Addition instead of Demolition According to a decision by Munich City Council, the “Gesundheitshaus” [House of Health], an example of early 60s architecture will be dismantled and replaced by a new “low-energy” building. An invitated competition for this assignment has already been organized. About 13,000 square meters of usable floor space, functioning infrastructure, and a high-grade brick-facade – is this really just waste? Our design task was to explore alternatives to tabula rasa thinking: which qualities and energies already exist and how can they be developed further? Can the program for the new building be realized by re-using, adapting and extending the old building? Which additional values are brought to the fore by the friction between new demands and existing possibilities? Parallel to the design task we investigated and developed different transformation and re-evaluation strategies. How can the principles of reduce, re-use, recycle be applied practically to built architecture? Are there strategic possibilities for avoiding unnecessary renewal? Which tools can be developed to accomplish this? The design examined questions of perception and presentation as well as the development of strategies and tools. The semester ended with a demonstration in front of the building as part of a public perception-changing process.

city repair kit the aim of ‚city repair kit’ is to learn and apply the 11 tools of transformation, which were developed following the value system of reduce / reuse / recycle: Perception /Maintenance / Behavior / Renovation / Conversion / Infill / Redesign / Subtraction / Addition / Material Recycling / Gestalt Recycling. The object for repair – in munich - could be chosen by the participants of the design seminar. Mostly it were objects or situations currently under threat of demolition – like the Müllerstraße 6 housing block, the former bus-station Olympiazentrum, the Quiddecenter in Neuperlach, the Hotel Königshof or the Hauptbahnhof of Munich – but also historical or protected buildings like the Berufsschule Luisenstraße, the former military shool in Pappenheimstraße and the Maxwerk. A repair was also proposed for the newly built housing area ‚Arnulfpark’. The aproach of the city repair kit was to first take in and document the existing situation in all its details and meanings – then to develope a program out of the potentials of the existing – and apply the strategies to implement this program and strengthen or transform the existing. The strategies were ranging from conservative approaches like maintainance and repair – or just changing the perception of the existing situation – to extensive additions and changes.
