Electronic artist, Alan Taylor West at his warehouse studio in Weslaco Texas.

- Alan Taylor West

He is a one man show, an electronic composer who can blow your brain out of your

head, snatch it right out of the air, and take it with him on an electro-futuristic musical journey of big fat beats, space pianos, alien strings & synths. More than a DJ, he composes electronic music on the fly with an

assortment of keyboards, sequencers and other electronic music machines at his side. After watching ATW’s youtube performances, we were blown away and drove out to Weslaco the next night to take some pics and explore the mind of

ALAN TAYLOR WEST. Why music as your form of expression?

I can most accurately express my self through music. It seems as if I was meant to write music. When did you realize you wanted to create music? My brother is much older than me and he is a musician. I wanna say that he most likely planted the seed when I was very young. The first instrument I took up seriously was the drums. I was 13. One of my friends convinced me that we needed to make a band. What sparked your interest in electronic music? I do not want to make the music of yesterday. Most want to make the music of today. I want to make the music of tomorrow. If you were born in 1995, You would have no idea what life is like without cell phones, mp3's, internet, and social networkMAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.11

ing. The new generation lives in a very electronic world. Who are your influences? Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I love Mozart What equipment do you use? I use 2 Korg electribe's. The SX, and the MX. I have a micro Korg. It gets used quite a bit. I have a Korg X5D as well. All the synthesizer sounds in it were programmed by J.B. He lives in Germany. I have a couple lasers. I am using my computer now more than anything . What is your favorite piece, or the lynch pin of your

equipment collection? What can't you live without?

This is not the coolest answer, but in all honesty... It would be my computer.

Where did you grow up? I moved around a bit. I lived down here, and in Memphis for the most part. My family came to the R.G.V. in 1992

What is your favorite song you’ve created?

This new one I have produced. Hardly anyone has heard it. I have not named it yet. It sounds beautiful, and tragic.

How many albums have you released? I released one full length, or L.P. "In Death I Learned to Live"

Are you working on a new one? I am. I just

finished a track for it. It's going to be called "Every Day is a Phenomenon" still have much work to do on it.

about the 3rd week I would show up with a bunch of synthesizers, and do crazy ambient music.

Any live shows in the near future? All I am do-

If not music, what would you be doing?

ing at the moment is writing, and producing my next album.

Do you or have you ever performed at a club? Yea.. The first thing I ever got going was a weekly at a wine bar. The bar was called Cerilian's. That was when I lived in Florida. I don't much anymore, but in the past I would do acoustic piano covers here, and there. I did classic rock covers. I tell you something that I found really amusing. I would find an open mic, and play piano covers at it for a couple weeks consistently. On

I don't know. The thought makes me uncomfortable.

What lies ahead for Alan Taylor West?

I am going to finish my new album, and rock everyone's socks off. It's going to be a dance record. That will be a slight change for me. It's gritty though. I wanted the guys to like it too. Did I mention that I am going to shoot lasers? Search Alan Taylor West on YOUTUBE or FACEBOOK or just scan the QR CODE above and

He is 25, has a degree in Automation Robotics, is in the process of getting his PhD in Trauma, and owns a Skateshop. His name is Lance Givilancz, the proud new owner of the ALL NEW SWITCHFOOT SKATEBOARDS in McAllen, Tx. Armed with a team of top notch skaters, a bigger, better store (with a ramp in the back) & and a gifted mind, he is fighting the good fight for local skaters. How did you become the owner of Switchfoot Skateboards? Before I moved back down here, I sold my part of a robotics company I started in Austin and used it to by Switchfoot from it's previous owner. I used to go in and buy shoes and skateboards from them. When I MAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.14

bought the shop I realized we could do so much more. We moved down to Maple & 10th St.., got more merch, more shoes, a big sign so people know where we are, and put a ramp in the back that people can skate for free. Do you guys hold tournaments?

Yes Sir, we had a grand opening competition at the shop and gave away cash prizes, boards and stuff away to the crowd. We just had a huge one in Brownsville and we had our team, a corpus team, a Houston team, all these that came down to do a battle of the shops and we took every-

body out. Switchfoot came in 1st & Second. How are things going with the new shop? Great, people are still going to our old location, our exlandlord won't let us take the sign down. You

it! Slap a big "MOVED TO…." sticker on it in the middle of the night. Haha. Where did you grow up? I grew up here in Alamo, then moved to Austin to go to school, got my automation and robotics degree, stayed in Austin for a big. Bought a house and graduated at 19. I moved back down here to be with family. When you're 19, you're like " I can do whatever I want, I'm out of here" but then you realize that family is important so I came down to be with my parents and brother and it all worked out. I'll be heading out to either Washington State or Harvard. Washington has accepted me, and Harvard, We'll see. The shop will stay and I’ll be flying down every couple of weeks. I’m looking to buy a house here. The reason I'm getting my PhD in Trauma is so that I can come back here and work in the Valley

and work the shop. Do you still build crazy robots and stuff? I do! I design PCB boards, all kinds of little knick knacks, remote control little robots. It's a fun hobby, sitting there sodering things. People come over my house and they are like "What is all this stuff?” I think Automation Design will always be my first love. Is there anything you want to tell the local skaterso f the valley? The biggest thing is to support your local shops. Those big corporate entities will never do anything for you. We are the ones that put on the skate competitions, we are the ones calling the city McAllen, Brownsville, Mission, we're the ones who set up those skate parks. I've called them so many times to tell them the lights are off and the skaters can't

MAGAZINE X #61 • DECEMBER 2010 • PG.15

skate in the dark. The corporate stores aren't gonna do that for you. You want better skate facilities? Support your local shops and we support you. And if you get good enough, we give you boards FREE. You don't have to do anything. Free boards, free trucks, free shoes it's just up to you to go out there and do it. If you're good enough, you come to me and you'll get it free! Dude, that would make a killer slogan! How can people get informed on competitions?

They can come by the shop, Facebook and now that we have an outlet, MAGX! Hit us up at Facebook.com/ switchfootskateshop or Myspace.com/switchfootskateshop. We are open Monday - Friday 1pm 8pm, Saturday 11am -7pm and Sunday 1pm-7pm. Thanks for your time Lance, Best of luck on everything! Thank you!
