Explore. Dream. Discover...

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover - Mark Twain.

From these few sentences my passion for travel began. This quote gave me courage and helped me to take a risk and make the right decision. The books of Beata Pawlikowska, Jacek Pałkiewicz, Wojciech Cejrowski, Martyna Wojciechowska and Kinga Choszcz gave me equal inspiration and encouragement for my journey ahead. Just arriving in Great Britain was a great challenge – a new culture, language and slightly different landscapes. However, after a few months of being here life started to get more and more regular, and we started to feel more comfortable and safe here. It was at this point that it became hard to break the routine, but I knew it would be worth it. Although you can see so much in books, on television, and from friend’s photos, it is not the same as experiencing it personally. You have to see these things with your own eyes; from smelling tea leaves growing in a field, to walking through the great pyramids, to swimming with squid in a richly-coloured coral reef... The travel is all worth it, but how, where and when should you start?

The aim? Touring architectural monuments, sunbathing on the beach, losing ourselves in the wildlife, exploring big cities, pursuing winter sports, climbing mountains, there’s so much to do! Should we travel the world or just travel around

a country, Scotland for example? The traveller’s ambition is always an individual case. Before we go anywhere we should ask ourselves what we actually expect from the trip. What would we like to experience? The ambition of the traveller has a great forbearing on where, when and with whom we should travel. Where? Some of us already know where we want to go and what we want to see. For those less sure I would recommend visiting the traveller’s website, “Koniec Swiata” (The End of the World) www. koniecswiata.net. Here you can find plenty of practical information about which countries to visit and how expensive it might be. To ensure you have a safe trip visit the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), and follow the link “Travel advice by country”. Here you will find information about all possible threats to your safety and the precautions you should take before travelling to that destination.

When? If the time and place of travel is decided it is worth finding out about the type of weather you might expect to endure at your destination. Peak summertime in Asia means the monsoon season, whereas over in Australia this would be winter. In Egypt the summer temperatures reach over 40⁰ C, so be prepared! If you were not able to choose your period of travel, you can always check the weather and change your destination accordingly. Travelling off peak often means you will not have the best weather at your destination, but this has plenty of advantages; you avoid the crowds, you get a better space and scope for photography, and you’ll have a greater chance of finding a piece of beach for yourself. Also off peak prices are generally lower and rain in the scorching day can be a real blessing, especially when, moments after the rain, the sun shines again! E u r o p e a n

How to get there? To find out about prices and airlines I recommend the Skyscanner website: www.skyscanner.net- though it is often cheaper to buy your tickets direct from your chosen airline. If you decide to purchase a ticket always read the small print carefully. For example, check if you can change the date of travel, this is especially important if you book in advance or you plan to be away for a long time. It is also advisable to spend some time “window shopping” the various travel agencies. There are plenty of travel agencies in Newcastle off Northumberland Street. Talk to the travel agents to get some ideas, this may help you decide on your travel destination and you may even find a bargain deal. Before you book however, do check the company’s own website as you might get additional discount for booking online. For more about tickets, planning, budgeting and packing be sure to read my next article in 2B Magazine. Have a safe journey! Emilia Łapińska
