WELCOME

Timetable Programme Speaker biographies Exhibitors and sponsors Music Matters

It’s wonderful that Making Music is celebrating its annual conference in Wales.

A warm welcome to Cardiff from Making Music Wales – croeso cynnes i Gaerdydd o Creu Cerdd Cymru. I hope that you will enjoy the weekend of musical activity and events that we have planned for you. It all starts with having a go, so why not try your hand at something new – be it singing barbershop or learning about traditional Welsh music? Making Music has invested heavily in our Wales-based activity in recent years, so please do visit our Wales website for full details of all our recent and forthcoming endeavours. Together with our partner organisations we look forward to continuing our work to help voluntary music thrive in ‘the land of song’. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and here’s to a super conference all round – rwy’n gobeithio y byddwch yn cael penwythnos gwych.

Wales has been home to a wealth of music making from ancient Celtic times to the present day. In line with this historic tradition, performance will be at the centre of this year’s conference. We feel passionately that the more music people make together, the healthier and happier we all are, and we hope the next two days will see this belief being put into action. Making Music exists to support and encourage all kinds of voluntary music groups – bands, festivals, orchestras, music clubs, and choirs – and we welcome those from any background. It’s our aim to give you the support necessary to run a successful group, while offering you ways of becoming involved in the wider musical community. We have a flourishing structure in each nation and region of the United Kingdom, but it’s here that we can all meet together. I wish everyone a most enjoyable conference.

Hwyl fawr! Craig Roberts Wales Development Manager www.makingmusic.org.uk/wales

Music matters

h s

A project encouraging outdoor music marathons throughout the country is just another example of the valuable work carried out by Making Music. Fiona Clampin met chief executive Robin Osterley to find out more

T

aking part in a marathon is such an exhausting enterprise that it is probably fair to say that many recreational runners limit themselves to just one a year. Maybe even a lifetime. Not Robin Osterley. The chief executive of Making Music, the organisation for voluntary music, is going for two this year. In April, he ran the London marathon (time: 04:53:10) and September will see him taking on a different kind of challenge – the Bandstand Marathon. I wonder whether this man feels he has bitten off more than he can chew. ‘Even after 15 years at the head of this organisation, I still love coming to work,’ says Osterley. ‘For me, the main thing is that it’s an opportunity to make a difference in an area that I consider to be so significant. And the more we discover, the more we know how incredibly important participatory music making is to such a large number of people.’ Bandstand Marathon is participatory music making writ large. On 9 September, more than 300 events are anticipated across the country, taking place in a bandstand or an open-air space such as a park. Making Music is encouraging its 3,000 members, and other amateur music groups, to put on a concert in their

22

MM2012_layouts.indd 22

area. Like Osterley’s London marathon effort, each of the simultaneous Bandstand Marathon concerts is designed to last for around four hours. Spurred on by the success of events such as the BBC’s Music Nation this year (of which Making Music was a partner), Osterley is convinced such activities give people the chance to feel part of something extraordinary. ‘As a participant, you really benefit from the knowledge that it’s not just happening in your area, it’s happening all over the place,’ he says. ‘With our media’s ability to hook things together, with communications and Facebook and Twitter going on instantly, you can learn immediately that what you’re doing is not an isolated thing. And I think that creates a sense of community, a sense of solidarity that is greater than the sum of its parts.’ This was certainly the aim of Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, whose officials arranged a meeting with Making Music and arts organisation Superact. The latter had been running the Bandstand Marathon since 2008 on a more modest scale. They discussed how Pickles’ department could support an event to mark the end of London 2012 that would give communities a focus, and the department

has since provided what Osterley describes as ‘a substantial sum of money’ to make it happen. The event will also allow Making Music to promote one of the many strings to the organisation’s bow, namely training. ‘We’ll be training up a group of event planners, which adds an enormous amount of value,’ says Osterley. ‘As a result, they’ll be reasonably skilled in that kind of work and able to demonstrate some experience of actually putting on events. Hopefully, they’ll then be able to do this kind of thing in the future.’ Although Making Music has often run training courses in the past, for the first time in its history the organisation now has a dedicated training manager who will be looking to develop opportunities around the country. It is part of a refocus that will also involve Osterley taking on more of the lobbying role that earlier this year scored his organisation a notable success with Wakefield Music Library. There were fears the collection of the UK’s largest music and drama lending library would be split up, but Making Music mobilised 2,000 of its members into writing letters of protest. Largely thanks to Making Music’s campaign, says Osterley, the group of local councils running the library reviewed their decision and the music items will now be housed in Huddersfield. Reminding those in power of the importance of amateur music is an ongoing challenge, and while Osterley feels his organisation’s voice is being heard, he believes the pressure needs to be maintained. That is particularly true, he points out, in the context of the National Plan for Music Education and the recently announced ‘hub’ winners. The latter, says the Arts Council, will ‘build on existing music services and be a collection of organisations working in a local area to create joined-up music education provision

for children and young people, both in and out of school.’ Here, says Osterley, is a golden opportunity for Making Music members to get involved.

Reminding those in power of the importance of amateur music is an ongoing challenge ‘The Henley report talked about the importance of involving community and amateur groups in the hub that you are creating. That was echoed in the National Plan, where there are a couple of references to partnerships working with existing community groups. Our view is that if you’re setting up a proper music hub, it really has to involve some of the amateur groups that are in that community. Of course, you can create a partnership with a professional orchestra, say, but there’s going to be a limit to the amount that a professional group can do for you. If you create a partnership with a local community-based group, that partnership can be very long lasting.’ Osterley is also hopeful that, as the hubs themselves become more remote from local authorities, they may look to Making Music for support in activities such as audience development and putting on concerts. If Making Music’s chief executive maintains his eye to the future in this way, he can surely count on the support of the organisation’s members for years to come – both on and off the marathon trail.

Alison and Katharine work closely with composers to realise their scores. ‘I myself was delighted by your first performance of [my song] Dawn.’ Peter Thompson ‘Thank you for giving my song such a lovely performance - it was exactly as I imagined it.’ John Mitchell ‘Dirge for St Patrick’s Night [by Carey Blyton] was incredibly moving – and I was so touched to experience that rapt silence afterwards. You had really got through to the audience.’ Frank Bayford ‘An especial thank you for including my little Songs for Children’s Dreams and for giving them such a delightful and sympathetic performance – you fully realised my intentions and gave them a great deal more.’ Frank Bayford ‘Powerful sense of atmosphere’ Independent ‘Impressive’ Sunday Times ‘Literally transcendental’ Times ’a spectacular high point, so beautifully conveying the lonely, passionately poignant, windswept scene.’ Peter Thompson ‘Soprano Alison Smart was on splendid form for Prayers from the Ark.
