ello! Welcome to our daffodilicious spring edit of the super-duper Maggie & Rose Magazine. We write this amidst a sea of flying pancakes, the clubs are buzzing with foodie goodness (wood fired pizzas in Kensington anyone?), and we feel a hop and a spring in our step as spring approaches. In this Edit we are continuing our mission of health with a feature on Ella Woodward, poster girl for raw and delicious living, plus an interview with top Chiswick member and ex-England rugby player Matt Dawson and his yummy new superfood range. Rose samples the Food Stork, celebrating the arrival of spring babies with a fridge full of nutritious meals for time-poor parents.

Our events schedule is brimming, from parenting workshops and Mother’s Day treats to the best Easter holiday clubs and parties across both clubs. We couldn’t resist joining forces with fashion powerhouse Burberry at their Knightsbridge store for a special Easter shop & play event (early booking advised – epic times guaranteed). We love hearing from you on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook – check in to win cool things like ski suits, and keep the comments coming, your support is mindblowing. Three cheers for sunshine and chocolate eggs! Love,

HAVING SOMEONE TO TALK TO ... t is a crazy world that we live in and never in a million years did I ever think I would need or want a therapist – it is such an American concept. Yet here I am, manic, stressed and overworked, failing on the parenting front ( have forgotten to pick my kids up so many times from school of late they are threatening to call socialservices!!)with all the pressure to juggle mother hood, work and life in general I now cannot live without mine!! Being a mum inherently changes a woman, it is something that our husbands will never understand. We give up a piece of ourselves to become mothers and whilst it is fiercely rewarding this maternal guilt thing doesn’t allow us to be honest about the fact that it is lonely, isolating and sometimes downright boring! (cue instant hate tweets from earth mothers! ) The sad story in the news a few weeks ago of a mother of three with postnatal depression taking her own life, and lots of chats with friends who feel down after becoming a mother, made me realise that everyone needs someone impartial to talk to, someone with whom you can

I

6

let it all out, no judgement – and more people than you think have therapists! It is not a taboo thing anymore, no longer just for the insane (although in my case I am pretty sure mine thinks I am!) Suffering in silence is not good for the body and soul. So I am sharing my person with anyone reading this that just needs to talk. Her name is Alison, her company is ParentingTutor. She keeps me sane, brings me back to earth and tells me when I am being out of order! She is a mum, business woman and has the right balance of sensitivity and discipline to push me to be a happier person. Look out for her handy parenting coffee groups across both clubs in our upcoming events page. Parentingtutor.co.uk

I’M STORKING YOU! ROSE REVIEWS THE FOOD STORK

“C

ongratulations!” shouts my friend, as she bowls through my door with an armful of fabulous wrapping containing some very lovely cashmere something, some gossip from the night before and high heels in a bag for the night out ahead. It’s 6pm on a Tuesday in 2007, and I’m on day 5 of motherhood. My friend is a jewelry designer living in Notting Hill with no child on the horizon and a very busy social life (she now has 2, ha!). I’m in Shepherds Bush, way out of my comfort zone and freefalling to baby zone. So there I am, standing in my nightie and socks, in a state of shock. Still holding my first child, and not quite sure where or how to put

her down, baby gets a good squishing as said friend goes in for the generous ‘You’ve Had a Baby’ hug. Don’t get me wrong - Jellycat teddies and cashmere blankets are lovely. They are! But, when you are in the Twilight Zone of new-baby-no-sleepno-clue, there’s only so much cashmere you can hide in before you realise it’s lunchtime and the Ocado order is still sitting in your online basket and not in your realtime fridge! Enter The Food Stork – aka Fleur Sladen, the (much younger, way gorgeous) Mrs. Doubtfire of food delivery for new mums. Using natural and locally sourced food crammed with nutrients and yumminess, a Food Stork delivery is a new mum’s (and poor starving father’s) guardian angel, providing the support and nurture that we new mums don’t have time to give

ourselves. It’s a cornucopia of whole heat-uppable meals that, frankly, even without children, I’d never achieve. The food itself comes in easy packaging that you can pop into your fridge or freezer, then plop right into a saucepan and reheat. How it’s done: you choose your box or select dishes (always, always include the brownies, they’ve won awards! Gold ones!), select your recipient, tap out a lovely message, and the box is delivered within 72 hours. Brilliant. So great has the Stork business proven, Fleur is now branching into providing salads, sarnies and sweets on location for businesses. No excuses for eating badly ever again (apart from Mondays when the Food Stork don’t deliver –then Itsu, you’re in business). Thefoodstork.com

FROM SUGAR MONSTER TO HEALTHY HERO, ROSE REVIEWS SUPERBLOGGER AND HEALTHY FOODIE ELLA WOODWARD, DISCOVERING THAT HEALTHY LIVING ISN’T AS SCARY AS SHE FEARED... ur lovely intern Em was chatting with Belles about her awesome cheflets cookery classes, this term focussing on different chefs, and suggested that Belles look at doing a superfood class based on Ella Woodward’s food blog. Ella Who? Read on.

O

First impressions on opening the Deliciously Ella (deliciouslyella.com) blog page were, “gosh she’s pretty” and “I’ll never ever ever have time to eat or live like that.” Wrong, says Ella, whose diet centered around gummy bears, coca cola and paninis until she was bedbound by crippling illness Postural Tachycardia Syndrome which zaps your strength, gives

you blackouts and generally makes life a great big struggle. After 6 months of prescribed meds and no improvement, Ella decided to do it her way, replacing drugs & medication with a holistic healthy approach. Overnight, she ditched meat, dairy, gluten and processed sugar, and learnt by trial and error to create dishes that were not just healthy (all ingredients are plant based), but delicious and easy to make too, and just weeks after staying on track with what she put in her body, she noticed a huge improvement in her health. For us mortals who haven’t nailed the 5:2 diet, Ella is adamant her method is not a diet, but a fulfilling, easy and energy giving way of life. It’s a celebration, she says, of natural healthy food. Her enthusiasm is certainly compelling, and so is Ella’s glow- us time-poor sleep deprived parents need some of that! Sold yet? Enter Maggie, the world’s busiest mum and workerbee. If her mother isn’t filling her fridge (and family) then Waitrose is. However, being Maggie, she made some time to test out some of Deliciously Ella’s recipes and see if “Ella’s easy” = normal folk easy. And, quelle surprise, the Bolger family made Sweet Potato brownies which took “no time” and was a “fun activity” and resulted in “happy kids, happy husband, happy home!” Ok, admittedly Maggie didn’t tell her husband that the brownies had sweet potato in them, and when he found

8

out he gagged, but up to that point he had scoffed THREE in a row. And he is still thin. You see? It’s not a diet but it doesn’t make you porky - score! So, we are sold, thank you lovely Em for the heads up, and now there’s an App, and it’s number 1 in Itunes, and we love Ella, and we know you will too.

Almost all supermarket products that are labeled WOODWA A as ‘healthy,’ such as dairy free butter, gluten L RD EL free rolls and pizzas, soymilk and soy yoghurts, store bought almond milk etc – these items tend to be full of weird additives and chemicals that your body cannot digest, they’re really not much better than the gluten/dairy alternatives.

Member recommendation Hitchin Lavender Farm

Purple was all we saw when we got to the fields of lavender! The smell in the air was magnificent as the fragrance wafted from the rows and rows of the short shrub and into our nostrils. No, this wasn’t Provence, France, but literally just in our backyard, about an hour’s drive away from Central London. This wonderful place is Hitchin Lavender Farm. Situated 42 miles from Maggie & Rose Kensington just off the A1 and easily accessible by car, Hitchin Lavender is a wonder to behold if you’ve never been to a lavender farm before. The rows of lavender are great for kids to run around and incredibly picturesque. We’d recommend keeping your phones in your pocket and bring along a fancy camera if you own one. Grown next to the lavender is also a big patch of sunflowers. The second time we visited Hitchin Lavender, the sunflowers were approximately 4 feet high, taller than Nadya at the time! If the sunflowers are in bloom when you visit the farm, your standard entrance fee allows you to pick one sunflower stalk to bring back. The best time to visit the farm to see both the lavender and sunflowers in bloom is during the summer months of around June to August. We would highly recommend following Hitchin Lavender’s Facebook page as they provide all the information you’d need about the status of the lavender and sunflower blooms. Visiting Hitchin Lavender is definitely recommended as an awesome way to spend the day out in the great outdoors! Hitchinlavender.com

01/ Decorate your side plate, using the doilies, tissue and feathers, collage style. Overlap everything and remember to do both sides. Leave to dry for a bit.

02 /

Now you need to make a base, using the headband, pudding bowl plate and pipe cleaners. Make two holes on either side of the bowl and thread the pipe cleaners through making a loop on the inside. Thread the headband through the loop, pull tight and twist the pipe cleaners to hold in place.

04/

Make tissue flowers by scrunching up the tissue paper. Place these tissue flowers on the base pudding bowl with glue, add more feathers and decorate until fully covered.

03/ Try on your base hat and decide where you want to put your big plate, then carefully staple it to the base plate. (If the angle is not right for stapling you can use a hot glue gun, or make holes and use pipe cleaners as before) Finish off by 05/ deciding where to put your butterflies.
