THE inventiveness and energy in Christchurch post-earthquakes has boosted the city in the ranks of popular travel guide Lonely Planet. The guide looks a year ahead at what is going to be trendy and Christchurch has been named sixth in the list of the top 10 cities to visit in 2013. Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter said the innovation following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes would attract tourists. Mr Hunter said there was more positive momentum in Christchurch rather than negative. “Energy and inventiveness is a really good reason for travellers to come here,” he said. This innovation is especially in areas close to the city such as Addington, which Lonely Planet has named one of New Zealand’s most hot and happening places. Mr Hunter said this was due to it being close

to Christchurch city and the plentitude of space available to businesses, as well as its many cafes, bars and restaurants. “It is a logical place for people to gravitate,” he said. There have also been plenty of restaurants being opened around the central city such as Fiddlesticks and the St Asaph St Kitchen and at least another four were due to open by the end of the year. These restaurants would tend to remain close to the city, Mr Hunter said. “Life in the suburbs is fun but not very sociable.” Mr Hunter said the initiative of the Ballantynes, Carter and Guthrey families to develop 25,000 square metres of the central city was positive as having such a large area being developed by one group of people would result in something

that was well thought out and architecturally attractive. In the meantime projects such as the Restart container mall and Gap Filler brought energy to the city, Mr Hunter said. The Gap Filler initiative to create community projects in the spaces left by demolished earthquakes and a fear the rebuild would be done quite hastily.
Big ideas wanted CHRISTCHURCH under-25-year-olds are being asked for ideas that will transform the south-east corner of the city into a fresh, vibrant and happening place for youth, with the best idea winning $5000. The ‘Big Idea’ campaign is the brain child of the CPIT Foundation. Chair Carl Pascoe said it aimed to give Christchurch’s young people an opportunity to put their stamp on their city. “We want the Big Idea to not only give young people a voice, we want to try and turn their Big Idea into a reality. This is a serious competition with the winner receiving $5000 as well as the support and backing of the CPIT Foundation to try and make their Big Idea happen. ”The top three Big Ideas will be presented by the Foundation to Canterbury decision makers at a formal function in December. We want those people to hear what young people want for their city and what they need in the city to encourage them to stay in Christchurch beyond their compulsory education.” The Big Idea can come from an individual or a group with entries closing on December 1.
