SUCCESS IS THE SUM OF SMALL STEPS The price of a product is, in short, its manufacturing cost and the net amount that the manufacturer would like to obtain from sales, i.e. its margin. In the block of articles devoted to the production department, we will omit the question of margin, although it often has a greater impact on the final price than production costs and is an individual strategy of each manufacturer. We will certainly raise this issue on another occasion. In return, we will show what can be achieved when the efforts of the employees involved are supported by the supplier for whom customer care does not end with the delivery of the ordered products. Writing about modernity and progress in the context of the MAEM production department, I am happy to once again

mention Seco and its local distributor, Dasa (our first joint project with Seco, you can read in the fifth issue of the M Magazine). Our organisations share a common approach to customers and their needs. At MAEM we also work with our customers to find the best solutions for them. We are able to do so thanks to modern technical facilities, experienced specialists and, above all, an appropriate approach to partnership in business. We know how important it is to support the client in partnership. This time we also have the pleasure to see it for ourselves. O ur te chn o l o gi s t s , to g eth e r w i th a representative of the supplier of machining tools, spent two days studying the impact of the use of various types of cutting inserts on the speed and correctness of roughing processes.

The turning process of one of the shafts, which is a spare part of the desalinator was tested. Mass production is the most appropriate method to illustrate how an apparently insignificant factor affects its costs. Thanks to research, which allowed for the selection of optimal cutting tools, the unit production time of one piece was reduced by eight minutes. Eight minutes is not much when producing a complex workpiece. However, the eight minutes of CNC machine work saving in two -shif t annual production gives over 3500 pieces more. The result of joint actions is an increase in production efficiency by as much as 35%! Research, tests, cooperation with a trusted supplier brings an effect in the form of a significant reduction in

production costs and, consequently, in the prices of offered goods. A detailed report prepared after the above mentioned tests contains comparative parameters tested in the cutting inserts process. It clearly indicates the specific type of inserts, the use of which gives an optimal result of their wear in relation to the number of elements machined in a given time. Time and tool wear savings will certainly be reflected in lower production costs. This will allow us to offer the highest quality products at even more competitive prices. This is how we build our competitive advantage without compromising quality and without lowering margins.

EXPANSION OF RELAXATION ZONES

The average time to receive an offer takes less than two hours, another sales record, no disruption of the plant's operation during the lockdown period, further certificates and proofs of recognition, a new strategic direction of the company's development... These are just a few achievements that we can boast about. Nothing in life, especially in the professional sphere, comes alone. A person or an organisation has no less, no more, and exactly as much as it has earned. Behind each of the successes I mentioned in my introduction there are many

authors. They are MAEM employees. Our common success was born out of commitment, the courage to go beyond the usual patterns, experience, and when it is lacking, a great desire for self-improvement. It takes a lot of work to get to the top, to stay on top of it - even more work. Even superheroes must sometimes have a moment's rest. A relaxed, satisfied employee is the calling card of any employer. Dear Reader, I hope that your employer's company philosophy also puts the employee first.

We also appreciate the comfort of guests visiting our departments. It is up to the guest whether they want to meet in one of the conference rooms or prefer the intimate atmosphere of the relaxation zone. I hope that one day we will meet for coffee in one of the relaxation zones in the MAEM Krakow department or the one located in Zator. You are welcome to join us now. In the meantime, we want to show you what the new relaxation zones will look like just before the edition of our autumn magazine.

REPUTATION Is there anything more valuable?

What guides you in choosing a particular product? Why do you look for specific brands you know, instead of any bread, yoghurt or water, when you do your daily shopping? What makes you willing to pay more for ‘your’ product than for similar, competitive ones? The answer to all these questions, and at the same time the main factor that determines your choice, is reputation. Have you ever wondered what makes you trust a product? At MAEM, we have long asked ourselves this key question and focused on hearing from customers that our brand is trustworthy in their eyes. Trust is, above all, the feeling of security that the product you use meets your expectations and the awareness that it will not let you down. In the technical industry, confidence in products is crucial. Customers entrust us with machines whose condition directly affects the safety and reliability of ships. It is clear that the quality of consumables directly translates into their correct and sufficiently long service life, so there is no question of building trust when the supplier's policy is to save on quality.

8 | Autumn 2020 | MAEM Values

Suppliers who agree on quality compromises will never be able to build a long-term relationship with the customer and who, on the pretext of illusory savings, will be exposed to additional work due to unnatural wear and tear of parts or will bear the cost of repairing failures caused by the poor quality of the parts used. That is why, in our daily work we warn our customers against supplying ‘some’ parts and using MAEM products at the same time. What makes us talk about trust in the context of MAEM? - Above all, customers who, thanks to our approach, have become loyal recipients of the brand. We treat cooperation with them as a reward for the effort and huge investments that make us fully transparent and we do not have to be ashamed of anything or hide. Our recipe for success? We can betray it because it is not possible to achieve it for small manufacturies or manufacturers who have their production departments located locally and have limited control over them. Quality means, above all, committed and experienced people. Once you have them, you must provide them

with state-of-the-art machines, access to technology and a modern workplace. There is no quality, and therefore no confidence, without continuous research and testing at every stage of production. Trust cannot simply be bought, although its price can also be expressed in specific amounts. The cost of trust, expressed in cash, is tens of millions of euros invested in the quality. The result of the investment is pride when you can invite your partners to the factory and you do not have to hide anything from them. We take this opportunity to once again invite you to visit our factory. Are other suppliers so open? Isn't that how you build your reputation?

RUNNING AND HELPING MAEM in Poland Business Run

For the eighth time on the first Sunday of September, Polish companies from eight of our country's largest cities have joined together under the common slogan: 'You run - you help'. This is the leitmotif of the Poland Business Run, i.e. a run that combines good fun, integration and, above all, helping those in need. Last year, as many as seven thousand runners appeared at the Main Market Square in Krakow, and the competition took place on the same day in eight other Polish cities, including Warsaw, Poznan, Katowice and Wroclaw, bringing together over 27 thousand people. This year's run was an exceptional event because, due to the epidemiological situation and the ban on mass events, the organisers decided to have a virtual form of fun. Thanks to the electronic application, the participants had the opportunity to run a distance of 4 km in any place for themselves. For the first time MAEM Runners Team took part in the race. Thanks to the virtual formula we created a team consisting of employees of both company branches. The MAEM Poland Business Run took place near Oswiecim, where our Production and Logistics Centre is located, and Krakow, where MAEM's headquarters are located. Poland Business Run is an event that fits perfectly into the MAEM philosophy. Since the beginning of the company's existence we have been taking part in charity actions with pleasure. By participating in the Poland Business Run, 10 | Autumn 2020 | MAEM. I like it!

just like other teams, we have helped beneficiaries with physical disabilities. The result of the team's participation, apart from the honourable place in the general classification, was good fun, a healthy Sunday and, what is most important, the awareness that we may have made someone in need receive the help they were waiting for.

There are no winners or loosers among the participants of the Poland Business Run. The winners are people in need, who, thanks to the joint involvement of thousands of runners, receive help and a chance for a better tomorrow. We congratulate the eight daredevils who have proudly represented us this year. We promise to be at the start next year.

WE THINK GLOBALLY WE LIVE LOCALLY The situation that we have all been facing for more than six months has led many people to change their perception of life, its principles and its value system. Things that are apparently trivial, obvious, need to be given and attention today. The weakest and most vulnerable in the face of the global threat have become even more vulnerable. The world, temporarily halted by a pandemic, must move forward, life goes on. September in Poland has been a month of returning to school after the summer break for years. Our youngest children were forced to leave the schools, what, in the face of the epidemic, happened in April. The current situation is an excellent opportunity to take an even closer look at local needs, living globally. MAEM is in principle constantly involved in a variety of charitable activities. You will find a summary of these in the next, winter edition of M Magazine. In response to local needs and care for children returning to school, we have funded modern disinfectant dispensers. Dispensers, whose additional function is a remote examination of body temperature. Together with the Mayor of Zator Mr. Mariusz Makuch, we handed them over to the four largest schools in the municipality where our production plant is located. There is no greater treasure than children and caring for the youngest is a priority for ever y society. We are pleased that, as a company, we were once again able to help the local community. These activities are part of our Corporate Social Responsibility policy.

SEA MONSTERS Lurking in the sea

Although Haloween is approaching, please take this article with the utmost seriousness. The facts described in it are supported by the accounts of sailors and other credible witnesses. In the legends and legends, there are countless masses of various creatures inhabiting the seas and oceans, as well as other parts of the world. We will present only a few of the most dangerous ones, as describing them all would take the whole book. Most of the creatures

16 | Autumn 2020 | Lifestyle

have been observed in ancient times but, as the legends say, they are immortal, so you never know what lurks in the depths, in the areas you may be heading towards... Monstrous sharks, water snakes and Krakens are some of the more common and aggressive creatures that have been making life difficult for sailors since the dawn of time. It is true that no one has scientifically proven the existence of sea monsters, but no one has scientifically proven that they do not exist... So far man has only

explored 5% of the sea depths. We know less about them than about the surface of Mars or the Moon. Sea monsters have accompanied sailors for centuries. Information about the existence of astonishing and terrifying creatures can be found in legends and my ths - especially in Nordic my thology - and in numerous historical and literary messages as early as in ancient times - for example in Aristotle. He wrote about the great sea snake in the first

century A.D. Pliny the Elder, and later - in the 4th century - Rutilius Taurus Aemilianus Palladius and Gaius Iulius Solinus. They are also mentioned in the Old Testament. Later on, these relations multiply alarmingly, covering more and more distant corners of the world. In the Middle Ages, the first maps were created with the exact location of sea monsters. In 1539, on the initiative of Swedish Archbishop Uppsala Olaus Magnus, such a map was created, showing the relatively correct shape of the Scandinavian Peninsula and Baltic Sea coast.

In 1570, the Flemish car tographer Abraham Ortelius went one step further. He marked the places where the most dangerous monsters can be found on the world map. In the following centuries, hundreds of encounters with water monsters were recorded. Are we dealing here with hallucinations, deception, natural optical phenomena, or are we simply meeting 'overgrown' or mutated specimens of long known species? But is it not worth considering the possibility of survival to our times in the original or degenerate form of animals long considered

extinct? These and other questions have long been answered in countless publications by creators and supporters of various theories. The number of reports is growing, photographs and films appear, the authenticity of which is, of course, undermined, but there is still no final proof - a well-preserved individual living here and now. Moving on to presenting some of the most dangerous monsters that still inhabit the seas and oceans of our planet

Leviathan Leviathan is a monster appearing in the Old Testament. It is significant that in Hebrew, the word 'Leviathan' also means a whale but its source is the word 'coil', which may indicate how this legendary and monstrous animal was imagined. The Leviathan is present in many Jewish legends. It is claimed to be a monster much bigger than a whale, and what is more, it feeds on whales. It resembles a snake a bit, but a huge one, surrounding the whole Earth. It symbolises the spirit of evil, which is only to be destroyed on the day of the Last Judgment.

Kraken Another legendary sea monster is the Kraken. It was supposed to live in the depths, but also to block the Strait of Gibraltar, as it has been reported in ancient legends. In many stories, the Kraken lures ships, pretending to be an island, and when the seafarers go ashore, it wakes up and immerses, dragging the seafarers, too. Some legends say that he attacks ships as a servant of Neptune, god of all waters. He is known for many books and films, most often resembling a huge octopus in appearance.

18 | Autumn 2020 | Lifestyle

Sea snake Another legendary creature reigning in the waters is the sea snake, which is said to have been observed many times in different parts of the world. As early as in the 17th and 18th century sea snakes were considered to be a real existing species. Today, however, they are considered as a research object only in cryptozoology. Reports about sea snakes have already appeared in various mythologies, the earliest in the Nordic ones. One of the most famous observed specimens is the so-called Gloucester snake, which was supposed to be almost 30 metres long. It was the subject of research and it was discovered quite quickly that there was no evidence of this monster. And yet there are still people who believe in this animal, hiding somewhere in the deep sea. As far back as the 20th century, the press reported cases of this monster’s meeting. Another case of a documented encounter between man and a sea snake was supposed to be a Caddy, resembling a creature with flippers, with a camel's head. To this day, photographs of a carcass thrown out of the sea, which could not be identified and which is identified with the sea snake, have been preserved. What is significant, however, is that with time, reports of encounters with Caddy have become increasingly rare. However, there are still scientists who maintain to this day that the numerous and contradictory reports of witnesses must not be a mistake and that the Caddy is an unidentified animal. If you are a seafarer and you have had a nice time reading this article, we would like to let you know that this was its purpose. If you have met a sea monster during your travels do not forget to tell us about it. We will certainly warn others. Happy Halloween

PORT CITIES SEA OF ATTRACTIONS A re you heading to a p or t ab out which you know nothing? We will try to help you.As the old saying goes, 'It is not just work that makes you live'. How can you make the most of your free time when you are in port? Each of them is different, has its own specificities and climate. They have one thing in common - each one is beautiful in his own way and is worth spending some time on. Especially, when you have a lot of time, waiting for unloading or going out to sea. We are starting a new series of articles in which we will tell you how to spend

time in Europe's most famous port cities. We start with the Tri-City - the ports closest to MAEM headquarters in Krakow. The Tri-City - Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot - are still three separate cities, but as they developed, the borders naturally began to blur and as a result, one of the largest Polish agglomerations was created, with about 750,000 inhabitants. Each of the cities that make up it has its own specificity, each one deserves to be known more closely. We will focus on the most important information, and it will take a maximum of two days to see the attractions we will tell you about.

◀ Gdynia, Port

Gdynia is the youngest part of the TriCity. Originally, it was a fishing village, later a holiday resort, which was granted city rights in 1926. It owes its dynamic development to the sea port. The decision to establish it was due to the hostile attitude of the authorities of the Free City of Gdansk to Poland. Construction began in 1921, and in 1923 the port of Gdynia accepted the first ship under a foreign flag - SS ‘Kentucky’. Further history of the city and the port is its dynamic development - in 1930 the first regular passenger line GdyniaNew York was launched. In 1934, Gdynia became the largest port on the Baltic Sea in terms of volume of transhipments, and at the same time the most modern in Europe. As a result of World War II, the port was largely destroyed, but the city itself managed to avoid significant losses. The post-war years were marked by further development of the city and the port. Today, Gdynia is a modern maritime centre, one of the fastest growing Baltic ports.

◀ Gdynia, Kosciuszko Square

A characteristic place on the map of Gdynia is the representative Kosciuszko S quare Luxur y hotels , res taurant s and bars, the Music Theatre, beautiful modernist tenement houses and the Polish Nav y Command building are located nearby. The Sea Towers skyscraper built in 2003-2006 dominates the area. There are also numerous monuments on Kosciuszko Square itself, e.g. the Sea Towers: The Polish Sailor 1939-1945, the Polish Armed Forces in the West and Home Army Soldiers, as well as the Polish Maritime Monument unveiled in 2018. The South Pier is an extension of Kościuszko Square. The ORP ‘Blyskawica’, the oldest surviving destroyer taking part in World War II, currently transformed into a museum, and a training sailing ship - the ‘Dar Pomorza’ museum - are docked there.

Sopot, Pier

Sopot is a popular holiday resort, locate d b et we en G d y nia and G dan sk . Beautiful, wide, sandy beaches and rich nightlife attract crowds of tourists all year round. The best known symbol of Sopot is the longest pier in the Baltic Sea. It is about half a kilometer long the walking part is 511.5 m long, of which 458 m enters the Gulf of Gdansk. In the head of the pier is located the ‘Pier’ seaport in Sopot.

Lifestyle | Autumn 2020 | 21

Gdansk, Westerplatte

Gdansk is the largest and the oldest of the three centres making up the Tri-City. It boasts a rich history. The first records date back to 980, when the missionary Wojciech came to the pagan lands. Over the centuries the city has passed from hand to hand several times under the rule of Poland, Prussia or Germany. It was here that the key events of the 20th century, crucial for Poland and Europe, took place. One of the first shots of World War II fell on Westerplatte when the battleship ‘Schlezwig-Holstein’ attacked the Polish coast.

◀ Gdansk, Shipyard

In the course of its operations, the Gdansk Shipyard has built over 1,000 fully equipped seagoing vessels, including container ships, passenger ships and sailing ships. The Gdansk shipyard is home to the NSZ Z ‘ Solidarność’, Europe's largest workers' movement, which initiated talks with Polish communist government. The August 1980 agreements were signed at the shipyard and, later on, the NSZZS Solidarnosc had a huge impact on the overthrow of the communist system in Poland.

Gdańsk, The crane Today, Gdansk is a modern metropolis, inextricably linked to the sea and the maritime industry. The city has a beautiful and rich old town, whose element is also probably the most recognizable local monument - the crane on the Long Embankment.

We hope that the article will encourage you to get to know the Tri-City Metropolis more closely and spend here nice moments before your further journey.

In the next article, which will tell you ab ou t th e curio s itie s of th e main European port cities, we will stay in Poland. This time, however, we will move to its western coast, to Szczecin.

DISINFECTION IN MARITIME TRANSPORT

The global pandemic threat has made us all start to look closely at hand hygiene. In this difficult time more important than usual. The need is the mother of the invention, and in a short period of time many different disinfectants have been developed for various industries or medicine. The product intended for our nearest marine industry was created thanks to the invention of the Mergi company, which owns the MarineSept brand. Mr Tomasz Reszka, Renergi's sales manager, will tell us about it in short.

24 | Autumn 2020 | Lifestyle

Where did you get the idea of developing liquid for transport? The common denominator connecting the founders of MarineSept is their love of transport. Our career paths have been linked by one of its more spectacular and exclusive branches, namely sea transport. Here we have friends who, just like us, are calmed down by the breeze of the sea. Here we have partners who, like us, know the hardships and dangers that accompany shipping professionals on a daily basis.

Not all problems can be solved but some of them can be dealt with. We believe that by working together on solutions we can make our lives better and, above all, safer. We have decided to take a professional look at hand hygiene during our daily work in transport. We are all aware of the importance of this issue and we know from our experience how dif ficult it is to take care of it. Inspired by the pristine Scandinavian nature and the cleanliness of the seas there we have found an ef fective solution to one of the

important issues we all face on a daily basis. What risks do transport workers face, especially international transpor t workers? International transport is particularly dangerous in epidemiological terms. Harbours , transshipment stations , public toilets or canteens are concentrations of bacteria and viruses from all over the world. The organism shows less resistance to bacteria and viruses which it does not encounter on a daily basis and which stand in its way during exotic journeys. Frequent changes in the environment, lack of sleep, changes

in time zones, that is to say, aspects inherent in transport are conducive to a decrease in our body's immunity. For most microorganisms, the hand flora is a perfect place to multiply. Our organism, left without help, is not able to cope on its own.

What are the s p e cial f eature s of MarineSept? MarineSept hand disinfectant is a solution created for the transport industry. Our daily hand disinfectant is manufactured in Europe, based on a unique formula developed in Scandinavia. MarineSept has a Biocidal Product Authorization No. 6491 issued by the
