PEOPLE WHO CARE Not to be replaced by machine

In our quar terly reviews covering production related topics we write about small details which, combined together, result in our products being considered by customers as something more than just one of many options they have. We point out subtle distinctions that make our business partners look no longer for any spare parts. They choose MAEM parts instead, knowing that the machines they are responsible for have been provided with the top quality parts.

4 | Spring 2020 | Made in MAEM

We admit that the topic we originally planned to cover here has been replaced with this special article in connection with the current crisis spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the distressing developments, we have taken steps to prevent its possible consequences. This has given us an honourable opportunity to write about the most valuable asset of each company or business organisation: committed employees.

Scientists say that for the majority of us workplace is our second home. Assuming that we work eight hours, five days a week, during 50 years of our working life we spend as many as 13 years at work! This article features MAEM employees who voluntarily agreed that due to the pandemic, the workplace would literally be their second home. The produc tion depar tment is the heart of any manufacturing company.

All other organisational units making up a coherent whole around it form a system of connected vessels that provide necessary raw materials and offer products to customers around the world. When production is stopped, the existence of all other departments does not make any sense and the company, as an organism, begins to die. It is the production department, together with the quality control department, the purchasing department and the logistics, that keeps the organisation alive and functioning. Stopping one of the chain units has a disturbing effect on the work of the others.

expensive machines and equipment will not substitute the commitment and dedication of people who care about their workplace. Thank you!

This article is about a group of employees of our production centre, with some of them normally working at other departments. They have one thing in common: they cannot work online. Given the real threat of the whole facility closure in the case of coronavirus detection, the group voluntarily went on a one-week shift during which they took up residence in their workplace, that is MAEM production centre. Sacrif icing their personal lives and staying away from their relatives at the difficult time of pandemic, our heroes took matters into their own hands and, working hard, ensured the continuity of most of the key processes at the company. We, who can work from home at this difficult time, take our hats off to them. We thank them and feel privileged to form a well-functioning organism, MAEM company, together with them. And finally, going back to the point already made, let the present situation make us all realise that even the most

YOU ARE NOT ALONE Every customer expects the supplier to focus its full attention on them throughout the whole cooperation process: from assistance in the choice of proper products to technical support when they are being used. We are happy to cooperate with the ever-increasing number of customers who can benefit from the highest standards of cooperation set by MAEM. MAEM is not only a manufacturer of spare parts supplied to thousands of ships every year. MAEM offers stability to its customers and cares for their needs. Making purchases from MAEM, our customers get under way together with us. We put particular emphasis on our business partners’ comfort at each stage of the cooperation. To this end, we constantly improve the sales and customer service process. Being an engineering and manufacturing company, MAEM believes that a key element of post-sale service cooperation is technical support provided to the users of its products.

MAEM Service Sometimes spare parts themselves do not provide a solution to the problem. A separator, like any other technical equipment, is subject to wear and tear after running well for some time. The use of parts originating from a reliable source can extend the period of proper running of the machine, but the normal wear and tear process is inevitable and cannot be prevented. In this case, instead of wasting money and time, it is worth seeking a professional service. And such service is delivered by our service engineers who will provide a complete reconditioning of the separator or only the bowl. There are also different reasons of incorrect performance or failures of separators which are beyond our control. A dedicated article on them will appear in the next issue of our Newsletter. In the meantime, we would just like to mention that our servicemen are always willing to diagnose and solve the problem.

MAEM Instructions Satisfaction Guaranteed Cooperation with MAEM or one of its authorised distributors means that our business partners can feel fully safe. We are always within arm’s reach, ready to help quickly by answering any and all questions concerning the supplied products. We attach mounting instructions and useful guidelines on how to correctly install machine parts to each order sent to our customers.

6 | Spring 2020 | Full ahead

All MAEM parts carry warranty. For warranty periods of specific product groups, please visit www.maem.com. If any of our customers has any doubts concerning the parts delivered, our engineers are at their disposal and they finish work only when the customer is fully satisfied with the proposed solution.

All these benefits come from being with MAEM. We congratulate all MAEM customers on the best choice they have made: use of our parts. And we would like to warn those who use also components originating from other sources of the possible consequences of that. When brought into contact with products from an unreliable source, MAEM parts may be destroyed, thus damaging or stopping the whole machine. Use products from reliable suppliers only. Thank You for Your Trust

response to all their requests even if such requests are outside the scope of our work, is a distinguishing feature of the daily activities. One of the latest initiatives taken with our business partners in mind is protection of their employees against the coronavirus. Strongly committed to the task undertaken, we needed only a few days to come up with a free protective kit. It consists of a face shield made on a 3D printer we have at MAEM and an alcohol-based sanitizer with atomisers. Our kit can be delivered to any place, as requested by the customer. We are happy to be able to contribute to the containment of the coronavirus in different parts of the world at such a short notice.

We make every ef fort, every day, to ensure the top quality of all orders filled and services provided. This is possible thanks to the processes implemented at our company which guarantee a high quality of our solutions as well as delivery of complete orders on time agreed. If you are not among them yet, please remember that we would be happy to respond to each and every inquiry you will send to us.

MAEM FEMALE LEADER At MAEM, regardless of gender and position, everyone is equal. This is confirmed by statistics showing that 35% of all management positions in our company are occupied by women - s ays Qualit y D ire c tor at M A EM , Katarzyna Brodecka. W hy d i d yo u d e c i d e to w o rk f o r MAEM? Successively gaining skills and developing the ones I have, is something that has accompanied me for a very long time - for most of us, it is natural. Yes, and at some point in my life, the time has come to change and take a new direction, to develop professional wings. Potentially, the work at MAEM seemed to be a very developing one: the maritime industry - where I hadn't had the opportunity to work before, the team of young professionals (as advertised) and the possibility of realizing my own ideas - were something that encouraged me to apply. The recruitment interview itself was surprising - I did not expect such a high level as for a Polish company which is not a corporation. Additional advantages were also a noticeable pro approach to the quality of the interviewer, as well as a visible in the company attaching great importance to the aesthetic values of the equipment. After the first days of work, I have already known that the feeling and positive impression did not mislead me. After a few years, I can confidently say that to this day, this initial fondness has not passed. At least for me. What is the greatest value to you while working at MAEM? It probably sounds trivial, but people. The people who create this organization, its culture and atmosphere. Mutual support and trust - also in the workplace (where I spend a lot of time) is something I cannot function without.

12 | Spring 2020 | MAEM. I like it!

Has the promotion to a direc tor 's position at MAEM changed anything in you? Of course. It changed my meeting c alendar to a more d y namic one Seriously, I think my awareness of the fact that every day can bring something completely different has changed. The plans from yesterday and the proverbial ‘today’ may be diametrically different. And I do not consider it in negative categories. What do you think makes it so difficult for women to take up managerial positions? Little self-confidence, fear of failure and discrimination are the first things that come to my mind. I myself have encountered many times during my career that men treat women ‘from above’. It also affected me personally. One of my first employers, he hired only women and spoke openly about the fact that it is very profitable for him in business (the clients were mainly men - presidents, company owners). Our cooperation did not last long. I also heard more than once that I managed to achieve something by the proverb ‘pretty eyes’ - where in practice, achieving the goal was associated with hard work and many sacrifices but also a lot of stubbornness and faith that it will succeed. Behaviour as above does not encourage further development and openness to business opportunities. Do women have it easier in business? I don't think so. Does being a woman in a managerial position present you with any challenges, or does gender not play a role here? Of course, a change of position always p o ses great challenges , esp ecially in terms of new duties or responsibilities. However, I do not have the i m p r e s s i o n t h a t g e n d e r m a t te r s in MAEM . 3 5% of all management

positions at the MAEM are held by women. Looking at an industry that is much more suited to men, it seems to be quite a decent result. However, this area can be further improved.

I am proud to take on a new role in the organization, so I think the biggest challenge for me may be to encourage other women to believe in themselves and not be afraid to reach out to their professional dreams - of course if it is something they want. What do you think are the strong points of women in business? What distinguishes them from the opposite sex and what are their advantages over it? It seems to me that women are inherently more sensitive than men, which makes them experience certain things more emotionally - it has its pros and cons. From my observations, also problem solving and showing openness to cooperation, in a business environment - it comes easier for women. What is your favourite tool to help you at work? I don't think it's ever been made yet. It seems to me that this is not a tool but a sum of small things that make the day enjoyable and allow you to spend it effectively: morning coffee, the opportunity to share or consult with colleagues or simply team solidarity. What do you like most about your work? That it's very unusual. On a daily basis, I deal with issues related not only to ensuring the quality of the system and product, meeting the requirements of interested parties, but also the development of the organizational culture (headed by Corporate Social R e sp on sibilit y) , human re s ource s management, as well as environmental

and Health and Safety activities. I also like the fact that everyone at MAEM is equal - regardless of their gender and position. What motivates you the most in your work and continuous professional development? Aiming to head towards the office and turn on the computer every day, with a smile on your face that does not come from a sense of duty, but above all, from professional curiosity and openness to challenges in life.

Being aware of your own limitations and wanting to overcome them is what we should work on every day. What, outside of work, do you do with passion? What I always find time for is to make traveling dreams come true. So far, I have managed to visit almost thirty countries. This passion, however, makes my schedule tight to the limit. It happens that during a weekend extended by one day, I visit two countries.

Planning such trips is not easy. They are also often physically exhausting, but on the other hand, they provide mental relaxation and a dose of pleasure that recharges me for weeks to come, with positive energy. I always come back from a journey with a large collection of memories, captured, among other things, in photographs. During my travels, I am accompanied by a package of books on criminal topics - I absorb several dozen items of this kind every year.

What was the most difficult decision you made in your career? How do you rate it today? I think it was a decision to change the industry. Initially, my professional plans were to be exclusively related to quality in the medical field. And that's what happened at first. The first years of work was an adventure with companies mainly in the field of biomedical engineering and health care units. Then, basically by coincidence, the time for industry has come - research laboratory, railway, aviation, military, and now marine. In the meantime, I have also managed to carry out several private projects for service and training companies. Nevertheless, this is one of those decisions that I do not regret taking The experience gained in various industries and companies is still very useful to me and I often use it. What feature do you value most in other people? The ability to listen - treating the other person as a potential source of inspiration and learning something new. Your favourite quote is? ‘Don't go where the path leads. Instead, go where it doesn't exist and mark the trail...’ – Emerson ‘To travel is to live’ – Andersen What are your further plans? How will you surprise us in the future? Maybe I'll f inally f ind a balance b et ween work and private life. Unfortunately, I am a workaholic, and by the way, a perfectionist. I spend a lot of my free time working or studying. I find no other explanation for this than that I just like it. The perfect manager? - I don't think such a manager exists.

Katarzyna Brodecka - Quality Director at MAEM. Master of Quality Management at the Jagiellonian University. Graduate of postgraduate studies at the Cracow University of Technology and AGH University of Science and Technology. For over 10 years professionally connected with management and quality assurance, among others, in the following industries: medical, railway, aviation, military and maritime. OUR CUTE CHARLOTTE Charlotte is a small koala bear. A representative of functionally extinct species we have adopted virtually through the Friends of the Koala organisation, moved by the enormity of the disaster caused by gigantic bushfires in Australia last year. Koalas have been under absolute protection since 1927. Yet, their population is decreasing year by year. Destructive human activities such as successive reduction of the koala’s natural habitat and the enhanced greenhouse effect around the world are said to be the main reason for that. As a result of droughts, fires and cutting down of

16 | Spring 2020 | We love to help

eucalyptus trees, koalas lose their natural habitat and are forced to wander into the unknown facing many dangers on the way. A lot of them die being hit by cars or being attacked by other animals, still others die due to illnesses. T h e ko a l a p o p u l a t i o n f l u c tu a te s . According to scientific data published 8 years ago, the population was between 50,000 to 300,000 then. WWF estimates for 2019 showed the wild koala population of around 200,000. This year, the population has dropped by yet another 5,000 due to droughts and fires. If the decrease is not stopped, the

last representative of the species will die in 2050. A perfect way to help ill or homeless koala bears is a virtual adoption through which funds needed for their treatment and reintroduction are collected. We have adopted our cute Charlotte. Unfortunately, she suffers from hip dysplasia and will have to spend the rest of her life being looked af ter by the Friends of the Koala carers. We know that she is well and that our support goes to her as well as to the other animals under the foundation’s care.

IN THE SEA OF MEN For centuries, the role of women in shipping had been underrated and limited to the minimum. The situation began to change dramatically in the 20th century as a result of the growing number of women defying the existing limitations. To this day various belief s in what guarantees safety and brings fair winds are still popular among male ship crew members who need them to have a sense of control, to calm down and to have a fear of illness or death eased. The awareness of all perils at sea has led to numerous superstitions. One such superstition has it that the presence of a woman on board a military or merchant ship can make the sea gods

18 | Spring 2020 | Lifestyle

angry and, as a result of their anger, the weather conditions are likely to deteriorate dramatically and the sea will get rough. The belief in bad luck brought by the fair sex on board a ship caused women to be excluded from shipping and led to numerous tragedies. One of them was throwing overboard more than 60 women who, in 1379, ended their lives in the Irish Sea. What remained in contradiction to this superstition was the conviction that a ship with a figurehead representing a woman with widely open eyes and unsheathed breasts would be blessed with the grace of sea gods. Another explanation why women were not allowed to work on board a ship was the opinion that their good looks might distract the male

crew, be a source of conflicts, jealousy and lower the morale. Despite the danger of losing their lives, some women would decide to serve aboard a ship dressed as men. One of them was Mary Read, born in England in 1685. Shortly after birth, she was disguised by her mother as Mary’s lately deceased half-brother. Thanks to this, Mary and her mother could live comfortably on the money inherited from the dead boy’s grandmother into Mary’s teen years when, dressed as a boy, Mary found work as a foot-boy. She changed it then to serve aboard an English military ship and fought on many fronts.

It was the 18th century that saw the first changes in women’s place in shipping. They were due to the wars conducted at that time. Some captains agreed to women’s presence on board a ship together with their husbands. It was not easy though, as each woman deciding to join her husband had to share a hammock or a bunk with him as well as a daily food ration consisting of a piece of salted beef, dried peas, a roll and some cheese. Besides, her everyday duties included keeping the ship clean, seeing to it that the men had enough gunpowder during battles and nursing the injured. When, towards the end of the 18th century, very fast sailing ships called clippers came into use to transport foodstuffs over long distances (such as tea from China), the role of women on ships changed further. It became customary for the captain to take his wife on board a ship with him. She was to help him navigate, repair sails, assist in keeping the logbook and the accounts. One of the first women in the history of shipping to command the ship was Mary Ann Brown Patten. In 1856, she was the commander of an American

merchant ship Neptune’s Car for 56 days. At 19, pregnant with her first child, Mary had to rise to the occasion when her husband, the captain of the ship, collapsed from fatigue. She put an end to the mutiny and took command of the ship. Another woman who contributed to the change of women’s rights in shipping was Kate Tyrrell. In 1899, she became the first official female shipowner in the history. She had been fighting for it for 9 years, inspired by women’s suffrage

20 | Spring 2020 | Lifestyle

movement. During that time, the owner of her Irish ship, Denbighshire Lass, had been her trusted employee who had officially owned it for more than 13 years.

of the Hero of Socialist Labour, one of the highest awards in the USSR. She died in 1999 and one of the Kuril Islands was named after her by the government of the Russian Federation.

The first female captain of a merchant ship was Anna Shchetinina. It was the year 1935 and she was only 27 years old. Her first voyage on MV Chavycha started in Hamburg (where it had just been purchased) and ended in the Russian Far East. In acknowledgement of her services, Anna was awarded the medal

The next 72 years saw little changes in the role of women as ship captains. Only a small group of brave women fought for equality in shipping. Among them was Danuta Kobylińska-Walas, who became Poland’s first and the world’s second female master mariner as late as in 1962.

The breakthrough came in 2007, when a Swedish female mariner Karin StahreJanson was named captain of Monarch of the Seas, one of the world’s biggest cruise ships, with a capacity of 2744 passengers. She inspired other women and the number of female captains began to grow. Belinde Bennet is yet another example. When she took command of the ship in the Bahamas in 2016, she became the world’s first black female cruise ship captain. According to the es timates of the Chamber of Marine Commerce, 1.2

million persons are employed on ships now, out of which only 24 thousand are women. Why is it so? Women are still seen as the weaker sex, having no necessar y skills and competences to work in the shipping industry. To addition to all this, there is a common misconception that it is better to employ a man, even with lower qualifications, than a woman.

the number of men taking decisions based on facts and not on misconceptions will grow in the world, leading to increased presence of women in the shipping industry and, consequently, to increased effectiveness and efficiency of work on ships. Only the committed and the passionate contribute to the success in their workplace. It has nothing to do with you being a man or a woman.

For ages, due to ancient beliefs and wrong opinions, equal treatment of women and men in the shipping industry was not possible. Let us hope that

SPLASH OF FUN Energylandia is the biggest and most modern amusement park in Poland. Located 45 kilometres from Krakow and onl y 1 kilometre from M A EM manufacturing facility, it covers the area of 35 hectares and features 75 attractions, including as many as 15 water attractions to be found in three thematic zones. We will begin our tour with the one which is highly popular among those who seek blood-curdling experience: the ex treme zone. You can f ind exciting roller coasters there, including the highest and fastest one, the Speed Water Coaster. The speed of this giant’s cars exceeds the limit set for single carriageways in Poland and reaches 110 km/h. The structure measures 60 metres at its highest point and it is from there that 10 daredevils drop twice into

the water, going through a thrilling (and wet) adventure. This, coupled with a picturesque view of Energylandia seen from the top of the roller coaster, will certainly be a surprise to many a hero. For less extreme adventures, we will visit the family zone for a change. Both adults and children will have fun there, with 7 different water rides through quiet as well as rough waters of Energylandia rivers. One of the most spectacular is the Spill Water Anaconda, a ride on 20 seat boats during which you are in for numerous water splashing surprises. Steep waterfalls falling from the height of 10 and 15 meters propel the Anaconda cars up to 55 km/h and lots of fun is guaranteed. The Jungle Adventure is a much quieter water ride on 9 person inflatable boats, although fast currents, giant waves and wild

whirls are still to be expected. A less advanced sister of this attraction is the Atlantis, a 500 meters long wide water ride on special 4 person inflatable boats. Great fun for the families seeking adrenaline as well as something more relaxing. Those who want to take a rest will be enchanted by the Swiss Water Cups, a fairy tale, quiet water ride, with mysterious elves, lavish greenery and lovely nooks featuring gorgeous colours and decor passed en route. Others, who are ready to take up challenges, will certainly enjoy the next two attractions: the Viking Ride and the Splash Battle. The 4 person boats are equipped with water cannons shooting water at a couple of meters range and fierce battles can be fought. And last but not least obviously, the Water Park and the Tropical Fun zones

that make up the biggest outdoor water park consisting of 3 heated swimming pools and 13 slides, ranging from slides for children to the most extreme ones. The RMF MAXXX Kamikaze slide is one of such scaring adventures: even the bravest will feel their hearts racing when they begin the 90 meters journey down, dropping into the unknown from more than 15 meters. Visitors who want to loosen up, on the other hand, can relax lying back in deck chairs in the shade of umbrellas on a vast public beach and sipping delicious beverages from the Tropical Bar.

For more information on Energylandia, please visit: www.energylandia.pl IG: www.instagram.com/energylandia FB: www.facebook.com/EnergyLandia

When you decide to visit Energylandia, remember to take warm clothes to change into after all water attractions. And if you still feel cold, just drop by for a delicious, freshly roasted coffee at MAEM manufacturing facility.

BEACH OF MEMORIES Possible connotations of “beach may vary from blissful childhood memories and beautiful views to crowds of people, windbreaks and loud music. The Foonka brand has created a beach for all those who want to save only good memories of the Baltic shore that stir up positive emotions. Foonka products give us a moment of natural breath in this fast running world. Their designs are inspired by nature and tradition and thanks to the state-of-the-art fabric printing methods used, Foonka original, surprising and timeless products do not give in to the pressure of the fashion industry and changing trends. The elements hidden in the patterns make every HAYKA bedlinen set unique. Some people discover the lost coloured pencils, seagull footprints and a heart drawn in the sand in the motifs.

Two identical sets are almost impossible to find. A beach, a starry sky, a haystack, the Alpine meadow or moss from the forest fill the world of HAYKA collection with something not easily accessible to those who lead a hectic life. Foonka products bring memories of such moments and places and no wonder customers, irrespective of their age or cultural background, are so enthusiastic about them. All these natural patterns will look great not only on bedlinen, pillows and bed covers in the bedroom but also on table linen in the dining room. They will be a surprising element of minimalist interior designs or a charming addition to interiors featuring natural colours. Foonka products are made of 100% satin cotton weaved and printed in
