This is Malaga, a city that still breathes the air of southern Spain, but with a new dimension provided by the foreigners living here. Y como una gran parte de los malagueños, practica la buena costumbre de terminar la jornada laboral tomando unas cañas...”porque, haga frío o calor, aquí siempre hay gente en la calle”.
After a year studying abroad in Naples, Marga realised how much life her native city has. “Here you don’t need to telephone your friends to meet up. You just go out and you see them.” She is working as a legal apprentice at a law firm and, like many in Malaga, often ends her working day with a couple of drinks, “because, whether it is hot or cold, there are always people in the streets.”

Born in Cadiz, she grew up in Madrid and has been living in Malaga for 25 years. Testigo del desarrollo urbanístico que ha ido cambiando la ciudad, dice sentirse orgulloso de cómo ha evolucionado Málaga. Habla de calles peatonales, rehabilitación de edificios y, sobre todo, del muelle, “que después de permanecer desaprovechado durante muchos años, se ha abierto a la ciudad para el disfrute de sus gentes”.
His favourite image of Malaga is the waterfront seen from Pedregalejo, an old fishing neighbourhood. There, Andrés has his restaurant, the Maricuchi. He has seen how the city has changed and grown, and feels proud of it. He talks about the pedestrianised streets, the refurbished buildings and especially the harbour area, “which was underused for years, but has been opened up now so that everyone can enjoy it.”

Las etiquetas turísticas que se aplican a las ciudades eran en el pasado ensoñaciones de los escritores y, en el presente, maquinaciones de los publicitarios…, y no siempre se justifican. Durante algunas décadas hizo fortuna la expresión ‘El París del Este’ para referirse a Bucarest. Se trataba de señalar con ella un cierto aire cosmopolita que impregnaba la vida de la ciudad y, sobre todo, la arquitectura de la capital de Rumanía, donde convivía el neoclásico decimonónico con edificios que seguían las corrientes del Art Nouveau y de la Bauhaus. Sin embargo, cuando se revisan los recetarios de la cocina rumana, se aprecia que la occidentalización no le afectó sustancialmente; la gastronomía de Rumanía permaneció fiel a sus raíces otomana y balcánica. De hecho, mediado el siglo XVIII, uno de los

However, from a gastronomic point of view, on examination it can be seen that Romanian cuisine has hardly been westernised; the country’s food culture is loyal to its Ottoman and Balkan roots. Going back to the mid-19th century, one of the two editors of the major early Romanian recipe compilation (200 tried recipes, pastries and other household things), Costache Negruzzi (the other was the statesman M. Kogalniceanu) had the stomach to declare that the Romanian cuisine was a primitive one. A result of the confluence of Ottoman and Balkan currents (specifically the influence of Orthodox Greece) survives in the national dish of sarmale with mamaliga. The accompaniment, the mamaliga, is simply a variety of polenta, a thick porridge of yellow maize flour. Its origins go back to the time of Ottoman rule when the Romani-

En mi última visita a Barcelona se me ocurrió pasarme por el bar de tapas que los hermanos Adrià han abierto en Paral·lel. Llegué con ilusión, sin pensar que había que hacer la reserva con meses de antelación. Pero no todo estaba perdido. A la salida, un camarero me informó amablemente de que uno de los socios del lugar tiene un restaurante, al cruzar la calle, llamado Cañota. Mi decepción pronto se convertiría en ilusión al comprobar que la comida estaba buenísima, una mezcla genial de lo tradicional con lo moderno, y que ofrecían un marisco delicioso. Todo esto a dos pasos de la Fira de Barcelona.
La forma más barata y rápida para moverse por Tel Aviv no es ni en taxi, autobús, a pie o en coche privado. ¡Es en bici! La ciudad tiene un servicio de alquiler de bicis municipal distribuido por todo el centro y, por tan solo 12 euros, puedes usarlas durante una semana. El servicio se paga directamente en las máquinas automáticas que acompañan a cada puesto. Recomiendo especialmente recorrerse toda la zona de la playa, equipada con carriles, o perderse en las calles de estilo Bauhaus colindantes a la avenida Rothschild.
During my last trip to Barcelona it occurred to me to stop by the tapas bar that the Adrià brothers have opened on Paral-lel. I arrived brimming with expectation, unaware that you have to book months ahead. But not all was lost. On the way out, a waiter pleasantly informed me that one of the partners in the business has a restaurant just over the street, called Cañota. My disappointment soon gave way to delight as I discovered that the food was outstanding - an ingenious fusion of traditional and contemporary - and they serve delicious shellfish. And all just a stone’s throw from the Fira de Barcelona.

The cheapest and fastest way to get around Tel Aviv isn’t by taxi, bus, on foot or in a car. It’s by bike! The city council runs a hire service all over the centre and for just 12 euros you can use their cycles for a week. You pay directly at the automatic machines located at each bike park. There are designated lanes along the beachfront and it’s well worth taking a ride there or losing yourself in the Bauhaus-style neighbourhood alongside Rothschild Avenue.

La selva amazónica tiene un hermano pequeño en la isla de la Palma. Además de los sitios más conocidos, como la Ruta de los Volcanes o Roque de los Muchachos, uno de los lugares que más me sorprendieron en mi reciente visita a la isla canaria fueron los Tilos. Un vergel impresionante con árboles de más de 10 metros de altura que te hacen olvidar que estás en medio del Atlántico.
Me dejé llevar por la mitomanía, lo admito. Me gusta mucho la película Antes del atardecer y la librería Shakespeare and Company que aparece al inicio. ¡Además, en Ling hablasteis de ella hace algunos meses! Tenía el lugar idealizado y no me decepcionó a pesar de estar invadido de turistas. Conserva su encanto y, aunque me pareció un poco cara, me resultó un sitio agradable para pasar un rato tras la visita a Notre Dame.
Almería es, a mi juicio, no solo para el verano. De hecho, la prefiero en otro momento. Ahora le he cogido el gusto a echar la bici en el avión e irme para allá en pleno invierno a pedalear totalmente solo. Llueve poco, las temperaturas no suelen bajar de diez grados y el sol brilla muchísimo. Salvo que el viento esté un poco caprichoso, una ruta desde San José a Carboneras, pasando por La Isleta, Las Negras y el resto de pueblos del levante, es una delicia en cualquier época del año.

Ok, I admit it. I let myself be carried away by the myth. I love the film, Before Sunset and the bookshop – Shakespeare and Company – that appears at the start. What’s more, you mentioned it in Ling just a few months ago! I had an idealized view of the place but wasn’t disappointed, despite the flood of tourists. The shop retains its charm and, although I found it a little pricey, it was a pleasant spot to spend some time after visiting Notre Dame.

Almeria, in my view, isn’t just a place to enjoy in summer. In fact, I prefer it at other times of year. I’ve got into the habit of taking the bike along with me by plane and heading off in the middle of winter on long bike rides completely alone. It doesn’t rain much, the temperatures don’t tend to drop below ten degrees and there’s plenty of sunshine. As long as the wind behaves itself, a route from San Jose to Carboneras, passing by La Isleta, Las Negras and the other villages in the east is a joy at any time of year.

El lujo ha muerto. Viva el lujo inteligente. En mi última visita a Viena tuve la suerte de quedarme en el Hotel Daniel, un establecimiento genial a un precio muy razonable (en torno a los cien euros). El edificio tiene un gigantesco barco escultórico anclado en el séptimo piso, una boutique de ropa y complementos chulos en su interior; también, su propia pastelería. Las habitaciones son muy cómodas y se alquilan bicis a cinco euros el día. ¿Qué más se puede pedir? Me quedo con las frases de su fundador que aparece en la web del hotel: “El viajero moderno viaja ligero. Necesita espacio para mantenerse flexible y versátil. El exceso pretencioso estorba”.
Quien dice que el papel ha muerto claramente no ha entrado en Soda. Esta tienda de libros de mesa y revistas es un amplio local repleto de publicaciones nacionales e internacionales en la que uno puede, fácilmente, perder una mañana. Si sales de la tienda con algunas revistas en la mano, el barrio de Involstadt, donde se encuentra, está lleno de cafés agradables para leerlas.
Es quizá una de las rutas de montaña más sencillas que he hecho últimamente. De hecho, y pese al mal tiempo, conté más de una docena de niños que subían con sus padres durante el trayecto. Pero la subida a la Bola del Mundo me deparó una agradable sorpresa: ¡las antenas repetidoras instaladas en su cima eran igualitas al cohete lunar de Tintín, el gran ídolo de mi infancia!

From tabletop editions to magazines, this bookstore is packed with national and international publications and you can easily spend a whole morning there. If you leave the shop with a couple of magazines in your hand, Involstadt, where it’s located, is full of pleasant cafes where you can sit down and read them.
It’s perhaps one of the simplest mountain routes that I’ve taken recently. In fact, despite the bad weather, I counted over a dozen children along the way who were tackling the hike with their parents. But the climb up to the Bola del Mundo held an even greater surprise: the communications towers at the summit were exactly the same as the moon rocket used by Tintin, my childhood idol!

Luxury is dead. Long live smart luxury! On my last trip to Vienna I was lucky enough to stay at Hotel Daniel, a superb place at a very reasonable price (around 100 euros). The building has a huge, sculpture-like ship anchored on the seventh floor, a boutique with clothing and cool accessories inside and even its own confectioners. The rooms are very comfortable and you can hire a bike for five euros a day. What more could you want? I came away completely agreeing with this quote from the founder of the hotel that appears on their website: “The modern traveller likes to travel light.
