Kate has had her fair share of experimenting in different disciplines but a creative future seemed set in stone from an early age. Her indefatigable artistic talent continued to surface and when she returned to New Zealand after years travelling, she bought her first computer. Producing her own wedding invitation led to the opening of her business, Ruby & Willow Design Studio. Building on the immense success of her Magnolia Rouge blog, Kate as the editor in chief of {MAG}rouge is the key to the uncompromising aesthetic and inspiration of the magazine.
After gaining qualifications in History Jasmine took up an IT career, though she never forgot her youthful dreams of winning amateur photo competitions. Finally she understood her true calling: photography and art. Having always had a combined passion for photography with her dear friend Hannah, from their days in the art room at high school, they founded Sutherland Kovach Studio, and the rest is history! Their mission is to create a beautiful sweet world through their images. Jasmine is also crazy about her small daughter and the domestic arts.

Hannah’s interest in photography dates back to her childhood when at an early age she became obsessed with discovering how the 3D world could be transferred to paper through a magic box. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam she worked in the BBC’s Picture Publicity Dept and on the set of Harry Potter 6 in the photography department. In 2008 she returned home and joined forces with one of her oldest, dearest and most visionary friends Jasmine, in the successful enterprise of Sutherland Kovach Studio.
Judit started her adult life as an economist and marketer in her home country of Hungary. After marrying and having two beautiful girls, she travelled the world, finally stopping at the farthest corner of it in a place called New Zealand. It was here where she finally realized that her best recipe for success would be her culinary skills, sweet tooth, art and craft and marketing talent, and went on to form her business, Artisan Cakes. She still delights clients worldwide, this time not with her incisive ad campaigns but delicious treats from her cake kitchen.

1. Gather your materials together. 2. On a piece of paper or card, draw a triangle measuring 16cm x 24cm and cut it out. 3. Place it on your map and cut out the bunting triangles using your ruler and rotary cutter. 4. Put your bias binding or ribbon under the presser foot of your sewing machine and sew a couple of inches. If you have decided to use readymade bias binding, it will be folded for you. If you are using grosgrain ribbon, you will need to fold as you go. 5. Tuck your bunting flags into the fold and sew through the layers, leaving a half inch gap between flags. 6. Trim threads and hang your bunting!

Kate and Ranko met through mutual friends - Ranko had seen Kate’s picture and thought she was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Kate, on the other hand, had no time at all for Ranko, dismissing him as arrogant and rude! Fortunately, this did not last and they went on to fall in love and get married at Waiheke Island’s spectacular Mudbrick Vineyard. Kate and Ranko chose Mudbrick because it offered everything they were looking for: good food, good wine, and good service, as well as being a visually stunning location. Ranko describes their wedding style as ‘rustic romance’, which Kate agrees with as many of their details harked back to days gone by - the lace of Kate’s dress, Ranko’s bow tie, and the twine that they tied to the church pews.

ate spent a lot of time on blogs picking out key design aspects that she liked, and threw in a few of her own ideas. Her advice to other couples is to establish what you like and don’t like before you start your planning, and keep your Googling to a minimum to avoid becoming overwhelmed! Ranko’s advice is to put one person in charge, preferably one’s future wife! Both agree that saying their vows were their favourite part of the day, and that the day itself was made special by the love of their friends and family. “We both agree the most emotional moment of the day was during the reception. Kate’s uncle Tony was the MC and, unbeknownst to us, he prepared his speech to the guests on how the two of us met not in words, but by playing songs. Each song was well thought out, and perfectly fit the emotion Tony was trying to convey to the guests. It was the perfect way to lighten the mood, and by the end of the speech, everyone was on their feet dancing. A true 21st century YouTube moment!“
Kate and Ranko, you really are people who make me fall in love with my job over and over again, the love between you is so genuine and full hearted. Martinborough is a gorgeous little town in the Wairarapa - a famous winegrowing region of New Zealand, located not far from the capital city of Wellington. Chris and Melody love the area and chose the beautiful boutique Tirohana Estate for their spring wedding. The couple met at an accounting firm, where both were on the graduate program, Melody in her first year and Chris in his second. On a night out to induct the new grads, Melody and Chris spotted each other straight away. Fast forward six years, and they were en route home after six years spent living in London and travelling the world, when Chris proposed in Argentina. There was another surprise to come when Chris revealed he had put three rings on hold at De Beers in Las Vegas, where they were heading in a week’s time, for Melody to choose from.

T
he team at {MAG}rouge just loves a good tea party! It’s a lovely thing to dress up and take time out from the rush of everyday life; to sit down with friends and family with a cuppa. Especially if the tea is served in a delicate cup and is accompanied by a selection of irresistible savory and sweet treats. It does make one wish to return to those times when these delectable affairs were everyday rituals! The list of themes and colour options is extensive. Enchanted by the tea culture of Asia, the {MAG}rouge girls concocted a fusion tea party which would incorporate the best of many worlds, with fuchsia as our accent colour. Hand carved, dark wood furniture and neutral coloured tetures and accessories provided the perfect base. Intricately decorated brass and gold vases and pots gave the finishing touches for a visual trip to the Orient. Judit, our resident entertaining expert, prepared a delicious menu of savoury and sweet treats from the four corners of the world, while her special selection of tea from the best growing areas of China and India impressed our guests in both look and taste!

Jenny’s favourite road trip | Iceland, Graziano’s favourite road trip | California
Jenny & Graziano are illustrators and met in an animation studio in Rome, where they live. After the proposal, they set their wedding date for a year away and spent the time researching and studying wedding blogs. It is Italian tradition to get married in the bride’s hometown, which for Jenny is Feltre, a village in the Veneto region. Veneto is rich in Renaissance and Palladian villas and when Jenny & Graziano found Villa Zasso they knew it was the perfect place for their wedding reception.
Jenny’s Valentino dress set the scene for their colours - as it had embroidered white flowers and black ribbon around the waist, they chose white and black for their table numbers, their guest favours, table decorations, and confetti cones. The couple felt the details were an important part and really enjoyed making them. Overall, it was exactly the wedding they wanted. They found that, even if there wasn’t time to talk to everyone as much as they would have liked, people had a great time, and that made Jenny & Graziano very happy.

We first met Jenny & Graziano in Rome for their engagement shoot and discovered they had the coolest apartment which we also photographed. Both being illustrators they had a collection of great design pieces scattered throughout their home, some of which they designed themselves. So naturally, their wedding was dead cool. Include some lush greenery in shades of sage green, and you have the perfect accompaniment for your walk down the aisle. Flats are essential on the beach, like a lovely silvery sandal. This combination of gold, ivory and buttery yellow would light up a ballroom. Add length and glamour to this dress with a matching petticoat and pair it with some beautiful gold shoes, just right for tripping the light fantastic. Marfa is a small mountain town in the far west of Texas that began as a railroad water stop in the 19th century. Today it is the home of the Chinati and Judd Fountains, established to preserve the work of the minimalist artist Donald Judd, who moved to Marfa in the 60s. This beautiful place was the location for Jessica and Gray’s wedding. Marfa has two fabulous accommodation spots - the Thunderbird Hotel and El Cosmico, both of which feature in the pictures. El Cosmico offers a range of options, including yurts, teepees and a collection of renovated vintage trailers.
Jessica & Gray’s ceremony was held at Mission Mary in Calera, Texas. Mission Mary was built in 1902 and abandoned in the 1940s. The La Calera Foundation restored the mission in 2003 to the incredible building you see in these pictures.

Sometimes an idea for a shoot can spring from the most unexpected sources. From a length of fabric, to some vibrant glassware or a brightly coloured piece of fruit. Kate spotted these mangosteens in a grocery store and the rest followed quickly after! Claret and apricot work well together as they are both warm colours, with a yellow tone. Create your own colour story for your wedding or event by choosing two complementary colours with the same tone and sourcing elements in those colours. Fabric, fruit, baked goods, your dress and shoes, jewellery, crockery - the possibilities are endless! Have fun gathering props to experiment with and you’ll soon find your own colour story starting to evolve.

“We really wanted to capture the beauty of the location, so most things were very natural, like flowers from the farmers market, our reception dinner of fresh salmon and local produce and a pre-wedding whale watching trip for everyone.�
Brynne and Ryan met one month into their respective university careers at a sports team mixer. Eight years after that, they tied the knot on Orcas Island in the Pacific Norhtwest of the United States. Brynne had taken a vacation to Orcas Island a few years earlier and had not been able to get the beautiful location out of her head, so it was an easy choice as a wedding destination! Both were excited for their friends and family to also experience the island’s beauty.
Brynne and Ryan kept the details light as they wanted the focus to be on the surroundings. They kept the guest list small and loved that they were able to spend time with each person who had come to support them. Brynne recommends deciding what to spend time and money on, and sticking to this plan. By forgoing some traditional must-haves, like a DJ or a wedding party, the couple were able to direct their funds towards the things that meant a lot to them - a personal ceremony in a breathtaking setting, and a great photographer.

What’s your dream road trip?
Antiquing in Maine durin g late September or early October. The lea ves have turned the craziest, most magical colors, the air is crisp but not cold, you can buy warm apple cider donuts on the side of the road. It’s my version of heaven.
What would be on the stereo?
Probably Colbie Caillat or Elizabeth & The Catapult. With a Glee sou ndtrack or two thrown in for good measu re.
Any advice you would give to a bride having a destination wedding?
Hire a wedding planner who knows the area and has solid experience planning destination weddings. Issues like what you can and can’t bring through cus toms, currency exc hanges, language ba rriers all come into play when planning a de stination wedding and having someone who knows the drill will take loads of stress off yo ur shoulders and allow you to enjoy the pro cess that much more. Even if you’re planni ng a stateside fete, a great planner wil l know how to put your dollars to the best po ssible use.

Ask your caterer what they can do to further enhance the presentation of your menu choices. Use props to compliment the style of food you’re presenting. Bring in fresh flowers and herbs to surround the senses with tastes and flavour

When putting this shoot together, Sofia imagined a group of friends gathering for a bridal shower, and wanted to create an occasion that was more winter oriented. Paper flowers are used to make a statement and the aesthetic is simple & clean. The colours are those that we normally associate with tea - natural soft hues, light browns, beiges. Marmalade orange adds a warm accent and completes the look.

Flower Report Leading florist, Annie Oxborough, who created this amazing bouquet, says “wedding flowers are back in vogue, and we’re seeing more adventure than ever before with a nod to yesteryear. High tea on the lawn is undergoing a major facelift and the results are reflecting a romantic, whimsical bouquet almost handpicked from Granny’s garden.”

As Kerry stood with her dad, before walking down the aisle, she could see the ceremony and reception areas. In her own words, “[it] was the only few minutes of the entire day that I really got to see how everything I had envisioned, while planning our wedding, had turned out. I remember turning to my dad and telling him everything was exactly what I had wanted. It really could not have been more perfect! �
Kerry & Joe both graduated from the same college but somehow never met until a few years later when they both worked for the same software company. They were married at Holland Ranch in San Luis Obispo, California. They chose Holland Ranch as they wanted a venue that reflected their relaxed, laid back personalities, but could be dressed up a little with their colour choices. They also loved the idea of a ranch, as they are very keen on anything country! As soon as they saw the ceremony site at Holland Ranch, they were sold. Both Kerry & Joe spent time crafting the details for their wedding - together they made straws for every water cup on the tables, Mr. and Mrs. banners and a Thank You banner. They also made all the signs that were placed round the venue, and the table name and guest place cards. Finally, Kerry and a friend made 200 cake pops for the guest favours!
