AT T R A C T I O N S The lively Lahti region is full of interesting events, places and tourist attractions. SPORTS CENTRE includes ski jumps, a skiing stadium, Restaurant Voitto, a large event hall, a trade fair hall, sports center, an ice stadium, the Ski Museum, a central sports field and an area for biathlon. In the the summertime they are used as mountain biking and outdoor exercising routes. 1. VÄÄKSY CANAL ASIKKALA is located on both sides of two lakes (Lake Päijänne and Lake Vesijärvi). At the Vääksy Canal, you can stop and see locking and enjoy the sunny summer days. The structure of the parish, charming little villages and versatile services make Asikkala a memorable place.

The ITÄ-HÄME MUSEUM located in Hartola is the regional museum for seven parishes. Items on display in the museum include mansion interiors from the beginning of the 19th century, the office of writer Maila Talvio, a room dedicated to the memory of poet Uuno Kailas, and a smoke cottage from the 17th century. The museum is housed in the former Koskipää mansion, located on the banks of the river Tainionvirta. www.ihmuseo.fi WATER ORGAN A musical fountain in Pikku-Vesijärvi pond. Music from movies, musicals and other well-known classics. The show consists of music and spectacular water jets. Shows daily at 1 pm and 6 pm from June to the end of August. CONGRESS AND CONCERT CENTRE SIBELIUS HALL is the largest public wooden building built in Finland in the past hundred years. The concert hall has unique acoustics. The hall seats 1250 people, and it is the venue for both classical and contemporary concerts.

LAHTI CITY HALL Designed by Eliel Saarinen, the Lahti City Hall was built in 1912 and completely restored in 1985. There is lunch restaurant Tyrmä (Dungeon) on the basement. Guided tours are available on order, Tel. +358 (0)3 734 9792.

CHURCH OF THE CROSS is designed by academician Alvar Aalto. Built in 1978, the simplified church’s exterior face opening to the marketplace is dominated by a large cross consisting of 52 windows, one for each week of the year. Lahti is a part of The Network of Alvar Aalto Cities. IITTI PARISH VILLAGE was named Finland’s Most Beautiful Village in 1990. The rustic

HOLLOLA MEDIEVAL STONE CHURCH is the most important medieval monument in the Lahti region. It was completed in its current form between 1495 and 1510 and is well known for its well-kept wooden sculptures. URAJÄRVI MANOR MUSEUM is Finland’s oldest manor museum. Its oldest buildings date back to the 1770s, and the main building was built in 1806. The Empire style main building includes the home of Lilly and Hugo von Heideman from the beginning of the 20th century. The siblings made the annex into a museum when they were still alive. The charming master Hugo’s path takes you to a vantage point called Valhalla with an antique-style semicircle colonnade built in 1913.

IITTI MUSIC FESTIVAL The key venue is the idyllic Iitti parish village and its 300-year-old wooden church that is one of the most valuable churches in Finland. STU N N I N G N ATU R E When was the last time you spent a night camping in a tent, grilled sausages under a lean-to, went river fishing, or tracked migratory birds while enjoying the sunrise? There are several LEAN-TOS in the Lahti regio that are open to anyone who abides by the Finnish everyman’s rights. All those who use a leanto must ensure that the surroundings stay clean.

THE KIIKUNLÄHDE natural spring is not only the largest, but also the most beautiful spring in Finland. Its magical turquoise-coloured waters invite you to stare into them and forget about time.

TAINIONVIRTA is a river in southern Finland. It starts from Lake Jääsjärvi and empties into Lake Päijänne. You can fish with both lures and flyfishing gear in Tainionvirta River.

THE LINNAISTENSUO swamp is a protected ombrotrophic raised bog of some 200 hectares. The protected area was formed to save a representative natural sample of the Päijänne Tavastia bog. The bog is accessed by duckboards.

NATURE CONSERVATION AREA OF LAPAKISTO One of the most stunning places is Pitkäjärvenvuori, a hill that rises to about 45 meters above Lake Pitkäjärvi. Various routes of different lengths in the area are marked on the trees with distinct colours. LOVELY KELVENNE in the Padasjoki municipality is one of the largest and nicest high islands of Finland. An 8 km long hiking trail runs through the island of Kelvenne and is indicated with blue marks. There are also several campfire sites. THE PIRUNPESÄ canyon is surrounded in places by vertical cliffs of 5–20 metres in height. A nature trail circles the area and provides a view of Lake Vesijärvi. There is a rest stop on the flank of the rocky Pirunpesä canyon. JUUSTOPOLKU (“CHEESE PATH”) is an old route that connects Heinola and Vuolenkoski. Juustopolku travels alongside the Kymijoki river, but mostly in forested areas. The most interesting sight on the 18-kilometre route is Kupparinkivi, a large erratic boulder from the last ice age.

LANU SCULPTURE PARK of artist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park. In Lanu Park there is twelve human figures manufactured from reinforced concrete. PULKKILANHARJU is part of the Päijänne National Park. The signs along the 8 km route tell you about the nature, geology and history of the area. Harju is also a good place to watch birds. The 31-kilometre AURINKO-ILVES (“SUN-LYNX”) ROUTE starts at Vääksy in Asikkala and ends at the Evo hiking area. You should reserve a couple of days to cover the entire route. There are some uphill slopes, and parts of the route are somewhat challenging. ILVESREITTI (“LYNX ROUTE”) is a lighted 12-kilometre hiking route between Heinola and Vierumäki. The surrounding lakes and ridges offer wonderful scenery and peaceful nature.

The stars of the Kuninkuusravit (“Royalty”) trotting event are the best, most handsome and majestic Finnish horses. This summer, it will be 95 years from the first Kuninkuusravit event. HEINOLA BIRD SANCTUARY is home to large talking parrots, cockatoos, lories, jacos, amazons, peacocks and different kinds of pet fowl. Entrance free of charge.

There are several indoor playgrounds. LEOS LEIKKIMAA has climbing frames, a ball pit, tunnels, trampolines, bicycles, ball cannons and slides. HOPLOP is an activity and adventure park full of adventure labyrinths, trampolines, electric cars, and speedy slides. The jungle-inspired PAPU PARK indoor playground has climbing and balancing activities, a digital wall game and a foam rubber pit, among other things. TYKKIMÄKI ACTIONPARK, in contrast, is a sporty indoor activity park for the entire family. MINIGOLF CENTRE LAUNE is one of Europe’s largest mini golf centers. A hectare size area has four different types of mini-golf courses. DISC GOLF taken Päijät-Häme by storm. You can find several courses of different lengths and difficulties. AT FARM ANIMAL YARD OLGAN FARMI you can meet a donkey, a cow, alpacas, sheep, goats, bunnies, horses and chickens, among others. On the KILKKILÄ FARM lure chickens and peacocks. You can also discover ostriches, alpacas, reindeer, angoracans and miniature horses. THE FAMILY PARK in Lahti is a place for the entire family, with experiences both outdoors and indoors. The park includes slides, climbing equipment, a traffic town, cottages for hobbies and a fortress. Entrance free of charge. The eleven adventure tracks at VIERUMÄKI FLOWPARK have been built in trees. One of them is a test track, two are for children (below 120 cm in height) and three are slides. The rest are top rope tracks that include swinging paths, jumping with vines and sliding along wire ropes, for example.

The band has opened its own museum in Hennala where the history of the group from the early days to the present is illustrated. Apulandia includes a café and the band’s own facilities. Apulandia 1. TV AND RADIO MUSEUM MASTOLA’S exhibition is an overview of Finnish program production. The media tunnel allows you to watch and listen to the audience’s favorite programs from past decades. www.lahdenmuseot.fi MUSEOKIOSKI (MUSEUM KIOSK) is a pop-up venue in the middle of Lahti. Museokioski introduces exhibitions of the Historical Museum, the Art Museum and the Poster Museum, which are currently under renovation or construction. Workshops are also arranged at the Museokioski and there is a museum shop. FINNISH AVIATION MUSEUM Based on a decision of the Finnish Air Force, Vesivehmaa Airport has been used as a storage area for airplanes

taken out of use since 1948. The museum is open on Saturdays and for groups by appointment at other times.

Experienced and promising artists are invited to the traditional exhibition of the MAILA TALVIO PARLOUR each year. The parlour is at a beautiful location in the yard of Vanha-Koskipää Manor dating back to the mid-1700s in Hartola. Summer exhibition 9 June - 18 August.

THE PINXINMÄKI ART EXHIBITION in Suopelto, Sysmä has established its place at the forefront of Finland’s summer exhibitions. www.pinxinmaki.fi

DANIELSON-KALMARI VILLA is a beautiful historical building. Two rooms of the villa have been turned into a museum and the other rooms host a variety of culture events. HERRA HELISMAAN LEMPILAULU (“Mr Helismaa’s Favourite Song”) The play is a story of the youth of the master lyricist Reino Helismaa in Lahti. The show is based on the programme of a social evening created by Helismaa in the 1930s in Lahti and the singspiel Etelämeren satu (“Story of the South Sea”). 2–11 August. ÄITEE JA KILPASISKOT KESÄ 1957 (“Äitee and Her Competitors in the Summer of 1957”) Olympic gold medalist Siiri “Äitee” Rantanen irons the shirt of her husband, Kalle, and mends her son’s trousers before starting her preparations for the World Championships in her home town Lahti. At the Karpalo field in the Lahti Sports Centre 28 June - 7 July. 1. KEEPING UP APPEARANCES Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”) storms into the

lives of her nearest and dearest yet again. Emmet from next door is directing a play, and naturally Hyacinth has to barge in. 13 June - 28 July. VANHAN PUUKIRKON TARINA (“Story of the Old Wooden Church”) In 1890, the residents of Lahti built a wooden church on Kolkanmäki hill in the middle of the township. The own church housed joy and sorrow, weddings and funerals – thoughts that became part of the everyday lives and celebrations of people in Lahti. At Kirkkopuisto park in Lahti 20–28 July.

ARVOVIERAS (“Distinguished Guest”) Urajärvi is living a bright era of rebuilding. A repository of the University of Helsinki has been built in the area, and its grand opening will be soon. Locals and visitors meet at the manor. Is it the famous ghost of the manor, or is the ghost just a regular resident? 29 June - 20 July. KILJUSEN HERRASVÄKI (“That Kiljunen Family”) Pesäkallio will not be silent this year, either, as the unique and lively family all Finns love, that Kiljunen family, will be on stage. 30 June - 11 August.

AURINGON LAPSET (“Children of the Sun”) is a nostalgic musical journey in time to the golden era of Finnish social evenings. The tradition of social evenings petered out in the early 1960s due to the introduction of television and the slow decline of rural areas. Matti Louhivuori, one of the stars of the era, will take us on a journey with the “Children of the Sun”. At Sysmä theatre house 14–28 July.
