If Ocean Club were the name of a high budget, blockbuster film instead of one of the busiest fine-dining venues in the state of Arizona, then the leading man would be none other than the legendary Frank Schneider. This general manager wields his silver hair and tailored, Armani suit nightly, peppering the ambiance of your Ocean Club experience with a touch of class and a dash of swagger. Frank’s prowess is reminiscent of a bygone era when men were cool and their martinis were cooler. This wise guy’s wisdom stems not from his ability to silence Uncle Tony, but, rather, the effortless way he can impress the most discriminating of tastes with his topnotch cuisine time and time again. Frank’s East Coast work ethic landed him his first restaurant position when he was just sixteen and helped him carve his way to the top of the culinary charts. He opened such local favorites as Christopher’s; NOCA; and the 5 Star 5 Diamond, French venue, Mary Elaine’s, at the world-renowned Phoenician Resort. It is easy to see why the executives at Mastro’s found Mr. Schneider to be a tailor-made fit for their celebrated seafood and steakhouse, Mastro’s Ocean Club Scottsdale. When asked what the key to Ocean Club’s success was, Frank replied with, “That’s an easy question to answer. We have great food, ambiance, and an amazing bar with live music seven nights a week. Where else can you get that under one roof? You can have a before-dinner drink at the bar, slide into the dining room for a great romantic dinner, then go back to the bar to interact with the band taking personal requests. You can dance the night away, perk up with a coffee, or unwind with a nightcap.” This place is truly an all-inclusive experience with no need to go anywhere else. I decided to inquire what his favorite thing was about the clientele. Frank answered with a grin, “The regulars.” On any given night Frank sees at least ten of his dining companions. Many of the seasoned guests can be spotted four to five nights a week making this establishment bubble with community support.

Without further ado, I introduce the irresistible delicacies. Frank and I dined with a feast before us. We started with the lobster. These kings of crustaceans are flown in daily from Boston and kept in tanks until ordered. Talk about fresh seafood in the desert! They steam it until almost done, split it down the middle, and finish it in the broiler with clarified butter. We had ours shelled for easy devouring; effortlessly superb. Next came the signature Lobster Mash followed by the Tomahawk Rib Eye. Frank explained to me just how important it is to use abundantly marbled, prime, corn-fed beef. Servers suggest Wagyu beef as an option as opposed to Kobe, relaying that it is the richest, most buttery breed. We had to agree with every smoky morsel melting in our mouths. I had to save room however for the stately tower of sushi before me in all its glory. The sushi menu was developed by Chef Angel Carbajal of Nick-San in Cabo San Lucas. He marries Japanese cuisine with seasonal, quality ingredients and presentation. This fusion brings an element that is unique to Mastro’s, keeping true to form with their exceptional standards. We sampled the Ahi Tuna Tostada, Chilean Sea Bass Ponzu, and the Clear Lobster Roll which was a fried tempura tail rolled with cilantro, spicy mayo, mango, avocado, red leaf lettuce, and masago. It’s garnished with lobster sauce, curry oil, carrot curls, and black sesame seeds. Next was a personal favorite of Frank and mine, the Jalapeno Tuna Sashimi. This fare is perfect for keeping your physique in check all the while satisfying your affinity for spicy foods. Needless to say, by the end of the evening we welcomed our mode of transportation of choice away from our blissful indulgence. As the house band played into the night, I thanked Mr. Schneider for this truly memorable experience and was struck with curiosity as to what this moxy-infused man likes to do when he’s

not running the swankiest restaurant in the Valley. His response was swift and with a mischievous glint in his eye he responded with, “Working on cars and riding my Triumph cycle of course!!!” Guess that’s proof that there’s as many layers to Frank as there are selections on his vast menu. For those of you who don’t already know Frank Schneider, stop by 15045 N. Kierland Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ 85254. Be sure to say that Frank sent ya. You’ll be glad you did! Frank would like to offer a complimentary Warm Butter Cake during the month of December with a mention of this article and by hitting the “like” button on The Warm Butter Cake Facebook page. Happy Holidays from the staff at Mastro’s!!!!

Christmas Sellout Predictions

Written by: Richard Baldwin ........ Last year Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 cleared opening day with record sales totalling $400 Million between the U.S. and the U.K. In fact, each Call of Duty released has not only surpassed franchise sales records, but also sets a new entertainment sales record each time. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 generated $400 million in revenue the first day, trumping the previous $360 million generated by Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 first day sales. While Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 trumped it’s predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which recorded first day sales at $310 million. So how has Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 fared? GameStop president Tony Bartel reported they sold 1 million units after their midnight sales opening day and expect Black Ops 2 to once again break record sales. Amazon has tweeted Black Ops 2 as breaking their sales records along with breaking their records of most pre-order sales. No definitive data has yet been compiled about final sales numbers, but across the board Black Ops 2 is expected to set a new entertainment sales record. There is no doubt Black Ops 2 will be on most Christmas lists this holiday season. For any parents who may not be following the hype and coverage about the game I would hurry and snag a copy prior to what is promising to be a Christmas sellout. ........

G EM tucson’s

Written by Brandy Beavers

visittucson.org - Events/Gem Show This site tells the history of the Tucson Gem show which started back in 1955!!! This ties into how “Tucsonians” are gemstone lovers and they make up a huge percentage of the exponential increase in gem and fine jewelry sales which takes place during the November and December holiday season.

Purchasing gems and jewelry can be a magical experience, filled with excitement and anticipation. But lack of information or misrepresentation can make the thrill of buying a gem or piece of jewelry confusing, overwhelming, and costly.

To help you avoid holiday debt and keep the magic, home shopping expert Alicia Perez offers three insider tips on how to shop shrewdly, smartly, and SAVE BIG when buying fine jewelry this holiday season: • Shop for halos • Colored gemstones • 14 karat gold (versus 18 karat or platinum) Halo jewelry is a style of jewelry which has been trending over the past several years in fine jewelry

24

mainstream

and is now making its way into the fashion fine jewelry arena. This is for the ladies who want a huge gem or diamond look without breaking the bank. Setting a rim of diamonds around a center stone makes the featured diamond or gemstone look larger! Because small pavé diamonds are found in abundance, they are affordable. Pendants, rings, and earrings--with a halo--are classic and make great gifts for women of all ages.

When fantasizing over colored gemstones, there are endless beautiful and reasonably priced gems available today. Precious gemstones--rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and sapphires-are always admirable, but consider some of the other less-publicized and less-expensive gems for gifting this holiday. In lieu of black and white diamonds, go with clear crystal quartz, zircon, and black onyx as gorgeous options. Not only are they less expensive, they also have a sultry, subtle sparkle. Marveling maroon or red … the colors of the season? Why not pick rubellite tourmaline or red spinel in lieu of rubies? They are lovely options which tote less hefty price tags. When shopping for fine jewelry thoughts turn to precious metals like gold. While karat gold jewelry

is a wise investment given the steady increase in value over the past decade, more and more jewelers are designing with either lesser karat gold or rhodium and platinum plated sterling silver. Fourteen karat gold is 58 percent pure gold with the other 42 percent being affordable alloys which help keep the cost down. The plating process is a wise option in that you get the durable and gorgeous finish of rhodium and platinum while the weight of the setting is done in sterling silver, a much more affordable metal. As gold prices continue to increase, the discerning customer wants shopping options! Over the years, Alicia has captured the hearts of millions via the airwaves with her warm, inviting, and down-to-earth charm. Her entire career has revolved around the world of television. You have seen her in action as a television host for Home Shopping Network, where she sold thousands of products on live national television. You may have also been captivated during her exhilarating career of selling the finest of gemstone jewelry over the airwaves at Gems TV! From in front of the camera to behind the scenes, Alicia has accrued thousands of hours of live television experience and has loved every second of it. The most fulfilling part of her television career has always been the satisfaction of selling products on the

air. This passion now shines as she coaches others to do the same as a TV media coach and consultant at Alicia Perez Entertainment. Alicia also takes great pride in being a fulltime animal lover. As a little girl, she would bring home and actually tame feral cats, earning the quirky nickname “Alicat,” which she still goes by today. She has a strong desire to make a positive difference in the realm of animal welfare by passionately supporting the humane treatment of and the prevention of cruelty to animals. She does so by representing local animal shelters as well as helping to raise funds. Alicia’s active philanthropy begins in her local community and reaches out to a national level.

Other hobbies support an active and healthy lifestyle. From indoor rock climbing to outdoor hang gliding and underwater treasure hunting, she loves adventure and staying fit. And it’s not out of the ordinary for this thrill-seeker to satisfy her adrenaline needs with occasional bull riding—on real bulls!

hen I looked at myself in the mirror, insecurity would taunt me. Here I was a fully grown and matured woman yet I was cursed with a 32A cup size. Clothes never really flattered my physique and I was tired of constantly comparing myself to every women out there, leaving me with a feeling of inadequacy. Finally I made up my mind to undergo cosmetic surgery and decided to start my hunt for a surgeon who was going to take my feelings and concerns into consideration. I’m a full time student and did not want the procedure to affect my already loaded schedule. After what felt like an endless amount of consultations with cosmetic surgeons I found Dr. Martin. There was an instant feeling of comfort with both him and his staff. Comfort with my surgeon was top priority. What set Dr. Martin apart from other surgeons was his genuine nature. I found other surgeons only gave me their opinions on what I should have but Dr. Martin first educated me then gave me the option. I had no set size in mind, so in my consultation with Dr. Martin he made sure to take his time and explain the importance of complimenting my frame with the right sized implants. Dr. Martin showed me all the variety of sizes, giving me a realistic idea of what I would look like after the procedure with each. I decided 34D would compliment my figure best and scheduled my operation during Spring Break to avoid any absence from my studies. The day of the surgery my nerves were shot. Of course I knew this is what I wanted, yet the thought of going under anesthesia had my stomach in knots. Luckily I had the support of both my mother and father and having them there with me helped subside my nervousness. The staff at Estetica did a great job of identifying my anxiety and engaging me in everyday conversation making me feel comfortable once again. Going under, was my only fear so when I awoke a few hours later it was to much relief. The office has more of a spa-like feel making me feel at home afterwards, verse other organizations who have more of a clinical feel. Not going to lie, I’m a baby with pain. However, looking back on it, the pain was well worth the outcome. It took about 2-3 weeks before I really felt as if the implants were a part of me. Once healed, I was excited for the first time buying a bathing suit. The feelings of inadequacy literally vanished giving me the confidence I have too long lived without. I have no regrets with my decision to undergo a breast augmentation! Any readers who may be considering a breast augmentation should know that the most important thing is research, being mentally and physically prepared and having chemistry between you and your surgeon. I absolutely adore Dr. Martin and his staff. They have enabled me to be a more confident individual again with my appearance. I most certainly recommend Dr. Martin and couldn’t be anymore thrilled at my results!

BILL RASMUSSEN:

FOUNDER OF

SPORTS’ HEAVEN Written by Brandy Beavers

Everyone said they couldn’t do it. Nobody did 24 hours a day. It was an unheardof concept, but on September 7, 1979, a group of brash, young guys from Bristol, Connecticut went live on air and changed the face of sports and television forever by launching the first 24-hour cable sports network, ESPN. The first words to ever be spoken were from Jay Leonard, “If you’re a fan, what you’ll see in the next minutes, hours, and days to follow may convince you you’ve gone to sports heaven. Beyond that blue horizon is a limitless world of sports and, right now, you’re standing on the edge of tomorrow. Sports 24 hours a day, seven days a week, right now: ESPN.” Although not the best production value even for 1979, the concept was groundbreaking, making ESPN and Sports Center household names all over the world. The rest is history. Before the founder of ESPN, Bill Rasmussen, took the stage to address the students at ASU, an introduction was played on the monitor by the legendary Dick Vitale. According to Dick, Bill Rasmussen is a flat-out winner in the game of life. “He is Awesome, baby, with a capital A.” It’s easy to see why he’s been given the title “Father of Cable Sports” by USA Today as well as ranking in the top 100 most important people in the face of sports history. As he addressed the audience, he was pleased to acknowledge

28

mainstream

that all the attendees were familiar with what the four letters stood for (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) and remarked that it made him feel good that we were all cable paying customers. I’m sure it did, considering that is the backbone of Bill’s success and fortune. The first event to be covered was the 1979 Slow Pitch Softball Championship, featuring the Kentucky Bourbons and the Milwaukee Schlitz; brought to you by Budweiser. A far cry from the content of today including Monday Night Football. MNF came to ESPN back in 2006, bringing a 17-week season with a $1.8 billion price tag for a one-year contract.

Financing, advertising, technology, and subscribers are the ingredients that needed to be combined just right. Bill thought if he could just charge a nickel a household he could make his dream come true. Finally receiving financing from Getty Oil and a $9,000 advance on his credit card, they turned 2.4 cents per subscriber a month into today’s $5.13 per subscriber. Those numbers combined with vast accessibility help create the ESPN empire. Disney is the current owner. Just to put it in perspective, Disney movies contribute only 10 percent of their gross revenue. Over half the revenue operating profits come from ESPN. They own 52 percent of all live rights today and were sure to incorporate any other technologies not yet invented into the contract. When they started, there were 12 channels on a TV, no remote control; no one even knew what a satellite was. There were three big networks that did 25 football games combined. ESPN currently produces and airs 450 football games in just one season and their satellites reach all seven continents including China, India, and England. Squashing the competition that once looked down their noses at this four-letter network must be a sweet

victory to celebrate. Everything was print back in those days. The TV Guide was the bible to television viewers. They didn’t want anything to do with ESPN stating that real networks only had three letters. When they did finally print their lineup due to public demand, they conveniently dropped the “P,” trying to force them to be like CBS or NBC. Well, the TV Guide is out of print now and the founders of ESPN are quietly laughing all the way to the bank. When a student asked Bill if he currently has a hand in the decision-making around corporate he answered with a “no,” stating that he hired the most amazing people to run it for him. Although he sometimes voluntarily calls and puts in his two cents worth, he is quite content with the current staff and their decisions. “It is a marketing juggernaut. It’s a model business. We developed a culture in the beginning designed to know that you can do anything. Ninety percent of our employees are 30 or younger. We receive over 10,000 applications a month for employment. Out of those only three get hired.” To conclude the Q&A, a student proposed the ever-popular question, “If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?” Bill replied with a billion dollar grin, “Not a thing. From the World War II days to today I always look on the positive side for the positive thing and I hope I always do.”

Bill Rasmussen is the poster child for the American Dream. He is living proof that believing in your ideas and applying tenacity with your convictions despite the odds can bring you to that touchdown victory dance and highlight the way to your success. It just might make you a fan or two along the way as well. Thank you, Bill, for bringing your vision to fruition from all of us TV sports junkies. Now pass the remote, the game is on.

Be sure to pick up a copy of Bill Rasmussen’s bestselling book titled Sports Junkies Rejoice. It’s sure to be a universal hit this holiday season with the special sports enthusiast or entrepreneur in your life.

REAL estate rentor

own? How do you like renting? Maybe there is an answer... Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Is it better to rent or to buy?”

Think about the following questions: Do you have uncertainty in your career? Do you need time to establish your credit? Are you worried about paying up-front costs? Are you nervous about the housing market? These are all valiant questions that need to be answered before you consider renting versus homeownership.

Now think about these questions: Do you feel like you are throwing your hardearned cash away every month and have nothing to show for it? Have you ever had issues getting your deposit back? Does your landlord decipher your decorative decisions? Are you getting a tax benefit from owning a home? Everyone is skeptical about buying in today’s market. Someone people prefer the convenience of having repairs and maintenance taken care of. Renting may also be beneficial for those of you who move often.

But let’s think about homeownership in a different light. The biggest question of a first time buyer or move-up buyer is they are unsure of where the market may be headed? Let’s look at it from a strictly numbers point of view.

Renting No tax write off, need to ask permission to hang TVs, paint walls, and more. Credit checks, competing renters and stiff deposits on the more quality properties or the homes closer to the college where the demand of homes is.

Buying

Easy qualifying government-backed loans that have such low interest rates that the payment is easily lower than renting. Most programs are available with either zero down payment or 3.5% down payment based on the price of the home. For instance - a $100,000 home can be purchased for zero to $3,500 down - with a payment of $435 or it can be rented for $800 a month with first and last month’s rent and a security deposit totaling $2,400. Buying a home is usually the biggest buying decision of a person’s life. In my perspective - it doesn’t have to be. Someone can choose to be a homeowner strictly on numbers. Perhaps home values will continue to increase year after year. Why would a qualified buyer choose to rent with so many financial advantages to homeownership? Let’s look at a few of the key points I have already mentioned.

tax advantage

Depending on your income tax bracket - some or all of your mortgage interest,

real estate tax, and even mortgage insurance can be tax deductible and help reduce the amount of tax liability you have every year.

Saving Money

Your interest portion of the mortgage payment will likely be less than the cost of renting. The principal portion you pay down on a monthly basis is your equity, a virtual bank account that you make small deposits in. Over time it will be able to be tapped during a refinance or a sale of this home and your equity transferred to the down payment of another home. Leverage of your money versus security deposits - You can purchase a home in some areas of the valley for ZERO Down. Even with 3.5% down - this type of borrowing on an investment level is unheard of. Borrowing $100,000 with only $3,500 out of pocket is incredible. Most people put more than that down on a purchase or lease of a car - let alone a real bona fide investment you can live in. Even stocks, bonds, CDs, etc, require 50-100% cash out of pocket.

If you need help with either renting or buying - we are here to help you! Contact Shawn Brown at North American Fine Properties - (480)269-1916 or Twitter @NAFP01 - Facebook.com/nafp01 and we can get you in front of a mortgage banker or sales/leasing agent at no charge.

Three Sweet Valley Suites ‘Tis the season to spend, splurge, and seek sabbatical. Yes, for many of us the holidays equal well-earned days off, so we often jet set somewhere far, far away for much-needed R&R. However, if you live in AZ, forget about flying the friendly skies; instead, consider a lavish Valley vacation at one of our esteemed resorts where you can roll like a rock star.

This assignment wasn’t painful. I sought out some of the sweetest suites in the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley area available per night for a pretty penny. I narrowed my findings down to three, and got the detailed 411 on each fabulous multiroom suite. Seriously, you’ll never want to book a regular guest room again. One of the first Arizona hotels I ever stayed at was Scottsdale’s Four Seasons Troon. I consider this property cliché Southwest; it’s quiet, serene, and

36

mainstream

landscaped with families of cacti. The restaurants are fantastic, the pools are pristine, the spa is great, but truth be told, if you have $4,300 to book a Four Seasons suite, you won’t want to leave your room. That’s because Troon offers quite a retreat: the Presidential Suite, also known as the Pinnacle.

The 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom, five-fireplace, 3.75-bath private residence is a small Four Seasons in itself. The one-of-a-kind suite occupies the highest ground on the resort, overlooking the desert preserve. Views are picturesque-you can see north to the butte, and west to Pinnacle Peak from the rear patios and large deck. The Pinnacle offers adequate space for entertaining; there’s even a food preparation pantry off the dining room, so a hired in-room chef can prepare your dinner. Ever bathed outside? (You know you want to.) Troon’s premiere suite offers two outdoor showers, along with a

freestanding bathtub. (Sounds like a perfect New Year’s Eve spot to me.) Also on the private patio is a private plunge pool, accompanied by a kiva fireplace. Romance at its finest. However, if you prefer something truly presidential, book Obama’s AZ hot spot.

Paradise Valley’s Montelucia Resort & Spa is a Spanish-infused getaway with surreal views of the iconic Camelback Mountain. The hotel has earned rave reviews: #13 Ranked Resort in the Top 50 Resorts (“Travel & Leisure” 2010), One of the Most Amazing Wedding Venues in the World (TheKnot.com 2012), and Best of Stay (Orbitz.com 2012). The property was established in 2008, infused with Andalusian decor; in fact, that’s how the Montelucia’s exclusive suite got its name. The Andalusian Presidential Suite can be booked for $2,000-$5,000 per night, depending on season. In addition to the President, A-list celebs like Jay-Z and

The marble entryway leads into this 2,800-square-foot ultimate lap of luxury. The suite’s two bedrooms showcase hand-painted ceilings and posh, plush amenities. The three full-size bathrooms have soaking tubs and separate showers. There is also a comfortable living space to lounge and relax.

The Andalusian feel is rich in hued colors and heavy dark wood, maintaining unpretentious elegance. With that being said, you’ll surely feel like a million bucks, should you choose to take advantage of perks like a personal butler. Oh, and it also has a private massage room and private pool overlooking unobstructed views of the mountain. Not too shabby. But if something more traditional is more your style, stay at Scottsdale’s Phoenician. The AAA Five Diamond property is totally Beverly Hills, flaunting elite, fabulous flare. A number of celebs often stay at The Phoenician, but the resort is not allowed to share guest names or information. (Darn!) Each of The Phoenician’s two Presidential Suites has an interior of 3,400 square feet, and an exterior of 1,340 square feet; consider it your temporary minimansion. There are six rooms total: two bedrooms, one kitchen, one living room, one sitting room, and a dining room. In addition, there are two full bathrooms, each oversized and

draped in Italian marble. There is also an outdoor terrace overlooking the resort’s 250-acre grounds. The suites were renovated and revamped in 2011, and the updated design makes a classic, yet bold, statement. There are both cool colors and warm tones, such as navy blue and citron yellow, intermixed to exude a sharp sophistication. Inside, you’ll find custom-designed wall coverings and nonconventional artwork. Amenities include a Steinway baby grand piano, should you feel inclined to serenade your sweetheart. Or you can cozy up by the fireplace, then sleep soundly on your choice of a foam, feather, or down pillow. A personal butler is at your service upon request. During peak season, Phoenician suites go for $5,400 a night.

LOVE horos

cope I am undoubtedly a Libra. I like things balanced, as my sign is the scales. I like things harmonious, as I value peace. And I like romance, as I love love. It just so happens my hubby is an Aires, my direct opposite when it comes to the Zodiac. Turns out, this kind of opposite attracts, because according to celebrity astrologer Maria Shaw, an Aries is a Libra’s match made in cosmic heaven. Maria Shaw writes the weekly horoscopes for the National Enquirer. She’s known for her amazing accuracy and predictions for Hollywood’s hottest stars. Her expertise has been featured on VH1, MTV, The TV Guide Channel, FOX, and NBC; in addition, she’s the personal astrologer for famous elite, including Antonio Sabata Jr., Tony Danza, Jenny McCarthy, Larry the Cable Guy, America Idol’s Julianne Hough and Chris Daughtery, Red Wings Hockey Star Darren McCarty, Lisa Rinna, and the late Anna Nicole Smith.

Since 2012 is coming to a close, I thought I’d investigate what’s in store for 2013 when it comes to the stars and love... and so I consulted Miss Maria herself. Take the following for what it is; according to Shaw, each sign has quite a unique forecast. Let’s start with Aries, a sign Maria says is romantic, spontaneous, and fun. With that being said, Aries do have

38

mainstream

weaknesses, and those include being self-centered and arrogant. She says Aries do best with a Libra, Sagittarius, or Aquarius; while not particularly jiving with a Cancer, Scorpio, or Capricorn. Maria says this signs seeks an adventurous mate--someone who finds life exciting. They’re natural-born leaders, so if you happen to love an Aries, let them be boss. They hate being bored and like the newness of relationships. And speaking of relationships, Maria says single Aries people will likely find love in the later part of 2013, while attached Aries will reignite the romance and reconnect with their partner.

Taurus people are incredibly loyal; Maria also says they’re totally down-to-earth. At the same time, they tend to be stubborn and resist change...that’s why they prefer a Cancer, Virgo, or Capricorn, rather than an Aquarius, Leo, or Sagittarius. The three things that make Taurus people tick include good sex, good food, and the remote control; that, according to Maria. In addition, their happily ever after is wrapped around a white-picketfence...they want a solid home, a solid spouse, and a solid bank account. In 2013, Maria says this sign, if single, should focus on meeting a soul mate. If attached, they’ll likely focus on the home, whether it’s purchasing someplace new or remodeling. Gemini people have a fun, playful heart. They’re good communicators, but tend to talk too much. They do well with a Libra, Aquarius, or Leo, but Maria warns they should steer clear from Pisces, Virgo, and Capricorn. Since the Gemini sign loves to talk, they crave a good listener--someone who is attracted to both mind and body. If single, Maria says they’ll be lucky in love for the first couple months of 2013, even though they might have a few potentials to choose from. If attached, she says 2013 is a wonderful year to reach financial security. If you’re a Cancer, you’re likely sensitive, caring, and nurturing...you’re also moody and bossy. Maria says your ideal match is a Taurus, Scorpio, or Pisces; more-so, than an Aquarius, Libra, or Aries. Cancers crave emotional and financial security. They want someone who likes being home--someone consistent, stable, and reliable. In 2013, Maria says there could be power struggles for both single and attached Cancerous people. Old flings might pop back in the picture; the last six

months of 2013 will be better than the first.

Maria says the Leo sign has a generously huge heart; however, they also have a huge ego and huge temper. Out of all the signs, they do best with Aries, Sagittarius, and Aquarius; but don’t jive with Scorpio, Taurus, and Pisces. The male or female Leo wants TLC and attention--they prefer being treated like a king or queen. According to Maria, 2013 will be a good year from the get-go when it comes to love for a Leo that’s either single or attached. Virgo people are smart... they’re also the givers of the Zodiac. While they may be generous, though, Maria says they’re also overly analytical, and tend to martyr themselves. They are most attracted to Capricorn and Cancer; least in love with Gemini and Aries. The Virgo tends to serve--they like to “save” people. In return, they want others to make a fuss over them...in other words, they’re needy. Maria says the Virgo should be cautious when entering 2013--February could bring new romances.

After Virgo, comes Libra, the September/ October sign that likes beauty, peace, and harmony. On the flip side, the Libra tends to be indecisive and melancholy. Their best match is an Aries, Sagittarius, or Gemini; they don’t “fit” right with a Cancer or Capricorn. Consider this sign all about love...they love romance--think hearts and flowers. This sign doesn’t mind being smothered by their partner. They want a spouse who is dedicated to a forever marriage. If you’re a single Libra, get ready for new love in 2013. And according to Maria, a married Libra can expect things to evolve in the new year. The Scorpio is sexy and alluring. With that, comes the bad...they’re revengeful and cold. It’s likely this sign will end up with a Cancer, Capricorn, or Virgo-they’re not really into a Leo or Gemini. Maria says this sign is all about sex--they want someone sexually explorative, open, and passionate. In 2013, the single Scorpio will learn more about love, facing minor challenges during the first part of the year. If you’re an attached Scorpio, Maria anticipates possible problems in the current relationship. Sagittarius people are adventurous and flirtatious--that’s why they tend to get

and cold. Sagittarius people are adventurous and flirtatious--that’s why they tend to get bored easy. They tend to swoon over a Libra, Aquarius, or Aries, while passing up a Taurus, Pisces, or Virgo. This sign loves newness--they enjoy trying new things and traveling new places. They look for friendship in a mate, someone willing to try anything once. As for 2013, a single Sagittarius will likely meet someone fabulous; an attached Sagittarius will have a strengthened relationship. Capricorn is a very tenacious sign-they’re hard working and prefer old fashion values. However, Maria says they are very opinionated. This sign often ends up with a Taurus or Scorpio, and is least likely to love a Libra or Aries. According to Maria, this sign is all about status--they look for someone with affluence, a good reputation, and a successful record. The new year will be good to any given Capricorn; Maria says June will kick off a lucky-in-love cycle.

Aquarius men and women are friendly and outgoing; at the same time, non-emotional and reserved. They go for signs such as the Gemini or Leo; passing up a Cancer or Scorpio. This type of person prefers change--they want someone willing to follow them and honor their decisions. Maria says the new year will possibly reconnect Aquarius people with old flames. Attached Aquarius, though, should concentrate on re-setting romance... reigniting that flame with their partner.

And finally, the Pisces. Romantic, fun loving, dreamy Pisces. At the same time, whiney, moody, indecisive Pisces. All that, according to Maria. This whimsical sign often ends up with a Cancer or Scorpio, often passing on a Leo or Sagittarius. Maria says Pisces love to daydream, often “escaping” through meditation, music, and movies. Single Pisces could encounter someone potentially amazing late summer 2013; married Pisces won’t face any big upsets.

In general, Maria says 2013 is the year for sex. All Zodiac signs will tend to be more explorative, willing, and open to new experiences. Perhaps it has something to do with Christian Grey...

When Bret Michaels walked into our CBS-5, Phoenix studios for an on-camera interview, he shook each of our hands, making us feel special, like we were the celebrities. As soon as I made contact with his drop-dead-gorgeous blue eyes, I knew why the rock star makes nearly every girl swoon—he was kind, endearing, and totally intriguing. That’s when I decided to approach the A-lister, persuasively asking for a one-onone interview so I could do a write-up on the man who calls Arizona home. He graciously accepted my request, and I promised him our phone interview would not exceed ten minutes. Our scheduled phone interview was set for a Sunday evening, and when the clock struck 8 p.m., my phone rang. I answered my cell as normal: This is Nadine, I said, and the response was simple, as if it were an old friend: Hey Nadine, it’s Bret. (Firstname basis— woo hoo!) And so began our conversation; the promised ten minutes turned into nearly an hour. First-name-basis Bret was on the road. He had just finished a concert in Pittsburgh and was heading to Minneapolis for another performance. In addition to talking to me, Bret was watching the Steelers game—he’s an avid fan, having grown up in Pennsylvania. Going from city to city is nothing out of the norm for Bret, as he spends nearly nine months a year doing concerts around the world. However, when he’s not rocking the crowd, Bret finds peace at his North Scottsdale pimp pad. Yep, his house sits on a couple acres. There, you’ll find his ranch equipped with dogs, cats, and horses. He loves taking pictures of his pets in addition to the Arizona wildlife that frequent his property. (Bret made sure to mention javelinas, coyotes, and snakes.) The ranch sits next to his go-kart track; he finds his chi

riding bikes and motorcycles, especially his Harley. When he ventures out on the town, you can often find Bret at Mastro’s Steakhouse. Back in 1997, Bret shot a movie with Charlie and Martin Sheen in Arizona, “No Code of Conduct,” for Miramax Dimension. He instantly fell in love with the Desert Southwest, ultimately deciding to call the Valley home. In the mid 2000s, Bret bought his North Scottsdale property, and so began his happily-ever-after in AZ. But before becoming a father, philanthropist, TV star, and Arizona resident, Bret rose to fame as the frontman of Poison. At 17 years old, Bret and his band drove out to California, determined to reach stardom and success. Since their start, the band has released eight studio albums and four live albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Poison has charted ten singles in the Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100, including the No. 1 single, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” I asked Bret if he gets tired of playing that song over and over and his response was that of a true rock star: “I sing it at every concert,” he said, “and I enjoy it every time, especially because the crowd knows every word.” It’s been 25 years since Poison debuted, and they’re still recording music, performing together, and selling out crowds. Bret told me his most memorable rock-star moment was at Texas Stadium during the Cotton Bowl. That’s where Poison shot their “I Won’t Forget You” music video. At the time, Bret was in his early 20s. Bret takes pride in writing his songs. He says he devises lyrics based on personal experience—that it’s easier to write about the absolute toughest moments of his life, like heartbreak or the death of a loved one. He’s constantly creating new songs to enhance his solo career. His most recent solo album, “Custom Built,” was released in 2010. It topped the charts, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock list. In addition to music, Bret fills his time starring on reality TV. I’m sure you affiliate the rock star with “Rock of Love,” Bret’s televised dating endeavors. In fact, the three seasons consisted of about 20 women competing to become Bret’s girlfriend. He didn’t necessarily do it to find a Mrs. Michaels; Bret says the show was all in good fun, and he had a lot of good fun doing it. However, I couldn’t resist asking Bret what he looks for in a woman. He told me beautiful eyes are an instant key to his heart, and after that cosmic physical attraction, there has to be an incredible foundation of friendship. He describes a perfect partner as a “yin” to his “yang.” Bret’s impressive television resume continues; did you catch his family-oriented

Bret also starred on Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice 3”; in fact, he won, thanks to his Trop-A-Rocka Snapple drink. He’s returning to Trump’s show in 2013, but next time around, he’ll be sitting with the Donald. Yeah, I’ll definitely be tuning in. And in spring 2013, Bret will relive his childhood on the Travel Channel. See, our Arizona rock star grew up camping with his sisters—that’s why he wanted to host “Rock my RV,” a show dedicated to custom building recreational vehicles. The program will follow families as they create their dream RVs thanks to our friend, Bret Michaels. Bret’s also a philanthropist, totally eager to spread diabetes awareness. Mr. Michaels is a lifelong diabetic, giving himself, on average, five shots a day. His foundation, Life Rocks, raises money to find a cure. “It’s a dollar in, dollar out foundation,” Bret says, “I want to help people learn to live with and manage the disease.” His philanthropic spirit doesn’t stop there. In March 2011, he performed at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night in Arizona, supporting those suffering from Parkinson’s. He was so touched by the event that he donated $20,000 of his own money to the Muhammad Ali Foundation. He’s also taken on the role of fund-raiser, raising more than $200,000 for the Barrow Brain Tumor Foundation, with a starstudded dinner in his own home. Plus, Bret’s a supporter of Scottsdale’s Camelot Therapeutic ranch providing free services to adults and children with disabilities. Ok, I must admit: By this time in our conversation, I was head over heels for Bret Michaels. So far, our interview was thorough, thoughtful, and a ton of fun. To make him even more swoon-worthy, Bret mentioned he recently released an accessory/clothing line at PetsMart. Oh boy, I just love a man who loves pampering his pups. Throughout his entire life, Bret has owned a handful of dogs. His breeds of choice are huskies and shepherds; right now, he has

two dogs: Diesel and Phoenix. (He says they are his loving protectors.) PetsMart employees literally come out to his Arizona property, and along with Bret, they come up with edgy, unique, and affordable ideas for purchase. Should your pooch be interested in Bret Michaels-inspired collars, clothes, and beds, seek out his “Pets Rock” Collection available in-store and online. Speaking of dogs, out of pure curiosity, I asked Bret what his first job was, and he said it was with Purina, loading pet food. His second job was being a bus boy, followed by a fry cook at Bob’s Big Boy. Just some fun, useless Bret Michaels information.Obviously stardom was always in Bret’s blood: he grew up playing the harmonica, piano, and guitar. His road to fame was fantastic, but, like anyone, Bret faced ups and downs. “Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, to do what you want to do,” Bret told me. Who would have thought this rocker had such soul? Bret’s a proud dad of two beautiful daughters: Raine Elizabeth is twelve, and Jorja Blue is seven. He doesn’t claim to be a very good disciplinarian, but he surely raved about being a fun father. He loves taking his girls to Cracker Jax, a Scottsdale fun park, consisting of miniature golf, gokart tracks, and an arcade. However, true happiness is often found at home chillaxing with his girls. Raine and Jorja even know his Poison songs, although he’s often forced to listen to Bieber—LOL! During our conversation, Bret made sure to mention Kristi, his daughters’ mother. I sincerely admired the man who talked about her wonderful mothering skills in addition to their civil, easy-going relationship, despite being unmarried to one another. It was refreshing to hear, considering many Hollywood broken relationships seem cruel and hostile. I thought it fitting to ask Bret about his holiday memories, as Christmas is around the corner. I just loved his answer when questioning him about his best gift ever. “When I was a kid, I got my first Steelers

uniform that came in a box. It was amazing.” Clearly Bret was on Santa’s good side, not being a naughty boy. Bret hosts Christmas at his Arizona house every year, and instead of making his favorite food (BBQ), he keeps things traditional, going for turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and cranberry sauce. This year he’ll play his annual New Year’s Eve concert in Minnesota. As our phone time clearly came to a close, I asked Bret one last question: how does he stay so humble? His response came easy, like the rest of our conversation. He says he remains in the business for all the right reasons: Bret loves making music. In March 2013, he’ll be 50 years old (thanks, Google—I didn’t ask his age!). Yet, after meeting Bret in person and talking to him for a good 45 minutes, I realized the rock star still has a lot of love to give, much music to share, and good times to have under the Arizona sun.

When the load of CO2 combined with the never-ending stream of toxic cocktails that we continuously disperse into the air and water finally reach maximum toxicity levels beyond which insect life ceases to exist, the collapse of the global food chain would follow immediately and without prejudice. We are all that deeply connected. No insects, no people; that simple. We must address this crisis now by investing in environmentally sound industrial replacements to everything that is poisoning us. Pesticides, fossil fuels, and plastics are all poisonous to the earth and all of its inhabitants. We have the technology to fix these massive problems today. We need the markets to demand these technologies and, once they do, miraculous changes will happen in a very short time. Not only is this a dire necessity for the sustainability of life on earth, it will also explosively stimulate the US economy for the next century to never-before-seen levels of abundance and prosperity. By setting new standards for the environment in the US and going headlong into making those standards a reality, we can return the US to the industrial powerhouse that built the

modern world, while simultaneously improving global living standards through the wide adaptation of these technologies that we already possess.

[Everything needs to be built again, more efficient, less waste, nontoxic materials, sustainable farming, water conservation, domestic clean energy, and on to infinity.]

When you look at the list of problems, ask yourself, could there be one solution to all of these issues? You will find that the simplest workable solution is to deal with climate change now by investing in the technology that will provide the economic resurgence needed today while securing the American dream for many generations to come.. We have to begin building massive solar, wind, and alternative agricultural infrastructure. We will not only localize the US energy and agricultural markets but localize the ownership of these key markets. The byproducts of these types of investments will lead to the creation of tens of millions of jobs. I believe these industries alone have the capacity to fuel a US industrial revolution. This is one challenge that we must rise to. Our first priority should always be protecting the one resource that should never be put into jeopardy, the ground upon which we stand.

Cardio &Rest

BY HALO MARQUES

When it comes to health, balance is everything. If you’ve been keeping up, we are on month three of implementing a holistic, healthy lifestyle. We started with the plan, moved on to healthy eating, and now we will cover outer and inner peace. Any new gym member will tell you it’s not always the weights that affect their workout; many times it’s simply not having enough stamina to accomplish their goals. On the other hand, every single person knows how exhausting sitting around can be simply from being overly stressed. I emphasize “simply” because both cardio and relaxation are so “simple” we often overlook them instead of giving them the time of day. It might seem odd to talk about getting your heart rate up for a sustained period while talking about sitting down, breathing, and just giving yourself a mental break, but they are equally important and benefit each other. Cardio or “cardiovascular exercise” has many benefits. The one I want to cover now is the hormonal effect. Cardio releases “feel good” hormones into your body that help with symptoms of fatigue and depression. Relaxation and having emotional/mental clarity is much easier to achieve without fatigue, stress, or depression. In turn, when you have ease of mind you can literally feel the extra energy that will help give you that little push to keep running or exercising. We could go on and on how the two help

46

mainstream

each other, but right now it’s just important that you can see how they synergize. Before we get into the meat of this month’s plan, I want to give you the good news. If you spent last month following the healthy eating guide, you have a huge jump-start on this month. When your body feels good from a healthy diet, you will naturally have more energy, more flexibility, and stamina, and due to feeling so good, you’ll also inherently be less stressed. If not, it’s fine, you can start now and you’ll feel the changes soon enough. Now let’s get to it.

Cardio

Slow and steady wins the race. These days any competitor will tell you the world moves too fast for that concept to be viable. Fact is, “slow and steady” really means just one thing: You’re moving! Sitting around the house and at work all day is the reason America has become the #1 country for obesity in the world. People point fingers at fast food and video games, but let’s face it, if we made sure we made time for exercise and continued with our bad eating habits and hobbies, we’d slim down the rankings. Cardio is another word like diet that just makes people uneasy. Generally we think of marathons, biking, hiking, jumping jacks, and a slew of other icky things we don’t want to do. So like everything else, I suggest another approach. By all means you can follow

the regular cardio plans and workouts, I only suggest you add something to it. Make it a game or challenge yourself to daily outdo your distance or time on cardio. The new Nike Fuel Band is amazing for cardio! It’s a game, tracking, and goal setting all in one. If it’s in your budget, I highly suggest getting one. This is one of the only times I’ll say this, but let’s step back for a minute. We all already know that cardio is “healthy” for us. I imagine most of you don’t know the details and specifics of the benefits though. This is important because the more we know, the more reasons and motivation we’ll have to follow through. The basic benefits for this exercise are weight loss (everyone’s favorite), increased metabolism (more energy and this will help you burn fat in your sleep!), better heart health, and a faster recovery time when you’re done working out. Take the time to look more into it because the list goes on and on. Just looking at those few things, you have to admit we all could use more cardio. Unfortunately many “gym body builders” will tell you to stay away from it because you can’t put the weight on as fast, but we’re talking about overall health here. Not to mention, I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather look tone and fit than be mistaken for fat because I have no definition. Plus if you work out right, eat right, and do cardio you’ll still look and feel like a million bucks. It might take a little longer, but the effect will last longer too. That’s why we all have friends that are suddenly huge and then a month or

two later have lost all their muscle mass and size. Long-term work equals longterm payoff. Write that down. Now for the never-ending question: How do I find the time? With work, kids, spouse, errands, me time, cardio time … maybe? I know it all seems a little overwhelming, but studies show 30 minutes a day of cardio in even the home can produce huge results! If that means waking up early and stretching and going for a jog or jumping jacks and burpees in your living room, just do it! I live just outside of Tempe, so what I did was get a mountain bike and started riding it every morning to Tempe Town Lake. Here’s the thing, I forgot I was even doing it for cardio. It’s cool and crisp and, as far as Phoenix goes, there are few things more beautiful than the Lake at sunrise. That’s the type of thing I mentioned earlier. Take a regular cardio exercise and find a way to trick yourself into enjoying it and wanting to do it daily. There are classes all around the valley from kickboxing to yoga, local sports teams to Zumba. If you can’t get out of the house, find different exercises to do in the house and, as crazy as it sounds, just get up and do quick little cardio sessions during commercials when you’re watching TV. You just need to be more active than you are now. Whatever sounds fun to you and will keep you engaged, just go for it. Don’t go crazy and overdo it or you’ll be stuck recuperating for a few days. Pushing yourself a little is ideal, but know your limit. Set a goal for the next month to aim for five days a week, if nothing else, a minimum of three days. It will get easier the more you do it so just find a routine. The better you feel from the hormones released, the more relaxed you’ll naturally be.

Relaxation

Who doesn’t love relaxation? Honestly, myself included, a lot of people actually hate relaxing! Not because we don’t enjoy it, but because we have so much going on in our lives we feel guilty if we take a break and because we have the need to always feel productive. While that trait looks great on a resume, in the long run it actually hurts everything we are trying to accomplish. When we overload our brains, we produce more adrenaline than normal and that can lead to insomnia. It also makes it more difficult to concentrate, stay motivated, have an appetite, and lowers sex drive. It’s important to stop and recharge your battery often so you can always be at your peak performance

level in all that you do. I always like to look at the bad side of things to find motivation. It’s great to list the things we want for the sense of ownership and accomplishment, but what about the bad things that will happen if we don’t start checking things off the list? Just a few examples of stress-related illnesses are: migraine headaches, muscle tension, heart attacks, high blood pressure, many types of cancer (stress weakens the immune system), rheumatoid arthritis, and even ulcers. Stress is the reason for 75% of all doctor visits. 75%! That number is astounding! How much are these doctor visits? How much are the medications, x-rays, tests, and so on? Can you

imagine how much time, money and, well, stress you could save? Just relax. The idea is mind boggling to some. We have been hard wired to always be on the go. That’s why relaxing sounds so easy and unneeded, yet so complex at the same time. See how we overthink that right there? Again, just stop and relax. The easiest way to relax is modifying our breathing. It doesn’t have to be for a long period of time, just be mindful of your breathing. Take 3-5 minutes and take deep breaths through your nose and out through your mouth. Concentrate on your stomach; it should fill up and your chest should remain still. Closing your eyes will help with focusing on your breathing. The level of clarity and peace you’ll find in those

few moments will be well worth it. This works because oxygen works like adrenaline in reverse. It calms the body and is good for your brain. Meditation like this is wisdom that has been around for thousands of years. Meditation is usually associated with words like “enlightenment” and “tranquility.” That’s for a reason! This is something I talk about with friends and family often and the biggest objections I get are, “I don’t know how to mediate” or, “I’m just not comfortable doing it.” I understand we all have our own comfort zones. But playing devil’s advocate, a lot of people were uncomfortable learning to drive a car and if you mess that up, you could get seriously injured or hit a pedestrian. However, the idea of getting around fast pushed us outside the comfort zone, and now driving is like walking. Doesn’t say a lot for some of these snowbirds that are always tripping over their own feet on the highway, but you get my point. Find a place in your home where you can be alone. I like to do it when I first wake up and am taking a shower; the water helps me relax. I always suggest doing it first thing when you wake up or last thing before you lay down to sleep. If you can work it into both, even better! The “how to” part is simple. Sit on level ground. Keep your back straight. Put your hands wherever they are comfortable. Start breathing how I mentioned earlier and concentrate on relaxing every part of your body. Do it in sections at first and then slowly feel out any parts of your body that still feel tense. By the time the last muscle in your body is relaxed, you will have found your center. Even better, you will have accidentally focused your breathing and that’s it. You’re meditating. Do whatever it takes to work this into your daily schedule. Like a good diet, I can promise you will feel the difference and your body will thank you for it. Once you’ve implemented this into your day to day, you will notice new mental clarity, focus, and energy. That brings me back to cardio and how these two ideas help each other. Other easy ideas are just getting more sleep or seeing a Reiki practitioner. One hour of Reiki is equal to 3-4 hours of sleep. The ultimate bang for your buck you will get is Yoga. Think about what you just read and the yin and yang of health and you’ll realize that Yoga implements both of these into one practice. Find your balance. Find the time. Stay focused. Follow the Fundamentals.

MORALES Of 101.5

JAMZ

Written by Shae Arellano • Photographed by Daveed Benito

Imagine sitting in your car, preparing to make a midday commute across the city. Through the haze of traffic you decide to tune your radio to 101.5 and you are pleasantly surprised by the sound of a sweet and sultry voice that penetrates your ears and stimulates your mind through your speakers. This warm feeling is created by on-air personality Jackie Morales. I found myself speeding to the 101.5 Jamz studio because I really wanted to catch the end of Jackie’s photo shoot with our amazing photographer David Benito before I started the interview. During the commute, I was listening to the station as I always do and appreciated her on-air shout-out to Mainstream! For the first time ever I was really nervous because she had always been my favorite on-air personality. I didn’t know what to expect. I needn’t have worried as upon the introduction I couldn’t help but feel the warm, friendly energy she was emitting. I was thankful for this opportunity. They snapped a few more photos and we started the transition for the interview.

Once we started, the very first thing that I told her was all of the positive feedback people had given me about her when I had mentioned that Mainstream was going to feature her in December’s magazine. The public could not commend her enough for being such a likeable onair personality. In her humbleness, she blushed and mentioned how honored she felt that her listeners still feel that way about her given her length of time on the radio.

It can be a hell of a challenge to get into radio, but along the way this beauty put in the hard work and the dedication that it took to get there. At 25 years old, Jackie was a stay-at-home mom who knew that she wanted to excel in her career for the future of her children, so one day when she heard a commercial for training in career broadcasting, she knew instantly that this was her calling. She recalled listening to the on-air personalities at the time and thinking of how her personality was exactly the same. This is why she decided to pursue her certification at the Academy of Radio and Television.

Jackie’s current role as the midday on-air personality for 101.5 Jamz has brought her career to some remarkable experiences. One of my personal favorite moments I researched was her interview with teen sensation Austin Mahon. I commented on how composed she seemed, how she really made him feel at home, and that she was really great at connecting with him. She giggles and says that she was actually really nervous. You certainly could not tell, which is an indication that someone is great at what she does. There are many perks to working in the radio industry, and some of the best perks are the events. The most recent event was the Halloween hook-up in which Jackie dressed up as a monster. Modeling for Phoenix Fashion Week is always a big highlight for her as well as working other promotions at the Wild Horse Pass Casino Pool party, throwing down a dance routine for National

Dance week, and many other events and appearances in which she can promote the radio station and herself.

In addition to her radio remotes and scheduled events, Jackie’s dedication to the community has led her to work for a variety of community service-based events and fundraisers; she stressed how much she loved being in the position she is in as an on-air personality because it gives her a voice to help people in need. In fact, giving is such a big part of her life that she is working on a project called “Dream Big, the world is yours.” Her goal with this experience is to empower youth to finish school, to work hard, and to know that no dream of theirs is impossible. Though she mentioned that she had some sponsors, donations are always welcome, with all proceeds going strictly to the children. She eagerly stated, “I want to change lives, and that starts with the kids.” The advice she gives to people and children is to know that no matter what their struggle they should never give up, everything is possible.

Jackie Morales exudes an energy that most people strive to achieve and absolutely beams when she talks about her three amazing children, a 17-year-old son, and 12- and 9-year-old daughters. She is so proud of the people they are becoming. When I asked how her 17-year-old son feels about having a hottie for a mom she laughs and says that he prefers her to dress down, wear minimal makeup, and keep her hair looking low key, drawing less attention to herself. To everyone else she is a stunner, but in the eyes of her children she is just

Mom, a name that she is proud to have. This love she gives her children rolls right along to the romantic love that she has for her fiancĂŠe. Yes, sorry, guys, this beautiful lady has a certain sparkle in her eye every time she speaks of him, even after six years she says she still gets butterflies when she thinks of him.

When I asked her what kind of music she likes to listen to she mentions that at an early age she was exposed to all kinds of music because she hails from a family of musicians. Her exposure included some greats like Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Madonna, and Bon Jovi, but today you can find Miguel playing on repeat in her car and she also is into The Weeknd and Ne-Yo, but she stresses that she loves all music. In this fast-paced lifestyle, Jackie still finds time to engage in another big project with C’est la Vie Entertainment. This company is an upscale, sophisticated entertainment company and Jackie has signed up to be their event host. This is a project that she is looking forward to really taking off, so be on the lookout for more information.

The combination of career, family, love, dedication to the community, and a zest for life are all things that Jackie Morales brings to the table. Her warm demeanor, caring personality, and sense of humor made me feel like I was spending the afternoon hanging out with a good friend, a feeling that I am sure she emits anytime she is around other people. The world is lucky to have such an amazing lady in it, because she is the real deal. Be sure to catch her on 101.5 Jamz Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and every other weekend and you will get a dose of what I am talking about!

Written by: Richard Baldwin Today is the day he has been waiting for; weeks, days, months all a blur, all leading up to this day, Christmas morning. He wakes first, it’s barely 7 am but his child-like excitement is bursting with anticipation. With a quick crunch he’s sitting up and ever so gently spies on his lover to be sure she is still in peaceful slumber. Butterflies in his stomach come alive sensing the thrill in the air, causing them to flutter and pull him silently onto his feet. Quickly, he collects himself and tip-toes across the freezing hardwood floor to, what appears to be his last undiscovered much-sought-after, hiding spot. With swift, deft motions he recovers the masked felt-covered box and heads down stairs to prepare. He knows her, he knows if he even so much as turns on a burner to cook she will come sauntering down the stairs looking for him. But he was ready and prepared for stealth assembly. Opening the freezer door he retrieves two frosted martini glasses he hid inside just six hours prior. A cocktail is not needed, only it’s illusion. Thus, he grabs the jar of green olives along with a single clear toothpick and without hesitation skewers the first olive. Holding the skewered green olive in one hand, he cracks open the felt Simon G. Jewelers box and removes it. It’s a ring, a ring to be proud of, a sensuously deep emerald encrusted with hundreds of intricate sculpted diamonds, seamlessly intertwined with the blush of ruby gold. This ring represents his undying love, his sacrifice in working long hours, all the time pining for her love whilst putting coin aside for this symbol of love, happiness and foresight. It displays the pride he feels about her; pairing her with a ring that captures her essence, her fortitude, along with her sophisticated elegance and breathtaking curves. One more olive on the skewer sandwiches the ring securely in the middle; water fills the glass with a lemon twist clinging to the brim, all atop a breakfast tray paired with another identical glass. With each step, light from the frosted window pane fractures and reflects off the diamonds, throwing beautiful rays of white and gold through the water and glass causing the surface of the tray to glisten. Balancing the tray of “martinis” he makes sure to hold his focus, suppressing his anxiety and thrill in order to avoid a catastrophe as she watches curiously amused. Swooping to her side he holds the tray before her. Befuddled, she offers a half-hearted laugh looks at him playfully and asks, “Is it already 5 o’clock somewhere darling?” With that he flashes her a smile as he clears his throat and hands her the “martini”. Pause. She’s consumed with curiosity and overlooks her glinting gift. He revels in her demeanor for but a moment then holding the silence, raises his glass to a toast reaches for her hand and just above a whisper.... “As I walk through life I observe nature and its beauty. This time of year has unparalleled beauty, the earth sheds itself of the past with the falling of the leaves and greens aging to golden browns. It appears to be dying, only in reality the earth is only preparing for a new season. Snow frosts the slopes creating a mystique and anticipation as to what lies beneath, bountiful life, bountiful beauty and new beginnings. This holiday season I frost you, my love, with this symbol of love, appreciation, beauty, new beginnings and shedding of pasts. ....” A slight blush warms her cheek, for a few breaths she closes her eyes, basking in the moment. These words, this ring, this man. The blink felt like a thousand blinks but when she opened her eyes and looked into his, it’s as if she awoke for the first time and realized the man who stood before her was the man she would stand beside the rest of their lives.
