created here, both to local citizens and the national community that descends on the festival.

The Magnetic North Theatre Festival is about community. This is only natural for a festival that moves from one city to another, bringing theatre to every corner of this sprawling nation. It’s amazing how a single idea – community – can encapsulate every activity over eleven straight days. When Kitchener-Waterloo extended its invitation to host Magnetic North in 2010, it was the community's vision of the arts as an economic engine for the entire region which won us over. Few municipalities take the challenge of manifesting a creative city so seriously, and are so intent on making the arts central to their economic and spiritual growth. As is always the case when we move to a new city, we owe a debt of thanks to our new venue partners: the Button Factory, Centre In The Square, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, The Museum, Registry Theatre, University of Waterloo, and The Waterloo Entertainment Centre. To those who have worked tirelessly to make it all happen: our national Board of Directors and National Resource Council, and on the ground, the KitchenerWaterloo Advisory Committee and numerous partners whose hard work, advice and guidance have been invaluable. In pulling together a suite of compelling and exciting theatrical presentations that the entire nation needs to see, we are thrilled that many of the works within the Magnetic North Theatre Festival speak of, or to, a sense of community.

Offerings such as The Greatest Cities In The World, Another Home Invasion and Elephant Wake deal directly with the challenges of creating the places in which we live; Homage and The Last 15 Seconds show us how art can bring communities together and pull them apart again; Norman: A Tribute to Norman McLaren and Dedicated to the Revolutions reframe our thinking about art and technology; Mump & Smoot Cracked creates a peculiar universe called Ummo; and a quartet of works give area youth a special place via Tough!, Monster Makers, Uth Ink and the Children’s Choice Awards. Local arts in the Waterloo Region are currently undergoing a renaissance and they have a special place in our festival. Asphalt Jungle Shorts VI by Flush Ink Productions, Pat the Dog’s reading series piece/meal, and Lost & Found Theatre's work with Uth Ink will showcase the fine work that is

New this year, we are joined by international guests who, with home sweet home and the SPILL Feasts, bring us new ways to look at community. The Canadian Actors’ Equity Association gathers together a community of artists for the Masterclass for Directors. As in previous years, we welcome our professional community during the Industry Series and invite students from across the country to join our community at Compass Points. We’ve worked hard with our local advisories to ensure the festival leaves behind a legacy wherever we go. We are proud to help expand the creative economy; in each host city the festival hires locally, giving the city’s arts workers the opportunity to improve their skills by working in a national context. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Volunteer Action Centre on our Volunteer Gateway project, ensuring that local volunteers, who discover a love for arts volunteering through our one-time event, have the opportunity to remain engaged with local arts groups. When we both joined this organization, we were asked what Magnetic North meant to us. We both agreed that it meant community. We are delighted to say that three years later, it still means community. Thank you, Kitchener-Waterloo for inviting us into yours. KEN AND ANN

CO-PRESENTER PETER HINTON ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, ENGLISH THEATRE, NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE.

The National Arts Centre English Theatre is proud to partner in presenting the eighth annual Magnetic North Theatre Festival. At any festival, both celebration and a sense of ritual or holiday is a big part of its appeal. From its earliest beginnings in ancient Greece, western theatre was presented in the context of a festival. The terms “tragedy” and “comedy” are derived from what the plays presented in these ancient festivals meant. So, while we may no longer worship the God of Wine, (although if you go to the Festival Bar, you might be reviving that ancient rite) certainly, there will be harrowing modern dramas that evoke the mournful “goat song” of an ancient tragedy, and contemporary comedies that truly “sing of a village revel”. It is a profound quality of human experience that we are compelled to share our stories to better understand the world and mysteries around us, and it is in the ancient spirit of the theatre festival that I welcome you to embrace the sense of ritual and revelry that comes with Magnetic North. From the variety of the plays presented, to the events which encourage dialogue between artists and audiences, one of the factors that keeps this festival tremendously exciting is the fact that it moves around the country and showcases a different Canadian city each year. Every past festival (including those in Edmonton, St. John’s, Vancouver, and the in-between Ottawa years) has been as unique as the city hosting the plays, the artists and events. We are thrilled to have this festival in Kitchener-Waterloo; we look forward to rightfully placing this city in the national context of Magnetic North; and we encourage visitors to check out the city and all it has to offer. So welcome to the festival and let the rites begin.

MUMP & SMOOT CRACKED Created by Michael Kennard and John Turner Directed by Karen Hines

MUMP & SMOOT (EDMONTON, AB /MANITOULIN ISLAND, ON)

"Mump & Smoot are the latest wrinkle on the existential fall-guy, the Everymen buddy-buddies alone at the edge of the world."

These are not the clowns from your seventh birthday party. Eight years ago, the legendary clowns of horror Mump & Smoot took a break at the peak of their prowess, after years of dismembering one another in fits of fury, despoiling their environment in fits of anarchy, and prancing through terror with audiences across the continent.

NEW YORK NEWSDAY

Magnetic North is pleased to welcome this award winning comedy duo who live in a parallel universe called Ummo, worship their god Ummo, and speak their own brand of gibberish – Ummonian. In Mump & Smoot Cracked we find the intrepid duo challenging Ummo, who seemingly is bent on the annihilation of their friendship and ultimately their very existence.

ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?

Directed by the award-winning Karen Hines, with music by the award-winning Greg Morrison.

Based on the true story of Haydn Llewellyn Davies.

DISCOVER KITCHENERWATERLOO'S PUBLIC ART ON GUIDED WALKING TOURS.

Who owns public art? The artist who built it? The town that paid for it? Or is all art a public trust, owned by no one and everyone at the same time? An advertising executive takes a risk, leaves his job and tries his hand at art. His first commission: a public sculpture for a town's central square, a monumental installation inspired by Stonehenge and built out of red Canadian cedar. Thirty years later, he has become one of the country’s most successful public sculptors and his work is featured in textbooks on Canadian art. Yet, as his health fails and he is left with an uncertain prognosis, the town decides to demolish his seminal work.

SEE PAGE 32

In 2005 a series of coordinated attacks struck three hotels in Amman, Jordan. Among the casualties were Syrian-American filmmaker Moustapha Akkad and his daughter Rima, attending a wedding. Producer of thirteen Hallowe'en movies, Akkad re-defined gratuitous onscreen violence, but used the profits to make films like Lion of the Desert in an attempt to bridge the gap between the Islamic world and Western popular culture. Created by the company, using powerful imagery and a visceral physicality, The Last 15 Seconds explores the idea of terrorism through an imagined dialogue that explodes between Akkad and Rawad Jassem Mohammad Abed, the suicide bomber in question, in the last 15 seconds of their lives.

ONE OF THE GREATEST CITIES

Smaller than the originals … but great cities nonetheless.

WITH THEATRE REPLACEMENT AT home sweet home.

For their latest theatrical investigation Theatre Replacement traveled to London, Paris, Rome, and Moscow — all found in the state of Tennessee. These small American towns serve as the backdrop for a very complex encounter: Rome is little more than a few houses on the road between Lebanon and Carthage. Moscow's claim to fame is that it held an alternate Olympics to those hosted in the Soviet Union in 1980. London hasn't been called London since the Civil War when it was a secret gathering place for African-American soldiers.

SEE PAGE 32

Using collected interviews, photos, video and audio documentation, Theatre Replacement stages a cacophonous smash-up of these encounters — a theatricalized assemblage of voices, movement and media to construct an oddly familiar world.

Conscious that she has waited too long, Jean hides her husband’s growing dementia from the selection board, while getting little support from her grown children. MONSTER MAKERS A LABORATORY EXPERIMENT OF A WORK-IN-PROGRESS Conception and social coordination by Darren O'Donnell Produced by Natalie De Vito MAMMALIAN DIVING REFLEX (TORONTO, ON)

There’s control, and then there’s outta control. Monster Makers is a wildly interactive adventure for children and a spectacular shadow-show for adults. The children take over Igor's laboratory as assistants, bring his recently acquired monster to life and take the creature on the road to face the menacing challenges of the big and dangerous city. Children lead, adults follow: as it should be. Warning: Monster Makers separates the children and adults into two audiences, includes a field trip to the streets of Kitchener- Waterloo, features the promise of infinite candy and makes repeated references to poop.

Are we too polite? Are we afraid to tell it like it is? Have the plethora of award shows on television watered down the idea of merit? Here come the Children’s Choice Awards to set the record straight and tell it like it is. Magnetic North and Mammalian Diving Reflex, together with The Museum and Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, get out the red carpet and make a jury of children the arbiters of culture. Watch for them at selected performances throughout the festival. Following the 10-day schedule of festival events our junior judges will unveil their unfiltered categories of acknowledgement and present their own handmade chocolate-covered trophy awards. MAGNETIC ENCOUNTERS Magnetic Encounters are about proximity – getting the audience as close to the art as possible. We invite you to a variety of events, talks, installations, interventions and performances, all linked to the KRIS NELSON ENCOUNTERS CURATOR mainstage works and the people behind them. Each Encounter is made-to-measure for Kitchener-Waterloo, and either matched to a mainstage show or to the festival itself. The Encounters will introduce you to exciting artists, tease out and re-examine the themes and ideas at play in the festival and offer new meeting points. Extra special this year, Magnetic North launches a new set of possibilities for our audience: 2010 is the first time we will present the work of international artists. We’re thrilled to bring to Kitchener-Waterloo two works from the United Kingdom that are, at their heart, about creating and investing in a community, and that will build new connections between UK and Canadian artists and audiences. London’s Subject to_change invites festival-goers to build and tend their own city with their installation home sweet home, while SPILL Feasts' director Robert Pacitti of London’s Pacitti Company animates Feasts where everyone – audience and artists alike – talk about the shows, play with ideas and get to know one another over food, wine and conversation. Please join us for what are sure to be exciting, entertaining and provocative Encounters!

INDUSTRY SERIES

A PROFESSIONAL SYMPOSIUM DEDICATED TO BUILDING NETWORKS AND SHARING THE WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AMONGST FESTIVAL DELEGATES.

While performers train throughout their careers, those of us on the other side of the proverbial curtain seem less inclined to incorporate schooling into our professional lives. The wealth of knowledge available to us keeps expanding but there's never enough time to absorb it all, and still stay on top of emails and grant applications, deadlines and meetings, tour follow-up and, oh yes, that elusive work/life balance.

Inspired by the spirit of investigation and higher education exemplified in Kitchener-Waterloo by the high standards of its universities and institutions devoted to pure learning, this year’s Industry Series will focus on renewal. We'll look at ways to keep abreast of innovations, to strengthen and deepen our own particular expertise, delving into intellectual concepts as well as sharing practical skills.

NAOMI CAMPBELL

INDUSTRY SERIES PRODUCER/ TOURING LIAISON

Setting the tone is keynote speaker Robert Pacitti of London’s SPILL Festival, whose strong commitment to research and development informs his work as an artist, an activist and a curator. Sessions, both practical and provocative, will challenge assumptions and answer gnawing questions, and of course the ever popular pitches return. ROBERT PACITTI

Since 2004 Magnetic North’s Industry Series has had a significant impact on the community, the form, and the way we work together. Here, we forge relationships, initiate collaborations and exchange ideas. Please join us in KitchenerWaterloo this June: debate, argument, edification and inspiration will be the order of the day as we share ways to stay excited, relevant and on top of our game.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

During the Industry Series CPPAMO (Cultural Pluralism in Performing Arts Movement Ontario) will convene its second Town Hall on Pluralism in the Performing Arts in cooperation with the Coalition of Performing Artists (COPA), featuring speakers, performances and workshops in collaboration with Magnetic North. PLEASE SAVE THE DATES AND WATCH THE WEBSITE FOR DETAILS AND THE TOURING WORKSHOP APPLICATION FORM.

TOURING WORKSHOP WITH JUDY HARQUAIL AND LENDRE KEARNS JUNE 11 – 13 SPONSORED BY THE CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS AUDIENCE AND MARKET DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

Explore the ins and outs of touring in Canada and abroad with Judy Harquail and Lendre Kearns, two of our very best Arts Marketing professionals, with over 50 years in the touring business between them. This hands-on workshop will provide nuts and bolts for newcomers and veterans alike, as there will be dedicated sessions for both levels of experience.
