or two days during half term (Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd June 2016) the Trinity Park showground, just outside of Ipswich, will be filled with thousands of animals, competitors, local business exhibitors and show-goers, all coming together to showcase and celebrate Suffolk at its best. From rare breeds such as Red Poll cattle, Suffolk Punch horses and Suffolk rare breed sheep, to mouth-watering food and drink and the latest fashion, home and lifestyle trends, this two-day experience is one not to be missed. There isn’t another event in the county where you can spend the day watching international show jumping, while shopping for a statement piece of art and

picking up inspiration for your garden from awardwinning landscapers. Food is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the Suffolk Show and both the Adnams Food and Drink Experience Food Hall and Beach Eats area will return again in 2016. Meanwhile the East of England Co-op Cookery Theatre, which is jointly sponsored by the East of England Co-op, Adnams and the Suffolk Agricultural Association, will play host to some of Suffolk’s top chefs as they give live cooking demos. For food lovers who are looking to try something new, the Greene King and Aspalls Eat Street promises to feature exotic street food to tantalise the taste buds. Organised by the Suffolk Agricultural Association (SAA), the Show is now in its 176th year and,

although packed with luxury attractions and entertainment, it remains a traditional agricultural event at heart. Through the Show, the Suffolk Agricultural Association is keen to promote the importance of food and farming to Suffolk and encourage young people to take up a career in agriculture. It’s also one of the largest equine events in the region, with hundreds of classes featuring stunning horses as they and their riders compete to qualify for major competitions such as the London International Horse Show, Olympia and the Royal International Horse Show. There are also some fun and quirky equine events like the Shetland Grand National and the Cossack race, as well as new showcases like the ‘Challenge’; a relay featuring pony club riders, show jumpers, racers and eventers. With well-known Suffolk firms in attendance,

including Willis, Thurlow Nunn Standen and Hopkins Homes, the Show is an ideal location for Suffolk businesses, both agricultural and otherwise, to network and build relationships. The Suffolk Show is a must for families during the school holidays; under 15s receive free entry and, once inside, there are endless activities to enjoy for the big kids and little kids alike. From the unique opportunity to get close to thousands of animals, to having a go at 50 different sports for free in the Sports Village, before trying their hand at interactive experiences in the Military Zone, there really is something to suit all interests and ages. Tickets for this year’s Suffolk Show are now on sale – save £6 per ticket by purchasing in advance. Advanced tickets cost £21 and children aged under 15 go free. For more information, visit www.suffolkshow.co.uk.

TOP 10: THINGS TO SEE AND DO AT THIS YEAR’S SUFFOLK SHOW For Show Director Bill Baker, this year’s event will be particularly special for him as it’s his third and final year at the helm. Here he shares 10 of the Show’s unmissable experiences: 1. Arrive at the Show early in the morning to see hundreds of livestock being washed, set and blow-dried before they parade around the rings. 2. See some of Suffolk’s top chefs in action at the Cookery Theatre. 3. Shop ‘til you drop in the pink-carpeted Fifth Avenue, featuring luxury and bespoke fashion brands. Or take a front-row pew whilst you rest your feet and enjoy the fashion show – brand new for 2016! 4. Watch international showjumpers in action. 5. Get inspiration for your home improvement projects from top interior designers in the Lifestyle Pavilion – or, better yet, why not purchase a new home?

6. Stroll around the Food Hall while sampling the best of Suffolk’s cuisine. 7. Splash out on a Membership or Vice Presidents’ ticket package and enjoy access to a VIP tent and private ringside gardens and seating. 8. Experience the thrill of putting a Land Rover through its paces on the off road course – not for the faint-hearted! 9. Watch The Grand Parade at the end of day and see the winning livestock show off their rosettes. 10. Enjoy live music with a glass of prosecco as the sun goes down on the first day.

s much as we hate to admit it, we’re all guilty of spending too much time glued to our smartphones, tablets and computers. But for those who are keen to take a break, you’ll be pleased to know that analogue communication is fast becoming the new way to correspond with associates.

Due to the popularity of this trend, designers have found ways to make the act of writing a stylish one. From diamond encrusted caps to 24ct gold clips, your pen can say more about your personality than, say, your favourite shoes or jacket. One designer in particular who has been quick to jump on this trend is Jack Row. Debuting his first collection at Harrods in 2011, and having won prestigious awards for his stunning

designs of pens and cufflinks since, he is now one of Britain’s most prolific purveyors of iconic luxury in the form of beautiful writing instruments, which retail for up to £27,000. Here, we talk to the designer about his creative prowess, obsession with quality and his keen eye for detail.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN DESIGN? I’ve always enjoyed problem solving and I see design very much as just that. You have aesthetics, function, materials and processes, which must all seamlessly fit together. So perhaps like most designers, my inspiration for pursuing design as a career is quite selfish, really. I wanted to do what I enjoyed and felt I could be good at; though my specific design direction didn’t become apparent until I went to university.

With the recent rise in cases of large-scale cybercrime, particularly the leaking of sensitive information, the demand for non-digital interaction has taken a sharp rise amongst high profile and high net worth individuals, and rightly so.

Eschewing unsecure email, text and other online contact for the simple, albeit time consuming, act of writing, provides privacy and security for both the sender and recipient. While the evolution of our communication has been beneficial to say the least, there is something rather nostalgic about penning words on paper.

YOU STUDIED JEWELLERY AND SILVERSMITHING: DESIGN FOR INDUSTRY AT BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY – WHICH ELEMENT OF YOUR STUDIES CONTRIBUTED MOST TO YOUR CAREER? Learning specific approaches to design has contributed significantly. Turning what seems to be a hit and miss process into something structured and methodical. I also found the business and entrepreneurial element of the course invaluable. You’d be surprised how many design courses don’t inform students of how they can make a living from what they are studying. This was a major part of the DFI course.

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR YOUR FINAL PIECE AT THE END OF YOUR COURSE? My final piece was a palladium and black diamond fountain pen – it was the first pen I made!

WHO DO YOU COUNT AS YOUR INSPIRATION? Artisans in general. This (slightly altered) quote (attributed to Francis of Assisi) says it all for me: He who works with his hands is a labourer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artisan.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON DO YOU SEE USING YOUR PRODUCTS? It’s been great to have politicians, authors, artists, actors, engineers, doctors, craftspeople, designers and royalty own my work, to name a few. However, the person I see using my work is simply someone who loves the piece and enjoys using or wearing it, no matter who they are or what they do.

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING IN THE HEART OF BIRMINGHAM’S HISTORIC JEWELLERY QUARTER? It’s great to be surrounded by the history and heritage of the area. It’s also inspiring to have a few people around me who work to a similar standard. We’re a small community, everyone knows everyone and we help each other out.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’m currently working on a set of pens for a new stockist named Catherine Best, who has galleries on Guernsey and Jersey, as well as a new commission piece for bespoke watchmakers, Struthers London.

It usually takes around 6 weeks. Each piece is a labour of love.

WHAT’S THE MOST UNUSUAL BESPOKE PIECE THAT YOU’VE CREATED? That would have to be a solid, silver vampire slaying stake. It was over a foot in length and weighed nearly a kilo! I hope it’s serving its master well.

WHERE IS THE PRECIOUS METAL DESIGN INDUSTRY HEADING IN TERMS OF TECHNOLOGY? One of the most exciting developing technologies is selective laser sintering. Put simply, this is the process of directly 3D printing using a laser and powdered precious metals. The technology is not quite there yet in terms of surface finish, in my opinion, but it’s only a matter of time before the engineers have it refined and exciting new design and manufacturing opportunities are available.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Being awarded a QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) scholarship in 2013.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE ONE OF YOUR PENS FROM START TO FINISH?

College life See what’s been going on with one of Suffolk’s premier schools, Framlingham College

WELLBEING CONFERENCE AT FRAMLINGHAM COLLEGE A GREAT SUCCESS Following the Headmaster, Paul Taylor’s stated commitment to addressing mental health issues amongst the young people of East Anglia last summer, Framlingham College hosted its first Wellbeing Conference recently. With over 140 guests present in the school theatre, a range of speakers spoke about addressing the very real mental health issues amongst today’s young people. The day proved a huge success. Delegates included representatives from both the independent and maintained sectors at both junior and senior school level, with parents, school governors and local mental health practitioners also present. With mental health issues ever more prevalent in teenagers, Paul Taylor believes ‘schools must make it a priority to equip today’s generation of schoolchildren with strategies and coping mechanisms to enable them to deal with the pressures they face; pressures which are exacerbated through the parallel world of social media and the relentless drive for academic achievement’.

Claire Kelly, Director of the ‘Mindfulness in Schools Project’, opened the day with a beautifully balanced overview of Mindfulness and the benefits to schools of bringing mindfulness into the curriculum. Clinical Psychologist Dr Hazel Harrison (herself an ex-pupil at Framlingham College) took over the reins and talked passionately about building resilience in our young people, offering superb advice to school leaders on how to achieve this. Post-lunch, James Shone, author of www. icanandiam.com with his own powerful story, had the entire theatre mesmerised throughout his talk on Growth Mindset. The day was finished by Tom Caston, Deputy Head Pastoral at Framlingham College, and Mary Spink, Head of Drama at Ardingly Prep, giving practical advice on the implementation of wellbeing strategies in both junior and senior schools. Both Framlingham College and its prep school, Brandeston Hall, are looking to embed these practices across the curriculum next year and beyond. The key message from both speakers was that schools only have one chance to get this process right, so it needs to be done carefully and accurately in order to be fully sustainable.

ENGLAND HOCKEY SELECTIONS Congratulations to Abby Gooderham (u18), Molly Redgrove and Rose Winter (u16) on being selected for England Hockey Squads. All three girls have represented the 1st XI this year, which has helped their development under the guidance of Head of Hockey, Jamie Kingstone. Molly and Abby have been playing National League Hockey for Harleston Magpies alongside the College’s Senior Deputy Head, Susan Wessels. Director of Sport, Simon Sinclair said,

“Everyone at the College is incredibly proud of this achievement. To have three girls in the England Squad is a huge testament to the coaching of Jamie Kingstone. We wish them all the best in representing their country.”

How master to

the

layering

trend Fashion editor Pam Davis gives us the lowdown to the art of layering

M

y individual style incorporates one of my many fashion mantras: stylish layering works. For as long as I can remember I have always loved the art of layering and the logistics behind it. Understanding layering allowed me to create the stylish, chic look that I love so much today. With so many of us being afraid to layer our clothes out of fear of looking bigger than we actually are, so we tend to stick to what we know, which only results in us feeling uncomfortable and unstylish. While logic would lead us to believe this, it actually couldn’t be further from the truth. The key to a good, stylish outfit, whilst creating a beautiful silhouette, is nailing the art of layering.

20

2016MAY_COUTURE_PAM DAVIES.indd 20

Achieving the art of layering will allow you to expand your wardrobe and create a stylish look that will complement your body shape so you look and feel fabulous.

WHAT IS LAYERING?

There is no hard and fast rule but think about it like this: you form an outfit with multiple layers – when it’s cold you add more layers, when it’s hot, you remove them. The beauty of it is that all of the pieces should work together and separately. Although it sounds simple there may be a few pitfalls along the way, such as overdoing it on colour or being clumsy with hemlines.

WHY LAYER? With seasons transitioning so must our wardrobes, and that’s where layering comes in. Trans-seasonal layering is not so much a trend as it is a necessity in these in between months. As the temperature starts to drop or

heat up, the days of simple dressing become obsolete and we start to strategically layer our outfits to battle the multiple seasons that each day brings us. Dressing to an unpredictable forecast doesn’t have to be a nightmare; by choosing versatile pieces of clothing that can work whatever the weather, you can adapt your look throughout the day without the worry when those grey clouds come rolling in. Hello, rain! Layering doesn’t have to be boring, either; it can add interest, shape and dimension. Choosing individual pieces that work harmoniously together will create an outfit that’s both practical and stylish.

WHAT DOES IT DO? Each layer has a function and serves a purpose, and if you style pieces in the right manner, you really can’t go wrong. You

should always begin with the thinnest layer and build it up from there. Your mid layer is insulation, which will keep you warm and maintain moisture. Your last layer (the shell) should consist of outerwear, which will provide protection against the weather elements.

HOW?

1. Begin with thinner pieces A lightweight t-shirt, blouse or top is perfect for your first layer. You’re better off wearing two or three thinner layers of clothing rather than one thick piece as you can add and remove when you like. Aim for loose fitting pieces though, as clingy tops will only make you hot. 2. Keep it casual Layering is best used for casual occasions and is generally not appropriate in more formal settings. However, a layered combination can include a more sophisticated piece such as a tailored blazer.

3. Be practical We’ve all been there: we draw the curtains first thing and look out to a grey sky and puddles. Everywhere. But before quickly opting for the typical jumper-jeans-boots combo, remember that the weather is likely to change. Cue sun! So preparation is key; always prepare for each possible outcome when it comes to the weather. After all, there is nothing more annoying than being too hot when it brightens up, or worse, too cold when the sun goes in! 4. Colour me pretty In the winter months we tend to steer away from colour and opt for darker shades like black, grey and brown. But who’s to say colour is just for spring and summer? Incorporate burgundy and emerald green tones in the colder months – pinks and mauve shades will work too, as these will soften your overall look.

5. Comfort is key Wherever your mood takes you, go with it! You should always feel comfortable wearing your outfit, so make sure you can lift your arms. If this is not the case, your layering is too thick! 6. Accessorise Complete your look with accessories such as a pretty scarf or hat. This can also be where you add a splash of colour and texture. Opt for a scarf with pretty embroidery or a pattern, this will complete your look but can be removed if the weather decides to change. Just because the weather is dull, it doesn’t mean your dress sense should be – be fearless and don’t hesitate to mix and match with colour and texture.

Hats off With Royal Ascot week just around the corner, renowned bespoke tailor, Oliver Brown provides everything you need to know about top hats

F

ashion historians believe the top hat is a descendent of the ‘sugar loaf hat’ worn in medieval times. The first top hats were made of beaver fur, which was matted, pummeled and boiled until it resembled a felt that could be shaped and buffed to a shine. These models were soon replaced by silk top hats, which were favoured for their elegance and stunning lustre – and these highly sought-after antiques are still considered the ultimate in top hats today.

TOP HATS TODAY From the late 1700s through to the 1800s, top hats were ubiquitous, with gentlemen of all classes wearing them. But during the early 20th century top hats gradually became saved for more formal occasions. This tends to be the case today, although in recent years the top hat has enjoyed resurgence. Now, modern gentlemen regularly sport them to events such as the Derby and Royal Ascot. Although many races have adopted a more liberal dress code over the years, Royal Ascot retains its exacting standards, with gentlemen required to wear full morning dress in the Royal Enclosure. Top hats can also be purchased on site from the Ascot shop, where Oliver Brown hosts a top hat area.

TYPES OF TOP HATS

Black antique silk top hats are considered the height of beauty and elegance because of their impressive shine, shape and lightness. The modern versions, such as the Fur Felt in black and grey are bulkier than the antique style but are long-lasting. The ‘Ascot Top Hat’ and its taller counterpart, the ‘Hetherington

22

2016MAY_COUTURE_ASCOT TOP HATS.indd 22

Ascot Top Hat’, are the closest alternative to an original silk top hat. But unlike original silk top hats that were made using a unique fabric called silk plush, which has a long nap, and was stretched over a hard gossamer shell to give it its high shine, modern ones are finished with melusine fabric, and don’t have the same impressive shine, look and lightness.

HOW TO WEAR YOUR TOP HAT The top hat should sit flat on your head, not tilted forward or backwards and should sit half an inch above the ears. The shape and height of antique silk top hats has evolved over the years, with the crowns gradually becoming taller in height and the brims narrower. The most common shape of antique silk top hats is the bell, which has slightly curved sides, but there are also examples such as the stovepipe, which has straight sides and is particularly tall. The shape you opt for is a personal choice, for example, if you have a smaller head you may want to opt for a crown that’s lower in height to keep everything in proportion.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR TOP HAT

Any dust on an antique or modern top hat can be removed by lightly brushing it with a pure bristle brush; when dusting an antique silk top hat, brush in the direction of the nap to keep it smooth. You can treat it with steam if needed or bring it into the shop to have it cleaned. To keep the polished appearance, antique silk top hats will need to be buffed from time to time. Using a velvet pad, sweep over the surface in the direction of the nap a few times until the hat’s deep, glossy shine is reinstated. EAUX shines a spotlight on Phantom Timepieces

T

brilliantly crafted

he first wristwatch was designed for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary in 1868, however this has been continually contested throughout history. Originally thought to be effeminate, wearable timepieces grew in popularity following the First World War, where soldiers wore their pocket watches in leather straps on their wrists for practicality. Fast-forward to present day and, despite the rise of technology, the wristwatch is often considered an everyday necessity. There is still demand for classic, mechanical watches, and many smaller brands have been advancing onto the scene to provide a luxurious alternative to the traditional model. Founded in 2014, Phantom Timepiece’s ethos is simple: to combine British creativity with contemporary design. Each timepiece in the brand’s signature Collection One has been carefully crafted using the highest quality

of materials, creating a unique design that seamlessly takes you from daytime to evening.

Founder Martin Russell states;

The unassuming elegance of Collection One lies with its simplistic design. The slim watch hands with luminous infill details define each of the four watch editions, affording the pieces their contemporary feel. By using soft Italian leather for the strap, each watch has been designed for comfort and will age beautifully over time. The Japanese Miyota quartz mechanism ensures accurate time and datekeeping. The date is displayed in a small insert just above the ‘Six’ hour mark.

I set out to create a lasting watch design that can be developed over time into different styles to suit everyday lifestyle. Developing a watch is a delicate and detailed process, which is why the first Phantom collection has been worked on and refined for over a year so it looks and feels it’s very best.

Perhaps the most prominent aspect of these beautiful timepieces is the stainless steel casing, utilising Phantom’s signature sandblasting effect in either Black or Silver. The finishing of the case adds to the contemporary aesthetic of the collection, leaving the cases matte instead of polished for a unique design. The watches are also more robust in design when compared to similar calibre watches, guaranteed to be waterproof up to 10 ATM.

Since launching in late 2014, the brand has created a really solid platform to grow and has built up a unique following. It’s been a promising first year and we are really excited for the future. Over the past year or so we have been dedicated to ensuring everything we do is in keeping with the brand’s stylish, contemporary ethos. I wanted to build a watch brand from nothing into something which people could enjoy, desire and appreciate everyday.” To find out more, visit www.phantomtimepiece.com Phantom is proud to be supported by The Princes Trust.

nspired by the magnificent gardens of Hampton Court Palace, this collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces blends unique fabrics, stunning florals and contemporary silhouettes. Collection No.6 is a feast of lavish textures in the form of exquisite jacquards, luxurious guipure lace and feather light silks. Meanwhile, distinguished details are revealed in the form of printed linings, sculptural necklaces and Louis heels – the latter inspired by the 18th century French court. Collection No.6 celebrates the beauty of Hampton Court Palace through four key themes;

LANCELOT ‘CAPABILITY’ BROWN This striking print is named after former Chief Gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. An iconic figure within garden design, Brown maintained the formal Baroque-style of the gardens circa 1764, while at the same time creating a landscape of which he was extremely proud.

THE TULIP PRINT Introduced to the gardens by King William III and Queen Mary II, both keen collectors of exotic plants, the tulip is brought to life through exquisite jacquard fabric.

BOTANICAL INSPIRATION The botanical print details the stunning paintings of The Hampton Court Palace Florilegium Society, members of whom meet once a month to explore the gardens, and whose paintings are on display at the Palace today.

THE GREAT VINE Over 240 years old and considered the largest in the world, intricate designs in the finest guipure lace bring the leaves and grapes of the Great Vine firmly into the 21st century. Visit www.hobbs.co.uk to view the full, beautiful collection.

You’re welcome to book a free consultation before you jump in with anything, this way the dedicated staff can help you be sure you’re doing the right thing. When it comes to spa treatments, SK Clinic is famed for their facials, able to offer clients an extensive selection. Worth noting in particular is the award-winning Pevonia Prescriptive facial. Rather than having a brief chat with your therapist prior to the therapy, a professional skin diagnosis is undertaken. A UV light is used to see deep into the skin and find the cause of any sensitivities or congestion. This in-depth analysis allows the therapists to consider both internal and external factors, which enables them to use the perfect products and advise their clients how to achieve long-term, visible results. Following the skin diagnosis, you are treated to a deep cleanse, skin treatments, massage and a facemask, all tailored to your individual needs. The clinic also provides make-up and makeovers, nails, hand and foot care, body wraps, tanning, alternative therapies such as reflexology, treatments especially for men… They truly do cater to the individual. Eating well

in older age

Andrew Mussett, Care UK’s roving chef for Suffolk, highlights three of his top tips from the Eating As We Age guide

A

new guide, created by Care UK, offers advice for family carers on eating and drinking in older age. With the expertise of Care UK’s chefs and the experience of care professionals, the Eating As We Age guide provides information about nutrition alongside recipe inspiration and advice on dietary issues.

1. DINE WITH DIGNITY It is important to support your loved one’s independence. Make every dining experience easy for them by decanting small amounts into ramekins and jugs to allow them to prepare their own food.

2. HYDRATION IS VITAL FOR HEALTH Dehydration is a risk that is often overlooked and there are plenty of ways to ensure your loved one drinks enough. Make drinks look appealing, share a tea break and serve foods that have high levels of water such as fruit and vegetables.

3. FORTIFY YOUR FOOD Increase calorie intake without increasing the volume of food being consumed by fortifying food. Try adding butter or cheese to mashed potato, and tablespoons of double cream to rice pudding. To pick up your free copy of the Eating As We Age guide, pop in to any of Care UK’s ten

Secrets of Holiday Hair

T

Sam Prior from Mr Barbers provides some haircare tips ready for your summer holidays

here’s a lot of debate among the health and beauty industry regarding male grooming on holiday. What should you do with your facial hair? What male grooming essentials should you take? On holiday many men decide to grow a ‘holiday beard’. This is all well and good, until you get home and shave to reveal your pasty white face. On the other hand, shaving on holiday when you have a freshly tanned face can be sore and irritating. My advice would be to purchase a beard trimmer and keep your facial hair to a very short stubble. A good trimmer doesn’t have to cost the earth and will also come in handy for any other unwanted hair! John Lewis stock some great options. If you’re sticking to the clean-shaven look, be careful when using a pre-shave oil in a hot

34

2016MAY_HEALTHBEAUTY_BARBER SHOP_38.indd 34

climate. The oil will effectively ‘cook’ your skin if you don’t remove it properly. One product I would highly recommend following your shave would be a SPF-protective moisturiser. Clarins make a fantastic moisturiser, it includes SPF 50, UV protection, and comes in a handy 30ml tube so complies with airport security. Other products I would recommend for travel would be a high-performance shave serum, such as the King of Shaves Advance Shave Serum. This will leave your skin soft and supple, with no razor burn or irritation. Another essential accessory is a comb, to ensure hair is looking it’s best at all times. The Kent 200mm Folding Pocket Comb is ideal, small enough to slip into your pocket or bag for styling on the go.

HOLIDAY HAIR TIPS! 1. Try and stay away from oil-based products in your hair if you are in a hot country, the heat will melt the product and make your hair appear greasy. 2. If you are planning to be in and out of the pool all day, ensure you have a suitable

haircut. Discuss a low-maintenance style with your barber; they will be able to recommend the best cuts to suit your trip. 3. Shave in the shower. The hot steam will soften your bristles and open up your pores for a closer shave. 4. Forgotten your shave cream? There’s always a small bottle of conditioner in your hotel room, it’s perfect for shaving and great for moisturising. 5. Use dry shampoo if your hair is thin and lifeless. It’s inexpensive and thickens fine hair a treat. 6. Use hair wax as shoe polish in a push, it shines them up a treat! 7. If you’ve got a busy day ahead with no time to blow dry, try putting styling products in your hair when it’s wet and over-style it with a brush or comb. For instance, if you like your hair loosely brushed back, slick it down with product and leave it for 30mins. Just before you leave, run your hands through it to rough it up and restyle it. Your hair will have dried in this position and will want to stay in that direction, therefore will be easier to style.

Absolutely

flawless

Editorial assistant Hannah Cutts visits Flawless Image Salon and Spa to experience an indulgent aromatherapy facial

S

ituated on the outskirts of the town centre, Flawless Image is the ideal retreat away from everyday life. After opening its doors in March 2011, owner Sarah Gregory has since created a haven of tranquillity within the bustling marina area of Ipswich. Flawless Image offers lavish and luxurious Temple Spa treatments, alongside an exceptional quality of service. I was invited to try out the Repose AntiInflammatory Aromatherapy Facial, which is a relaxing, indulgent treat for all skin types. The treatment uses fine essential oils to help soothe, calm and nourish a tired, irritated complexion, as well as relax the mind. The minimalist décor of the salon and its modern furnishing creates a stylish yet fussfree setting, perfect for a day of relaxation – and the friendly therapists ensured my experience was nothing short of pure pampering bliss! After a brief chat I was shown to a dimly lit treatment room where soothing music played and candles adorned the sides. Wrapped in a soft, fluffy towel, I already felt a world away from the stresses of everyday life. Before the refreshing Quench rejuvenating facemask was applied, my skin was cleansed and toned. My therapist then soothed me to slumber with a luxuriating scalp massage. Once the facemask was removed, I had a facial massage to help lift and tighten the skin. Next up was an exfoliation treatment using The Power Breakfast, a deliciously scented scrub and mask combo.

36

2016MAY_HEALTHBEAUTY_FLAWLESSS IMAGE.indd 36

The second facemask in this particular treatment is matched to your skin type; my therapist chose the Purification deep cleansing mask, which is described as a ‘vacuum cleaner for the pores’ – something my dull and stressed skin was in desperate need of. Whilst the mask was busy working to clear my skin, I was treated to a wonderful arm and hand massage. Heaven! After relaxing for a further 20 minutes, my facial was almost complete. The therapist finished by applying various lotions and potions, including Be Clear correcting serum, Windows of the Soul eye cream, Exalt firming neck cream, All Talk moisturising lip balm, and Moisture To Go balancing moisturiser, perfect for my combination skin. The Repose Anti-Inflammatory Aromatherapy Facial did wonders for my skin, resulting in a replenished and visibly clearer skin tone. My skin was not only left silky smooth, but I felt fresh and revitalised, too. The staff at Flawless Image did a fantastic job in making me feel welcome; from the moment I stepped through the door I was well and truly pampered, so I would definitely recommend this treatment and the salon as a whole. FOREO ISSA TOOTHBRUSH

This toothbrush doesn’t look like any other brush you’ll have seen on the market. Made out of silicone, the website boasts that the combination of Sonic Pulse Technology and unique design will help clean and whiten your teeth like never before. Having trialled this toothbrush over the last month, I can categorically state that it is the best toothbrush I have owned. It cleans incredibly well with absolutely zero irritation, and the vibration is actually quite pleasant. The combination silicone and PBT polymer brush head is strong on plaque, yet still very gentle on your gums. It is also really easy to clean, the toothpaste just rinses off so the brush looks new even after a months’ worth of use. The slimline design is comfortable to hold, easy to grip, and the silicone head shows no sign of wear at all, much better than a standard or even a normal electric toothbrush.

WHITEWASH SONIC WHITENING TOOTHBRUSH

PHILLIPS SONICARE DIAMONDCLEAN TOOTHBRUSH

Overall, I would recommend this toothbrush to anyone with sensitive gums, in fact anyone at all! It leaves your mouth feeling fresh and is really comfortable as well. The best toothbrush currently on the market. Available from www.foreo.com for £149.

I came to review the Phillips Sonicare DiamondClean with a fair amount of scepticism. Sonic is a term normally reserved for military grade aircraft and Science Fiction, so I was unsure as to how it could apply to a toothbrush. The brush comes with five settings that customise the motion of the brush head: clean, gum care, polish, sensitive and white. As most of us desire whiter teeth, I figured this is the setting I would test for this review. After two weeks of use, I have to confess my original scepticism is completely gone. My teeth are clearly whiter and feel much cleaner than they have done with any other toothbrush. I’m left feeling fresher, a feeling which seems to last longer through the day than before. Worth noting is the charging station, which uses near field technology to charge and doubles up as a glass to store the brush. It removes any electrical contacts from moisture, improving the safety and longevity of the brush. In my eyes, the Sonicare DiamondClean is a great investment for anyone. Available from www.philips.co.uk for £250.

I jumped at the chance to try out the whitewash Sonic Whitening Toothbrush. Having heard such wonderful reviews about sonic toothbrushes currently on the market, I couldn’t wait to see if it could improve my pearly whites. The whitewash Sonic Whitening Toothbrush has advanced sonic technology that combines with the vibrating cleaning action to help whiten teeth. Over the last month of using the toothbrush I have seen noticeable results, my teeth are whiter than ever before. It provides a fresher clean than my normal toothbrush ever did. The toothbrush has three main settings: clean, whiten or massage. I have been using the ‘whiten’ setting as this was my main goal. With use of the toothbrush, I really have seen some fantastic results. The 30-second interval timer allows you to ensure each part of your mouth is cleaned evenly, something that is always a pain when using a standard toothbrush. In short, I would recommend a sonic toothbrush to anyone, and the whitewash Sonic Whitening Toothbrush is a fantastic option for those looking to upgrade their existing electric toothbrush or move away from the standard toothbrush we all know so well. This is a must-have hygiene accessory for any bathroom cabinet. Available from www.whitewashlaboratories.com for £64.99.

Aspect Safety Mirrors reflect on how mirrors can enhance your home exercise space

I

f you’re thinking of fitting a gym into your home, it’s important to consider whether or not you are going to want some form of mirror. Although mirrors don’t take the place of a qualified personal trainer or group exercise instructor, they are definitely an important aid and tool when exercising alone, and can help you perfect technique by being able to watch your own movements. Needless to say, the mirrors you place in your home gym go through a higher amount of wear and tear than average, so looking for quality should always be a priority. Aspect Safety Mirrors have been supplying and installing Pilkington UK Optimirror safety mirrors in professional gyms and home studios for the past 20 years, as they fit the bill for both British and European safety standards.

Available in both wall mirrors – which comes with polished and raised edges – or portable mirrors, whether you’re creating a permanent workout area in your home or simply using whatever space you have available, Aspect Safety Mirror have it covered! The portable mirrors feature a black powder coated metal frame on legs, with lockable caster wheels, making them both easy to move and then safe once in place. The choice is yours when it comes to choosing your mirrors. Here are some of Aspect Safety Mirror’s top flat mirror products to give you some food for thought:

SAFETY BACKED GLASS: This one is not unbreakable, although it does have a higher quality shatter resistance compared to your average glass. On the flip side though, it has greater clarity than both plastic and stainless steel mirrors, and is manufactured by Pilkington right here in the UK.

ACRYLIC: Simple and shatterproof, this one is ideal for indoor scenarios. They are 10 times stronger than glass mirrors, but do not give the reflection quality of glass.

POLYCARBONATE: This one is extremely robust and actually provides 30 times greater strength than an acrylic option, and is 250 times stronger than traditional glass too.

STAINLESS STEEL: Manufactured using high quality 0.9mm stainless steel, this choice is virtually unbreakable and is also a more hygienic option. It is also good if you feel the possibility of abuse on the mirror could be greater, as it is strong and corrosion resistant. For more information, visit www. aspectsafetymirrors.co.uk or call 01223 263 555 to find out how Aspect Safety Mirrors can help you!

Leanne Wilcox indulges in a luxury hot stone massage at Hintlesham Hall’s stunning spa

estled in the glorious Suffolk countryside you’ll find Hintlesham Hall. Whether you’re after a day of pampering, fine dining with award-winning food, or a tranquil weekend break, this picturesque hotel ticks all the boxes.

Elemis, which are all neatly on display in a lit cabinet. Manicure stations are set up in the main room with adjacent treatment rooms, a washroom and waiting area. other techniques which soon loosened my taut muscles. She continued to deeply knead while loosening the knots, applying various intensities of pressure. Afterwards, I could immediately feel the difference in my neck, shoulders and back. My muscles were relaxed and the tension in my shoulders had pretty much dissipated.

Once you’ve parked your car and walked down the tree-lined pathway to the entrance, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported to a bygone era. Steeped in history, Hintlesham Hall dates back to the early 15th century – and is quite the picture-perfect setting. Manicured lawns, a beautiful pond and rolling countryside make for a scene that could have easily leapt out from a Jane Austin novel.

Outside on the terrace is a hot tub, which overlooks the expansive grounds, perfect for blissful pampering in the summer months. While the history of this building is evident, exposed brickwork and original wooden beams are still on show in the treatment rooms, its modern makeover creates a warm, cosy and homely atmosphere.

I would highly recommend the hot stone massage to anyone suffering with back pain as it offers quick relief to sore, overworked muscles and tight knots. It worked really well as a stressreliever, too, reducing the amount of tautness in my muscles. If you really want to indulge, though, go for one of their spa packages – the decadent pamper and afternoon tea deal is perfect for those seeking a little ‘me’ time.

Inside, it’s as if time stood still: original focal features such as ornate architecture and open fireplaces are synonymous with its time and remain intact, while gilt picture frames adorn the walls evoking a real sense of history. While admiring the décor, I was kindly greeted by my therapist, Laura, who showed me to the spa, an old outer building where the barn stables once stood. It’s now an opulent hidden sanctuary offering the most luxuriating treatments. Once inside, your senses are soon filled with the subtle scent of leading skincare brand,

After my tour I was shown to a dimly lit room, where a calming fragrance filled the air; the atmosphere was soothing to say the least and I couldn’t wait to unwind!

To book an appointment with Laura Marshall, call 01473 652334 or visit www.hintleshamhall.co.uk.

Before Laura set to work, an almond-based oil was applied to my back while the lower part of my body was cocooned in a soft, fluffy towel. Laura began working my muscles with her hands while the hot stones cooked. Applying a firm pressure, she explained how the treatment works: the stones contain small pockets of air that retain heat; the heat relieves the built up tension while increasing circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system. Combining the stones with her handwork, Laura used circular motions and a number of

idden away just past the Orwell Bridge in a beautiful countryside location, Suffolk Food Hall has become well known for its exquisite local produce and kitschy-quirky home and garden décor. Tucked away behind the main shop sits The Cookhouse, Suffolk Food Halls’ premier restaurant, where much of the lovely local produce is showcased in unique and delicious dishes. Worth a mention is the delicious Father’s day menu, which includes dads’ favourite- the all day breakfast- guaranteed to please. Check out www.suffolkfoodhall.co.uk for more details. Who could then refuse, to review a meal at this delightful Suffolk gem of a place? If the cuisine was as delicious as the view it

was bound to be a treat! On arrival, we were greeted by friendly restaurant manager Emma, who gave us a table with a view and promptly took our drinks order with a smile. Although it was relatively quiet due to the time of our reservation, the restaurant had a surprisingly warm and friendly atmosphere considering the size of the building. The panoramic views of the Orwell Bridge, a wide stretch of the river and grazing cows on a nearby pasture were quite something to behold. As the kitchen is open to the restaurant, I was also able to enjoy watching the chefs expertly prepare the food. The menu included a great range of dishes, which made it almost too difficult to choose. I was feeling decidedly traditional and opted for the Soup of the Day, tomato, red pepper and chilli to start, and Adnams beer-battered haddock for main. My colleague chose to start with the smoked haddock scotch egg, followed by the chargrilled lamb leg steak with wild garlic pesto.

The food prompted more than just a few belly rumbles as it found its way to our table; it smelt so delicious I was eager to begin. The flavour did not disappoint- creamy in texture, with a hint of a chilli adding a zing to rich tomato, the soup was utter perfection. Served with freshly made soda bread to soak up the remains in the bowl, it was warming, hearty and put a big smile on my face. The haddock scotch egg was also well received, soft boiled in the centre and served with a creamy and smooth leek sauce. The deep-fried capers were an excellent touch, crispy and delicate in flavour that finished the dish perfectly. Next came the indulgent mains. Both meals were presented cleanly on large white plates, and there was definitely no skimping on the portion sizes. The chargrilled lamb steak was tender and succulent. Served with beef dripping croutons, new potatoes, grilled cherry tomatoes and

red onions, it was entirely scrumptious and paired with a glass of a red wine, brought a feeling of luxury to our laid-back lunch. My first thoughts on the Adnams-battered fried haddock; I’m never going to finish this! The fish was almost of a size of my arm, served abed a mountain of chips, with minted peas and tartare sauce to the side. Delicate in structure and surprisingly light, the fish was cooked flawlessly. The chips were also a joy to eat; crispy outside and fluffy inside, just as we love them to be. Our previous choices having been so delicious, when Emma came back over to offer the dessert menu, how were we supposed to say no! We pondered over the tantalizing selection for a few moments, before settling on the warm bakewell cake for myself, whilst my partner in crime opted for the day’s special, vanilla panna cotta.

Delicate in texture, light and creamy, the panna cotta was full of flavour. Served with crushed, deliciously crispy and light meringues, forest fruit compote and a fresh strawberry sat atop, this classic Italian dessert was incredibly tempting. My warm bakewell cake was deceptively simple. Topped with soft vanilla ice cream, flaked almonds and sharp Tiptree cherry jam, the melt-in-the-mouth texture and combination of flavours made this humble dessert feel more luxurious. A definite crowd-pleaser.

You can enjoy lunch or dinner at The Cookhouse, which is open Monday – Thursday 8am-3pm, Friday – Saturday 8am-11pm, Sunday 8:30am-5pm. The Cookhouse, Suffolk Food Hall, Wherstead, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP9 2AB 01473 786616 www.suffolkfoodhall.co.uk

We left The Cookhouse visibly rounder in stature than before. It was a thoroughly enjoyable meal, with great seasonal produce and wonderful flavours. I would fully recommend the restaurant to anyone, its subtle elegance and delicious food are more than enough to enthrall the most discerning of diners.

An independent, family-run Brasserie in the heart of Ipswich, Arlingtons serves seasonal French flavours to the masses. Head chef Robin Beecroft uses the finest local ingredients to produce an appealing menu full of flavour. Try the Boeuf Bourguignon – the rich sauce will leave you wanting more and more – or relax in the art deco gallery with a glass of 2013 Pinot Noir Domaine Cabrials. For fine French dining in the market town of Bury St Edmunds, try Maison Bleue with its relaxed yet sophisticated ambience. This award-winning restaurant boasts impeccable, creative presentation, charming staff and a great selection for seafood lovers, all under the guidance of head chef Pascal Canevet. We recommend trying the chef’s signature dish, the Plateau de Fruits de Mer: a platter of seafood delights.

ITALIAN The food in Italy varies greatly from region to region but one thing that remains the same is exceptionally tasty pizza. This is something that Suffolk Stonehouse does very well indeed.

This small restaurant located in the pretty town of Bungay in the north of Suffolk recently won best independent pizza restaurant in the UK. It offers a great selection of classic pizzas (including a gluten free base), a cosy atmosphere and service with a smile. Try the Blythburgh if you’re a fan of pulled pork. Bellissimo!

TURKISH Traditionally prepared over coals or fires, Turkish food is often slow cooked and uses the freshest local ingredients. Marinated meats, fish and vegetables evoke a real sense of the Mediterranean at Mahzen, a Turkish barbeque restaurant near Ipswich waterfront. Cooked over hot charcoals, Mahzen offers simple, flavoursome food that’ll have you coming back for more. At the time of writing this there’s a three week waiting list for weekend bookings! We’d highly recommend the Hunkar Begendi for a dose of Turkish delight. Alaturka has been wowing diners since 2011 with authentic Turkish cuisine. The flavours will transport you back to the Ottoman era, invoking a rich tapestry of taste. Try the meze

LEBANESE & MOROCCAN For Middle-eastern flavours, head to Casablanca. Loved by locals, this Moroccan and Lebanese restaurant provides a warm welcome whether you’re a regular or a firsttimer. Enjoy plenty of hearty grain based dishes with fresh meats and fish. We adore the Babaganoush and lamb shank for its tender meat. What’s your favourite?

INDIAN Love the heat and flavour of a good curry? Join the club! Habibur Rahmen, head chef at Ballingdon Valley Indian Cuisine in Sudbury, won the Best Chef of the Year award in 2014. This welcoming restaurant uses only the freshest of ingredients and offers great service whether you’re eating in or grabbing a takeaway. We recommend the chef’s special Korai Gosht and the Moglai Chicken. If you’re nearer to Bury St Edmunds, then Voujon is well known for its authentic Indian cuisine. With a great wine list, exceptional service and a comprehensive menu, Voujon is a great place to get your curry fix. In Ipswich you’ll find Zaika, a husband and wife team that prides itself on personal service, fresh produce and a traditional Indian feel. The Murghi Massala from the house special menu is a rich, delicious dish well worth a try.

This family run business has been a firm favorite in Ipswich since it’s very beginning. You won’t want to leave!

If Brooklyn style burgers and dirty dogs are more to your taste, you’ll love East Coast Diner in Woodbridge. This popular haunt whips up a mean milkshake and a great gluten free pizza base.

For the finest fusion food in Suffolk, Aqua Eight, is the place to go. Offering creative pan-Asian cuisine, every dish that leaves the kitchen is beautifully presented and tastes amazing. We adore the chargrilled sirloin beef and asparagus rolls in teriyaki. Fancy trying it for yourself? Book early! If you’re in the West of the region, head to Mings Oriental in the heart of Bury St Edmunds for personable staff and a relaxed atmosphere combined with fresh, flavoursome food. The Char-sui Buns are to die for.

THAI Bringing South East Asian street food to Newmarket is Thai Street Café. Whether you’re popping in for a quick lunch or making an evening of it, you’ll enjoy fresh, authentic ingredients made into tasty dishes from the ever-changing menu. For 12 years, Khobkhun Thai has been delighting with its fragranced and spiced dishes. This lively, contemporary restaurant really brings the exciting flavours of the Far East to Newmarket. In Ipswich you’ll find Kwan Thai, a relaxed, ambient setting in which to enjoy a diverse range of dishes from the talented chefs.

For a decent rack of ribs with sweet potato fries try Bear’s American Restaurant in Ipswich. Don’t let the bold décor fool you these guys make a mouthwatering burger. Try one of the food challenges if you dare! We also recommend Sloppy Joe’s Family American Bar & Diner on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. If you fancy taste testing for yourself on a weekend, it’s highly recommended you prebook a table to save disappointment.

MEXICAN Momentum Mexican Cantina on the quiet St Nicholas Street in Ipswich is a recent addition to the area, and is fast gaining popularity for its authentic Mexican cuisine. In this intimate eatery you’ll enjoy enchiladas, tortillas, burritos and quesadillas – all firm favourites on the menu, but we love the super fresh sea bass taco most!

BRITISH Back home, you can grab some hearty British fare from many great restaurants and cafes. We love Suffolk Food Hall in Wherstead for the very best local produce, The Townhouse in Ipswich for its modern twists on the classics, The Unruly Pig in Bromeswell for its relaxed, unpretentious flavourful food, Kesgrave Hall for its amazing steaks, The Crown in Woodbridge for its fresh local fish, and Horringer Six Bells for its cracking Sunday roast! If that’s not enough to make your mouth water, I don’t know what is!

Pump Street

Bakery

We chat to Joanna Brennan of Pump Street Bakery about the bakery’s success so far and their new artisan chocolate line YOUR 6TH BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP. HOW HAVE THE LAST SIX YEARS BEEN FOR YOU? The past six years have been busy, but incredibly fulfilling. We both did jobs we very much enjoyed before opening Pump Street but it’s different to run your own business – it’s less of a job, more of a lifestyle – and, for me, there is a lot of pride in building something from scratch and watching people enjoy it.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS? Our huge focus on quality. From day one, if we ever felt something wasn’t right, we wouldn’t sell it. We take months, sometimes years, to bring out new products, as we like to be thorough when we test recipes.

WHAT’S THE SUFFOLK FOODIE COMMUNITY LIKE? The Suffolk Food community is small! We are on first name terms with all of the food producers we can think of, and a lot of shop owners, chefs and restaurateurs. It’s very friendly and supportive, and it’s also a good challenge for all of us to not just uphold, but build on the reputation of the county for real, local food.

56

2016MAY_GOURMET_PUMP ST BAKERY__51.indd 56

I am part of a small group called the Young Producers who meet up to support each other and raise the profile of Suffolk Food. It’s a unique group in its makeup and goals – there isn’t anything else quite like it. We are very lucky to have likeminded producers nearby to bounce ideas off and work together.

YOU’RE A FATHER AND DAUGHTER TEAM – DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE GROWN CLOSER THROUGH WORKING TOGETHER OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS? Absolutely. I wouldn’t trade this experience for any other career choice I could have made, largely because we have worked so well together and I have learned so much from him and about him.

CHOCOLATE IS NOW SOMETHING YOU MAKE FROM SCRATCH ON SITE. HOW DO YOU TAKE AN INGREDIENT FROM HALFWAY ACROSS THE WORLD AND GIVE IT A ‘SUFFOLK MAKEOVER’?

and traditionally, using the best ingredients, and that’s what we’ve always tried to do with our bread and now our chocolate. We do add a Pump Street Bakery stamp to a few of our bars, though – we add bread!

HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO THE CHOCOLATE SO FAR? Greater than we expected! To have our chocolate stocked in fine food stores globally is not something we anticipated would happen so soon. The awards have really helped to spread the word quickly.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR PUMP STREET BAKERY? So many possibilities! We’d like to focus on our core business of bread, pastry and chocolate, but are always open to new ideas and experiments. We like to keep things fresh for our customers as well as ourselves.

We don’t try to impose any flavour on the chocolate – the vast majority of our bars have nothing but cocoa and sugar in them. But the purity of approach is a very Suffolk theme; from Fen Farm Dairy to Newbourne Farm, food producers in Suffolk do things simply

obert Strathern, co-owner of Fairfields Farm crisps, speaks to EAUX about the delicious hand cooked range and reveals all on how each crisp packet can be traced back to the potatoes used…

YOU GROW AROUND 12 DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF POTATOES – ARE THEY ALL USED TO MAKE CRISPS? For crisps, we use Lady Claire or Lady Rosetta; each packet of our hand cooked crisps states the variety of potato and we can even trace which field it was grown in. For our fresh potato range we grow varieties like Maris Peer, Marfona and Estima.

HOW DO YOU TRACE EACH CRISP PACKET BACK TO THE POTATOES USED AND THE FIELD IT WAS GROWN IN? Using the East of England Co-op as an example, we grow fields specifically for its stores. These fields are earmarked and the potatoes are not for anyone else. We keep records of all varieties grown in each field and every potato box is labelled with the field name and variety, so when they enter the factory we are able to trace the potato back to its field of origin.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE A STANDARD BAG OF FAIRFIELDS FARM CRISPS?

HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK WITH THE EAST OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE?

The potatoes are washed and graded before entering the factory. They are then sliced and hand cooked, this process takes around 15 minutes.

We had been producing our crisps for two years by the time we met the East of England Co-op’s Sourced Locally team in 2008, and very quickly we started supplying stores across East Anglia. A year later, we expanded to delivering our fresh potatoes as well, and the partnership has grown from there.

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH DIFFERENT FLAVOURS FOR YOUR CRISPS? It all stems from an idea and from there we all sit down around the kitchen table to discuss the new flavour while tasting a range of samples. If we get the ‘go ahead’ from the Fairfields family we introduce it to the range. We have partnered with some fantastic local producers in recent years, including the Suffolk Salami Company and Adnams to create a truly local range.

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING AS A HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM?

We love working with the East of England Co-op as they are passionate about locally sourced food and are delighted to have won this year’s Producer of the Year award. We are also supporting the East of England Co-op’s second Sourced Locally Fortnight this summer with in-store promotions and a competition to win a tour of the farm and the factory. The East of England Co-op’s Sourced Locally Fortnight runs between 30th May – 12th June 2016.

Challenging! But we always try to leave work in the workplace, keeping home life separate is important to our family.

DO YOU INTEND TO KEEP PRODUCTION LOCAL TO SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMY? Of course, we are extremely proud of our farm and supporting our local economy. For every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized shop, 63p stays in the local economy and we would like to keep it that way.

Lebanese and Moroccan-fusion restaurant Casablanca reveal three tempting recipes exclusively for EAUX readers

KIBBEH Makes approximately 15 kibbeh

FOR THE STUFFING: • 500g minced lamb • 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 2 tbsp. veg oil • ½ tbsp. each of ground cinnamon, ground cumin, ground ginger and sumac • ¼ tbsp. salt • ¼ tbsp. pepper • 150g sultanas • Small handful of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped • Vegetable oil for frying Sweat the chopped onion in some vegetable oil over a low heat until soft. Add the lamb mince and fry, stirring until lightly browned. Add the spices, salt and pepper, and continue frying for about 15 minutes on a gentle heat, stirring. Turn the heat off and add the sultanas and parsley. Mix well and leave it to cool down.

1 2 3 4

FOR THE DOUGH: • 500g finely minced lean beef • 250g fine bulgur wheat • 1 tsp. salt

1 2 3 4

5 6

Soak the bulgur wheat in cold water for about 25-30 minutes until soft. Drain through a fine sieve, pressing out excess water. In the food processer, grind all the dough ingredients together until you get a dough-like consistency. You can add a dash of flour if the dough gets too sticky. Divide the kibbeh dough into 15 portions and shape into balls. Holding a ball in one hand, make a hole in it with your index finger or the thumb of your other hand. Widen the hole by turning the kibbeh ball and pressing the inside walls gently against your palm. Try to get it as thin as possible, making sure it is uniformly thick. Dip your hands into cold water as you work in order to get a smooth finish. Fill the hole with 2 tsps. of the stuffing mixture and close it, forming an oval shape with a pointed end. In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil and deep-fry the kibbeh in batches until brown, for about 5-7 minutes.

Serve hot or room temperature.

VEGETABLE

TAGINE • 2 tbsps. vegetable oil • 200g shallots, cut in half • 1 small butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and diced into bite-sized chunks • 1 courgette, chopped • 1 carrot, chopped • 2 medium potatoes, diced into bitesized chunks • 2 tomatoes, skinned and finely chopped • 2 tsps. tomato puree, mixed into 300ml cold water • ¼ tsp. each of ground cumin, ginger and ground coriander • Good pinch and pepper

1

In a tagine (or flameproof dish with a lid, if you don’t have a tagine), fry the shallots over a medium heat until softened. Add the squash, courgette, carrots, potatoes and spices. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring. Add the tomatoes and tomato puree mix, with the salt and pepper. Cover with the lid and leave to simmer for about 40 minutes until the vegetables are cooked. Check from time to time to ensure it doesn’t become too dry, adding more water if needed.

2 3 4

Serve with rice or couscous. Tip: For a sweeter tagine, add 6 pitted prunes or 2 tbsp. sultanas with the chopped vegetables.

Combine the finely chopped nuts, sugar and rose water in a bowl. Grease a 10 x 14 inch pan, and start layering filo pastry into the pan, brushing each sheet with butter. After 4 layers, scatter over half the nut mixture; repeat with 4 layers of filo, then the rest of the nuts. Place the final sheets of filo on top, still layering with butter, and cut into diamond-shaped pieces. Bake at 300 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. Whilst the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining water, sugar, lemon juice and rose water in a pan and heating until it has reduced and thickened. Remove from the heat and allow to fully cool. Remove the baklava from the oven and pour the cooled syrup over the top, making sure the dough is well saturated.

With plenty to see and do in Woodbridge, you’ll need to know where to stop for a bite to eat!

A

long the River Deben lies a market town that many of us have visited for its relaxing walks, excellent selection of independent shops and entertaining boating activities – but you haven’t truly experienced the full potential of Woodbridge until you’ve eaten here. With over 40 different pubs, restaurants and cafes in the greater Woodbridge area, there are plenty of different and unusual cuisines to chose from – or you can always stick to your hearty British favourites. We go through our favourite eateries meal by meal.

BREAKFAST Start off your morning with a smile at The Coach & Horses in the village of Melton. Originally a coach house, this historical building features a modernised country-style interior with a relaxed atmosphere. Try their take on the traditional English breakfast, which comprises egg, bacon, sausage, beans, black pudding, tomato and mushroom.

Open seven days a week, The Tea Hut is a charming café which serves breakfast, lunch and light snacks along the banks of the river. Try their mouth-watering eggs royale alongside a cup of tea or coffee.

LUNCH

DINNER Situated at the top of Market Hill, The Galley offers fine dining in the form of modern English cuisine with a Turkish touch. Enjoy dishes as diverse as Turkish lamb stew and chargrilled Scottish Aberdeen Angus rib-eye steak.

In the village of Pettistree you’ll find The Greyhound Inn, which serves an appetising menu of locally sourced foods and a mix of English and Scottish recipes. If you’re a little more than peckish, we recommend the slow roasted pork belly in Aspall Cyder – you won’t regret it.

If you love Indian food, The Royal Bengal on Quay Street is an authentic restaurant; a favourite in Woodbridge for over 30 years. The chef recommends the ‘Hasina special’, which includes succulent lamb and chicken shashlic cooked in spicy sauce, served with rice and potatoes.

With a menu that changes daily, all we can tell you about The Table on Quay Street is that their food is nothing short of delectable. With a great selection of local ingredients, diners will always benefit from the rich flavours of fresh food.

With a 2AA Rosette restaurant, and a recommendation in the Michelin Guide, The Crown serves an unbeatable selection of award winning dishes, including pork tenderloin, seared venison and lemon sole.

Just round the corner, you’ll find The Cherry Tree Inn. This 17th Century restaurant and hotel serves a mix of pub favourites as well as world cuisines; for vegetarians, we recommend the extremely satisfying Thai coconut chickpea burger.

Just outside Woodbridge, in Bromeswell, you’ll come across the newly re-launched Unruly Pig. Here you can tuck into fantastic foods from local suppliers, cooked to utter perfection. Don’t miss out on The Unruly Burger, which features a Pump Street brioche bun, Roquefort mayonnaise, onion rings and hand cut chips sandwiching a juicy cut of meat – it’s to die for!

24 hours in…

Funchal

“As the sun set over the harbour, I walked to the stern of the ship for one last look at this incredible city.”

H

ailed by many as ‘Europe’s Most Picturesque City’, Funchal is both imposing and intimate. The charming cobbled streets are lined with unusual boutiques and art, sprawling upwards from the water’s edge towards mighty Pico Ruivo, the striking centrepiece of the island. Funchal has remained the capital of Madeira for the last five hundred years, ever since the first settlers arrived on the island back in the 15th century. Due to its location, the city became an important merchant port, its rich soil producing sugar cane and fennel (funcho in Portuguese) in vast quantities. Today, Funchal serves as a much sought-after

66

2016MAY_ESCAPE_FUNCHAL.indd 66

destination for cruising holidays and weekend breaks due to its fascinating history and subtle grandeur. There’s no commotion as with most capital cities; no deafening traffic, no jostling through the streets, just laid-back luxury. I visited whilst cruising the Canary Islands, so only had a very brief amount of time to experience all that Funchal offers. Travelling by foot is without a doubt the easiest way to traverse the city, and comfortable, flat shoes are key to navigating through the uneven streets. When you arrive, be sure to take the cable car that leads you directly up the mountain and into Monte Village. The journey takes roughly 15 minutes and transports you 1837 feet up the side of the mountain. Take a moment to appreciate some of the most breath-taking scenery in all of Europe – just don’t look down!

As you arrive into Monte, pause briefly to revel in the vista before you. The mountain plays host to some phenomenal sights and landmarks, including the delightful Church of Our Lady of Monte. Constructed in 1741 amidst a small summer refuge, it was used predominantly by Funchal’s upper class. As beautiful inside as it is outside, several crystal chandeliers illuminate the interior, paying tribute to the parish’s past residents. If you get the chance, climb to the bell tower terrace for the most spectacular view. Once you’ve finished exploring Monte, take a thrilling 10-minute toboggan ride back down the side of the mountain. This is the traditional way the aristocracy in Monte would descend from their summer retreats, and is an affectionately remembered part of Funchal history. The toboggans have right of way over the roads, so any vehicles you encounter must

(pineapple-banana, anyone?). The locals go to pick up their produce, and the tourists go to overwhelm their senses. Practice your negotiation skills before you arrive as most stall owners are open to haggling and you can walk away with some surprising steals. It’s almost time to start heading back towards the ship, but first a small detour. Steeped in history, the Rua de Santa Maria is one of the oldest streets in the city, and definitely the most iconic thanks to the Arte de Portas Abertas (Art of Open Doors). This public art initiative was launched following a heavy storm in February 2010, which severely damaged a large portion of the Old Town of Funchal. Now, nearly all the doors along this street have been transformed into an open-air art gallery, featuring roughly 200 displays by both local and guest artists. An old and once declining part of the city is now vibrant and colourful, full of shops, bars, restaurants and life, and undoubtedly the heart and soul of Funchal. Finish off the day back at the marina, a glass of traditional Madeira wine in one hand and a slice of delicious bolo de mel (honey cake) in the other. As you watch the yachts lazily drift with the ebb and flow, take a moment to savour the memories of this extraordinary city; I’m certain you’ll return for more.

let you pass. It can be a tad nerve-wrecking watching the cars swerve out of your way, especially when you’re seated in little more than a glorified wicker-basket travelling at up to 30 miles an hour! It’s totally exhilarating, and definitely one of the most unique experiences in Europe. Undeniably my favourite location in the entire city, the Quinta Jardins do Imperador offers gorgeous panoramic views of the mountains in the north and the ocean in the south. Devoted to conservation, many of the plants you will encounter here are rare or extinct in the wild. Don’t forget to stop by ‘Parrot Park’ as you stroll around the gardens. See if you can find the hilarious laughing Yellow-Crowned Amazon parrot, guaranteed to put a smile on your face! Next, head to the Mercado dos Lavradores. You will be seduced by the variety of fresh fish, exotic spices and hybrid tropical fruits

oodhall Manor is an Elizabethan country house of magnificent proportions dating back to 1566. On your first visit you would be forgiven for thinking little had changed over 450 years; the wonderful residence sitting at the end of a tree-lined lane on the outskirts of Sutton village looks almost identical to how it was originally conceived almost half a millennium ago. But step inside and you will experience Suffolk’s finest luxury at its absolute best. The Manor House has recently undergone a full refurbishment and is now available to hire as an exclusive-use venue. Woodhall Manor doesn’t hold back on the upper floors of this mansion either. Coastal SUFFOLK Enjoy the British coast away from the crowds this summer

W

e all know the delights of Southwold and Aldeburgh – the beach huts, the boutiques and the fantastic fish and chips! In the height of summer, these wonderful British seaside towns can get very crowded and the hustle and bustle just isn’t quite as relaxing as it could be. Suffolk is a county full of wonderful places to explore and sometimes some of the lesser known spots are forgotten about. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit more relaxed than the popular beaches in the region, we’d suggest a trip just north of Southwold to the golden sandy beach of Covehithe. Tucked just away from the hustle and bustle of Southwold, tree trunks extrude from the cliffs right along this stretch of beach. If visiting, please ensure

70

EAUX_ESCAPE_SUFFOLK COASTAL.indd 70

you stay safe – erosion can happen at any time and the cliff is very crumbly, so it is recommended that people walk inland via the official Suffolk Coast Path (signed) or along the beach. Remember to check the tide timetable, as you can’t walk along the beach at high tide. Again, near Southwold you’ll find The Denes Beach which is a combination of sand and shingle and popular with windsurfers. On one side is the mouth of the River Blyth and Southwold on the other. Although close to the popular town, The Denes is much quieter, yet still charming and during the summer months you can hop on a ferry which will take you from Southwold to Walberswick for crabbing. Not just a spot for those with a penchant for binoculars and bird watching, the secluded beach of National Trust Dunwich Heath is a peaceful spot just outside of those main seaside areas. It is ideal for families and friends seeking a quiet spot to enjoy during

the height of summer. Obviously, you can bring your binoculars and dogs are allowed off the lead on the beach all year round, however there is one small family area where it is requested for dogs not to be taken. In addition to the beach you have 200 acres of heathland to explore which, during the summer, is a sea of purple heath and yellow gorse. There is plenty of parking – free to National Trust members – toilets, a gift shop and a lovely café selling homemade cakes, hot and cold drinks and ice creams. The unspoilt surroundings mean this hidden gem is well worth exploring. Along the shoreline of the River Stour there is a quiet and isolated stretch of beach near Ewarton – Johnny-All-Alone Creek. To one side there are saltings and behind you there are fields. You can access Johnny-All-Alone creek along the river path from both Holbrook and Shotley. This little known spot on the Suffolk coast could soon be your favourite.

Being on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is nothing if not a unique dining experience: it’s a feast for the senses as well as the stomach. European cuisine is prepared by renowned chef Christian Bodiguel and his team, and all dishes are made from fresh ingredients collected along the journey. If you look closely you’ll spot the chef picking up fresh produce in Paris before down through Southern France, across to Switzerland and Austria near the Alps, then down to Italy and finally, Venice.

As night falls, the black ties and cocktail dresses come out to play. Enjoy your evening meal before venturing to the bar car at the heart of the train. Here, you can relax with a cocktail or chat with the resident pianist. Make sure you try the ‘Guilty 12’ cocktail made by Head Barman Walter, a cocktail inspired by the 12 characters in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Alternatively, you can sample the finest fizz available in the Champagne bar from the finest crystal flutes.

The next morning as the train travels through the breathtaking countryside, a continental breakfast is brought to cabins before lunch is served. As you pull into Venice, you’ll feel the excitement of exploring such a wondrous city, but it’ll be with a heavy heart that you leave the opulence of the most luxurious train in the world.

A weekend in…

Edinburgh

This beautiful, historic, culturally rich capital city is the perfect location for a weekend away

A

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Edinburgh is recognised for its three distinct areas: the historic Old Town, which features an incredibly wellpreserved medieval street plan and many significant buildings such as Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace; the neighbouring area of New Town, which retains neo-classical and Georgian architecture, and is often described as the financial centre of the city; and the adjacent West End, which is thought of as the cultural and artistic centre of the city, with the abundance of cinemas, theatres and concert halls within its borders.

82

2016MAY_ESCAPE_WEEKEND IN EDINBURGH.indd 82

With so much diversity in one location, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. However, plan your journey well and you’ll find yourself completely absorbed in this exceptional Scottish city – so much so that you might want to make it a regular getaway spot.

EXPLORE Put your walking shoes on, because this city is made for serious on-foot exploration. We recommend starting from the outskirts and working your way into the city centre. Visit Arthur’s Seat, part of an extinct volcano, to get the best view of the city. The highest point of the peak sits at 822 feet, and is fairly easy to climb, with the average time to reach the summit at 45 minutes. Have a picnic in the surrounding Holyrood Park (weather

depending, of course) or head down to the stunning Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Other must-see landmarks include Edinburgh Castle, St Giles’ Cathedral and the free-tovisit Scottish National Gallery; take a walk around the corner from the gallery to find the city’s major shopping thoroughfares. Princes Street hosts a number of large flagship stores and high street fashion boutiques; George Street features mid-to-high end brands lining its broad Georgian walkway; Multrees Walk is home to the big luxury and designer names; and Victoria Street presents a plethora of charming independent shops and vintage fashion behind pastel facades.

For a truly unique dining experience, visit the newly opened Aizle, which serves a fixed five-course menu based around their monthly “harvest” from local farmers. Let the team take care of your beverages with their paired drinks menu – a great way to compliment the flavours of your meal. If it’s fine dining you’re after, Number One at the Balmoral is nothing short of magnificent. Presenting a tantalising blend of Scottish and French flavours, this Michelin-starred restaurant is situated in the Victorian Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street, and headed up by a highly talented team of chefs.

CELEBRATE Informally named the ‘City of Festivals’, there are plenty of long-scale events in Edinburgh during the months of May and June to suit every interest. For sport enthusiasts, the Edinburgh Marathon Festival (www.edinburghmarathon.com) is held on the last weekend of May, and will see over 100,000 people flock to the capital to watch their friends and family run for their chosen charity. Bring the family along to experience some of the best children’s theatre from around the world, at the Imaginate Festival from 28th May to 5th June. Attending by over 10,000 children, teachers, parents and carers each year, the festival offers sensory experiences, dance, puppetry, magic and much, much more. Film industry devotees will enjoy the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which celebrates its 70th year during 15th to 26th June. Previous years have seen Keira Knightley, Sean Connery, Jennifer Lawrence and Elijah Wood as guests.

WHERE TO STAY For a central location, the Apex Waterloo Place Hotel (www.apexhotels.co.uk) is ideal. Featuring a spa, fitness centre and swimming pool, bar and restaurant, and contemporary rooms, guests can experience utter relaxation in four-star surroundings. Just outside the city centre, you’ll find 23 Mayfield (www.23mayfield.co.uk). This Victorian hotel features uniquely decorated rooms with hand carved mahogany furniture, a traditional games room and library, and a manicured courtyard. Prefer a homely feel? The Knight Residence Serviced Apartments (www.bymansley.com) are clean, modern and stylish. Each party is given a welcome basket of essentials to enjoy during their stay, and amenities such as free Wi-Fi and modern appliances are provided as standard.

If all that walking has made you thirsty, end your day with a visit to the Scotch Whiskey Experience (www.scotchwhiskeyexperience. co.uk), where you can take a ride in a “barrel” through an ultra-modern virtual tour of the distillery. Indulge in ‘The Taste of Scotland’; this includes the aforementioned tour, a guide to nosing and tasting, and a three-course Scottish food experience – but remember to pre-book, as spaces fill up quickly!

WHERE TO EAT For a luxurious afternoon tea, Colonnades is the best spot in the city. Situated in the grand Signet Library, the restaurant serves stunning cakes, pastries and savoury dishes, along with a quirky selection of drinks. We recommend the Signet Cocktail Afternoon Tea for a meal to remember!

Country and urban perfection Whatever your preference – urban elegance on smooth tarmac or beyond the city on rough terrain – the brand new Volkswagen Tiguan suits all conditions

T

he new Volkswagen Tiguan takes Volkswagen’s future design in a whole new direction. Focusing on quality interior and refinement, as well as high-spec technology, the new Tiguan is more than just an SUV.

15PS to 176W/240PS, they are now more fuel-efficient. The new model offers TSI power trains, combining turbocharging, low displacement and direct injection, to provide an unrivalled combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. Meanwhile the TDI diesel engines feature Volkswagen’s latest rail technology, and offer exceptional torque, low fuel consumption and incredibly low noise levels.

Its flawless design is as eye-catching as ever and features newly designed alloy wheels to complement its reinvented character – sporty, stylish and dynamic. But what’s most striking about the new Tiguan is its interior; featuring premium quality materials, generous space inside and numerous assistance systems for your convenience, you can always travel in comfort and in style.

Not only does the new Tiguan deliver on comfort, safety and style, its in car connectivity provides drivers with even more accessibility. Volkswagen’s Car-Net brings a whole host of online services, always keeping you up to date on the move, while the new Car-Net Safety and Security services, including the automatic accident notification, gives drivers peace of mind.

To ensure your driving experience is like no other, the all-new Tiguan features a generously sized panoramic tilt/slide sunroof and ambient LED lighting. From the door handles and door sill trims to the footwell and decorative dashboard inlays, a unique mood is always set for your journey.

A new cutting-edge ‘Head-up’ display system has also been added, which projects information such as your speed, navigation data and traffic signs above the dashboard, ensuring your eyes remain on the road at all times. Reversing and parking couldn’t be easier, either, thanks to the new Trailer Assist feature, which allows you to reverse seamlessly into any space. In addition, the Optional Area View provides 360-degree vision

with the aid of four cameras, so you can squeeze into those tight spaces with ease. Volkswagen understands that new terrain can be tough and that’s where the new 4MOTION all-wheel drive system comes in. Offering superior traction on a vast range of surfaces, from long, winding country roads and uneven dirt tracks to smooth city tarmacs, it doesn’t matter whether you’re tackling sharp bends, powerful side winds or high speeds on motorways, the new Tiguan offers better road contact than ever before. For even more control behind the wheel, you can activate 4MOTION Active Control, which features four tailored settings that can be used for different types of terrain and driving style. These include fuel-efficient Eco mode, Normal mode for everyday driving, Comfort mode to minimise vibrations, and the dynamic Sport mode. Each setting adapts to the terrain you’re covering and to your style of driving, ensuring utmost comfort, no matter the journey. The new Tiguan is available from £25,530. ello and welcome to the next instalment of the EAUX Road Test.

Those of you who regularly read my column will know that I love a nice car, especially one combining practicality with speed and comfort. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that I loved the XC90. Having never driven a Volvo before, I had high hopes for the vehicle and was not disappointed. The superior high ride position provides a commanding view of the road ahead. With the beautiful carbon fibre dash, the vehicle screams style, akin to that of any high performance car. You have the ability to set and store up to three driving positions in terms of the seat and mirrors, meaning you’re able to set your own preference and never waste time getting the positioning right again. It’s never fun to spend the first ten minutes of a drive setting the car up to your requirements, but this is no longer an issue.

Regarding technology, the XC90 has a dynamic and easy to use driver interface. It makes navigating the on-board computer a dream, linking to a mobile phone has never been easier, and the car sports a USB port in place of an unsightly cigarette lighter socket. Why isn’t a USB port included as standard in all cars? Kudos to the engineers at Volvo for not overlooking the needs of modern technology, we salute you! With this amazing on-board computer and interface, you can also expect Volvo’s best sound system to boot. The Bowers and Wilkins built-in speakers provide an impeccably clear sound. The XC90 also has a built in SIM card slot which allows you to turn the car into a portable WiFi hotspot. Keep the children entertained with Netflix on the move, play online games, stream music; this feature is a lifesaver for long journeys. There is the option to turn five seats into seven, as the boot contains two additional pop-up seats. Ensuring no one gets left behind on those warm summer days, it’s ideal for a day trip to the Southwold seaside. ISOFIX car seat mounting points come as standard,

Myles Davies test drives the new luxury SUV offering from Volvo, the XC90 meaning the XC90 is on top of its game for ride, style and safety. I wish I had more time to practice the autocornering function on the XC90. This is such an intuitive vehicle, I feel I could easily drive it for a month and still discover new things. I especially like the foot swipe (below the back bumper) that automatically opens the boot when you are near, ideal if you have your hands full and are not able to reach the keys. In closing, the XC90 is as comfy to drive on country roads as on the motorway, eating up the miles with ease. It’s quick off the mark and you sacrifice nothing for the ease and comfort that the XC90 affords you. This is truly a fantastic car and well worth considering for your next family car.

Turn your kitchen dreams into reality!

Whether you dream of handcrafted oak cabinets, painted shaker-style dressers or sleek, glossy, modern units, Mulberry Kitchen Studios are on hand to help you achieve the look you desire

A

kitchen should be so much more than just a place to cook; At Mulberry it becomes a practical space at the very heart of your home, a place that reflects your tastes, your personality and your lifestyle just as much as it respects the character of your home. Because every kitchen is designed and made to order, there are no limitations on size or materials used; the kitchen is truly made for the individual. This doesn’t necessarily translate to more money, as our clients regularly comment that they are surprised and delighted that Mulberry can offer them a high quality bespoke kitchen for the same price (or maybe a little more) as a mass produced flatpacked kitchen.

Mulberry offer a free personal design service to ensure customers get exactly what they would like for a budget they are comfortable with. Our designers undertake a full survey of the intended kitchen space and guide the clients through the thought process of choosing their ideal kitchen, discussing essentials, dreams and budget in a relaxed atmosphere. The designs are presented to the client in computer generated 3D images, providing an ideal opportunity to discuss and try out other options that may have evolved. At Mulberry we really can do everything for you, from design through to site project management, removing walls and building work, right down to advising on decoration and soft furnishings. We have our own teams of fully qualified tradesmen. All the work we do is fully project managed, covered by comprehensive insurance and affiliated to all major trade bodies.

We pride ourselves on providing a customised service, right down to the very last detail, and we relish the responsibility of making our clients dream come true. At Mulberry we give you the time to realise your dreams, with over 35 years of experience turning thousands of thoughts and ideas into stunning reality. EAUX’s property expert Rechenda Smith takes a look at the most sophisticated places to live in Suffolk

S

uffolk is beautiful and diverse. From the burgeoning arts scene in the coastal nook of Aldeburgh, marina life in Ipswich or the rolling hills of Constable country, there is something for everyone. With average house prices at around £235,000, it is affordable too. Whether you’re a city slicker or country nester, the 500-square miles of land that is Suffolk offers excellent perks. Take your pick from rose-covered cottages, converted

98

barns and chic town-centre apartments. High quality schools, low crime rates and a raft of amenities and local sites, these aspects all make the county a fun place to live, work and play. If it’s the high life you’re after, Suffolk has a veritable feast of towns and villages that cater for the discerning buyer. We take a look at the top places to live for that slice of sophisticated Suffolk living.

IPSWICH MARINA On certain summer days, you could be mistaken for being in the French Riviera rather than the banks of the River Orwell. Formerly

an industrial shipping hub, the docks have been transformed into a destination living space with offices, bars, restaurants, boutique hotels and apartments ahoy. The Salthouse Harbour Hotel is the marina’s jewel in the crown, offering a boutique hotel experience. Numerous apartments have sprung up and are popular with both investors and homeowners alike. The marina is set to be further enhanced with a new £151million wet dock project, which will see a new road and pedestrian crossing link the docks with Stoke and an innovation ‘island’ in the middle of the river. Average house price in Ipswich: £214,435

WOODBRIDGE Situated on the banks of River Deben, there is something quintessentially British about Woodbridge. Perhaps it’s the idyll of ‘messing about on the river’, the historic town square or the prospect of a walk down the prom. Woodbridge is home to a flurry of houseboats and, with its beautiful scenery, is a haven for the artists, writers and designers who flock here for inspiration. Residents can enjoy the annual Regatta, private education at Woodbridge School, and golf and spa at Ufford Park. Vintage cinema with fish, chips and prosecco at The Riverside and dinner at The Crown at Woodbridge cannot be missed. Average house price in Woodbridge: £309,565

LAVENHAM Lavenham is by far one of the most beautiful villages in Suffolk. Formerly Britain’s capital of the wool trade, it was one of the richest wool towns in Britain and has a cultural heritage that will make even the most fervent history enthusiast squeal with excitement. It is also quaint and unpredictable. I was recently enjoying some brunch at The Lavenham Greyhound when two women on horseback trotted up the high street amongst the cars. This is what goes on in this olde-worlde slice of Suffolk. New residents can try local meats at Lavenham Butchers and unwind at the

nationally acclaimed The Swan at Lavenham Hotel and Spa. One of the most famous attractions is the Lavenham Guildhall, home of the wool guild of Corpus Christi, a stunning 16th Century building exemplifying the rich history of the village. The nearest secondary school is Great Cornard Upper School in Sudbury. Average house price in Lavenham: £318,387

the iconic Southwold lighthouse and, of course, fish and chips on the beach, it is one of the most expensive areas in Suffolk to buy property. New residents can stroll down the Southwold Pier with an ice cream from The Treat Parlour, catch a film at the Electric Theatre Palace, go shooting at High Lodge and go bird watching at RSPB Minsmere. Average house price in Southwold: £420,375

EAST BERGHOLT

ALDEBURGH

East Bergholt occupies a spot close to the Suffolk/Essex border and is one of the largest villages in the Stour Valley. This delightful village is very much part of Suffolk and home to the famous Grade I listed 17th century Flatford Mill, where renowned painter John Constable created many of his famous works. It also happens to be one of the most expensive places to live in the county, second only to Aldeburgh and Southwold. New residents can enjoy a slice of cake at Fountain House Tea Rooms or a glass of Suffolk real ale at The Red Lion public house. Average house price in East Bergholt: £388,288

Aldeburgh is the most expensive place to live in Suffolk with the average house price reaching a toe-curling £450,000. Perhaps not a place for first-time buyers, but that’s not what Aldeburgh is about: it’s affluence and class at its best. Aldeburgh, as well as the usual coastal attractions, is also a home to anyone with a passion for the arts. From performances at Aldeburgh Music, trips to Benjamin Britten’s former home The Red House, to farmers market and art at nearby Snape Maltings, it is a hive of activity for all culture vultures. Average house price in Aldeburgh: £451,133

SOUTHWOLD Situated on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, Southwold is a sophisticated seaside resort of the highest order. Home of Adnams Brewery,

At Your Jonathan Waters Estate Agents introduce their dedicated customer service team

T

he foundations of Jonathan Waters Estate Agents remain to give professional, honest advice. With over 350 years combined estate agency experience, our knowledge and professionalism is tangible and comprehensive; however, not content to rest on our laurels, the company is constantly striving to improve what we give to our customers. Having recently become members of the prestigious Guild of Professional Estate Agents, this has allowed us to consolidate our solid foundations into a more streamlined and modern estate agency to keep up with the demands of an ever changing market. With our membership of the Guild, we have also put in place a dedicated Customer Service Team, formed by John Knighton, manager of our Elite Homes division. Alan Cooper and Sharon Newman have been handpicked to carry out this important task we do and will keep in close communications with clients – even before you have come onto the market with us – to ensure that you are given the best customer service possible. John Knighton has over 45 years estate agency experience and we are fortunate that John’s expertise can flourish at Jonathan Waters Estate Agents, whilst heading up our Elite Homes division. Having achieved much success in this market, John can bring his

knowledge to what our sellers really want from their chosen estate agent. Alan Cooper will be one of the first people you speak to, even before you have placed your property on the market for sale, and he will continue to be in touch throughout your time with us. Having accomplished a long and successful career in the police force, his attention to detail is second to none and his direct, honest and professional approach means that you can be sure of what is happening at every stage of the process. Sharon has over ten years estate agency experience and is conversant in all aspects of agency. Having worked as a fully trained mortgage consultant in her previous career, she is prepared to answer any questions that vendors have as fully, clearly and willingly as possible – she notes that our customers move house occasionally, not every day of the week, so no question is ever too small to ask. At Jonathan Waters Estate Agents our main priority has always been our customers – we never take you for granted and hope that you will agree that, with our Customer Service team, we can meet and raise the high standards we have set ourselves for your benefit. Amazing Spaces

A

s a tourist attraction, a social enterprise and a charity, Eden is a unique and complex structure. Situated in Cornwall just inland from Carlyon Bay, the bubble-like Biomes have drawn in millions of visitors from all around the world, making it one of the most important and educational attractions in the United Kingdom. The building was designed by the awardwinning Grimshaw Architects, taking inspiration from the geodesic structures of American architect Buckminster Fuller, renowned designer behind the Montreal Biosphere in Canada. It took several years to gain funding and fully plan the site, with building eventually starting in early 2000 and Eden finally opening to the public in March 2001. Comprised of two Biomes, each consist of several smaller domes joined together, which are then joined in the middle by a Link building. Each Biome houses a different climate; the Rainforest Biome allows you to explore four different rainforest environments, ranging from tropical islands, Southeast Asia, West Africa and South America, whilst in the Mediterranean Biome you can enjoy the landscapes of South Africa, California and the Mediterranean.

Each of the iconic domes are crafted from a ‘tri-hex-net’ steel frame in two layers. The hexagonal ‘windows’ are made of a substance called ethylene tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE), or ‘cling film with attitude’ for short. Air is trapped between the two layers, acting as a thermal blanket to keep the different climates within at the correct temperature. Each of the hexagonal windows are robust enough to take the weight of a car, as well as being self-cleaning, environmentally friendly, and each can last for over 25 years. In fact, the structure is more likely to blow away than tumble down, so the Biomes are tied into the foundations with ground anchors. The Biomes are just the beginning though, serving as backdrop to gorgeous contemporary gardens, summer concerts and exciting yearround family entertainment. There is nothing quite like the Eden Project in the UK, or indeed anywhere in the world. It connects its guests with the living world, exploring how humanity can work towards a better future. Visit www.edenproject.com to find out more regarding Eden’s sustainability work, special events, or to plan your trip.

INTERESTING FACTS: • The Rainforest Biome covers about 16,000m² and is 50m high - you could fit the Tower of London inside it! The structure weighs 465 tonnes and contains 426 tonnes of air (dry air at standard temperature and pressure). • The Mediterranean Biome covers about 6540m² and is 30m high. • Together our Outdoor Gardens, Rainforest Biome and Mediterranean Biome cover about 13 hectares - the same as over 35 football pitches! • We used 2,000, 11m-long rock anchors to stabilise the sides of the clay pit. • In building the Biomes, we got into the Guinness Book of Records for using the most scaffolding, 230 miles of it! • During the build 43 million gallons of rainwater fell in 90 days. ver the years, we’ve seen the transformation of our kitchens from small, isolated areas to airy, open plan rooms, encompassing the idea of turning cooking and eating into a communal activity. Now is the time to take this concept one step further with the addition of an outdoor kitchen – a space where family and friends can enjoy socialising, great cuisine and the benefits of a natural environment. Although the content and décor of an outdoor kitchen is completely idiosyncratic to yourself and your home, there are a few basics to consider. With the help of the experts, we discuss the different ways you can get the most out of your outdoor kitchen.

THE LAYOUT The layout of your kitchen will determine its capacity and ease of use. Do you prefer a communal style space where everyone is involved in cooking and eating together? Make room for lots of seating. Love kitchen gadgets and plenty of space to prepare food? Ensure that you pencil in ample counter space. Jonathan Turner, senior designer at Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture, shares his advice on layouts: ‘Thanks to the inclemency of the British climate, there has been a tendency to associate outdoor kitchens with sunnier countries, where eating alfresco can be an all-year round pleasure. However, as a concept, the outdoor kitchen can be adapted very successfully. And, when combined with some of the latest kitchen architecture – for

110

2016MAY_PROPERT_OUTDOOR KITYCHEN.indd 110

example, an orangery or ultra-modern, glass extension – an ‘outdoor’ kitchen can become a reality. Rooms with expansive bi-fold glass doors work especially well and an island is the perfect focal point that brings together indoor and outdoor living. When the sun shines and the doors are open, it really does seem as though you have an outdoor kitchen. Specifying wow appliances, for example, a powerful wok burner or teppan grill, adds to the feel of being outdoors.’

Indian Ocean, London-based specialists in bespoke outdoor kitchens, state;

THE ESSENTIALS Whether your outdoor area is a small and cosy rooftop garden or a large and open plan patio area, your seating arrangement is one of the most important aspects to consider when planning the layout of your kitchen. You could opt for a ‘breakfast bar’ style eating area, where tall bar stools sit next to an island countertop; or, a ‘fire pit’ style arrangement might be more your thing, with all guests facing inwards in a more social layout. Next up is your choice of roofing. We can never predict English weather, so if your garden party suddenly takes a turn for the worst weatherwise, don’t take it inside! Position your roof in such a way that your guests have ample cover and keep the party going. You could erect a sturdy, but repositionable gazebo to provide you with versatile cover, or go for an extended roof for built in, year-round shelter. Another essential element of your outdoor kitchen is your cooking facility. Many people opt for a wood burning pizza oven, which provides an intense smoky flavour in food and, let’s face it, looks stunning; however, you can also go ultra-modern with a gorgeous stainless steel stove or grill.

Our gleaming grills are designed and manufactured to commercial standards and styled for a luxury aesthetic. The commercial heritage of the design allows the heat to be stabilised and released through the back of the grill using only brass burners and ceramic briquettes to ensure even heat distribution”. THE ADDED EXTRAS Once your essentials are in place, it’s time to think about the elements that bring warmth to the area, both literally and aesthetically. Adequate lighting makes a significant difference to any living area, inside or outside; however, there are various styles, fixings and colours to choose from. If your outdoor kitchen receives lots of natural light during the day, solar lights may be an economical option to consider; if not, you may want to contemplate fixed lighting such as wall sconces, spotlights or ceiling pendants. For versatile, portable

lighting, lanterns, candles and fairy lights can be positioned to alter the focal point of the space, drawing people towards a particular area such as the dinner table. British summers can be lovely and warm during the day, but if you intend for your garden party to carry on into the evening, a heater is a must. These are often freestanding for ease of repositioning, and come in many different styles. If its natural heating you’re after, a chiminea or firepit will work well; however, electric or gas can be just as effective. For heating with a difference, try Suffolk artisans Wildfire Bespoke.

Wildfire Bespoke creates stunning customised fire bowls and spheres, beautifully designed and handcrafted to order by Neil Jackson in Suffolk. Each fire pit is a truly unique piece of functional garden sculpture adding, light and heat to evenings in the garden all year round. Traditionally, the ‘hearth’ has always been the centre of the home, our fire pits enable you to take the hearth outdoors to become a sociable place for friends and family to gather.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES To make your area as comfortable as possible, introduce different textures and materials in

the form of scatter cushions, blankets and weather-proof seat covers. You could even hang a sheer curtain to create a division between areas or provide some privacy for guests. It’s important to remember that, however lavish your kitchen, you are outdoors. Make the most of your surroundings and introduce some potted plants, kempt trees and flower vases to your space. Keep it green with low maintenance cacti, succulents and spike plants or add colour with your favourite perennials such as yarrow or penstemon.

Country charm Savills is set to revive one of Melton’s iconic Edwardian buildings into three charming cottages

The golf course environment creates an attractive, semi rural setting only about a mile from the village of Melton. The market town of Woodbridge, with its picturesque narrow streets lined with interesting historic buildings, is approximately two miles away, so facilities are close by. It’s a great base from which to explore this fascinating part of the county.

hitwell House, an elegant Edwardian building originally part of St Audry’s Hospital near the market town of Woodbridge, is set to be transformed into three charming cottages. Built in the 1900s, the single storey property is not listed but lies within the curtilage of the Grade II listed former hospital, which has itself been converted into apartments and mews houses as part of the beautiful and sought-after residential development, Melton Park. Melton Park offers an exceedingly well thought-out blend of homes which features listed period architecture and sympathetically designed contemporary style. Whitwell House is approached through stunning parkland and is set in an elevated

There are spectacular golf course views to the south, west and east, while to the north lies a secluded area of mature woodland. The three cottages, named Links Cottage, Fairway Cottage and Eagle Cottage, have been designed to make optimum use of the existing architectural features in a contemporary context. Each has three bedrooms, an en suite bathroom to the main bedroom and engineered oak flooring throughout the spacious living areas. Every cottage has a private garden to the rear as well as garaging.

For the rail commuter, some direct services run through to London’s Liverpool Street Station from Woodbridge. More frequent services are available from Ipswich, Suffolk’s county town, reaching London from just over an hour. The properties are available through Savills Ipswich with guide prices starting at £499,000. An open day is being held on Saturday 7th May from 10am to 1pm. For more information, contact Max Turner on 01473 234800.

Max Turner of Savills Ipswich new homes team comments: “This new addition to the popular Melton Park development is likely to be in demand. The conversion of Whitwell House by experienced and sympathetic developer, Hillhouse Investments, has managed to keep a real sense of the original building at the same time as providing the bright, modern layouts that modern buyers are seeking.

The importance of your last Will and Testament The document that distributes all your worldly gifts upon your death is something to be taken seriously, explains Emma Woollard from Blocks Solicitors

A

Will can cause more stress for your loved ones than necessary.

surprising number of us don’t bother or don’t quite get around to writing a Will.

As long as it is prepared in accordance with the Wills Act 1837 you can write it on a beer mat, copy it from the internet, or you could choose to use a solicitor. The financial pressures of modern society means that most beneficiaries named in a Will could receive the largest cash payout of their lives, however inevitably disputes might arise should a disappointed beneficiary take action to gain a greater share of the estate. The Will determines not only who gets what, but also the amount of inheritance tax payable upon the death of the testator. A badly drafted

116

2016MAY_BUSINESS_BLOCKS.indd 116

Negative press puts a lot of people off writing a Will. A Will is a crucial document and provides clarity and structure to what will inevitably be an upsetting and difficult time following your death. • If you want to exclude an adult child from receiving an inheritance, then the team at Blocks Solicitors can ensure you receive the best advice to try and mitigate a future claim. • If you own a business then you may wish to ensure your Will anticipates what will happen, enabling your death to be as taxefficient as possible. • If you are a co-habiting couple then without a Will your partner may not inherit what they are expecting, or what you would like them to.

• If you have children from more than one relationship, a Will can clarify who is to receive what, removing the possibility that they may be inadvertently disinherited. Many people also think that making a Will hastens death, but doing nothing will guarantee problems. We at Blocks recommend that you review your Will at least every five years or if there is a significant life event, such as a marriage, having children, grandchildren, retirement, or even receiving your own inheritance. It is definitely something to put a little higher up the “the do” list! Blocks are proud to have been offering sound, supportive, straightforward legal advice to Suffolk for over 125 years. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A BRITISH BRAND? It gives us great pride to be a Britishbased, family brand. For over 82 years we have strived for perfection in every endeavour we have undertaken. Football, golf, cricket, tiddlywinks, croquet, the Spitfire, railways, steam engines, hovercrafts, penicillin, gravity, longitude, the jet engine, the worldwide web, evolution, sticky toffee pudding, the saucy seaside postcard, the stamp, and to that very succinct list of what Britain has given the world, we can also very proudly add iCandy. As a company established in London we are inordinately proud of our design and manufacturing pedigree and the creativity that is achieved by living in what is in our opinion the world’s greatest city and country.

Nothing looks or feels like an iCandy. The iCandy recipe for innovation is simple, exceptional British craftsmanship and no limits.

HOW DID THE COMPANY BEGIN? Business at iCandy has always been a family affair, growing up myself and brother Warren (pictured) absorbed manufacturing knowledge from our grandfather Charles, who had founded a fashion company in 1933. State-of-the-art product innovation and development has allowed us to push the boundaries and cater for parents who want and deserve more. One of our most significant moments to date was the birth of the Apple 2 Pear. As the world’s first single-to-double pushchair in a single footprint, it is the

Extensions to

Tax Free Savings Graham Doubtfire, Private Client Tax Director at Scrutton Bland, gives us his first thoughts on the changes to Tax Free Savings following George Osborne’s 2016 Budget Speech

MORE MONEY IN YOUR ISA At present you can save up to £15,240 per annum in an Individual Savings Account (ISA). The Chancellor announced that, with effect from 6th April 2017 this will increase to £20,000 per annum. For most people this is a significant sum to tuck away in a tax-free savings account each year, whilst being able to retain full access to those funds in an emergency.

PENSION TAX RELIEF STILL A GOOD OPTION Graham commented, “For Higher Rate and Additional Rate tax payers, pensions can still be a more tax efficient savings vehicle and can produce some permanent tax savings, where relief is gained at 40% or 45%. For many retirees the income is then only taxed at 20%, and a tax free lump sum can be withdrawn on retirement.” “Many of our clients put, say, £10,000 into their pension each year, which only costs them £6,000 after tax relief. When the income is withdrawn, if they are no longer higher rate taxpayers (as many aren’t in retirement), £2,500 can be taken as a tax free lump sum and £7,500 taken as income taxed at 20%, meaning there is an income tax charge of £1,500. This means they are left with a net cash sum of £8,500, which represents an increase through tax relief alone of £2,500, or over 40% of the new amount invested. As well as younger savers, for someone who is aged

over 55 this should be the first port of call for their savings.”

NEW ISA FOR YOUNGER SAVERS “The Private Client Team at Scrutton Bland were surprised by the announcement of the Lifetime ISA,” says Graham. “This could be of particular benefit to younger savers (since you have to be under 40 to open one). These will be available from April 2017 and benefit from a 25% bonus on any money added before your 50th birthday.”

This bonus is lost if the Lifetime ISA money is not used towards a deposit on a first home, or if the money is withdrawn before the age of 60. What this could mean for someone who is perhaps thinking about saving for their first home, but is also mindful of pension planning at an early age, is that they will be able to use a Lifetime ISA to get the best of both worlds.”

Graham explains further, “If they are a basic rate taxpayer then the 25% Lifetime ISA is the same as the tax relief they would get investing into a pension, but there are added benefits. All of the savings would be tax free provided the funds are withdrawn as above, rather than the 25% lump sum in a pension.”

HOW DOES GRAHAM CONSIDER THIS BUDGET REFLECTS THE GOVERNMENT’S STRATEGY? “I wonder whether these are the first steps in the government’s attempts to change how we save for the long term and an extension of their desire to further restrict the tax relief on long-term retirement savings.”

Scrutton Bland provides independent advice on pension contributions and pension tax relief. Our Private Client Service brings together our independent financial advisers, tax advisers and insurance professionals to operate a streamlined process to help manage and protect your wealth, assets and investment portfolio. Passing

on

your

wealth

Ray Pettit, director of Galleon Wealth Management, provides some advice on how to leave your wealth to the right people at the right time WHAT IS INHERITANCE TAX? Inheritance tax is a tax on the assets that belong to you when you die. Assets include the total of everything owned by you and a share of anything owned jointly. The most common assets usually include; • Personal property • Property/land • Cash • Shares • Future inheritances • Chattels • Life insurance • Death benefits, not in trust

REDUCE YOUR INHERITANCE TAX There are a range of options that help reduce the potential tax liability on your death. Investing a little time now means you could rest easy, knowing that the people you want to leave your possessions and wealth to will not be faced with an unexpected bill to pay on your death. Some of the options here are outlined, however speak to your financial adviser who will be able to discuss the options that are right for your own personal circumstance.

MAKE A WILL AND KEEP IT UP TO DATE The first step to estate planning is to make a Will, if you’ve not made one already. Without a Will your estate will be subject to intestacy

122

2016MAY_BUSINESS_GALLEON.indd 122

rules, which could mean that the things you leave behind don’t go to the people you would have chosen. At Galleon Wealth Management we can assist you with the writing and implementation of your will and ensure its continued suitability with regular reviews.

EXEMPTIONS There are a number of exemptions that could be used to immediately reduce the value of your estate. If used correctly they are the most efficient way to reduce any inheritance tax bill; • Annual exemption allowance: You can gift up to £3,000 each year. Where total gifts in a year fall short of this allowance, the balance can be carried over to the following year and added to that year’s allowance. • Spouse exemption: For most married couples they can ensure no inheritance tax is payable by arranging, through a Will, that on first death all the deceased spouse’s assets pass to the surviving spouse. Other exemptions; • • • • •

Wedding gift/civil partnership ceremony gifts Parents can receive up to £5,000 Grandparents can receive up to £2,500 Anyone else can receive up to £1,000 Small gifts of up to £250 can be given to as many individuals as you like per tax year • You can gift up to 10% of the value of your net estate in your Will to charity and reduce the amount of inheritance tax paid to 36%

TRUSTS A trust is a legal arrangement where a person (trustee) holds assets for the good of one or more beneficiaries. Trusts are complicated and must be set up carefully. At Galleon Wealth Management we specialise in assisting both new and existing clients in setting up appropriate arrangements to ensure that their estates are both relevant and tax efficient. Let Galleon Wealth Management successfully navigate your financial future and help protect your wealth & estate. Contact us today where we will be happy to arrange an initial no obligation meeting to discuss your requirements.

The information is our understanding, as at March 2016, of current taxation, legislation and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) practice, all of which are liable to change without notice. The impact of taxation (and any tax reliefs) depends on individual circumstance.
