What does it take to turn pro? To get in the ring and knock someone out cold and turn the heads of some of the boxing worlds biggest stars? Omar “Panterita” Figueroa of Weslaco Texas knows. He just signed to Oscar De La Hoya’s GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS and getting ready for a CAVAZOS BOXING main event fight, Saturday November 12th at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo Texas. Omar is fast & powerful and touts a PRO RECORD of 10 -0, EIGHT of which were knockouts. He is training hard with Boxing Champ Jesse James Leija in San Antonio in preperation for this fight. MAGX caught up with Omar in between vigorous training sessions to find out what makes this NEW GOLDEN BOY tick. I heard you're in San Antonio preparing for the fight on Nov. 12th. Who are you training with and what does the training consist of? I'm training with Jesse James Leija he's a former two-time world champion and the training, I think it's better being over here because this is what it's going to be like when i start fighting bigger fights.God willing, I make it big and everything. It's just a different environment, different people, different

RITA” OA

it more of the physical stuff you're getting ready for? Actually It's funny because I've never done that before because I never knew exactly who my opponent was going to be. If he ends up being my opponent, which hopefully he is.. Every time I've had an opponent, they've all backed out. Usually I go through 5 or 6 opponents. In my last fight, I actually ran through 3 opponents, so usually I just try to better my technique, my conditioning and I just focus on me because I have nothing to base off my opponents. This is actually the first time that I've had time to study him and yeah, we had a day where we were just looking at his videos and going over "you see, when we do this, this is why" so it was pretty cool. I imagine that's what football players do, when they watch tape, you rewind, fast forward, slow motion and “you see this is why we train this way, and when we go to the gym tomorrow this is what we're going to work on.” So it's pretty cool having an actual game plan going into a fight and knowing what you're working towards.

training staff, everything is just a complete 180 degree turn from what i was used to. I'm actually living with him. He had a room left over in his house, and fixed it up, and that's where I'm staying. I'm living with his famil. It's kind of the same as mine, he has two kids, one of them is my age, 19, the other one's 15 so we get along great and the training, I don't really see a difference because it's just like I'm at home. I don't even miss home, it's awesome being here.

So you definitely feel more prepared this time around, huh?

Who will you be facing on November 12th at the State farm Arena?

I've been main event before, but this is my biggest card yet, and I'm headlining it, so I would consider it my first time.

His name is Arturo Quintero, fighting out of Las Vegas. Are you watching videos, is that one of the preparations you go through to see what he does wrong and try to get on that? or is

Yeah the confidence level is just way up there because you actually know what you're going up against, and you see his faults, and what he's strong at, and it's just awesome. This whole training camp has been a whole new experience and it's only for the better. Is this your first headlining fight?

What's your record right now? 10-0 How many knockouts? 8 MAGAZINE X #60 • NOVEMBER 2010 • PG.17

A series of FUN questions we ask to get into the head of our interviewees.

What is your favorite food?

How does you feel when you knock someone out? Only in my first fight, my pro debut, did i know I was going to knock him out. I actually envisioned it before it happened because of his habits, but other than that, either they've told me to take it easy or wait, or it just came by itself, or the referee stopped it. It just feels like another day, that's what we work for, and it feels the same. I get more adrenaline, and a bigger rush walking towards the ring than once I'm inside the ring. How did you get hooked up with Golden Boy Promotions? It's a long story, my dad and I decided to take a random trip to LA to train with Freddy Roach for a week just to meet him and just to see the quality of fighters that there are out there. We had been stuck in the valley all this time and we hadn't really gotten out, my dad wanted me to expose myself and see what's out there. So we took a trip to LA and we met him and we sparred a few times, actually Freddy Roach wasn't even supposed to be there with his gym, and Amir Khan wasn't supposed to be there either, so

all in all we weren't supposed to meet either of them but amir’s opponent got injured so he pulled out of the fight and he just came with Freddy so he could have a mediocre training camp, not all out, just to keep himself in shape in case he got another opponent, so I ended up sparring with both of them. So that really helped my resume because I got to spar with a world champion Amir Khan and he's great. He was a silver medalist at the olympics and I actually looked good against him, and I sparred against a few other pros Freddy had there. The Golden Boy guys were out there scouting so they saw me and they were told about me and we also showed them one of the promotional videos we had and after we got back from Los Angeles, we were home for about a week and Oscar de la Hoya called us and we kept in contact with him. They gave me a test fight in Houston and I did good in that one, so after about a month of negotiating we got the contract.

young adult, he moved over here and didn't know English. There was a lot of discrimination, a lot of guys bullying him and telling him crap and calling him a "wetback." He wasn't a "wetback," but they called him a "wetback" and a "mojado" and made fun of him and picked on him. He didn't want me to go through that so he put me in boxing. It started off for self defense.

How and why did you get into boxing?

Since I turned pro I actually haven't had time for any other hobbies to be honest. I used to draw, sketch a little bit, I used to play baseball, I used to swim... I don't have time for any of that

I'm actually the first in my family to start in boxing and it was because when my dad was a

MAGAZINE X #60 • NOVEMBER 2010 • PG.18

And you just excelled from there? Yeah, my dad saw that I was doing good and had some potential, and that's when De La Joya had just won the gold medal and was going pro so all this hype about boxing was going on so my dad was like you know what let's try it How old were you? 5 or 6 Other than boxing, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

I'm a food person, I love food, any kind of food and to be honest, I don't think I have a favorite, but anything my mom makes. I think my mom's the greatest cook in the world.

Favorite movie? Gladiator

Video game?

FIFA: The Soccer Game

Favorite sports figure?

Oscar de la Joya. he's my role model when it comes to sports, not just because of what he did for boxing, but what he did with boxing. To me, he's the smartest athlete that I've known, that I've seen.

now. It's boxing full time How far do you hope to get in this game, do you have an ultimate goal or are you just seeing where it takes you? My ultimate goal is winning at least 3 world championships If people want to know more about Omar Figueroa Junior, where can they go? I have facebook, just search Omar Figueroa. Anything you want to say before the fight to get the fans prepared? Hopefully they all get to make it out there, there is going to be some great fight. I've seen the

lineup personally because I've fought some of the fighters on the card and I've known them personally, I've seen them fight before. It's going to be one of the best fight cards to be fought in the valley and I'm not just saying that because I'm the main event. When I go to fights, I want to see good fights, I want my money's worth. I'm going to go out and say that this is probably going to be one of the best cards that has ever been in the valley. I also want to thank everybody who's supported me. I didn't make weight last fight and let a lot of people down, but I'm coming back strong this fight, and I'm going to redeem myself, and show everybody that I'm in this for real. I want to apologize for my last fight and thank everybody who stayed behind me.

Hugo & Homar give us the scoop on the THE LEGACY: VALLEY OF TEARS Give us a synopsis on the story, what is The Legacy: Valley of Tears about?

in regards to sacrifice and the reader will get to see that as the series goes along.

Hector: It’s a story about sacrifice and what limits you are willing to go to in order to get what you want. For The Boss, he’s willing to sacrifice his own daughter’s life in order to gain absolute power. In Matador’s case, it’s a matter of how big a sacrifice he needs to make for the sake of his love for Ruby. Most of the other characters have their own crosses to bear

It seems the book has a Quentin Tarantino feel to it, are you fans of his films? Hugo: Thank you! Wow, that is probably the biggest compliment we’ve ever gotten about our book. Yes, I’ve been a diehard Tarantino fan since 1994. I was in college then and I remember skipping class one day to go catch a 3 o’clock feature of

Pulp Fiction; it had only been out a few days. I remember there being maybe a total of 5 or 6 people in that theatre. And I’m not exaggerating when I say this but watching that movie for the first time almost felt like a religious experience. I loved every second of that film and I think it’s absolutely flawless. Needless to say I’ve been eating Big Kahuna burgers and smoking Red Apples ever since. Hector: Most definitely. Pulp Fiction in my mind is probably one of the best movies in the past twenty years. It not only changed the course of movie making in terms of structure, and style, but dialogue as well. The Legacy is definitely influenced by Tarantino’s style of dialogue. Its also a very grown up story, violence and adult themes show up in this tale. Will you be putting up a parental advisor tag on it? Hector: From the moment you open the book and see the blood splattered page, you as a reader know you’re definitely not reading an Archie comic. We make it pretty clear that this story’s for mature readers on the back of the book. Hugo: You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a parental advisor tag on comic books or graphic novels before. But like Hector said, in the back of our book we do have a ‘SUGGESTED FOR MATURE READERS’ tag right on top of the barcode. There is great crime comics out there like Vertigo's 100 Bullets. Is The Legacy following in the footsteps of these crime noir books?

MAGAZINE X #60 • NOVEMBER 2010 • PG.22

Hugo: 100 Bullets is a great book. Other than Sin City, I think 100 Bullets is the perfect crime noir book. Azzarello’s story and Risso’s art is a marriage made in heaven and I hope that someday someone out there thinks the same thing about my art and Hector’s story. But as far as following in the footsteps of these crime books I would say that if it seems like we are, I think it is unintentional but at the same time a great compliment. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be compared to Sin City or 100 Bullets? But to be honest, I think Hector and I are way bigger fans of films than we are of graphic novels. And that’s the way we approached the story since the very beginning. He handed me this great script that read like a movie and I approached it with a director’s point of view. Actually, a few people have told me that it reads more like a love story than a crime story, haha. So if that’s the case, it’s a very twisted and sick love story with crime around it. Who are your influences? Artists and writers? Hector: Heavily influenced by writers like Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Roberto Bolaño, and filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Takashi Miike. Artists that keep pushing that envelope beyond what’s normally expected from a writer or an artist. Hugo: For me, there’s a pretty wide range of influences and not necessarily all of them being comic book artists. Frank Frazetta, Ralph Steadman, Mort Drucker, Bill Watterson, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Mike Mignola, Martin Emond, Frank Miller, Humberto Ra-

mos, Jeff Smith…and maybe a hundred others. I could go on and on. How did you come up with the title The Legacy: Valley of Tears? Hector: 3 A.M. Brainstorming with my iPod, creating outlines, chapters, little tidbits of dialogue that I may be able to sprinkle in here and there. It’s a process. Who is your favorite comic book character as a child? Now? Hector: As a child I would say Jughead. Nowadays, Torch, Sonya, and definitely Ojos from The Legacy. Hugo: Thanks to my dad and his Marvel comic book collection in the 70s and early 80s, my favorite comic book character as a child would definitely have to be Spider-Man. I don’t know if I have a favorite character now, but if I had to pick then there would probably be a tie between Hellboy and Fone Bone. Mike Mignola and Jeff Smith are geniuses, and like I mentioned before they’re both huge influences. Hands down, ‘Bone’ is one of my all time favorite books of all time. Why is there a rubber ducky on the desk next to all the weaponry? Is there a killing style that we don't know of involving rubber ducks? Hugo: Hahaa! That’s hilarious. You know, one thing I really like about working with Hector is that ever since day one he let me run wild with these characters. He gave me brief character descriptions, I created them, he approved them, and from there these characters all of a sudden seemed to have minds of their own and almost became real to us. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that you may need to ask Torch why he has a rubber ducky

next to his weapon paraphernalia, hahaa. I remember the first time Hector saw that scene with the rubber ducky. He laughed and said, “yup, that’s about right.” So, I have no clue why I drew that, but you’re right, maybe there is a killing style that involves rubber ducks. Interesting… The character of "Ojos" is just plain creepy, like a cross between Riff Raff and a serial killer, were you guys watching "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" when you created him?. Whats with the eyes on his necklace or the tattoo? Hector: I told Hugo from the get go that I didn’t want to be the type of writer who told him what the characters should look like, “Birthmark above the lip, hair slicked back, eyes tight and beady as if straining to see in the dark” blah, blah, and all that crap. I said, “Look, read the dialogue and let the characters come to you. What you see, I want to see on the page. All I ask is that you spare the clichéd look, villain clenching cigarette, blonde heroines, etc.” I get the sketches back about two weeks later. Fantastic. It’s as if he scooped these characters out of my brain. So I’m flipping through the pages and for the character of Ojos, there’s two completely different sketches. A main one, which took up most of the page and looked like something out of Street Fighter and another sketch off to the side corner, bald looking freak, tattoo across his face, and to Hugo’s surprise I’m pointing and saying, “That’s it, man. That’s Ojos!” Hugo: I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I’ve never seen “Rocky Horror Picture Show” so it’s a big coincidence if Ojos resembles another character. But like Hector said, I gave him two sketches of that character. One of them was from a quick

MORE MUSIC, ART, SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT @ WWW.MAGXONLINE.COM

description that he gave me which was, “…a thug, with a big scar across his face, and make sure he’s wearing a necklace full of eyeballs.” And the other sketch was a weird character that I had created months before and that had nothing to do with The Legacy. I was in my living room with my sketchbook, and at the time we had this weird tribal mask on the wall for some strange reason, so I sketched it. I thought it looked pretty cool so I created a character and gave him the features of that weird mask and added the mullet look with the long hair in the back and the bald head. The character looked so cool that I planned on using him someday if I ever created my own comic book. A couple of months later I showed it to Hector, not really thinking he would go for it, and he ended

up loving it. As far as the eyeball necklace, he’s just one sick and demented individual. If you cross him, he won’t kill you cause that’s not his style, but he will take one of your eye balls and proudly wear it around his neck. Do you guys have social networking sites? Hugo: We have a Facebook page. It’s not a fan page but a normal friend page. We have all our info there in case anyone’s interested. The URL is: Facebook. com/thelegacyvalleyoftears1 Also, if you’re interested in buying our book, please visit NowhereValley.com and follow the link.
