A new R&B/ Hip-Hop sensation, thats who! “BEAT IT UP” & “SHE’S BAD” are two of his singles that are burning up on the radio. He went from living out of his car to possibly touring with RKELLY. Oh yeah, we interviewed him. Read it. We also SCORED (get it?) an interview with Devard Darling, NFL Wide Receiver for the Kansas City Cheifs & the Baltimore Ravens.

Frank has been the creative genius behind MagX’s stunning graphics since it’s first year and wields his tech powers to unleash masterful layouts and use of white space! He is also the point person for artists who want to be featured within these pages. E-MAIL: frank@magxonline.com

If we lived in a comic book world, J3S would be a super villain! He currently resides in the deep, dark, “danky” laboratories of MagX, quietly plotting to take over the world. Avoid this man on the road... No, seriously.

This mysterious writer came to us through a late night visit to a local restaurant. He has a lot of mutitude of knowledge. Every month he reviews the coolest and most aniticipated video games. Don’t get on this man’s bad side you’ll regret it.

What lies between us? No, not me and you silly… the local Metal Band thats opening the EMMURE show at the incubator on Feb. 11th! We drove them down to the GALLERY BAR downtown (which is a killer and very unique Art & Music Bar which you will learn more about next issue)and took some pics that look almost VICTORIAN… if they weren’t wearing regular street clothes (Hmmm, idea for future photoshoot). We also interviewed them. Want to learn how to be a Bartender? Know someone who does? Bar and Club owners, do your bartenders need training? Call the South Texas School of Bartending. See their ad on page 11. They also offer consulting for your Club or Bar. Not bad for a little South Texas Mag, huh? If we don’t do it, what other magazine in the Valley will? LOL, exactly! Like our motto says… “Real Content, Real Interviews.” We go above ad beyond for you every month to make sure you stay current on what’s going on here and nationwide on the entertainment front. Hello, all I’ve decided to step down for this month and instead of a game review I’m going to give you a movie review of one of my favorite horror classics. Why, horror and not a movie that is based on two star-crossed lovers or a girl who falls hopelessly in love with a sparkling vampire? Or for that matter a

me it’s been done. But, today this review is about one of my favorite flicks, which is a film directed by Peter Jackson and in my opinion a great and a classic horror film. The name of said film is Dead Alive or Braindead in the land of Kiwi’s also known as New Zealand. Now this film is a classic because it is filled not only with comedic zombie action but that this film has several different versions. But first allow me to give you the plot hopefully it’ll get your attention: A young man’s mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to

mushy tale of two people separated between years of time? Well I’m sorry but I don’t think I believe in supporting a month that is the most commercial holiday of the year next to Christmas, Valentine’s Day? Actually it’s because I married a strange woman and in turn she married a strange kinda guy. And, one year several years back actually my wife asked if we could watch a movie and at the time the movie that was playing was a horror flick at Carmike in Edinburg you know the place with the kick ass nachos and the awesome Ice’s and ever since then we celebrate Valentine’s Day with a movie from the horror category, now enough about me, which I can go on for hours, trust

life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. Now the reason of the different version is that since the movies gore and blood was in so much quantity some countries would not show it in theaters that is why the different versions. Places like Australia and the United Kingdom showed the film in its entire 104-minute length. Other countries like Germany censored the film down to 94 minutes so that was a heavy cut from the original 104 minutes of film. Now, in the United States the movie was released under the name of Dead Alive. Now, some people are confused I understand I’ll explain on the difference of the name it’s because there was another movie with the

MAGX • 6

same name (Braindead) and the rights belonged to that other film. So the movie’s title was changed to prevent any lawsuits. Now, it is stated that the R-Rated version of the above mentioned film is only 85 minutes, while the unrated cut is 97 minutes. Now what’s worth noting is that the 97 minute version is Peter Jackson’s preferred version, as he was given the opportunity to “apply some additional spit and polish” to it. I’ve already given you the simple plot of the film. And, that should be enough to get your mouth watering so I recommend you go find it

and watch it. I know you’ll like it as much as I did. Hell you might even love it as much as I did. And, remember this Valentine’s Day don’t forget that once bitten, doesn’t’ mean twice shy it means get ready with the shotgun and the machete cause zombies are coming for dinner and you’re the main course. Till next month this is Darth Chew signing off and look forward for my next game review it’ll be a kick ass fist punching leg kicking…you get the picture.

A killer guitar with a look and construction that has never been seen before. Dusk Tiger represents the state of the art in electric guitars, redefining what the guitar can do with the integration of pioneering technology with the most advanced design in the industry, all in a Limited Edition package with only 1,000 sold worldwide. It recalls the time-honored Les Paul body lines, but presents them in a guitar with a flat top (coupled to a tone-chambered back) made from exotic hardwood covered with golden, amber, and dark chocolate hues, and accented by a unique new pickguard and control layout. Dusk Tiger is set up using advanced Plek technology to insure uniform feel and extreme playability. MAGX • 8

The new iPad. After nearly a decade of rumors and speculation, Apple’s finally unveiled the iPad. It’s a half-inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display, and it’s running a custom 1GHz Apple “A4” chip developed by the P.A. Semi team, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby. It’ll come in 16, 32, and 64GB sizes, and it’s got the expected connectivity: very little. There’s a 30-pin Dock connector, a speaker, a microphone, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi and optional 3G, as well as an accelerometer and a compass. There’s also a keyboard dock, which connects underneath in the portrait orientation, support for up to 1024x768 VGA out and 480p composite out through new dock adapter cables, and a camera attachment kit that lets you import photos from your camera over USB or directly through an SD reader. The device is managed by iTunes, just like the iPhone and can run the apps as well. The 3G version runs on AT&T and comes with new data plans: 250MB for $14.99 and an unlimited plan for $29.99 a month contract-free. Every iPad is unlocked and comes with a GSM “micro-SIM,” so you can use it abroad. More information to come soon.

The 2009-2010 season was a down year for Kansas City Chiefs, especially after losing their number two wide receiver in a preseason contest.

“It all started with Frank and Dennis excelling and it motivated us. We all pushed and motivated each other,” said Darling.

ing the game. My father was big Dolphins fan so we grew up watching Miami. Any chance we’d get we would play football,” said Darling.

Devard Darling was born in Nassau, Bahamas and comes from a family of professional athletes, including his uncle Frank Rutherford who is the first Bahamian track and field athlete to medal in the Olympics and older brother Dennis Darling who is a three-time Olympian himself.

But his bloodlines don’t stop there.

With no organized youth football leagues in the Bahamas, it only took a couple of years before the twin brothers athletic abilities became noticeable. Darling attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Sugarland, Texas where he collected three varsity letters in football, two in track and one in basketball. But it was on

Darling’s and his identical twin brother Devaughn came to the United States in the 7th grade never having played organized football. “There was no youth football league in Nassau, but we always loved play-

the gridiron where he made a name for himself, being touted as the 28th best prospect in Texas by Superprep. “Our freshman and sophomore years are when Devaughn and I really started to excel, but it was in our junior year of high school when we started getting offers from Division I schools. Kentucky was the first to offer us a scholarship, but we chose Florida State,” said Darling. It was their brief stint in Tallahassee, MAGXONLINE.COM

ling moved on to finish his collegiate years at Washington State where he finished his career with 105 receptions for 1,630 yards and 30 trips to the end zone. His astonishing 15.7 yards per catch had experts like Mel Kiper, Jr. predicting him as high as a second round draft pick. “That was a bitter sweet time for me because Devaughn and I had always thought we were going to be drafted together. We both dreamed of playing in the NFL our whole lives, and for him not to be there was a very hard situation. On the other hand, it was exciting because my dream was about to come true,” said Darling. The Cougar’s standout receiver was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round as the 82nd overall pick in 2004, spending four seasons under coach Brian Billick before signing a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. “The average career for players in the NFL is about 3.2 years so I feel very blessed to be one of the few that make it this far. I’ve been in the league for six years now so I count my blessings everyday. It is my des-

Florida that tragedy struck the family when Devaughn collapsed during an offseason workout on February 26, 2001. Devaughn died due to heat exhaustion related complications. “It was an eerie day. Devaughn never quit, and I knew he would never leave me like that. It was one of the hardest times in my life, but believing in the lord helped me get through it,” added Darling. It was after that dreadful day that DarMAGXONLINE.COM

tiny to play in the NFL,” added Darling. Darling spent the 2009-10 season in injured reserved after suffering a knee injury in the preseason, but with the Chiefs making some of the biggest moves in offseason acquiring championship caliber coaches like Romeo Crennel and offensive guru Charlie Weiss, Darling feels optimistic about the years ahead.

“I’m excited about the moves. I think we are headed in the right direction. The coaches are proven winners,” said Darling.

When asked how he feels about the depth at the wide receiver position with pass catchers including Dwayne Bowe, Chris Chambers, Terrance Copper, Quinten Lawrence, Bobby Wade and Chandler Williams, Darling responded:

Darling spends his time in the offseason focusing on his non-profit organization, the As One Foundation,

giving underprivileged youth opportunities through athletic endeavors, educational programming, and spiritual enrichment. It is through his life of opportunity, tragedy, triumph and success that Darling has proved to be a role model on and off the field.

“That’s the NFL for you so you can’t think about that. Just go out and work as hard as you can, count your blessings and the cream will rise to the top.” MAGX • 6

How did you guys come together to form What Lies Between Us. Louie: Basically I was writing since February of ‘09. Marco (bass) came along after I put up the music on myspace. About a week after Marco was Kenny (vocals) and he was alright. (all laughing) Then came Thomasssss. Marco: Thomassss? Louie: Yeah, and he was alright too. (laughing) And then about a week later Kris (guitars) joined the band. Everyone was familiar with what we wanted to do really except for Thomas (haha). Marco: Platinum hits are coming! Everyone really has been able to put their two cents in really. Kris: I really just wanted to start playing shows again, I was just a guitarist looking for a band. So I searched on myspace for these guys, I heard the demos that these guys had up, and I just decided to try out. Louie: MAGX • 16

He showed up and he already new songs! So he was definitely in. Louie: And actually we found both Thomas and Kenny on Craigslist personals. (seriously.) How do you feel to be where you guys are at, being such a young band. Marco: Pretty good. Kenny: It’s amazing. Marco: Yeah, it is amazing. Louie: It’s great, I mean originally we didn’t even plan to play our first show until February of 2010. Now February rolls around and we’re opening for Emmure. Kenny: I remember the first time we met up at Thomas’ house and Louie told us “alright guys we’re not going to start playing shows until 2010, if we’re lucky we’ll hit it around February. And then, by the end of the first month we were like dude, we’re gonna be playing

Houston for Halloween.” Louie: It’s just really cool because every musician that plays music like this knows it takes a lot of time to get tight. So it’s just really cool we were able to play shows as quickly as we could. Thomas, it was your first time in a band how did it feel knowing you had to go out and play in Houston? Marco: He felt great (all laugh) Kenny: C’mon Thomas this question is all yours. Thomas: Yeah, douche bags it is. It was completely a whole new experience. I’ve played small shows and little things like that before but I had never done anything close to what we are doing now. JAVI FROM CITY SIGNS: (KNOCK, KNOCK) Oh awesome I got a bunch

of guys here to help this is too good. So after we all went outside to help Javi push his car across Pecan Boulevard we came back to finish the interview. You guys are opening for Emmure and Otep how does it feel to be a part of these big shows here in the RGV? Marco: Woo! It’s f**king exciting! Louie: You mean crudding exciting. Kenny: Crudding exciting. Thomas: Yeah, crudding exciting. Louie: It feels great, it’s a great opportunity. Kris: It was so unexpected like no one thought this would happen. Kenny: I remember when I got the text, I had just received the text from Frank that said “you guys better start practicing, you’re opening for Emmure” I remember screaming at the top of my lungs then my mom came MAGXONLINE.COM

and was like “What’s wrong?” I’m like the most amazing news we’re playing with Emmure. Marco: MEAT LOAF MOM! MEAT LOAF! Kenny: But yeah it was a trip once I found that out. Thomas: Kris called me up while I was at school and he’s like “DUDE! WE’RE PLAYING FOR EMMURE!” Kris: I swear I was in my car and I saw the text, I was jumping in my car. Louie: I was like Emmure? I wanna open for Creed. (haha) also being able to open for Otep and Bury Your Dead is something every young band hopes to accomplish so it’s awesome and it gives us higher hopes for the future. So it’s an honor but... Kenny: It’s also a lot of pressure. Kris: Yeah, definitely it’s a DGE show so it’s gonna be big. Kenny: It’s hard everyone has high expectations for us. If we mess up in the slightest everyone will go for the kill on this one. Thomas: Everyone’s on our back already as it is. So you guys have a lot of haters? Louie: OH, YEAH. Kenny: For one reason or another there’s just some people that have our numbers or whatever. I’ve gotten texts that we’re cocky, every show we go to we help out we say hello and hang with everyone. We’re just a fun-loving band that loves to write music. Louie: I mean people are always gonna hate, we’re just gonna keep playing we’ve gotten emails, phone calls, texts whatever it’s not going to stop us. Kenny: As much hate as we get here. We get tons of support outside of the valley. There’s people outside of this freaking state that tell us to keep pushing and it’s really encouraging. How do you think you can prove to others that you guys deserve all you’re getting so quickly? Kenny, Kris, Louie, Thomas: It’s all about heart man, right Marco? Marco: I don’t know man. (haha) I really don’t know. Kenny: Marco’s the fun loving guy of the group. Louie: If people are gonna hate us then they’re goin to hate us. we’re going to keep building a fan base for everyone that doesn’t like us stick around we may surprise you. We aren’t goin to stop playing just because some people think we shouldn’t be playing. Even though some people think we are “talentless assholes” (a direct quote from an anonymous voicemail they received). Everyone’s got their MAGX • 18

opinions and if you don’t like us oh well. We won’t stop, we can’t stop, eh eh eh eh. Kenny: My opinion is that if they are hating us this much this early we’re doing something right. I distinctly remember playing Boba Fest and talking to a few people out there, they asked if this had been our first show and I replied no, actually our first show was just two weeks ago in Houston. They’re reaction was “How did you get to play in Houston, in disgust.” Marco: I’m pretty sure we have more fans in Houston than here. WLBU: definitely. Tell me about the record you have coming out. Louie: It should be out sometime around summer time. We only have a few more songs left to write on it. Those of you who have seen us live it will be those songs we’re performing plus a few surprises here and there. It’s going to be exciting. Kris: Right now, Louie and I are in the process of finishing up the newer tracks. Where do you hope to get at the end of this year? Louie: At the beginning of this year we all sat down and had a conversation about the direction we wanted to go. Thomas: This was specifically at “The V” in San Benito it was our very first show of 2010. We had a group discussion right before we went on stage and we decided to set a goal for ourselves. We feel that 2010 is our year we’re gonna hit it hard this year and do our best to possibly get signed. Kenny: To prove that during that set I pushed myself so hard that blew out my back. (haha) I shouldn’t have jumped off that stage. Louie: If anything at the end of this year we hope to have a bigger fan base and that we’re reaching out to a lot more people. To be able to be signed and touring on an actual album by the end of this year would be great but right now I feel we’re just building to that. But we won’t settle for anything. We’re gonna keep striving for something bigger. So you guys are planning a tour in the summer? Louie: Well, right now we’re working on it. It’s definitely in the process. We’re thinking either a Summer or a Winter tour.

Which has been your favorite show so far? Louie: Well by far one of them has to be when we played with Dead Sea Choir at Simon Sez. They were just awesome it was so out of left field most of us didn’t know what those guys sounded like and we get there and they’re all freaking Mozart’s at their instruments. Every single member was a part of a beautiful 5 part harmony that sounded amazing. Then on top of all that we were the only metalcore band that night playing to a straight up Indie crowd. Kris: What made us feel great was that the lead vocalist went up to us at the end of the show and told us how much he enjoyed our set. “You made my teeth hurt” he said. We even traded demos. Kenny: He also said “you know I don’t feel bad missing many of the bands on our tours but I was glad I got to see yours.” WLBU: Many thanks to Goodbar and Dead Sea Choir for that show. Any final words? Kenny: I LOVE YOU MOM! Marco: Thanks to Don’t Get Emo for getting us on that Emmure show and Dead-

gift for the Otep show, and hopefully they enjoy us and get us for many more events. Louie: To everyone that doesn’t like us right now we’re not cocky at all so if you don’t like us really that’s you alls fault. Any where that we get is because we’ve earned it. We aren’t rich by any means. We aren’t a “pretty band”. We’re nothing like that we’re just guys that love metal. Thomas: We’ve made so many sacrifices socially and financially just to make this our main focus. Kenny: We’re all doing this out of our own pockets really. The only help we get is from Thomas’ dad is gracious enough... THOMAS: HEY HOLD ON! I gotta say this real quick, thank you very much to my dad who has been very supportive driving to Houston and to here and there just always being there. Kenny: Really he’s a hero behind the scenes because he’s been there always supporting us at almost every show. He’s more than happy to drive us, he’s the one that psyches us out before our shows. Kris: This guy likes our music so much he washes his car listening to it. (ALL LAUGH) Thomas: Drive by any weekend in the afternoon and you’ll see him jamming to What Lies Between Us and washing his car.

For the people that are barely getting to know who you are describe yourself and style. I’m 90’s R&B! (haha) No but seriously definitely 90’s style R&B with a few extras thrown in. I’m from the southwest side of Houston, TX. I come from a big family, of which I’m the oldest of 7. Music has always been a passion throughout my family. We are all music and athletes. I was 13 years old when I was in the closet kidding around with my cousin, he’s the “star” in the family. I was essentially just trying to mock him while he was singing to some girl on the phone. He stopped to look at me and said “I know you’re joking around but you actually sound pretty good. From then music became my escape in life. I wanted to go to the nba but it really wasn’t possible. I love music so much it’s fun and comes easy to me. I heard you overcame being homeless can you tell us a bit about that. I was really trying to become a man. I took a step on my own just trying to live my own life. I made money the wrong way and because I lived that lifestyle I knew that I was coming to a dead end. I didn’t want to live with mom and didn’t really want to impose on friends. So my thoughts were I have a truck and I’m gonna have to figure it out. I was out for 6 weeks trying to find my way. I would stay with friends occasionally but I really wanted to figure it out by myself. So essentially it was all by choice. I wanted to know how can I become a

MAGX • 20

strong man and stand on my own. I was out all day and night selling mixtapes I pressed. I ended up making about $150 in 12 hours. Eventually with the money I was making with my mixes some friends and I decided to pitch in and ended up getting a pretty nice town house. How satisfying was it getting signed to Capitol records? It was VERY satisfying. But really it’s just a part of a new journey. There are so many artists that get signed and never ever come out with an album or even try to be the best they can. I try not to bask in it too much because it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t sell records. It’s like being hired a Wal-Mart, it’s all the same you still have to perform to get awarded. What can you tell us about your new singles “Beat it Up” and “She’s Bad”? She’s Bad was produced by Bryan Michael Cox he let me use the studio. I knew he worked with Young Jeezey and based on that I knew it would do well. Bun-B (part of legendary rap group UGK) was like if you need anything let me know. I responded with I’d like you to help if you can, but I really don’t have the money. He said you don’t even need it just send me the track. I sent it and he had it done in a week. It was a really big gesture from him. Beat it Up came up we were just here talking about sexual experience I told him I had sex while driving once and I dubbed that the “suicide position.” One of my

buddies told me he was having sex in the club once and no one realized it. They did it for the thrill. Every man in the world would like to do that but you really just can’t. So we called that one the VIP position. When can people expect the record? Well my singles (She’s Bad and Beat it Up) are on iTunes right now. The album’s called Going Hard it will be in stores March 23rd. Be sure to check it out please, I’m grateful for everything that has got me to where I am. What are your plans as far as touring goes? None thus far, I’m still working it all out. I may get on an upcoming R-Kelly tour. That would be insane man, since I look up to him. Your style seems to really revolve around sexiness what type of woman would you write a song about? A strong minded woman. Someone who is already solid on her views, open but with a sense of class. She can be beautiful and sexy but if she isn’t smart or strong it won’t really manifest into anything. At times I’m a pushover so I need a woman who can put me in my place sometimes. Do you prefer blondes or brunettes? I think blondes are much more Sexual, fun, and wild, but a brunette is much more the type I’d marry.
