WELCOME TO

Dear readers, games truly are a key player, combining both culture and technology. They are the only native digital entertainment medium and thus the most influential one. Market figures prove their significance, in Germany especially through growth in the mobile market as well as in the console market. BIU is the association of key players in the German games industry, its members representing over 85 per cent of the market. Together with our networks BIU.Dev & BIU.Net we aim to establish Germany as one of the key players for game development worldwide. This means striving to have the best educated graduates, well-trained professionals, a forward looking and internationally competitive funding culture, and shaping an economical framework attracting founders, companies, investors and budgets. Games are interdisciplinary bringing together art, science, narration, music, sound and so many more to create a unique, extraordinary experience. Games push boundaries, drive technological advancement, create breakthrough technologies such as VR, adaptive music, intuitive user interfaces, to name just a few. Other industries now start to realize what they can learn from games, e.g. in CRM, business intelligence, through gamification, 3D-visualisation and many more.

Welcome Game Community! The German games market is growing. While retaining its place as one of the largest global markets, Germany is a long way from reaching its full potential. This is great news for the games sector, though a relatively small percentage of those games is produced locally. Our developer scene has to adapt constantly to changing business models and lower levels of funding compared to other countries, which is quite a challenge. At GAME we share a love and passion for games, and we firmly believe that German developers and publishers can make games that are able to compete in international markets. At the recent German Videogame Awards (DCP) we saw many great games by innovative, creative developers who had little or no funding. Most of them are experts in making games with fresh, creative ideas, yet they often lack proper funding. At GAME, we’re dedicated to changing that. Representing around 100 members (and growing), we’re working to help change the environment by connecting key players, promoting the interests of the German games industry at government level, boosting companies and empowering young talent to make it in the creative games business. Virtual reality is bringing a new era, and with the right support, the German games industry is well placed to play a big part in it.

THE GERMAN GAMES MARKET: AN INTRODUCTION

The German games industry recorded sales of computer and video games totaling 55.8 million units in 2014. This represents a decrease of 20 percent on the previous year. The turnover of computer and video games software in 2014 in Germany totaled 1.89 billion euros. These revenues are distributed over three core business fields: • Boxed games and downloads: sale of games for PC and consoles as well as mobile games • Online and browser games: expenditures for subscriptions and premium accounts • Downloadable content: expenditures for additional items / item selling / virtual goods

Revenues from computer and video games software totaled 1.89 billion euros on the German market in 2014. With a share of 1.277 billion euros, the classic sale of physical or downloaded games (games for mobile consoles, smartphones & tablets included) still comprises the lion‘s share of revenues. Newer business models, such as fees for subscriptions and premium accounts (online and browser games) or expenditure on game expansions and additional items (downloadable content) make up about 33 percent of total revenues on PC and console games.

The selling of computer and video games – physical or by download – represents the classic business model of the games industry. The consumer acquires a software license that entitles him to use a certain game. During 2014 in Germany 55.8 million games for PC, consoles and mobile devices such as mobile telephones, handhelds or smartphones were sold. This represents a turnover of 1.277 billion euros.

THE GER GAME MA ONLINE- AND BROWSER GAMES

17.4 million Germans played online and browser games in 2014, making them an integral part of the German games market. This number rose from 16.3 million in 2013, and with it the revenues from online and browsergame fees from 139 million euros in 2013 slightly rose to a total figure of 140 million euros in 2014. Browser games refer to internet games that are played directly using the web browser or in a social network. Online games are games which are played mainly or exclusively on the internet and require a previous program installation on the computer. Not included is the turnover from the sales of virtual items.

THE GER GAME MA ITEM SELLING

Virtual items include new characters and virtual weapons for online and browser games as well as additional playing levels for games which were acquired by data media or download. Against the background of the increasing dynamics of digital business models, the statistical methods used in the co-operation between BIU and GfK to measure turnover of virtual items have been adjusted. In 2013 the turnover saw a decrease for the second year in a row; after a slight drop in 2012 to 226 euros it dropped further to 209 million euros. However, turnover for virtual items amounted to a total of 477 million euros in 2014. This represents an increase by 128 per cent from 209 million euros in 2013.

CipSoft is an independent developer and operator of online games. The company is located in Regensburg and run by two of its original founders. This autonomy allows us to concentrate on long-term success instead of short-term profit. It also encourages innovative thinking and enables us to realize our own ideas. Our games reflect that. With more than half a million active players from over 200 countries, both Tibia and TibiaME are longlived success stories that are forerunners in their respective fields. Our first game, Tibia, went online in 1997. This makes it one of the first massively multiplayer online role-playing games ever created. It’s also one of the first games that adopted the Free-to-Play concept. TibiaME was released in 2003 and is the world’s first MMORPG for mobile devices. Apart from updating these games with new content and features on a regular basis, our main focus lies on the development of new products that provide the same kind of innovative and infinite entertainment as our existing games do.

Our partners include companies like Ubisoft, Blue Byte, Daedalic Entertainment, Ravensburger Interactive, gamigo, Fabrika, 101XP and Kalypso Media. We develop our own concepts (e.g. the »Cultures« series) as well as exciting projects pitched to us (e.g. »Panzer General Online« for Blue Byte). In terms of our own concepts, we attach great importance to innovative gameplay, focusing on fun and high quality. With the Cultures series, for example, Funatics even created the new genre »Adventure Strategy Games« combining building strategy game mechanisms with exciting stories and adventures that the protagonists are embarking on. In 2015, we started developing games for wearables and sports devices, and entered new market segments.

Lingoona Grammar Library Each language has its own specific features that usually need to be considered when developing a game (e.g. position of nouns’ adjectives, changes of spelling according to word order, gender and meaning, case forming, etc.). The Lingoona Grammar Library does all of this work automatically, saving valuable development time and resources and without forcing you to use additional toolchains or file formats. Key Features: • API that creates grammatically correct sentences in real-time, using dynamically supplied text blocks and placeholder texts that are assembled and adjusted on the fly before shown on the screen of the user. • Provides developers and translators with numerous options for flexible adaptation of texts and text blocks. • No additional toolchains required to use or translate texts – use the file formats or loaders you are familiar with. • Optional built-in name generator creates proper names from supplied nouns and adjectives. (e.g. for randomized objects, livings, etc.). • Very small, fast and simple API that can be integrated directly into the game (full source code in C++, cross-platform compatible, about 200 KB/language, supporting more than 10,000 requests/sec.). • Available in 7 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian.

Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) offers a six-semester Bachelor’s and a three-semester Master’s program in Game Design. Both programs deal with the conceptual, creative, and technological aspects of videogame design, as well as practical applications. Our specialization in Game Design focuses on the culture and design of interactive games. Coursework builds fundamental specialist knowledge and skills through various game development projects. Students further deepen their expertise by acquiring the essential analytical, planning and implementation techniques. Our BA program is a general course of studies. Our broad-based curriculum includes modules and courses such as Game Culture, Interactive Storytelling, Game Mechanics, Programming, Usability Design, Game Conception, Game Analysis, Game Business, Visual Techniques, Character Design, 3D Modelling and Animation. MA Design students specializing in Game Design become versatile and innovative experts by developing their own game project in cooperation with MA students from the Music Department and other partners, and writing their theoretical Master’s thesis.
