ada día, en las grandes ciudades, se libra una batalla entre lo útil y lo bello. En muchas ocasiones, el primero se erige vencedor (y en otras, la contienda queda en tablas, lo que significa el triunfo de lo feo pero además inútil…). Lograr un espacio eficiente, pero a la vez agradable, es aún un reto para las grandes urbes. Aunque hay alguna que cuenta con ayuda extra. Es el caso de París, la ciudad de la luz, pero también del cuidado de los detalles. Allí vive Paule Kingleur, “un artista visual, divertido y eco-espontáneo”, como le gusta autodefinirse, y al que no le gustaban nada los bolardos antiaparcamiento instalados en las aceras parisinas. “En la ciudad hay más de 35.000 de estas horribles bolas de color marrón que parecen signos de puntuación sobre el pavimento”. En los días grises, la población se dispersa y el paseo muestra su aspecto más íntimo.

Is it the sea that looks at the city, or the city that contemplates the sea? In Gijón there’s a beach shaped like a bite out of a biscuit; a beach that makes the city more beautiful, come what may. When it’s sunny, the walkway that serves as a frontier between the buildings and the beach is filled with the comings and goings of hundreds of people, all aiming to take their stroll in the company of a sea breeze. On grey days, the crowds clear and the seafront shows its more intimate side.

She goes for a walk each day and sees it - as she says – calm, wild and changing from one state to the other. “We come for a walk along here throughout the year”, she explains. “The temperature’s good. In winter it’s chilly, but the cold isn’t really intense. Some people even continue to take a dip all year round. Most are women and they go for a swim in the mornings, which is the coldest part of the day.”

Han pasado 50 años desde que un joven astrofísico toledano aterrizó en las islas Canarias en busca de un tesoro. No perseguía un nuevo yacimiento de petróleo, ni tampoco una mina cargada de oro. El botín estaba en el cielo, en las estrellas que se divisan desde la cima del Teide. En la limpieza del aire que permitía observar el universo con una nitidez imposible de alcanzar en el resto de Europa.

as mismas islas que vivían ajenas a este recurso tan valioso albergan actualmente uno de los centros más importantes del mundo para el estudio de la astrofísica. Ya nadie pone en duda lo que supone el cielo para las islas. Pero hay algo que no ha cambiado desde entonces y que se sitúa en el centro de la misión de la astronomía: “El humano sigue queriendo saber dónde estamos, quiénes somos y hacia dónde vamos”, dice Francisco Sánchez desde su despacho en el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, en La Laguna (Tenerife). El que fuera ese joven soñador es hoy el fundador y director de esta institución que integra a centenares de investigadores que trabajan para avanzar en el conocimiento sobre nuestro lugar en el universo. En una época en la que los expertos dicen que España necesita reinventarse hacia un modelo basado en la investigación y el desarrollo, el IAC se alza como una de las joyas de la corona. Pero ¿cómo se pone en valor su trabajo cuando la escasez de dinero hace que todo se cuestione? Sánchez empieza por relativizar el presupuesto de 40 millones de euros que cada año gestiona el centro en relación al rédito que aporta. “20 millones vienen del estado y la autonomía, y otros 20 provienen de distintos acuerdos con otros organismos y de fuentes privadas”, explica. “Hay aviones militares que cuestan más que eso”. But when the bottom line is economic, the centre’s relevance can still come into question. In its defence, Sanchez begins by bringing the budget, 40 million Euros a year, down to size. “20 million of that comes from the state and the region, and another 20 from different agreements and private sources,” he explains. “There are fighter planes that cost more than that.” The astrophysicist also stresses the economic benefits offered. “The island’s inhabitants can come and participate in a project that is at the forefront of science. We also help to position Spanish construction and technology companies when it comes to projects in other countries. You have to remember that glass ceramics and SSD cards exist thanks to astrophysics.” The IAC director points out that astronomy’s contribution to the island cannot simply be reduced to an economic one. “We help protect the environment thanks to the sky law

The gateway into the sky is in the Atlantic If the decisions are made in La Laguna, where most of the centre’s researchers are based, its eyes are the observatory on the nearby island of La Palma. This is an astronomer’s paradise; situated above 2,300 metres, it is considered one of the world’s best spots for observing the stars. The dozen telescopes installed here, owned by 19 different countries, are proof of this. The location, at the summit of the Atlantic island, protects it from atmospheric and light pollution from urban centres. The island’s climate also contributes to the creation of an almost constant layer of cloud between 1000 and 2000 metres, which helps to screen the observatory from light coming from coastal towns. To get here, the hour-long journey is a string of tight curves that begins on the coast and ends at the island’s highest point. “There are more than 500 bends, I’ve counted them,” says an astronomer who makes the trip every day. When the exhibition has finished its run at the museum, it will travel to other villages and cities in the area to promote this way of life.

Now the complaints are coming in from the opposite direction: some pedestrians feel that it is dangerous to walk along the street without hearing sound to warn you that a tram is coming.

Estoy seguro de que, como mínimo, eres capaz de decir dos, que pueden ser perfectamente Ferrán Adriá (este fijo) y otro, como José Andrés, Arzak, Berasategui o Gordon Ramsey, de los cada vez más populares genios de los fogones. Está bien, a todos nos gusta comer y, estemos o no de acuerdo con sus excentricidades, nos parece fantástico que la alta cocina cada vez sea más accesible y popular. Bien, ahora otra pregunta relacionada: ¿Cuántos panaderos famosos conoces? Vamos, piensa... ¿Nada? No; ni Bimbo, ni Panrico son apellidos... No; la panadería de tu barrio no cuenta... ¿No? ¿Ni uno? Vaya, qué raro... Si es un oficio similar al de cocinero y en nuestra cocina puede faltar, por ejemplo, tempura de salicomia al azafrán con emulsión de ostra, nudos esferificados de yogur con ficoide glaciale o, incluso, si nos ponemos radicales, caramelo de aceite de calabaza, pero nunca un poco de pan... De hecho, nos solemos referir a la comida, genéricamente, como ‘pan’: el pan nuestro de cada día, pan para el pueblo, pan para hoy y hambre para mañana, etc., etc. ¿No se te ocurre ni uno? Pasear por la Plaza Roja de Moscú siempre es impresionante. Pero este mismo paseo en mi último viaje fue espectacular. Eran las 20:00 horas de la tarde y comenzaba a nevar fuerte. El Kremlin, San Basilio, el mausoleo de Lenin, el centro comercial... ¡¡Todo con nieve!! Hasta la gente salía de los bares para hacerse fotos.
Después de ver ganar a España en la Eurocopa pensábamos que no era posible pasárnoslo mejor en Viena. Pero sí lo era. En Prater, el parque más famoso de la ciudad y en el que se encuentra el estadio Ernst Happel donde ‘la Roja’ ganó la final, nos esperaba mucha más diversión: el parque de atracciones, discotecas, el Museo de Cera, su famosa noria…
Walking around Moscow’s Red Square is always a treat, but the same stroll on my last trip was spectacular. It was 8 in the evening and it began to snow heavily. The Kremlin, St Basil’s, Lenin’s mausoleum, the shopping centre… all under snow!! People were even coming out of the bars to take photos.
After seeing Spain win the European Cup, we thought it wasn’t possible to have a better time in Vienna, but it was. The Ernst Happel stadium, where La Roja won the final, is in Prater, the city’s most famous park. There is a lot more to see there: the amusement park, nightclubs, the Wax Museum, the famous Ferris wheel…

Odio la cocina... y sin embargo adoro visitar los mercados de las localidades a las que viajo. Creo que es otra forma de conocer la ciudad y sus habitantes. Hace poco estuve en A Coruña. No os podéis perder el mercado de la Plaza de Lugo. Todo está limpio y ordenado en esta plaza. Nécoras, centollas, cigalas, percebes... y todo tipo de pescado en una sola planta, la baja. En la primera, una variedad inimaginable de carnes y en la superior, frutas y verduras, pan y una floristería.
Unos lo hacen para ver museos y catedrales. Otros para degustar la gastronomía. Yo he empezado a viajar con la excusa de visitar los grandes templos del fútbol, los míticos estadios en los que se han vivido algunos partidos memorables. Mi primer destino, San Siro, el estadio donde juegan tanto el Inter de Milán como el Milan. Un lugar cuya grandeza te hace sentir insignificante.
Hacía tiempo que no entraba a un lugar tan acogedor. Pasé por la calle Lope de Vega y vi una pizarra que decía, en una caligrafía preciosa: ‘El brunch ya no se lleva... Ahora se llevan los desayunos tardíos’ (Domingos de 11.00 a 17.00 horas). Me convencieron. Desayunar a las 4 un domingo es homenaje para el cuerpo. Todo, absolutamente todo, está hecho en su cocina. Incluido un pan delicioso y unos bizcochos imprescindibles. Todo es artesanal y a menudo suena swing. Vuelvo seguro.

I started to travel so that I could visit the great football temples, those legendary stadiums that have hosted truly memorable matches. My first destination, the San Siro, the ground where both AC and Inter Milan play. It’s a place whose greatness makes you feel insignificant.

I hadn’t been to such a great place for a long time. I was walking along Calle Lope de Vega and I saw a blackboard with this beautiful handwriting on it: ‘Brunch is passé… now late breakfasts are in’ (Sundays from 11am to 5pm). It convinced me. Having breakfast at 4 in the afternoon on a Sunday is a real treat. They cook everything, absolutely everything, in their own kitchen, including delicious bread and great cakes. Everything is freshly made and they often play swing. I’ll definitely be going back.

Desde que lo vi en la carátula de un disco (de vinilo, claro) de Mike Oldfield me pareció un sitio mágico. Una visita al islote de Es Vedrá está siempre en mis planes cada vez que voy a Ibiza. En mi último viaje a la isla pitiusa me acerqué un poco más. ¿Cómo? En barco. Justo desde debajo, la visión de este peñón, que sobresale 380 metros sobre el mar, es mucho más impresionante.
En su punto perfecto. Ni aceitosas, ni amargas. Pillar el punto a una berenjena no es fácil. Ni tampoco el de la fritura. Pero en Casa Julio le tienen el punto a los dos. El lugar (pequeñito, pequeñito, y por la zona de la calle Elvira) está especializado en frituras. Todas están buenas pero yo me quedo con las berenjenas. Luego, como hacen en esa ciudad, un buen chorreón de miel y ¡adentro! Ve preparado para luchar por tu espacio porque suele estar concurrido pero, cuando lo encuentres, raciones y vino.
Im-pre-sio-nan-te. Es lo único que pude decir cuando me asomé al Tajo de Ronda desde el Puente Nuevo. Me gusta la escalada y no tengo miedo a las alturas pero contemplar desde allí arriba la garganta escavada sobre el río Guadalevin es un espectáculo digno de ver. Aunque no es lo único que merece la pena visitar en Ronda, en mi opinión, uno de los rincones con más encanto de todo el sur de España.

Done perfectly, they are neither oily nor bitter. Getting aubergines just right isn’t easy, and neither is a good batter. But at Casa Julio they do both. The place (a tiny little restaurant near Calle Elvira) specialises in fried food. They are all good, but I’ll take the aubergines. Then, as they like to do here, a dash of honey and down they go! Come ready to fight for a space, because it’s usually packed, but it’s worth it for their dishes, accompanied by a glass of wine.

Unreal. That’s the only word I could say when I looked down at the Tajo de Ronda from the Puente Nuevo. I like climbing and I’m not afraid of heights, but looking down on the gorge of the River Guadalevin was something special. Of course there is a lot more to see in Ronda, but in my opinion it’s one of the best views in the south of Spain.

Por eso las conoce tan bien: “Existen cuatro tipo de turbulencias: las mecánicas, que se producen por el contacto del aire con la superficie terrestre, de ahí que suelan aparecer durante la fase de aproximación. Las turbulencias orográficas se producen al sobrevolar una zona montañosa y vienen motivadas por algún componente de viento en altura que hace que, al chocar el aire en la montaña, se generen pequeños torbellinos que afectan al avión.
