President Greg is off shore so as President Elect I took on the actual role for our meeting this week. In addition, our usual time and venue had changed to an evening meeting at Café Va Bene, to which we could invite partners and friends. Our special guest was Wally Gradara who is the National Trading Manager for Shaw Family, Ballast Stone, Winery. Wally kindly supplied wines for pre-dinner tasting featuring a pinot noir/chardonnay upon arrival, Cordelia 2012 Sauvignon Blanc and Ballast Stone Chardonnay for entrée with Ballast Stone Cabernet Sauvignon and Ballast Stone Windjammer with our main. Great wines, enjoyed by all. After dinner Wally gave us a description of the wines and details and history of the Company and his role. He also spoke passionately of the impact that the domination of the large liquor chains is having on both the smaller wineries that struggle to have their wines represented and the pressure on smaller outlets that are in danger of closing if they cannot compete, even though their prices can be significantly cheaper. This will be exacerbated if supermarkets are allowed to sell liquor along with groceries and fruit and veg. Quite a lot of questions and discussion flowed from this issue. Darrell Wise from Marion Rotary Club was another dinner guest. He spoke about the upcoming District 9520 Conference 25 – 28 April, reminding us that DG Roy Armstrong wants us to have fun. To facilitate the fun there is Karaoke on Friday night as well as the Convention dinner on Saturday night. An impressive list of guest speakers has been compiled to inspire and motivate us. A door prize of a bottle of Ballast Stone Windjammer Shiraz was won by our Shirley Roberts. Kevin and Shirley are off to Port Lincoln for a few weeks to facilitate the bush fire fence rebuilding project and we wish them well with their endeavors. President Greg will be back on board for the next meeting, relaxed and tanned from his break. A big thank you to everyone for your support and assistance with the smooth running of the meeting. My “good friend’’ Carol, for asking me to be the Sergeant, because I was the only unaccompanied person there and everyone else had partners (Editor’s Note: start humming “Only the Lonely” now). Carol, for getting the guest speakers name wrong. Was that Darryl? Carol, for her exploding pen and then using a stolen Ikea pencil to finish writing her notes. Carol, for enlisting the help of her son Ashley to Google “Thought for the Day”. Carol, for volunteering Mina at the conference for her excellent body work (Pilates I think). Julie and Ian, for pretending they know about boats by going to the Goolwa Wooden Boat Festival. Julie, for recruiting Ian as a “Soprano” for Sing Australia and trying to reduce his time spent on Magill Sunrise Rotary projects. Ian and Julie, for frolicking in Bundaleer Forest and trying to pretend they are actually going there to sing. Chris, Susan and Pauline for knowing everything about the Tanunda Conference. Naturally that’s what they were discussing when Darryl was telling everyone else about it. Chris, who doesn’t like white table cloths so decided to colour his with pizza topping. Mari, for retiring and looking far too happy for someone who will be spending more time with Mark. Mark T, who needs to order better quality wine for Mari to reduce her sulphur intake. Wally, for providing such lovely wines that I couldn’t resist and then making me stop because I had to drive home. All those who enjoyed the wine……….thank you for financing re stocking of my wine rack.
