i nombramos a Malta, lo primero que se le vendría a la cabeza a cualquier español de más de 30 años es la goleada que le endosó La Roja al combinado de la isla en 1983. La herencia británica legó, hace casi medio siglo, a los protagonistas de una de las experiencias más impactantes del lugar: los autobuses regulares. Los característi-

os verdaderos guerreros aman la paz. Mis últimos viajes me han llevado por las agitadas naciones de Irak y Libia; resultó excitante, pero todo batallador necesita de una tregua para recuperar fuerzas antes de enfrentarse de nuevo al fragor de los baches y al polvo. Es hora, pues, de apaciguar el corazón y dejar que la mirada se pierda en idílicas lejanías sin temor a un control militar o a una tormenta de arena. Mi espíritu tiene hoy hambre de belleza clásica; mi moto, de suaves y gozosas curvas y mi estómago, de refinados alimentos hechos de trigo, vid y olivo. Es hora de regresar a Italia donde el buen gusto es norma, donde se come bien en cualquier figón, donde la Historia se hace piedra y el paisaje es un cuento de castillos, abadías, cipreses y princesas encantadas. Italia, siempre Italia. Pero decir simplemente ‘Italia’ resulta un poco vago porque Italia es un país reciente con diversas almas en su ser. l sonido del mar más bonito del mundo se escuchó durante un atardecer de agosto de 2009 en la playa coruñesa del Orzán. Un grupo de olas lo interpretaron junto a otro de gaviotas y el jurado del concurso ‘El Sonido del Mar’, organizado por la ciudad polaca de Slupsk, lo eligió como el mejor de entre las 621 propuestas presentadas desde distintos rincones del planeta. Desde entonces, la costa coruñesa presume, de forma oficial, de ser el lugar donde mejor entona el océano. Hay quien considera que este recital que el Atlántico dedicó a A Coruña es su muestra de agradecimiento a una ciudad para la que el mar es mucho más que el agua que riega sus costas. Es un elemento integrado e indispensable sin el que no se entendería su idiosincrasia. l Gran Arquitecto del Universo te vigila desde una angosta calle de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. El ojo que todo lo ve se asoma desde un tímpano triangular de fría exuberancia neoclásica que remata una extraña villa vigilada por esfinges egipcias. El templo está abandonado y comparte perspectiva con un moderno edificio de cristal, funcionalista y minimalista, erigido con gran orgullo cosmopolita sobre los restos de una antigua ciudadela (especie de corrala tinerfeña en peligro de extinción). Se trata de un templo masón, el más grande que hubo en España, y no deja de resultar milagroso que haya sobrevivido, con sus símbolos de juego de rol matemático, a
los 40 años de dictadura franquista, un regimen que odió y persiguió la masonería con tenacidad inquisitorial. No solo sobrevivió, sino que en un giro irónico impropio de un gobierno con tan poco sentido del humor, el templo fue utilizado como dependencia del Ministerio de Defensa, exactamente como Farmacia Militar. No hay más que asomarse un poco al borde de la ciudad para sentir la brisa Atlántica, para ver la belleza de unas islas que ocultan el sol del atardecer, para decir hasta luego a los marineros que, rumbo a mar abierto, atraviesan la ría con esperanzas de una buena captura. Vigo es piedra vieja llena de salitre que se renueva con el paso del tiempo realzando el esplendor de un pasado marinero muy arraigado al sentir de esta ciudad. A medio camino entre lo rural y la modernidad de una gran ciudad, Vigo permite la coexistencia de oficios casi perdidos con un ambiente cultural en pleno desarrollo. Corta y afeita con la misma maña que prepara unas lonchas de jamón a la clientela de toda la vida. Así es Pedro. Nació y se crió en el barrio de Berbés, jugando entre soportales, dornas y sardinas frescas pescadas en embarcaciones a remos. Pero el camino de la vida lo llevó a modelar su futuro a base de tijera y navaja. Hoy regenta con mucho orgullo la barbería-peluquería más antigua de Vigo y no pierde la ocasión para recordar a sus clientes que por allí pasaron las personalidades más grandes de España: entrenadores de fútbol, pintores, escritores.... “No sé que pasa pero los que nacemos por aquí, por el Berbés, siempre que cogemos el coche terminamos pasando por el puerto. Es como si el coche viniera solo”.

Vigo llegó después. “Aquí descubrí lo que inconscientemente quería: que mis manos me enseñaran cosas”. Hoy es luthier porque siente mágico el paso de madera a nota musical y porque en esta ciudad se ve capaz de desarrollarse como profesional. “Además, el entorno es tan bonito que resulta imposible no enamorarse de esto. En un cuarto de hora tienes el monte, como si estuvieses en el Amazonas, y en otro tanto estás en una playa en la que no hay nadie”. Vigo es todo menos rutina.

He has lived in Argentina, France, Hong Kong, the United States, Mexico… and visited perhaps 50 more countries. Vigo came later. “Here I discovered what I had unconsciously wanted: for my hands to teach me things.” Today he is a luthier because he loves the magic of extracting a musical note from wood, and because this city allows him to develop professionally. “Also, the surroundings are so beautiful it is impossible not to fall in love with the place. In fifteen minutes you can be out in the wilds, like you are in the Amazon, and in another quarter of an hour you can be walking alone on a beach.” Vigo is anything but monotonous.

La Villa Girasole, situada en las afueras de Verona, fue concebida para rotar y seguir al sol, de la misma manera que un girasol acompaña al astro rey desde que sale hasta que se pone. La villa fue una idea del ingeniero italiano Angelo Invernizzi, que trabajaba para el ferrocarril en Padua. Fue terminada en 1935 después de cuatro años de esfuerzos y las habitaciones se extienden a partir de una columna central que hace de eje, escalera y ascensor, lo que también le asemeja en su silueta a un faro. Cada jugador tenía 7 partidas cada día para localizar las parejas del mismo destino Vueling en el menor tiempo posible. Traen tartas caseras, zumos, termos de café, tortillas de patatas, galletas... y nada se podrá comprar ni vender. Todo se comparte y se intercambia. La cita se produce un sábado al mes desde noviembre de 2008. La convoca un colectivo llamado Desayuno con Viandantes formado por siete arquitectos y artistas que un día, hace tres años, se juntaron a hablar de las intervenciones públicas en espacios urbanos. La idea inspiró al grupo de valencianos pero no la adoptaron al pie de la letra. Sus intereses van más allá de su vertiente artística. Les interesa también el aspecto social y, ante todo, lo asumen como una recuperación del espacio urbano para los ciudadanos. Aquella tarde decidieron que convocarían desayunos públicos. Pensaron que necesitaban una imagen. Empezaron a soltar posibles nom-
bres. Ninguno les convencía. “Pero dijimos que no nos levantábamos hasta que saliera el nombre”, dice David Estal. Y, al final, salió: Desayuno con Viandantes. Ya llevan 26 desayunos en las calles de Valencia. El primero fue en la Plaza Viciana. Después montaron el café y los bollos en la Plaza Comunión de San Esteban, en los pies de las Torres de Quart, en el Parque de Cabecera, en la Huerta de la Ermita de Vera, en Laberinto de los Jardines de Viveros, en Tranvía Pont de Fusta, en la Salida del Corte Inglés del metro Colón... “Identificamos un lugar (una plaza, una parada de metro...) con una oportunidad de uso y lo organizamos ahí. Quieren recuperar el espacio público y que las personas disfruten de las calles, pero no hay vocación de reclamo ni nadie ante quien protestar. Ni la policía ni ningún ciudadano ha dicho nada jamás. “Causa tanta sorpresa que nadie dice nada. Estamos solo desayunando. ¿Qué les puede molestar?”, comenta Estal. “El desayuno es un espacio de encuentro, de convivencia, no causa ningún conflicto. Es totalmente abierto y la gente se lleva siempre una sensación buena”. El fin del desayuno no cae en el vacío. El colectivo hace “un mapa de lo que ha pasado”, explica Michael Filez, otro miembro de Desayuno con Viandantes. “Exploramos qué procesos se han catalizado. A los artistas nos interesa mucho ver las dinámicas que se producen. Se denomina Artivismo y significa activismo con imaginación, cierta provocación y con un trasfondo basado en disfrutar. Es una forma más amplia de compartir. Partimos de una actitud positiva y vemos qué pasa cuando la gente colabora”. El próximo desayuno será en septiembre. Stay tuned.

And we organise the breakfast there. To use something is to construct space,” says Estal. “The idea is to de-contextualise the venues and surprise people. It’s a celebration of public space. Our intention is to recover the streets but without a campaigning feel or placards.” The location is different every time, and the theme varies too. On each occasion, a new poster appears related to a theme spotlighted by the breakfast. Sometimes, the breakfast has been organised together with a neighbourhood association, or it has combined with an artistic activity, or a jazz band plays in the background. Desayuno con Viandantes is organised through email and social networks. No one knows in advance how many people will attend. It doesn’t matter. The number varies between 60 and 120 people. Some of them are first-timers and others are loyal breakfasters. The space is occupied in a spontaneous, natural way. The group never apply for permission in advance, as they would have to do if the event were a demonstration. But it’s not. The aim is to recover public space and encourage people to enjoy the streets, but there’s no campaigning and no one to protest against. Neither the police nor any member of the public has ever complained. “It causes such surprise that no-one says anything. We’re just having breakfast. How could that bother them?” says Estal. “Breakfast is a space for meeting up, coming together, it doesn’t cause any conflict. It’s completely open and people always go away with a great feeling.” The aim of the breakfast does not vanish into thin air. The collective makes “a map of what has happened,” explains Michael Filez, another member of Desayuno con Viandantes. “We explore which processes have caused reactions. As artists, we are really interested in the dynamics that emerge. It’s called ‘Artivism’ and means activism with imagination, with a touch of provocation and against a background that’s based on enjoying oneself. It’s a broader form of sharing. La vivienda podía crecer y adaptarse a las necesidades de sus habitantes y era energéticamente autosuficiente. Por el uso exclusivo de renovables (y por lo de desmontable) se llamó Solar Kit. La habían diseñado, codo con codo, ingenieros y arquitectos de la Universidad de Sevilla, que también tiene su mérito, y se montó en 2010 junto con otras 16 casas solares facturadas por distintas universidades de todo el mundo, junto al río Manzanares, en Madrid. Eran los proyectos participantes en el primer Europe Solar Decathlon, un concurso que llegaba a Europa tras cuatro ediciones celebrándose en Estados Unidos. Ha pasado un año. Ya se está moviendo la maquinaria del segundo Europe Solar Decathlon, que tendrá lugar en 2012, de nuevo en Madrid. Y habrá lectores agoreros, quizás influidos por el uso del pasado en el primer párrafo, que piensen que nuestro prototipo hoy estará criando polvo en algún trastero del campus hispalense. The piece was played in the gardens of the Venetian church of Madonna dell’Orto, and has not been heard since. Soon after the piece’s premiere, the music disappeared, until it was found in the archives of the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense library in Milan. 284 years later, it will be heard once again. The music has been through a thorough restoration process carried out by Czech musician Ondrej Macek. This time, the performance will be in Prague Castle, at a Baroque music festival that runs from July to October.

En esos años le dio tiempo a recorrer el mundo e interpretarlo añadiendo a su mirada única su compromiso humanista, a fundar la agencia Magnum junto a algunos compañeros de profesión, y a convertir en arte el fotoperiodismo aplicando su máxima del ‘instante decisivo’ ante el que “el fotógrafo debe involucrar al ojo, al cerebro y al corazón”. El área de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Verona ha organizado una exposición en el Centro Internacional Scavi Scaligeri con una selección de 133 obras. La exposición está programada desde el 19 de junio hasta el 9 de octubre.

Together with a group of colleagues, he founded the Magnum photo agency and he transformed the art of photojournalism with his theory of the “decisive moment.” According to Cartier-Bresson, a photograph taken in this way will let “the photographer involve the eye, the brain and the heart.” Verona City Council’s Culture Department has organised an exhibition at the Scavi Scaligeri International Centre with a selection of 133 works by the French photographer. The exhibition will run from 19 June to 9 October.

Si visitan la ciudad en Semana Santa, es fácil que le vean dando indicaciones para que la muchedumbre abra paso a las procesiones. Le distinguirán por sus famosos guantes blancos, que emplea cada vez que tiene lugar algún acto multitudinario ‘de categoría’. Posiblemente no cojan ni una de las palabras que dice, porque para eso hay que conocerle muy bien, pero se darán cuenta de que sabe poner orden. “A él siempre le ha tirado la calle. Sabe lo que se mueve en Jerez, se entera de todo, y la gente le entiende muy bien. xiste en San Petersburgo un restaurante —llamado Mechta Molokhovets, es decir, El sueño de Molokhovets— que recrea un recetario clásico de la cocina rusa (titulado Un regalo para la joven ama de casa o cómo reducir los gastos del hogar), escrito por Elena Molokhovets en 1861. El libro, un auténtico best seller de la época, se completó y reeditó en 26 ocasiones hasta las vísperas de la revolución rusa en 1917. Algunas alusiones del libro (como qué alimentos eran buenos para los señores y cuáles debían destinarse a los sirvientes) y la perspectiva, más que burguesa, noble, de su autora hicieron que, en los igualitarios tiempos del torbellino revolucionario, el libro fuera proscrito por las autoridades soviéticas y cayera en el olvido. ¿Cayera en el olvido? ¡Nada de eso! Ocho décadas más tarde, y una vez superada la Perestroika y arrumbada la revolución, el recetario fue rápidamente recuperado y, de hecho, fue uno de los ‘clásicos’ que se reeditó tras la ‘revolución’ de 1991. La mayor parte de los viajeros que llegan al aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte se suben a un coche rumbo a las playas del sur o El Teide. Sin embargo, muchos olvidan o no saben que a 5 kilómetros del aeropuerto está San Cristobal de Laguna, una ciudad de arquitectura colonial, patrimonio de la humanidad. Durante mi estancia allí tuve suerte con mi elección de restaurantes. La primera noche acabé en La carpintería. El segundo me aventuré a tomar una pizza en Rucola y Grana. Al día siguiente probé El Figon, que también resultó ser muy bueno. En todas comí de maravilla. Si quieres alejarte de las hordas, éste es el sitio para ti.
No fue hasta mi cuarta visita a París cuando descubrí el Museo de las Falsificaciones o Musée de la Contrefaçon. La recepcionista del hotel en el que me hospedé me lo aconsejó. Me llamó la atención descubrir que lo de tratar de dar gato por liebre es una práctica ancestral. De hecho, en el museo se exhiben falsificaciones que datan del siglo II antes de Cristo… También me sorprendieron las falsificaciones de obras de arte de artistas como Rodin o Dalí. Aunque lo más llamativo fue descubrir que los falsificadores no solo tienen en su punto de mira los objetos de lujo, sino que son capaces de ‘clonar’ desde productos de limpieza, farmacéuticos, juguetes o hasta, incluso, ¡salsa ketchup!

The next day I tried El Figon, which also turned out to be very good. I ate superbly at all of them. If you want to escape the hordes, this is the place for you.

It wasn’t until my fourth trip to Paris that I discovered the Musée de Contrefaçon (Counterfeiting Museum). The receptionist at the hotel suggested that I visit. The first thing that caught my attention was discovering that faking things is an age-old practice. In fact, there are exhibits in the museum of forgeries dating back to the second century BC… The fakes of pieces by artists such as Rodin or Dali also surprised me. However the most surprising thing was to find that counterfeiters don’t only focus on luxury items, but are also capable of ‘cloning’ anything from cleaning products, pharmaceuticals, toys or even ketchup!

Si viajas a Atenas es muy probable que lo hagas para conocer la cuna de la democracia y la cultura occidental. Las visitas obligadas a la Acrópolis, el Museo de la Acrópolis o el Ágora es la mejor forma de hacerse una idea de cómo era la Atenas de hace más de 2.000 años. Para conocer la de hoy, una buena opción es darse una vuelta por el pintoresco barrio de Kypseli. Situado al norte de la ciudad, en los últimos años se ha convertido en lugar de residencia de buena parte de la población inmigrante de la ciudad, pero también de intelectuales y artistas que suelen tener en los numerosos clubes y cafés repartidos por el barrio sus principales puntos de reunión.
Por definición, el buscador de discos de vinilo es amante de la rareza y la frikada. Pues bien, esto debería tener doble bonus freak con mortal y tirabuzón. En Valletta, la capital de Malta, está situada la tienda de Anthony D’Amato, una tienda de discos (la única que vi en toda Malta) en la que uno puede encontrar vinilos de muchos grupos pero, sobre todo, de las grandes leyendas de la música maltesa. 80 años de grandes éxitos isleños condensados en el pequeño establecimiento fundado en 1885 y con sede en St. John Street. Por los nombres de algunas de las leyendas del lugar, mejor no me preguntéis.
A mí me resulta complicado pasármelo tan bien en nueve metros cuadrados, salvo que esos nueve metros cuadrados sean los de un bar donde esté tocando Bob Dylan. Pero creo que no suele acceder a actuar en espacios tan reducidos. El caso es que la tienda de la revista Monocle en Marylebone, es un ejemplo de cómo la superficie y la calidad no son conceptos que estén reñidos. Números atrasados, bolsas y algunos otros productos (no muchos, que no caben), hacen del lugar uno de mis favoritos de Londres.

By definition, the vinyl record hunter is a fan of all things weird and wonderful. OK, so this has to be double bonus weird with a twist somersault. It’s hard for me to have a good time in just nine metres squared, unless that nine metres squared space is a bar where Bob Dylan is playing. I don’t think he tends to perform in such limited space. The question is that the shop belonging to Monocle Magazine, in Marylebone, is an example of how surface area and quality are not necessarily mutually exclusive concepts. Back issues, bags and other products (not a lot – they don’t fit) make this one of my favourite places in London.

The Barcelona City Council, Spanish Olympic committee, the Upper Council for Sport and the Regional government of Catalonia are entities that conform the Barcelona Olympic Foundation. The foundation inherited the legacy of the Olympic Games held in Barcelona in 1992. Its mission is to conserve and spread the values left behind by the games. 20 years after its creation, from its headquarters in the Museu Olímpic i de L’Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch, the foundation continues to work with the mission to promote the values of sport. With this in mind, the Centro de Estudios Olímpicos y del Deporte Juan Antonio Samaranch has been created, located in gate 13 at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. The Olympic Museum, the CEO Samaranch, the BCN Sports Film Festival, Sportfilm.tv, the international acuarela contest and the Olympic Forum, now in its 9th edition, are some of the tools used by the Barcelona Olympic Foundation to advance sport.

¿Has probado alguna vez un helado de sandwich? ¿Y de chupa-chups? ¿O de caipirinha o naranja con cardamomo? Mi referente en los helados es Italia pero cuando entré en una heladería de Lisboa, llamada Artisani, pensé que Portugal tampoco está nada mal. Los helados son artesanales y los hacen en la misma tienda. De hecho, puedes ver cómo los elaboran mientras tomas tu helado.
Los que somos de La Mancha y, por lo tanto, acostumbrados en su mayoría al secarral y los campos llanos, alucinamos cuando llegamos a un sitio como Praga, que ya está bien de por sí, y econtramos parques o jardines como los que allí hay. El que más me gustó se encuentra en el margen oeste del río Moldava, en la ladera de una colina, y fue diseñado por František Maxmilián Kaňka. Se trata del jardín Vrtbovska, al que se accede por la calle Karmelitská. Para pasar toda la mañana. Y toda la tarde.
La mayor parte de los turistas deciden apilarse en los pequeños autobuses que cubren el tramo costero entre Santa Margherita Ligure y Portofino. Sin embargo, hacerlo es renunciar a contemplar con calma uno de los paseos más bonitos del Mediterráneo. Los cinco kilómetros que separan cada localidad están recubiertos de vegetación y mansiones preciosas. Apenas se ha construido nada desde los años sesenta debido a las estrictas leyes que regulan el urbanismo en la zona. Una vez terminado el paseo, que recomiendo hacer de ida y vuelta, Santa Margherita tiene un puñado de buenos restaurantes para recuperar energía.

The one I liked the most is on the western bank of the Vltava River, at the foot of a hill, and was designed by Frantisek Maximilian Kanka. It is the Vrtbovska Garden, and the entrance is on Karmelitska Street. To spend the whole morning. And the whole afternoon.

Most tourists decide to pile onto the little buses that cover the stretch of coastline between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. However, to do so is to miss the opportunity to quietly contemplate one of the most beautiful walks in the Mediterranean. The five kilometres separating these two towns are lined with rich vegetation and stunning mansions. Hardly anything has been built since the 60s, in line with the area’s strict urban development laws. Once you’ve finished your walk, which I would recommend doing in both directions, there are loads of good restaurants in Santa Margherita for you to recover your energy.
