EDITOR
Hello Maharanis! Oh what a year. A year that began with the best intentions to be the start of an unforgettable decade, unfolded to be just that. The world and life as we know it has stopped; and while societies disagree on how to handle most circumstances, it is through events, like weddings, that strengthens the fabric of our communities. 2020 has humbly shown the citizens of the world what each of us have to be grateful for. As a company when we looked deeper into our core, we were able to reflect on who Maharani Weddings is and what we are passionate about. Since our inception we have had an unwavering commitment to showcasing all celebrations of love. And, Corona couldn’t take that away. In this year’s magazine we feature those weddings that showcased the year best. To put it simply, this collection of weddings was unstoppable. A few of the weddings were impromptu, others set out to be big Bollywood type affairs that were quickly paired down to a backyard. Some were even missing parents. In true 2020 fashion, nothing went as planned. These couples overcame tough circumstances and by using their patience, flexibility, and communication. To sum it up, they were troopers. It is with immense gratitude that we have the privilege of showcasing this selection of weddings. The couples and vendors gave wedding enthusiasts, like myself, something to rejoice about, find happiness in, and brought broad smiles from underneath our masks. A moment to fall in love and forget about lockdowns, quarentines, or curfews. They are the warm moments that will live in our hearts forever. From enchanting stories about Erica’s disco boots, to Aleena’s bridal baraat, Krishana & Mehul who just slipped by Covid, and how could I not mention Sharon & Anuj Gatsby-esqu affair...these wedding coming to life before our eyes gave us a glimmer of hope into the future. From the bottom of my heart, I am so thankful for each and every one of the couples we featured this year. The team at Maharani Weddings and I have high hopes for 2021. We look forward to sharing new love stories, ideas, inspirations, vendors, and venues all with you. We are seeing the rebirth of weddings with new meaning, new life, and new appreciation. Despite the changes to all of our plans, as a company we remain extremely appreciative of all the friends, families, clients, and colleagues who have made it possible for us to continue to do what we love each day. And let me say, we adore our Platinum Guide vendors. And, for those vendors who have moved on this year, we wish you all the best on your new journey. I know you will bring creativity and passion to anything you do. My mom always told me new beginnings are wonderful in so many ways. All in all, the fluidity and resilience of the entire wedding community - couples and vendors to bring every 2020 weddings to life was part innovation, part necessity, and part survival. And, no matter if you were newly engaged, newlyweds, or celebrating your diamond anniversary, never have vows been tested like they have been this year. And on that note, the vows we all know have never been more true... For better or worse, for richer or poor, in sickness and in health….. to have and to hold...

Jas and Parm’s love story first began when they both happened to swipe right on Bumble. After a few clumsy jokes (on Jas’ part) and some great initiative (on Parm’s part), they met a for the first time. Parm planned the perfect first date – simple, fun and right up Jas’ alley. They spent hours walking and talking along the river with the sun shining on them, having lunch, and walking some more. They enjoyed each other's company so much that they decided to get coffee just to keep the date going; and although the date finally ended after 6 hours, it was the first of 4 dates that week alone! No thanks to COVID-19, the couple’s wedding plans went upside down. The guest list was cut from 400 to a beautifully intimate 35 person backyard ceremony. It was the perfect blend of a very Western style wedding while maintaining important Sikh traditions. Congratulations Jaspreet & Patrick!

After meeting on Bumble, Cynthia and Ankur shared many hours talking that finally led to a hike, overlooking the Manhattan Skyline in the Palisades and a ring. Clearly, a planner, Cynthia had her wedding venue, dress and key vendors chosen even before the proposal. Originally planned for October 31, 2020, this type A bride was done with most of the planning by January 2020. The couple envisioned a multi day affair with two ceremonies - A Catholic ceremony and a Hindu ceremony. Derailed by Covid questions about deposits and distancing guidelines swirled about, however, thanks to the vendors the wedding was as the Bride put it, “absolutely fantastic.” To accommodate weather, the wedding was moved to September and personal details filled the wedding. Handmade signs, programs, games, cakes and cupcakes were some of the details that the family was able to DIY. The wedding came to life because of the people involved. And they had the dogs! The Groom even made them their very own pup-cakes.

Not your typical Bollywood beginning... there was no music, no impending parental disagreement, but this story is truly a fairy tale. They had known each other for four years, but it wasn’t until a medical mission trip in December 2018 that connected them. “Bivin and I ventured to Kenya to volunteer. There, in Kenya, we finally got to see into each other’s hearts. Ironically, it took traveling halfway across the world to get to know one another in a few short days. We carried forward our relationship after coming back to America, and I realized how he was the one I prayed for.” A Bollywood-obsessed girl and a sportsloving boy dreamed of a 600 person wedding with a bridal party of 44! Those plans were humbly tailored to an intimate 42 person wedding. The wedding perfectly reflected a delicate balance of two unique cultures, the bride’s family is from Punjab, while the groom’s is from Kerala.

After meeting On Coffee Meets Bagel these travel junkies couldn’t stop smiling. Enjoying the planning process they were originally set for March 28, 2020. They planned a large wedding but in typical 2020 style, they were forced to postpone. A new date was set as December 6, 2020 and once again planning was underway to have the original lavish, bollywood affair. Yet again dreams of wedding bells went sideways and was drastically downsized to just immediate family!

The modern couple decided to incorporate some conventional details into their coastal bohemian wedding. With gold paying homage to the Maharashtrian yellow they moved forward with white, gold, and touches of blue and green. Without doubt, the most memorable moment was the surprise after party the couple’s siblings hosted. After the wedding celebration, donning masks and distanced, the couple was greeted with a get together with a handful of friends. With charming detail like a cookie table, a pizza vendor, and lawn games, it was a sweet ending to this extra special day. 79

Maharani Erica hadn’t given her wedding a sliver of thought until the day she had a ring on her finger. In the expert hands of Denise Lillie, Erica formed her own vision for the event by delicately blending her laid back California style with Indian customs. Originally, we set for three magnificent days of events with 300 guests, Erica & Anuj had to change all their plans. They ended up having a wonderfully intimate Half Moon Bay wedding that felt dreamy, authentic to themselves, and we might add drop dead gorgeous! In true covid fashion, and no dance floor, the room was instead adoringly filled with eloquent, and tear-inducing toasts for the bride & groom that flooded the evening with warmth and humor. This couple met at an ice cream shop in Atlanta and soon they were sharing stories and dreams together over the phone and three hour car trips back and forth from Alabama. After a proposal in March of 2020, they started planning their July 12, 2020 wedding. Tradition dictated the bride’s choice and undoubtedly she went with red. Being adventurous and exploring new places made this couple’s dating period full of meet ups in new cities every weekend! That led to a life altering weekend in Clearwater, Florida in April 2019. Mehul had planned a date on the beach and to the bride’s delight she found a romantic setting with every little detail you could imagine! Walking towards the water, as the sun began to set, a proposal started their unique happily ever after. The couple started to plan exactly a year before their wedding date March 1st, 2020. They decided to introduce each other's family and planned a family meeting at the groom’s sister’s residence in Ohio. We both wanted a beach wedding (the bride reports she wanted) so with sand, surf, and sun as inspiration they started to explore venues.

After meeting on a set up by a mutual friend, these two love birds hit it off immediately. A series of dates followed and after their first trip together a proposal officially made them an item. The bride and groom wanted windows to allow natural light for their ceremony and The One Events found just the venue. It was all settled until the pandemic caused everything to change. Just two weeks before the scheduled wedding, the couple’s original venue closed, so luckily Sejal and the team were able to secure another last minute venue that fit the couple’s vision and allowed for COVID guidelines. The vendors for Dimpa & Amar’s wedding are the definition of flexibility. Unable to meet for a trial, Artee from Blush and Glow even did a meeting over Zoom to go over the bride’s wedding looks. And, Divine Decor of Dallas made countless accommodations to the regal decor. After hours of brainstorming and outlining, the vendor team brought the couple’s dream wedding to life.

In this past year of incredible ambiguity and anxiety, we have been and will continue to be deeply committed to our mission, brides, couples, families, and readers. This year we knew we couldn’t just have any cover for the magazine. We needed a cover that reflects and addresses the emotional state of everyone involved. Shot by Priyanca Rao Photography, we sat down with real bride Neena Arora to find out more about her unique wedding story.
Shawna : When did you find out your wedding was going to be postponed? How did you feel? Neena : "When we first got engaged, we thought this would all be over by the Fall, so we really didn't think our wedding would be postponed. We still figured we could have a wedding by the end of the year. Things started to open up around July and we saw a small amount of weddings happening, and thought there was light at the end of the tunnel. At the time, we had planned on getting married on October 10, 2020. Then, we started to see spikes again, and realized that was not going to happen. I haven't seen my parents since Christmas of 2019, so to get engaged and then not be able to figure out when I could see them or even have them attend our wedding was incredibly stressful. It just felt like everytime we thought of an idea or a plan and started to get excited, something would happen, and we would have to pivot all over again." Shawna : I saw you got married‌.was this celebration different than the one you have envisioned? How so? Neena : Very much so. We got married on December 4, 2020. The only people at our wedding were the officiant, and three of our friends. No parents, no family of any kind. We are both Punjabi and envisioned a big Indian wedding. We planned our actual wedding in a week. We have a private library on the rooftop of our building looking over the city and we got married there right before sunset. We got our ready in our building and Priyanca documented the entire day. My best friend from middle school drove overnight with her entire family just to be with me on our special day. My other friend who is essentially my little sister made sure she was there while being on a global work panel that day. My husband's college friend took off work and came to help him get ready. In no way would I have thought this would have been our wedding when we got engaged. But when I say the word magical, it really is the only word I can use to describe it. It was intimate, stress free, and full of love from people near and far. It really was about the two of us.
Shawna : It was really important to Maharani Weddings to use a real bride, not a model for the cover. What was it like when you were asked to be the face of the issue? Neena : "I am still in shock that I was asked! It was such an honor when Priyanca called me! I think having a real bride is powerful because no matter what planning a wedding is stressful, but what has happened in 2020 is really something that only being a bride during this time can really understand."
Shawna : How do you feel coronavirus has changed weddings? Has it changed your wedding? Neena : “It really makes you put in perspective what is really important about weddings. To me, "it's not where, but who you're with that really matters" is a quote I keep coming back to a lot. The things you think are important before COVID-19 and now, to me are so different. My wedding was absolutely not what I had planned, but you learn to realize what really matters and who really matters. The level of support I got from my friends and family during this has been amazing, and it really is all about quality vs quantity. And to me I can honestly say I had the perfect wedding.” Shawna : What are your wedding plans in the future? Neena : “We would love to see our friends and family for a celebration. And, HUG people in person one day when it is safe to do. God willing that will happen, but if it doesn't, I have no regrets. I got my happily ever after.”

Romance can blossom anytime and any place, and this chance meeting really warms us from head to toe. A few Halloweens ago, dressed as Princess Jasmine, Sharon, met her Prince Charming, Manraj. But, it was at an Akhand Path that morning where Sharon first noticed Manraj in a handsome pair of socks! Fast forward a through countless dates and late night conversations to a summer vacation in San Sebastian, Spain. Needless to say, a surprise proposal was the highlight of that summer. They began planning their wedding months later during COVID, and decided early to plan for an outdoor wedding. Unable to go to India the bride shopped online and connected with onsite stylists. Through a series of video calls, she was able to “visit” the showrooms with the teams from Shymal & Bhumika and Manish Malhotra and even take measurements!
