Pilar’s farewell

YEARS HAVE PASSED

SINCE I FIRST ARRIVED ON CAMPUS

to begin a journey full of joys, the unexpected, excitement, learning, and, lately, sadness. I arrived with the optimism and excitement I experience when starting something new, mixed with the trepidation of knowing that I followed a strong legacy of iconic and visionary heads of school at Madeira. What I can say for certain is that I never expected my last stint as a head of school to be so rewarding and fulfilling. I found a community that embraced me, embraced change, and was ready to work in shaping a new era. I suspect the search team that hired me may have had hopes and aspirations, but none of us could have predicted that ten years from my first day there would be so much disruption in education, or that the changes we made would have such an impact on teaching and learning. The joys of my tenure came from our community: girls, faculty and staff, trustees, and alumnae. I remember well that first fall, with a carnival for returning girls. Their shouts of happiness at seeing their friends again, and their delight in playing around the Oval brought the campus alive for me, and I relived that feeling each time we started a new school year. As the days passed and the seasons changed, I lived every tradition. Halloween parades, where one year the entire faculty and staff joined together in a rendition of Gangnam Style (with my grand entrance in a red convertible Mercedes Benz to the shock and awe of the girls!), or another year when the Admin Team dressed up as modules, were a special celebration (and coincided with my 2

birthday!). Thanksgiving, where each community member lights a candle around the Oval prior to sharing the traditional meal, brought a graceful togetherness in community. The famous Pratt scavenger hunt built spirit, no matter the weather in the short days of winter. Founder’s Day, Affirmation, and Graduation all contributed to building a strong community seeped in tradition and enlivened the campus. The unexpected and the excitement came from those that were willing to embrace change and embark with me on the journey to achieve our mission and vision. Change does not come easily in schools, and I was fortunate that our faculty and staff, while partly skeptical at first, were excited about building new structures, rethinking teaching and learning, increasing collaboration, and taking a bold risk in totally changing the way we structured time across the school year. The resulting Mod Schedule is now an integral part of Madeira’s identity and has become one of our major differentiators. Though no structure is perfect, our Mods have allowed us to focus on deep learning and forced us to reconsider what and how we teach. They have strengthened our Co-Curriculum internships, opening new possibilities for remote placements. The Mods have allowed us to build new programs and rethink physical space, integrating collaborative work in a Makerspace and Fab Lab. Finally, they have resulted in what will be a magnificent new academic building when built. Madeira is firmly poised to continue to manage disruption while remaining true to Lucy’s initial vision. Schools are a place for learning, and both students and adults participate in the process. At Madeira, I have also been a learner. From students, I have learned the connectedness and perils of social media, the little and big things that make a difference to each student, and the pleasure of seeing ninth graders follow a path of growth leading to graduation. From adults, I have learned how each contributes selflessly to making Madeira the best it can be, and this has kept me going in difficult times. From my administrative team members, most of whom I have worked with throughout my tenure and have

been wonderful partners and mentors, I have learned patience, boldness in trying innovations, listening as a crucial component of building trust, and the value of friendships that go beyond our professional relationships. I have also learned much about fundraising! While it took a village to reach $93 million in gifts combined over my tenure, I had never before attempted to raise such a sum. From Madeira trustees, I have learned what it means to work with a Board that is totally committed to their job of ensuring the School’s future and

sustainability and what true partnership means. I leave Madeira so enriched by every experience. As I pack up and get ready to depart, I am filled with sadness that these last months I was not able to enjoy the in-person, daily contacts with the girls and my colleagues at Madeira. On one of my final walks with Napoleon I took a step back to admire the view of the paddocks, horses grazing, in the last rays of sunlight. That was my first glimpse of Madeira, and it will be the last thing I see in the rearview mirror. The core of the campus, its life, and its deep history, I take with me as a cherished memory. I will have many beautiful stories to share with my family and friends in Quito. Farewell to all, and may the future be full of wondrous experiences and joy.

Unexpected is an understatement for a spring that brought a global pandemic, necessitating an overnight pivot to distance learning. On behalf of Madeira, I extend heartfelt love and support to everyone impacted by our difficult world situations. We considered postponing this issue of the magazine during this challenging time, but decided to move forward, as the School has done in continuing to deliver our mission during this time that needs Madeira women. Finally, Master Teachers demonstrate a strong commitment to lifelong learning. In order to be considered for a Master Teacher title, faculty must submit a portfolio of work in the fall, which is reviewed by all Department Chairs. The candidates are narrowed down, sent to the Dean of Faculty, and approved by the Head of School. Congratulations to all of our new Master Teachers!

DR. XIAOFU DING An unexpected journey Looking back, I would describe my teaching journey as an “unexpected” though fulfilling experience. From studying French in college in China to getting accepted to the Ph.D program in French Literature at New York University, to deciding to teach at an all-girls’ school after I finished my Ph.D studies, I made unexpected decisions, encountered unexpected obstacles, and experienced unexpected joys in my teaching career. I have learned there is no failure in life, only missteps. Failure connotes termination; missteps underline adjustment and moving forward. I have learned life is full of unexpected events: face them, cherish them, and celebrate them. I have also realized how much I am passionate about teaching, and how much I enjoy being a member of the Madeira community, and sharing the joy of learning with Madeira girls.

GLEN RUSSELL Learning with purpose I vividly remember the day in November 2015 when I was lying on the floor of our living room and my daughter Amelia was trying to crawl. She was on all fours rocking herself, looking at me perplexed as to what she was missing. My wife was looking at some job boards and she said, “Hey there’s an all-girls’ school just outside of DC that’s looking for a math teacher; you should apply.” I had never been to Virginia or DC, so I looked at the Madeira website to see what this place was all about and I found Madeira’s mission. At that point, I knew what I had to do. I had a purpose that I had not felt before then. When we say that we want to launch women who change the world, I’m not arrogant enough to think that spending 80 minutes working on Geometry or Statistics with me for a few weeks is going to make you all of a sudden be able to solve climate change—I mean, it would be great if you could. But I hope that when any of us share a classroom together, it’s at least a time that you don’t hate, which as a math teacher, I tell you, doesn’t happen all the time. It may not make a difference to the great big world around us, but I hope I can help you learn, and to me that makes a world of difference.

S H E I L A M C G R O RY A circuitous path I am so thankful for this honor. It’s truly meaningful to me on both a professional and a personal level. Like many people, my career has taken a circuitous path. Most recently, I moved to Washington the day before the Women’s March (not a coincidence) and began to look for a teaching position at an independent school. Madeira was at the top of my list, and when a position opened up I was overjoyed. It felt like a serendipity, like enormous good luck, like fate. I had never taught at an all-girls’ school before, but I absolutely love it. Every day I bring my whole self to the classroom: the mother, the student, the professional writer, the editor, the creative writer, the former wife, the independent woman. I’m grateful for my circuitous path—for all my life experiences—and every day I teach the young women of Madeira all I have learned. Thank you again for this honor.

L A R R Y P R AT T Learning with purpose I have been reflecting about my career as a teacher and why I love it so much. What is it about teaching that makes it a calling? Teaching is really, really fun. We teachers get to spend our days talking about subjects we love with people eager to learn. When we get that spark of recognition in our students’ faces, whether it’s understanding the connection between historical events or how to solve a math problem, it feels great. And we learn new things every day from our students. There are always fresh perspectives. And teaching is rewarding. We are thanked on a daily basis, even when we just administered a test! When graduates return, they tell us that their essays were the ones selected by a professor to share with the class, or that they are the only woman in their entire class that participates on a regular basis, or that they are entering a field because of a class they took at Madeira. All of this is extremely gratifying. We feel as though we have fulfilled our mission: launching women who will be confident and change the world.

M AT T H E W S U D N I K Experiential learning The process of applying for the Master Teacher grant forced me to reflect on my past thirteen years in the classroom. I realized that my teaching practice was influenced by my most inspiring teachers. I remember these educators for getting me excited about the study of the humanities and for helping me to find my voice in class discussions. As I assembled the digital portfolio, I noticed with great clarity certain themes emerge—my teaching was consistently interdisciplinary, multicultural, and active. In particular, I noticed that over the past thirteen years I shifted my attention from thinking of myself as a teacher of history, or any subject, to understanding my role as a teacher of adolescents. This shift has helped me to refocus my work on the students themselves. I have tried to emphasize experiential learning—both through class projects and field trips. I hope that my students have been inspired to embrace the joy of learning as an important guide for their future lives.

AMY HEISHMAN To watch someone learn is to see them My pathway to teaching is unlike many others because I didn’t plan to teach at all, but I have loved it and wouldn’t want anything different. Watching someone learn to comprehend the world, whether that vehicle of understanding is history, math, literature, or science, is an incredible privilege. To watch someone learn is to see them become. Ironically, in watching that process, I found myself—the learner me, the teacher me, even the lawyer me. To this day, I credit teaching as fundamental to figuring out who I am in the wide universe. I did not return to my Ph.D program but I did find myself back in “class.” This is my sixth year at Madeira and I’m especially grateful for my Madeira community; it really does take a village. My best teaching days are ones that I’m able to collaborate with a colleague, eat lunch with good company, and develop better lessons with the help of my students. I’m perpetually grateful for each new day in the classroom. I hope to have many more. Thank you.

CO-CURRICULUM

CORNER

One of the most important changes that Pilar Cabeza de Vaca implemented is the academic program change that resulted in the Modular Schedule. This move also had a large impact on the Co-Curriculum program. Students no longer work at their placements just once a week—they work for an entire five-week mod and focus solely on the internship. The ramifications have been profound. Students are now able to complete more comprehensive projects that provide beneficial work experience. This change has also allowed students to explore unique offerings, such as remote placements in locations around the world, that would not have been possible with the previous schedule.

REMOTE PLACEMENT: NESHMEEYA ABBAS ’20 Jang Media Group, Karachi, Pakistan

Neshmeeya was able to spend an entire mod in Pakistan interning with the Jang Media Group, one of the largest media conglomerates in Pakistan. Throughout her internship, she served as a writer, editor, graphic designer, and business strategist. She was able to fully immerse herself in the Pakistani culture and learn so much. “My remote placement in Pakistan was really pivotal in my professional and personal development because I loved being immersed in a new and unique culture. I had a rare opportunity to work in Pakistan’s largest multimedia conglomerate, The Jang Group. Working under pressure as a staff writer in different divisions of a newspaper, I published ten byline articles in the widest-circulated English daily, The News. Additionally, I was able to further develop my fluency in Urdu and visit historic Mughal and Indus civilization sites, all while gaining valuable experience in journalism. Since my father’s family is originally from Pakistan, my remote placement allowed me to also get in touch with my Pakistani roots and experience the Karachi lifestyle. I would highly recommend a remote placement for Co-Curriculum because it forces you to become independent, more confident, and develop an open mind to new experiences. Because of my remote placement, I have decided that going to college abroad is the right decision for me and my career path.”

PILAR CABEZA DE VACA: LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

EVOLVING CO-CURRICULUM Pilar fundamentally changed Co-Curriculum by shifting from the once-a-week program to a five-week full-time module of experiential learning, which allows in-depth, start-to-finish projects and remote placement options outside the DC metro area.

IN-DEPTH PROJECTS: JACKIE AYERS ’20 dZM Legal, Washington, D.C.

Jackie interned for the law firm dZM Legal, where she gained valuable experience in the field of family law. During her internship, she attended hearings for juvenile defendants and abused/neglected child respondents. She also summarized mental health and competency reports, met with clients, and drafted guardianship reports. “The family court environment was much more uplifting than I had originally anticipated. During my internship experience, in all of the abuse/neglect cases, everyone is working toward reunification and the best interest for the child,” Jackie noted. “My internship would have been an entirely different experience if I hadn’t attended my placement daily. When the partners at dZM Legal work on a case, they are typically in court once a week for a status or deposition hearing, during which we would meet with clients or occasionally the government prosecutor to lay out the terms for a plea bargain. Had I not been at my placement daily, I would have missed too many case developments to be sufficiently informed, and I would have missed out on interacting with clients and becoming familiar with their cases. The best part about being at my placement daily was witnessing the person-to-person interactions that are so integral to working at a juvenile delinquency practice; without this aspect of my internship, I probably would have spent my time doing paperwork involving clients I never would have met, making the experience much less meaningful.”

In her time at Madeira, Davis has qualified for States on three occasions, earned two All-ISL team selections, and holds the VISAA State record for the 100-yard breaststroke. Davis has been awarded the USA All-American Athletic Award and the US All-American Achievement Award. Aquatics Director Rod Montrie is proud of Sofie’s decision. “Sofie has been an extremely valuable member of Madeira’s Swim & Dive team. We look forward to her results as a Kentucky Wildcat.”

During Grace’s time at Madeira, she contributed to numerous varsity programs, including soccer, field hockey, swim and dive, rock climbing, and lacrosse. “Grace has been one of the foundational members of our program the last three years,” said Assistant Director of Athletics Kelly Chandler. “We are so proud of her accomplishments and wish her the best in her new chapter.”

“Annie epitomizes what it means to be a Madeira athlete,” says Assistant Director of Athletics Kelly Chandler. “She is a three-sport athlete and captain, is a strong vocal leader, and sets the standard for what it means to work hard and be a great teammate. Annie performs no matter what, and will have a successful career at Navy, both on her team and for her country. We are so proud of Annie and look forward to watching her continue to serve and lead at Navy and beyond.”

T H E P I R AT E S O F P E N Z A N C E INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO NEW GENRE

The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan was a surprise choice for the winter musical. Because Pirates is an operetta, or light opera, a genre resting squarely between musical theater and opera, many students did not know what to expect in the rehearsal process, but the turnout for auditions was strong nonetheless. Hannah Aguinis ’21 noted, “This is a style of musical that I never would have imagined singing, and I have learned so many new skills through this experience, as well as discovered a new love for this genre.” Julia Cooper ’22 said she “enjoyed singing in a style that’s not typically in my comfort zone and expanding my capabilities as an actress and singer.” Madeira girls embraced the opportunity to learn the music and encourage one another in the process, with strong vocal captain leadership from Patsy Koonce ’20, Ella Tovares ’22, and Lily Hunt ’20. The girls learned a total of twenty-eight musical numbers, including choruses, duets, trios, and long recitatives (singing in a speech-like manner with less rhythmic underpinning). All girls were involved in ‘making the music their own,’ by adapting traditional four- to eight-part harmonies to suit an all-female cast and selecting contemporary musical numbers (“Waterloo” from Mamma Mia! and “The Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars) for insertion into the score, a popular convention with performances of Pirates. The talent and musicianship the cast displayed during the performances and the students’ growth during the process are cause for celebration.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE ARTS SERIES INTRODUCED

The Entrepreneurship in the Arts series, sponsored by the Fine Arts department, welcomes professional artists who demonstrate entrepreneurial skills and vision to have dinner with students enrolled in arts courses at Madeira. Artists discuss their career paths, share their art, and answer questions from students about their field and entrepreneurship. Presenters have included jazz singer Rochelle Rice, composer Linda Tutas Haugen, psychology professor of social cognition and imagination Thalia Goldstein, film producer and actress Marjuan Canady, Madeira faculty member and visual artist Ann Miller, and steelpan musician Joseanne Francis. Upcoming presenters include Madeira alumna and stage director Jennifer Williams ’02.

Anne Curtis Fredericks ’43, P’73 Anne Fredericks is a member of a rare group of Madeira alumnae who can say she has conversed with all nine of Madeira’s Heads of School. As a student, Anne benefited from both Miss Madeira’s and Miss Maynard’s classes. The writing and editing skills Anne honed

This publication was once supported by alumnae and it was Anne Fredericks, Celia Faulkner Crawford ’54, and Mimi Griffin Crowell ’43+, who volunteered to edit and helped build it up to the award-winning magazine we know today.
