It’s been SIX years since MAGX issue #1 hit the valley. We’ve created 72 issues since then, almost a Million copies featuring music art & entertainment on a local and national level. To commemorate (and so that we don’t forget) all the cool stuff we’ve been lucky enough to do these last 6 years, I decided to dedicate this issue to reprinting some of our favorite national music interviews with some of todays top artists. We’ve had everything from Metal, Hip Hop, Electronic to Rock, and great artists like Skrillex, As I Lay Dying, Chevelle, Between The Buried And Me, Filter, Motley Crue, Dragon Force, Vinnie Paul and so many more and it was hard narrowing it down to my FIVE favorite NATIONAL interviews. None the less, that is all we had room for, and It took a while but I dug through all the old copies of MAGX and pulled out these top FIVE. If you ask me next month they would probably be different but on the following pages you will find my picks. Also, don’t forget to join us Saturday November 26th @ Smokin Aces in McAllen for the MAGX JAM 6 year anniversary party. PARTY ROCK JUST DON’T STOP...

It was about 1:05 on a typical Monday afternoon at MAGX, I was awaiting a call from a member of LMFAO, the Electro Hip-Hop duo that stormed the summer with their smash single “I’m in Miami.” The phone rings and I hear “What up playa pimp?” I don’t think I was fully prepared for what I was getting into. Researching the group the first thing I came upon was a short story regarding the name they chose so I decided to ask... Is it true that Grandma Goodfoot named your group? It’s totally true, it all came about through ichat. Grandma Goodfoot quite a crafty old lady. How was the halloween look alike experience for you? It was great. It’s something that lets you know your doing the right thing. When so many people wanna copy your image to celebrate a holiday it’s just wow. I almost wanted to dress up like Red Foo! Your new video for LALALA is awesome. Do you feel it’s important to have a sense of humor in music? It’s filled with prolific keytar playing, beautiful women and cool graphics. I think that’s one of the most important things in music even if it is a serious subject or something that hits you hard, it’s always good to add humor to it because I think it’s easier for people to understand when its funny. You gotta poke fun at yourself. If you have no humor you aren’t gonna have much fun in life. What was it like working with LIL

JON on the song Shots? It was fun everyone in Lil Jon’s camp is family they are all party animals. We had so much fun in the studio with Lil Jon we were drunk most of that song! We just took shots and hit record.

because about 3 days after we completed it the track was getting played all over the place. Is there anyone out there you’ve been really wanting to work with?

What do you have to say to the blog “The Sexist” which calls your song Shots a date rape jam. Which I don’t agree with btw.

Right now, it’s really about pushing ourselves and seeing how far we can take it creatively. If something comes our way we’re not opposed to it. We like keeping it in the cool. It’s hard doing songs with a person because we like to perform our songs live. You can’t really perform without the guest spots so we like to keep it in the house. Red Foo, Sky Blu.

It’s probably some middle age mother whose daughter came to our show and got boned! The daughter knows we’re sexy dudes. So just deal with it. The song is not “Roofies, Roofies, Roofies” it’s “Shots, Shots, Shots” a celebration of a pass time the majority of us partake in. So seriously, don’t be jealous about the size of my package. You’ve done a multitude of remixes and guest spots with everyone from Kanye to Pitbull to Chris Cornell which have been your favorites? The Love Lockdown (Kanye West) is pretty amazing because how fast we were able to speed it up. After that all of our remixes have taken flight at that speed. It was pretty cool | 9 | MAGX

How are things different touring now that your record (party rock) is out? It’s great because people know all the songs. When the record wasn’t out some people knew a few tracks off of myspace but now every song off the album when we perform they sing. Every song on our record is catchy and could be a single and I like that. How is the writing process for LMFAO? is it very planned or is a lot freestyle?

It’s more of an inspiration of the moment thing. Any situation could be a song, its really about what inspires us. Oh! that’s a great song! We don’t really like being those guys that are like alright we’re gonna right this bumpin’ jam and they gonna dance it in the club and it’ll be funny. Like for example we came up with I Am Not a Whore when we were at a club trying to pick up women. They would always compliment our hair and that’s where the conversations would end. So Red Foo one day was like I’m gonna accuse them of sleeping with me. He kind of shocked me because I was more than sure it would backfire. So I’m watching Foo and this random girl is like “I like your hair.” and he responds with “Just cause your flattering me with compliments I’m not gonna sleep with you, you can’t be grabbing my booty and such. So I’m here thinking that’s amazing he’s got a random chick touching his booty. I mean, he’s just kicking it true. We’re not whores but we like to do it. What can people expect from a headlining Party Rock tour?

A traveling drunk circus is what it’s best described as. We got a bunch party animals on this show Far East Movement, Paradiso Girls, and Space Cowboy. We also have a lot of magical pelvic thrusts going on. You haven’t seen thrusts like these. Elvis would die twice if he were to see the thrusts we messing with.

LMFAO’S 5 FAVORITE SHOTS

What’s one thing you want people to come away with from listening to the record? We want them to definitely catcha a buzz but not a hangover. If you are the DD we want you to go away with 2 chicks on your arm. If your a girl then vice-versa. If you like dudes do your thing. It’s all about the party spirit. Just celebrate being yourself, if you wanna dress in marshmallows do your thing. This is your second visit to the Rio Grande Valley. What do you think of the region? It’s great, i think some of our drunkest moments have been there. No joke. The weather, the people, everything is nice. The ladies are crazy!

DEADMAU5 (pronounced DEAD MOUSE) is a Grammy-nominated electronic artist known for his unique sound, unique stage performance, and even more unique attire. Please do not refer to DEADMAU5 as a DJ. He is not a DJ. For one, he DOES NOT USE TURNTABLES OR CDs. For another, look at his setup on YouTube. com and you will know that he simply does not belong in the DJ category at all. He is an innovator in the genre and should be respected as such. He plays to thousands and thousands of people while wearing a giant head of a mouse with bug eyes and a smile so happy it’s almost sinister. In 2008 he was the most-selling artist on Beatport.com with more than 30,000 digital downloads with his singles Not Exactly, Faxing Berlin, and Ghosts N Stuff On May 1, 2008, Deadmau5 became the most awarded producer/remixer of the Beatport Music Awards. He was named “Most influential, forward-thinking and relevant person” by Beatport. He was also named “Producer of 2007” by DJ magazine’s 2007 Top 100 winner Armin van Buuren, and by runner up Tiësto. In 2008, he placed number 11 in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, tying Infected Mushroom for the highest new entry in the poll’s history, showing DEADMAU5’ fast rise to prominence. Later, DEADMAU5’ collaboration with Kaskade, Move for Me, reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart. In 2009, he was nominated for Grammy Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Remix) by Morgan Page featuring Lissie. And most recently, his alias was used for a radio station in an upcoming Nintendo DS game, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Needless to say, it wasn’t easy getting ahold of Mr. MAU5, but as I always say “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Enjoy another MAG-X-CLUSIVE with DEADMAU5! Remember to keep reading MAGX, and if you have anyone you’d like to see in the magazine, email me to frank@magxonline.com. OH YEAH....Did I mention he has a band with TOMMY LEE called WTF!? -Frank X! Within the last 2 years, you have toured the world, collaborated with some of the best in electronic music, and even had to time to attend the Grammy’s (nominated for best electronic song), What do you do to keep things fresh? Well, some studio time would be nice! What has been the highlight of your career thus far? WOW! I have been so lucky I have had so many now. But playin’ in Creamfields, Argentina was just INSANE! All the awards have meant a lot. as well. Do you happen to have any pre-show rituals? Yes, I’m just quiet and like to be in my dressing room to gather my thoughts. How was it working with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero? We are really good friends and spending time at Tommy’s making music was great. We are now both so busy. I think we will fi nd it difficult to make more music, but we will try. What does Deadmau5 like to do on his time off? I just like being in the studio and making music. How does it feel to have fans that will go to the extent of tattooing the Mau5 on their bodies, and even making their own versions of the Mau5head? It’s just crazy. I love it and we have now started a section on my website just so we can put there pictures there.

You seem to be in a league of your own when it comes to the electronic music industry. Explain to us the ingredients in making your amazing original sound.

That’s a tough question. Maybe Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff because I made it in a hotel room in London for Pete Tong as I was going to be on his shot that weekend.

Now that would be giving you my secrets. Just know that I have worked hard at building my studio and on how to make my sound.

What are your plans for 2009 as far as touring and music production?

Your live setup is very unique replacing traditional turntables and CDJs for Ableton Live and the touch screen Lemur. How do you feel this setup defers from using the old-school approach?

Touring all over the world again and a new mix album for the end of the year.

Well, for a start, no CDs. This setup allows to do so much more when playing live. I’m able to mix and re-mix on the fl y.

You have collaborated with producers such as Adam K and vocalist Sydney Blu to create very epic and moving music. How has it been to put your touch on songs such as the Grammy nominated I Remember?

What’s been your favorite show so far?

I like to work with other people and singers.

CREAMFILEDS, ARGENTINA. I had 65,000 people chanting my name!

If this interview takes place, you will be featured on our May issue alongside Dragonforce and Papa Roach, how does it feel to be alongside artists of another genre?

Tell us about your signature Deadmau5 helmets. There have been many styles. Are there any ideas that could possibly top the sound activated color changing eyes? There is a very special one being built for this summer, but I can’t say any more about that right now, but be on the look out for it. What is your favorite food on the road?

That’s great because it means I’m not being put in a box like other electronic performers. Lastly, what kind of breakfast cereal does Deadmau5 enjoy? Just this morning in the airport lounge in Toronto I had Rice Krispies! MAU5 X

SUSHI…AND MORE SUSHI What is to be expected at a Deadmau5 show? Great visuals and amazing music. Tell us about your experience at the Grammys. How does it feel to go up against groups like Justice and to know your music is relevant in today’s society? It’s amazing to be nominated along with those guys. My favorite track is definitely The Reward is Cheese. What has been your favorite track to create so far?

As the wind from an unforgiving cold front whipped across every inch of exposed flesh of the 13,000 concert goers at Concrete Street Ampitheater, one of nine figures on stage held the microphone to his mouth. “I want to f*cking hear you sing it from the bottom of your hearts,” Corey Taylor screamed. “This song’s called Dead Memories.” With energy explosive enough to simultaneously trigger mosh pits and orgasms, Slipknot erupted into a frenzy of controlled chaos. The powerhouse of sound to Taylor’s left was Chris Fehn and the thunderous roar of his metal drum kit. Now rewind to about four hours earlier, when the freezing weather was only a few grey clouds looming threateningly over the empty stage, the thousands of mesmerized onlookers were only a few hundred fans lined in clusters at the front gate, and Fehn sat on a black futon in a backstage trailer, the air tinged with the scent of Glade air fresheners, and the skin beneath the tattoo of his on-stage alter ego inked his right leg was visibly swollen from a chipped shin only a few shows into their tour. In addition to Fehn’s slip from his drum kit, turntable master Sid Wilson broke his feet, drummer Joey Jordison broke his ankle, and singer Corey Taylor injured his hand onstage all within the first few months of their tour. “It’s certain things all the time, but it’s just part of it,” Fehn said. “It’s something every day.” The American leg of the All Hope is Gone tour made a stop in Corpus Christi on Feb. 21, and the band will continue gigging into July of this year. “It’s been going awesome. We’re seeing how much bigger we’re getting though all the hard work we’ve been doing,” Fehn said. “More people are showing up to see the band, and it really keeps us going.” Fourteen years into Slipknot’s career, the band is determined to give each live show everything they’ve got. “We’re getting a little older, but it’s still the same intensity and still the same energy,” Fehn said. “I think we take chances, and our live show’s definitely different than a lot of people’s. It’s really energetic and cool to watch, and we just take everything to the next level and try to stay on top of the game.”

All Hope is Gone, their fourth studio album, was released in Aug. 2008 and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart the following September. “It feels great. It was like the final place that we needed to get, and we finally did it, so now it’s like it can only go up from here,” Fehn said. As they have done with their previous albums, Slipknot gave themselves plenty of breathing room after Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses) to make sure everything was just as fresh and innovative the next time around. “We take a lot of time off between records, and that gives everybody time to step away and write on the off time and then come back even stronger,” Fehn said. By the time a track is given the green light to be included on a record, it has passed through nine different musicians and about a month of tweaking. “It usually starts off with drums tracks, and then the guitars come in,” Fehn said. “I usually wait for Corey to do the vocals, that way I can get into the songs better

and figure out what parts I’m going to do.” Much of his influence comes from the old school metal that he grew up on like Clutch, Metallica and Slayer. “I still think we hold true to our Slipknot sound, but Corey is obviously singing a little more on this one than the other ones, and it’s a direction that we’re glad to go in because he’s really talented,” he said. “We keep real close control on the music, so it only gets on the record if we like it.” Also new to the album was the man behind the scenes, producer Dave Fortman who has worked with acts like Evanescence, Otep and Mudvayne. “He’s a really good drummer, so doing the drum parts, it was really cool having someone who knew how to communicate percussion wise,” Fehn said. Of all the new tracks, he marks “Gematria” as his favorite because of “how heavy it is and how driving it is.” “It’s our art, our songs,” he said. “They all have a special meaning.” The more brutal the music and stage

| 19 | MAGX

performance, the more chill Fehn and the rest of Slipknot can be when they step away from the soundboard and bright lights. “It’s [about] allowing yourself to get some energy out that you might not otherwise have with some other styles of music,” he said “All of my friends, we all grew up in the metal world, and we all turned out fine. Everybody’s pretty mellow.” Seeing as how it’s probably more fun to release your inner demons in front of throngs of screaming fans than spending all day in anger management, Slipknot will likely be doing their best to keep the metal dream alive for another 14 years. “It’s just good that we’re still here and still a viable band in the world and still have all the original members. That’s saying a lot to how we feel about the band,” Fehn said. “[We’re] just taking a risk sticking with it and believing that what we’re doing is what we want to do.”

We love Dethklok, the cartoon metal stars of Metalocalypse on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. So when we were given the opportunity to interview them, we asked the MagX readers to send in questions for Dethklok in an attempt to make our readers a bigger part of the magazine. Was it a good idea or a bad one? Read on and find out. If you are illiterate, blind or just plain hate reading....you can listen to the interview in it’s entirety online at MySpace.com/magxzine. MagX: We are on the phone with dethlok. Nathan Explosion: You Mean DethKLOK! It happens all the time. Geez, how famous do you have to get... MagX: Cheyo from McAllen asks...Can Dethklok fans expect a collaboration album or song with Dr. Rockso the rock and roll clown in the near future... Nathan: No, No way , I would rather see him dead... I would rather see a dead clown on the fl oor than let him into our studio...absolutely not... maybe. MagX: Kat from Mission, Tx asks : Why does Tokie build model

airplanes? Swisgarr: (He is) the rhythm guitar player in a band and he kinda feels insecure about (his) place (he can’t play as fast as someone else can) then you come up with little hobbies to occupy your time...you know set aside time to hate yourself...and you may as well build a model while your doing that... MagX: Louie from San Benito, Tx asks: What’s it like knowing you can destroy any other metal band in the world with a snap of a fi nger... Nathan:Well I will tell you this... I am not interested in destroying other bands... with metal we got to stick together... thats the truth... we run into all

this other bands all the time... they are all good guys and hard workers... I don’t want to kill any metal bands... thats why we stopped having metal bands open for us because they die..the audience will kill them... we want to see those guys alive.. I don’t want to sound like... you know... I would kill someone but not just for fun...I would like to kill them for revenge... I would have a good reason... MagX: Chris from Edinburg, Tx ask: If you all are so metal why don’t you have tattoos? Pickles: Everybody’s got tattoos these days... everybody’s got Dethklok tattoos on there lower back... but you know I am surprised that I have not gotten so drunk that I have not gotten tattooed

| 20 | MAGX

yet... but murder face has tattoos... so in your face dude... he’s got... you can see it when he lifts his shirt...its says pobodys nerfect...and then there is another tattoo... this mess is a place... we got tattoos... but don’t worry about us not being brutal enough... i think we now what we are doing. MagX: Naida from Edinburg ask: I want to know how Nathan Explosion gets his hair so slick and shiny? Nathan: I don’t know... Shampoo...sometimes shampoo and sometimes greases... I found out that sleeping on my hair makes it look cool...I don’t think I have any secrets... other then to sleep on it... and then wash it once every couple shows.

MagX: Isaac from Edinburg asks: How big does your shween have to be to bust a bass solo with it? Nathan: Murd is not here again but... MagX: Have you seen his shween? Nathan: Yeah...I mean we have lived together... he walks around naked all the time... we are use to it... but I guess some people have not seen it but if you are up close I guess you could see it... but... Swisgarr: Can I butt in here for a second and talk about guitar techniques... you know for me I can only play with a very small pick... dunlop jazz 3 pick that helps me play my guitars real fast and sometimes its better

| 21 | MAGX

to have the small instruments to play with... its all about technique and what you do with it... rather than how big its gots to be... MagX: Next question is from JoAnn in Edinburg: What happened to Murder face’s band planet piss? I know he is not here.. Nathan: Ohh.. here we go... Its not like I don’t want to talk about Murder Face... its just that he is not here...but you know he gets really excited about these little side projects... you know he gets a real good start but he never really follows through...he claims to really want to be a song writer...but he... Swisgarr: He just sits around and complains about stuff...and then the bass parts come in and I comes in and I does his bass parts for him... and then he leaves...he says hes got to go do his works on PLANET PISS... Nathan: Well anyway... he gets a little side tracked. MagX: This next question is for Nathan Explosion from Zod in McAllen Tx. If your ex-girlfriend Rebecca Nightrod ever recovers from her coma, will you start dating her again? Nathan: See this is where it kinda gets personal... she is still in the comma and I visit her and I gotta say hey...At a risk of sounding crass..

I like her more now then I have ever liked her...she is a great listener. I don’t know if she woke up and start talking again...I guess we would have to have a pretty serious conversation... MagX: This next question is for Pickles the drummer from Zod: You seem to be good natured compared to the rest of the band.. what would you be doing if you were not the drummer from Dethklok? Pickles: I would try to take a stab at the guitar for Dethklok...I don’t know...people ask me this all the time...people want to know.. “Hey you are in a rock and roll band what do you do if you don’t have a rock and roll band”... you don’t go to a doctor and say “oh wow you are really good at being doctor. What else, now go do something else...stop being that and go be something else.... what else would you be good at...helping people out in a different way”... yeah I would do music some other way... I don’t know... maybe I would tap my feet around cause I have rhythm... I don’t know... what would you do if you stopped asking questions? MagX: Hey... Thats a good question...I don’t know Pickles: Now what would you do...What else would you ask? Not questions because you cant do that no

more... MagX: Alright we got one more... It’s for Tokie who is not there... Right? Nathan: No he is not here...but we can... I like to answer for him anyway because Swisgarr will start Swisgarr: Wait no... let me answers for him... I knows exactly whats going on in his mind all the times MagX: What the hell is up with the dredlock comb over? Pickles: It’s my hair cut...thats not Tokie. MagX: Oh...the question addresed to Tokie Pickles: Yeah... I’m Pickles...I mean, I don’t understand the question... Why do I style my hair? I want to know...

| 22 | MAGX

don’t beat around the bush...like what... what about it.. MagX: I don’t know Zod from mcallen asked that question... Pickles: I am no rocket scientist but that is not a great question... I will tell you... I will tell you... I mean listen... you’re a guy... half of the guys lose there hair...right... you will probably loose your hair...the other guys in the band a couple of years they will lose there hair...thats part of rock and roll... that will happen to you... if you cant make it look awesome... then whats the problem MagX: And you know what... you do rock it. Pickles: You don’t have to tell me that... I know! MagX: Well Dethklok, I

would like to thank you for your time... this has been an... interesting interview... Nathan: What the Hell does that mean...”an interesting interview...” those are some really charged words.. nice non-biased journalism..”This has been a very interesting interview...” (mockingly) F**k you... (Hangs Up.) MagX: Hello? Operator: if you like to make a call... please hang up and try your call again... if you need help hang up and dial your operator...
