EAUX speaks to Andrew Pope, design director at Fairline Boats Ltd about the new Shadow Sport

E

arlier this year the London Boat Show saw the unveiling of Fairline’s latest and fastest yacht to date, the Shadow Sport (S).

to incorporate all the same values that we stand behind as a brand, a boat designed for confident boaters with superior quality and an enduring design.

Stuart McCullough, commercial director at Fairline Boats, commented: ‘The Targa 38 has always been one of our most popular models and the updated specification offers customers even greater luxury and comfort. The styling of the Shadow S has helped us push the boundaries of people’s expectations of Fairline. The very few people who have seen the boat in the development programme have all been blown away by the progressive styling.’

‘The challenge was to use materials new to Fairline that pushed the styling boundaries but still retained or improved the level of quality that our customers expect. For example, we chose to use silver synthetic decking to better complement the exterior paint colours but we spent time evaluating the various options to ensure that we weren’t replacing teak for an inferior product. Our final choice has all the right aesthetic properties that matched the style of the boat, but also had improvements to wear, staining and more importantly was cooler than teak to stand on.’

The Shadow S is packed with new unique features and design touches throughout. Not only eye-catching in style, what is tucked away in the engine room will have you oohing and aahing, too. Volvo D6 400 engines power the Shadow S, which is capable of reaching the fastest speed of any Fairline to date (44 knots) with the added option of a Sea-Doo SPARK to add that extra element of sportiness. We spoke to design director Andrew Pope about the biggest challenges faced when working on this latest model: ‘The Shadow S was conceived as a project that would take us outside of our styling comfort zone. It would intentionally challenge the preconceptions of what a Fairline looks like. But just doing something different is not necessarily a recipe for success; the changes would still need

The Shadow S stands out not only for its speed but for its bespoke exterior paint colour, upholstery colours and synthetic decking, as well as carbon fibre panels to the helm and wet bar. ‘Burnt orange mood lighting is used throughout the cockpit, helm and deck, with the option of six underwater lights. The interior has gloss Wenge timber bulkheads and doors with bespoke detailing to the interior upholstery,’ explains Andrew. Fairline have a Targa 53 Gran Tourismo and a Squadron 53 in the works at the moment so keep an eye out for those hitting the scene later this year. To find out more visit www.fairline.com

Affair

Bang & Olufsen commemorates its 90th Birthday with the Love Affair Collection

S

ix carefully selected iconic products have been rejuvenated with a new colour palette in keeping with the surge in interest towards rose gold, which is experiencing a renaissance in the jewellery industry. The Love Affair collection allows Bang & Olufsen admirers to enjoy these iconic products in rose gold. While white gold represents friendship and yellow gold means fidelity, rose gold represents love and is therefore the ultimate inspiration for this collection. During the roaring 20s, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen started their journey into technology when it was still an almost magical phenomenon, and with the accompanying flourish of Art Deco, it was clear that luxury, glamour and exuberance were at the heart of the time. Fast-forward 90 years and the company is pleased to launch a collection that truly captures the mood and style of the time, setting the stage for a love affair that could last the ages. The radiant and romantic rose golden nuance is achieved through a unique dyeing process, which in itself

inspires our designers to create concepts that can match any style and any age, where the only limit is their imagination. This, combined with warm and elegant walnut wood, bridges past and present to represent the passion, pride and persistence that has been driving Bang & Olufsen for the last 90 years. The Love Affair Collection consists of the following six current products: the first is the majestic and recently launched BeoVision Avant 85, and then the all-in one entertainment solution BeoVision 11-46 and BeoRemote One. Also included in the range is the extremely popular magic-touch BeoPlay A9 music system and the elegant, lightweight BeoPlay H6 headphones. Last but certainly not least, the collection will include the classic, slender BeoLab 18 with a new walnut lamella front and a cabinet in a stunningly elegant rose golden version. You can experience the entire Love Affair collection at; Bang & Olufsen of Colchester 61 High Street, Colchester, CO1 1DN 01206 763344 Bang & Olufsen of Norwich 20 Bedford Street, Norwich, NR2 1AG 01603 767375

and I dressed up as characters and played in the very garden that Snugglepot and Cuddlepie did. Mamma bought me a blank pocket book and I wrote and drew my first story based on the adventures we had brought to life on the way home.

WHY CHILDREN’S BOOKS? A good children’s book, my auntie once wrote to me, will give joy both to its reader and audience. It will encourage children to love and understand the small wonders of their immediate surroundings and the complex and sometimes perplexing world in which we live.

Inspirational Suffolk The beautiful Suffolk coastline and happy childhood memories inspired author Lucy Stone to create a magical children’s book Illustrator Jenny Duke and author Lucy Stone

YOU WERE BORN IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA SO WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SUFFOLK? My father is from London and when he was a boy, my grandparents would take him and his younger sister to the Suffolk coast for their summer holidays. My grandparents later moved to Orford and my sister, cousins and I came to spend the most magical childhood holidays there. Our grandparents had a castle at the bottom of the garden. We would race to the top and wave to our grandparents on the balcony and then look out over the rooftops to the sea and along the coast towards Woodbridge in one direction and Aldeburgh, Dunwich and Southwold in the other...

Suffolk seashore. With our grandparents we looked for amber, and learnt how to identify sea pea, sea poppy and little tern. It was much too cold to swim, but bundled up, we would race our cousins to the water’s edge and look out across the waves as far as our sight could carry. Over the years we returned to the Suffolk coast in the spring, summer and winter and came to enjoy the seasonal delights of Suffolk. We sailed on the boating lake at Aldeburgh, shopped at the local village stores with Grandma, hunted for Easter eggs at the castle and ventured on Swallows and Amazon adventures.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A WRITER?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE SAMMY THE SUFFOLK SEAL? My childhood memories. And the stories of Suffolk past my family told me – the ancient Scandinavian kings and warriors that ruled East Anglia, the mythical medieval merman of Orford, the musical animals in Aldeburgh and the kingdom of Dunwich lost under the sea. My cousin Tom met a seal once as a child when sailing on the River Deben and, hearing this, I became fascinated by Suffolk’s seal colonies, of which little is known.

YOU’RE STILL QUITE YOUNG, WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS? Working on Sammy the Suffolk Seal has been truly rewarding – from revisiting my childhood memories and with the generous support of Suffolk Cottage Holidays, returning to Suffolk and undertaking research for the story. I also loved the whole writing process from putting pen to paper, overseeing the illustration and publishing to seeing how well it is being received in the local area. I hope to continue writing children’s stories set in Suffolk that celebrate this wonderful region. I have always dreamed of being a modern day May Gibbs or Beatrix Potter.

When I was four I decided I wanted to be a writer. My mother had taken my sister and I to Nutcote, the Sydney home of May Gibbs, English/Australian author of the classic children’s story Snugglepot & Cuddlepie (1918). The garden of Australian flora inspired the characters and setting of the book and in turn inspired me too. There my sister

For my family, Aldeburgh has always been a magical beach. When my sister Emma and I first encountered it on a grey autumnal day in 1996, it was a far cry from Australia’s yellow sands and sparkling blue seas. Instead we found a long sweeping slope of brown pebbles, on which blackened fishermen huts and their clinker boats huddled against the salt spray swept in by a chilly wind from the silvery sea. And yet Emma and I were captivated by the

St Joseph’s College goes Google

t St Joseph’s College, we have ‘Gone Google’ in our Prep School using inspiring Google resources to further enhance our innovative teaching and support the individual focus and all-round offering for our pupils.

St Joseph’s feels different. And that’s the way we like it! We are very proud of our ethos, which combines strong Christian values with a distinctive approach to supporting and nurturing children within a friendly, family setting.

Our teaching is based on the principle of ‘excellence and enjoyment in learning’ through active learning both in, and beyond, the classroom at all ages. This starts in the Prep School with core literacy and numeracy skills, supported by innovative teaching practices such as Read Write Inc. and Singapore Mathematics.

Alongside this focus on each child as an individual, we provide weekly, daily and even hourly opportunities in both academic and extra-curricular life to help them discover where their own passions lie. The resultant allround education develops our pupils into wellrounded individuals who challenge themselves to be their best in every aspect of life at the school and beyond.

The strength in core curriculum subjects continues throughout the school and sees very strong results particularly in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects with two prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships also awarded in 2014.

Discover what makes St Joseph’s feel different for yourself. Read our Latest News and Newsletter Archive at www.stjos.co.uk and register today for one of our ‘Snapshot’ Open Days by contacting our Admissions Team on 01473 694575 or admissions@stjos.co.uk

n a recent survey, Visit England found that more than 70 percent of visitors to Suffolk, flanked by its beautiful unspoilt coastline, made repeat visits.

Why? The Suffolk Show reveals the secrets in this high quality, family hands-on activity and entertainment extravaganza held during halfterm week May 27-28th, 2015. Organised by the Suffolk Agricultural Association, the show has agriculture at its heart, and is so keen to deliver the food and farming message that it invites all aged under 15 to enter for free. While principally Suffolk is an arable county, the show maintains some of the highest levels of livestock entries from all over the country and attracts breed societies including the Red Poll Cattle who host their own competitions. The Grand Parade, held daily showcasing all the winners in class proudly sporting colourful rosettes, is

a rarely seen spectacle outside shows that is not to be missed. Expect to see more than 2500 livestock and equine shown in a packed programme across nine showing rings. Among the 300 equine classes will be top international show jumping, many of the jumps in the major competitions are over 5ft tall, qualifiers for both Olympia and Horse of the Year Show as well as the new Amateur Ridden Hunter classes which qualify for the Royal International Horse Show. The show always has an impressive turnout of heavy horses representing most of the major breeds and is one of the few places to see so many in one place. For the first time in the show’s history there is horsepower of a different nature. Lancaster of Colchester will be bringing top marque vehicles an – F12 California T Ferrari, a

Bentley and Maserati will be displayed in the new luxury lawn retail area near the bandstand adjacent to the new destination for the Art Show. Too much activity? The Military Discovery Zone, with representation from military charities and recruiters, has a tethered hot air balloon to escape at least 100 feet off the ground to take in the scale of the show from above. There’s top quality ring entertainment from the Devil’s Horsemen stuntmen, many who have worked on TVs Game of Thrones, War Horse and the film Les Miserables. The Mascot Derby features representatives from the region’s attractions and businesses and there is entertainment in the Avenues from Covent Garden style street entertainers, the Jitterbug Dancers, mighty 8ft dancing Titan or, at children’s height, cute Sheridan the talking sheepdog on a bicycle.

FARM DISCOVERY ZONE Show director and Bury St Edmunds farmer Bill Baker is keen to point out that agriculture is very much a modern career choice and is not just all about sitting on tractors, but embracing some world class developing technologies – drones, precision drilling and biosciences – as well as food development, marketing and green energies and the industry’s many allied industries. Nothing demonstrates this better than the dedicated Farm Discovery Zone. It’s highly successful inaugural year last year saw families having a go at farming activities and caught the attention of HRH Prince Harry who visited the Show and helped make a pizza!

Here you can see and hear chicks noisily pecking their way out of their shells in a hatchery, an original steam tractor which replaced the Suffolk Punch horse, discover why rare breeds are so important, and sit in the cab of the latest agricultural machinery. The Suffolk Young Farmers host digger games, making a bale sculpture and a lot more antics that demonstrate farming is fun and ‘cool.’ Colleges are also on hand to talk apprenticeships, courses and career opportunities, many on our doorstep.

FOOD AND DRINK AT THE SHOW Suffolk has an enviable reputation for food. The area has some amazing local growers and producers making inspirational foods and drinks and supplying quality raw ingredients to top brands and national supermarkets and high end delicatessens. Adnams Food and Drink Experience is the place to try before you buy. Tantalise your tastebuds with handmade chocolates, delicious pies and sausages including Heck gluten free, as seen on The Fixer, to take home for supper; soft drinks, coffees and cordials as well as a new brassica, relishes, oils and preserves, gourmet chocolate brownies and more. Relax to the music and sample delicious foods freshly prepared in the street food styled Greene King Eat Street. Here, friends and family can discover new and different flavours and sit together but all eat something different – a parent’s delight!

EAUX Fashion Editor Pam Davis talks about maximum utility

H

ands up if you have a wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear. Don’t worry, you are not alone. Wardrobe cleansing will allow your wardrobe to breathe again.

you’ll have your answer.

Over the years it is easy to accumulate a large volume of clothing, shoes, accessories and bags. And I’m not just talking about us ladies! Expensive mistakes can be costly so it’s important to ensure your wardrobe is wearable and workable for your lifestyle.

MAKE YOUR CLOTHES WORK

My clients begin the wardrobe cleansing process with a personal style consultation. There are lots of hard and fast rules to achieving the right wardrobe for you, but here are my top tips to spring clean your wardrobe.

KEEP IT ORGANISED

Choose an afternoon when you will be undisturbed, pop your favourite music on and some comfortable clothes and make sure you have a good full sized mirror to hand.

QUESTION YOUR WARDROBE Ask yourself: Have you worn it in the last year? Does it have holes, stains or excessive wear? Does it still fit? Do I feel good in them? If the answer if no to all of them, it’s time to either throw it out or donate it to the charity shop.

CULL YOUR WARDROBE Create three piles of clothes: one for throwing out, one for donating to charity and giving to friends, another for ‘not sure’ and a last one for keeping. Start working your way through your wardrobe, trying some items on as you go and get rid of those pieces that are taking up valuable space. Only keep the clothes that really suit you. It can be difficult but be honest and brutal. If in doubt, then just ask yourself: ‘If I saw it in the store today would I buy it?’ and

At the end of your cull, you will find you have a smaller wardrobe; now you need to find out what is missing from it.

Now is the time to decide – what do you want your clothes to do for you? Is your focus to look easy-going, polished off or on-trend? Think about your signature look and creating the ideal wardrobe.

A wardrobe is far more approachable and appealing if is neat and tidy, so organise it into sections: jackets, tops, trousers, dresses and skirts. If you are super organised (like myself) then arrange your pieces in colour order from light to dark. Invest in good hangers for your wardrobe and remember that wire hangers tend to poke clothes out of shape. Wooden hangers with soft curves are usually best, especially for suits, jackets, coats and knits. Finally, don’t forget to create storage space for your accessories like shoes, belts and bags.

PREPARE Make a list of what you’re missing from your wardrobe. You’re probably not going to want to buy everything at once so start with the basic items first.

BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION The key is to create a capsule staple wardrobe. Keep your wardrobe limited to a few key colours to begin with and build on mixing colour into your wardrobe over time. These staple items will serve you through an average week – from work to the weekend, from the gym to the pub, from the office to dinner – with each piece selected for its versatility. The end result: minimum clothing and maximum utility.

On trend WHITE OUT This season, designers omit colour from their palettes to create classic, light and elegant apparel

S

S15’s London Fashion Week catwalks saw Marques’ Almeida showing dishevelled denim bleached to pure white, whilst Issa alluded to Henri Matisse with white-on-black graphic patterns, and Pringle of Scotland continued their minimal aesthetic with a selection of slinky, white separates. Though often worn with caution (beware of stains!), white is a versatile colour that can look stunning when worn head-to-toe, or coupled with hints of bolder hues and neutrals. Local independent retailers offer a selection of easyto-wear pieces to ease you into the trend.

Bee-autiful jewellery Vick Guthrie catches up with jewellery maker Will Bishop

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN JEWELLERY MAKING? I completed a degree in fine art sculpture but became interested in jewellery making after a period of travel across East and South Africa – everywhere you go they’re making jewellery out of anything that comes to hand. My girlfriend at the time, now my wife, was in the middle of doing a jewellery making course and taught me the basics and after completing a diamond setting course at The London Guildhall University I set up my business, originally working out of my garden flat in north London. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Fluid with a particular focus on surface texture. My jewellery making influences are eclectic, from the ethnic to Byzantine. WE PARTICULARLY LOVE YOUR BUMBLE BEES AND DRAGONFLIES. WHAT INSPIRED THEM? My studio is situated in a courtyard garden in a village in rural Suffolk and when the door is open in the summer the air is full of the sound of bees and there is a small pond near the door to my studio that is visited by dragonflies and damselflies.

DOES THE SUFFOLK COUNTRYSIDE INSPIRE YOU? It does, and I don’t have to travel a yard from my studio which is in the garden of my 14th century timber framed house to find it. Interesting commissions come to me on a regular basis, for instance a local farmer presented me with a Roman ring he had discovered on his land and he wanted a copy made before relinquishing to a local museum. I have made a cast of a mini bronze pestle and mortar and an ancient make-up kit, a similar discovery from a ploughed field. I have also designed rings to take gems found on the bountiful Suffolk beaches by different clients. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE TO SUFFOLK? I was bought up in north London but my grandparents had settled in Stoke-by-Nayland and I spent my holidays there so when it was my turn to bring up children, it was an obvious move to make, it being such a lovely part of the world. You can make a purchase at www.willbishop.co.uk or make an appointment to visit Will’s studio by calling 01787 210 251 or emailing info@willbishop.co.uk

dmiring the beautiful architecture of Lavenham, it’s not so difficult to completely miss the entrance to Weavers’ House Spa. Set through an entranceway and up some stairs, it’s like instantly taking a step out of the real world and into an oasis of relaxation. Weavers’ House has been in the works for years and was developed as a way of extending the experience for customers visiting Lavenham. This intimate retreat offers divine and opulent treatments in an intimate space. As you open the door to Weavers’ House your senses are filled with the subtle scent of award winning Temple Spa products that line the walls in the reception area. I was kindly greeted by Sarah, who gave me a tour of the facilities. The reception area leads through to a square hallway with stairs as the focal point. Coming off of the hallway area is the changing rooms, sauna, steam room and spa lounge. I was left to change into my swimwear and into a soft white fluffy robe that made me feel totally at ease. I then made my way through to the spa lounge area, a bright, toasty living room-like space that overlooks the Mediterranean inspired courtyard. When I entered, there was a pot of tea already waiting for me, a good start to say the least! Everything from the décor and the courtyard garden to the products is inspired by the Mediterranean – an ancient olive tree was even flown in especially. Digital lockers conceal fluffy white robes, plump towels and branded slippers for each guest. The changing rooms are quiet, warm and have everything you could need, from luxurious showers, changing cubicles and toilets. I spent a bit of time investigating the facilities on offer. Unlike other spas, there is no swimming pool at Weavers’ House; instead, there is a vitality pool that is similar to a hot tub, in the courtyard with an outdoors shower. The sauna and steam room are inside and the spa lounge is cosy and luxurious. Personally, I love this concept, it’s ideal if you’ve only got the morning or afternoon free and you just want to put your feet up.

44

Sarah had booked me in for a Weavers’ House Hug, their signature treatment, which was described as ‘out of this world.’ Before my treatment the bed was topped with a floating Hydrotherm mattress that is heated to body temperature and supports your body hugging it and giving you a weightless feeling. The treatment didn’t leave any body part untouched. It began with something I had never experienced before, body brushing, which felt extremely comforting on the skin. Proceeding this was a leg massage which incorporated warm oil, followed by arm and hands, then a heavenly deep tissue back massage using hot stones and an exclusive ‘weaving’ technique followed by body ‘rocking’. I particularly loved that part, even your hands weren’t forgotten about, they were massaged and stretched. The facial was tailored to my sensitive skin and the licorice products were used to reduce redness. Each product used felt really rich and thick and decadent on my skin. Temple Spa products are used in only the most exclusive spas in the country. My therapist Rebecca made me feel totally at ease and was considerate. The whole treatment was incredibly peaceful and pleasantly dreamy. Two hours flew by in no time at all! Rebecca showed me through to the quiet room for a post treatment sit down on a chaise longue. It was a dimly lit room with four comfy chaise lounges. In this room you take a few moments to come around from your dreamy sensations. Rebecca brought me a glass of water and a small portion of zingy lemon sorbet to bring me back to my senses and talked me through a personalised skin prescription with Temple Spa products. The Weavers’ House team had thought of everything – there was fantastic attention to detail with every aspect of my visit and I thoroughly enjoyed my two hours of luxury. Sound good? Ready, Jet set, Go I

f you’re heading off on holiday first thing is first, you need to start thinking about sun kissed skin. A beach retreat is all about the natural, effortless look. Be organised and book yourself into a salon or spa the week before you plan on going. I always advise that booking into a spa is a great way of having a pre-holiday relax to get you in the mood. I really love Dermalogica products and their facials are amazing too. They target all skin problems be it acne, scarring, redness, uneven skin tone, large pores or fine lines; they’ll get your skin into tip-top condition leaving you looking and feeling fresh, hydrated and toned. If you’re suffering from acne Dermalogica’s Overnight Clearing Gel and Breakout Control are fantastic homecare products to help banish those breakouts and they come in handy travel sizes too! It’s no secret that long lashes make you look awake as well as making you feel more feminine. Eyelash extensions are a great option but by no means the only one. LVL Lashes are the new lash alternative treatment. This is the perfect natural fuss-free way of having fuller looking lashes without the hassle of mascara and maintenance – ideal for when you’re in and out of the pool. Your lashes will stay lifted for up to eight weeks. It’s all well and good taking care of your face but don’t forget the rest of your body. Five days before you’re due to go on holiday exfoliate and moisturise your whole body. If you take care to prepare your skin you will find your suntan lasts for much longer and you won’t peel. Exfoliating increases circulation, and will improve the appearance of cellulite and give smoother skin. This can be done before showering. After you have exfoliated use a good body cream or oil to lock in nourishment, keeping your skin hydrated and silky smooth.

Counting down the weeks until your beach escape? Rhianna Prentice of The Beauty Rooms advises how to ensure you’re beach ready

If you are going for smooth, hairless legs, underarms and bikini line ensure you leave at least 24 hours before leaping into the sea or pool. Waxing before a holiday is really popular for both men and women. I always advise that if you are going to be waxed then hitting the salon is the way to go. Avoid applying moisturiser just before having your wax. When you’re on holiday you should also continue exfoliating and moisturising to prevent ingrowing hairs. Whilst on holiday apply tea tree cream to sensitive areas such as the bikini line to soothe and protect against ingrown hairs. Always pack tweezers to pluck out any small hairs that may grow back during your holiday. Finally, a manicure and/or pedicure is generally part of most ladies’ beach preparation. However, after a flight, transfer, a few beach side cocktails and a dip in the sea, it is near impossible to keep chips at bay. Gel nails are great for holidays – instantly dry, no chipping and long-lasting shine. I recommend (and use) Jessica GELeration, the gels are porous so any lanolin-free creams and oils you use will go through the gel and help keep the nails hydrated and nourished. Phenomen oil is a great travel beauty product, too – its key ingredients include vitamin e, jojoba, sweet almond oil and rice oil – it can be used on any dry areas such as elbows, knees and feet. A holiday must have! You’re now completely relaxed and beach ready. Don’t forget to use your SPF cream as well as drinking lots of water to help keep hydrated not only on the outside but the inside, too. HEALTH & BEAUTY

THE MODERN

Gentleman’s Guide TO GROOMING

Alice Manning speaks to beauty expert Becky Louise Stammers for advice on achieving a complexion that will get you noticed

TIP

It may sound like a commitment but used fortnightly you’ll really notice the difference. Men can also really benefit from facials – whether once a month or once a year, plus it’s time to relax away from your busy office.

48

As we age, our skin becomes drier – sadly, it’s a fact we can’t avoid. A rich, ultra-luxurious face cream or serum (these are perfect if you prefer light textures) will give your skin a surge of moisture. The key is to have a thorough night-time routine as this is when the skin repairs, mostly between 1-3am. Although there’s always the temptation to jump straight into bed, you really will notice the difference if you start doing this.

3 SCRUB UP Exfoliating is very important to keep skin clean (goodbye pollution, dirt and grease) and help stimulate cell renewal. Rather like buying a car you just need to decide between manual or automatic. You can go high-tech with a sonic cleansing system to make exfoliating fast, effective and fun – think of them as an electric toothbrush for your face – or go old-school with a grainy scrub. Either way, you’ll benefit from the results.

Keeping skin soft and smooth will help prevent ingrown hairs and promote a closer, more comfortable shave. Just make sure you haven’t shaved 24 hours before exfoliating as your skin may be sensitive.

Apply your serum or cream pre-shower or bath. The steam will boost penetration to stimulate collagen, improve elastin and help with cell renewal.

TIP

Confused by cleansers? If you have normal/dry skin you will really benefit from a nourishing milk cleanser while purifying foaming cleansers are perfect for combination/oily skins.

5 REMEMBER YOUR EYES The skin under your eyes is the thinnest and most fragile on your face and is under constant strain – 10,000 blinks per day, stress and sleep deprivation. Give this area a little TLC courtesy of a nourishing eye cream.

Keep your eye product in the fridge for a cooling sensation. If you suffer from tired, puffy eyes try cold cucumber slices. Rest on closed eyes, lie back and relax for a few minutes for brighter eyes.

TIP

By starting with clean skin your complexion will look healthier, brighter and products will be better absorbed. Top skincare experts advise ‘double cleansing’; the first cleanse will remove the day’s dirt and pollution while the second will work on natural oils that clog pores and cause breakouts. Spend two minutes really massaging your cleanser in daily to get the blood flow and circulation going.

4 HYDRATE

Late nights, stressful jobs and social soirées wreak havoc on your complexion and you may have spotted the results; sallow skin, dark circles and under-eye bags. In the same way health experts recommend regular detoxing for your body, it is also really great for refreshing your skin and your new secret weapon is a clay-based mask.

TIP

1 POWER WASH YOUR SKIN

2 DON’T FORGET TO DETOX

T

he face. It’s the most important part of your body and yet it’s an area that gets neglected. Why? Busy lifestyles mean minimal products and a regime of Formula 1 speed. We’ve taken the guess work out of grooming; beauty expert Becky Louise Stammers of Becky Louise Beauty Clinic in Martlesham divulges her top tips and products that’ll transform not only your skin but your daily routine. ‘Men don’t get excited about products like women and facial routines can be a chore,’ she explains. ‘It’s about finding something that suits your lifestyle and skin type and keeping it simple.’

Picnic Perfection With National Picnic Week on the way now is the perfect time to pop into Suffolk Food Hall 29th August 10-4pm, free entry Tractor Fayre and Picnic in the Paddock Enjoy watching new and vintage tractors, digging into a brisket BBQ and bar, having fun on the bouncy castle and assault course plus Young Farmers rope pull all to the sound of live music.

T

he Suffolk Food Hall deli counter is quickly filling up with delicious treats perfect for a picnic pick-up. All of the products in the deli are sourced from local suppliers including James from the Main Ingredient, Marie from Thyme for Food and the Food Hall’s own. The Scotch eggs from James are made using free range eggs and Suffolk Food Hall’s own Broxtead sausage meat; he also supplies an extra special range – scrumpy (apple and onion), leek and mustard, and black pudding and bacon. Nothing quite beats the black pudding and bacon – it’s by far one of the best sellers. The Ploughman’s eggs from Marie are a fantastic veggie alternative to the traditional scotch egg – instead of using sausage meat, she uses a mix of cheddar, pickle and breadcrumbs in a stuffing-like mixture to cover the egg. They’re packed with plenty of flavour. Marie’s tarts are also a fantastic picnic item. You can mix and match and cut them up into bite size pieces and share. Asparagus, smoked salmon and parmesan tarts are clear favourites.

13-21st June National Picnic Week

Lots of seasonal salads are also arriving for spring – the mixed bean salad is delicious, and so is the Coleslaw, which are both

picnic essentials! For those who prefer food to nibble at, make sure you try the delicious olives supplied by Glynn and Nicky at The Greek Olive Co; they offer a variety of olives and antipasti but their garlic & basil ones olives are a clear winner. Lane Farm Suffolk Salami is made by the very talented Rebecca and Sue at their farm in Brundish – perfect for snacking on in the sun. Deli Manager, Kimberley, says: ‘If I was to put a luxury picnic together made up of our products, I would pack a selection of cured meats from our charcuterie range, our bakers own caramelised red onion sausage rolls and cheese straws, a small cheese board including Colston Bassett, a good vintage cheddar and a soft cheese like Baron Bigod, hummus from Purely Pesto, freshly squeezed orange juice from our juicer, a bottle of Dedham Vale Baccus, a pot of basil and garlic olives, and of course, a luxury gelato ice cream from ‘The Hut’ in the front paddock overlooking the River Orwell.’ You’ll find some of the finest British grown strawberries around this time of year too – in fact they will be selling them in the greengrocers in the Food Hall. Head Chef at The Cookhouse, Stevie Robson, has whipped up a couple of exclusive recipes to make the most of them for your picnic hamper.

Hull and half the strawberries before placing in the freezer until frozen solid. Put the sugar, water and lemon juice in a pan and heat until it has dissolved, then remove and leave to cool. 1 punnet strawberries 1 bottle prosecco 1 bunch mint

Set aside ¼ of the strawberries. Hull and half the rest and then blend to a puree, pass through a fine sieve and set aside. Pick the mint leaves then open the prosecco. Put two or three tablespoons of strawberry puree in the bottom of a champagne flute along with a whole strawberry. Take two or three mint leaves and place them in the palm of your hands, then clap your hands a few times. This will help to release the flavour. Add these to the glasses and then finish by pouring in the prosecco.

ark Peters picked up the cooking bug from his grandmother when he was very young. But it wasn’t until he completed three years at college and entered into the world of Michelin starred restaurants that he realised that was where he belonged. Talking about his first job at a Michelin Starred restaurant Mark explained, ‘Being a perfectionist, I completely understood the importance of perfect-looking plates of food. It’s a wonderful job and the satisfaction is amazing with so much room for creation.’ Mark now owns Just Imagine Foods, providing bespoke luxury event catering and a private chef service for personal and corporate clients at home or at a chosen venue. Running such a large and popular business means a lot of hours and hard work for Mark and his team. ‘I can truly say that all people that have worked with me have been amazing,’ says Mark. Mark is a believer in minimising waste through strict portion control and good cooking. He also sources ingredients locally which he believes really benefits the business: ‘It gives me better quality produce to cook with and a great selling point when I can tell clients exactly where their fish was caught.’ Private dining is a really opulent way of experiencing food. ‘I have always wanted to be different and offer a service that is not out there at the moment,’ says Mark. A member of the team speaks to the client to find out about their ideas for the menu and then puts together a bespoke menu based around this. ‘The menu is often a joint decision – the client might suggest scallops for starters then it’s up to me to create the rest. I take into account the formality of the event, size and numbers involved, plus numbers of courses required. The client’s kitchen can play a part also. The menu is based around current trends, seasonality, and locally sourced ingredients

and the key thing is listening and exceeding clients expectations,’ Mark enthuses. Clients can then enjoy restaurant style food in their own homes without having to worry about babysitters, driving home or time constraints. Mark and his talented team serve and pack quietly and leave the kitchen in a clean and tidy state, even taking their own rubbish and recycling with them. Ever an entrepreneur, Mark believes that all good businesses should evolve naturally and be both proactive and reactive. He has recently been adding another bow to his string by offering catering to football players; this means providing nutritional meals for sports men and women to increase their performance and keep their diets focused away from the training ground. Looking ahead to the future, he is hoping to continue pushing this arm of the business. ‘We have recently moved to larger premises in Greenstead Green, and now my ambition is to create a thriving service with “Food for Sport”. Short term I would love to regularly be catering to 12 athletes. Pop-up restaurants are also a strong focus and gaining a loyal local following in the Essex/Suffolk area. I may even enter Chef of the Year again next year – I was a finalist in 2014 and have the taste for it again!’ Mark has lots of pop-ups planned throughout the year: ‘We had a three day event at Woodfarm Barns in Stonham Aspal in February. This takes place in a beautiful farmhouse and has an amazing atmosphere which brings people back time and time again. We are looking forward to returning again in November.’ If you would like to book in for one of the pop-up restaurants just visit www.justimaginefoods.com to find out more. If you‘d like to talk to Mark about holding your own private dining event you can get in touch with him on 07974 197430 or email mark@justimaginefoods.com

Fine dining in Suffolk Our editor Victoria tucks into a three course meal at The Crown, Woodbridge

T

he Crown at Woodbridge has long been on our list of must try gastro pubs, so we were delighted to have the opportunity to visit for lunch and try some of the fantastic dishes on the menu. Skylights and calming grey walls throughout give The Crown a light and airy feel. One of the things we loved most about the décor was the glass panels with buildings and boats on it which were designed and made specially. Efficient and friendly staff showed us to our table and made sure we had drinks – a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for me and a smoky red Rioja for Digital Sales Manager, Adam. The menu was incredibly varied and each dish had a big focus on locally sourced ingredients. We were given warm, fresh bread and butter to enjoy whilst we made our choice but it was certainly difficult – there was almost too much to choose from. I noticed that the menu had something for everyone, whether you fancied pigeon, pork, lamb or a juicy T-Bone steak, there was plenty to choose from. For starters Adam chose miso marinated chargrilled Sutton Hoo chicken with crunchy Asian cashew nut and green papaya salad, soy, chilli and lime dressing. This§ was fresh, zingy and flavoursome with crunchy vegetables and great presentation. I opted for the Suffolk blue cheese twice baked soufflé with pickled pear and walnut salad and Aspall Cyder caramel. Never having tried pickled pear before, I was delighted to find it was juicy and sweet. The caramel was the perfect accompaniment and the soufflé was light and not too rich, the walnuts really

complementing the other flavours. Adam opted for the Marsh View Farm red poll ground rump steak burger with melted cheese, red onion chutney and crispy bacon on a brioche bun. The burger was cooked to perfection and came with a side of crunchy onion rings in light batter and triple cooked chips which were sprinkled with crunchy Maldon sea salt. They were fluffy inside and full of flavour. I chose the Dingley Dell tenderloin chop with High House bramley apple and Aspall Cyder sauce. The pork was tender and moist, which was great as pork is easily overcooked. The apple sauce worked really well as did the grilled apple segments. Portions were large and we struggled to finish them! Of course, we had to try dessert so we managed to make a little room. I dug into the dark chocolate and hazelnut praline tart with mandarin gel and honeycomb and found it was wonderfully rich. The slice was huge and although I wanted to fit it in, I just couldn’t make the space to polish it all off! The pastry was sweet, and the tart was deep so there was plenty of filling. Adam managed to squeeze in the sticky toffee and date pudding with vanilla ice cream which was light, fluffy, and truly delicious. Presentation of every single dish was wonderful and there was a great buzzing, bustling atmosphere. Wonderful staff, great ambiance, fantastic hearty food for foodies who love epic local flavours and generous portions. Want to book a table? Call 01394 384242 or visit at The Crown, The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 1AD.

Beyond the wine tasting many offer an explorative tour of the area, a world class dining experience as well as a decadent stay in the local area. It’s easy to think that a wine tour stops at the

vineyard but many organisers wish to whet your appetite for the beautiful surroundings and heritage. Wine enthusiasts will relish in this unique way to experience fabulous flavours first hand and being able to put your trust into wine specialists who’ve been working in their specific regions for over a decade. Sit back, relax, and learn all there is to know about the wines that are created in these thriving vineyards.

Recent trips have rekindled G&T’s fascination and love of India and we place huge importance on our guides as they will enhance your overall experience. Often you might travel with the same one throughout your journey – they are not only charming people, but a fountain of knowledge too – from the fascinating myths and legends of India to the best shopping and restaurant recommendations.

72

+ A cycle rickshaw ride around Old Delhi is a must. + Good Earth lifestyle store has lovely clothes in Indian style. + We love Indian Accent restaurant at The Manor.

A day trip to visit the most extravagant monument ever built for love is possible via the relatively new Expressway with the journey to Agra by road now only three and a half hours. However, if you would prefer to see the magical Taj Mahal in the early morning sunlight, all the

guest rooms at Amarvilas, only 600 metres away, have glorious and uninterrupted views. If you have time, we recommend a visit to the Great Red Fort of Agra. The train journey from Agra to Jaipur, or the Pink City, is just four and a half hours. Stay in one of the tented rooms at Rajvilas, a beautiful resort that recreates the lifestyle of India’s legendary Rajput princes and is a unique way to experience the capital of Rajasthan. Known for its arts and crafts; jewellery, hand painted fabrics and stone sculptures, the city is a riot of colour with women in bright head coverings and men in equally vivid turbans and upturned moustaches. Polo is played on horseback and occasionally bicycles!

G&T TIPS:

The Golden Triangle of north India has some of its most vibrant and beautiful cities. Delhi – the capital of the country, Agra – the seat of power during much of Mughal rule and home to the Taj Mahal, Jaipur – with its traditions of chivalry and valour – the ‘Blue City’ of Jodphur, and, possibly one of the most romantic cities in the world, Udaipur.

Begin your adventure in Delhi, a melting pot of cultures, politics and religions and enjoy a taste of contemporary India at the beautiful and stylish Lodhi Hotel. A boutique property with immaculate service, it is a great base from which to discover the sights and sounds of this fascinating city, and the extensive spa is a welcome retreat at the end of a day’s sightseeing. Dust, noise and chaos aside, Delhi is full of stunning architecture, culture, good food and fabulous shopping.

G&T TIPS:

Shakti include in their Himalayan experiences a seven night itinerary to the Kumaon, a long time favourite for hippies and musicians who come to the mountains to meditate and compose. Privately guided walks take you through the most stunning mountain scenery

with overnight stays in remote village houses before arriving at Shatki 360º Leti for three nights. Recently awarded Relais and Chateaux status – the smallest property in the world to claim this – the four roomed Himalayan retreat offers breathtaking scenery and a chance to recharge your batteries in style and comfort. Small touches add to the overall experience – morning tea and biscuits on waking, pashmina draped beds with hot water bottles at night and fabulous cuisine overseen by Yeshi, a charming former monk – until he fell in love! With a passion for the mountains they are keen to share, the Shakti guides are all university educated, young and talented.

G&T TIPS:

Mihir Gahr, an hour’s drive away from the bustle of Jodhpur, is a stylish fort style property with nine stunning suites that all have large terraces and amazing views of the vast wilderness of the Thar. Ride one of the beautiful Marwari horses from their stables on a desert safari.

Pichola in a valley surrounded by the green Aravelli hills. The Taj Lake Palace, a vision of white marble and mosaic, spreads across an island on the lake. Its Royal Butlers, many of whom are descendants of the original palace retainers, look after guests’ every wish. Wander through the markets and bazaars, visit the City Palace buildings and the Jagdish Temple.

G&T TIPS:

Six hours by road from Jaipur, Jodhpur lies at the edge of the desert. Overnight at Raas within the walled city. An old Haveli, this contemporary boutique hotel has wonderfully charismatic, rose red sandstone buildings and a stunning position at the foot of the historic Mehrangarh Fort.

After the boardwalk, the path continues

3-4 hours

You can walk all the way to the church by following the footpath when it turns away from the river to the public road. Turn left along the road and first left along Church Lane. Do not try to walk all the way to the Church along the river.

Terrain: Paths and tracks, some of which can be very muddy at certain times. Be aware of tides when walking along the coastline. At high tides, the coastal route may be impassable.

Path across marshes, passing the derelict Walberswick windpump. The marshes support scarce wildlife, such as the bittern, that depends on fresh water but these marshes are at risk of becoming saline if sea defences cannot be sustained.

Start on Walberswick village green, facing Ferry Road and turn right towards the village hall, following the road as it bears right onto The Street. Take the footpath on your left just before you reach The Anchor pub. Take the right fork, then the left fork, and turn left again.

Continue following the path for approximately 1.5km to the edge of Dunwich Forest, then follow the track with the forest on your right and Dingle Marshes on your left. When the road is reached at Bridge Farm on the edge of Dunwich, turn left.

WRABNESS

Woodland and river ramble

You should now be on the Suffolk Coast Path with the narrow Dunwich River immediately on your left (look out for the Suffolk Coast Path marker discs). Follow the Suffolk Coast

Terrain: Paths and tracks, with some sections on minor roads. Take care crossing railway. The path along the river wall is exposed. No cycling permitted on RSPB land.

Leave Stour Wood car park via the path to left of wooden shelter. Follow a wide path through wood and bear right when path divides. At the T-junction, turn left. At cross paths, go straight and then follow track to right. Pass cottage and turn left. Follow path through woodland and between fields. At T-junction with track, turn right and cross bridge over railway. Turn left on the far side of bridge and follow path parallel with railway. At T-junction with lane, turn left. Follow lane back over railway and then to right. Walk straight ahead along Station Road.

1hr 30mins

This walk can be extended by continuing along the riverside footpath beyond the picnic site. This provides excellent views of the river, its birdlife and Iken Church in the distance. The footpath can be very muddy in places, particularly in the winter.

WALBERSWICK

This walk begins from the car park in the south eastern corner of the Maltings complex, beyond the music school building. Follow the footpath across open farmland and then over a short, wooden boardwalk. Continue past a small area of scrub before crossing a longer boardwalk through a reedbed.

through a small area of saltmarsh (please be aware that this section can flood during very high tides). Cross farmland once more to reach the end of the trail at Iken picnic site.

Marshes, coast and forest

Rivers edge ramble

SNAPE MALTINGS

Terrain: Easy – Ground under foot fairly flat, part of route on minor public road. Be aware of traffic. We recommend some type of high visibility clothing is worn.

At junction with Church Road, turn right, crossing the railway again. Follow lane past entrance to Shore Farm and around a gentle bend to the left. Take the next footpath on your right down Stone Lane. You can take a detour at this point to visit Wrabness Church.

From Dunwich, you can either retrace your route, or walk back along the beach to Walberswick. The top of the shingle bank provides the best views but the sandier shoreline makes for an easier walk.

2hrs 30mins

Follow lane down hill to river, passing caravan park on left. At bottom of hill, turn right before wooden buildings. At this point you can continue along the path or walk down to the beach. Follow path parallel with river, along river wall, through woodland and beside fields. Ignore all right turns. Go through tall kissing gate and along edge of garden. Continue along edge of fields, keeping river to left. After some distance, follow path into woodland and take the left hand fork, following signs for Essex Way.

A

maWaterways are consistently leading the way in river cruising with exceptional staff, award winning cuisine, enriching theme cruises and special on board amenities. AmaWaterways really is a river cruise experience like no other. You don’t need to just take our word for it, in the first ever Berlitz River Cruising in Europe travel guide, more than 280 ships were rated based on accommodation, public rooms, cuisine, service and other miscellaneous features. All eleven AmaWaterways ships that were assessed earned the highest rating given and received higher scores than any other river cruise line. The AmaPrima was rated the highest of any ship, followed closely by the rest of the European fleet. You do more than simply pass through a destination – you experience it in an authentic and in depth manner. AmaWaterways ships serve as your floating hotel, freeing you to truly enjoy all the sights and activities without having to worry about transportation, packing and unpacking, accommodation and meals.

Barcelona Weekend in…

One of the most dynamic cities in Europe

STAY Enjoy one of the most fascinating cities in the world from Hotel Arts Barcelona (www.hotelartsbarcelona.com), a contemporary and elegant hotel which overlooks the seafront. Alternatively, W Barcelona (www.w-barcelona.com) is equally magnificent and situated on the beach just a short stroll from El Born and the famous Gothic quarter.

SEE There are plenty of tourist sites to visit whilst in Barcelona, many of which are truly fascinating. A stroll through Park Güell (www.parkguell.cat) and a trip up inside the Sagrada Familia (www.sagradafamilia.cat) are

80

essential if you’ve not visited the city before. After the sun sets see the Font Majica (Magic Fountain) at Montjuic and watch the sun set from Tibadabo (www.tibidabo.cat), a theme park on top of the mountain, which is one of the best spots for panoramic views of the city and a somewhere the kids (and you) will adore. Stroll along the modern marina to see all the yachts and pop into the impressive aquarium. Hire a charter yacht (don’t forget your Champagne) and try deep-sea fishing or if you’re an adventurer you could even try your hand at kite surfing and jet skiing. If you fancy catching a show, be sure to book

in at concert auditorium Palau de la Musica Catalana, (www.palaumusica.cat), another architectural jewel in this wonderful city. Barcelona is a place best discovered on foot. This is certainly the best way to discover some of the many galleries and sculptures around the city. Eat tapas to your heart’s content, stroll down the thriving La Rambla to see the street performers, then get lost in the tiny streets of the Gothic Quarter. The bustling La Boquiera market is well worth a visit as is El Quim, a foodie stall inside. For people watching, pick a pew at one of the many cafés on Plaça Reial and enjoy watching life pass by. Pop into Southeby’s

EAT

In the evening (and the daytime, too) there are many exclusive and buzzing bars to enjoy. For an experience you’ll never forget visit El Bosc De Les Fades, a fairytale wax museum come cocktail bar just off La Rambla. Take your pick from 50 different fine wines in the Monvinic wine bar (www.monvinic.com) and head to Boca Chica (www.bocagrande.cat) for an elegant, refined and spacious cocktail bar where the coolest people in Barcelona hang out.

For sophisticated fine dining head straight to Cinc Sentits (www.cincsentits.com) which is considered to be one of the finest restaurants in the city. Cinc Sentits uses the freshest ingredients possible to create tasting menus with a wow factor. If you prefer something more understated you could try Can Culleretes (www.culleretes.com), which is the oldest restaurant in Catalan and nestled on a street just off La Rambla. If you’d like to sample some of the best tapas in this beautiful city make sure you visit Quimet i Quimet, a lively spot to sample some fantastic local flavours

DRINK

RELAX Take a break from all the walking with a visit to the beach or one of Barcelona’s incredibly

decadent spa and wellness venues. We love Rituels d’Orient (www.rituelsdorient.com), for a place to completely unwind. Here you’ll find Hammam steam baths and the experience can be extended to include massages and exfoliations on hot marble.

SHOP The fashion conscious will have plenty to enjoy. For some serious shopping and big name brands like Chanel, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana you’ll want to head to Passeig de Gracia. For smaller, independent boutiques head to Raval and Born where you’ll also find plenty of vintage fashion. Seems a shame to go just for the weekend, doesn’t it?

DESIGN

The new Vitara expresses Suzuki’s SUV styling heritage in a strong looking design. A clamshell bonnet (a hallmark of the Vitara series) gives the front end a look of solidity, and a trapezoid motif front bumper indicates a powerful grip on the ground. Kicked-up body-side character lines and bonnet-side air outlets form motifs from the first generation Vitara. Shoulder lines running the entire length of the body contribute to a look of SUV toughness. Plus, Suzuki’s pursuit of great aerodynamics is reflected in optimally designed bumper openings, in a roof line that slopes smoothly downward toward the rear, in flat under-body surfaces, and in side mirrors and front bumper edges whose shapes are based on the results of airflow analysis. The panoramic sunroof consists of two individually sliding glass panels, which extend over the front and rear seats, giving the cabin a more open, relaxed feel. When the sunroof is open it provides an invigorating open-roof experience. The Vitara was designed with the ultimate in personalisation in mind. Diverse exterior colours and a range of design details enable you to express your personality. Choose from 15 body colours, including three new colours and several two-tone combinations. We love the Atlantis Turquoise Pearl Metallic (ZQN) and it really evokes excitement! If you want to further stamp your mark on the Vitara you can personalise the front grille, fender garnishes, instrument panel ornament, louvre rings and centrally located clock. Not only this but you can choose from two accessory packages depending on if you prefer a sophisticated feel or a more rugged look.

INTERIOR

A boldly shaped instrument panel garnish and a U-shape design around the shift lever communicate SUV toughness. A round clock and air outlets, which are both motifs of the Grand Vitara, give the interior a youthful,

sporty look. The dashboard and interior moulding in the cabin feels built to last. There is a surprising amount of leg room and seats are firm and supportive which is ideal for driving long distances.

TECHNOLOGY

The audio system has a seven inch touch panel display that enables intuitive operation and can also be used by people wearing gloves, which is a fantastic touch. A three dimensional navigation map makes landmarks easy to distinguish. The system also allows you to use smartphone applications while on the move, ideal for any modern family.

POWER

Choose from the M16 1.6-litre petrol engine or the D16AA 1.6-litre diesel engine. With the petrol option, friction reductions combine with weight savings produce superior fuel economy together with high output and torque. With the diesel engine, a new EGR system and an electronically controlled VGT help to achieve equally powerful torque and economy. Four transmission settings – auto, sport, snow and lock – allow you to shift the focus of power to completely change your driving experience. Four-wheel drive is typically seen as detrimental to fuel economy and emissions performance but, Suzuki’s ALLGRIP system enables CO2 emissions that are remarkably low for a four-wheel drive SUV. The Vitara also has incredibly low CO2 emissions with the diesel engine. Suzuki’s targets are 106g/km with two-wheel drive and the six-speed manual transmission and 111g/km with four-wheel drive and the six-speed manual transmission. The Vitara provides great on-road performance combined with off-road capability, a hallmark of the Vitara series.

No nonsense 4x4

SsangYong is the oldest and fourth largest automotive manufacturer in Korea. Its origins can be traced back to 1954, since then it has had associations with a number of other well-known automotive brands including Mercedes-Benz, Daewoo and SAIC - which now owns MG. All SsangYong new vehicles are covered by a five year limitless mileage warranty. But unlike its rivals, what the big print has given the small print doesn’t take away. iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, Eco Cruise Control, Air-conditioning and Alloy wheels are just some of the features that come as standard across all five models. Prices start from £12,950 including VAT so with this much packed in can you afford NOT to book a test drive?

BMW i8 L

ooking for an electric car right out of an eco friendly manifesto? A car that not only looks fantastic, but also ticks all the green boxes that you could possibly want? The BMW i8 is the car for you. This futuristic driving machine does not compromise on style or speed for its more efficient elements meaning you can look as good in this as you would in any sports or super car on the market.

Gull wing doors add a touch of luxury not seen since the Lamborghini Countach burst onto the motoring scene. There’s something truly amazing about the engineering of lift doors. At first I was slightly on edge, not wanting to break the hinge, but you soon see that despite its weightless feel, the i8 is built to last. The sports mode was without a doubt fun and gave the engine the throaty roar that you would expect from the BMW engineers. With an electric range of 28 miles, supported

by a 45 litre petrol tank the i8 has a fantastic range that will ensure you get from A to B in the most environmentally friendly way possible – and in plenty of style, that’s for sure.

Every part of the i8 has been engineered to support less drag and ensure that you are getting the most out of the vehicle, from the scoop on the bonnet to the lines on the boot. Rarely do you see a new car in production that looks like the concept, but BMW have hit the nail on the head with the i8. You’d be hard pressed to fit a set of golf clubs into the boot – perhaps a set of golf shoes –

Myles Davies takes the BMW i8 for a spin but this is the case with most sports cars. You can, however, purchase a bespoke LV luggage set, which includes a garment holdall and an overnight bag specifically designed to fit the space provided. What the i8 lacks in boot space it makes up for with the two rear seats (yes, you heard that right!). The back seats, while there are two, are really only big enough for children. But I must confess that with the addition of ISO fix, BMW have really catered for the imagination and of course there’s that all-important persuasive factor – you can in fact drive the children to nursery in the car with ease. Interestingly, the i8 is available on lease hire through your business, which instantly make it a very affordable car over a three year period. It can fit the children and works well as an addition to your current family saloon. I loved every minute of the drive and have already signed up for a September delivery.

A new chapter Thirteen years on from the launch of the original, the all-new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history

T

he new Volvo XC90 captures Volvo’s future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology – the new XC90 is a real premium player. The updated new look includes a bold grille, smoothed over bonnet, updated Iron Mark badge and ‘Thor Hammer’ LED running lights at the front, yet it is the XC90’s interior, the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo, that’s most striking. The most impressive feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system. This system is virtually button free, a simplicity that opens up generous surfaces and gives us the opportunity to create a modern, luxurious interior architecture. When it comes to driving dynamics, the XC90 gives the smooth, solid ride of a premium SUV combined with sharp handling and response. There is a completely new chassis, front and rear. There are a double wishbone front suspension and a new integral link rear axle that also features a new transverse leaf spring, made of lightweight material. The XC90 can also be equipped with electronically controlled air suspension with a choice of five modes. The new model offers a range of two-litre,

four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine, which combines a supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offers an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation. The XC90 T8 delivers all the performance of a luxury SUV, but with emission levels that even small hybrid cars struggle to match. When designing the XC90 T8, Volvo chose not to compromise on performance, driving pleasure, efficiency or even luggage space. By building on the new modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and successful Drive-E petrol powertrain, Volvo has created a uniquely roomy 7-seater SUV that delivers 400hp/640Nm combined with ultra-low emissions of 59g/km The Volvo XC90 range also includes the D5 twin turbo diesel engine with 225 hp, 470 Nm, best in class fuel consumption of around 6l/100 km and the D4 turbo diesel engine with 190 hp, 400 Nm and a fuel consumption of around 5l/100 km. The all-new Volvo XC90 exudes power and prestige with plenty of road presence. Its clean, Scandinavian design is surprisingly subtle Volvo has created a car that is comfy, spacious, safe, luxurious and ultimately good to drive.

idden away surrounded by wild meadows and the beautiful Suffolk countryside you will find Terry Croucher, a trained joiner with a passion for contemporary design and economical production. From his workshop in Bramfield Terry creates visually stunning ranges of home lighting and furniture products. Each item is handmade to order using a combination of both traditional and modern techniques and is finished to perfection. The Suffolk countryside has a large influence on the design of Terry’s products and also in the way in which he chooses to work. Terry explains: ‘I am very fortunate to have a beautiful eco-friendly workshop up in the hills where there use to be an old castle. The land is stunning and the landscaping is perfect, giving a magical experience when walking around with my dog. I pick up all sorts of ideas from the natural beauty that I find.’ The Artisan Collection is Terry’s most recent work. This range of handcrafted lamps made using only the finest FSC approved materials has been incredibly popular and a growing number of interior designers and retailers are offering them to their customers. ‘The egg rack is becoming popular for its quirky design,’ says Terry, ‘and the veneered lampshades are drawing lots of interest for their contemporary design and bold colours.’ What began as a scribble on a piece of paper has quickly become one of Terry’s most popular pieces. ‘I love making these lamps! I remember showing my partner a rough sketch, and both of us thinking that it was a lovely shape. I set about designing it further on paper, then turned to CAD to get a more accurate profile. Here I started to create my prototype templates.’

not just in how it looks but in the way that it’s made too. I must feel good about the way it works during each step of the process. ‘I put a seal of approval on each piece with my initials and year of manufacture. I think to the future a lot when I’m designing my products. I know how well they’ve been made, so I know they will last a lifetime. So in 100 years time when someone sees my maker’s stamp on the bottom of one of my lamps, they will be able to say “this was well made,” and “they don’t make them like they used to.” Terry’s talents extend far beyond light making. Along with fitted furniture and units, Terry also undertakes lots of handmade bespoke joinery involving many different materials and techniques. These include stairs, ornate porches, windows and doors. ‘As a trained joiner, I have a wide range of traditional woodworking skills which combine with furniture techniques perfectly. There’s always a call for bespoke work and it forms a large part of my business. I really love it as it’s always different and often a challenge creating something unique that answers the brief.’ At the moment Terry is working on an exclusive table lamp using walnut and figured sycamore and is going to launch the start of another new collection of lamps in the May Design Series in London. ‘As soon as these products are perfected, I will then start to work on some of the furniture designs I have ready including coffee tables, side board units, bookcases, mirrors and some amazing seating solutions.’ To find out more about Terry and his work you can visit www.storm-furniture.co.uk, email info@storm-furniture.co.uk or speak to Terry on 01986 784439.

It was important to Terry to keep the elegant and subtle curve of the base as uninterrupted as possible and it took time to play around with a variety of different bases to find the right weight and wiring system that let him use silk braided cable and to let the cable exit the lamp from the side through an aged bronze eyelet. ‘I also wanted to be able to have a central column running through the lamps where I could thread a metal rod so I could hang or rest it on stools either end in order to put my finish on without getting finger marks all over it. ‘Half of the fun is sitting up all hours racking my brains to come up with a solution to a problem that I’m faced with. Call me obsessive if you like, I won’t disagree. I love what I do and the final result must be perfect,

resh, floaty floral are big this Summer. They reflect those lazy hazy days of summers gone by but colours are compellingly new and contemporary. The Saphira Collection from Romo represents this trend perfectly with prints that look like watercolour paintings – even showing delicate brush strokes on some of the designs. Asian influences are very much at the forefront. Designers Guild takes us on another far-reaching journey influenced by Chinese landscape painting, calligraphy and classic gardens with The Shangahi collection. Florals and fusions of colour with cascading stripes intertwine to encourage you to pause for reflection along your path through tranquil gardens of bamboo, riverbanks and temple steps.

Style

Colours in these popular SS15 trends range from pure confirmation whites, icy lilacs and marine blues with kisses of magenta and coral pinks. Try Little Greene Paint Company Milk Thistle 187 or Designers Guild Lilac Bud 140 for some icy elegance. For those marine blues look for Designers Guild Cobalt 50 and Bayswater Blue 61. My favourite whites are Little Greene French Grey Pale 162 and Designers Guild Chalk 4 – great backdrops for all the colours in these SS15 collections. Stripes and geometrics are still going strong this SS15 – this trend is not going anywhere! Designers Guild and Romo both have wonderful new collections of Stripes. Romo Kitson, a versatile weave collection made up of classic cotton stripes and contemporary geometric designs. The collection includes a combination of pinstripes and block stripes as well as small-scale geometrics in an array of refined and vivacious tones, adding a modern twist to timeless designs. Designers Guild offer a more relaxed collection of crisp clean whites to natural raw linen tones to offer you a variety of sophisticated finishes of varying stripes. Wallpapers continue to go from strength to strength. Cole & Son’s new Spring Collection is called Whimsical. It’s pure nostalgia and wonderfully enchanting. The Collection was inspired by classic childhood stories and fairy tales of youth. Our favourite is the re-colouring of an old favourite called Woods featuring a forest of silver birch trees – absolutely, well, whismical! Anglia Factors

settles into new home

EAUX speaks to the brains behind Anglia Factors of Martlesham

K

itchens and interiors specialist, Anglia Factors of Martlesham, officially opened its brand new extended showroom last September. So how have they used the additional space and has it made the difference they wanted? We caught up with owners Daniel and Claire Barr to find out.

HAS THE ADDITIONAL SPACE MADE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR TEAM? DB: Absolutely, we can display many more different styles of kitchens and bathrooms as well as storage ideas. Plus we have working coffee machines, ovens and hobs to allow us to demonstrate the appliances we offer.

DO YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE THE NEW SHOWROOM? CB: Our customers love the new space. It’s light, warm and welcoming and lets them see, touch and explore the various styles of cabinetry, gadgets and finishes. So many of them have given us really positive feedback on how great the new showroom looks but more importantly how useful it is in helping

them to decide which elements they want to incorporate in their own homes.

in the showroom so someone is always on hand to look after customers.

CAN YOU USE THE SPACE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN DISPLAYS?

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANGLIA FACTORS?

CB: Oh yes, we run a full programme of cooking demonstrations in the showroom where we invite local chefs to use our amazing demo kitchen to show people how to cook various dishes. For example we had Vernon Blackmore from The Table in Woodbridge come and show the W.I. how to cook Gressingham Duck. It was great fun and really informative for the ladies. We have dates booked in for the Home Economist from Neff to show how to get the most out of the Neff ovens as well as celebrity chef, Paul Foster, who always puts on a great show.

HAS THE NEW SPACE IMPROVED YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE? DB: For sure, the library in our showroom acts as a comfortable private meeting room and is a great spot for us to take clients through their plans and update them on their project. And we have two members of the team with desks

DB: As Claire said, we really do have a full schedule of events this year. Plus we provide the demonstration kitchen for the Suffolk Show and Flavours Food & Drink festivals. And we make all of our cabinetry in the workshop beside the showroom, so our team is always very busy working with the carpenters and engineers to make sure everything is just right. CB: Dan and Alex (our son) are cycling from London to Paris to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice this September as part of Hospice Team 100. So they are having to put in the miles to prepare themselves for that 300 mile marathon! All our events between now and September will be raising money for the Hospice through raffles with a range of prizes. All the information can be found on our website www.angliafactors.co.uk Visit the showroom at 34 Gloster Road, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich, IP5 3RD.

life. Instead there’s space to enjoy life, tranquility and far more of a community spirit. Whether you choose to walk or ride on the quiet lanes and bridleways or your grounds, the scenery starts at your door. There are local events, shows and festivals to enjoy and new friends to make who share the same interests and values.

With all this on your doorstep, it’s no wonder the popularity of equestrian properties remains in high demand. Emily Cooper-Reade of ECR Properties explains: ‘There is a particularly strong demand for equestrian property with more than three acres which has the potential for keeping horses. The definition of “equestrian property” can be quite broad as there is nearly always potential to add equestrian facilities; this would be subject to planning permission. Finding property with land in the right price bracket is not always easy which is why the demand remains strong.’

‘One of the first steps is to contact a specialist agent,’ says Emily. ‘If the agent covers the whole of East Anglia it should offer a good range of prices and facilities. List any amenities you may require, be prepared to talk about the costs involved to put in the facilities and any planning requirements. Always look out for properties with good outriding – these days most riders do not like to ride on the roads.’

Equestrian properties hold their value, explains Emily: ‘Due to this demand, a property with land and equestrian facilities makes a good investment. In East Anglia, buyers often move into the area to get more for their money. If equestrian facilities are not required, they could provide an income stream as appeal is always high for renting yards.’

If you buy a property with land you have the opportunity to use it to develop your interests or to change the way you live your life. The extra land will provide you with potential to either expand your property or to indulge in other activities from archery to cricket and alfresco parties for the family.

LOOKING AFTER LAND

MOVING TO A RURAL LOCATION

FOOD FROM THE GARDEN

Moving to a more rural location for the first time can be a big change. Gone is the traffic noise and 24 hour-a-day hubbub of modern

Whilst living the country lifestyle you may begin to realise that nothing tastes as good as fruit and vegetables straight from your own garden.

Whether it’s a few lettuces and strawberries or year-round self-sufficiency, with your estate you’ll be able to control your own produce as well as experiment with what you grow. Living outside of major towns gives you the space to keep animals, whether its household pets such as cats and dogs; horses to ride or show; or even stock to produce food that can be eaten fresh, stored or sold. It’s the opportunity to have that dog or pony that you or your family have always wanted, to keep chickens in a free range environment to provide your eggs and bees for your honey. Depending on the land and time you have available, you can also consider keeping sheep, pigs, goats and even cattle. There is plenty of advice available on creating the right environment for healthy and productive stock keeping.

HORSES AND PONIES If space permits, put in a manege and exercise your horse year-round whatever the ground conditions. Suffolk is an ideal location for hacking out – quiet small lanes and bridleways criss-cross the traditional countryside that will take your breath away. When buying your own countryside property, remember, you are not only making an investment, you are building a lifestyle.

ulie Valentine is bedroom, garden, cane and imports buyer at Glasswells and has been with the business for 20 years. She spends time at exhibitions throughout the year to get a feel for upcoming trends and ranges. So what garden furniture trends can we

112

see throughout 2015? The garden is being used more as an extension of living space as more people embrace the whole outdoor living experience, and choose to enjoy comfortable seating outside as well as inside. This will be reflected in more and more garden lounging furniture ranges becoming available to buy.

‘All-weather and low maintenance ranges will continue to be in high demand,’ explains Julie, ‘especially the contemporary metal mesh finish and the larger rattan weave style. There will also be a greatly improved selection of shower-proof fabrics available.’ Glasswells, Ranelagh Road, Ipswich, IP2 0AQ 01473 253164, www.glasswells.co.uk

From humble beginnings in Ipswich the muchloved family venture has been nurtured into larger premises and now has a factory and adjoining showroom at Lady Lane Industrial Estate in Hadleigh.

One of the main advantages for customers coming to Jayrest is the factory right next door to the showroom. Never again will you have to worry about unpredictable delivery times.

Jayrest takes pride in being one of the few remaining British manufacturers still in existence. Lynda comments: ‘The British furniture trade is still going through a difficult time with many businesses forced out by cheaper, imported furniture. We are proud that we have found a niche in the market for the people who want the high quality and the service that we can offer, as well as keeping the local economy strong and local people in jobs. Also, there are no high street overheads and our customers are often surprised by the reasonable prices for wonderful products.’ It is the bespoke service and attention to detail that really sets Jayrest apart from some other furniture manufacturers and retailers. Lynda explains: ‘I love what I do. I understand that the whole thing can be daunting for customers and buying furniture can be an expensive mistake if it goes wrong. ‘I try to make the experience in our showroom an enjoyable one where customers feel comfortable. I get great pleasure in seeing a customer who really doesn’t know how to go about refurbishing a room, and giving then a little guidance in order to help them walk away with something they are thrilled with.’

Passion for improvement

Improving your home is what dreams are made of

S

EHBAC understand that everybody’s home improvement journey looks different – that’s what makes them special, their unique ability to design and deliver the ultimate home improvement project. Whether it’s a simple front door or a beautiful glazed extension, it’s the passion that brings every project to life – a formula that has seen SEHBAC improve thousands of homes across the south east in the last forty years. At EAUX we wanted to get the latest home improvement low-down from SEHBAC’s sales and marketing director, Norman Hornigold: ‘it’s essential that we really get to the heart of the home improvement project with our customers – many of which are perhaps using us for the second, third or even fourth time. In fact, it was this drive to deliver the ultimate project that led us to achieve the highest accolade in the home improvement world – the National

Home Improvement Council Glazed Extension of the Year Award. A very proud moment for the business, but critically, testament to the care and attention we deliver not only in the installation phase but in the design too. ‘This really is what sets us apart. We invest heavily in our showrooms to ensure that our customers can see and feel the very latest in home improvement technology. We only work with the UK’s leading manufacturers which ensures that every project we deliver – whether it’s doors, windows or glazed extensions, incorporates the very latest technology that delivers style and energy efficiency in equal measure. ‘Home improvement is a very unique thing. And that’s our starting point. There are no pre-determined ideas about what an SEHBAC solution looks like – thermal efficiency,

aesthetic performance and functionality are a given. But what makes our installations stand out is our unrivalled passion for perfection.’ When Julia Hicks wanted to extend her property she knew exactly who to turn to. Julia explains: ‘we knew that we wanted to create a truly integrated extension – not only from the inside – but from the outside too. It was vital to ensure that the brickwork matched up and the design of the space blends seamlessly with our home. I couldn’t have asked for more from SEHBAC – from the design phase, right through to the day the extension was completed – it was a stand out performance in every conceivable way. Of course, I’m delighted that it’s our beautiful home that enabled them to win the prestigious Glazed Extension Award – thoroughly deserved.’ To view this case study video visit http://bit.ly/hicks15

Defining the outdoors

Gemma Gilman-Earle of Gilman-Earle Design talks about your outdoor space

W

ith summer just around the corner, Gilman-Earle Design is at its busiest with seasonal garden refreshes, garden design, build projects unfolding and new outdoor buildings being erected; it’s a truly exciting time for our business and clients. As with every project, the simplest way to update the look of a dreary garden space and to gain the greatest impact is through clever planning and choosing a style that suits you. Planning can often take time to formulate but it is an essential element of the design process as it ensures you receive a garden that truly represents your own unique blend of style. However, a word of caution, choose a style that complements the property and adds value, too.

Some popular looks include: • Cottage wildlife: Abundant flowers and plants with structures that attract native wildlife into the garden works well. • Contemporary: Can be applied to any size garden by using crisp clean lines and

122

an uncluttered geometric layout. Timeless natural materials and focal plants with architectural style, work well. Urban: Space is often limited when designing a garden in a built up city or town. So a simplistic design with a minimalistic approach often works well in smaller gardens. Formal gardens: Balanced symmetrical planting with a structured scheme works well in a formal setting, especially when leading to a focal point or area. Kitchen gardens: Kitchen gardens that produce fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for delicious healthy meals, work best with a sunny aspect. Raised beds and purpose built planters offer flexibility and are easy to use. Another option if you have a smaller garden is to grow espalier fruit trees along a wall or tumbling tomatoes in hanging baskets. Coastal gardens: These type of gardens require a different approach to plants and materials due to the sea air exposure and there are some great specimen plants that thrive in this type of atmosphere.

With modern media enticing you with beautiful images of completed projects it’s not hard for your aspirational taste level to outstrip your budget when planning an outdoor space. However, sometimes the simplest of design adjustments can elevate the ordinary into an eye-catching feature of the landscape, enabling you to turn even the smallest of outside spaces into a tranquil and usable sanctuary. The main thing to look at when planning your outdoor space is how you want to define it. Ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do you want to create a cohesive link between house and garden? 2. What style materials and outdoor furnishings are you planning?
 3. Do you need planting/screening for privacy?
 4. Does the design suit you and your family’s requirements? 5. Do you want an outside studio or loggia incorporated into the design to pursue hobbies and past times? With evolving enhancements in technology a

wide range of possibilities can be integrated into your outside space and garden. With Wi-Fi and sound systems at our finger tips electrics and lighting are fundamental in bridging the inside and outside zones together and will need planning before you embark on doing any hard landscaping to ensure your modern requirements are catered for within the build.

DEFINING YOUR SPACE Planting around a seating area with colourful architectural plants and climbers will help to soften the hard lines of boundaries and offer a cosy enclosure to the space. If you’re looking to create a garden for socialising you will want to look to focus effort on seating areas or garden rooms with a good aspect in the garden. Trees also offer a good level of natural screening for instant privacy with the added advantage of shade and a windbreak. Alternative screens such as woven oak paneled fences or willow screens also add interest and dimension to a garden.

Gilman-Earle Design regularly uses bespoke handmade woven oak fencing panels made from the highest quality sustainable English oak which is very strong and robust. The tailor made panels provide a stunning visual enhancement to any boundary whether it’s within a traditional or a contemporary setting. A new style we have just started using is curved woven oak panels which are handcrafted with the same benefits and qualities as the straight woven fence panels. They are made to order and create a stunning sensual shape for when straight lines simply will not do, or when you want to create a real design statement in your garden. They look absolutely stunning and offer a unique edge to a finished design project.

Well thought out garden lighting helps add an alternative ambience and usable dimension to your garden. Extending the day is just part of it – outdoor lighting provides a totally different view from the daylight perspective, be it for the summer barbecue or as an alternative to closing the curtains on cooler, damper evenings. To achieve a beautifully lit garden in a subtle and unobtrusive way is half the design challenge and with enhancements in low voltage LED bulbs over the last few years, you now have the versatility to choose from a range of colours and tones. Discreet, well hidden light fittings that enhance not dominate focal points around the garden is a primary factor that Gilman-Earle Design addresses with each new garden project.

Bespoke garden water features, sculptures, garden rooms and studios will enhance any garden layout and will draw your eye to different areas of the garden. Keep it simple and have a specific focal area in mind, otherwise the key piece you have chosen will lose its desired impact. The same goes for lighting.

et on pillars in the rugged slopes of Mt. Hengill, less than an hour from Reykjavík, glaciers and lava fields meet luxury at Ion, Iceland’s newest luxury hotel. The once abandoned building was acquired in 2011, extensively renovated and a new wing added. The new elements of the building exceed the environmentally safe building standards imposed. The 45 room hotel was named Ion after the surrounding area; the volcano near the hotel, the hot springs – it all links with the power in the land. The design of the building was also inspired by the landscape and really epitomises Icelandic living, using innovative materials, sustainable practices and clean design. Everything from bed linen to the restaurant’s food is organic and fair trade. Tables and chairs are built from recycled materials – the sinks are even made from recycled tyres. The hot springs that surround the hotel provide geothermal hot water and energy for environmentally sound design all round. Natural light is a large element of the architecture of this building. Floor to ceiling windows allow light, airy living spaces and panoramic views of the mountainside, the environs and the northern lights. Driftwood and other natural materials are used extensively throughout the building, which really brings the outside in. There is really and truly a feel of being at one with nature.

Taxing Ties with the US Graham Doubtfire, Tax Director at Scrutton Bland talks US legislation

was to introduce an incredibly wide reaching piece of legislation, part of which is known as the Foreign Accounts Tax Compliance Act, or FATCA for short.

H

ave you tried to open a bank account recently? If you have, did you notice that probably for the first time, you were asked about whether or not you had any connection with the United States? If you did, you are not alone, and if you haven’t yet had this experience, I suspect that it won’t be long before you do. You might, quite understandably, wonder why your bank is concerned as to whether or not you have links with the US, however it is not your bank that is interested, it’s the US Government. US citizens have always been required to report their income and certain expenses to the US Internal Revenue Service and for the vast majority of those citizens, this reporting obligation does not disappear if they leave the US to live abroad. In reality however, the US believes that many of these citizens are failing to report their foreign income to the IRS and as a result, the US is missing out on tax revenues. Their solution to this issue,

You might quite reasonably ask why US legislation is affecting so many people in the UK, but the simple answer is that it’s because we adopted part of this US legislation into our own 2013 Finance Act. In fact, we were not alone in doing this as a number of other countries have taken similar steps and as a result of this, our UK banks and other financial institutions are now required to identify any ‘US persons’ amongst their clients and in some circumstances, also to deduct 30% withholding tax from any payments made to them. This legislation applies not only to individuals, but also to Trusts and companies.

US persons who aren’t reporting their income to the US are unlikely to be able to stay under the radar in the future

understandable reluctance to comply with legislation which does not have its origins in the UK, however because it is now part of UK law, compliance is unfortunately not optional. So where does this leave UK tax payers? Well, for the majority who have no US links, it is likely to present little more than an inconvenience, but for those with US connections, some form of reporting will probably be required. How much and by whom will depend on the individual circumstances. One thing however is very clear: US persons who aren’t reporting their income to the US are unlikely to be able to stay under the radar in the future. So how can we help? As a member of the Nexia International network, we are able to work with tax specialists not just in the US, but all over the world, to help you make sure that your UK and foreign tax affairs are up to date. In fact, the US currently has an amnesty, which we have used to help a number of people bring their US affairs up to date. If you think that this legislation is likely to affect you and would like to talk to one of our tax specialists, then please contact our Private Client team using the following details: Graham Doubtfire t: 01473 267000 e: graham.doubtfire@scruttonbland.co.uk

As you can probably imagine, the effects of this legislation have come as quite a surprise to a great number of people, and there is an
