a Luna decide cuándo se trabaja y cuándo se descansa. En el momento que el astro repliega el mar, la orden está dada. La masa de agua que se ha llevado para sus adentros ha dejado al descubierto a cientos de almejas babosas, almejas finas, almejas japónicas, almejas rubias, berberechos... Las mariscadoras están atentas cada mañana a la marea de día para acudir a la playa a recoger el botín. Tienen que darse prisa. La luna no les dejará mucho más de cuatro horas para que limpien, repueblen y recolecten esos moluscos.

Andaba Pablo Albacete por las Rías Bajas gallegas. El tiempo era templado en la playa de Rons, en O Grove. Quizá esta vez más porque era verano. La luz, como siempre, iba y venía con un sol que tampoco se mueve en extremos. Esa mañana, Albacete se había puesto botas de agua y había cogido su cámara. Empezó a caminar entre las mariscadoras, en aquella bajamar, buscando retratos de ese ejército de mujeres que han ido cuidando de Galicia mientras sus hombres estaban, dentro, en alta mar.

Ellos se lanzaban al Atlántico en busca de pescado. Ellas se quedaban en la orilla esperando a que se fuera el mar para que llegara el marisco. Así lo han hecho durante años. En otras décadas era solo una espera y una recolección. Ahora son ellas también quienes ayudan a poblar las rías para que la cantera de almejas no se agote nunca. Están organizadas por cofradías y han definido las normas básicas de la profesión del marisqueo para evitar intrusismos y el saqueo del mar.

El fotógrafo fue buscando retratos en los que la ropa y el lugar dicen tanto como el propio rostro. “Hay muchas mujeres que vienen a recoger el marisco desde aldeas del interior. Hay muchas señoras de aldea y suelen ir en grupos familiares”, explica. “Se conocen entre ellas y hablan a gritos porque pueden estar bastante lejos unas de otras.

Se divierten mucho, y lo pasaron muy bien cuando estuvimos haciendo las fotos. Estas mujeres sienten una especie de orgullo por lo que hacen”.

La faena acaba cuando la Luna dice que ya está bien. El satélite echa el mar a sus pies y las mariscadoras recogen el campamento hasta nueva orden.

He began to walk around the shellfish pickers in the shallows, taking portraits of that army of women who do the work that needs done in Galicia while the men are away on the high seas.

The men go to the ocean in search of fish; the women remain by the shore, waiting for the sea to leave before they hunt for shellfish. And so they have done for years. In decades past, they just waited and collected. Now they take a hand in repopulating tidal areas so that these waters never run out of clams. They are organised in associations and they have set some basic regulations for pickers, to stop encroachment and over-harvesting.

The photographer was seeking portraits in which clothing and surroundings are as important as the faces themselves. “There are a lot of women who come from inland to pick shellfish. Many of them are village people who work in family groups,” he explains. “They know each other, and communicate by shouting because they are often quite far from one another. They have a good time, though, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves when we took the photos. They take a kind of pride in what they do.”

The work ends when the moon says so. The water starts to lap at their feet once again, and the harvesters break camp until a new order is received.

A trifle…but when multiplied by the thousand and loaded up into an aeroplane weighing ever so many tons… then it started to be a problem.

But let not the reader be alarmed. Since then, the engineers have done their work. If you are ever flying on an A380, you can be sure that nobody will have let a modern Arnau Amalric give advice on the best way to distinguish good cable harnesses from bad ones.

La paleta de Malta se ha configurado con decenas de colores desde que esta isla se habitó. Una gran cantidad de las culturas que han habitado el Mediterráneo –y alguna, como la británica, de un poco más allá- han pasado por esta gran roca caliza de poco más de 300 kilómetros cuadrados creando un conglomerado humano incatalogable. Malta nota el efecto de estar a medio camino entre la Europa continental y el norte de África, y le sienta realmente bien. El paisanaje que puebla la isla sigue siendo, a día de hoy, un reflejo de su carácter abierto al mar, al sol, al turismo y, en realidad, a cualquier cosa que aporte un matiz aprovechable a esta coctelera humana.

Maltese life is a many-coloured mosaic, one that has been in the making since the island was first inhabited. Any number of Mediterranean cultures, and some, like the British, from even further afield, have left their mark. The result, for the culture of this 300-square kilometre limestone rock, is an anthropological kaleidoscope. Malta is halfway between continental Europe and North Africa, and this seems to suit it just fine. The islanders’ character has elements that reflect the sea, the sun, tourism and just about everything else that could possibly have added a new flavour to this human cocktail.

Un brewrestaurant en Menorca En países de larga tradición cervecera es frecuente encontrarse con microcervecerías o microbrewery, “cervecerías artesanales que producen una cantidad limitada de cerveza”, como las define Iñaki Cucarella, de Cerveseria Es Molí de Foc. Una versión algo más completa de aquéllas son los brewpubs, microcervecerías que incorporan un pub donde la gente puede acompañar sus pintas con algo ‘sólido’. Aún más avanzada que esta ultima opción es la que propone, precisamente, Es Molí de Foc y que podría definirse como brewrestau-

rant, “un lugar donde poder disfrutar de la mejor cocina mediterránea acompañada de cerveza elaborada en el mismo restaurante”, añade Cucarella.

Para ello, Vicent Vila Plá, propietario del establecimiento situado en la localidad menorquina de Sant Climent, decidió hacer en su día una importante inversión para adquirir la maquinaria de producción de cerveza más avanzada del momento. Desde que Cervantes exhalase su primer llanto, Alcalá de Henares forma parte necesaria de la identidad de la lengua española. Casi cinco siglos después, Alcalá se sitúa como centro generador de actividad económica en torno a la lengua española gracias a un proyecto que reúne a administraciones públicas, universidades y empresas.

L

a generación espontánea no existe. La nada genera nada y cualquier esbozo de vida o actividad requiere de unas condiciones adecuadas para su desarrollo. Ese es el motivo por el que Madrid Network, la Red público-privada formada por empresas, centros de investigación, universidades y centros tecnológicos con sede en la Comunidad de Madrid, trabaja en crear los clusters, ecosistemas adecuados para el desarrollo tecnológico de la comunidad.

Los clusters son nodos de concentración de conocimientos acerca de un área específica. El talento atrae al talento y, a su vez, genera más talento. Por eso es conveniente alimentar la chispa que genera las ideas. El ejemplo que siempre está en mente de todos es Silicon Valley. Son científicos como Daphne Oram, que en los años 60 ayudaron a democratizar los sintetizadores con la creación de Oramics Machine.

El museo de la ciencia en Londres le dedica una pequeña exposición a la que se irán añadiendo propuestas colaborativas para analizar la evolución de este género. La necesidad de reducir el impacto energético y de ahorrar costes ha llevado al Ayuntamiento de Valencia a impulsar un plan en el que tanto el alumbrado público como los edificios municipales verán mermadas las horas de consumo de luz. El apagado selectivo de farolas se ha iniciado ya en horario de madrugada. Será durante este mes de septiembre cuando las instalaciones municipales implanten un plan de ahorro en la medida en que sea posible para no entorpecer el normal funcionamiento de las instituciones. El plan incluye también la sustitución de las bombillas de los edificios dependientes del Ayuntamiento por otras de bajo consumo.

comienzos de 2011 la región italiana de Liguria, cuya capital es Génova, dio un paso adelante y solicitó a la Unión Europea la denominación de origen para su salsa más famosa: il pesto genovese.

La iniciativa era solo una más de las adoptadas por los ligures en defensa de una salsa que consideran uno de los pilares de su cultura culinaria. Antes habían sido su albahaca y su aceite de oliva -ingredientes básicos de la recetalos que habían recibido la denominación protectora, y ello gracias a la labor persistente desde 2003 del Consorzio del Pesto Genovese y de organizaciones particulares, como Palatifini (Paladar fino), entre cuyos objetivos se encuentra la organización –ni más, ni menos- del Campeonato del mundo de la elaboración de pesto a la genovesa con mortero.

Y el caso es que la originalidad es solo relativa. Aunque no está lo que se dice cerca de Dubrovnik, teníamos muy claro que durante nuestra visita a la Perla del Adriático teníamos que buscar un hueco y hacer una escapadita a Zadar. Y así lo hicimos. Lo primero que hicimos al llegar fue ir a conocer al motivo que nos había llevado hasta allí: el órgano marino de Zadar. Una vez allí no salíamos de nuestro asombro ¿Cómo era posible que una escalinata de piedra en la orilla del mar ofreciera tal recital? Pronto descubrimos que ‘el truco’ estaba en las válvulas perforadas en la piedra por las que entran y salen las olas y en los 35 tubos desplegados por la playa.

Quizá por estar un poco a desmano (hay que salir hasta la zona 3 de transporte para poder acceder a él), Wood Green no es tan conocido como otros parques de la ciudad. Sin embargo, sus vistas son para mí las más espectaculares de Londres. El parque de Wood Green es una gran extensión de hierba y árboles, con lago y mini-campo de golf que se encuentra al norte de la ciudad. Está coronado por el palacio Alexandra, una construcción del siglo XVIII que ahora se utiliza para diversos eventos.

Though it’s not exactly close to Dubrovnik, we were determined to find time to visit Zadar. And so we did. On our arrival there, we went straight to see the very thing that had taken us there in the first place: the Zadar sea organ.

Once there, we couldn’t get over our surprise. How could a stone stairway on the seafront offer such a sight? We soon discovered that the ‘trick’ lies in the vents carved in the stone, which allow the waves to move in and out of the organ, and in the 35 tubes along the shore.

Perhaps because it’s a bit out of the way (you have to venture to transport zone 3 to get there), Wood Green isn’t as well known as the other parks in this city.

However, the views here are, for me, the most spectacular in London. Wood Green Park is a huge extension of grass and trees, with a lake and golf course, located in the north of the city. It is crowned by Alexandra Palace, an 18th century building now used for a range of events.

El Museo del Comunismo de Praga se encuentra, paradójicamente, sobre un McDonald’s, junto al metro de Mustek, en pleno corazón de la ciudad de Chequia. Está contenido en un viejo piso con un aire bastante decadente y muestra dos decenas de paneles ilustrativos del periodo comunista en el país, varias estatuas y bustos de líderes del movimiento, uniformes y alguna recreación de aulas o tiendas de la época. Lo mejor, sin duda, el cartel anunciador del museo, con el osito Mischa armado con un Kalashnikov.

Me sigue pareciendo raro que Madrid tenga un río pero, desde hace poco, lo tiene. Dicen que también habrá una playa. El caso es que, sea lo que sea, los niños han instalado en ese lugar de Madrid Río su zona de baño.

No se meten en el Manzanares, pero han invadido las fuentes públicas de chorros hacia el cielo. Es su nueva piscina urbana. Descalzos, vestidos, riendo, gritando, corriendo... Es todo un espectáculo que me recuerda a escenas de Nueva York. Imágenes inéditas en Madrid. Me gustó.

Es lo más parecido al fin del mundo.

Así me lo habían recomendado a mí y así seguiré haciéndolo yo. Hablo del faro del Cabo de Barbaria, que junto al de La Mola, son dos de los lugares que no hay que perderse en Formentera. Allí, en los alrededores del blanco cilindro de 80 metros de altura, el viento que nunca cesa ha creado un lugar inhóspito pero al mismo tiempo inspirador, especialmente si llegas a última hora de la tarde, te sientas en una roca y, sin ninguna prisa, te dedicas a mirar el intenso mar.

Prague Museum of Communism is, paradoxically, located above a McDonald’s, next to Mustek metro station, in the heart of the Czech capital. It is housed in an old apartment with a distinctly decadent feel, and contains dozens of displays on the country’s communist era, various statues and busts of the movement’s leaders and reproductions of schools or shops from the period. The best thing, without a doubt, is the poster advertising the museum, which shows Misha the bear holding a Kalashnikov.

It still strikes me as strange that Madrid finally has a river where you can go for walks but just recently this became a reality. Apparently there’s going to be a beach too. The point is that children have taken the Madrid Río area, whatever it is, as their spot for a splash. They don’t get right into the Manzanares River, but they have invaded the public fountains, made of jet sprays reaching up into the sky. It’s their new urban swimming pool. In bare feet, fully clothed, laughing, shouting, running…

It’s a spectacle that reminds me of scenes from New York. Images never seen before in Madrid. Enjoyed.

It’s the closest thing there is to the end of the earth. That’s how people had recommended the place to me, and I’ll carry on doing the same. I’m talking about the lighthouse at Cabo de Barbaria which, together with the lighthouse at La Mola, are the two places you can’t miss in Formentera.

There, around the white tower, 80m tall, the ceaseless wind has created a space that’s inhospitable yet at the same time inspiring. That’s especially true if you arrive last thing in the afternoon, sit on a rock and gaze into the intense sea.

Hay veces que quieres estar en un sitio y hay veces que quieres desaparecer del planeta Tierra. En la Casa el Morro desapareces. Te evades del mundo y de cualquier cosa que no sea estar en medio de tus pensamientos, entre un parque nacional (Timanfaya), un área vinícola, una playa (Playa Quemada y Playa del Papagayo) y unas salinas (Salinas de Janubio). La Casa el Morro es, en realidad, una colección de pequeñas casas. Pero puedes estar en la tuya como si no existiera ninguna más y, de vez en cuando, pasarte por el agua de la piscina o aprender a hacer yoga en su sala oriental.

Neve Tzedek es el barrio obligado si visitas Tel Aviv. Te dirán que fue el primero, el más antiguo de la ciudad... y es así, pero lo más atrayente es el tinte bohemio que han dejado los artistas e intelectuales que se han reunido en esa zona durante décadas.

Los edificios son bajos, las calles están llenas de detalles, los paseos son agradables... Hay tiendas de diseño, cafés, galerías de arte... Y su nombre, traducido al español, significa: Oasis de Justicia. Nada más y nada menos.

Me habían hablado de puentes similares como el de las Artes de Paris o el de Milvio en Roma pero desconocía la existencia de un ‘puente del amor’ también en Moscú. En el caso de la ciudad rusa es el Puente Luzhkov. Allí las parejas de enamorados se juran amor eterno colgando unos candados con los nombres de ambos en una especie de estructuras metálicas en forma de árbol. Sin duda fue una de las cosas que más me sorprendió de mi viaje a Moscú. Y como me considero un romántico no pude resistir convencer a mi chica para buscar una ferretería…

There are times when you want to be in a place, and times when you want to disappear from planet Earth. At La Casa el Morro, you disappear. You can escape from the world and from anything that’s not being with your own thoughts, tucked between a national park (Timanfaya), a winemaking area, a beach (Playa Quemada and Playa del Papagayo) and salt flats (Salinas de Janubio). La Casa el Morro is, in reality, a collection of small houses. But you can be inside your own as if the others didn’t exist and, from time to time, take a dip in the pool or learn yoga in the orientalstyle hall.

Neve Tzedek is the must-see neighbourhood if you visit Tel Aviv. People will tell you that it was the first, the oldest in the city…and it’s true, but the most attractive thing about it is the bohemian feel left by the artists and intellectuals who, over decades, have come together in this neighbourhood. The buildings are lowrise, the streets are full of little details, you can take a pleasant stroll… There are design stores, cafes, art galleries… And in English its name means: Oasis of Justice.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I’d been told about similar bridges, such as the Pont des Artes in Paris or the Milvio in Rome, but I wasn’t aware that there was a ‘bridge of love’ in Moscow too. In this case, it’s the Luzhov Bridge.

There, couples swear eternal love by hanging padlocks inscribed with their names to a kind of tree-shaped metal structure. Without a doubt, it was one of the things that surprised me the most about my trip to Moscow. And, as I consider myself a romantic, I couldn’t resist convincing my girlfriend to go out and search for a hardware store.
