Estela has come back to Almeria after time away. She spent many years working hard, non-stop, in film and television production. There came a time when she decided to take a rest to recover her strength, be near her family and rediscover her native land. So Almeria has become her centre of operations. Now she brings her experience in production to projects that come her way, whether they are based in Almeria or anywhere else. Her suitcase is always at hand, ready for a trip, but always one with a return ticket.

Desde aquella ciudad que era “como un pueblo”, aislada y lejana, hasta la actual, con mejores comunicaciones e infraestructuras. Pero siempre ha encontrado motivos para disfrutar de ella. “De Almería me gusta... pues... ¡Todo!”, afirma, sin ganas de concretar. Le encanta inventar ocasiones para reunir a toda la familia con cualquier excusa, y adora estar con sus hijas y contar a sus nietos lo que el tiempo ha cambiado y lo que no debería cambiar.

Ahora se ha convertido en un peculiar laboratorio de la construcción pues en el recinto se ha instalado un equipo de investigadores del Green Cross Lab que busca materiales y forma de edificar que integren de manera eficaz la vegetación con el cemento. Un ejemplo de lo que están haciendo los investigadores de la Universidad de Oviedo en el Botánico es la creación de un sistema de sensores exteriores e interiores que dan datos de consumo eléctrico y temperaturas que permiten observar las propiedades aislantes de las plantas.

Hay muchas maneras de pasear por Bilbao. Para mí la más original es... por el agua, con una tabla y un remo, sin esfuerzo, deslizándote por una lámina de agua en la ría del Nervión, arteria principal de esta villa. Lo organiza Bwaters y se parte del muelle Ramón de la Sota, junto al Museo Marítimo de Bilbao. Mientras remas tranquilamente, pasarás por delante del Guggenheim y podrás llegar hasta el Mercado de la Ribera, en pleno Casco Viejo. Una perspectiva diferente de la ciudad.

Si vas a París no puedes perderte la exposición de Salvador Dalí en el Centro Pompidou. Permanece abierta hasta finales de marzo y es una buena ocasión de conocer la obra anónima del artista surrealista. Mi recomendación es ir en horario nocturno.

El centro abre los jueves y viernes hasta las 23 horas y es la mejor manera de no pasar otras tres haciendo cola. Y luego puedes irte de cena a uno de los muchos restaurantes encantadores de París.

There are lots of ways to see Bilbao. For me, the most original is along the river: on a paddle board with an oar. It is an effort-free trip, sliding along the River Nervion, Bilbao’s main waterway. It is organised by Bwaters and starts from the Ramón de la Sota quay, next to the Maritime Museum. Your gentle paddle will take you past the Guggenheim Museum as far as the Ribera Market in the old town. It’s a different way to enjoy the city.

If you go to Paris, don’t miss the Salvador Dali exhibition at the Pompidou Centre. It is on until the end of March and is a good chance to see some unknown works by the Surrealist artist. My recommendation is to go during the evening opening hours. The gallery is open until 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays and it is the best way to avoid a 3-hour queue. Later you can go out for dinner in one of Paris’s many wonderful restaurants.

Los alrededores de la calle Arco son una zona muy agradable para pasear. Si lo haces, no dejes de pasar por Discovery Music, en el número 1 de esa calle. Es una pequeña tienda de discos especializada en rarezas y descatalogados, aunque tiene un poco de todo. Su dueño, Mariano, vende vinilos imposibles de encontrar en ninguna otra parte. Cada vez que entro me prepara una selección de discos y los oímos. Después, salgo con la cartera vacía. Si vas, compra aquello que te recomiende. Solo por pasar un rato allí merece la pena.

Las guías de viaje están bien. Pero mucho mejor está descubrir lugares que no están en ellas. Sitios a los que solo van los que viven en la ciudad. Sin que se corra mucho la voz, no se vaya a llenar de turistas, quería compartir un secreto: uno de mis restaurantes preferidos de Vigo.

Se llama El Puerto y está en la calle do Areal, muy cerca del Paseo de la Alameda. Comida casera en una humilde casa de pescadores. Un planazo, especialmente por la cantidad y calidad de sus platos.

A mi novia le encantan las miniaturas, las casas de muñecas y demás. Yo soy un cinéfilo empedernido. Y a los dos nos entusiasmó el Museo de las Miniaturas y Decorados de Cine de Lyon. Aunque estoy seguro de que ni una ni otra cosa son imprescindibles para disfrutar de la visita de este museo. Sobre todo, si se va con niños. Si dispones de tiempo suficiente, mi consejo es que te pases por el aula pedagógica en la que se desvelan algunos de los secretos mejor guardados de la historia del séptimo arte.

The area around Calle Arco is a great place for a walk. If you are there, drop in on Discovery Music, at no.1, Calle Arco.

This little shop specialises in rare and discontinued albums, although it has a bit of everything. Its owner, Mariano, sells vinyl that you can’t get your hands on anywhere else. Every time I go he gets a few things together and we listen to them, and then I leave with my wallet empty. If you go, buy anything he recommends, but it is worth a look even if you aren’t buying.

Travel guides are all well and good, but it is better to go and discover things for yourself. If you can, it’s best to go to places only frequented by those who live in the city. Here’s one of my secrets -although you should keep it to yourself, it would be a shame if it filled up with tourists-, one of my favourite restaurants in Vigo: it is called El Puerto and it is on Calle do Areal, near the Paseo de la Alameda. It serves traditional food in a former fisherman’s house. With good food and big servings, it is an excellent plan.

My girlfriend loves miniatures, doll’s houses and things like that, and I am a film buff; so the two of us had a great time at Lyons’ Museum of Miniatures and Film Sets. However, I’m sure you don’t need a special interest to enjoy this museum, especially if you go with children.

If you have enough time, my advice is to visit the didactic room, where they reveal some of the best-kept secrets in film.

Las ventajas de tener amigos en las ciudades que visitas es que suelen darte unas recomendaciones estupendas. Sushi Tetsu es una de esas experiencias culinarias que suceden muy de vez en cuando. Es un pequeño restaurante en el barrio de Clerkenwell. Solo caben 7 personas sentadas en la barra que aguardan pacientemente los movimientos del maestro Tetsu, que prepara el sushi con la ayuda de su mujer. El lugar es una oda a la vida slow. En nuestro caso la comida duró casi dos horas y estaba exquisita. La pareja que lo regenta es encantadora y me enteré que Tetsu estuvo un tiempo trabajando en el conocidísimo restaurante Nobu antes de abrir su propio local.

Es muy probable que en un certamen de belleza Ámsterdam saldría ganando frente a Rotterdam, su eterna rival. Pero si estás de viaje por Holanda y cuentas con un poco de tiempo adicional, merece la pena acercarse durante al menos un día a la ciudad más moderna del país, con sus rascacielos imponentes y edificios futuristas. La urbe se ha convertido en un laboratorio de arquitectura moderna y cualquiera que se acerca con una cámara de fotos no podrá cesar de disparar. Lo dicho, puede que sea el patito feo de las dos, pero merece la pena conocerlo.

The advantage of having friends in the cities you visit is that they can give you some great recommendations. Sushi Tetsu is one of those culinary experiences that happens every so often. It is a small restaurant in the Clerkenwell area of the city.

There is only enough seating for 7 people sitting at the bar, where diners can watch the maestro Tetsu preparing sushi with his wife’s help. The place is a song of praise to the slow life. In our case, the meal lasted almost two hours and was exquisite.

The couple who run the place are really friendly and I found out that Tetsu worked for a while at the famous Nobu before he opened his own restaurant.

María Sanchís Bilbao-Londres. Seat 19E

It is quite likely that in a beauty contest, Amsterdam would beat Rotterdam, its eternal rival, easily. However, if you are in the Netherlands for a few days and you have some extra time, it is worth visiting the country’s most modern city, with its impressive skyscrapers and futurist buildings. Rotterdam has become a laboratory of modern architecture and anyone visiting with a camera will no doubt succumb to the temptation of taking endless photos. It might be a bit of an ugly duckling, but I definetely recommend it.

Siempre me gusta intentar unir los lugares más concurridos con otros más desconocidos cuando visito una ciudad.

En Roma me propuse hacer lo mismo.

Tras un poco de investigación descubrí el barrio de Coppedè, un lugar supercurioso que fue construido por el arquitecto Gino Coppedè y que completó en los años 20.

Se nota que le dieron muchísima libertad, y los edificios tienen mucha coherencia entre sí. No encontrarás la Roma de las guías aquí pero sí un lugar muy inspirador lleno de detalles estimulantes.

When I visit a city, I like to see the popular places but also visit some other, unknown spots. So that’s what I set out to do in Rome. After a little research I found out about the Coppedè area, which is a really interesting little part of the city, designed by the architect Gino Coppedè and built in the 1920s. Obviously the architect was given plenty of freedom, and the buildings work very well together. It’s not the most popular place with tourists, but I found it inspiring, with lots of fascinating details.
