Learn to Score O ne of the main problems with an amateur is not thinking about trying to score. They instead ARE concerned with how far they can hit the ball. If you watch players at the driving range, you will see many of them out there just working on how far they can hit the ball. Very few are actually trying to see how close they can get to a specific target. They think if they can hit the driver a long way, then the score will be lower. I see many players who can hit the ball far and score very high. I also see other players who are not as long of a hitter, but are shooting much lower scores. These are the players that have learned to swing under control. Find out what distances you can hit your driver and your irons and still be in control of your shot. Learn to swing under control and you will start to score better. As you get older don’t think about how far you hit the ball ten years ago. Find out how far you hit it today. Then

focus on your approach shots. These are your scoring shots. To get a good idea of your actual distances, try this: Hit ten balls with every club in your bag. Now figure the average that you hit each club. Don’t count on just your longest shot or your shortest shot, but the average distance with all ten shots. This will help you learn to swing under control. Remember this doesn’t mean to swing slow or fast – just under control. There are some players who can hit the ball a long way and control it. This tip is for the player who cannot control it. Remember, use your swing. Everybody is different. Also if you are a player who has a problem with distance, then practice your short game and putting more. This is where you will actually lower your score. And remember: 300 yards means nothing if you cannot get the ball in the cup or score par or better to take advantage of it. By Bill Easterly

Restaurants WE LIKE! Georges on The Town OK I know what you’re thinking. Why review an out of the box store restaurant? Georges is owned by The Stockade Company that owns a lot of restaurants and Georges is just another. Wrong. Its actually all by itself and there is no other like it. If you ever been on a mission to find the best CHEAP wine then you might want to try these folks. The prices are not cheap but the price point is more than reasonable for a very good product. I was reluctant to write about them simply because of the box store stigma until I made it a point to go in with an open mind. We started our experience with Fire Cracker Shrimp which were excellent and not over cooked like most box stores. We followed that with boiled shrimp, potatoes and corn also very good. For our main course we bone

in ribeye with fried onion strips and mashed potatoes. The steak was well seasoned with a solid charred flavor and really an excellent value with great flavor. Ill tell you about the deserts another time I’m full. Georges was a pleasant surprise and a worthwhile trip. The patio outside is warm and welcoming. I can’t wait until it cools down and they setup the heaters. Give it a try and write to me about your experience.

Bees love sage, lavender, rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint, hyssop, and tarragon. King Bee Urban Gardens dedicates a portion of every garden to flowering plants that attract and benefit bees and other pollinators.

The Tiny House Phenomena may be here to Stay

By Marge Phillips

A

ffordable housing is definitely a buzz word in any discussion today about housing. Wonderful that home values are rising, but along with that comes other baggage. Property tax increases, inability to buy a new home or purchase second homes and location of new home are all issues connected with this topic. The cost of new home construction has also risen substantially in the last several months, making it more difficult for those first-time home buyers. Within this changing landscape a few alternative solutions are cropping up. The buzz word in this conversation is Tiny Homes. These are usually homes under 900 square feet, some are portable and others are permanent structures. But they all have the common denominator of being SMALL. Those looking at tiny homes aren’t always just looking because of the price factor. One draw to tiny homes is the simplicity; buyers want to make their lives easier and provide time to be with family. Many buyers love that they are free from a large mortgage payment, as tiny homes are certainly priced in the affordable category. Many tiny homes are mobile and can be driven around to other areas. There are those who have them parked during the week in their home town area and go off to somewhere else for the weekend! Now that this has become a popular choice for so many people, various campgrounds exist across the country with spaces specifically for portable tiny homes.

Courtesy of: Tumble Weed Tiny House Company Many city planners are dealing with the question about tiny homes and zoning. How many homes can be put on a lot and what size lots can be sold for tiny homes, what about water, sewer and other usual home issues connected to these small homes? Consequently, all these unanswered questions have kept many cities from adopting any type of policy with regards to including tiny homes in their city planning. In Williamson County, the city of Leander did pass a city ordinance regarding tiny homes. According to Tom Yantis, Assistant City Manager, tiny homes can be built in Leander. They are required to be a minimum of 140 sq. ft., no more than 700 sq. ft. and on a foundation. Each house needs its own driveway and also street address. Zoning is available for both individual lots and multiple units on a lot. This is related to the utility capacity of the individual lot. They also need to be permanent structures and not on wheels, like those seen in the picture. There are several other guidelines within their ordinance, so always good to check before moving forward with a particular project. At this time, several developers have inquired about tiny homes but to this date, no permitting has been done to indicate that any are being or considered being built in Leander. 14 Shot of Texas Magazine™

Forbes magazine last November did an article indicating all the reasons not to pursue a tiny home. One is that they are a fad. However, it is difficult to really say what things become a fad and which don’t. Some thought cell phones would never work, but that fad has become a major market and not stopping anytime soon. They also indicated that they are not a good investment. I don’t think any buyer would look on travel trailers, motor homes, campers and tiny homes as a major investment for their portfolio. Tiny homes are attractive to a certain type of individual for various reasons. Just like some people like to camp and others do not. One of the common types of tiny homes that are being promoted extensively is the use of cargo containers. There appears to be a large abundance of these containers throughout the country. I think we have all seen these containers in various places, from on trains to backs of 18 wheelers, along seacoasts in ship yards and various other locations just setting out in an area and sometimes, just left to rust. There have been estimates of close to 17 million of these containers in the country. The Intermodal Steel Building Unites Association (ISBU) estimates the number of surplus containers in the United States to be in the lower tens of thousands and not millions. It has been within the last ten years that these containers are starting to be repurposed into homes, as well as other types of storage units, ga-

Courtesy of: Backcountry Containers rages, workshops and all sorts of other uses. They are very desirable due to the construction involved within them. The idea of recycling these corrugated structures appears to be catching on with several companies. BackCountry Containers based in Needville, TX has transformed these containers into amazing looking homes for customers all across Texas. The next wonderful part about these containers, is that when you need more space, you can just add on! A fad, I don’t think so!

Guess Who’s Coming to Visit?

N

o need to make up the bed in the guest room, buy flowers, or alter your schedule because these winter guests will stay outside. Welcome to the Cedar Waxwings! These stately birds winter in central Texas and will stay here until April-May when they head out to spend the summer in parts North. The Cedar Waxwing is smooth shiny brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, black mask, brightred wax droplets on the wing, (hence the name) with a yellow-tipped tail. Their call is a very high-pitched, piercing whistle. They gather by the hundreds to eat berries and can occasionally become intoxicated from excessive indulgence of overripe berries that have started to ferment. When feeding on fruits, Cedar Waxwings eat them one by one swallowing the entire thing at once. These birds also eat insects but can actually survive for months on just fruit; serving fruit in tray feeders will attract them to your yard. The birds’ name also comes from their love of cedar berries in winter; they eat mistletoe, madrone, juniper, mountain ash, honeysuckle, crabapple, hawthorn, and Russian olive fruits.

Cedar Waxwings will inhabit open woodlands especially near streams and creeks. In winter many of these birds can be found near suburbs and in small towns around fruiting plants. Cedar Waxwings are very social birds and can easily be heard before they’re seen. Look for them low in berry bushes or along rivers and over ponds. These birds travel in mass: according to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology “waxwings are similar to starlings in size and shape, and often form big unruly flocks that grow, shrink, divide, and rejoin like starling flocks”.

The courtship of the waxwings involves both the male and female hopping towards each other, sometimes touching bills. Then the male will give the female a gift, such as a piece of fruit and she will eat it to show she accepts him. They look for nesting sites together but the final decision rests with the female. Central Texas is not a breeding ground for the Cedar Waxwings as they will travel to the northern part of the U.S. to breed, but we do get to host them as our winter guests and enjoy these majestic birds. Enjoy The Beauty That Flies Around Us, The Bird Ladies

The Field of Honor sponsored by the Georgetown Roark Clubb was smashing success. The Rotary Club sold over 1000 American Flags and put on a week long program highlighted by school choirs and local dignitaries . Thanks so much to all who came to visit. 16 Shot of Texas Magazine™

FISHING in November November marks the start of many changes in our bay system here on the Middle Texas Coast in Seadrift, Texas. It is all driven by the first major cold front. From what I have seen in my years down here, is it can be in the 20’s before Thanksgiving, or we can still be wet wading in the right areas. If winter shows up, you can witness some epic pre/post front bites. On the other hand, if winter doesn’t show, feeding patterns will remain just as constant as they were in late summer/early fall. For that, we will spend the day wading down some of my favorite stretches of shoreline looking for that trophy trout or pods of redfish. 20 Shot of Texas Magazine™

While most outdoorsmen have indulged themselves fully into duck hunting, I will play the weather. Although not all days are sunny and warm, there are many great days of fishing during the month of November. With water temperatures falling from the previous month, bait fish start to seek refuge in the muddy bottom back lakes. These shallow, often semi –clear lakes, retain heat and therefore can be a few degrees warmer than surrounding waters. In turn, if a fish wants a meal they must congregate where the bait is. All our back lakes are different in bottom structure and size, but they all offer cover from harsher climates. A few of the most popular lakes offer 5-7 foot holes and also shallow grass flats that fish will pull up onto when the sun pops out. Usually, shortly after the opener of duck season has passed, our boat ramps and water ways become empty. Partly due to the fact that the weather may not be as good as many hope for, but mostly because folks have moved onto their deer leases until Christmas. This is one of the reasons I like fishing this special time of year. Having areas to yourself is great, and because of this, fish are not run over all the time and can return to their normal feeding patterns allowing anglers that do seek a screaming drag over a shotgun or rifle, the chance to more easily pattern and stay on a successful bite.

I, myself, do enjoy watching bucks chase doe around and the thrill of stalking a trophy buck, and days I am not on the water fishing, I can be found on the family ranch outside of Seguin, Texas, enjoying the abundant wildlife and guiding hunts. Our family has been managing our native white-tail herd for more than 30 years now, and we take pride in what we have accomplished. I discuss weather patterns and how important it is to know your weather each time you leave the dock, and coming into the winter is the most important time to be on your game. I have seen the bays turn dangerous in a matter of minutes with the approach of a cold front. We always try to time these fronts knowing the fishing is getting good. Although it is hard, don’t make that last cast, pack it up and get in before you are trapped riding it out in a duck blind. Whatever outdoor activity draws you in during the month of June, N&M Sportsman’s Adventures has something for every enthusiast. I have dedicated myself to running a full time guiding operation since 2007, and will do my best to meet the needs and standards of any customer. Much of this wouldn’t be possible without great companies and fine folks standing beside me. I am thankful I get A Shot of Texas Magazine™ 21

STAY-CATION GEORGETOWN’S SAN GABRIEL HOUSE By Rob Kahn

I

like to travel as much as the next guy but when time becomes an issue a “stay-cation” could be the ticket. Simply put, a stay-cation means staying at home and enjoying the things that are already at your doorstep. Let’s face it, a vacation, especially a short one that includes flying is sometimes just a pain. If the idea is to relax then standing in line at the airport is not exactly soothing. I especially get ticked off when they are searching some 90 year old woman in a wheel chair while I wait there standing in my once white socks. Seriously, sometimes I just want to yell out “Check under the wheel, she looks like a sly one. That being said I asked myself to take inventory of the components of a relaxing weekend without the air travel. Let see, there is the hotel, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and of course people watching that are part of all vacations. It’s not the same you say? Possibly, but perception is reality and the mind is easily swayed. Here’s the first tip. Have 24 Shot of Texas Magazine™

Uber pick you up at your house and bring you down to the Square in Georgetown. From here you can get anywhere you need to be on foot. This makes all the difference and I strongly recommend that you start your stay-cation exactly this way. This trick alone programs your mind and starts the whole weekend on an I’m on vacation mode. The San Gabriel House B&B is the ultimate way to sink into your relaxed mode. This beautiful Arts & Crafts style home is the jewel of Georgetown’s luxury accommodations. The location is such that you can walk to every attraction near the Square including a multitude of restaurants, shops and theaters with a swift five minute walk. Owners Neil & Dee Rapp came back to Texas after working on the East Coast and bought San Gabriel House in 2005 with the idea of creating an environment that was both relaxing and beautiful for their guests. If you have ever been East, you can see some similarities that probably made them feel right at home. The house was built in 1914 and has remained virtually unchanged in its 100 years plus. The covered porches are adorned with cozy couches for lounging and sipping local wines. Once inside the parlor has the most beautiful old piano as the centerpiece of the room. Every room has a private bath and extraordinarily comfortable beds. Breakfast is amazing. In the 12 years since Neil & Dee took over they have had 15,000 to 20,000 guests and hundreds of events. San Gabriel House’s Texas hospitality will make your stay a memorable one. We hope your stay-cation starts right here. Happy Traveling! A Shot of Texas Magazine™ 25

A Shot of Texas Magazine™ 29

Oh, the most wonderful time of the year! I love the smells in the kitchen and the gathering with friends and family makes December one of my favorite months of the year. I want to share with you one of my favorite Christmas desserts. I have tried for years to duplicate my grandpa's "top secret" Christmas cake recipe and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

1 Package mixed dried fruit Zest and juice 1 orange Zest and juice 1 lemon 6 oz rum 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup light soft brown sugar

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cloves 4 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract

1. Mix the dried fruit (you pulse them in the food processor for smaller pieces), zests, and juice, rum, butter and sugar in a large pan. Bring to the boil, over medium heat then lower the heat and simmer for 5 mins. Transfer the fruit mixture to a large bowl and leave to cool for 30 mins. 2. Preheat the oven to 300 F. Add the remaining ingredients to the fruit mixture and stir well, making sure there are no pockets of flour in the batter. Transfer to a light greased bundt cake pan. Bake in the center of the oven for about 90 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. 3. Remove the cake from the oven, poke holes in it with a skewer and spoon over 2 tbsp of rum. Leave the cake to cool completely before flipping and slicing. Contact us at 512.713.1647 30 Shot of Texas Magazine™
