NEWSLETTER AND TRAINING CALENDAR——SUMMER 2016 Welcome Summer 2016, goodbye to our wet, chilly spring weather! We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback about our new newsletter and calendar format. Just remember our training calendar includes all of our locations in Baltimore, Harford and Cecil Counties combined and to pay close attention to training locations. NEW COURSE-Mental Heath First Aid Starting in August, Child Care Links will begin offering a new class called “Mental Health First Aid” for providers and other interested participants. Although this class is not required, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, along with other national agencies, developed the class for the purpose of improving the mental health knowledge and skills of the public in responding to early-stage mental illnesses and mental health crises. The class is being offered to assist child care providers in dealing with individuals developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The course is most relevant in situations where it becomes apparent to others that persons in their social network are developing serious mental health problems. With increasing news reports of issues in the workplace, domestic or adultchild issues, this class will assist participants in a mental health emergency and offer support to someone who appears to be in emotional distress. This class will be offered at our Harford location this summer and our Dundalk location this fall. This is a certification class, participants will receive a certificate for this 8 hour class. Currently, there are no COK hours attached to this class. Mental Health First Aid will take place on two, 4-hour Saturday sessions. Cost is $40. Please call our training registrar with any questions.

MSDE Launches Redesigned Early Childhood Website The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has launched the redesigned Early Childhood Division website. The new website provides easy access to the most frequently sought information and valuable resources for the early childhood community in Maryland. The website was redesigned to better engage the early childhood community, foster communication, and address the needs of stakeholders interested in locating information quickly on the site. The early childhood website integrates with the MSDE website, offering a unified web presence and providing easy access to important early childhood information at the local and state level. Visitors to the website will notice a marked difference in the layout. Easy navigation to family, provider and educator sections is available through the “Icon” functionality. Enhancements include language translation, easy-to-find local contact information, a user-friendly upcoming-events feature, and access to child care and early education information. A new feature is the “Resource Library,” which provides a centralized location for files, reports, and forms, and pulls together all the relevant information and documents in a site search. Visit the Maryland State Department of Education website at www.marylandpublicschools.org. The Division of Early Childhood Development website may also be accessed by visiting http:// earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org/.

New Judy Center at Hawthorne Elementary School Recently a new Judith P. Hoyer Early Care Center (Judy Center) opened at Hawthorne Elementary in the Middle River area. Rebecca Lindsey, Ed.D, is at the helm of this brand new Judy Center as the Facilitator. The goal of the Judy Center is to provide services to young children and their families that live in the Hawthorne ES district. The Judy Center works with all prior environments children attend before entering school, including Head Start, family child care homes, child care centers, nursery schools and children who stay home with a parent or relative. Working with children birth to age five also allows the Judy Center to identify children with developmental delays or other special needs. The Hawthorne Judy Center is busy establishing partnerships with many local service providers such as BCPL, Infants and Toddlers, Child Find and Child Care Links, just to name a few. These partnerships will help provide multiple services to support the goal of supporting families and preparing children to enter school ready to learn and be successful. If you live in the Hawthorne ES area or work with children who do, contact Rebecca Lindsey to see how you can get involved! Rebecca Lindsey 410-887-0138 rlindsey@bcps.org
