...& Wing: Bird Field Trips
EARL M. HARDY BOX CANYON SPRINGS PRESERVE: FRIDAY AFTERNOON 1-4P
Moderate/Strenuous: descending into canyon on uneven terrain – 4 mile round trip. A beautiful waterfall, golden eagles and a spectacular vista will greet you. After descending into the canyon we will take time to explore the 11th largest spring in the country with its beautiful spring-fed waters that appear blue and turquoise in the sun. Along the way, cliffs make the canyon an attractive perch for eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. Hosted by Sarah Harris & Bill Chisholm.
BIRD WATCHING AT THE HAGERMAN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: FRI AFT 1-4
Easy: The Hagerman Wildlife Management Area is the home to most of the Pacific Flyway birds throughout the year. Focused on the northern ponds of the Hagerman Wildlife Management Area, a wide variety of Pacific Flyway birds will be observed. Hosted by Ann Parry
THOUSAND SPRINGS: FRIDAY AFTERNOON 1-4
RITTER ISLAND: SATURDAY MORNING 9-12P
Easy: This tour is designed for people who want to look a little longer at a particular bird, rather than racing off to add another bird to this list. The morning trip will explore Ritter Island and the afternoon trip will explore the trails on the mainland portion of Thousand Springs Park adjacent to Ritter Island. This trip will involve some scrambling over uneven terrain which could be, depending upon the weather, a little wet or muddy. Hosted by Jeff Ruprecht.
SUNRISE BIRDING: OWSLEY BRIDGE & TRAIL: SATURDAY MORNING 5:30A
Moderate: Explore sunrise birding! An excellent opportunity to watch, listen and learn about our migrant species. This early morning walk is an excellent introduction to the birds of the region and perfect for practicing birding by ear. Not only are birds actively singing near sunrise, but they often do so from exposed, visible perches, offering exceptional views and photography opportunities in the exceptional morning light. Because the chorus is most prevalent in spring, many of the singers are also in their bright breeding plumage, making identification even easier. Getting up to enjoy the dawn chorus can be an experience many birders eagerly anticipate. This walk is rated moderate due to unleveled terrain and proximity to falls. Hosted by Sarah Harris.
JONES RANCH “BEHIND THE GATE”: SATURDAY MORN 9-12P
Easy: The Jones Ranch is a special, large “Behind the Gate” area to explore. There are microclimates where various groups of birds are found. Be among the first to explore these birding areas in the Hagerman Valley. Host by Ann Parry
BILLINGSLEY CREEK KAYAK FLOAT: SATURDAY AFTERNOON 1-4P
Easy/Moderate: You will always remember floating Billingsley Creek in a kayak! Step into a kayak and float downstream while watching and listening to the red-wing and yellow-wing blackbirds. You might see and hear some osprey, owls, warblers, sparrows, turkey vultures. You just never know what will by flying by! Hosted by Sarah Harris & Brenda Weekes.
Bird Field Trip Hosts
SARAH HARRIS
Sarah grew up birding in Idaho where it all started with Tree Swallows nesting in the attic of her childhood home in Hailey. An ornithology class at the College of Idaho, that required a bird list sparked her interest in birds, bird watching and conserving bird habitat.
She currently works at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls as the Biology Department Lab Manager.
Each spring she co-leads a CSI student biology/geology field trip to destinations such as Costa Rica, Hawai’i, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Colorado Plateau. She is a long-time member of the National Audubon Society, is president of the local Prairie Falcon Chapter, has been participating in Christmas Bird Counts since 1982, and is the organizer/compiler of the Hagerman CBC. Sarah is very passionate about birds and about sharing her knowledge with others.
BILL CHISHOLM
Bill is a Magic Valley native and long advocate for the environment. Living at the mouth of Salmon Falls Creek canyon and running a small ranch along the Snake River across the river and upstream from Box Canyon, Bill spends a lot of time watching the birds that live and pass through the area.
“I’m bedazzled by the winged ones, their various flight patterns, their songs, the variety of the nests and social patterns. I guess I live in a bit of a bird watchers paradise, because I get to observe them over time, not just at a glimpse, I certainly wish I knew more.”
ANN PARRY
Ann’s admiration for birds began as a small child hearing the Western Meadowlark song from an open window at her family home in Idaho Falls. At a Hagerman Festival five years ago, Ann met Barry Brown and Nancy Turley and began assisting them with their bluebird boxes that they monitored and maintained on the Camas Prairie. When Barry passed away a few years ago, Ann took over the bluebird trail.
Ann is a member of Golden Eagle Audubon Society, Mountain Bluebird Trails Association, North American Bluebird Society, and is an Idaho Master Naturalist. She has extensive birding experience and looks forward to hosting bird field trips.
JEFF RUPRECHT
Jeff has been a birder most his life and enjoys watching birds at his feeder more than making a life list. Finding new species is always exciting. In 1980, he and two friends founded the Twin Falls Prairie Falcon Audubon Chapter. Many of his best friends come from that terrific group of birders. Jeff and his wife tend to turn any trip into a birding trip.
ORDER TRIPS
BRENDA WEEKES
Brenda is the Aquatic Resource Program Lead for Sawtooth National Forest responsible for coordinating activities related to the aquatic and fishery resources. Brenda has been an avid birder for several years in Colorado and Idaho. Last year she and Chris O’Brien hosted the tours at Ritter Island and Thousand Springs.
