hen I tell people I’m a wedding planner they usually offer one of two responses: ‘oooh that must be such a glamorous job’ or ‘oh like J-Lo in that film’. The answer to both of these questions is ‘no’! Some parts of the job are glamorous but most of it isn’t, and in that J-Lo film, the wedding planner runs off with the groom! I can’t speak for other companies but that’s certainly not in my list of services! Hopefully the following will explain more about what a wedding planner does, how we can help and why you should consider one to help plan your big day.

You work long hours and don’t have the time The average bride spends the equivalent of six full time working weeks planning her wedding. Hiring a wedding planner means you have one dedicated contact point who will be with you from the initial consultation right through to your wedding day. 78% of brides who have just got married wish they’d had a professional to help plan their wedding.

You’re hiring professionals to do everything else Hiring a wedding planner is becoming the natural thing to do, 26% of UK brides do it! Why not get someone in who has done it lots of times before and has the experience to avoid common mistakes? A wedding planner will not panic when a problem arises, they will simply look at it logically and come up with a solution.

You will save money With a keen eye for detail, a wedding planner will help you set your budget and more importantly help you stick to it! Wedding planners work with venues and suppliers on a regular basis so can negotiate discounts and savings on your behalf, often saving you enough money to cover their fee.

You’re really organised but need some help For really organised brides a wedding planner is an essential investment, especially on the day. Whilst you are at home getting ready the morning of the wedding, you can relax in the knowledge that your wedding planner

12

Backup of 2015-04 Eaux Magazine - Choosing a Wedding Planner.indd 12

is making sure everything is as you have requested. The napkins are in the right place, the chairs are positioned correctly, the cake has arrived, the florist has worked their magic with the table decorations and the caterers and venue are prepared for your arrival. You can enjoy the day without worrying about anything.

Creativity Whether you want a traditional wedding that adheres to the conventional etiquette or a unique, quirky original design – a wedding planner will give your wedding the ‘wow’ factor.

Your venue includes a wedding planner in the price On-site wedding co-ordinators know everything there is to know about their venue and can recommend suppliers. An independent and professional wedding planner will provide a personal, bespoke service that is specifically tailored to you.

You will not be stressed Hire a wedding planner to deal with all the stresses of your wedding so you don’t have to. You make all the decisions, we do all the hard work! When you start planning your wedding you’ll quickly realise that there is an awful lot to do! Checklists in magazines can be quite a scary prospect but they are made to be helpful for everyone – it may not all be relevant to you and you don’t have to do everything on the list. A lot of the things to do will be stressful and

may include: family politics when writing your guest list and creating your table plan, finding the perfect dress, getting all the small details right, not to mention the emotional rollercoaster you will likely go through. Try to take some time off during the planning process. Go out for dinner and make sure wedding talk is off the agenda, meet up with friends and take some time out. Spend some time as a couple talking about your future lives together; what are your hopes and aspirations for married life? It’s equally important to spend some time together on your wedding day. I’m sure most of your married friends will have told you that your wedding day will fly by! It’s true. There are so many people to catch up with, they will all want to congratulate you – it’s not surprising if you find yourself thinking ‘where’s my new wife/husband?’ regularly throughout the day. It’s important that you make time to get away and spend a few precious moments together on the big day; your venue staff or wedding planner will be able to help facilitate this. The most important thing to remember is that you are marrying the love of your life, and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters. I have an established reputation as a highly experienced and passionate wedding planner and recently won The Wedding Industry Award for Best Independent Planner in the UK 2015. Hat Trick Jennifer Meredith talks to talented milliner, Alexandra Harper, about what it takes to create a fabulous headpiece

he art of British millinery is steeped in history, from London’s most famous hatters and contributors to the invention of the iconic bowler hat, James Lock & Co, to one of modern millinery’s most famous names, Philip Treacy, an Irish designer who was awarded an OBE for his services to the royal family. Over the years, the hat has retained its practical qualities but with the evolution of fashion as an art form, milliners have taken hats from simple utilitarian pieces to statements of personal style. A headpiece can be simple and understated or complex and avant-garde, depending on the style the client is most drawn to. We talk to London-based designer Alexandra Harper about the quality of craftsmanship that goes into designing and producing the perfect headpiece. Harper designs and produces stunning, oneoff statement hats and headpieces from her London studio. She describes her work process as ‘really quite varied, and often specific to the individual hat I am working on. If I’m creating a readyto-wear piece, my design process generally starts with a particular material or fabric that I’m eager to work with or a particular colour or style that I need to use to fit in to a collection’.

or other materials best complement the initial idea. I then begin actual construction, and I will add or subtract elements and materials as the piece begins to grow’. Her bespoke work however is a completely different matter. When working with clients who place an order for a custom-made piece, Harper will often have a very clear idea from the beginning of the process what style,

progress of the piece and they are guaranteed that their design will never be reproduced. Simply admiring the hats and headpieces that Harper creates does not do the craftsmanship as much justice as it deserves; we found out about the process that each piece undergoes when crafted by the milliner. ‘When it comes to the development of any hat or headpiece, I start by constructing the base structure through the moulding of material over a hat block to create the required shape’. This is just the first stage of the process, but it is also vital to the overall appearance of the hat. Harper often uses buckram to form her hats, which is softened in water before being moulded and left to dry into a hard shape.

‘A headpiece can be simple and understated or complex and avant-garde’

From the Maleficent collection, with its haunting, jewel-toned palette, to the Tinkerbell collection and its offering of pretty, whimsical materials, Harper’s portfolio is anything but ordinary.

© Ashley Rommelrath & Sabrina Elkin at Crane

Her work ethic is very developmental, often transforming as it progresses: ‘I don’t do a lot of sketching so the piece evolves from that material or concept, as I decide what shape

colour and headpiece her customer is looking for. ‘In these cases, it’s a clearer journey to design and construct a piece that meets the client’s wishes and expectations, while still representing the Alexandra Harper Millinery aesthetic’. This personalised service can be completed over the phone or the client can visit Harper in her studio; either way, the customer is always kept up to speed with the

‘When this stage is complete, then begins the process of adding trimmings (and in some cases, like hand-tooled flowers or sculptured feathers, the creation of those trimmings) and determining the delicate balance of those materials to create a silhouette that is visually attractive and easily worn’. This is the stage where the hat begins its transition into a piece of fashionable artwork; the embellishments and adornments can define the appearance of the headpiece and can vary from acrylic beading to Swarovski crystals and vintage veiling. Once Harper is happy with the look and feel of the hat, she applies the finishing touches to transform it into a wearable statement accessory: ‘the adding of lining fabrics, and the bands, combs or elastics that secure the piece to the wearer’s head’. Alexandra’s shop and studio are based in 25 Arlington Way, London, EC1R 1UY. Appointments can be made by telephone on 020 7833 5948, or visit her website at www.alexandraharpermillinery.com

EAUX discusses ethics and responsibility in deerstalking with Jim Allen of Discover Venison

only to the arable landscape, but also to our natural woodlands. The balance of woodlands can be negatively impacted by high levels of deer, making them less habitable for some of our more endangered wildlife, like nightingales and dormice.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED DEER STALKING AS A PROFESSION?

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR, TO GO DEERSTALKING?

I have been involved in county field sports since a young age, and I slowly began to enjoy eating wild game. Deer stalking was the next natural step for me and once I had tasted venison harvested and prepared myself, I knew I had stumbled on something that I could be passionate about whilst staying true to my values: wild venison, ethically harvested, sustainable and on my doorstep.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR DEER STALKING IS ETHICAL AND HUMANE? Being ethical and humane is of upmost importance to me and I achieve this by only taking shots that guarantee a clean, swift cull. I always approach stalking with best practice in mind, leaving the fittest of the native deer to breed and maintaining the population of native deer at an optimum level.

WHAT WOULD IT MEAN FOR FARMING AND AGRICULTURE IF DEER NUMBERS WERE NOT KEPT UNDER CONTROL? Deer can cause large amounts of damage not

16

EAUX_SEPTOCT_LIFESTYLE_THE HUNT.indd 16

Deer are crepuscular in their movements, meaning that they are most active at dusk and dawn, so this is the time you are most likely to see them. During the summer months, stalking can be very challenging due to the height of ground cover, making seeing and getting a clear shot very difficult. As first sunlight is around 0400, it makes for a very early start. Having said that, it’s also my favourite time of year as you have the countryside completely to yourself and there is lots of wildlife – which is also a pleasure to watch and enjoy.

HOW DOES DEER STALKING IN SUFFOLK COMPARE TO ELSEWHERE IN THE UK? Suffolk has five of the six deer species living in the UK and so offers some of the best stalking in the country. It’s obviously very different from the stalking in the classic highlands and the glens, but it can be equally challenging in its own right. We also have the biggest red stags in the UK, thanks to the climate and availability of good food all year round.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH MATTHEW ALLEN FORESTRY, IN REGARDS TO DEER MANAGEMENT? Matthew is my brother who runs a forestry and tree surgery business. In conjunction with the woodland management he undertakes, deer management is often an additional activity required to ensure the ongoing regeneration of the woodland.

WHO CAN BUY YOUR VENISON? Everyone. People can buy from me directly by ordering via phone, email or online. Alternatively you can find me at Wyken Vineyard farmers market several times a month and Nayland farmers market from September to March. I also stock Gislingham village shop when supplies allow, and I am attending the Aldeburgh Food Festival again this year (26th–27th September). As all of the venison I sell is local and wild stock levels vary depending on the season so typically I have less stock available through the summer months.

HEIRLOOM

H

olland & Holland are the finest gun manufacturers in the country; think of their guns as investments – heirlooms, if you like – destined to be passed down from generation to generation. Established in 1835 by entrepreneur and keen shot, Harris Holland, the brand creates instruments of artistic finesse and refined precision for the discerning country-person. The brand is synonymous with a simple and reliable mechanism, and the design of their bestselling ‘Royal’ Side-by-Side shotgun is the most replicated across the globe. Form and functionality are key traits in all of Holland & Holland’s sporting guns and their clients have nothing but high expectations for the products they purchase. Virtually any element of a Holland & Holland gun can be customised to suit a particular client. Aesthetically, any number of engraving designs and patterns can be selected; popular etchings include classic game scenes, the iconic Holland & Holland acanthus scroll, or something completely personal such as a family crest. Engravers at the London workshop spend weeks, and sometimes months, creating intricate designs

to suit the clients’ specifications and adhere to the high standards of the brand name. The action mechanisms are repeatedly tested and tweaked to ensure complete safety, but also to create minimum stress on all components of the gun, ensuring longevity for generations to come. The barrel of the gun can be shortened or lengthened to suit the future owner, undergoing a painstaking process of being drilled, turned, reamed, joined and finished. The chamber and choke can also be altered to optimise shot performance. These instruments are created for gun owners, by gun owners; a number of Holland & Holland craftsmen and employees have hunting experience, be it deer stalking, bird shooting or safari hunting. Some have developed an interest in shooting since joining the company, whilst others have been keen hunters for most of their lives. Either way, the enthusiasm for the creation of these high quality rifles is evident in their classic beauty and superior performance. Visit the Holland & Holland London Gun Room at 33 Bruton Street, W1J 6HH, or phone on 020 7499 4411.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE A DESIGNER? I’ve always loved drawing so knew I wanted to be in a creative job. When I was 13, I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer as I loved clothes so much; I then realised someone had to design the prints that went on the fabric and realised this was even more perfect for me. I guess there wasn’t one thing that inspired me to do this, but needing to be creative is something that’s always been with me.

WHAT WAS IT THAT INSPIRED YOUR SUFFOLK GARDEN COLLECTION? The Dashwood Studio (www.dashwoodstudio.com) collection was inspired by the different plants

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE REGION? I think if I had to pick one, it would be Orford. I love having breakfast at Pump Street Bakery and then walking along the sea wall in the fresh air. But Snape and the walk from Thorpeness to Aldeburgh are close runners up. I am currently based mainly in London, but I am hoping to move back – I’m looking at Woodbridge, as it has a great mix of everything: the river, farmers and vintage markets, lovely local cafes and pubs, but it’s still easy to travel to the city. It feels an exciting, but tranquil place to be.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PRINT FROM THE COLLECTION AND WHY? I think the dandelion on the white background is my favourite as it’s quite simple and I think it works across the board. I’ve seen it being made into a girl’s dress, which is a particular favourite of mine and also a women’s pajama set.

I loved being close to so much beautiful countryside and being close to the sea was an added bonus. I like to travel a lot now but there’s still something that can’t beat the beaches and landscapes back here. I think I like it more now as an adult but I do have fond memories of Felixstowe summers and Framlingham castle visits.

O

riginally a working man’s cloth, tweed was worn by farmers in Scotland and Ireland to protect them from the elements. A handwoven fabric, the texture was rough and felted, the colours neutral and earth-toned. During the mid-19th Century, many Scottish estates were acquired by English nobles, fuelled by the purchase of Balmoral by Prince Albert. The consort then designed the blue, white and crimson Balmoral Tweed, the first of the personalised Estate Tweeds, which

24

EAUX_SEPTOCT_COUTURE_HOWTOWEARTWEED.indd 24

became all the rage amongst estate owners. Early 20th century sportsmen adopted this fabric as their sporting attire, as it was the performance fabric of its time; tweed was worn for nearly every activity, including golf, cycling and tennis. Due to the evolution of fabric-manufacturing technology, tweed soon became available to the mass market. However, high quality modern-day tweeds, especially Harris, are handwoven for authenticity and its popularity is increasing with contemporary designs.

Jennifer Meredith talks to fashion designer and entrepreneur, Jade Holland Cooper

H

olland Cooper, the eponymous luxury tweed fashion brand of Suffolk-born Jade, has come a long way since its conception at the Badminton Horse Trials. I managed to catch up with Jade herself, who had just returned from the Royal Highland Show to a bustling office and heavy workload; no surprise for the young business owner, as she is accustomed to a hectic lifestyle and jam-packed schedule. Friendly, but fiercely confident in her brand, Jade tells me about striking the balance between countryside and city life, keeping products British-made, and the excitement of conquering the iconic Harrods.

WHERE DID YOU LEARN FASHION DESIGN? I was never technically trained, but I had been learning to use sewing machines since the age of three. My mother was a fashion designer, creating beautiful couture garments for clients all over the world, and that’s where I got my love of design. I was offered an unconditional place at London College of Fashion, but I turned it down to study at the Royal Agricultural University in Gloucestershire. I definitely got my entrepreneurial ambition from my parents; I have such admiration for the success they’ve achieved throughout their lives, and they’re incredibly supportive of me and my business.

DID YOU ANTICIPATE THE SUCCESS OF THE BUSINESS WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED? I had no idea. It was one of those ventures you start when you’ve finished university, and if it goes wrong then you’re stuck; but our first show sold out completely and it was fantastic! After that, it just snowballed and I was on-call 24/7, fulfilling orders and getting the word out about Holland Cooper.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE HOLLAND COOPER JOURNEY SO FAR? I’d say that being contacted by Harrods was a high point. It was such a surprise when we got the call, and I was so proud that my brand could be stocked in one of the most renowned department stores in the UK. During the three years that we’ve been at Harrods, we’ve risen

from a tiny stand to the third bestselling brand on the floor. To be honest, every day is a highlight for me. Seeing the business going from strength to strength is a very exciting process!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TWEED AS A FOCAL POINT FOR HOLLAND COOPER? When I studied at the Royal Agricultural University, I was constantly going to events such as polo tournaments and racing, and I was seeing women changing from gorgeous Chanel blazers into ill-fitting tweed jackets to participate in the events. I saw a gap in the market for luxury tweed with a fitted cut and I wanted to create garments that would make these women feel like a million dollars, whatever activity they were taking part in.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO MANUFACTURE YOUR CLOTHING IN THE UK? It was really important, especially as customers shopping on the high-end market are keen to know where their garments are made. I can walk into my London-based factories and see exactly what’s going on, whereas if products are made abroad you’re limited by what you can communicate through a telephone.

YOU GREW UP IN SUFFOLK; HOW HAS THIS INFLUENCED YOUR LIFESTYLE? The countryside will always be close to my heart. My father was a farmer and I grew up surrounded by that country lifestyle. Holland Cooper has a stand at the Suffolk Show every year; this year we had a large stand at the show and it was a real success. We also have a private appointment service in the county, where clients can commission a completely unique garment. However, I do also love being in London for its glamorous fashion scene. A lot of our customers are based in the city, and so we make our garments to suit both lifestyles. Visit the Holland Cooper website at www.hollandcooper.com or call 01608 658063 for a private appointment.

Personal

F

ashion is undoubtedly my passion and has been for the majority of my working life. Many of my clients ask me which element of my work is my favourite. This is a very hard question to answer. All my services have an equal passion behind them; all simply used at different times in the fashion calendar! There are, however, three elements that do particularly stand out for me. Catwalk modelling – winning my first ‘Girl of the month’ competition in London at the age of 18 will always hold a special place in my heart and on the catwalk – try getting me off it! Fashion Show Director – fusing

28

EAUX_SEPTOCT_COUTURE_PAMDAVIS.indd 28

EAUX fashion editor Pam Davis explains how a personal shopper could help you my experience of modelling and styling back stage on numerous fashion shows and events. I enjoy the buzz of mentoring models and working with the fab fashion network we have in Suffolk and greater Ipswich. Personal styling – my passion for fashion has been catalyst to developing my own self-image and style. It became endearing that family and friends always looked to seek fashion and styling advice from me for their own wardrobe needs! Men and women equally benefit greatly from a personal shopper for different reasons, of course. You may be shopping for an outfit for a special event or simply reworking your

wardrobe. Finding the perfect garment does not just take a great deal of effort – it needs dedicated time, too. At Fashion Candy Style we often hear the question: ‘why would I spend my money on the cost of a personal stylist when I could spend that money on clothes?’ We like to compare this to using any service, for example, a decorator. Sure, we could paint a wall but the decorator would do a much better job. A personal shopper is just the same. Sure, you can shop by yourself and people do, of course. We could give anyone some money and they could spend it, but would they spend it on the

Shopping right things? In lots of cases, the answer is no. Shopping with a personal stylist or personal shopper is just like any other service but in my eyes possibly the most important one of all. Nothing feels better than getting up and having not to even think about what clothes work best together. After a shopping trip, everything you own will have a place and a purpose. A personal shopper knows exactly where to find everything – you will be truly amazed as to what can be achieved in only an hour. Your new clothes will also work in harmony with each other.

SAVE TIME Instead of fighting the crowds in busy malls and waiting in lines, a personal shopper can do the dreaded shop for you. While the personal shopper is out you can relax at home or finish other errands. Or if you prefer, you can enjoy the shopping experience in good company.

SAVE MONEY A personal shopper will save you money in the long run. They will guide you in the right direction in regards to making the best decisions for wardrobe purchases. The purchases made will coordinate with your existing wardrobe and

lifestyle which should consist of mainly classic items to last for years. If your wardrobe includes all of the basic clothing pieces you should be able to create several different outfits without spending a fortune.

DEFINE YOUR STYLE A personal shopper can assist in finding your own personal style. You will find out which garments flatter your body shape best, and build a wardrobe that is comfortable for your lifestyle. Personal shopping can help to give you the confidence you deserve. If you are someone who cannot stand to go searching through shopping centres for an outfit, or if you are simply looking for a change, then a personal shopper may be beneficial to you!

Š Dinga

In a nutshell, the aim is to save you time and money whilst finding a wardrobe that is uniquely

suited to your personality, body shape and lifestyle, based on your budget and preferences.

Lesley Ryland, company Director, explains that the team Thurlow Champness & Son are enthusiastic when it comes to fine quality jewellery, and this enthusiasm is visible when talking to customers. Priding themselves on excellent service, the team has undergone rigorous training in order to understand all that there is to know about high quality jewellery. On top of this, their experience in the industry equips them with the ability to answer any customer enquiry.

Peter Thurlow Champness, a qualified optician and student of architecture. Their extensive knowledge of the industry took the business to new heights; Trevor worked for a fine jewellery business in Stratford-Upon-Avon, before taking a management and product knowledge course in Switzerland where he was joined by students from all over the world. Whilst Pippa relaxed her role in the company around eight years ago, Trevor became managing director and remains so today.

Due to their inarguable expertise, and success as a prominent jewellery retailer in the Suffolk area, Thurlow Champness & Son are stockists of some of the finest and most renowned brands in the industry, including Mikimoto, Rolex, Fope and Bremont. As Lesley states, it is a testament to the company of their ability to retail luxury items to the very highest of standards that these brands expect.

THE EVENT

Having worked at Thurlow Champness & Son for 24 years – almost an eighth of the time in which the business has been running – Lesley is now director and has learned an incredible amount about the jewellery industry. She maintains that there is always more to take in and learn. Over the years, she and the rest of the team have made many friends in the form of regular customers who return to the shop for its welcoming and friendly service.

HISTORY Sifting through the archives, it becomes clear that Thurlow Champness & Son is a business built on the quality of service. From 1745 to 1814, the store was home to a handcrafted timepiece manufacturer under the management of George Lumley and his wife and, latterly, John Gudgeon. The business was established in 1815, and was expanded to encompass fine jewellery and diamonds – a precursor to the kind of business that Edward Thurlow Champness and his family would run when he took the helm in 1901. Since then, the business has thrived on excellent customer rapport and high quality goods. Current owners, and brother and sister duo, Trevor and Pippa joined the firm over thirty years ago, following on from their stepfather,

Thurlow Champness & Son held a 200th anniversary event this summer on 23rd July at the Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket, attended by representatives from Rolex and Fope, who were available to talk to guests throughout the evening. Rolex showcased their 47 piece Basel Collection, which had been launched at the World Trade Fair in April this year, whilst Fope brought their newest pieces from Italy to showcase. Trevor Salt gave a speech about the history of Thurlow Champness and Son, before thanking the guests for sharing in the company’s celebrations and for their custom over the years. Approximately 100 guests were treated to champagne and canapés, and were encouraged to try on pieces from the suppliers’ collections. To further commemorate the milestone Thurlow Champness & Son is developing a collection of exquisite and unique pieces to offer indefinitely as an anniversary collection. Plus, they will be donating a percentage of the profits for 2015 to local charities close to their hearts. Keep an eye out for any announcements in the coming months – Thurlow Champness & Son may host a smaller event later in the year, in store.

THE FUTURE For those wondering what’s next on the cards for the independent jewellers, Lesley suggests a 250th anniversary celebration. Thurlow Champness & Son is a brand that strives for perfection, and we imagine that the business will celebrate success and longevity for many years to come.

Our editor Victoria Guthrie visits SK Clinic + Spa for a Pevonia Prescriptive Facial

A

beautiful old building on Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds is home to SK Clinic + Spa, a beauty salon known for its bespoke treatments and luxurious products. Spa manager Sian Thomas has an acute understanding of the uniqueness of each and every person that steps foot into the salon. No two clients will have exactly the same skin or requirements. With that in mind, Sian and the team at SK offer a tailored concept for each and every client. I was invited along to experience the award winning Pevonia Prescriptive facial, a treatment that can be tailored to all skin types. It is a world renowned, award-winning example of prescriptive skincare in action. It has received multiple commendations throughout the beauty industry and for good reason! When I arrived I was shown through to the waiting area, a calm, gently lit space with sofas to await my therapist, Anna. Anna showed me through to the treatment room and talked me through the process, explaining the different steps and benefits of the techniques that would be used. Anna began by cleansing and steaming the skin and followed this with a skin diagnosis

using a UV lamp – something which I’ve never experienced before in any other facial. The UV allowed Anna to see 2mm under the skin to find signs of sensitivity, dehydration, sun damage and congestion. This in-depth analysis lets Pevonia therapists to consider and respond to both internal and external factors, enabling them to prescribe the most suitable products to achieve long-term, stable and visible results. It turns out my skin was quite sensitive after having returned from holidaying for two weeks in the baking hot sun. Anna decided that hydrating products would be the most appropriate to put some moisture back into the skin. The products used are from a popular American brand that is gaining popularity in the UK for the natural ingredients, visible results and effectiveness. The Pevonia products, when applied to my skin, felt really rich, silky and luxurious. Anna followed this with extraction of any congestion to remove any problematic blackheads. My skin was then exfoliated with an Enzyme Powder Mask which is a wonderful creamy exfoliator, containing Pineapple and Papaya enzymes which eat away at the dead skin cells, preparing the skin for an even deeper clean. An ampoule of Vitamin C Concentrate was

then applied to replenish and rejuvenate the skin. The Dry Skin Mask was gently applied with a brush and left to work its magic whilst Anna worked her own massaging my neck and shoulders. The mask was removed with hot towels which added to the feeling of being in a fluffy cloud of loveliness! The alcohol-free Hydrating Lotion was then used to tone my skin and the balancing combination skin cream was the finishing touch. It moisturised, nourished, offered t-zone oil control and left my skin feeling silky smooth. The whole experience was blissful to say the least. Anna put me at ease and made me feel comfortable throughout and I particularly liked the extra wide beds that had enough space for even the most relaxed of arms. I had a bit of a breakout afterwards where my skin was expelling the toxins from deep within. A quick phone call and Sian explained that it was completely normal; she offered me fantastic aftercare and advice – I felt really taken care of. All in all the Pevonia Prescriptive facial made me feel fresh and revitalised. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is feeling like their skin needs a boost and wants to gain some honest and professional advice.

Anti-Ageing Rhianna Prentice from the Beauty Rooms advises on anti-ageing techniques

T

he ageing process is unfortunately one we can’t hide from. It is a common concern for both men and women. Therefore, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s never too late to start taking care of yourself and introducing new things into your everyday regime. Adding and removing parts of your daily routine can help you to look and feel younger. Our skin cells are like batteries; they produce energy, known as ATP, which causes our skin to regenerate and stay looking healthy and supple. As we get older the power in our cells decreases, causing our skin to lose its youthfulness resulting in the muscles in our face, neck and jaw starting to sag. There are so many beauty treatments on the market to help boost our collagen and elasticity as well as lift, tighten and tone the skin without having to undergo cosmetic procedures. Incorporating one facial a month into your skincare routine will help to boost your collagen and elasticity as well as your blood circulation. I highly recommend the Angelic Ritual A-Lift Facial. Using the latest nanocurrent technology to re-energise the cells in the face and neck, the probes are moved around the face helping to lift and train the muscle to where we would like them. The

38

EAUX_SEPOCT_HEALTHBEAUTY_BEAUTYROOMS.indd 38

A-Lift Facial is pain-free with immediate, long-lasting visible effects. If for medical reasons you can’t have an electrical facial there are many manual anti-ageing facials salons offer which are very effective. I recommend the Dermalogica Anti-Ageing treatment. It’s the most powerful Dermalogica treatment for prematurely ageing, dry, sun damaged skin, providing nourishment and regeneration. Using steam, the powerful products will be pushed deeper into the skin leaving you noticeably firmer, smoother and revived. Eat right. Ditching processed food and drink can really help not only with your insides but your outsides too. Processed foods and alcohol are full of toxins leaving us with the dark circles under eyes and the tired yellowy skin tone. Cutting back on alcohol can take years off you as well giving you more energy. Try adding foods to your meals like berries, nuts, kale, broccoli and spices such as turmeric and ginger which are all rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and vitamin E. These fight the production of free radicals which are known to cause ageing. Drinking plenty of green tea, which is high in antioxidants, will also help to combat ageing. It helps to regulate a protein in the body that is

responsible for the life cycle of skin cells. Finally, don’t forget about water. It does nothing but good things for our body. I cannot stress drinking water enough and a fully hydrated body will always look younger and healthier than a dehydrated one. Ever see a raisin? I rest my case! Water will help you to feel healthy inside and look younger on the outside so drink, drink, drink. Ken Hermes of thatlittlebarbershop.com talks saving face

A

s men, we spend a lot of time worrying about the hairs on our head but it’s just as important to worry about the hair on your face! I’m going to share a few tips with you which should help you along the way, whether you are sporting a big bushy beard, a twirly moustache or some designer stubble. So, you’ve taken the time to grow a beard. It’s just kind of there, hanging off your face, and you’re not too sure what to do with it next. Invest! Much like the hair on our heads, our beards need looking after too. There are hundreds of products on the market specifically for beards, so let’s discuss a few.

BEARD OIL Think of this like a conditioner. Beard oils generally have similar base oils but come in hundreds of different scents, from sweet to musky and everything in between. Beard oil promotes growth and strengthens the hair, allowing smooth and natural growth. After using oil for a week or two you will notice that your beard feels softer and less itchy. Good oil will also condition the skin underneath your beard, eliminating the risk of beard dandruff and ensuring that ingrown hairs are a thing of the past.

BEARD BALM Beard balms come in a variety of scents too, and generally when rubbed in your hands, will take an oily form. Balms are great to apply after the oil because they have a slightly denser structure allowing you to shape your beard. I advise using oils and balms with the

same scent so you don’t have conflicting smells on your face all day.

BEARD WASH This comes in many forms, from bars of soap to bottles of shampoo. Either way it is a great asset. Often unscented, using a beard wash is very refreshing and strips all your oils and balms from the previous day.

BEARD COMB Using a decent beard comb is very different to a hair comb. Beard combs come in plastic, wood and metal, and all have fine sharp teeth to ensure all knots are taken away.

WHEN AND HOW A good routine is the key to success using these products. Applying beard oil to a dry beard won’t do you any favours, so here is my simple routine for you to follow. • Wash. You can use special beard and moustache wash, or you can use hair shampoo. • Towel dry. Dry about 80% of the water from your beard. • Apply your beard oil. Use one pump/pipette and rub in your hands, then rub into the base of your beard and through your fingers. • Comb. Using a beard comb, comb downwards ensuring the oil is evenly spread. • Dry. Set your blow dryer on a fast medium heat and blow downwards, using your comb in sync to comb down – this promotes softness and length.

• Apply beard balm. Scoop out a small amount onto your finger and rub between hands. Use the palms of your hands to shape your beard.

THE MOUSTACHE Maybe a beard isn’t for you, and you have decided on a gentlemanly moustache. Or maybe you have both. Either way, a moustache requires a lot less maintenance – a few trims on the lip and an application of wax, and you are on your way. I use a miniature comb with extra fine teeth to ensure I comb all of my upper lip. I use miniature scissors to trim on my lip and have a range of moustache waxes to choose from. Moustache waxes are a lot harder than hair waxes, and you require a lot less too. You will need to scrape a small amount from the tin with the back of your fingernail, rub between your index fingers and thumbs then apply through your moustache.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR FACE? Face masks and facials aren’t just for women, you know! Most good barber shops offer these as a treatment which means you won’t have to sit in a high street nail bar feeling feminine. I would recommend a Turkish facial on a regular basis. This would include a hot towel, various balms and oils, a facial massage and a face mask. It is invigorating and really good for your skin. This helps to moisturise and clean your skin which in turn will help with spots, dry skin and pesky ingrown hairs.

5 Ways to a Healthier You Taking a break from our hectic lifestyles can be a challenge but it’s all important when focusing on a healthier you 1. TAKE SOME TIME OUT FOR YOURSELF With a non-stop schedule it is difficult to take some time out for yourself. You might be bogged down at work, having family issues or just running on an empty tank. Take some time out and treat yourself to some well-deserved me time. Recharge your batteries with a coffee in the new DLicious cafebar at David Lloyd or treat yourself to some treatments in the spa so you go home refreshed.

2. SPEND TIME WITH

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

4. FOCUSING ON YOUR NEEDS

It’s our friends and family who makes us that we are. Spending time with them can lift a heavy weight off your shoulders and will force you to remember what in life needs to be prioritised. Going out for a lunch or getting together for a gentle game of badminton, tennis or squash can remind you that it is our friends and family that pick us up and push us along.

It’s easy to forget number one. But make sure you take some time out to focus on your wants and needs. A great way to do this is to make to-do lists or write down an intention you have for that day. For example, I want to feel good in myself. Physically writing it down confirms that want in your own mind and will be easier to achieve.

3. RELAX

5. BALANCE

We are constantly being told to relax. But, some things are easier said than done. Relaxing doesn’t always entail taking a nap or sitting still for hours on end (although it can!). Why not drop the kids off in the new DL Kids area and de-stress the mind by trying our BODYBALANCE, Pilates or fitness yoga classes? They will not only relax you but will make you feel completely revitalised. Follow with a soothing full body massage at Mia Carmen for the ultimate relaxation experience.

Balance is key. Balance in all aspects of life can help you achieve a happier and healthier you. Don’t allow work life to outweigh home life or spending time with your loved ones. Take a break from the pressures of modern life and make you the priority for a short while, ensuring that you are maintaining your physical, mental and spiritual health. Just head over to David Lloyd Ipswich to get started.

All of our game at Suffolk Food Hall comes from our own estate over at Broxtead, near Woodbridge, the majority of which is shot by Ben Johnson, our excellent gamekeeper, and his team. Our estate is not only a source of wild game, we harvest crops as well so the hunting of venison helps with minimising crop

HOW DID YOU GET INTO GAMEKEEPING? Initially, it was through local association. My father was a farm labourer and my mother worked for the hunt livery, so I was brought up in the countryside around activities such as shooting and hunting. I entered the industry after completing a Youth Training Scheme at Easton College in Norfolk.

Of all the game birds Grouse is considered the king. When selecting your grouse look for a young, plump bird with deep red skin. They are small in size so one bird should be enough to serve one person. Try roasting it whole on the bone to enhance the flavour and serving with a beetroot and pearl barley risotto with buttered cavalo nero.

Partridge works well with autumnal fruits such as pears and apples: try caramelising them and serving as an accompaniment to a full bird roast including goose fat potatoes, buttered cabbage and bacon gravy.

favourite. There’s different game for different seasons of the year, and all game is delicious when cooked well. WHAT’S YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? My work routine varies throughout the seasons, but it focuses on conserving the stock of pheasants and partridges on Broxstead Estate. I feed the wildlife with wheat, I look after waterways and ponds for wild ducks and I protect the game on the ground to ensure that the young survive. However, it’s not just the game that benefits from my efforts; I work closely with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust to ensure that all wildlife flourishes.

ruffle is a delicacy, rare and highly sought after for its rich flavour and aromatic scent. Renowned for being difficult to find, truffles spring up spontaneously in the living roots of chestnut, oak, hazel and beech trees. They are not something that can easily be cultivated on a large scale, despite many attempts, which has created a certain mystique around this wonderful fungi. Truffles are subterranean mushrooms which come in a variety of different species – about 50 – including white, black and summer (burgundy). The flavour is not one you easily forget and is well worth the expense. It’s an incredible burst of distinctive round, earthy mushroom flavour which is both subtle and overwhelming at the same time. The white variety are usually served raw shaved over steaming hot pasta dishes whereas black truffles tend to be used with meats, pâté, stuffing and even cheese.

industry after wanting something to do whilst job hunting after being made redundant. ‘I had a dog, enjoyed picking wild mushrooms and lived somewhere near a secret woodland that was getting a lot of publicity for its truffles,’ he explains. He found someone to train his dog and she invited both James and his dog to participate in the first UK truffle hunting championships. ‘From the championships we were part of this movement and I saw opportunities to get English truffles to more people and to allow them to experience truffle hunting in this country which is how The English Truffle Company came about.’ Sustainable sourcing is important to James because he wants to be able to harvest truffles from his sites for many years into the future; it means he needs to look after them and treat them gently. ‘Truffles, like other mushrooms, are the “fruit” which appear at certain times of the year. The greater part of the fungus is

as well as many other Michelin starred and leading restaurants across the country. The English Truffle Company focus on English summer truffles which are a type of black truffle found and sold across a wide area of Europe. ‘They are prized for their culinary value and are close cousins to the famous Périgord black truffle, though not as strongly flavoured,’ explains James. The skin of the English summer truffle is black and covered with pyramid-shaped warts and the flesh is dark brown with marbling. ‘The aroma is described as sweet and nutty, though is quite unlike any other food.’ James’ preferred way to use truffles? ‘I like to truffle eggs by storing eggs and truffles in a sealed container for a couple of days. Truffled Brie or Camembert is also fantastic. Slice the cheese in half, shave some fresh truffle onto one half, reassemble and wrap in cling film for a few days to again let the flavour infuse into the cheese.’

Based in the beech woodlands of the south, truffle hunting was a sport for the gentry

The unusual smell and flavour made truffles an exotic item and they were held in high esteem among the noble classes. History shows that truffles date back as far as the ancient Egyptians who ate them in goose fat whilst the Greeks and Romans used them for medicinal purposes. Although the popularity of this fungi declined during the middle ages, during the Renaissance (14-17C) their popularity soared and were highly favoured by royalty for special occasions.

We spoke to James Feaver of The English Truffle Company to find out more about the history behind this much revered delicacy: ‘Between the 18th to early 20th century England had a thriving truffle industry,’ explains James. ‘Based in the beech woodlands of the south, truffle hunting was a sport for the gentry. Truffle hunters were recorded in Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex and on the Isle of Wight. The last professional truffle hunter of this era retired in 1930 and truffle hunting disappeared.’ James goes on to say that the last decade has seen a huge growth of interest in local food and this led to a resurgence of interest in English truffles. James first became involved in the

a network of microscopic threads that run through the ground; the truffles grow on this. This is the mycelium and you don’t want to damage it. Firstly, we use trained dogs to show us precisely where the truffles are. We then sniff the ground to assess the ripeness and if ready, gently excavate from the ground using a special tool. We have heard reports from overseas of people using spades or rakes; this practice damages the mycelium meaning the end of truffles in that location. Secondly, we always leave some truffles in the ground hoping their spores will act as “seed” for a new mycelium and new truffles to grow.’ Although The English Truffle Company primarily provide truffles to the public; they do supply retailers, wholesalers and have even supplied Hairy Biker Si King, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Mark Hix’s London restaurants

The English Truffle Company also offer truffle-lovers hunting days which run from October to January which are incredibly popular. These hunting days are so unique, James insists that you would have to go overseas to experience a similar day. ‘They attract foodies who want a really unusual day out and also people who want to learn how to find truffles.’ Based in Dorset and Wiltshire, the days start indoors with an illustrated talk covering truffle biology, history, species, finding, growing and eating truffles. James goes on to explain that everyone then heads into the woods for some truffle hunting with the trained dogs. Guests get a chance to be involved and excavate a truffle that the dog has located. After a pub or farmhouse lunch it is back to the woods for some more truffle hunting before afternoon tea. The highlight is a dish where guests shave onto it the truffle that they have found and if it’s a particularly good day, everyone gets to take some truffle home. If that sounds like a great day out for you, you can find out more on www.englishtruffles.co.uk, by emailing info@englishtruffles.co.uk or calling 07747 014425

ancient buildings, winding roads that bring you to unspoilt traditional villages, cathedrals and even a castle. The area has an abundance of historical and cultural places of interest and many picturesque wine routes to drive. The pace of life here is relaxed and the people are passionate about the local produce (olive oil, cheeses, chestnuts, asparagus) – particularly about their wine! Protected by the Dolomite Mountains on one side and the Aegean Sea on the other, the landscape sweeps up from the flat land near the coast to the steep hills of Cartizze in the north, producing a microclimate ideal for viticulture. These two extremes of landscape vary considerably. On the flat land tending and harvesting grapes is easier with the use of modern machinery, in comparison to the mountainous regions which are inaccessible to modern machinery and are tended, cultivated and harvested by hand. Harvesting is generally

carried out at the end of September with the local community coming together to get the precious harvest in; this in turn makes the wine more expensive to produce. Despite the varied landscape, this region is ideal for grape production and is due to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The warm breeze from the sea and winds circulating from the Alps air the vines, protecting them from the worst of the weather. On my trip I visited the Scuola Enologica di Conegliano, the oldest school of winemaking in Europe, which was founded in 1876. We met with Filippo who explained in more detail what makes the wine from this region so special. He spoke of production regulations, figures and characteristics of the area with its mild climate and plenty of sunshine. The vines in the region are of very high quality and have a DOC certification.

Only wines produced within the historic Conegliano Valdobbiadene area are given the finest quality government certification of DOCG which is a sign of excellence. Each of the 15 sub zones in this area produce slight variations depending on the amount of rainfall, sunshine, minerals in the soil and ripeness when harvested – some producers leave the skins on for added taste and depth. Ancient glacial deposits form the hills and the soil varies with mixtures of clay, sand stone and marlstone, all making a difference to the final taste.

explained how the grapes are generally harvested at the end of September depending on the weather and ripeness of the grapes. The whole community comes together to pick for a frantic few weeks that are vital to this region’s success.

Wines produced in this area all show the name of the region – Conegliano Valdobbiadene – followed by Prosecco – and Superiore if sparkling – and one of the 15 sub zones (preceded by the term ‘Rive’) on the label.

The grapes are put directly into a press and the first juices are extracted. This juice is then transferred for separation and the clean juice is used to make the first wine. It is then fermented for 8-10 days before being put into temperature controlled autoclaves (tanks) for three months at eight degrees. At this point the process to make it a sparkling wine begins, by the addition of yeast and sugar until five bar of pressure is achieved. When the process is stopped, the temperature is lowered and then after filtering, bottling can take place.

Winemaker Paola from Vigne Matte vineyard

The taste of wines from this region are light

and have fresh aromas but vary greatly; flavours include hints of strawberry, pineapple, green apple and green pear. Each winery has its own glass design; the shape is an important part of the drinking process as it determines the rate at which the bubbles disperse from the Prosecco which affects the taste experience and aroma. During our trip we visited many beautiful churches, the Carpaccio art exhibition, wonderful traditional restaurants and a wide selection of vineyards from across the region. I quickly realised how unique the Conegliano Valdobbiadene region is and the variety of different wines produced in such a small area. Vineyards are passed down through the generations along with the skill, passion and knowledge of local people, which is what makes this wine-making region so special. Go on, open a bottle. You know you want to.

Fine dining… @Twenty5

his intimate, cosy restaurant in the heart of Ipswich is renowned for its fantastic food and ambiance. Owned by Mel and her husband, @Twenty5 is an entirely family run business; Mel’s sons, nieces, nephews and sister make up the highly competent team of chefs and waiting staff.

generous. The homemade chilli jam that came with the dish had a really good kick to it and the salad dressing on mixed leaves worked well with the cheese. The croquettes were filled with potato, beef chunks and onion and were really fluffy; the coating was light and crispy and there was plenty of burnt onion sauce to dip them into.

As the winner of the Good Food Award, it’s no surprise that booking a table needs to be done well in advance. We visited on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was fully booked. Mel has many connections with Frinton and this is where she sources her meat; where possible, all other ingredients are sourced locally, too.

Service throughout was very prompt. My dining partner opted for the walnut and beetroot salad from the specials list along with onion rings and coleslaw as sides. The onion rings were incredibly crunchy, were well salted and some of the biggest I’ve seen whilst the coleslaw was deliciously mild and creamy. The salad worked well as a light meal but for hungrier people I would definitely recommend a side or two. The feta was crumbled onto the mixed leaves with walnuts and beetroot and then drizzled with a tasty sweet balsamic dressing. The beetroot had a hint of sweetness to it, which worked really well with the nuttiness of the walnuts.

The building itself is simple and contemporary with a slight rustic feel. It’s cosy inside with a great view of the kitchen and chefs hard at work; the large courtyard is perfect for big groups and enjoying the last of the summer evenings. There is a good choice on the menu but it’s not overwhelming and the specials change on a daily basis. I was pleasantly surprised to find a great selection of gluten free alternatives. This was fantastic to see as not many restaurants cater to food intolerances quite so well. To start we shared halloumi chips and beef and onion croquettes with burnt onion sauce. The halloumi chips brought a whole new meaning to the phrase cheesy chips! They were seasoned well and the portion was very

I chose the wild mushroom lasagna, which had a wonderful layer of crispy golden cheese on top and was filled with firm, meaty chunks of wild mushroom. This was accompanied with a side salad – there was plenty of food for a hungry person although I’m sure I could have squeezed in a tasty side dish if I’d really tried! The service was prompt yet relaxed and we were given a good amount of time between our main and dessert to make space for more great food, which meant we didn’t feel rushed.

For dessert we sampled the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, which was lovely and delicate in light in texture. The ice cream was a wonderful accompaniment and was made with vanilla seeds for a really rich, sweet flavour. I chose the white chocolate and raspberry brioche pudding with cream which was crunchy on top and silky smooth in the centre, a truly delightful dessert that I’d eat every day if I could! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at @Twenty5. Once your table is booked it’s yours for the night; I really loved this as there is no pressure to leave and you feel like you can stay post meal and enjoy a bottle of wine at your leisure. If you’d like to dine at @Twenty5 you can book a table by calling 01473 287625, or popping in at 25 St Nicholas Street, Ipswich, IP1 1TW.

Summer Becca Green speaks to the world’s first female gin distiller, Joanne Moore

As you’d expect, Joanne is immensely proud to be one of the few female masters distillers. She says: ‘I am extremely pleased to see more women turning to this type of career choice, which is known for being a male dominated industry’. Gin has become the alcohol of choice for the trendy go-getter. Joanne explains why she thinks gin has become so popular: ‘It has complexity and great mix ability in cocktails plus with the plethora of gins now appearing on the market there is a style of gin out there

to suit everyone’s tastes.’ Joanne is the mastermind behind three brands of premium gin, BLOOM, Berkeley Square and most recently, Ophir; each has its own original and creative flavour blend. Joanne believes that gin is luxurious because of its ‘handcrafted use of botanicals that are sourced from around the world.’ She says: ‘they take time and expertise to distil so it’s natural to associate these attributes with luxury.’ The process from conception to creation is a very exciting one. We ask Joanne what her own individual experience was like: ‘Creating BLOOM was exciting because I was part of the whole journey from creation to launch so I was able to ensure that there was complete synergy between the gin I created and the look and feel of the brand. To have a vision in your head and see it become reality is great!’ The team at EAUX were eager to know the inspiration behind BLOOM. Joanne admitted

that the ‘initial inspiration for BLOOM was all about the English garden and creating a space for a delicate light floral gin.’ And we believe she has done just that. BLOOM is light, fragrant and refreshing. Joanne believes ‘the camomile and honeysuckle edible flowers in BLOOM’s profile makes it the perfect companion for floral notes that work well with the traditional juniper perfume aromas.’ Amongst the severity of gin distilling, we had to ask Joanne the most important question of all – what her favourite gin cocktail is, of course! Her answer was plain and simple: a French 75. Just combine gin and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker, fill with ice, shake, then pour into a tall glass and top up with champers. Perfection. So, what’s next for Joanne? Her reply was very suggestive, ‘well that would be telling.’ Thus, expect to see more from Joanne, as she carries on producing the finest, most luxurious and tasty gins on the market.

oanne Moore is the only known female master distiller in the world. Appointed in 2006 after working for the distillery for 10 years, Joanne oversees every stage of the gin-making process at G & J Greenall. She monitors all experimentation with new botanicals and flavour combinations to find innovative blends. One of these very blends led her to create BLOOM gin, the perfect summer beverage.

From China

to the World I

Yulia Zhizhaeva from JADU Tea London tells EAUX about the ancient art of tea drinking

t is said that the Chinese discovered the magic of tea almost 5000 years ago. However, it was not until the beginning of the 17th century that tea began its journey to Europe. East India companies of Portugal and Holland began to explore the South China seas and trade with China. It was the Dutch who were responsible for introducing tea to London and, since it was an very expensive at that time, this new herb was the luxury indulgence of the rich who purchased and drank it in small quantities. It was a real luxury enjoyed by the wealthy – mostly royals and aristocrats. At the time, tea was locked in cupboards and drunk on special occasions to enjoy, and also to impress guests. The fine art of tea drinking is simple and at the same time sophisticated. First comes the simplicity of ingredients, water and leaves and then the intricacy of the perfect brewing and ceremonial drinking. It could be just a gathering with friends and family; but these moments shared together over tea are unique and special.

There are many different teas and herbal infusions to choose from. It could be traditional black tea, an exquisite green tea or it could be white tea that is in its purest form and is renowned for being full of beautifying antioxidants. You can choose from healthy herbal infusions to lift the spirit and satisfy the body or an indulgent blend based on rooibos. In today’s busy world, tea is the ultimate treat; a simple everyday luxury that we can pamper ourselves with. We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with new opportunities, lots of information, stress at work and lack of time to do everything we want. There is less and less time to enjoy life. Tea is one of those little treasures which takes you away, allows you to relax and brings you back to your senses. It can re-energise and at the same time can keep us calm and happy. High quality tea is a perfect gift for any occasion, and a symbol of togetherness.

© eurobanks | shutterstock.com

The perfect brewing requires care, love and knowledge. As John Calthorn poetically exemplifies in his essay published in Tien Hsia Monthly, April 1939: ‘The finest tea we are told should be infused in none but water from a bubbling spring, as no other water possesses enough life to be worthy of such

tender leaves.’ Calthorpe was a writer, traveller and noted publisher of long essays and books about tea. Poetry aside, there are some rules when it comes to brewing. White and green teas, for instance, taste better if you heat freshly drawn water to about 80°c. You should also remove the leaves or teabags after reaching the brewing time, otherwise, the tea will keep brewing and lose its flavour profile.

Score the pork skin and rub with a little salt. Double wrap in foil and place on a baking tray in the oven for 40mins. Turn the oven down to 120°c and continue to cook for 6-8 hours. Remove from the oven, cover in a tea towel to keep warm and allow it to rest. Prepare the potatoes – place each potato in a wooden spoon and slice at 3mm intervals – the idea is you leave the potato joined along the bottom. Drizzle with the smoked rapeseed oil, making sure the oil goes into all the cracks. Sprinkle with sea salt. Roughly cut up red peppers, onions, courgettes and any other root veg you fancy, coat in a little Doo-Dah Sauce on a baking tray. Turn the oven back up to 180°c and put the root veg and potatoes in for 45-60mins, depending on their size, but they should be crispy on the outside. Turn up the oven, take the skin off the pork and place on a tray into the oven for a few minutes to crisp up. To serve, simply pull the pork into strips with a fork, drizzle over the Ornamental Sauce, making sure it’s all coated, and serve with the roasted veg, potatoes and crackling.

ESCAPE

Make G&T your travel tonic

Victoria Guthrie sits down with Julia Townsend of Goodacre & Townsend to find out how her team can help craft the perfect adventure HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN TRAVEL? My father was in the timber trade and travelled regularly to destinations such as Canada, Finland, Sweden, Russia and the former Czechoslovakia. As a child I loved hearing about his travels and was fascinated by the gifts he returned with.

Julia

I have fond memories of holidaying on the lakes in Finland… out of the sauna and into the icy cold lake and midsummer night crayfish parties! From an early age I knew I wanted to see more of the world and had a healthy interest in luxury hotels and fine dining establishments! HOW DID THE BUSINESS INITIALLY BEGIN? I spent a number of years in the shipping and marine insurance industries in London. As my career progressed I travelled more and my interest in the travel industry grew. I took a year’s sabbatical between jobs and journeyed with a friend from Nairobi to Cape Town. This definitely was the turning point for me and it ignited my passion for Africa. On returning to the UK I persuaded my then employers to back myself and a girlfriend in setting up

a boutique travel consultancy – at that time focusing on both high end corporate and leisure travel for the London market. In 2006 we were approached by a city based corporate travel agency that was looking to expand into the leisure side of the business. They bought G&T and I joined their team with responsibility to grow the leisure business under the G&T brand and also to continue with corporate sales. In 2009 with the travel agency up for sale, I agreed with my fellow directors that I would perform an MBO of the G&T side of the business. I moved the main G&T office to Regent Street and we now also operate out of a converted outbuilding at my home in Suffolk. With a loyal customer base and some wonderfully supportive trade partners we have continued to build the business and now focus almost entirely on private travel arrangements for individuals. We do still provide some very bespoke business travel services and are often asked by our clients to assist with small incentive trips and birthday celebrations – something we love doing and a wonderful opportunity to provide lots of wow factor!

WHAT IS THE G&T ETHOS? Exceeding expectations! We are lucky enough to have grown organically over the years and to personally know many of our clients, a high number of whom are referrals from existing clients. This enables us to be able to build a detailed profile on each client’s likes and dislikes and thereby tailor each trip. Your holiday is personal to you and making each and every trip a truly memorable experience is what we aspire to do. WHAT DO YOU FEEL SETS G&T APART FROM OTHER SIMILAR BUSINESSES? We are small and therefore flexible. We are not tied to a brochure or to certain suppliers. What we offer, how we work and who we work with is down to us to decide. If I had to pigeon-hole the business then we are in the luxury travel sector, however this doesn’t mean there is a 5* price tag attached to all elements. For so many of us luxury is simply getting away from it all. We love sourcing new properties with stylish interiors, fabulous food, great service and genuine local experiences. We all have great contacts dotted around the world. We do not for a minute pretend to have been everywhere, but if we haven’t seen a new hotel or been to a particular destination, we are likely to know someone like-minded who has.

72

EAUX_SEPTOCT_ESCAPE_G&T.indd 72

YOU SAY YOU ARE NEITHER TRAVEL AGENT NOR TOUR OPERATOR – HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO? I think G&T is probably best described as a consultancy – in the true sense of the word. Unlike many travel agents and tour operators, we are not bound by hotel contracts and specific brochured products. Sometimes we work with UK-based specialists acting as an agent, sometimes we work with handpicked ground agents in the client’s chosen destination. Sometimes we deal directly with a specifically chosen property and put together our own holiday itinerary. We choose our partners very carefully and they are always amongst the best in their field.

a good and an excellent experience. This is never more important than when catering to families – a guide who can bring, for example, a visit to Pompeii alive for a child will ensure that holiday is both a memorable and educational experience. Restaurant recommendations and reservations, spa bookings and arranging of excursions are just some of the additional services we provide.

I think it is important to stress that in addition to being able to offer unique itineraries tailored to our individual clients, our membership of the Travel Trust Association (TTA) provides customers with 100% financial security. All client funds are held in a Trust Account and use of client funds to pay a supplier has to be co-authorised by a TTA trustee.

G&T has preferred partnerships with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Peninsula Hotels and Belmond Hotels, Trains and River Cruises (formerly Orient Express) which enable us to pass on benefits to our clients when booking any of these properties.

CAN YOU OUTLINE THE DIFFERENT SERVICES YOU OFFER CLIENTS? G&T do place huge emphasis on guiding – a fantastic guide who has years of experience and immense knowledge of the place you are visiting can really make the difference between

WHAT EXTRA BENEFITS CAN CLIENTS EXPECT FROM BOOKING WITH G&T INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY? Having been in the business for in excess of 20 years we have excellent relationships with hoteliers and ground agents worldwide.

We are also founder members of Traveller Made – a network community of luxury travel designers all of whom are dedicated to providing unique and exclusive bespoke experiences; benefits differ between properties but typically include complimentary breakfast, upgrades subject to availability, food and beverage credits and on occasion flexible

check-in and check-out times. HOW OFTEN DO YOU AND YOUR TEAM TRAVEL? As much as we can between running the business, looking after clients and maintaining contact with our families! To date this year the team have travelled to South Africa, India, Florida and Belize, Oman and Dubai, California and Nevada and various trips to Europe to include France, Greece, Croatia and Italy. Trips to the Caribbean and possibly the Maldives are on the agenda before the end of the year. HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE BETWEEN YOU? We are a small team who between us have been in the industry for well over 70 years and have visited in excess of that many countries! However, it isn’t simply ticking the boxes in terms of years in the industry and countries travelled to – it is also the experience we have gained during that time both spending extended time in countries and understanding the local cultures. One of the team, for example, has lived for a number of years in Africa, has experience both in working for and running safari operations and remains a judge for the Good Safari Guide. Another, who has been in the industry for over 30 years has also

had periods of living overseas and the most recently recruited team member has spent the last seven years running a travel company in New York. ARE THERE ANY AREAS IN WHICH YOU PARTICULARLY SPECIALISE? We really do offer a worldwide travel service and have contacts all over the world, but East and Southern Africa and Latin America are areas in which we are particularly strong – also India and Australia. HOW DO YOU CATER TO CHILDREN? The G&T team have children ranging from 29 years down to 18 months so we are reasonably well-versed in family travel. We are familiar with the need for cots, bottle warmers and nappy bins as well as with the later requirements of exciting family-friendly holidays such as a Tanzanian safari, a Dhow Cruise in Mozambique or a Moroccan desert adventure. We have in recent years seen a huge growth in family holiday enquiries, often to accommodate extended family such as grandparents. Hotels and resorts are increasingly catering to accommodate this wish for adventure and an authentic experience. Travelling as a family is a great way to spend time together and create amazing memories.

It is also an excellent way to educate children in the different cultures and ways of life and the experiences they have are invaluable. Learning can be a fun part of a holiday! Kids can enjoy spending time on a sailing course, a PADI dive, riding with gauchos in Latin America or learning to be a Maasai Warrior! DO YOU WORK WITH ANY CHARITIES? We currently support Uthando (www.uthandosa.org) by including a contribution for every booking G&T makes to South Africa. The aim of Uthando is to raise funds and other forms of assistance for community development projects in South Africa. We are looking for similar projects in other destinations that we send high volumes of people to. We are also supporting a couple of charity events later this year. If you would like to speak to Julia or a member of her team, in London or Suffolk, about creating your own trip of a lifetime, call 020 7434 2255.

Escape in the Heart of Suffolk

I

t can be hard sometimes to take a step back, relax and leave the pressures of work and family life behind. The Suffolk Escape offers you a chance to take a breather and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can make yourself at home in one of just four luxurious, private log cabins with hot tubs set in an idyllic, rural retreat in the heart of our picturesque county. The Suffolk Escape is perfect for quiet romantic getaways. Set upon a serene landscape on the edge of a still lake the four luxury log cabins are in the perfect location to relax with your loved one. The Suffolk Escape offers a wide range of facilities to meet to your every need. The log cabins are self-catered but hosts Andrew and Sarah want guests to relish in their own individual farm-life experience and they are

able to offer first hand advice on where to source the very best produce (and takeaways if you don’t feel like cooking). If you fancy having a cosy night in, a private chef can be arranged to showcase the best of local produce in an indulgent three course meal; how does roast rump of lamb with a herb couscous and spiced aubergine puree sound? Decadent? We thought so too. After fully indulging yourselves you can take a relaxing dip in your own private hot tub. Plush cotton towels and glasses for bubbly are provided so you can have a truly magical night in. There are also additional pamper treatments available on site that can be transported to the comfort of your own cabin. Relieve that tension with a soothing head and shoulder massage or an hour long full body massage can be arranged. Christmas is a manic time for all of us so

instead of slaving away over the stove take some time out to relax. Each log cabin has a built-in open log fire and cosy furnishings to make sure your stay is a home away from home. Andrew says: ‘many of our guests hear about us through Trip Advisor; The Suffolk Escape is one of only a few places to have received a 100% of guest feedback as a 5/5 rating. This is also the reason many people decide to book with us as they know they can relax, thanks to the independent feedback, knowing that they will receive a high quality experience.’ Whether you are planning to book a quick weekend break or a week long stay you can have confidence that your escape will be everything you could have hoped and more. Weekend in

Brussels The unofficial capital of Europe... and for good reason! STAY

When in Brussels! Enjoy a luxurious stay at the Royal Windsor hotel – it exudes class and sophistication. You can indulge yourself in the history of the building as well as feasting your eyes upon some of the finest art work Brussels has to offer (www.warwickhotels.com/royalwindsor). It’s the kind of place you will be longing to return to – a home away from home (www.thedominican.be).

that will cover the entire duration of your weekend. Take a relaxing stroll through the most famous square in the city, which is the location for the famous Grand Palace. As one of the most historic and beautiful buildings in Brussels, it's a must! Top tip – visit the palace at night. It will be less busy and has more of a relaxing atmosphere (it also makes for a great photograph)! If art is something that you are interested in there are many galleries dotted around Brussels. Whether you prefer classical art or are more of a modern art fan, this city has art hiding around every corner. A favourite with the locals is the A.L.I.C.E Art Gallery (www.alicebxl.com) as it is a popular host for a number of contemporary exhibitions. It is managed by friendly and welcoming staff, so even if you aren't art savvy, you can still feel comfortable experiencing the artistic culture this diverse city has to offer. Brussels is known for its surreal monuments. Located on Rue Charles Buls is the Mannekin Pis (www.manneken-pis.com), a popular attraction that is surrounded by trinket shops and a variety of desirable restaurants. This comical monument of a naked boy is the centrepiece of many events and is a national symbol for Brussels. Be involved in the hustle and bustle of the city before retiring to your hotel which can only be a stone’s throw away.

EAT

For a peaceful retreat that is just around the corner from the Mannekin Pis, Le Cercle des Voyageurs (www.lecercledesvoyageurs.com) welcomes travelers from all walks of life. The menu is sure to appeal to you as it offers a diverse menu sourced from all over the globe. So, sit back relax and indulge.

DRINK

The B in Brussels of course stands for Beer. You cannot visit the city without testing out some of the finest beers Belgium has to offer. For something a little different, visit La Porte Noire (www.laportenoire.be). As you enter through the iron gate and walk down the entrance stairs, a retreat full of beer awaits. This red brick building is the perfect location as it offers a dark and lively atmosphere unlike any other.

leave this bustling city.

RELAX

Take a breather from the endless venturing around the city and visit one of the city’s most acclaimed spas. Spasiba (www.spasiba.be) is a spa for body and mood that will fully relax and revive you for the day ahead. Choose from an array of generic treatments, or a more tailored one to suit your personal needs.

SHOP

A city break would not be complete without a well-deserved shopping trip. Avenue Louise is one of the major thoroughfares of the city, home to a number of top designer shops such as Chanel, Armani and Dior. If designer isn't your thing and you prefer shopping high street, venture to Rue Neuve in the city centre, which is jam packed full of your favouritie shops and brands sure to offer you a dose of retail therapy. It's time to start planning your itinerary!

If beer isn't your thing there are plenty of other exclusive bars to visit such as L'Archiduc (www.archiduc.net), an art decostyle cocktail bar that has its own personal art gallery and live music events that will make you not want to

Myles Davies experiences travel as it should be: relaxing, enjoyable and unhurried

A

s a writer I get sent on some interesting assignments to say the least. Being of a younger age, with a slightly ageing thought process on the luxuries of travel, not liking to be hurried and certainly loving a large degree of style, I was pleasantly surprised by this assignment. Over the years the waterways of the world have catered for a huge amount of travellers across the globe. As travel became quicker and people’s time became more precious, there was a certain something lost from the art of travel. Now it feels like you get herded like cattle through an airport terminal: shoes

78

off, bag scanned and ‘next please’ ringing in your ear. The lovely guys at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines invited us on a mini cruise to Amsterdam from Dover and it has really opened my eyes to what I hope will be a long term love affair with the sea. Once parked up in Dover and transferred directly to the passenger terminal, the adventure began. A porter took our bags as soon as we arrived at the terminal entrance; the next time we saw them they were on our bed waiting to be unpacked.

Boarding started at 5pm and was a delightfully smooth process – no lengthy queues and no having to take your shoes off at security. Once on board we were shown to our room to freshen up and then made our way to the safety briefing. We have all been party to too many of these time absorbing (yet very important) briefings on airplanes, but not on this ship. The Braemer (one of the four from the Fred. Olsen fleet) had many lounge areas and muster points which made for a really interesting setting for the safety briefing. We were handed a life jacket, given time to put it on, tighten it and were then

led out onto the deck. Here, the crew took us to the lifeboat. Once the team went over what to do in an emergency, we were then at liberty to enjoy all that the fantastic ship has to offer. We attended the drinks reception in the observatory lounge and watched the waves pass by, whilst sipping on White Russians. We felt transported back to a time when travel was a luxury and part of the holiday in itself. Our suite was surprisingly spacious with an en-suite and balcony. Watching the ship leave port and admiring the horizon, we felt totally

calm – the feeling of the wind in your hair and the open sea in front of you. Magical. For dinner we had a choice of four fantastic restaurants, from à la carte to buffet-style eating we never had a hard choice picking what we wanted. Once you reach your destination there is a selection of the most excellent shore excursions that will delight, with local guides who can really immerse you in the local culture and history. With fantastic food, amazing service, great evening entertainment and wonderful

company, the art of travel has certainly not been lost with Fred. Olsen. Great destinations are available far and wide, from shorter mini cruise breaks to around the world cruises. Fred. Olsen really do cater for everything. Whenever I look to travel abroad again, I will look to the team at Fred. Olsen to get me on my way. I am a total convert and cannot wait to get back out to sea. Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas

Mike Pickup experiences Anthem of the Seas, a ground-breaking ship with world class technology was ready to dismiss Anthem of the Seas as just a ship-load of gimmicks. However, from the moment we arrived at the Southampton cruise terminal, Anthem worked hard at changing my mind.

I

with computer tablets checked us in where we stood. A green stamp on our documents and a quick scan of the barcode was all we needed to board the ship ,where officers and crew were lined up to welcome us aboard.

of the biggest cruise ships afloat, it is divided into many areas so, whilst spacious, the space never overwhelms. Add to that a choice of eighteen places to dine and you begin to understand why big can be beautiful.

Gone were the queues for check-in desks. Instead, a group of welcoming staff armed

My first impression of the inside of the Anthem was that it is brilliantly designed. Although one

Our cabin was roomy with loads of hanging and storage space, a hospitality tray, flat screen TV and sofa. The queen-size bed was extremely comfortable, and I wish we could have taken home the pillows – they were just great. Technology is cleverly used to enhance guests’ experiences. For example, cruisers on a budget tend to book inside cabins. On Anthem the blank walls of the inside cabins are replaced by huge screens linked to TV cameras on the outside of the ship, thereby creating virtual balcony cabins. Whilst technology also features in the entertainment venues to create stunning backdrops to performances, perhaps its most engaging use is the Bionic Bar. Identify yourself to one of the available tablets, then choose a cocktail or create one yourself from the list of ingredients. Watch as a robot collects some ice and the ingredients from a vast range of optics; a quick shake and your drink is poured into a glass which slides forward for you to

take. It probably attracts more sightseers than customers as the robots have an almost human quality and, if not busy, will dance to the background music. Another innovation is Seaplex which, on our first visit, was used for Dodgem cars and on the next, in part a basketball court and in part a circus where passengers could try out a flying trapeze. Out on deck there is a sky diving simulator and North Star. This is a pod similar to that on the London Eye, which is raised to 100ft above the deck. It can be used for sightseeing or booked for special events such as weddings. Need to chill out? There are outdoor pools and Jacuzzis and another pool with a sliding glass roof. You can also relax in the calming adultsonly two-deck high solarium with cascading pools and palm trees. For younger ones there are kids clubs and a teens-only area which is supervised until the early hours of the

morning. So good are they that parents may have problems persuading their kids to spend time with the family Various entertainment venues include the Royal Theatre which holds over 1000 people. We saw ‘We Will Rock You’ and it was one of the finest shows we have ever seen in any theatre, on land or sea. When it’s time for dinner there are eighteen options, of which the buffet, three cafes, a pizzeria and six restaurants are included in the fare. At extra cost, speciality restaurants include Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver, Izumi’s Japanese restaurant, and Wonderland. This you have to see and experience, but if I tell you that the menu is blank until you brush water on it and when you lift a glass it may whisper to you, perhaps you will begin to see what I mean. The food follows in this vein. Building a great ship does not guarantee a

great holiday. Captain Claus Andersen was quick to point out that ultimately it all depends upon the crew. Their pride in being part of such a unique experience shone through in the excellence of the service on board. Of course, Anthem is a cruise ship so in addition to all its facilities, which no hotel can match, it calls at a new place most days. Exploring all the destinations and trying out all that the ship has to offer takes some planning, but it’s fun trying. Anthem of the Seas cruises from Southampton until 27th October when she re-locates to New York, and will run regular cruises to the Caribbean. A 13 night Canaries cruise from Southampton on 11th October calls at Vigo, Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Lisbon and Bilbao and costs from £1349 per passenger. Features include a 3.0 litre SDV6 engine with a fuel economy of 36.7 MPG, a towing capacity of 3,500kg and an obstacle clearance level of 310mm – ideal for off-road exploits. Intelligent sensors in the door mirrors indicate when water levels are near the 700mm maximum wading depth, adjustable air suspension allows for a more comfortable ride and can be raised to tackle difficult terrain, and an automatic stop/start function reduces CO2 emissions and saves fuel. Experience driving in confidence with innovative parking sensors, complemented by a surround camera system with five optional digital cameras to provide a near 360-degree view and Blind Spot Monitoring and Closing Vehicle Sensing designed to detect what the driver misses. Whether you’re venturing on a family holiday, going on a thrill-seeking vacation with friends or seeking solace with your partner, the Discovery is adaptable for all situations. Journey with up to seven people, including the driver, and you’ll still have room for luggage. Dependant on

your choice of seating options, the generous interior is configurable to suit multiple uses, with the second and third row seats folding independently of each other. Better yet, stadium seating provides unspoilt views for all passengers, and Land Rover’s legendary Command Driving Position permits the driver unparalleled views of the road ahead. Visually, the Discovery is unmistakably modern, yet the exterior presents characteristics reminiscent of the classic design. Inside the car, a leather steering wheel gestures at the high quality materials used in the vehicle and the sleek aesthetic of the driver controls and audio interface strikes the balance between form and function. With over 200 international awards to its name, the Discovery is renowned for its versatility, superior safety features and forward-thinking design. City Slicker Say hello to the third generation of the Honda Jazz family, outclassing its predecessors with added space, new technologies and thoughtful interior design

T

he highly successful Honda Jazz series welcomes a new recruit: the 2015 Jazz. Built on the strong reputation of its antecedents, the all-new Jazz presents itself as the city slicker’s companion, boasting larger dimensions, advanced safety and infotainment technologies, and a powerful and efficient 1.3 litre i-VTEC petrol engine from the brand’s Earth Dreams Technology series.

of furniture from store to home or even doing your weekly shop, the new Jazz has reasonable space for any day-to-day activity. The boot space has been increased by 17 litres to 354 litres with the rear seats in use, and a massive 897 litres with the seats folded. Front seat occupants can enjoy an extra 30mm of shoulder room, while rear passengers are treated to 115mm more leg room.

With a wheelbase extended by 30mm and the body lengthened by 95mm, the new Jazz is proportionally larger than the previous generation model; however, the car abides by Honda’s ‘man maximum, machine minimum’ design concept, which aims to maximise the space for the driver and passengers, whilst minimising the space utilised by the car.

A seven-inch touchscreen is situated in the centre of the dashboard, presenting the new in-car infotainment system, Honda Connect, for a truly hands-on experience. The Androidbased platform offers car-specific apps, including Bluetooth, FM radio, Mirrorlink and optional Garmin-powered GPS. Akin to the interface of a modern smartphone, Honda Connect can be used to surf music, news, podcasts and audio books through the ‘Aha’ app, display vehicle information such as fuel

economy and journey time, and even connect users to social media feeds and locationbased services – ideal for times when you’re driving around to find a place to eat! Navigating those tight city-street parking spaces is made easier with a rear-view safety camera that projects ‘dynamic guidelines’ onto the touchscreen to indicate the path that the car will take when reversing. In addition, every Jazz sold in Europe will be equipped with Honda’s City-Brake Active system; specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents, the system will scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected. Other safety features include an Intelligent Speed Limiter that gently slows the car to the speed limit detected by the Traffic Sign Recognition System, and a Lane Departure Warning to alert the driver when the car deviates from its lane without indicating. The new Honda Jazz will be available from £13,495 and will arrive in showrooms in early September 2015. To visit your nearest showroom, head to John Banks Honda, Honda House, Felixstowe Road, Ipswich, Suffolk IP10 0DE.

MOTORING

TEST Myles Davies test drives the jaw dropping decadent BMW M4 Coupe

F

ollowing on from my love affair with the BMW i8 in the May issue of EAUX, when I got the call to travel back to my friends at BMW, needless to say, I was very excited to find out that I’d be taking the new M4 out for a spin.

Feeling equally at home on long open roads as it does on small, winding country roads, the M4 handles like a dream, sticking to the road without a hint of slip. Turn off traction control and this car then caters for every element of your favorite drive.

The M4 is a delight to drive; the colour combinations available and very reasonable price means that this car moves up my list of must-haves. Rip roaring speeds and head turning noise makes this one of the most desirable cars that I have driven for a long time.

It’s not hard to understand why BMW is considered the driver’s brand of choice. For a road car, the M4 is as race ready as you could possibly hope for: the throaty sound of the car as it accelerates; the pop of the exhaust; the rush of the acceleration. The impressive 3.0 litre M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine boasts an acceleration speed of 0-62 in 4.1 seconds and leaves you wanting more, more, more!

I always consider the practicalities of the car for the day-to-day drive, so with that in mind, while the boot space is limited due to the coupe element, there is enough space for a pushchair. With ISOFIX built in as standard you can trust that your little prince or princess will be as safe as houses, allowing you to enjoy the open road and try to avoid those pesky traffic jams we are all so used to sitting in on the A12 and A14.

So are you looking to buy yourself a new car any time soon? Are you torn between two cars and not sure where to go? Consider getting yourself over to Cooper BMW, www.cooperbmw.co.uk, 01206 751100, and book yourself in for a test drive – you will not be disappointed. This is a car that leaves a smile on the face of even the most serious road users.

With the impressive dashboard configuration, windscreen projected speedo and bucket seats, this car really does have it all.

When it’s time to jet set, bigger cases will need to go on the back seats, just be careful not to mark the leather.

Hit the accelerator, hear the engine roar and look around at everyone else’s envy as you drive this beautiful beast down the road. BMW, we salute you.

The new ŠKODA Superb

T

he launch of the groundbreaking new ŠKODA Superb is only weeks away, bringing with it the promise that choosing between style and space is now a thing of the past. With an award win already in the bag, word on the street is this all-new version offers more for your money than ever... The ŠKODA designers responsible for the new Superb were set a clear task: to create a car revolutionary in terms of both technological sophistication and style. The result is an effortlessly refined, dynamic, clean-cut silhouette with more presence and

clarity than ever before. It’s premium design at its best. Hailed by WhatCar? as “hard to beat”, you’re looking at a motoring icon in the making. But it’s not all grilles and no thrills; longer and wider than its predecessor, the new Superb boasts even more room inside,
while being lighter, more frugal and better equipped. Featuring the latest iteration of ŠKODA’s infotainment system, the centre console is packed full of useful tech to make life that bit easier. DAB is standard on all trim levels and SmartLink, which mirrors your smartphone screen, is standard from SE, with Business models boasting satnav, Bluetooth and a 6.5in touchscreen. Pitted against its nearest competitors in a recent WhatCar? test, the Superb proved itself to be head and shoulders above the rest, easily outclassing the Ford Mondeo and Volvo S60 to earn the maximum five stars. As well as being the quickest of the three to hit 60mph from a standstill, the Superb was praised for it’s impressive handling, optimal driving position for visibility and, of course, a vast internal cabin. The Superb also continues to dominate with boot space. With its rear seats in place it has a huge, square, 625 litres. That’s more than enough to swallow a few golf clubs, two large suitcases or, given its new status as WhatCar? Family Car Of The Year 2015, a couple of pushchairs and more. Smart, accessible, connected and perfect for both business and pleasure, the new ŠKODA Superb now truly lives up to its name. Contract Hire rates start from as little as £187 per month, and with CO2 emissions as low as 105 g/km, 20% lower fuel consumption than it’s predecessor, and a BiK

tax rate starting from just 18%, it truly is a phenomenal amount of car for the money. Experience the new generation of saloon for yourself by requesting a demonstration at your local ŠKODA retailer; space will never be the same again.

Feature Creatures Anthony Knights of Feature Creatures speaks to EAUX about the latest trend in garden art

W

icker garden furniture and rusty hanging baskets are a thing of the past when it comes to garden décor. Feature Creatures is run by Anthony Knights based near Ipswich in Suffolk create unique steel sculptures of all shapes and sizes that are tailor made for you and your garden. We spoke to Anthony to find out about why these bespoke steel designs have become so popular and all about the process from steel to sculpture. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEAS FOR YOUR FEATURE CREATURES?

96

FEATURECREATURES.indd 96

I was introduced to the t-rex by someone who thought I could include it in one of my garden designs! I fell in love with them and after many talks and planning I decided to start selling them. I come up with the ideas and designs; Some are started with pen and paper and others with the use of CAD. A local company manufactures them for me from metal. We have just started to play around with the designs in MDF and perspex. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING YOUR FEATURE CREATURES? It all started about three years ago. It has taken longer than I would have liked but now we have the barn to display them in and sales

are really picking up. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CREATURE SO FAR AND WHY? I love the pig and the dog which are two of the most popular designs – the dog reminds me of my grandma’s pet! ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL DESIGNS IN THE PIPELINE? We have been working with a local design company on lots of new creatures and moving onto other garden products such as garden furniture, fire pits and a Christmas tree which should all be on display in the barn by the end of August.

send an order to the company to cut them out and assemble it. We deliver the smaller creatures ourselves but for some of the larger ones we have a company with a hiab lorry to deliver it for us but we will always be there to help install it. If it is an entirely new creature then it takes about six weeks as we have to do the design work, make a small model and have it turned into the file we need to have it cut out. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR SHOP OPENING AT FRIDAY STREET FARM SHOP? Our new shop is called the-barn.co and we are

based just behind the fantastic Friday Street Farm Shop in Farnham. The idea for the shop originally came from needing somewhere to display the Feature Creatures and has now grown into a great collaboration of modern, mid-century and vintage furniture, homeware and sculptures set in a rustic outside-in experience. We have a great team made up of family and traders offering something for every taste. The shop has been open since late March and we are open 10am till 5.30pm every day. Want to find out more about how you can have one of these eye-catching sculptures in your own garden? Visit www.featurecreatures.co.uk

t all started with cushions. Six years ago, Julia from Nelson Design UK created a set of bespoke cushions for Joyce’s home. Fast-forward to 2015 and Julia is again on hand to help Joyce revamp her home: ‘I knew Julia had the expertise and ability to get the fabrics that I desired.’ It was one particular trip to Selfridges that was the catalyst for the start of the revamp. Joyce was walking through the home interior department when a beautiful floral linen fabric from Designers Guild caught her eye. ‘It was love at first sight and in that instant Joyce knew that was the fabric for her. It has a very elegant retro feel that will prove timeless,’ explains Julia. ‘I felt like the décor was outdated with its yellow and blue colour scheme and the antique furniture,’ Joyce explained. Using the Designers Guild fabric as the starting point, Julia and Joyce worked together to develop an

Joyce Cooper explains how Julia from Nelson Design UK helped her transform her home elegant, calm, Scandinavian scheme for the bedroom. This was followed by the dressing room, second bedroom – which also featured Designers Guild fabric – hallway and finally the living space. The original plan for building work was to remove the fireplace and copper canopy. Local builder Mike Chester (07760 756 772) was brought in and ‘from one consultation we were almost knocking the bungalow down and completely redoing it. We added in bi-fold doors across the whole of the back wall, removed two walls and installed a wood burner’. Julia was there to advocate for Joyce, to get her ideas and requirements across to the builders and furniture designers and to ensure sure she got everything she wanted and more. ‘We wanted the space to have an elegant, modern luxury feel but also be homely and attainable,’ said Joyce. The whole property has a Scandinavian feel, with a calming grey colour

scheme and plenty of texture throughout. I asked Joyce how she felt she benefitted from having Julia on board: ‘I think you end up with a wiser choice; you’ve someone to bounce your ideas off – someone who has all the industry knowledge. Someone who can take what you want, add their expertise, introduce you to new things that you’d have never known about and that then leads to having something better than you’d ever imagined.’ Joyce goes on to say how she loves that she can now look out onto her garden and enjoy it lit up at night. ‘A number of my favourite items were used in the design. From the Arne Jacobsen wallpaper, the Iittala glass vases and lights and the Hans J Wegner wishbone chairs,’ explained Julia. She helped as much and as little as needed as Joyce already had furniture that needed working around. ‘It was very much a joint effort’, said Joyce. And how did she enjoy the process from start to finish? ‘I would happily do it all over again if I could.’

passion for turning old furniture into something desirable is something many people have these days, with the popularity of shabby chic still at an all time peak, but Kate Noakes takes a wholly different approach. Without a drop of off-white paint in sight, Kate creates strong, statement pieces from old furniture by inlaying sheet metal into gesso. We sat down with Kate for a coffee to find out more‌

WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN FURNITURE AND DESIGN BEGIN?

My background is in sculpture, and after completing a Fine Art degree I worked on exhibitions, public commissions and as Artist in Residence, using the traditional blacksmith skills of welding and forging mild steel. My transition from Fine Art to design was a gradual process which started when I began to experiment with gesso and metal on wall

panels, sculptural vessels and platters, and saw its potential for reinventing existing furniture. I developed the process of re-veneering using designs cut from sheet metal which is then inlaid with the gesso. During this time I found my love of design, and since launching my first collection of furniture in 2012 at London Design Week I haven't looked back.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? My original ethos was to turn an unloved piece of furniture into a desirable and functional object once again. Reuse and environmental responsibility are an important part of my working practice, and I extend this where possible to the materials used in the production of my work. The inspiration for my designs comes from many sources, including everyday objects, industrial design and architecture, as well as paintings.

HOW DO YOU FIND BEING A MAKER IN SUFFOLK? I live and work in Suffolk and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. It offers the solitude I need as a maker, but it is also easy to get to London, where most of my work is sold at the moment.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE REGION AND WHY? My favourite spot is Bradley Wood. It is a place I pass most mornings while walking my greyhound, and it’s a place I often walk to if I need a break from work. It has a view that takes in the village and church – a great place to sit and think. SEMI CIRCLE LINE CONSOLE TABLE

WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE FROM START TO FINISH? I start by sourcing the furniture which I then recondition and quite often renovate. I never use pieces that only need of a bit of Danish oil to make them desirable again, but rather pieces that need reinventing. I then re-veneer them by inlaying the sheet metal with gesso. It is then varnished to achieve a durable finish.

WHAT OTHER DESIGNERS FILL YOU WITH INSPIRATION?

SHARD CABINET POPPY SIDEBOARD

Eileen Gray, Lucienne Day and Charles and Ray Eames are great sources of inspiration.

DOES MOST OF YOUR WORK COME FROM BESPOKE COMMISSIONS? I do a lot of work for interior designers as well as private commissions. I also often have pieces in The Old Cinema in Chiswick. Together with sister company ALLBUILD Construction and Property Maintenance which offers a full range of building services, you can be assured of great service from planning through to completion.

Building or extending your home is not an easy process but the team at ALLBUILD Planning and Design ensures that it is as simple and stress-free as it possibly can be. Clients can expect an initial survey to be taken, with a turn around of two weeks in order for the team to produce the plans for the build – they offer an incredibly thorough process from the get go.

‘Sometimes, as homeowners, we do not have a clear vision of what we would like the finished result to be,’ explains Shane. ‘We listen to our clients’ rough ideas and then give them cost effective designs that coincide with their initial thoughts. With ALLBUILD Planning and Design a personal service is guaranteed; we will not just focus on the build itself but also look at the carpentry, roofing, windows and doors and even the inner workings like the plumbing and heating.’

Blind date Glasswells introduces a bespoke blind service to its Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich stores

014 saw the introduction of legislation incorporating a change to continuous loop cords on blinds; it is now a legal requirement for all new blinds to be equipped or installed with concealed or tension cords, or be completely cordless. If a blind is designed with a continuous loop cord, it must now hang at least 1.5m above the floor, or have a chain break which will fail when 6kg or more of pressure is applied. This change provoked a growing demand for bespoke blind solutions, inspiring East Anglia’s largest independent department store, Glasswells, to introduce a brand new bespoke blind service in its Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds stores. The service, supplied by Illumin8, provides customers with a wide choice of designs, but also peace of mind when considering safety and installation factors. Sarah Woodvine, Buyer at Glasswells, states that Illumin8 supplies ‘a large range of blind designs and models, which means that we really can find the perfect blind to dress even the most difficult window, even bi-fold doors’. With hundreds of styles, fabrics and designs to choose from, Glasswells should expect a high amount of interest from homeowners in the area. Their studio installation displays the blinds at full-length, allowing customers to visualise how the blinds would appear in context. This also offers the opportunity for clients to operate the blinds for themselves and test out whether the design would be appropriate for their home environment. In acknowledgement of the new safety standards, Glasswells are also offering the choice to motorise certain styles of blinds to make them completely safe for children in the home. Motorised blinds are safe by design, as they eliminate the need for continuous loop cords and can be operated by the push of a button. This design comes complete with a wireless controller, which can be operated from a distance, allowing the client to regulate the device as needed. Glasswells’ fantastic team are equipped to provide a free window measuring service, and they are always on hand in store to answer any technical questions or help match up fabrics and textures. Once a customer has selected their blind design, they can expect their order to be ready in ten working days – a hugely competitive turnaround. To speak to a specialist or to browse the collections, visit Glasswells at Glasswells Retail Park, Ranelagh Road, Ipswich, IP2 0AQ, or Newmarket Road, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3TU.

‘It’s becoming increasingly popular to entertain at home rather than going out, so interiors are becoming much more integral to this idea of hosting. The home is less of a retreat and more of a centre of connection with friends and family. People want authentic, storied pieces to make their home an inspiring place to hang out. It could be a great sofa that everyone can spread out on or a really unique dining table; pieces that spark a conversation. Our new Autumn/Winter collection has a very distinctive energy; the shapes and materials we’ve used are bold and dynamic, but they’re also cosy and inviting at the same time.’ Timothy Oulton, UK designer

Samuel Shultar of Samuel David Construction explains why extending or converting your house can make it into the home you’ve always wanted

Making big changes to your home can be a daunting prospect but with a good dose of professional advice and personal service you can ensure the process is as smooth as possible. These days, space is a luxury and the quick fix is to pack up and move house entirely but why not make the most out of your existing space? There are many options when it comes to conversions such as converting your loft, your garage or even your unused conservatory.

With help from a professional like Samuel David Construction this daunting prospect will become a pleasurable experience that will see your house transform into a home with an injection of style and elegance.

Owner, Samuel Shultar, says that ‘a well thought out extension will undoubtedly add value to your home’ so not only will it provide a luxurious space for you and your family but once the time comes to move on, your property will be worth more than its original selling price – a smart and worthwhile investment.

If you are happy with the overall space that your property offers but you’d like a restorative revamp Samuel can also assist you in renovating your home, working closely with you to fully understand your vision and help you to create it. An open plan property is all the rage and looks set to be a trend for years to come, and for good reason; it can entirely open up your home and make it look more spacious without having to do any major construction work.

Throughout the entire process, whether it be converting your loft, renovating an entire floor of your property or simply knocking down a wall, Samuel David Construction promises to be with you every step of the way to offer personal and professional advice that will suit both you and your property.

Got it covered… n 1985 Henry Wilden and John Masters launched Suffolk Carpet Weavers in Ipswich. 2015 and the business is now celebrating 30 successful years trading. The business is known across Suffolk for manufacturing quality wool twist pile and bespoke carpets. Until 2011 they were made on-site but a move to Martlesham into a bigger and better showroom was needed and manufacturing moved to Milton Keynes.

of self-employed fitters for many years.

The carpets are made of high quality British wool (80%) and nylon (20%). Suffolk Carpet Weavers also deal with nearly all of the major manufacturers, meaning there is a carpet to suit all budgets from £6 a square metre to £250.

John’s son, John Paul, has now joined in the running of the business. ‘He has been on the fitting side for 11 years, but in the last year he has started working in the shop on sales and organising fittings’, explains John.

The team are happy to advise customers and there’s no pressure to buy. If you have a spare piece of carpet you’d like to be edged and turned into a rug, Suffolk Carpet Weavers can do it on site. They also offer premium vinyl floor tiles in wood or stone, which are proving very popular at the moment. Fitting of both carpets and flooring is also available – the business has been using the same group

‘We’ve just revamped the showroom to give us more display area, because the business is growing so well’, explains owner, John Masters. As well as offering bespoke carpets of all different colours and patterns, the company makes a large selection of rugs. ‘That is a growing part of the business’, he added.

You can visit Suffolk Carpet Weavers, Top Street, Martlesham, Suffolk, IP12 4RB. Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-1pm. Closed Sundays and bank holidays. For more information, visit www.suffolkcarpetweavers.co.uk

More than 80% of business comes from returning customers or recommendations, and John puts that down to his and Henry’s knowledge and their ability to say ‘yes’ to most people’s needs: ‘we’ve got busier and busier over the last few years’, he adds. ‘Business has been going from strength to strength since we moved into larger premises. We’d like to thank all of our customers for supporting us over the years’.

n the heart of Sweden sits the small village of Harad on the Lule river. This is the home of Treehotel, a concept designed to offer a very unique experience. Made up of a selection of seperate treerooms which act as different hotel rooms in the middle of nature, Treehotel offers you the chance to enjoy serenity, rejuvenate and be at one with nature. Founded by Swedish duo Britta and Kent, Treehotel is inspired by the film The Tree Lover by Jonas Selberg Nature, a philosophical film story about the significance of trees for human beings. Ecological values, comfort and modern design combine in the stunning Swedish countryside for an exciting adventure experience. Each treeroom is designed to promote maximum sustainability. Suspended between four and six metres above the ground – not one for those scared of heights – each treeroom has incredible views of the river Lule. Every treeroom is built using materials and

construction techniques that have as little environmental impact as possible. No trees are cut down or damaged to make space for the rooms and the materials used in the construction come from local companies wherever possible.

To find out more about Treehotel, visit www.treehotel.se

Careful attention is paid to ensure each room is well insulated and features eco-friendly underfloor heating for those chilly evenings. In-keeping with the eco-credentials, the electricity to each room is supplied locally by green hydroelectric power. Not only this but each unique treeroom features a combustion toilet which is powered by electricity and very water efficient. All wastewater is collected and emptied daily. Dragonfly is one of the largest rooms, functioning as a conference space as well as private suite. Panoramic windows face the valley and offer spectacular views. Other unique rooms include The Tree Sauna, The UFO, The Blue Cone, The Bird’s Nest, The Mirrorcube and The Cabin.

Grange

Alex Leader, head of Savills new homes team in Ipswich, looks at how one leading national housebuilder has used years of experience to create new homes with flair and forward- thinking design that have proved exceptionally popular with buyers

P

urdis Grange is an exclusive development of 24 luxury houses by Taylor Wimpey set within the much sought--after and stunning surroundings of Purdis, within striking distance of Ipswich Golf Club and Purdis Heath. Taylor Wimpey, along with local architect Martin Last from Last & Tricker, has created a collection of beautiful new homes inspired by the space and natural beauty of the Suffolk coastline, as well as the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The result has captured the mood of the market. All but three of the houses are now sold, with the majority of buyers downsizing from larger Suffolk properties into the town market. The

scheme has been popular with those looking for a spacious, detached home and the convenience of a newly built property. New build homes have really caught the attention of house hunters and seem to be drawing in a broader range of buyers than ever before. This is probably because they tick so many boxes, low maintenance being a particularly prized attribute. The design of new homes has also gone from strength to strength, resulting in a significant boost to that all-important kerb appeal. The properties at Purdis Grange are all individually designed and traditional in form. External materials include top quality facing bricks, coloured renders and pre-finished

boarding. Roof coverings are either clay or traditional slate and the windows are finished in either white or cream. Internally the specification is very desirable and the houses are designed to reflect modern living, with spacious sitting rooms and kitchen/dining areas. High levels of glazing include stunning bi-folding doors allowing gardens to become part of the house and vice versa. Bedrooms are generous in size and most include an ensuite facility. Only three properties now remain at Purdis Grange. The five bedroom detached houses are priced between ÂŁ635,000 and ÂŁ720,000. B

locks Solicitors has been a key provider of legal services to Ipswich and Suffolk for over 125 years. As Ipswich and Suffolk has changed and grown, so has Blocks to ensure that it can continue to provide services to match both the growing needs of individuals and businesses within the local area. The firm’s reputation spreads far and wide. At Blocks providing outstanding customer service is paramount. ‘Quite simply we are in the privileged position of being instructed to carry out important legal work for our clients and we naturally wish to repay that trust through great service’ said Graham Mead, the Head of Litigation. ‘Whether we are preserving assets and ensuring that they are left to the people that you love, helping you through a difficult divorce or acting for an entrepreneur with their start-up or an experienced farmer with a long established enterprise, Blocks are here to be your right hand and to serve. We have a track record of this and the firm would not have survived for over 125 years, had this not been its ethos’.

This view is seconded by the firm’s Managing Partner, Gerry Field: ‘We pride ourselves on being accessible to our clients from Partner to secretarial level. While other firms are all about chargeable hours and law as a business, we put the client first. We work hard on continuously improving our service, be that by way of being avant-garde in the manner by which we offer our services through the use of technology or by simply keeping our finger on the pulse of what our clients require’. The firm practises in all main areas including agriculture, company commercial, commercial property, employment, commercial and property litigation, property litigation and for the individual, domestic conveyancing, family and divorce, wills, probate and trusts, powers of attorney and court of protection applications and tax planning. ‘Our reputation stretches nationally and we do a lot of work for London clients, particularly those that have an East Anglian connection. However, having said that, Suffolk remains our area of focus’, said Nicola Weldon, the Partner who heads the firm’s private client team. She added: ‘whilst some may view us as a small firm, this is to our advantage. It enables us to achieve our

goals of quality service and accessibility’. ‘We have grown with Suffolk and our client base. Our clients now want a solicitors firm that can act as a single trusted advisor to handle all their needs. The relentless growth of intellectual property and technology means that we cannot rest on our laurels. We pride ourselves on being forward thinking and progressive’, explained Demelza Butler, the firm’s Family Law Partner, who is also responsible for overseeing the firm’s IT. ‘We are currently in the process of one of our largest overhauls regarding our technology’, said Frances Barker, the firm’s Employment Partner. ‘We aim to do more and more using the cloud to ensure that we can easily and quickly scale our services’. Company and Commercial Partner Andrew Fleming said: ‘Our list of blue chip clients and the return of confidence following the downturn mean that we are busier than ever – right across the firm’. We will check in with Blocks over the coming months to find out more about the firm and the services they offer.

teven Sharp is not just chairman of Collen & Clare, Imagineer London Ltd and Imagineer Events. He is also senior non-executive director of Adnams Plc, director of the Government Communications Board. Fellow of Chartered Institute of Marketing, Marketing Society and The Royal Society of Arts. Professor and Doctor of Glasgow Caledonian University and the British School of Fashion in London and New York. I think it’s fair to say he’s a man of many talents.

Becca Green speaks to Steven Sharp, chairman of Collen & Clare about his colourful career

I guess the two obvious ones are Twiggy, and the melting middle chocolate pudding. Not something you’d expect to see in the same sentence! Actually, the pudding came first. A piece of TV advertising featuring a simple Sunday lunch, narrated with the sensuous Irish tones of Dervla Kerwan. As the pudding splits and oozes chocolate, Dervla oozes the words ‘This is not just food, this is M&S food’. A phrase which led to the opening of another factory for the puddings.

Market, I was up a ladder at the former Groom’s Bakery at 6am cleaning the windows!

HOW DID YOU ENTER THE WORLD OF MARKETING? I’m dyslexic so my education was not a normal one. I didn’t go to university but studied catering and hotel management. I’m a bit of a foodie and loved the industry and the people but early on I took an interest in marketing; I was drawn to its creativity and power as a business tool. I see advertising as art but also as a commercial benefit to an organisation.

Sometime later, my wife, Lesley and I were having lunch in The Crown in Southwold when Twiggy walked in with her husband, Leigh Lawson. Lesley recognised her immediately, which was surprising since she was very windswept and was wearing a woolly hat and pig tails. She went on to star in the first clothing commercial which was a dressing-up box idea with Twiggy and her friends, Erin O’Conner, Laura Bailey and Noemie Lenoir.

CAN YOU SUM UP YOUR CAREER IN THREE WORDS? Lucky, lucky, lucky!

My first break was to join a gourmet food company called Alveston Kitchens. It was here that my boss was a great marketing guy called Mitch Fisher who was my first mentor.

AS A LOYAL CUSTOMER AND UNOFFICIAL MENTOR TO COLLEN & CLARE WHAT INITIATED THE JUMP TO CHAIRMAN? Lesley and I were fans of Collen & Clare right from the start in their little shop and watched them grow into the now familiar store in the marketplace. Vanessa (Collen) and Clare had a great eye and created a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy shopping.

The first part of my career was spent in food, culminating in my role as marketing director for ASDA. The next part was in fashion with a plethora of high street names from Debenhams to TopShop. Finally, the two industries came together at Marks & Spencer that is uniquely divided 50/50 into food and fashion. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR LONG AND PRESTIGIOUS CAREER AS M&S MARKETING CHIEF? I joined M&S to defend a bid by Phillip Green with my friend and colleague, Stuart, now Lord Rose of Monewden. The deal to join M&S was cooked up in the kitchen of his house there. During the defense I used the term ‘Your M&S’ – it’s now embedded in the hearts and minds of the British public. The phrase stuck and became the branding. Once the bid was won, we set about transforming the business. My job was to rekindle the nation’s love affair with M&S and to get the customers back with us. WHAT IN YOUR CAREER ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG ASPIRING MARKETING AND PR AGENTS? The world of marketing is much more diverse than might appear. It offers opportunities in everything from research and analytics to creativity and production so there is massive scope for an exciting, rewarding career.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU AND COLLEN & CLARE? Consolidation. We have been busy expanding our reach further into Suffolk and Norfolk and literally to the world online. For now, we’re enjoying getting to know our new customers and making sure our loyal friends are getting the exciting clothing and the warm welcome they have come to expect from us.

When Clare needed to make a lifestyle change, Vanessa needed a new partner and I was delighted to join her. We developed a new plan to grow the business in its East Anglian heartland and opened another store in Aldeburgh. More recently we’ve added a larger one in Burnham Market and relaunched our website, www.collenandclare.com. All of these ventures have been really well received by local customers and visitors alike, whilst our Southwold store remains our flagship and goes on from strength to strength. My role as Chairman is to develop the business and support Vanessa and her team. I have been known to work on the shop floor and visit suppliers on buying trips but I tend to leave that to the experts! And it’s not all glamour. On opening day in Burnham

Information, Investments

& Integrity James Wright, IFA, talks about understanding your investment charges

expected to maintain a set level of technical training in order to provide you with informed advice on all the options and services available to you. A restricted adviser on the other hand, might have specialist knowledge of a specific product or products, but will not be able to provide you with advice regarding all the investment products and services available to you – which could mean that you miss out on an investment which is right for your needs.

ince the introduction of the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) early in January 2013, the way in which financial advisers are allowed to charge for advice has changed significantly. Under RDR rules, financial advisers are now expected to be transparent and clear in the way that they charge for their services and are no longer allowed to earn commission from investment fund providers by recommending their specific products or services to clients. In addition, the introduction of the new rules in 2013 meant that a number of advisers previously advertising themselves as ‘independent’ had to change the way they advertised their services. The RDR rules which are enforced by the Financial Conduct Authority, state that your adviser must tell you whether he or she is operating as an ‘independent‘ or ‘restricted’ adviser. Understanding the difference is critical to ensuring that you receive the right investment advice. An independent financial adviser is exactly that: he or she has access to an open market of investment products and solutions and is

Another of the key changes to come out of the review is the way in which Financial Advisers are allowed to charge for their services. On investments made after January 2013, financial advisers are no longer permitted to receive commission from fund providers in return for recommending or selling specific products or services. In fact, it is now a requirement for your adviser to agree with you how the fee will be charged, in advance of any work being carried out. This means you should be able to clearly see the costs attached to each level of the management of your portfolio. When considering what investment you should take up, or what level of advice you require, your adviser should explain to you at the very outset what fees you will incur. For example, one of the most common investment portfolios recommended by IFAs in the UK, is the collective investment. A collective investment is one where the funds of a number of individual investors are pooled together in order to create one larger investment which in turn, could achieve a higher return. In the case of collective funds, there will often be an annual cost attached to the underlying fund holdings which on average, could be anywhere between 0.07% and 1.5% of the amount invested. In addition, there may be a fee for the platform which the fund is held on and also a fee for

the adviser or stockbroker who is reviewing and managing the portfolio. It is common for an investment to incur three main charges like those outlined and a good adviser will be able to advise you how much you pay in fees so that you don’t end up paying too much. Such reform to the way in which financial advice is regulated in the UK is critical to ensuring that you, as the client, are not overcharged and receive impartial and good quality advice and also for the industry, as better regulation means that all Financial Advisers must work with integrity and transparency. As we are all given greater control over how and where we invest our money, such as the recent Pension Freedoms, so are we seeing the number of cases of financial fraud rise dramatically. It is becoming ever more important that you get the right professional advice before making any investments and that you are kept aware of all the possible costs in advance of handing over any money. Scrutton Bland Ltd are independent financial advisers who are controlled and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We have been helping our clients to make the right investment choices for them for over 100 years. Our team of IFAs and tax professionals can advise you on finding the most appropriate investment solution for you.
