For this reason, the status of a Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) destination has been applied for the Lahti region. The region is also well-known for its excellent outdoor exercising opportunities. You will find great hiking and cycling routes and lean-tos where you can stop to light a fire and roast some sausages. Come winter, you can dig out your skis and tour skates, and head to enjoy the first snow, ski slopes and ice rinks. The two-storey rooms of Seurahuone Loft House in the heart of Lahti and the new, modern Fennada Hotel in Vierumäki add a touch of luxury to your accommodation. If you’re looking for something more traditional, there are plenty of rental cottages in the region to suit every need and every party. And what about the food! Here you can taste the authentic lihamuki (literally a mug full of meat and spices, a local speciality), enjoy a glass of wine made in Hollola and awarded with numerous gold medals, or have the best whisky in the world. There are first snow ski routes in Lahti, Vierumäki, Sysmä and Asikkala.

Skiing on the first snow SKIING ALREADY IN DECEMBER! Artificial snow preserved from last winter has survived the hot summer. When the weather cools down, the snow cannons will be switched on, the stored snow will be carted to the terrain and the preparation of the first ski route of the season will start. You can ski on the first snow already in December, during the first freezing weather. The traditional 1.5 km long first snow ski route in Lahti can be found near the largest of the ski jumps. In addition to Lahti, there are first snow ski routes in Sysmä, Vierumäki and Asikkala. ■

Among other interesting sights, the area includes the extensive Salpausselkä-Tiirismaa outdoor recreation area in Lahti and Hollola, Lake Vesijärvi, Heinola National Urban Park and Päijänne National Park in Padasjoki, Asikkala and Sysmä. www.visitlahti.fi/en/salpausselka-geopark OUTDOOR EXERCISING ROUTES

LAPAKISTO nature reserve in Nastola, Lahti, has a diverse natural environment with small lakes, wetland and rocky cliffs. There are five marked routes in the area, with several campfire sites and two lean-tos. The easiest access to the routes is from the parking area along Ristikankaantie road.

There are plenty of outdoor exercising routes in the vicinity of Hollola municipal centre that can be used when there is now snow on the ground. SALPAUSSELÄN SUOREITTI (“the Salpausselkä Mire Trail”) travels through three mires. The 10.5 km route includes forest paths and duckboards. Part of the route is also accessible when there is snow on the ground. The terrain of the 4.5 km TIIRISMAAN KIERROS (“Tiirismaa route”) is varied and extremely rocky in places. Classified as medium in terms of difficulty, the route includes a lean-to and the PIRUNPESÄ gorge, among other sights. The area has a good network of ski routes when there is snow. The PAISTJÄRVI area in Heinola offers a wonderful setting for hiking. You will be able to enjoy wilderness atmosphere and diverse nature. The area’s most famous sights include PIRUNKIRKKO cliff and Lake Sonnanen, which is known for its especially clear water. There are approximately 9 kilometres of marked routes in the area. When there is snow on the ground, some of the routes are used as skiing tracks. The multipurpose trails, on the other hand, are accessible on foot and by mountain bike all year round.

Along the route that consists of four sections, you will see the surroundings of Tainionvirta rapids, an arched bridge at Ekonkoski rapids, a mire forest and cultural sites. The easy-tofollow marked route consists of trails, sandy roads and footpaths. There is a place where you can dip into a hole in the ice of a lake in the wintertime close to the Itä-Häme Museum. HIIDENSAARI island and HIIDENVUORI hill in Iitti form an important national landscape. There are plenty of trails on Hiidensaari that are easy to follow. The island’s wooden steps will take you to the top of the 60 m high Hiidenvuori, which offers a majestic scenery.

The 12.6 km long PÄIJÄNNE-ILVES route starts at the Padasjoki harbour and goes to the Tarus recreation area, from where you can continue hiking along the Ilvesreitti (“Lynx Route”) in Evo. The fairly demanding, versatile route travels along pedestrian and bicycle routes, gravel roads and forest trails. You will find fields, forests and a lean-to with a campfire site along the route. LEMMENHARJU NATURAL TRAIL in Vierumäki, close to the Sport Institute of Finland, is one of the most attractive destinations in the Salpausselkä Geopark. SAY NO TO FOOD WASTE! Minimising food waste is one of the easiest ways to take care of the planet. In addition to restaurants and home kitchens, food waste occurs in shops. Luckily, there are innovative companies in the Lahti region that can make even waste taste good. The Wasted Potential beer range of MICROBREWERY ANT BREW utilises wild and urban herbs, bread that would otherwise be thrown away, berries and fruit that would otherwise go to waste, as well as goose poo collected from the shores of Lake Vesijärvi. Meanwhile, KAUPPIAAN LÄHIOLUT LOCAL BEER , made from discarded bread, is a tasty joint product of local K grocery stores, bakery Pulla-Pojat and Teerenpeli Brewery.

Enjoy the winter nature and have a memorable experience. It does not cost anything and does not cause any burden on the planet. Try WINTER FISHING, for example. You don’t need a fishing permit to go ice fishing, and there are lakes and ponds everywhere in the Lahti region. Before going onto the ice, make sure that the ice is thick enough. Another great winter experience is SWIMMING IN A HOLE IN THE ICE OF A LAKE. It will increase your stress tolerance, relax your muscles, improve your metabolism, invigorate you and get your body going. There are several places where you can swim in a lake in the wintertime in the Lahti region. www.visitlahti.fi Discover the companies that have embarked on the SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL FINLAND path in our region. In December 2021, companies that had joined STF included, among others, Avano Dreams Oy Ltd, Best Lake Nature Adventures Oy, Elinan Majoitus ja Rakennus (Heinola Travel), GreenStar Hotel Lahti, Iso-Naappilan Loma Ky, KOKO Lahti Oy, Koiskalan kartano, Lehmonkärki, Holiday Rock Ltd, Cooperative for Cultural and Experience Travels in Lahti Region, Painovoima ry, Premium Resorts Oy, Solo Sokos Hotel Lahden Seurahuone, Tervalepikon Torpat, Travellamo, Vierumäki Sports Oy and Yli-Kaitala Ltd. ■ Pulkkilanharju Esker

novice hikers. Along the nature trails, you can stop at a lean-to and build a fire to warm yourself up. The whole family can easily get to the lean-tos in Iitti by foot or by car. Hiidenvuori, a hill that rises over 60 metres above the surface of the Kymijoki river at Hiidensaari in Pyhäjärvi, dominates the landscape. It is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike throughout the year. ■

Padasjoki New nature trails and recreational areas have been built in the municipality of Padasjoki during autumn 2021. In the wintertime, skiing routes of the fields of Saksala are right next to Luukonhaa lean-to, which is located closed to the centre of the municipality, and a nature trail to Luukonhaa

arboretum and Suotarinne forest starts right next to the lean-to. When there is snow and ice, there are excellent places to go skiing or cycling in the islands of lake Päijänne. Kalainsaari cooking hut is located just opposite the harbour, and it is an easy family outing place. ■
