Chessington Zoo Lion.

Christmas

Scout Christmas Post Those of you who have lived in New Malden for a while will probably be familiar with the annual Scout Christmas Postal Service with its red and black post boxes at various locations around New Malden. In the early days the scheme was operated by what was then Kingston and Malden Scout District and served most of the borough. Back in 1995 the scheme handled 4,970 items of mail. Over the years, the area covered by the scheme shrank and more recently served only the streets with a KT3 postcode. The scheme always depended on a team of volunteers to empty the boxes, sort the mail and arrange delivery by members of the Scout Group from Beavers in the youngest section, through Cubs and Scouts and even relying on parent help and assistance from teenagers in local Explorer Units. For many years, 7th Malden (St James) Scout Group ran the service and the last time they operated the service, in 2007, they were raising

funds for Scouting in Zimbabwe. Anyway, for a couple of years you may well have headed for the High Street with a bundle of KT3 Christmas cards and a pocket full of change only to find that the post boxes were not in their usual places and the Scout Christmas Post service had gone. I was sorry to see it go so when I became a Scout Leader at 1st Malden Scout Group, based in Tadworth Avenue, I began to wonder whether the Christmas Post was something our Scouts could get involved in. Not only is it a valuable exercise in community service for the youth members of our Scout Group, it is also a way to raise funds for our activities. A couple of short meetings later with the previous organiser of the scheme and I had inherited a bag full of paperwork about the service and a heap of red and black post boxes. That was 5 years ago! Last year we delivered 1,350 Christmas cards around New Malden and once again, this year we’ll have 5 post boxes in and around New Malden during the first 2 weeks of December and a team of volunteers ready to sort and deliver your Christmas cards to KT3 addresses in time for Christmas for only 25p per item. We’re very grateful to the support we get from local businesses and organisations who host our postboxes: Fountain News, Malden Centre, New Malden Methodist Church, Parkers and Suttles of Malden. Please support the scheme . . . . and if it goes well, we’ll be back next year! Jane Pringle Scout Leader 1st Malden Scout Group I would like to wish all my past, present and future members of Slimming World New Malden and Worcester Park a Happy New Year. There is so much exciting news for 2015, keep attending groups to find out what’s happening. I wish to also personally thank Jenny for producing two fantastic books each month. Apart from the advertising we can all learn so much about the fabulous area in which we live. Happy New Year everyone, kindest regards Vanessa Tavener, Slimming World. Grace Miller & Co. would like to congratulate Jenny Stuart on her excellent magazine. The Village Voice is a great little publication, full of interesting facts and information about New Malden, and Jenny is always helpful, professional and great to deal with.

Sheep hunt

Sheep lost in New Malden Can ewe help find them?

Around 30 sheep have gone astray in the High Street

Please collect an entry form from the Methodist Church (next to Tudor Williams) from Friday 28th November at the church Christmas fair and after that on any weekday between 10am and 2pm and start noting down names of sheep. The sheep will return to the fold for the Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 5pm. Please return your finished form to the church at that service or on Saturday 21st December 10am-5pm during our Christmas Tree Festival. All completed forms will receive a small prize. And to find out about our Christmas tree festival, turn to the What’s On page 40.

and we need young detectives to seek them out and record their whereabouts. The (knitted) sheep come in a variety of styles and sizes ( they are ewe-nique) but all are believed to be hiding in premises in and around the High Street. They might be in the window or you may have to search further. Each sheep has a name tag around its neck so you have to enter their names on the entry form.

Fundraising Poppy Appeal 2014

After 4 weeks of hard work the WW1 centenary year of the poppy appeal is drawing to a close. As one of our biggest collectors, Ken Smith, is currently the Mayor we knew we could not reach last years figure: however (with a few tins still to come in) we have banked around £25,000 to date. This is an incredible achievement and testament to the hard work of Malden and Coombe’s small dedicated team of collectors and counters. Most people are aware of the 2 weeks of the collection period but much more goes on in the background to make it all possible. Once the Royal British Legion delivery arrives around 200 boxes have to be assembled, filled and delivered to schools and businesses in the area, the team then maintains a base throughout from which collectors can collect their kit. After the Armistice Day the boxes and tins need collecting and the action switches to disassembling boxes and counting. Finally the poppy appeal organisers write to all businesses and collectors to thank them and inform them of their collection total. It is hard work but rewarding and we share many cups of tea and camaraderie.

Special mentions must be made; to Maureen Shilston and her intrepid team who ensure all the schools are supplied with poppies, Coombe Boys who collect at New Malden station every morning (even during half term), Ist Malden Scouts, 3rd Kingston Cubs, TS Steadfast, Kolin Smith, Pat Barnard, June and John Fairclough, Lloyds Bank and many others who make an appeal possible in Malden and Coombe every year. We would be delighted if any local businesses and their staff could support the appeal with man power in 2015, please email poppiesmc@hotmail.com

View from the City Longer View Of Your Returns by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Time to take a longer view I think. The papers seem to be full of pundits predicting that “the end is nigh” for stock market valuations at their current level. The auguries being cited seem to cover everything from the black arts of the Chartists, through to references to the “hallowed investment gurus” whom you are not able to criticise. From crossed graph lines to the interpretation of “Buffetery”, I am sure someone will soon be referencing the rooks flying over the City before long. So yes there will be a stock market pull back or even crash - but when nobody, of course, actually knows. When it happens there will be no doubt one who called it right, but that will be likely to be amongst the very few and the very lucky. The real question is actually - does it matter? Of course if we were to see a meltdown of catastrophic proportions then it would be devastating, but history does show us that this is a rare event - very rare. However, over the past 14 years we have seen some yawing and sickening movements up and down with all the stomach churning of a roller coaster - especially in the FTSE 100. A couple of recessions, a black swan or two floating by and a global banking crisis are usually enough for anybody. But for all this, what has happened? Well as you can see from the graphs below, actually the FTSE 100 has lost money over that period. So after all the roller coaster of recovery, austerity and reconstruction, we still haven’t reached our peak of the last day of 1999. How depressing. Actually you shouldn’t be depressed. If you look at the second graph you will see a good steady trend and in fact if you had included the dividends, then instead of losing 4.8% over 14 years you would have made a relatively healthy 56.6%. The fact is that in most cases your dividends and their reinvestment are more important than the vagaries of individual stock Chart 1 FTSE 100 Source - Bloomberg

movements. Dividends may sound dull but just look how much they contribute each year. In 2012 the figure for dividends paid was just over £80 billion, reducing marginally the following year to around £79 billion. That is the equivalent of a new BP, Unilever or Glaxo each year. Forecasts this year are for an increase to around £100 billion, but there has been the £15.9 billion special dividend from Vodafone included in that. The top five dividend payers in 2013 were Shell, Vodafone, AstraZeneca, BP and Glaxo, accounting for £7.5 billion. This should be regarded as being even more surprising when you consider that one of the traditional and usually “reliable” dividend and income providers to the market has effectively been destroyed, at least for the time being. Gone are the days when we used to be able to “rely” upon these nice little earners coming through from the banks - and especially the respectable income that was the Lloyds’ dividend which regularly seemed to pay more than double its best deposit rates. Those days are gone and in fact may never return - certainly in that form again. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor Chart 2 – FTSE Total Return Source - Bloomberg

Finance

Free Debt Help on your Doorstep @ St Johns, Kingston Road, New Malden

When financial trouble hits, it’s easy to feel alone. It can seem like no one can help or that no one wants to. Local debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) really can help and hundreds of people call each week to begin their journey towards financial freedom. Experience has shown that there is always a way out and no debt is too big or too small to deal with. In fact, if you are experiencing debt problems then you can get free, expert advice without even leaving your house. CAP visits people in their own homes, negotiates with creditors and supports people right up until they are debt free. On top of this, the whole service is free of charge and available to anyone regardless of age, faith, gender or background. One CAP client said “Iwas in dire straits financially and ly12:Westbury House Ad 16/6/12 13:35 Page 1 couldn’t see a way out. I was too scared to open letters and I was enormously embarrassed by my situation.

Just being able to send all the letters to CAP knowing they’d be dealt with was a huge weight off my shoulders. The relief was enormous.” In the UK, there are 270 CAP Debt Centres of which one is in New Malden. This means that local people can access the service, which is recommended by TV’s Money Saving Expert,

Martin Lewis. New Malden CAP Centre Manager, Val Hancock said, “Every week we see people who think that there is no way out of their money problems and every week we offer them a solution that really works. If you are struggling with debt then there is hope. We can help you.” In addition to the Debt Centre CAP offers money management courses, the next one taking place on three Thursday evenings in New Malden (6th, 13th and 20th November). We cover the areas of KT1, KT2, KT3, KT4, KT5, KT6, KT9 and SW20 To find out more, call Christians Against Poverty’s freephone number 0800 328 0006 or visit www.capuk.org

The better life BL 30 Here’s Looking At Yule, Kid

Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

Even though we’ve had it planned for months, Christmas is always a magical time. Our decorations go up late - sometime between the Winter Solstice and Christmas Eve - apart from the wreath that Anne makes from anything seasonal in the garden or the woods. It’s a Heath Robinson affair with holly, hebe, laurel, pinecones, acorns, or anything else we see on our travels. (One year it included a little plastic helicopter, until Anne made me take it off.) In lieu of an indoor tree, I’ve started hanging baubles on the silver birch in the garden. We’ll skip the village carol service - you may recall ‘Carolgate’, where we ended up sitting in the pulpit due to a scarcity of seats - but we’re certainly not of the “Bah! Humbug!” brigade. (A bar of chocolate would be a different matter altogether) I know I’ll wake up early on the big day like an excitable child. We’ll begin with the ceremonial unwrapping of the cat’s present, accompanied by tea. After that it’s a small present each, quite possibly

swapping packets of heritage seeds, and then off to the beach. If the tides are with us we’ll hunt beach glass for that mosaic we’ve been saving up for, along with any weathered crockery pieces. After a bracing walk across the sand, it’s back home for festive (cinnamon) porridge and present time again. This year I’ll surprise Anne with a new addition to her charm bracelet - an Irish thruppenny bit, sporting a hare. It’s nostalgic recycling, as it was once a part of my boyhood coin collection. Both of us have a thing for hares. We’ve gone back down the sloe gin route this year, after I promised not to say that it tastes like medicine again (don’t worry, she never reads these columns until the following month). In fact, this year it’s a Better Life Christmas altogether. Anne’s chicken is locally sourced, while my nutroast is my own work (I

think we all realise that Anne will probably need to rescue it). Similarly, the veg is either homegrown or produced in the area. We’ve skipped festive crackers so that I can read from a list of jokes I wrote and couldn’t sell. For example: This year, due to cutback, Father Christmas is only making ‘Made in China’ stickers. The eagerly awaited Christmas pud is Anne’s pet project; she’s been feeding it with a monthly sup of brandy since last December, so it’ll definitely flambé! She has also promised icecream (we got the machine cheaply through an ad in the local paper) using some blackberries from the freezer. And Anne’s big present? Well, in the past we’ve had a fox, bats, a toad, shrews, moles and at the very least a hedgehog poo in the front garden, so I thought it’d be fun to capture some evidence. The new wildlife camera can take pictures in daylight or at night-time, so at the very least we’ll see just how active the cat is nowadays. In the evening there’ll be cards or a Scrabble tournament, as we watch the Yule log burning and argue over whether you’re allowed to put down ‘zo’ if you can’t say what it is. Then, after victory and defeat, we’ll raise a glass of sloe gin by candlelight and start thinking about the Boxing Day garden tidy-up. Cheers!

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe By Anna Eddolls It was back in June when I first found out about the new production at the Rose theatre. I was passing through the Rose on my way to the young company rehearsal, when I saw a poster for the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The auditions were open and I defiantly wanted to do it, it’s something that I have experienced before and working like professional actors is really exciting. When I went for the audition it was so interesting. They auditions that I`ve done in the past are all the same, sing a song and act a piece. But this was different, lot of animal work and just exercising your voice and warming up. I loved being able to just be myself and act. Singing also felt so right, just really relaxed and so free. Waiting for that news was so anticipating, it was

constantly on my mind all through the summer, I was so excited. I also feared the worst too, I just wanting a place so much. It was in the airport coming back from my holiday in Greece when my mum got an email from the Rose. I was in!! I was so excited and just couldn’t believe it. We started rehearsal in September and started reading through the script and making notes. It was so exciting meeting the cast and just learning more and more about each other. A few rehearsals in, we had to bring in something that meant something to us and has some sentimental value to us. Most of us cried when we were sharing our things and it really brought us closer as a group. We then moved onto animal studies, as chorus character, we all have animals and our job was to explore our animal and try and find our animals through our work. It’s been a great time in rehearsals so far and I can`t wait to perform to the public. Come and see me and the group from the 30th of November to the 4th January.

School News The One Show

To celebrate the release of Boris Johnson’s biography of Winston Churchill, two of Coombe Girls’ best public speaking champions were asked to appear on the BBC’s One Show and took part in a day of filming on 23rd of October. Each girl took part in a short interview at the English Speaking Union and then travelled to Spitalfields market where they performed a short speech, perched on a soap box, to the unsuspecting public. Crowds gathered to hear out students speak about ‘The intelligence crisis’ and ‘Why the church should accept gay marriage’ and commented on how professional, exceptional and inspirational the girls were. All getting ready for jingle bells at the New Malden Farmers’ Market @ The Fountain Pub Car park OH WHAT FUN will be had at the next market on Saturday 13th December. This will be a bumper Christmas market at the later time of 2pm to 7pm. Many new stalls have already signed up and there will be festive spirit in abundance with much dressing up, Christmas lights and of course a lot of ho, hoing going on! A charity raffle is to take place with the support of the Chessington and Hook under 12s football team that the market has sponsored. The November market saw over 500 people visiting to pick up their poppies from the British Legion stall as well as the many delicious treats from the varied food stalls reinforced by the arts and crafts stalls of Simply Silver and Amber Glass. The weather played its part for a change with the initial drizzle fading away with the increasing number of shoppers tempted by market

specials and offers. Another charitable donation was made from the money the market raises. This time it was a £500 cheque going to Genesis Research Trust which raises money for the largest UK-based collection of scientists and clinicians who are researching the causes and cures for conditions that affect the health of women and babies. WHAT’S NEXT? The market takes a winter break, starting again on Saturday 7 March 2015 9am-2pm. For further details and stall bookings contact through web site: www.nmfarmersmarket.co.uk

Christmas Jumper Day 2014 It’s fun, fashionable and festive: it’s the Christmas jumper. Put the date in your diaries: Friday 12 December is Christmas Jumper Day 2014. By Lola Skye According to the internet, the definition of an ‘ugly Christmas jumper’ is ‘any jumper with a Christmas theme that is considered in bad taste, tacky or gaudy.’ Yet last year, a whole load of celebrities, including Myleene Klass, Julie Walters, Gok Wan and Dom Joly were spotted taking part in the festive jumper action. Why? Well, it was all because of an event called ‘Christmas Jumper Day.’ Christmas Jumper Day 2014 is on Friday 12 December and is a national fundraising campaign organised by the charity Save the Children. The day is all about ‘making the world better with a sweater’ - raising valuable funds by donating £2 to Save the Children and wearing a Christmas jumper. Everyone can join

in, so get your workplace, school, friends and family involved and start to save lives - £2 could buy potentially life-saving antibiotics to treat three newborn babies fighting infections. Although Christmas Jumper Day has been running for three years, the whole concept of festive knitwear is not a new one. In the UK, they first caught on during the 1980s and the trend was led by a variety of funky TV presenters. Unfortunately, during this time, the jumpers gained their ‘ugly’ reputation due to their ‘tacky’ embellishments and therefore they became reserved for the old and the ‘un-cool’. However, in 2010 they made a major comeback, as Amazon reported that sales had increased by 600% and by 2012 the Daily Telegraph described them as ‘this season’s must have’. So, what changed? Well, people realised that Christmas jumpers did not necessarily need to be goofy or embarrassing: whilst off-the-wall designs are still on offer, high street brands are also increasingly producing stylish options for the more fashionconscious. You know it’s a hot trend when Topshop is involved (last year they produced 34 different designs of Christmas jumper) and even super-luxurious high fashion brands such as Burberry and Jil Sander are all Christmas cosy. In 2014, nearly half of us own a Christmas-themed jumper and, thanks to Christmas Jumper Day, they are now a way of looking good and doing good. Let’s help to ‘make the world better with a sweater’ in New Malden this December. Sign up your workplace, school or group of friends at www. jumpers.savethechildren.org.uk.

Recipe

Roast turkey with leek, apricot and chestnut stuffing Serves 8-10 Ready in approx 4 ½ hours, plus resting time

Roasting the turkey in a ’tent’ of buttered foil will keep it moist and succulent. Always allow time for the cooked bird to rest in a warm place before carving. 100g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 leek, trimmed and chopped 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 75g ready to eat dried apricots, finely chopped 150g fresh white breadcrumbs 100g cooked chestnuts, finely chopped 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 5.4kg oven-ready turkey, giblets removed 16 cocktail sausages 4 rashers smoked streaky bacon Fresh herbs, to garnish 1 Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes

until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool. 2 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest

of the thyme leaves and season. 3 Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices still run slightly pink return the turkey to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes then check again. 4 Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time as the bacon-wrapped sausages for 20 minutes. 5 Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter with the bacon-wrapped sausages and garnished with fresh herbs. Serve the extra stuffing separately along with all the usual festive vegetables. Tip For a quick gravy, simmer the roast turkey juices with a splash of red wine and a couple of spoonfuls of redcurrant jelly.

Thomas Cromwell: Villain or Hero? by Stephen Kuhrt

Dr Tracy Borman speaking on her book: Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII’s most Faithful Servant at Christ Church, New Malden Thursday 4th December 8.00 pm When it comes understanding characters from the past, most of us prefer very clear distinctions to be drawn between those who were good and those who were evil. The immensely popular Tudor period is often interpreted in this manner with people frequently showing remarkable commitment to defending their take on its ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’. For a long time, Thomas Cromwell, chief minister of Henry VIII throughout most of the 1530s, has firmly existed within the latter category. Within both Robert Bolt’s play A Man for All Seasons and the numerous films made of Henry’s reign, Cromwell is frequently portrayed as the dastardly and cynical counterpart

to the saintly Thomas More. And there is certainly plenty of ammunition here: Cromwell’s leading role in the King’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon, the subsequent Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the machinations involved in the downfall of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. During the last few years, however, this perspective has been dramatically challenged through the novels of Hilary Mantel. Within the amazingly successful Wolf Hall and then its sequel Bring Up the Bodies, Mantel presents a strikingly different picture, with Thomas Cromwell presented much more sympathetically. The ruthless schemer is replaced by a man who is earnest and warm, with devotion to his family, a good sense of humour and sincerity of religious conviction among his primary characteristics. Anticipated by James Frain’s sensitive portrayal of Cromwell in TV’s The Tudors, Mantel’s novels have brought about a remarkable rehabilitation with one of history’s great villains now perceived in a much more favourable light. But Mantel’s books are novels and given the license this genre provides for imaginative reconstruction, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies have opened up the issues surrounding the interpretation of Thomas Cromwell for further

investigation rather than providing their definitive resolution. I n her recently published book Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII’s most Faithful Servant, Dr Tracy Borman has responded to this challenge. Resident of New Malden and a member of Christ Church, Tracy has examined the extensive sources which exist for Cromwell’s life, notably the minister’s voluminous correspondence, to produce an outstanding biography of this complex and intriguing man. Uncovering a great deal of fresh evidence, Tracy provides a compelling narrative of the foundational events of Cromwell’s early life, the abilities that brought him so swiftly into power, the masterly control that he operated as Henry’s minister and the mistakes and court rivalries that led to his dramatic fall from power and execution in 1540. For fans of the Tudor period, the results of this are fascinating as events such as the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the demise of Anne Boleyn, the Anne of Cleves fiasco and the general nature of Henry VIII’s court come to life as never before. Tracy’s book has already met with widespread acclaim and a tour during which she has spoken at some twenty five venues. This tour will conclude on

Gardening

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas Pippa Greenwood

With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive. I love giving presents, whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive. If you know a newish gardener then the basic tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www.pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, or to tackle weeds within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. A few packets of vegetable seeds are always appreciated and most garden centres already have a good variety in stock. If you want to spend a bit more, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away. Gardening gloves too are something we can always have more of. Some of the gauntlet style gloves are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Alternatively, there are many lower-priced types available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles. Classic greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring. Birds in the garden not only help to keep pest numbers down, but they also add charm which everybody appreciates. A peanut feeder, nest box 58

or perhaps even a bird table will attract them in and there are many designs available from modern to rustic. For the ‘other half’ who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or even a hammock. As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year. Finally, houseplants such as poinsettias, cyclamen, indoor azaleas and jasmines are perfect for providing bright colour indoors at this time of year. But remember when you buy any indoor plant during cold weather, it is essential that you protect it thoroughly on the journey from the shop to your car and from your car into your house as even a tiny exposure to cold drafts and low temperatures can cause damage. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for a great rate of Gardening-related Gifts including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift cards, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of useful garden items for your friends & family…or for yourself!

A Malden Man Famous New Malden residents

If you’re interested in hearing some of his music, the best place to start would be his seminal 1973 masterpiece Solid Air, an incredible piece of work and of the defining albums of that decade.

It recently came to my notice that singer songwriter John Martyn (1948-2009) used to live in New Malden, which prompted me to do some research in to other famous New Maldeners.

CBE, DBE, sex symbol, 60s icon, stage and screen actress and all round national treasure Dame Diana Rigg was also a resident of New Malden. Perhaps best known for her role as Emma Peel in the TV series The Avengers, Rigg had an illustrious career. After making her stage debut in 1957 in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1959, and in 1971 she made her Broadway debut.

If you’ve never heard of John Martyn (OBE), he was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Martyn released 21 studio albums over a 40-year career and worked with artists such as David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton. The Times newspaper once described him as “an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues”. Martyn was actually born in Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden and was a key figure in the British folk scene in the1960s.

Max Wall (1908-1990) was an English comedian and actor who also, at one time, resided in New Malden. He will be mostly remembered for his comedic strutting stage personaProfessor Wallofski. (Worth checking out on YouTube- he had some nifty footwork and there’s no doubting his status as a one-off). Incidentally the great John Cleese acknowledged Wall’s influence (as Professor Wallofski) on his own Ministry of Silly Walks sketch for Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Sir Anthony Alfred Caro (1924-2013) was born in New Malden. He was an abstract modernist sculptor who used unwanted industrial metal objects for his work. He honed his modernist ambitions through working as an assistant to the legendary sculptor Henry Moore, early on in his career. In the 1960’s he was introduced to the American sculptor David Smithin, which led to him abandoning his ‘figurative’ style for a more industrial style, which saw him weld and bolt together pieces of steel to ‘construct’ his sculptures. Caro was lauded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation. If you know of any other famous New Malden residents past or present, drop us a line- we’d love to hear from you.
